Abstract

We studied the photoproduction of dileptons from strong electromagnetic fields generated by the nucleus in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. The production of dileptons is calculated based on the Equivalent Photon Approximation (EPA) method, which depends on the strength of the electromagnetic fields and the density of protons in the nucleus. With the EPA method, we construct the connections between dilepton photoproduction and the electromagnetic form factors in the nucleus. Finally, the nuclear proton densities can be determined with the dilepton photoproduction, which is employed to extract the neutron skin in the nucleus. Our calculations indicate that the dilepton photoproduction varies evidently with different proton densities in the nucleus, suggesting a deeper symmetry underlying the connections between proton density (or the neutron skin) and the dilepton photoproduction. Abstract

Abstract

In this work, we study the photoproduction of ρ$$ \rho $$ mesons considering the proton and the nucleus as the target. Utilizing the dipole picture and the wave functions obtained via AdS/QCD, we were able to describe the HERA γp$$ \gamma p $$ data and extend the formalism to the nuclear case considering the Glauber–Gribov model. The preliminary results obtained in the nuclear regime are compared to the recent LHC PbPb→ρPbPb$$ PbPb\to \rho PbPb $$ data and suggest the presence of a nuclear effect called shadowing. Abstract

The exclusive photo‐ and electroproduction of light vector mesons like ρ,ω,$$ \rho, \omega, $$ and ϕ$$ \phi $$ is studied in γp$$ \gamma p $$ collisions within the color dipole formalism with vector meson wave functions obtained using the AdS/QCD holographic approach. This setup provides a good description of the existing data for the ground vector mesons ρ(1S),ω(1S),andϕ(1S)$$ \rho (1S),\kern0.3em \omega (1S),\kern0.3em \mathrm{and}\kern0.3em \phi (1S) $$ and permits us to make predictions for the corresponding excited states. The results show significant theoretical uncertainties related to modeling the partial dipole amplitude, which can be constrained with upcoming measurements in future hadron colliders. Abstract

We report a first measurement of the double-polarisation observable, Cx′, in π+ photoproduction off the proton. The Cx′ double-polarisation observable represents the transfer of polarisation from a circularly polarised photon beam to the recoiling neutron. The MAMI circularly polarised photon beam impinged on a liquid deuterium target cell, with reaction products detected in the Crystal Ball calorimeter. Ancillary apparatus surrounding the target provided tracking, particle identification and determination of recoil nucleon polarisation. The Cx′ observable is determined for photon energies 800-1400 MeV, providing new constraints on models aiming to elucidate the spectrum and properties of nucleon resonances. This is the first determination of any polarisation observable from the beam-recoil group of observables for this reaction. Inclusion of the new data in the database of the SAID partial wave analysis shifted the solution to a new global minima which, not only gives better agreement with the current data, but also improves the description of a range of other single and double polarisation observables for charged pion photoproduction.

6. Carbon Monoxide Cycling in the Eastern Indian Ocean.

Abstract

Carbon monoxide (CO) is an indirect greenhouse gas and a crucial component of the global carbon cycle. The ocean is an important source of atmospheric CO, but the factors controlling the sources and sinks of CO in the marine environment remain uncertain. For the first time, the spatial distribution, production, and removal pathways of seawater CO (including photoproduction, dark production, microbial consumption, and sea‐to‐air exchange) were systematically investigated in the Eastern Indian Ocean. The abundance and component source of chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM) dominated the photoproduction and dark production rates of CO, and the net CO production rate was 2.19 ± 0.71 nmol L−1 d−1 (mean ± SD). The ratio of CO photoproduction efficiencies (normalized by solar radiation) for ultraviolet B radiation (UVB): ultraviolet A radiation (UVA): photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) was 854: 39: 1, while UVA was the most significant contributor to surface CO photoproduction due to the stronger radiation intensity. In the mixed layer, UVB, UVA, and PAR were estimated to contribute 12% ± 5%, 38% ± 8%, and 50% ± 8% (mean ± SD) to CO photoproduction, respectively. The total removal of CO by microbial consumption (96%) and sea‐to‐air exchange (1%) accounted for 97% of the total production. Overall, the sources and sinks of CO kept a dynamic balance in the mixed layer. Our comprehensive approach provides in‐detail insights into the understanding of CO cycling processes in the Eastern Indian Ocean, which is scientifically important for understanding the bio‐geochemical cycling and climate effects of CO in the Eastern Indian Ocean, and also provides additional data support for the CO global cycle modeling studies. Plain Language Summary: The Eastern Indian Ocean is one of the world's most active monsoonal regions and an essential component of the Indian Ocean warm pool. In addition, there is an extensive oxygen minimum zone in the Eastern Indian Ocean. Despite the potential impact of this region on the global CO cycle, only a few studies have been carried out. Here, we explored the controlling factors leading to the heterogeneous distribution of CO in the surface seawater of the Eastern Indian Ocean by studying sources and sinks. We also simulated CO photoproduction in the mixed layer, where light attenuation affects wavebands differently, and evaluated the corresponding CO budget. This study provides in‐detail insights into the CO cycling processes in the Eastern Indian Ocean. Abstract

