We propose a novel hybrid mode interferometer (HMI) leveraging the interference of hybridized TE-TM modes in a silicon-on-insulator (SOI) waveguide integrated with a GeSe phase change material (PCM) layer. The SOI waveguide's dimensions are optimized to support the hybridization of the fundamental transverse magnetic ($TM_0$) and the first higher transverse electric ($TE_1$) mode. This design allows for efficient and nearly equal power coupling between these two modes, resulting in high-contrast interference when starting from the amorphous PCM state. The PCM's phase transition induces a differential change in the modal effective index, enabling high-contrast transmittance modulation. Our numerical simulations demonstrate a multilevel transmission with a high contrast of nearly 14 dB, when the amorphous region's length is varied incrementally, enabling multi-bit storage. The transmittance is maximized in the fully crystalline state with an insertion loss below 0.1 dB. The HMI can also operate as a quasi-pure phase shifter when partially amorphized, making it suitable for Mach-Zehnder interferometers. These characteristics make the proposed device a promising candidate for applications in photonic memories and neuromorphic computing.

We miniaturize a vertically-coupled in-plane whispering gallery mode cavity incorporating a quantum cascade gain medium, aiming to realize the mid-infrared counterpart to the vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL). Building on previous work with linear microcavities, we introduce a new type of quantum cascade surface emitting laser (QCSEL) by miniaturizing a buried heterostructure ring cavity. At wavelengths of 4.5 ${\mu}$m and 8 ${\mu}$m, we investigate the optical losses for decreasing ring diameters while benchmarking the device performance against linear microcavities. We achieve an equivalent mirror reflectivity of 0.95 and demonstrate lasing with ring diameters as small as 50 ${\mu}$m. Finally, we report a continuous-wave threshold power dissipation of 274mW for a 100 ${\mu}$m diameter ring QCSEL, characterized on wafer level at 20 ${^\circ}$C.

We present an innovative optical imaging system for measuring parameters of a small particle such as a macromolecule or nanoparticle at the quantum limit of sensitivity. In comparison to the conventional confocal interferometric scattering (iSCAT) approach, our setup adds a second arm to form a Michelson interferometer that allows us to tune a relative phase. We evaluate the quantum Cram\'er-Rao bound (QCRB) for different quantum states, including single-mode coherent states, multi-frequency coherent states, and phase-averaged coherent states. Our results show that the proposed setup can achieve the QCRB of sensitivity and outperform iSCAT for all considered quantum states for mass and phase estimation of a particle.

Planar microcavity polaritons have recently emerged as a promising technology for improving several performance characteristics of organic light-emitting diodes, photodiodes and photovoltaics. To form polaritons and achieve enhanced performance, traditional microcavities with high reflectivity mirrors are fabricated by energy-intensive physical vapor deposition methods, which restrict their use in applications requiring flexibility and low cost. Here, for the first time, we demonstrate a dielectric all-solution-processed polariton microcavity consisting of Rhodamine 6G films in a poly(vinyl alcohol) matrix, exhibiting more than 400 meV Rabi-splitting and photoluminescence with uniform dispersion along the lower polariton mode. Our fully automated deposition and annealing fabrication protocol played a key role in preventing interlayer mixing and producing high optical-quality polariton microcavities, enabling us to observe enhanced scattering of reservoir excitons to the lower polariton and to explore the effects of strong coupling on bimolecular interactions. Notably, we found that polariton microcavities exhibit a more than 10-fold increase in the critical excitation density for bimolecular annihilation compared to bare Rhodamine 6G films. This enhancement can only be partially attributed to the sub-3-fold measured enhancement in radiative lifetime, highlighting the critical role of strong coupling in the influence of molecular dynamics., Comment: 25 pages, 4 figures, supporting information

In distributed fiber-optic sensing based on optical frequency domain reflectometry (OFDR), Doppler frequency shifts due to the changes of disturbances during one sweep period introduce demodulation errors that accumulate along both the distance and time, impairing the sensing performance. Here, we report distributed dynamic strain sensing using Doppler-shift-immune phase-sensitive OFDR based on frequency-tracking and spectrum-zooming with ultra-weak reflection array. Theoretical study has been carried out with the introduction of mismatch coefficient, unveiling quantitatively the impact of Doppler shift. Following a numerical analysis of the proposed method, a retained precision has been experimentally verified regardless of the position mismatch due to the Doppler effect. Doppler-shift-immune sensing for dynamic strains covering continuous spatial resolution over a distance of 1000 m with a 2.5 cm sensing spatial resolution has been demonstrated, verifying the high fidelity promised by the proposed method.

Perturbing resonant systems causes shifts in their associated scattering poles in the complex plane. In a previous study [arXiv: 2408.11360], we demonstrated that these shifts can be calculated numerically by analyzing the residue of a generalized Wigner-Smith operator associated with the perturbation parameter. In this work, we extend this approach by connecting the Wigner-Smith formalism with results from standard electromagnetic perturbation theory applicable to open systems with resonances of arbitrary quality factors. We further demonstrate the utility of the method through several numerical examples, including the inverse design of a multi-layered nanoresonator sensor and an analysis of the enhanced sensitivity of scattering zeros to perturbations., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures

Holographic displays are a promising technology for immersive visual experiences, and their potential for compact form factor makes them a strong candidate for head-mounted displays. However, at the short propagation distances needed for a compact, head-mounted architecture, image contrast is low when using a traditional phase-only spatial light modulator (SLM). Although a complex SLM could restore contrast, these modulators require bulky lenses to optically co-locate the amplitude and phase components, making them poorly suited for a compact head-mounted design. In this work, we introduce a novel architecture to improve contrast: by adding a low resolution amplitude SLM a short distance away from the phase modulator, we demonstrate peak signal-to-noise ratio improvement up to 31 dB in simulation compared to phase-only, even when the amplitude modulator is 60$\times$ lower resolution than its phase counterpart. We analyze the relationship between diffraction angle and amplitude modulator pixel size, and validate the concept with a benchtop experimental prototype. By showing that low resolution modulation is sufficient to improve contrast, we pave the way towards practical high-contrast holography in a compact form factor., Comment: 19 pages, 17 figures

