Etymology The species is named in honor of David T. Dockery III (Mississippi Bureau of Geology) who provided major support during our field work. Type locality and horizon United States of America, Wall Farm 1 (Texas), Weches Formation. Dimensions of the holotype Length = 3.16 mm; height = 2.11 mm; thickness = 0.93 mm. Description This species is characterized by elliptical otoliths with blunt, but well-marked antero- and postero-dorsal angles. The rim between those two angles is almost horizontal, but may be very slightly undulated in the smaller individuals (Fig. 18I). The posterior portion of the otoliths forms a tapering triangle. The ventral rim is smoothly curved with its deepest part in the middle of the otolith, providing it a regular rounded appearance. The anterior part of the otolith is slightly oblique and largely blunt at its lower, most prominent part. All the margins are smooth. The otoliths are moderately thick, with both the inner and outer faces convex. The thickness may be slightly more considerable near the posterior end, which is the case in the holotype (Fig. 18G). A straight sulcus occupies nearly the entire length of the inner face and is located in the central zone, but does not open to the margins of the otolith. There is a clear division into ostial and caudal parts, each fully filled by a colliculum. The cauda is about twice as long as the ostium. The cristae are clearly marked, but not ridge-like. They are almost horizontal, but the crista inferior may be slightly constricted at the collum, which is well visible in the holotype (Fig. 18G). Comparison The otoliths of this species can be distinguished from the co-occurring related species, S. meyeri (Koken, 1888), S. stintoni (Dante & Frizzell, 1965), “ N. ” rotundus (Müller, 1999), and “ N. ” virginicus Müller, 1999, by the combination of the following features: a more rectangular outline, a nearly flat dorsal rim, a more vertical anterior rim, a less extended posterior rim, and a dorsal area of similar width as the ventral one. Genus Symmetrosulcus Schwarzhans, 1981 Remarks The Neobythites -like otolith group includes three American species that are more closely related to each other than to anything else, and correspond to the extinct genus Symmetrosulcus Schwarzhans, 1981 (type species: Ot. (Ophidiidarum) dimidiatus Schubert, 1916). They are: S. dockeryi sp. nov., S. stintoni (Dante & Frizzell, 1965), and S. meyeri (Koken, 1888). The fossil otoliths of the southern USA have been known for more than 130 years and are among the richest assemblages worldwide. However, previous studies are often scattered and with outdated systematic scheme. A collection of over 25000 otoliths ranging in age from the Lutetian to the Priabonian from 47 sites in five states in the eastern and southern USA is analysed here. Combined with the earlier described material, at least 101 otolith-based taxa are documented, of which 83 are identified at species level. Fourteen of these are introduced as new species: Elopothrissus bernardlemorti sp. nov., “Muraenesox” barrytownensis sp. nov., Pseudophichthys texanus sp. nov., Paraconger wechesensis sp. nov., Neoopisthopterus weltoni sp. nov., “aff. Glyptophidium” stringeri sp. nov., Symmetrosulcus dockeryi sp. nov., Mene garviei sp. nov., “Citharus” varians sp. nov., Waitakia beelzebub sp. nov., Astroscopus compactus sp. nov., Parascombrops yanceyi sp. nov., Anisotremus rambo sp. nov., and Pagellus pamunkeyensis sp. nov. The assemblages are distinct fom contemporary European faunas by the complete lack of mesopelagic fish otoliths, and by the presence of sciaenids. Dominant taxa in the American Eocene are the Ophidiidae, Sciaenidae, Lactariidae, and Congridae. They indicate shallow-water environments for all the sampled sites. The notable abundance of those taxa suggests that they could have a higher turnover rate, and provided fundamental nutrition in the local Paleogene marine ecosystem. Further analyses of the species in the stratigraphic succession revealed that a faunal turnover between the Claiborne and Jackson seas was evident in teleosts, and it might be more widespread in other marine organisms in the region.

This checklist of the Mediterranean fishes of Israel enumerates 469 species which is an addition of 62 species since the previous checklist of 2005. This new checklist includes 58 Condrichthys and 411 Osteicthys species. Most newly-recorded species are of Red Sea origin (Lessepsian migrants)—38 species, 25 species are from previously poorly investigated habitats, mainly deep water, while two species reached the Mediterranean most likely by ballast water and two are aquaculture escapees. The dramatic increase in the number of Lessepsian migrants (an average of 2.5 species per year) is most likely due to the increased water influx between the Red Sea and the Mediterranean, following the recent opening of the new parallel, 72 km, “new canal” and the enlargement of other parts of the Suez Canal.