The exclusive photoproduction of Υ ( nS ) meson states from protons, γ p → Υ ( nS ) p (with n = 1 , 2 , 3 ), is studied in ultraperipheral p Pb collisions at a centre-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of s NN = 5.02 TeV . The measurement is performed using the Υ ( nS ) → μ + μ - decay mode, with data collected by the CMS experiment corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 32.6 nb - 1 . Differential cross sections as functions of the Υ ( nS ) transverse momentum squared p T 2 , and rapidity y, are presented. The Υ ( 1 S ) photoproduction cross section is extracted in the rapidity range | y | < 2.2 , which corresponds to photon-proton centre-of-mass energies in the range 91 < W γ p < 826 GeV . The data are compared to theoretical predictions based on perturbative quantum chromodynamics and to previous measurements.

9. Revisiting NLO QCD corrections to total inclusive J/ψ and ϒ photoproduction cross sections in lepton-proton collisions

Abstract

We revisit inclusive J/ψ and ϒ photoproduction at lepton-hadron colliders, namely in the limit when the exchanged photon is quasi real. Our computation includes the next-to-leading-order (NLO) αs corrections to the leading-order contributions in v. Similarly to the case of NLO charmonium-hadroproduction processes, the resulting cross sections obtained in the MS‾ factorisation scheme are sometimes found to be negative. We show that the scale-fixing criterion which we derived in a previous study of ηc production successfully solves this problem from the EicC all the way up to the FCC-eh energies. We then elaborate on how to study a scale uncertainty akin to that derived by scale variations when one fixes a scale. In turn, we investigate where both J/ψ and ϒ photoproduction could be used to improve our knowledge of gluon content of the proton at scales as low as a couple of GeV.

10. Understanding pion photoproduction using chiral perturbation theory

Abstract

In this thesis we present the work we have done to further the understanding of neutral pion photoproduction from the proton. Our work used heavy-baryon chiral perturbation theory to fourth order, and we explicitly include the ∆(1232) resonance using the delta power-counting scheme. We also test the effects of including and excluding D-waves, partial waves with orbital angular momentum quantum number of 2. We begin our discussion in chapter 1 with a brief history of nuclear physics before showing how current algebras and the partial-conservation of the axial-vector current (PCAC) can be used to describe low-energy hadronic interactions. To improve upon PCAC results, one can make use of chiral effective field theories, taking advantage of the chiral symmetry that is present in the limit of massless quarks. We formally introduce chiral perturbation theory (χPT) in chapter 2, discussing the power-counting problem that arises once baryons are included, and present two different approaches to overcome this. We conclude chapter 2 showing how the theory can be extended to include the ∆(1232) resonance. In chapter 3 we describe the model-independent framework of pion photoproduction needed to describe both theory and experiment. We discuss the various recent efforts to describe pion photoproduction within χPT in the latter half of chapter 3. We lay out the framework we have developed in chapter 4 and present our results in chapter 5. We have compared our work to the recent experimental data released by the A2 and CB-TAPS collaborations at the Mainz Microtron. Our results show that we can accurately describe the data from threshold up to an in-coming laboratory photon energy of approximately 260 MeV, a clear improvement on previous studies. We find that including the ∆ is necessary to describe the data beyond E γ ≈ 200 MeV, but the case for D-waves is not so clear. We cannot pinpoint an energy where their inclusion is necessary but we do find evidence suggesting they are important to improve the stability of the fit. Our best results require the inclusion of both the ∆ and D-waves. Finally, in chapter 6, we present our concluding remarks from what has been achieved over the last four years of study and what forms possible extensions of our work could take.

Abstract

Abstract The exclusive photoproduction of $$\mathrm {\Upsilon }\mathrm {(nS)} $$ Υ(nS) meson states from protons, $$\gamma \mathrm {p} \rightarrow \mathrm {\Upsilon }\mathrm {(nS)} \,\mathrm {p}$$ γp→Υ(nS)p (with $$\mathrm {n}=1,2,3$$ n=1,2,3 ), is studied in ultraperipheral $$\mathrm {p}$$ p Pb collisions at a centre-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of $$\sqrt{\smash [b]{s_{_{\mathrm {NN}}}}} = 5.02\,\text {TeV} $$ sNN=5.02TeV . The measurement is performed using the $$\mathrm {\Upsilon }\mathrm {(nS)} \rightarrow \mu ^+\mu ^-$$ Υ(nS)→μ+μ- decay mode, with data collected by the CMS experiment corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 32.6$$\,\text {nb}^{-1}$$ nb-1 . Differential cross sections as functions of the $$\mathrm {\Upsilon }\mathrm {(nS)} $$ Υ(nS) transverse momentum squared $$p_{\mathrm {T}} ^2$$ pT2 , and rapidity y, are presented. The $$\mathrm {\Upsilon (1S)}$$ Υ(1S) photoproduction cross section is extracted in the rapidity range $$|y |< 2.2$$ |y|