We theoretically and computationally investigate the role that the spatial spread of atoms plays in the transmission and reflection of weak light from atom arrays. In particular, we investigate whether coherent wave functions for the atoms' positions leads to different results from a thermal distribution with the same spatial spread. We find that the coherence is not relevant when the light is weak and the electronic states evolve on time scales shorter than the oscillation period of the atoms in their traps. Full numerical calculations and derivations using the sudden approximation show that reflection and transmission agree with the simple averaging over atom positions. For parameters outside these restrictions, the simple spatial averaging my lead to inaccurate results.

Free-space optical communication (FSOC) systems offer high-bandwidth and secure communication with minimal capital costs. Adaptive optics (AO) are typically added to these systems to decrease atmospheric channel losses; however, the performance of traditional AO wavefront sensors degrades in long-range, deep turbulence conditions. Alternative wavefront sensors using phase diversity can successfully reconstruct wavefronts in deep turbulence, but current implementations require bulky setups with high latency. In this work, we employ a nanostructured birefringent metasurface optic that enables low-latency phase diversity wavefront sensing in a compact form factor. We prove the effectiveness of this approach in mid-to-high turbulence (Rytov numbers from 0.2 to 0.6) through simulation and experimental demonstration. In both cases an average 16-fold increase in signal from the corrected beam is obtained. Our approach opens a pathway for compact, robust wavefront sensing that enhances range and accuracy of FSOC systems.

In the strong-coupling regime, the interaction between light and matter reaches a hybridization state where the photonic and material components become inseparably linked. Using tailored states of light to break symmetries in such systems can underpin the development of novel non-equilibrium quantum materials. Chiral optical cavities offer a promising way for this, enabling either temporal or spatial symmetry-breaking, both of which are unachievable with conventional mirror cavities. For spatial symmetry-breaking a cavity needs to discriminate the handedness of circularly polarized light, a functionality that can only be achieved with metamaterials. Here, we suggest and demonstrate experimentally a chiral transition metal dichalcogenide (TMDC) metasurface with broken out-of-plane symmetry, allowing for a selective formation of self-hybridized exciton-polaritons with specific chirality. Our metasurface cavity maintains maximum chirality for oblique incidence up to 20{\deg}, significantly outperforming all previously known designs, thereby turning the angle of incidence from a constraint to a new degree of freedom for sub-nanometer precise control of resonance wavelengths. Moreover, we study the chiral strong-coupling regime in nonlinear experiments and show the polariton-driven nature of chiral third-harmonic generation. Ultrasound is widely used in medical imaging, and emerging photo-acoustic imaging is crucial for disease diagnosis. Currently, high-end photo-acoustic imaging systems rely on piezo-electric materials for detecting ultrasound waves, which come with sensitivity, noise, and bandwidth limitations. Advanced applications demand a large matrix of broadband, high-resolution, and scalable ultrasound sensors. Silicon photonic circuits have been introduced to meet these requirements by detecting ultrasound-induced deformation and stress in silicon waveguides. Although higher sensitivities could facilitate the exploration of new applications, the high stiffness of the waveguide materials constrains the intrinsic sensitivity of the silicon photonic circuits to ultrasound signals. Here, we explore the impact of the mechanical properties of a polymer cladding on the sensitivity of silicon photonic ultrasound sensors. Our model and experiments reveal that optimizing the polymer cladding's stiffness enhances the resonance wavelength sensitivity. Experimentally, we show a fourfold increase in the sensitivity compared to the sensors without a cladding polymer and, a twofold sensitivity increase compared to the sensors with a cladding polymer of saturated cross-linking density. Interestingly, comparing experiments with the optomechanical model suggests that the change in Young's Modulus alone cannot explain the sensitivity increase. In conclusion, polymer-coated silicon photonic ultrasound sensors exhibit potential for advanced photo-acoustic imaging applications. It offers the prospect of increasing the ultrasound detection sensitivity of silicon photonic ultrasound sensors while using CMOS-compatible processes. This paves the way to integrate the polymer-coated silicon photonic ultrasound sensors with electronics to utilize the sensors in advanced medical imaging applications.

We show topologically ordered states in the complex-valued spectra of non-Hermitian systems. These arise when the distinctive exceptional points in the energy Riemann surfaces of such models are annihilated after threading them across the boundary of the Brillouin zone. This process results in a non-trivially closed branch cut that can be identified with a Fermi arc. Building on an analogy to Kitaev's toric code, these cut lines form non-contractible loops, which parallel the defect lines of the toric-code ground states. Their presence or absence establishes topological order for fully non-degenerate non-Hermitian systems. Excitations above these ground-state analogs are characterized by the occurrence of additional exceptional points. We illustrate the characteristics of the topologically protected states in a non-Hermitian two-band model and provide an outlook toward experimental realizations in metasurfaces and single-photon interferometry., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

We develop a theoretical model to investigate wave propagation in media with random time-varying properties, where temporal fluctuations lead to complex scattering dynamics. Focusing on the ensemble-averaged field, we derive an exact expression for the average Green's function in the presence of finite temporal disorder, and extend our analysis to the thermodynamic limit. In contrast to spatial disorder, causality prevents recurrent scattering, allowing us to achieve a non-perturbative solution. We identify two distinct propagation regimes: one where the field oscillates with constant amplitude, and another where it grows exponentially at long times. Our findings offer new insights into wave dynamics in temporally disordered media, with potential applications in time-varying metamaterials, dynamic sensing, and imaging in turbulent or chaotic environments.