This is an annotated checklist of the marine fish species of Lebanon (Levant coast, eastern Mediterranean). It comprises a total of 367 fish species distributed in 159 families and 27 orders, out of which 70 species are non-indigenous and 28 are recorded for the first time from Lebanon. The checklist includes all names and citations of species found in the literature, as well as references to specimens available in museum collections. It also includes an updated zoogeographic distribution and conservation status for each species. Threats were estimated based on surveys and observations made over the last two decades; broadly categorized conservation actions were also suggested.

The Brazilian codling Urophycis mystacea (Phycidae-Gadiformes) is a demersal-benthic species, present at the outer shelf and slope of Southeastern Brazil. Its stock has been declining since 2001, when it became a target species for the bottom trawling fleet, which went fishing between the outer shelf and the upper slope. In this study, we present results on the annual periodicity and deposition time of otolith rings, age, growth parameters and, relationships between otolith morphometric variables and age. Males were 1 to 6 years old, and females were 1 to 12 years old. The maximum likelihood ratio test proved that von Bertalanffy growth equations obtained for males and females were significantly different; respectively, Ct =419.33[1-exp-0.35(t-(-0.55))] and Ct=629.89[1-exp-0.17(t-(-0.89))]. The Potential Model presented the best fit for the relationship between the otolith morphometric variables and the fish age and its robustness, verified by the coefficient of determination values (R2). The otolith weight, followed by length, was the most adequate variables to estimate age.

Including early life history data in assessments can improve fisheries management by increasing our knowledge of stock structure, spawning habitat, and population trends. The identification of fish larvae to species is a necessary step in using early life history data toward this goal. Three species of hakes from the genus Urophycis are common on the northeast United States continental shelf: U. chuss or Red Hake, U. regia or Spotted Hake, and U. tenuis or White Hake. Unfortunately, identification of larval Urophycis has long been only possible at the genus level. Larvae of Urophycis (n = 277) collected in a subset of ethanol-preserved samples were identified genetically through sequencing of the cytochrome oxidase I gene and were used to update morphological descriptions with characters that separate these three species at the larval stage. Sequencing occurred in two stages: the first (n = 88) to develop a set of known-identity larvae to define species-specific traits, the second (n = 189) to test morphological identification based on the traits described in this study. We describe a combination of the location of dorsal and ventral pigment, head pigment, lower jaw pigment, and the timing of development of the pectoral fins to distinguish the larvae of these three species at sizes

The collection of the Museu Oceanográfico D. Carlos I is a historical specimen, instrument, and document collection that has been housed at the Aquário Vasco da Gama since 1935. The collection is largely the result of several scientific campaigns conducted by Dom Carlos de Bragança between 1896 and 1907. Specifically, the ichthyological collection consists of 675 surviving catalogue records of specimens caught, acquired or offered to D. Carlos I between 1892 to 1907, and includes the type specimen for Odontaspisnasutus Bragança, 1904 (junior synonym of Mitsukurinaowstoni Jordan, 1898), along with several specimens of deep sea species. All specimens were captured in coastal Portuguese waters, and were preserved in alcohol, formalin, or mounted.

The diet and feeding behaviour of the forkbeard Phycis phycis was studied based on 246 stomachs collected between May 2011 and April 2012 from a commercial fleet operating off the central west coast of Portugal. A total of 44 prey items were identified in the stomachs which were merged into major groups to avoid problems with low expected frequencies. The following taxonomic categories were considered: non-decapod Crustacea, Caridea, Anomura, Munida spp., Processa spp., Brachyura, Pisces, Trisopterus luscus. In order to investigate possible diet differences between fish size classes, a cluster analysis was performed using the mean abundance of each prey group by forkbeard 5 cm length class, and three length groups (LG) were obtained: 42.5 cm. Seasonally, Caridea was the main prey group during winter and autumn while Pisces was predominant during the rest of the year. Caridea was the most important prey group for LG1 and LG2 while in LG3 Pisces was the principal one. The forkbeard feeding behaviour may be characterized as presenting a shift pattern from a more generalist diet (small Crustacea, mainly Caridea) in the young adults to a more specialist strategy (teleosts) in the adults.

