The work of Eadweard Muybridge as a pioneer of chronophotography has undergone a major reevaluation and historicization in recent years that has nonetheless left intact certain myths about his artistic interests and intentions: his purported disinterest in image synthesis and the tendency of scholars to consider his career in distinct, unrelated phases. This paper carefully examines Muybridge's landscape photography (especially of Yosemite in 1867 and 1872) to argue that this work is directly related to his chronophotographic experiments on the levels of intention and technical execution. I employ a number of historical artifacts and compare Muybridge's output to that of his contemporaries like Carleton Watkins and Etienne-Jules Marey to show that the rendering of landscape was a major catalyst of Muybridge's subsequent (and in some cases directly contemporaneous) experiments in motion imaging.