Integrated circuit technology enables the scaling of circuit complexity and functionality while maintaining manufacturability and reliability. Integration is expected to play an important role in quantum information technologies, including in the highly demanding task of producing the classical signals to control and measure quantum circuits at scales needed for fault-tolerant quantum computation. Here we experimentally characterize the cryogenic performance of a miniaturized photonic integrated circuit fabricated by a commercial foundry that down-converts classical optical signals to microwave signals. The circuit consists of waveguide-integrated germanium PIN photodiodes packaged using a scalable photonic wire bonding approach to a multi-channel optical fiber array that provides the optical excitation. We find the peak optical-to-microwave conversion response to be $\sim 150 \pm 13$ mA/W in the O-band at 4.2 K, well below the temperature the circuit was designed for and tested at in the past, for two different diode designs. The second diode design operates to over 6 GHz of 3 dB bandwidth making it suitable for controlling quantum circuits, with improvements in bandwidth and response expected from improved packaging. A beyond electric-dipole light-matter theory is needed to describe emerging X-ray and THz applications for characterization and control of quantum materials but inaccessible as nondipole lattice-aperiodic terms impede on the use of Bloch's theorem. To circumvent this, we derive a formalism that captures dominant nondipole effects in intense electromagnetic fields while conserving lattice translational symmetry. Our approach enables the first accurate nondipole first-principles microscopic simulation of nonperturbative harmonic generation in Si. We reveal nondipole-induced transverse currents generating perturbative even-ordered harmonics and display the onset of nondipole high harmonic generation near the laser damage threshold., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures

Recent advancements in transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) have unveiled exceptional optical and electronic characteristics, opened up new opportunities, and provided a unique platform for exploring light-matter interactions under the strong coupling regime. The exploitation of exciton-polaritons, with their peculiar hybrid light-matter properties, for the development of spintronic customizable devices that enhance both the information capacity and functionality at ambient temperatures is often suggested as a promising route. However, although TMD polaritons have shown promising potential, the microscopic mechanisms leading to nonlinearities in TMD polaritons are complex and their spin-anisotropy, a crucial requirement for many proposed polaritonic devices, has been missing. Here, we demonstrate the absence of spin-anisotropic interaction in a monolayer WS2 microcavity (at room temperature) and show how spin-dependent interactions can be controlled and spin anisotropy recovered by engineering double WS2 layer structures with varied interlayer spacing. We attribute this phenomenon to a distinctive feature in exciton-polariton physics: layer-dependent polariton-phonon coupling. We use theoretical calculations of the phonon electrostatic potentials finding a drastically different coupling strength for single and double monolayer samples and discuss qualitatively how this explains the observed spin-anisotropic response. This is further consistent with experiments on multi WS2 layer samples and the identification of a critical separation distance, above which an effective single monolayer spin-anisotropic response is recovered, both in experiment and theory. Our work lays the groundwork for the development of spin-optronic polaritonic devices at room temperature.

Simultaneous space-time focusing (SSTF) is often claimed to reduce the longitudinal extent of the high-intensity region near the focus, in contradiction to the original work on this topic. Here we seek to address this confusion by using numerical and analytic methods to investigate the degree of localisation of the spatio-spectral and spatio-temporal amplitudes and intensities of a SSTF pulse. The analytic method yields, for bi-Gaussian input pulses, expressions for the on-axis bandwidth, pulse duration, and pulse-front tilt (PFT) of the SSTF pulse, and is found to be in excellent agreement with numerical calculations. To provide further insight, we propose a method for determining the transverse input profile of a non-SSTF pulse with equivalent spatial focusing. We find that the longitudinal variations of the peak axial intensities of the SSTF and spatially equivalent (SE) pulses are the same, apart from a constant factor, and hence that SSTF does not constrain the region of high intensity more than a non-SSTF pulse with equivalent focusing. We demonstrate that one possible cause of confusion in the literature arises from the fact that a simplistic method for calculating the pulse intensity exaggerates the degree of intensity localisation owing to its failure to account for the spatio-temporal and spatio-spectral couplings inherent to SSTF pulses.

Scattering-type scanning near-field optical microscopy (s-SNOM) allows for the observation of the optical response of material surfaces with a resolution far below the diffraction limit. A spatial resolution of 10-100 nm is routinely achieved in s-SNOM based on amplitude-modulation atomic force microscopy (AM-AFM) with tapping amplitudes of tens of nanometers. However, optical imaging and spectroscopy of structures that are localized to the atomic scale remain a significant challenge. This can be overcome by combining the field enhancement localized at the atomic-scale structure of the tip apex, namely a plasmonic picocavity, with frequency-modulationAFM (FM-AFM), namely non-contact AFM, in a stable cryogenic ultrahigh vacuum environment. Here, we developed picocavityenhanced SNOM (PE-SNOM) under visible laser illumination based on the integration of a quartz tuning fork sensor with small-amplitude oscillations of 1 nm or less. In addition, the use of a focused ion beam-polished silver tip mounted on the sensor leads to strong field enhancement in the picocavity and ensures minimal background scattering from the tip shaft. PE-SNOM allows us to obtain a material-contrast image of silicon islands on a silver surface with 1-nm lateral resolution, which surpasses the conventional limits of s-SNOM. PE-SNOM paves the way for the acquisition of optical information from atomic-scale targets, such as single photo-active defects and molecules.