Clavella alata Brian, 1909 (Siphonostomatoida; Lernaeopodidae) was reported on Phycis blennoides (Brünnich, 1768) in Turkey. Phycis blennoides (Gadiformes; Phycidae) is a new host for Clavella alata in Turkey. Also, some of the morphological characteristics of this parasitic copepod are given in photographs and drawings.

Keys are provided for the identification of the nematode species known to be parasites of Canadian fishes. The nematodes are described and illustrated, with a note of the site(s) they occupy in named fish host(s) and their geographical distribution. Parasite records are given by author and date, full details of which can be found in a bibliography of over 800 references. Diagnoses and keys for 22 Families, 47 genera and 88 species of nematodes are also given, together with a glossary of terms, a host-parasite list, and indices to both nematode parasites and hosts.

The purpose of this application, under Articles 29 and 55.3 of the Code, is to remove homonymy between the family-group names phycinae Swainson, 1838 (Osteichthyes, Gadiformes, phycidae) and phycinae Lyneborg, 1976 (Insecta, Diptera, therevidae). It is proposed that the stem of the genus-group name Phycus Walker, 1850, on which the insect family-group name is based, be emended to change the family-group name to phycusinae, leaving the fish family-group name, based on Phycis Walbaum, 1792, unaltered. An issue regarding the type-species of Phycis Walbaum, 1792, came to light in this process, namely that the previously assumed type species, Tinca marina (attributed to Walbaum (1792) and considered a junior synonym of Blennius phycis Linnaeus, 1766), is a nomen nudum. So, an additional purpose of this application, under Articles 78.1 and 81.1 of the Code, is to maintain the prevailing usage of Blennius phycis Linnaeus, 1766 as the de facto type species of Phycis Walbaum, 1792 by setting aside all previous type species designations and designating Blennius phycis Linnaeus, 1766 as the type species.

Urophycis brasiliensis can be distinguished from its congeners by the following combination of characters: third ray of first dorsal fin thicker and elongated, forming a filament with 16–45% SL (vs. third ray of first dorsal fin neither thicker, nor forming a filament in U. cirrata, U. earllii, U. floridana, U. mystacea, and U. regia); longest filamentous pelvic-fin ray 34–61% SL, reaching well beyond anus (vs. longest filamentous pelvicfin ray 22–30% in SL, not reaching or barely reaching anus in U. chuss, U. earlli, U. floridana, U. regia, and U. tenuis). It further differs from U. earllii, U. floridana, and U. regia by having body uniformly brown with darker pigmentation on the edge of first and second dorsals, anal, and caudal fins (vs. dark overall color with sides mottled in U. earllii; body uniformly colored with a series of black spots on head and dashes along lateral line; and first dorsal fin with a dark blotch and distinct white margin in U. regia); and from U. chuss, U. cirrata, U. mystacea, and U. regia by having two, rarely three, gill rakers on the upper limb of the first gill arch (vs. three, rarely two). Body elongated, laterally compressed, caudal peduncle tapering. Greatest depth of body at level of first third of body. Head enlarged, about one fourth in SL, dorso-ventrally compressed. Upper Jaw moderateraly protusible. Upper lip with dermal flange, hiding premaxilla and dentary when closed mouth. Lower Jaw with small dermal flange, forming minute, but well defined lip. Tip of snout rounded in dorsal view. Mouth terminal; gape of mouth enlarged; posterior tip of upper Jaw reaching level of vertical that passes through posterior margin of orbit. Eyes well developed, slightly elongated anterodorsally; margin of eye free. Nares distinctly separated; distance between nares about equal to distance between posterior naris and eye; posterior margin of anterior naris expanded, forming short, tubular, fleshy rim; posterior naris slightly oval, with tubular, fleshy rim absent. A commented checklist containing 139 species of marine fishes recorded at the Galician Bank seamount is presented. The list is based on nine prospecting and research surveys carried out from 1980 to 2011 with different fishing gears. The ichthyofauna list is diversified in 2 superclasses, 3 classes, 20 orders, 62 families and 113 genera. The largest family is Macrouridae, with 9 species, followed by Moridae, Stomiidae and Sternoptychidae with 7 species each. The trachichthyd Hoplostethus mediterraneus and the morid Lepidion lepidion were the most abundant species. Biogeographically, the Atlantic group, with 113 species (81.3%) is the best represented, followed by the Lusitanian one with 17 species (12.2%). Data on species abundance, as number of individuals caught, size and depth are reported. Habitat, distribution and vulnerability status are commented. Moreover, biometric data and meristic counts are also reported for several species. The results obtained showing a high fish biodiversity and a sensible number of threatened species, strongly support the future declaration of the Galicia Bank as a Marine Protected Area., SI

