A major remaining challenge in the superconducting cuprates is the unambiguous differentiation of the composition and electronic structure of the CuO2 layers and those of the intermediate layers. The large c axis for these materials permits employing soft x-ray (930.3 eV) standing wave (SW) excitation in photoemission that yields atomic layer-by-layer depth resolution of these properties. Applying SW photoemission to Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ yields the depth distribution of atomic composition and the layer-resolved densities of states. We detect significant Ca presence in the SrO layers and oxygen bonding to three different cations. The layer-resolved valence electronic structure is found to be strongly influenced by the atomic supermodulation structure, as determined by comparison to density functional theory calculations, by Ca-Sr intermixing, and by correlation effects associated with the Cu 3d-3d Coulomb interaction, further clarifying the complex interactions in this prototypical cuprate. Measurements of this type for other quasi-two-dimensional materials with large c represent a promising future direction.

Applying linear response and the magnetic force theorem in correlated density functional theory, the intersublattice exchange constants of antiferromagnetic Eu are calculated and found to vanish near the pressure of P_{c}=82  GPa, just where magnetic order is observed experimentally to be lost. The Eu 4f^{7} moment remains unchanged at high pressure, again in agreement with spectroscopic measurements, leaving the picture of perfect frustration of interatomic Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yoshida couplings in a broad metallic background, leaving a state of electrons strongly exchange coupled to arbitrarily oriented, possibly quasistatic local moments. This strongly frustrated state gives way to superconductivity at T_{c}=1.7  K, observed experimentally. These phenomena, and free energy considerations related to correlations, suggest an unusual phase of matter that is discussed within the scenarios of the Doniach Kondo lattice phase diagram, the metallic spin glass class, and itinerant spin liquid or spin gas systems.

Compounds with honeycomb structures occupied by strong spin orbit coupled (SOC) moments are considered to be candidate Kitaev quantum spin liquids. Here we present the first example of Os on a honeycomb structure, Li 2.15(3) Os 0.85(3) O 3 (C2/c, a = 5.09 Å, b = 8.81 Å, c = 9.83 Å, β = 99.3°). Neutron diffraction shows large site disorder in the honeycomb layer and X-ray absorption spectroscopy indicates a valence state of Os (4.7 ± 0.2), consistent with the nominal concentration. We observe a transport band gap of Δ = 243 ± 23 meV, a large van Vleck susceptibility, and an effective moment of 0.85 μ B , much lower than expected from 70% Os(+5). No evidence of long range order is found above 0.10 K but a spin glass-like peak in ac-susceptibility is observed at 0.5 K. The specific heat displays an impurity spin contribution in addition to a power law ∝T (0.63±0.06) . Applied density functional theory (DFT) leads to a reduced moment, suggesting incipient itineracy of the valence electrons, and finding evidence that Li over stoichiometry leads to Os(4+)-Os(5+) mixed valence. This local picture is discussed in light of the site disorder and a possible underlying quantum spin liquid state.

Topological insulators hold great potential for efficient information processing and storage. Using density functional theory calculations, we predict that a honeycomb lead monolayer can be stabilized on an Al 2 O 3 (0001) substrate to become topologically non-trivial with a sizeable band gap (∼0.27 eV). Furthermore, we propose to use a hexagonal boron-nitride (h-BN) monolayer as a protection for the topological states of Pb/Al 2 O 3 and Sn/Al 2 O 3 . Our findings suggest new possibilities for designing and protecting two-dimensional TIs for practical applications.

We predict a new class of 3D topological insulators (TIs) in which the spin-orbit coupling (SOC) can more effectively generate band gap. Band gap of conventional TI is mainly limited by two factors, the strength of SOC and, from electronic structure perspective, the band gap when SOC is absent. While the former is an atomic property, the latter can be minimized in a generic rock-salt lattice model in which a stable crossing of bands at the Fermi level along with band character inversion occurs in the absence of SOC. Thus large-gap TIs or TIs composed of lighter elements can be expected. In fact, we find by performing first-principles calculations that the model applies to a class of double perovskites A 2 BiXO 6 (A = Ca, Sr, Ba; X = Br, I) and the band gap is predicted up to 0.55 eV. Besides, surface Dirac cones are robust against the presence of dangling bond at boundary.

Z2 and Chern topological phases such as newly discovered quantum spin Hall and original quantum Hall states hardly both co-exist in a single material due to their contradictory requirement on the time-reversal symmetry (TRS). We show that although the TRS is broken in systems with a periodically driving field, an effective TRS can still be defined provided the ac-field is linearly polarized or certain other conditions are satisfied. The controllable TRS provides us a route to manipulate contradictory phases by tuning the polarization. To demonstrate the idea, we consider a tight-binding model that is relevant to several monolayered materials as a benchmark system. Our calculation shows not only topological Z2 to Chern phase transition occurs but rich Chern phases are also observed. In addition, we also discussed the realization of our proposal in real materials, such as spin-orbit coupled graphene and crystal Bismuth. This opens the possibility of manipulating various topological phases in a single material and can be a promising approach to engineer new electronic states of matter.

A new method of computing multipolar exchange interaction in spin-orbit coupled systems is developed using multipolar tensor expansion of the density matrix in local density approximation+U electronic structure calculation. Within the mean field approximation, exchange constants can be mapped into a series of total energy calculations by the pair-flip approximation technique. The application to uranium dioxide shows an antiferromagnetic superexchange coupling in dipoles but a ferromagnetic one in quadrupoles which is very different from past studies. Further calculation of the spin-lattice interaction indicates it is of the same order with the superexchange and characterizes the overall behavior of the quadrupolar part as a competition between them.

Objective: MR imaging of central nervous system (CNS) malignancies falls short of a definitive evaluation. Tissue diagnosis remains the gold standard. Diffusion-tensor MR imaging measures the apparent diffusion coefficient and diffusion anisotropy of water in tissue. The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that the apparent diffusion coefficient may improve the MR imaging evaluation of newly diagnosed CNS neoplasms. We examined the relationship between the apparent diffusion coefficient, anisotropy, and tumor cellularity in 12 pediatric patients., Materials and Methods: On the basis of histopathologic evaluation, tumors in this case series were segregated into three types: low-grade gliomas, embryonal tumors, and nonembryonal high-grade tumors. Mean apparent diffusion coefficient and anisotropy values obtained from the solid components of each tumor were compared with cellularity, total cellular area, and total nuclear area derived from biopsy material., Results: The apparent diffusion coefficient ratio (tumor to normal brain) correlated well with tumor classification (p = 0.001). Anisotropy was decreased similarly in all tumor classifications. The absolute apparent diffusion coefficient correlated well with cellularity (p = 0.014) and total nuclear area (p = 0.005) per high-power field. The correlation between apparent diffusion coefficient and total cellular area per high-power field was not statistically significant., Conclusion: The apparent diffusion coefficient may be predictive of tumor classification and may be a useful tool in characterizing tumor cellularity and total nuclear area. These parameters are not available in standard MR imaging. Therefore, diffusion-tensor imaging may enhance the diagnostic process in pediatric CNS malignancies.