Single-shot ptychography is a quantitative phase imaging method wherein overlapping beams of light arranged in a grid pattern simultaneously illuminate a sample, allowing a full ptychographic dataset to be collected in a single shot. It is primarily used at optical wavelengths, but there is interest in using it for X-ray imaging. However, the constraints imposed by X-ray optics have limited the resolution achievable to date. In this work, we reinterpret single-shot ptychography as a structured illumination method by viewing the grid of beams as a single, highly structured illumination function. Pre-calibrating this illumination and reconstructing single-shot data using the randomized probe imaging algorithm allows us to account for the overlap and coherent interference between the diffraction arising from each beam. We achieve a resolution 3.5 times finer than the numerical aperture-based limit imposed by traditional algorithms for single-shot ptychography. We argue that this reconstruction method will work better for most single-shot ptychography experiments and discuss the implications for the design of future single-shot X-ray microscopes., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

We present an all-optical concept for measuring the electric field of light spanning from infrared to extreme ultraviolet with multi-petahertz detection bandwidth. Our approach employs a heterodyne detection of light produced by a highly nonlinear light-matter interaction gate. We establish a numerical model of a complex spectral response for unambiguous electric field extraction and benchmark it against the experiment. We show that the concept can be applied for measuring wavelengths down to about 60 nm with a high sensitivity and dynamic range of about 40 decibels. This opens up unprecedented perspectives for spatio-temporal electric field-resolved experiments and control of broadband dynamics of matter.

Single-shot hyperspectral wavefront sensing is essential for applications like spatio-spectral coupling metrology in high power laser or fast material dispersion imaging. Under broadband illumination, traditional wavefront sensors assume an achromatic wavefront, which makes them unsuitable. We introduce a hyperspectral wavefront sensing scheme based on the Hartmann wavefront sensing principles, employing a multicore fiber as a modified Hartmann mask to overcome these limitations. Our system leverages the angular memory effect and spectral decorrelation from the multicore fiber, encoding wavefront gradients into displacements and the spectral information into uncorrelated patterns. This method retains the simplicity, compactness, and single-shot capability of conventional wavefront sensors, with only a slight increase in computational complexity. It also allows a tunable trade-off between spatial and spectral resolution. We demonstrate its efficacy for recording the hyperspectral wavefront cube from single-pulse acquisitions at the Apollon multi-PW laser facility, and for performing multispectral microscopic imaging of dispersive phase objects.

Photothermal microscopy is an emerging tool for measuring light-matter interactions with single-molecule sensitivity. It is generally believed that the spectral acquisition speed in photothermal microscopy is limited by the slow thermal diffusion process. Here, we demonstrate mid-infrared energy deposition (MIRED) spectroscopy, which offers both microsecond-scale temporal resolution and sub-micron spatial resolution. In this approach, the photothermal process is optically probed while the infrared pulses from a quantum cascade laser array are rapidly tuned. Based on Newton's law, the energy deposition corresponds to the first derivative of local temperature rise over time and provides the instantaneous infrared absorption. By employing time-resolved measurement of transient energy deposition, the upper limit for spectrum encoding shifts to the vibrational relaxation level, which occurs on the picosecond scale. This method significantly increases the detection bandwidth while maintaining the sensitivity and resolution advantages of photothermal detection.

Silicon photonics, with its CMOS compatibility and high integration density, has enabled a wide range of novel applications. Harnessing stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS), an optomechanic interaction between optical and GHz acoustic waves, in silicon-on-insulator (SOI) platforms attracts great interests for its potential in narrow-linewidth lasers and microwave photonics. However, the poor optoacoustic overlap in silicon nanowires on conventional SOI platforms has previously restricted the observation of SBS signals to suspended silicon waveguide structures. In this work, we report, for the first time, the SBS response in a non-suspended ultra-low-loss thick-SOI waveguide platform. The SBS process in this 3~$\mu$m thick SOI platform is enabled by a leaky acoustic mode that coexists with the optical mode in the waveguide core, resulting in enhanced optoacoustic overlap. We measured a Brillouin gain coefficient of 2.5 m$^{-1}$W$^{-1}$ and 1.9 m$^{-1}$W$^{-1}$ at 37.6 GHz for the rib and strip waveguide, respectively. This work paves the way for Brillouin-based applications in non-suspended ultra-low-loss silicon photonics systems.

Advancements in light modulator technology have been driving discoveries and progress across various fields. The problem of large-scale coherent optical control of atomic quantum systems-including cold atoms, ions, and solid-state color centers-presents among the most stringent requirements. This motivates a new generation of high-speed large-scale modulator technology with the following requirements: (R1) operation at a design wavelength of choice in the visible (VIS) to near-infrared (NIR) spectrum, (R2) a scalable technology with a high channel density (> 100mm-2 ), (R3) a high modulation speed (> 100MHz), and (R4) a high extinction ratio (> 20 dB). To fulfill these requirements, we introduce a modulator technology based on piezoelectrically actuated silicon nitride resonant waveguide gratings fabricated on 200mm diameter silicon wafers with CMOS compatible processes. We present a proof-of-concept device with 4 x 4 individually addressable 50 {mu}m x 50 {mu}m pixels or channels, each containing a resonant waveguide grating with a ~ 780 nm design wavelength, supporting > 100MHz modulation speeds, and a spectral response with > 20 dB extinction., Comment: 9 pages + 2 pages supplementary

Quantum state tomography (QST) is an essential technique for characterizing quantum states. However, practical implementations of QST are significantly challenged by factors such as shot noise, attenuation, and Raman scattering, especially when photonic qubits are transmitted through optical fibers alongside classical signals. In this paper, we present a numerical framework to simulate and evaluate the efficiency of QST under these realistic conditions. The results reveal how the efficiency of QST is influenced by the power of the classical signal. By analyzing the fidelity of reconstructed states, we provide insights into the limitations and potential improvements for QST in noisy environments.