Background. The greater forkbeard, Phycis blennoides (Brunnich, 1768), is a gadiform species, which has economical value and its population is dwelling in a 60–800 m depth range throughout the Atlantic and the Mediterranean. Along African north coast, there is a lack of information about the biology (age, growth, sex-ratio) of this species. This study provides the first data on population parameters of P. blennoides in Tunisia. Materials and Methods. Specimens of Phycis blennoides were collected from the landings of the artisanal fisheries between September 2007 and June 2010. The length–weight relations were determined according to the allometric equation: W = aTLb. Growth parameters were estimated using the von Bertalanffy growth equation. Results. Length (TL)–Weight (W) relations were allometrically positive for the females (W = 22.10–4TL3.409), males (W = 13.10–4TL3.674), and both sexes (W = 19.10–4TL3.460), without significant differences between males and females. The relation between otolith weight and age showed a significant difference between males and females. The growth parameters were calculated as TL∞ = 57.17 cm, K = 0.193 · year–1, t0 = –1.578 · year for the females, and 44.74 cm, 0.313 · year–1, and –1.210 · year for the males, respectively. The females grew faster than the males which did not exceed 45 cm. The growth performance index Ф' calculated for the females (2.80 cm· year –1) and males (2.79 cm· year –1) yielded similar results. Conclusion. Results reported in this work will contribute to the knowledge on the biology of P. blennoides in Tunisia, with the aim of generating sufficient information to improve future stock management and sustainable fisheries.

WOS: 000368251100003, Background. Bottom trawling is an important fishing technique for catching demersal fish, and selectivity is one of the most important tools for fishery management. This study aimed to determine the selectivity of 40 mm square- (40S) and 90 degrees turned-mesh (40T90) codend for the deepwater rose shrimp, Parapenaeus longirostris, and greater forkbeard, Phycis blennoides (Brunnich, 1768). Material and methods. Fishing experiments were conducted on the international waters of the Aegean Sea by using a commercial vessel between 24 August and 13 September 2012. The hooped covered codend technique was employed for the estimated codend selectivity. The selectivity parameters were estimated by using CC 2000 software. Results. Nineteen successful hauls, 11 with 40S, and 8 with 40T90 codends, were performed. The mean L-50 values (50% retention length) of 40S and 40T90 were found to be a 15.5 +/- 0.1 mm and 14.8 +/- 0.1 mm carapace lengths for the rose shrimp, and 15.3 +/- 0.1 cm and 12.2 +/- 0.1 cm total lengths for the greater forkbeard, respectively. Conclusion. In conclusion, 165 square meshes in a codend circumference with 40 mm mesh sizes provided higher L-50 values than the 40 mm turned meshes, and 330 meshes around the codend circumference. Secondary structure features of mitochondrial ribosomal RNAs (mt-rRNAs) of bony fishes were investigated by a DNA sequence alignment approach. The small subunit (SSU) and large subunit (LSU) mt-rRNA genes were found to contain several additional variable regions compared to their mammalian counterparts. Fish mt-LSU rRNA genes were found to be longer than the mammalians due to increased length of some of the variable regions. The 5' and 3' ends of Atlantic cod mt-rRNAs were precisely mapped. The 3' ends of mt-SSU rRNAs were found to be homogenous and mono-adenylated, whereas that of the mt-LSU rRNAs were heterogenous and oligo-adenylated. The 5' ends of mt-SSU rRNAs appeared to be heterogenous, corresponding to the presumed first and second positions of the gene. Sequences of the central domain and the D-domain of the mt-SSU and mt-LSU rRNA genes, respectively, were determined and characterized for 11 gadiform species (representing the families Gadidae, Lotidae, Ranicipitidae, Merlucciidae, Phycidae, and Macrouridae) and one Lophiidae species. Detailed secondary structure models of the RNA regions are presented for the Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) and Roundnose grenadier (Coryphaeonides rupestris). Saturation plots revealed that DNA nucleotide positions corresponding to unpaired RNA regions become saturated with transitions at sequence divergence levels about 0.15. Phylogenetic analyses revealed some aspects of gadiform relationships. Gadidae was identified as the most derived of the gadiform families. Lotidae was found to be the family closest related to Gadidae, and Ranicipitidae was also recognized as a derived gadiform taxon.

