This paper presents a recently discovered and newly translated manuscript of a lecture by Heinrich Rudolf Hertz, long famous for his 1888 discovery of long-wavelength electromagnetic waves. Hertz delivered this address on 20 April 1885 as his inaugural lecture to the faculty at the Technische Hochschule in Karlsruhe (now the Universitat Karlsruhe), where he was to make his most important contributions to physics. Although written over 110 years ago, this historical document records both Hertz's insightful view of the Earth's energy situation at that time and his remarkably good order-of-magnitude estimates of the energy sources then known to be available to the Earth.

German physicist Werner Heisenberg delivered a lecture on obtaining fissile materials for an atomic bomb at the House of German Research on Feb. 26, 1942. He showed considerable knowledge about bomb physics and could have steered Germany into creating an atomic bomb if not for the vigilance of Allied forces.

The book 'At Home in the Universe' is a collection of essays and lectures by physicist John Wheeler. Many of the articles deal with the study of existence and Wheeler takes pleasure in the 'machinery of existence' that serves to highlight the book. These articles show Wheeler as an excellent teacher and a skilled communicator of ideas. His study of the role of curiosity and creativity in quantum research mirrors his dedication and the pleasure he gets out of it.

Supplementary lectures by university physicists may be effective in promoting interest in physics among introductory physics students, high school students and the university-wide community. Syracuse University has sponsored a lecture program for five years with great success. Physicists talk about their current research in simple language. Topics have included superconductivity, history of the universe, and progress in vision.

Physicist Hans A. Bethe spoke on his experiences as a teacher and his relationship with his students. Bethe especially favored educating garduate students working for their Ph.D, stating that he savored his long discussions with them about their concepts. He always founds it pleasing to observe the progression from the first meeting to the day when his students begin to tell him things he does not know. He stressed the importance of teaching quantum mechanics to physics students.

A prepared text read animatedly and spiced with ad-libs makes tolerable a discourse by physics speakers on an otherwise incomprehensible topic. Transparent plastic for mathematical figures and charts is also a valuable tool for the speaker.