Integrated photonic quantum information processing (QIP) has advanced rapidly due to progress in various nanophotonic platforms. Single photon detectors have been the subject of intense study due to their ubiquity in QIP systems, yet many state-of-the art detectors operate at cryogenic temperatures under vacuum and suffer from long dead times. We propose and demonstrate a single photon detection scheme based on optical parametric amplification in nanophotonic lithium niobate (LN) combined with a classical photodetector. We use quantum detector tomography and experimentally demonstrate an efficiency of 26.5% with a 2.2% dark count rate. We show that by improving the nonlinearity-to-loss ratio in nanophotonics and using homodyne detection on a squeezed pump, the detector can achieve 69% efficiency with 0.9% dark count rate. The detector operates at room temperature, has no intrinsic dead time, and is readily integrated in LN nanophotonics, in which many other components of photonic QIP are available. Scanning objects with a more tightly focused beam (for example of photons or electrons) can provide higher-resolution images. However the stronger localisation of energy deposition can damage tissues in organic samples or may rearrange the chemical structure or physical properties of inorganic materials. Scanning an object with a broad beam can deliver an equivalent probe energy but spreads it over a much wider footprint. Sharp images can be reconstructed from the diffuse implanted signal when a decoding step can recover a delta-like impulse response. Huffman sequences, by design, have the optimal delta-like autocorrelation for aperiodic (non-cyclic) convolution and are well-conditioned. Here we adapt 1D Huffman sequences to design 2D Huffman-like discrete arrays that have spatially broad, relatively thin and uniform intensity profiles that retain excellent aperiodic autocorrelation metrics. Examples of broad shaped diffuse beams were developed for the case of x-ray imaging. A variety of masks were fabricated by the deposition of finely structured layers of tantalum on a silicon oxide wafer. The layers form a pattern of discrete pixels that modify the shape of an incident uniform beam of low energy x-rays as it passes through the mask. The intensity profiles of the x-ray beams after transmission through these masks were validated, first by acquiring direct-detector x-ray images of the masks, and second by raster scanning a pinhole over each mask pattern, pixel-by-pixel, collecting "bucket" signals as applied in traditional ghost imaging. The masks were then used to raster scan the shaped x-ray beam over several simple binary and "gray" test objects, again producing bucket signals, from which sharp reconstructed object images were obtained by deconvolving their bucket images.

Exceptional points (EPs) in the propagation states give rise to the emergence of intriguing properties with the divergence of the group velocity. However, there have been no experimental reports due to the necessity of maintaining high levels of fabrication precision and the requisite high group velocity contrast. In our study, we propose a design of photonic crystal waveguide with glide and time reversal symmetry, and derive an effective Hamiltonian for edge states to realize fast-light edge states. We adopt a systematic method to generate EPs in edge states by introducing non-Hermitian perturbations to Dirac points guaranteed by glide symmetry, which ensures that EP modes are free from out-of-plane radiation losses. Then, our study reveals the conditions for the exact EP restoration and provides an analytical solution to offset the EP smoothing due to symmetry breaking, which drastically reduces the group velocity contrast. A good symmetry property of the photonic crystal waveguide allows us to derive the effective Hamiltonian as a simple form, and the EPs can be restored by adjusting the real part of the permittivity. Furthermore, we design a feasible photonic crystal slab waveguide incorporating graphene as the absorbing material, and numerically demonstrate a group velocity reaching $v_g = 3.3c$ near the EP, which is up to 25 times that of the original structure. Thanks to the short periodicity of photonic crystals, it's possible to reach the speed of light in vacuum with group velocity contrasts on the order of one digit. Anderson localization and non-Hermitian skin effect are two paradigmatic wave localization phenomena, resulting from wave interference and the intrinsic non-Hermitian point gap, respectively. In this study, we unveil a novel localization phenomenon associated with long-range asymmetric coupling, termed scale-tailored localization, where the number of induced localized modes and their localization lengths scale exclusively with the coupling range. We show that the long-range coupling fundamentally reshapes the energy spectra and eigenstates by creating multiple connected paths on the lattice. Furthermore, we present experimental observations of scale-tailored localization in non-Hermitian electrical circuits utilizing adjustable voltage followers and switches. The circuit admittance spectra possess separate point-shaped and loop-shaped components in the complex energy plane, corresponding respectively to skin modes and scale-tailored localized states. Our findings not only expand and deepen the understanding of peculiar effects induced by non-Hermiticity but also offer a feasible experimental platform for exploring and controlling wave localizations., Comment: 10+16 pages, 5+11 figures

