Arenophilic glands represent the only molluscan example of multicellular organs solely concerned with adhesion of foreign particles to the external surfaces of an organism. The glands are exclusive to the bivalve clade omalodesmata, but do not occur in all component taxa, having been declared absent in a number of families, including Pholadomyidae. This paper records and describes for the first time the arenophilic apparatus of Pholadomya candida G. B. Sowerby I, 1823, and demonstrates that secretion from these glands is at times preserved in the fossil record. In P. candida , arenophilic glands in the middle mantle folds discharge their products on top of the shell as the animal grows, forming radial lines of secretion that comprise a meandering main strand and numerous thin threads projecting in tufts. The arrangement is similar to that of other families, corroborating the hypothesis that the glands are a synapomorphy of crown-group anomalodesmatans. Instances of preserved secretion in fossil Pholadomya, ranging in age almost to the initial appearance of the genus in the Late Triassic, suggest that fossilized arenophilic secretion may aid systematic studies of problematic fossil groups traditionally included in Anomalodesmata.

Bentholyonsia teramachii has hitherto been described from Japan, but a conspecific specimen is herein recorded from Western Australian shelf waters at a depth of ∼100 m. Hitherto placed in the Lyonsiidae, B. teramachii is herein relocated in the Lyonsiellidae, alongside a second genus –Lyonsiella. Features of the anatomy of Bentholyonsiateramachii, including highly sensory siphons, reduced ctenidia unable to collect and transport particulate food, non-sorting labial palps, and a simplified Type II stomach and muscular gut all suggest that the species is a predator like Lyonsiella formosa. Other features of the anatomy, such as pallial taenioid muscles, radial mantle glands, and the structure of the ctenidia all point to a link between B. teramachii and the Lyonsiellidae and thus with the Verticordiidae and Parilimyidae and, therefore, with some of the oldest anomalodesmatans, the Pholadomyidae. In the possession by B. teramachii of a unique pair of antero-dorsal suspensory muscles, the link with fossil pholadomyoideans is reinforced. Bentholyonsia thus represents another genus of predatory bivalve, not only expanding our view of the prevalence of this feeding mode in the deep sea by this class but also helping us show how it evolved, in anatomical terms, from a suspension- (or deposit-) feeding ancestor.

Material examined. Three internal moulds with small pieces of shell. See Appendix 1 for list of specimens. Description. Shell small to medium, elongated, outline ovoid; no carina. Umbonal area positioned submedialy. Umbones not preserved. Ornament of up to 13 ventrally directed chevrons, with ridges and depressions between them roughly equal in size. Chevron ridges gently rounded with both ventral and dorsal slopes inclined at an equal angle. At younger growth stages tips of chevrons often blunt so whole ornament is trapezoidal or w-shaped. Line transecting tips of chevrons slightly inclined towards shell posterior. Angle between chevron limbs between 85 and 95 degrees. Chevron ornament transected by weak, concentric growth lines. Pallial line unknown. Remarks. The oval shape of our specimens with almost equilaterally positioned beaks puts them into Goniomya literata (J. Sowerby, 1819) (e.g. Arkell 1934; Frsich 1982). The Svalbard specimens differs from G. bicarinata Frsich, 1982, from Greenland, which has a much longer posterior and two distinct carinae running from the umbo towards the anteroventral and posteroventral margins, respectively. Occurrence. Seeps 3 and 9 (Upper Volgianuppermost Ryazanian), Slottsmya Member, Svalbard (Tab. 1). Goniomya literata is relatively wide-spread (Hallam 1976) and is known from the Middle Jurassic of England (e.g. Arkell 1934), Lithuania (Krenkel 1915), Spitsbergen (Bckstrm & Nagy 1985) and the Upper Jurassic of England (Arkell 1934; Clausen & Wignall 1990), Greenland (e.g. Frsich 1982) and Spitsbergen (Sokolov & Bodylevsky 1931). The genus Goniomya had much wider distribution and is common in many Jurassic fine-grained rocks (e.g. Trautschold 1865; Gerasimov 1955; Koshelkina 1962; Zakharov & Mesezhnikov 1974; Pugaczewska 1986). Palaeoecology. We assume that G. literata was a deep-burrowing suspension feeder, by comparison with its extant relative Pholadomya candida J. de C. Sowerby, 1823 (Morton 1980). This species is a sluggish deep burrower, which remains stationary in the sediment with its siphons protruding towards the surface. The oblique shell ornament of Goniomya, comprising symmetrical ribs, is present among a variety of Late Palaeozoic and Mesozoic bivalves and was probably a shell reinforcement (e.g. Checa & Jimnez-Jimnez 2003)., Published as part of Hryniewicz, Krzysztof, Little, Crispin T. Fossil bivalves of the family Pholadomyidae are described from Jurassic sequences of the Murihiku T errane of New Zealand (Murihiku Supergroup) and New Caledonia (Baie de St‐Vincent Group). Four new species and two new subgenera are erected: Pholadomya (Pholadomya) oretiensis n. sp., Hettangian‐Sinemurian (Aratauran local stage); Pholadomya (P.) beaumontensis n. sp., probably Aalenian‐Callovian (Temaikan); Pholadomya (Kanakimya) uitoe n. subgen. et sp., Aalenian‐Callovian (Temaikan); and Pholadomya (Moewakamya) hudsoni n. subgen. et sp., Oxfordian (Heterian). An isolated specimen from the type Temaikan sequence (c. Aalenian), Kawhia Harbour, does not warrant formal naming but is closely related to P. oretiensis. Neither of the new subgenera is yet recognised elsewhere but an exhaustive review of relations within this large genus is long overdue. P. oretiensis and P. teaumontensis show some similarities with contemporary English species, but this is not thought to imply any particularly close evol...

The Australian Permian bivalves Megadesmus, Astartila, Pyramtis, and Myonia have previously been grouped in either the Family Pachydomidae (Fischer, 1887) or the Family Edmondiidae (King, 1850). Because of similarities in their musculature (in addition to those in dentition, micro‐ornament, and to some extent, shape) they can now be included in the same family as the deep‐burrowing bivalve Vacunella (previously Chaenomya). Vacunella is closely related to the living genus Pholadomya which has existed at least since the Mesozoic, and the two can be placed in the same family — Pholadomyidae (Fleming, 1828). Because of these similarities between Pholadomya, Vacunella, and the “Pachydomidae” it seems likely that the middle and upper Palaeozoic edmondioid bivalves gave rise to the Mesozoic and Cainozoic pholadomyoids, and that these two groups together constitute a major division of the Class Bivalvia — a division that may have been relatively distinct since Ordovician time.