Bathycreadium brayi n. sp. is described based on specimens collected from the deep-sea greater forkbeard Phycis blennoides (Brunnich) (Gadiformes: Phycidae) in the Western Mediterranean. The new species is distinguished from B. flexicolle Kabata, 1961, B. elongata (Maillard, 1970) and B. nanaflexicolle Dronen, Rubec & Underwood, 1977 by the much smaller size of the body and most organs, the large (in relation to body length and width) ventral sucker and the distinctly more anterior extent of the vitelline fields and from B. biscayense Bray, 1973 in having a narrower body, longer forebody and oesophagus, distinctly smaller ventral sucker and sucker width ratio and the shape of the gonads. Re-examination of the type-material of B. biscayense revealed that the original description of this species is based on composite material. A redescription of B. biscayense based on adult specimens from its type-host, Trachyrincus scabrus (Rafinesque), and new data based on the re-examination of the type-specimens of B. flexicolle and B. elongata are also provided.

The study of the Portuguese marine ichthyofauna has a long historical tradition, rooted back in the 18th Century. Here we present an annotated checklist of the marine fishes from Portuguese waters, including the area encompassed by the proposed extension of the Portuguese continental shelf and the Economic Exclusive Zone (EEZ). The list is based on historical literature records and taxon occurrence data obtained from natural history collections, together with new revisions and occurrences. It comprises a total of 1191 species, distributed among 3 superclasses, 4 classes, 42 orders, 212 families and 617 genera. If considering only the EEZ and present territorial waters, this list represents an increase of 230 species (27.8%) and of 238 species (29.0%), when compared to the information available in FishBase (2012) and in the last checklist of marine and estuarine fishes of Portugal (1993), respectively. The order Perciformes shows the highest diversity, with 54 families, 162 genera and 299 species. Stomiidae (80 species), Myctophidae (71 species) and Macrouridae (37 species) are the richest families. From the listed species, 734 are present off mainland Portugal, 857 off the Azores and 766 off Madeira. Within the limits of the examined area, three species are reported for the first time in mainland Portugal and twenty-nine records are identified as doubtful. A total of 133 species have been recorded from the extended Portuguese continental shelf (2 off mainland Portugal, 117 off the Azores and 14 off Madeira), two of which are common to the Azores and Madeira extensions. Biogeographically, the Atlantic group is the most important (548 species – 46.01%), followed by the Lusitanian group (256 species – 21.49%), the African group (71 species – 5.96%), the Boreal group (34 species – 2.85%), the Mediterranean group (31 species – 2.60%), the Macaronesian group (21 species – 1.76%), the Atlantic/African group (19 species – 1.60%) and the Mediterranean/African and the Arctic groups, each with only 1 species (0.08%). Regarding the preferences for vertical habitat, the demersal fishes are the most important group (305 species – 25.61%), followed by the mesopelagic group (228 species – 19.14%), the bathypelagic group (164 species – 13.77%), the benthopelagic group (147 species – 12.34%), the bathydemersal group (115 species – 9.66%), the reef-associated group (88 species – 7.39%), the pelagic group (74 species – 6.21%), the epipelagic group (58 species – 4.87%) and 1 species (0.08%) of the benthic group. The oceanic habitat is the best represented group comprising 446 species (37.45%), followed by the shelf group (199 species – 16.71%), the slope group (164 species – 13.77%), the inner shelf group (89 species – 7.47%), the coastal group (70 species – 5.88%), the outer shelf group (29 species – 2.43%) and the oceanic/shelf group (7 species – 0.59%).