A key contribution to X-ray dark-field (XDF) is X-ray diffusion by sample structures smaller than the imaging system's spatial resolution. However, some XDF techniques report that resolvable sample edges also generate XDF. Speckle-based X-ray imaging (SBXI) extracts XDF by analyzing sample-imposed changes to a reference speckle pattern's visibility. We present an algorithm for SBXI (a variant of our Multimodal Intrinsic Speckle-Tracking (MIST) algorithm) capable of separating these two distinct XDF contrast mechanisms. The algorithm uses the 'devolving' X-ray Imaging Fokker-Planck equation as its forward model and then solves the associated multimodal inverse problem, to retrieve sample attenuation, phase, and XDF. Previous MIST variants were based on the evolving Fokker-Planck equation, which considers how a reference-speckle image is modified by introducing a sample. The devolving perspective instead considers how the image collected in the presence of the sample and speckle membrane optically flows in reverse, to generate the reference-speckle image when the sample is removed from the system. We compare single- and multiple-exposure multimodal retrieval algorithms from the two Fokker-Planck perspectives. We demonstrate that the devolving perspective can distinguish between two physically different XDF contrast mechanisms; unresolved microstructure- and sharp-edge-induced XDF. This was verified by applying the retrieval algorithms to two experimental data sets. We anticipate that this work will be useful in: Yielding a pair of complementary XDF images that separate sharp-edge diffuse scatter from unresolved microstructure diffuse scatter. A formula for the wavefront of a wave reflected from a diffraction grating with an arbitrary surface profile, as well as with arbitrary non-equidistant and non-parallel grooves was obtained. It was shown that the wavefront of the reflected wave can change significantly when the grating is rotated by 180 degrees around the normal. Surface imperfection and groove pattern imperfection are equivalent for monochromatic radiation; whereas for broadband radiation, the two imperfections lead to similar but different space-time coupling effects. For holographic diffraction gratings, wavefront distortions are the sum of distortions caused by grating surface imperfection and the total surface imperfections of the optics used for writing the grating. The second summand is inversely proportional to the frequency of the radiation used to write the grating. The requirements for the flatness of the optics used to write the grating are always more stringent than the requirements for the flatness of the grating., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures

High-fidelity quantum optomechanical control of a mechanical oscillator requires the ability to perform efficient, low-noise operations on long-lived phononic excitations. Microfabricated high-overtone bulk acoustic wave resonators ($\mathrm{\mu}$HBARs) have been shown to support high-frequency (> 10 GHz) mechanical modes with exceptionally long coherence times (> 1.5 ms), making them a compelling resource for quantum optomechanical experiments. In this paper, we demonstrate a new optomechanical system that permits quantum optomechanical control of individual high-coherence phonon modes supported by such $\mathrm{\mu}$HBARs for the first time. We use this system to perform laser cooling of such ultra-massive (7.5 $\mathrm{\mu}$g) high frequency (12.6 GHz) phonon modes from an occupation of ${\sim}$22 to fewer than 0.4 phonons, corresponding to laser-based ground-state cooling of the most massive mechanical object to date. Through these laser cooling experiments, no absorption-induced heating is observed, demonstrating the resilience of the $\mathrm{\mu}$HBAR against parasitic heating. The unique features of such $\mathrm{\mu}$HBARs make them promising as the basis for a new class of quantum optomechanical systems that offer enhanced robustness to decoherence, necessary for efficient, low-noise photon-phonon conversion.

Generative models cover various application areas, including image, video and music synthesis, natural language processing, and molecular design, among many others. As digital generative models become larger, scalable inference in a fast and energy-efficient manner becomes a challenge. Here, we present optical generative models inspired by diffusion models, where a shallow and fast digital encoder first maps random noise into phase patterns that serve as optical generative seeds for a desired data distribution; a jointly-trained free-space-based reconfigurable decoder all-optically processes these generative seeds to create novel images (never seen before) following the target data distribution. Except for the illumination power and the random seed generation through a shallow encoder, these optical generative models do not consume computing power during the synthesis of novel images. We report the optical generation of monochrome and multi-color novel images of handwritten digits, fashion products, butterflies, and human faces, following the data distributions of MNIST, Fashion MNIST, Butterflies-100, and Celeb-A datasets, respectively, achieving an overall performance comparable to digital neural network-based generative models. To experimentally demonstrate optical generative models, we used visible light to generate, in a snapshot, novel images of handwritten digits and fashion products. We derive new exceptional point (EP) conditions of the coupled microring resonators using coupled mode theory in space, a more accurate approach than the commonly used coupled mode theory in time. Transmission spectra around EPs obtained from the two models have been compared on two material platforms, revealing non-negligible deviations. Our analysis provides a guide for accurately determining parameter sets of coupled microrings at EPs and deepens our understanding on parity-time-symmetric coupled resonators at EPs.

We present a Bayesian algorithm to identify generators of open quantum system dynamics, described by a Lindblad master equation, that are compatible with measured experimental data. The algorithm, based on a Markov Chain Monte Carlo approach, assumes the energy levels of the system are known and outputs a ranked list of interpretable master equation models that produce predicted measurement traces that closely match experimental data. We benchmark our algorithm on quantum optics experiments performed on single and pairs of quantum emitters. The latter case opens the possibility of cooperative emission effects and additional complexity due to the possible interplay between photon and phonon influences on the dynamics. Our algorithm retrieves various minimal models that are consistent with the experimental data, and which can provide a closer fit to measured data than previously suggested and physically expected approximate models. Our results represent an important step towards automated systems characterisation with an approach that is capable of working with diverse and tomographically incomplete input data. We propose new electromagnetic surface waves at the interface formed by connecting a perfect electric conductor (PEC) and a perfect magnetic conductor (PMC) parallel plate waveguides containing materials with positive permittivities and permeabilities. This challenges the conventional understanding that surface waves require materials with negative permittivity or permeability. Theoretical mode analysis and numerical simulations have confirmed the existence of surface waves at the PEC-PMC interface. Additionally, a simulated prism coupling experiment validated the excitation of the surface wave at the PEC-PMC interface. The resonant response of the localized surface waves on the enclosed PEC-PMC surface of a cylinder also closely resembles that of a Drude cylinder. Our finding broadens the understanding of the conditions for generating electromagnetic surface waves and deepens our comprehension of electromagnetic phenomena.

Many of the tests of local realistic hidden-variable theories against quantum mechanics are based on inequalities such as Bell's inequality and Clauser Horne, Shimony, and Holt's inequality. In this work we present a simple alternative test which does not involve inequalities, but direct comparison between correlation functions. The main advantage of this test is that it does not require measuring incompatible observables separately and simultaneously. Leveraging the power of deep learning to design nanophotonic devices has been an area of active research in recent times, with Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) being a popular choice alongside autoencoder-based methods. However, both approaches typically require large datasets and significant computational resources, which can outweigh the advantages of saving time and effort. While GANs trained on smaller datasets can experience challenges such as unstable training and mode collapse, fine-tuning pre-trained GANs on these limited datasets often introduces additional problems, such as overfitting and lack of flexibility. This limits the model's ability to generalize, reducing its overall effectiveness. In this study, we present Variational MineGAN, an enhanced version of MineGAN that is less susceptible to overfitting while leveraging pre-trained GANs. This approach ensures a more robust sampling process, improving the model's generalization ability while transferring knowledge to domains with limited data. Experimental results demonstrate a lower Frechet Inception Distance (FID) score of 52.14, along with an increased Inception Score (IS) of 3.59 compared to prior methods. This implies better quality design images, which allow for the exploration of highly efficient designs with desired spectral responses and improved learning of nonlinear relationships between the latent space and the corresponding designs.

Controlling the symmetry of optical and mechanical waves is pivotal to their full exploitation in technological applications and topology-linked fundamental physics experiments. Leveraging on the control of orbital angular momentum, we introduce here a device forming super-high-frequency-modulated optical vortex beams via acousto-optic interaction of light with acoustic vortices. Originated by shape-engineering of a single-contact bulk acoustic wave resonator, we generate vortices in a wide band of frequencies around 4 GHz and with frequency/geometrically tunable topological charge from 1 to 13 and beyond. Dynamic surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) is nowadays one of the most interesting applications of SERS, in particular for single molecule studies. In fact, it enables the study of real-time processes at the molecular level. This review summarizes the latest developments in dynamic SERS techniques and their applications, focusing on new instrumentation, data analysis methods, temporal resolution and sensitivity improvements, and novel substrates. We highlight the progress and applications of single-molecule dynamic SERS in monitoring chemical reactions, catalysis, biomolecular interactions, conformational dynamics, and real-time sensing and detection. We aim to provide a comprehensive review on its advancements, applications as well as its current challenges and development frontiers.

We propose a simple modification of space-based gravitational wave (GW) detector optical benches which would enable the measurement of vacuum birefringence of light induced by axion dark matterthrough its coupling to electromagnetism. Transition-metal dichalcogenides monolayers exhibit strong exciton resonances that enable intense light-matter interactions at room temperature (RT). However, the sensitivity of these materials to the surrounding environment and their intense interactions with the sustaining substrate result in the enhancement of excitonic losses through scattering, dissociation and defects formation, hindering their full potential for the excitation of optical nonlinearities in exciton-polariton platforms. From this point of view, the use of suspended monolayers holds the potential to completely eliminate substrate-induced losses, offering unique advantages for the investigation and exploitation of intrinsic electronic, mechanical, and optical properties of 2D materials based polaritonic systems, without any influence of proximity effects of all sort. In this work, we report a novel fabrication approach enabling the realization of a planar {\lambda}/2 microcavity filled with a suspended WS2 monolayer in its centre. In such a system, we experimentally demonstrate a 2-fold enhancement of the strong coupling at RT, due to reduced overall losses as compared to similar systems based on dielectric-filled microcavities. Moreover, as a result of minimized losses, spin-dependent polaritonic interactions in our platform are significantly amplified, leading to achievement of a record exciton interaction constant approaching the theoretically predicted value at RT, without making use of theoretical hypothesis on the effective polariton densities. This approach holds promises for pushing 2D materials-based polaritonic systems to their intrinsic limits, paving the way for the realization of novel polaritonic devices with superior performance.

Two-dimensional spectroscopy (2DS) offers significant advantages in terms of high temporal and frequency resolutions and signal-to-noise ratio. Until now, the response-function (RF) formalism has been the prevalent theoretical description. In this study, we compare the non-Hermitian Hamiltonian (NHH) method with the RF formalism in a three-level system with a constant control field. We obtain the signals from both approaches and compare their population dynamics and 2DS. We propose the quasi-Green function for the NHH method, which allows all possible Liouville paths to be inferred. Although the NHH method overestimates relaxations, it also provides a more comprehensive description. Our results demonstrate that the NHH method is more suitable than the RF formalism for investigating the systems that are either dissipative or complex via the 2DS.

Maximally localized Wannier functions use the gauge freedom of Bloch wavefunctions to define the optimally smooth subspace with matrix elements that depend smoothly on crystal momentum. The associated Wannier functions are real-space localized, a feature often used to Fourier interpolate periodic observables in reciprocal space on ultradense momentum grids. However, Fourier interpolation cannot handle non-periodic quantities in reciprocal space, such as the oscillator strength matrix elements, which are crucial for the evaluation of optical properties. We show that a direct multidimensional interpolation in the optimally smooth subspace yields comparable accuracy with respect to Fourier interpolation at a similar or lower computational cost. This approach can also interpolate and extrapolate non-periodic observables, enabling the calculation of optical properties on ultradense momentum grids. Finally, we underline that direct interpolation in the optimally smooth subspace can be employed for periodic and non-periodic tensors of any order without any information on the position of the Wannier centers in real space.