The drawings, detailed pictures, precise descriptions and measurements that characterize otoliths must be made available for studies in various areas, including taxonomy, phylogeny, ecology, fisheries, paleontology, diversity, predator-prey relationships and modeling. The Collection of Teleostei Fish Otoliths of Southeastern-Southern Brazil (COSS-Brasil) of IOUSP contains 45,000 pairs of otoliths from 210 species. This publication is the first in a series that will constitute an atlas of Teleostei otoliths for southeastern-southern Brazil and presents the results of the morphologic and morphometric analyses of 11 Gadiformes and 36 Perciformes species by means of the most commonly used features, measurements and indices. Three otoliths of each species were illustrated and photographed whenever possible. The frequency of occurrence was calculated for each characteristic by total length classes (TL), and the ontogenetic differences were analyzed (multiple χ2 test; significance 0.05). Morphometric analyses were conducted for each characteristic per total length (TL) class and for the whole sample, and the ontogenetic differences were analyzed. A disponibilidade de desenhos, fotos detalhadas, descrições precisas e medidas que caracterizem os otólitos são ferramentas imprescindíveis para diversas áreas: taxonomia, filogenia, ecologia, pesca, paleontologia, diversidade, relações presa/predador e modelagem. Da Coleção de Otólitos de Peixes Teleósteos da Região Sudeste-Sul do Brasil (COSS-Brasil), IOUSP, constam quarenta e cinco mil pares relativos a 210 espécies. Esta publicação é a primeira de uma série que constituirá um atlas de otólitos para Teleostei da região sudeste-sul brasileira e apresenta os resultados de análises morfológicas e morfométricas de 11 espécies de Gadiformes e 36 de Perciformes das medidas e índices usualmente realizados. Foram desenhados e fotografados três otólitos de cada espécie sempre que possível. A frequência de ocorrência foi calculada por classes de comprimento total (TL) e para toda a amostra, e diferenças ontogenéticas foram analisadas.

The forkbeard, Phycis phycis (Linnaeus, 1766), is a species widely distributed throughout the Mediterranean and Adriatic Sea and although it is of great importance for fishing industry, little is known about its reproductive characteristics. This study provides first data on reproductive characteristics of this species in the Mediterranean, important for management and stock assessment. For this purpose a total of 550 individuals ranging from 19.9 to 45.8 cm in total length were collected monthly in a period of one year using trammel nets. Sex ratio of males to females was 0.62:1. The estimated length where 50% of analysed individuals were sexually mature was 30.98 cm for females and 32.98 cm males. The peak value of gonadosomatic index was recorded in November and continued throughout the December, indicating the highest spawning activity. This period is characterized by presence of oocytes with migrated nucleus and yolk coalesces in ovary and spermatozoa in testes.

Between August 1993 and September 1995, aspects of reproduction of female Urophycis brasiliensis (Phycidae), a euryhaline species found in the Western Atlantic between 23° and 40° S, were studied. A total of 2500 specimens (23–60 cm; 113–2400 g) were obtained from artisanal fishermen at two locations on the Uruguayan coast: Piriapolis, influenced by the discharge of the Rio de la Plata, and La Paloma, a marine site. The ovaries of 900 fish, analysed according to standard histological techniques, revealed eight maturity stages, including one virgin ovary obtained from the catch of a research vessel. The gonadosomatic index ranged from 0.13 to 8.7. Its maximum was determined in the autumn in La Paloma, whereas a shift towards the winter was observed in Piriapolis. In both capture areas, resting stage 2 was present in the samples throughout the year, reaching 67% of the total. At no time were hydrated ovaries observed. The histological cycle is described and compared with macroscopic features of the female gonad. Maturity stages determined in the field had to be confirmed by histological analysis in order to avoid erroneous classification. Although the two ports are only 150 km apart, data indicate different and extended reproductive periods, between June and December for Piriapolis, and March to May for La Paloma. Data indicate synchronous group spawning, possibly as a reproductive strategy in a highly variable environment. The results are compared with scarce information available on U. brasiliensis in its distribution area and data on other species of the same genus.

Specimens of Phycis blennoides were collected in the Ionian Sea by means of trawl surveys from August 1993 to July 1995. Ripe females and mature males were caught during November through January and between August and March, respectively. Recruitment, represented by individuals of 6–8 cm total length modal group, took place during March at depths between 200 and 600 m. Modal progression analysis of juveniles indicated a growth rate of about 1 cm/month during the first year. Otoliths were examined from juveniles. A transition zone was generally observed in the otolith nucleus. Females and males had mean size of 15.6 and 15.4 cm TL, respectively, during the first year, while during the 2nd year individuals attained a mean size of 20.7 and 20.3 cm TL, respectively. The fastest growth occurred during the spring and summer seasons.