Programmable metasurfaces have recently attracted considerable interest for their versatile applications in areas such as beam steering, holography, and wireless communications, utilizing either phase or amplitude modulation. Despite this, programmable amplitude coding modulation has seen limited exploration, primarily due to the difficulties involved in achieving real-time dynamic amplitude control. Here, we propose a reprogrammable amplitude-coding metasurface utilizing the on-off Keying (OOK) method combined with frequency modulation. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time we will address both the design of the metasurface and the theoretical investigation of OOK simultaneously, considering all parameters present in the design, channel, and on-off ratio. The proposed metasurface comprises two layers of graphene with separate biasing voltages. By controlling the chemical potential of each layer, we can modulate the amplitude in two states at two frequencies through a field-programmable gate array (FPGA). In addition, we employ an information encryption method using the substitution cipher method and transmit it at two amplitude levels at distinct frequencies of f1 = 0.98 THz and f2 = 1.46 THz to safeguard transmission information against eavesdropping. Simulation and numerical results convincingly demonstrate that the proposed reprogrammable metasurface facilitates secure communication in multi-channel data encryption, terahertz (THz) data storage, information processing, and THz communication.

The common model to describe exciton-plasmon interaction phenomenologically is the coupled oscillator model. Originally developed for atomic systems rather than solid-state matter, this model treats both excitons and plasmons as single harmonic oscillators coupled via a constant which can be fitted to experiments. In this work, we present a modified coupled oscillator model specifically designed for exciton-plasmon interactions in hybrids composed of two-dimensional excitons, such as in a transition metal dichalcogenide (TMDC) monolayers and metal nanoparticles while maintaining the simplicity of the commonly applied coupled oscillator models. Our approach is based on a microscopic perspective and Maxwell's equations, allowing to analytically derive an effective exciton-plasmon coupling constant. Our findings highlight the importance of the spatial dispersion, i.e., the delocalized nature of TMDC excitons, necessitating the distinction between bright and momentum-dark excitons. Both types of excitons occur at different resonance energies and exhibit a qualitatively different coupling with localized plasmons. We find a strong coupling between the plasmon and momentum-dark excitons, while a weakly coupled bright exciton manifests as an additional, third peak in the spectrum. Consequently, we propose a realistic modeling of the primary spectral features in experiments incorporating three harmonic oscillator equations instead of the conventional two. However, we also shed light on the limitations of the three coupled oscillator model in describing the line shape of extinction and scattering cross section spectra.

The mathematical theory of braids, influential across scientific disciplines, has emerged as a compelling strategy for light manipulation. Existing approaches to creating braids in photonics, whether in momentum-space bandstructures or real-space fields, often face limitations associated with static nature of devices and lack of tunability. Here, we experimentally demonstrate ultrafast control of eigen-spectrum braids of Jones matrices within mere picoseconds, in reconfigurable non-Hermitian metasurfaces. The Jones matrices of the metasurface exhibit a complex eigen-spectrum that braids in the three-dimensional eigenvalue-frequency space, thereby creating arbitrary elements within the two-string braid group, B2. By exciting the photoconductive semiconductor terahertz metasurface with a femtosecond infrared pulse, we achieve ultrafast switching of the braids, transitioning from the Solomon link to either the Trefoil knot or Hopf link. Our approach serves as a pivotal tool for elucidating non-trivial topology of braids and studying ultrafast topological optoelectronics.

Quantum techniques are expected to revolutionize how information is acquired, exchanged, and processed. Yet it has been a challenge to realize and measure their values in practical settings. We present first photon machine learning as a new paradigm of neural networks and establish the first unambiguous advantage of quantum effects for artificial intelligence. By extending the physics behind the double-slit experiment for quantum particles to a many-slit version, our experiment finds that a single photon can perform image recognition at around $30\%$ fidelity, which beats by a large margin the theoretical limit of what a similar classical system can possibly achieve (about 24\%). In this experiment, the entire neural network is implemented in sub-attojoule optics and the equivalent per-calculation energy cost is below $10^{-24}$ joule, highlighting the prospects of quantum optical machine learning for unparalleled advantages in speed, capacity, and energy efficiency., Comment: 19 pages, 5 figures

Optical metasurfaces provide novel solutions to label-free biochemical sensing by localizing light resonantly beyond the diffraction limit, thereby selectively enhancing light-matter interactions for improved analytical performance. However, high-Q resonances in metasurfaces are usually achieved in the reflection mode, which impedes metasurface integration into compact imaging systems. Here, we demonstrate a novel metasurface platform for advanced biochemical sensing based on the physics of the bound states in the continuum (BIC) and electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) modes, which arise when two interfering resonances from a periodic pattern of tilted elliptic holes overlap both spectrally and spatially, creating a narrow transparency window in the mid-infrared spectrum. We experimentally measure these resonant peaks observed in transmission mode (Q~734 at ~8.8 um) in free-standing silicon membranes and confirm their tunability through geometric scaling. We also demonstrate the strong coupling of the BIC-EIT modes with a thinly coated PMMA film on the metasurface, characterized by a large Rabi splitting (32 cm-1) and biosensing of protein monolayers in transmission mode. Our new photonic platform can facilitate the integration of metasurface biochemical sensors into compact and monolithic optical systems while being compatible with scalable manufacturing, thereby clearing the way for on-site biochemical sensing in everyday applications.

Non-classical and entangled light states are of fundamental interest in quantum mechanics and they are a powerful tool for the emergence of new quantum technologies. The development of methods that can lead to the generation of such light states is therefore of high importance. Recently, we have demonstrated that intense laser-matter interactions can serve towards this direction. Specifically, we have shown how the use of fully quantized approaches in intense laser-matter interactions and the process of high harmonic generation, can lead to the generation high photon-number non-classical (optical Schr\"{o}dinger's "cat" or squeezed) and entangled states from the far-infrared (IR) to the extreme-ultraviolet (XUV). Here, after a brief introduction on the fundamentals, we summarize the operation principles of these approaches and we discuss the future directions of non-classical light engineering using strong laser fields, and the potential applications in ultrafast and quantum information science. Our findings open the way to a novel quantum nonlinear spectroscopy method, based on the interplay between the quantum properties of light with that of quantum matter., Comment: Invited Topical Review submitted to J.
