The official publication of the American Society of Animal Science, the 'Journal of Animal Science,' was first published in Feb 1942 after the society, then known as the American Society of Animal Production, deemed it necessary to have an avenue for publishing scientific papers. After much discussion and planning, abstracts of the papers read during the society's 1941 meeting were published in the first issue of the journal. The journal has prospered not only in subscription, but also in the bulk and diversity of research papers published in the past 50 years.

Glass-ionomer—silver cermet cement has been used extensively for restorations in children and adolescents since 1984. This work describes handling characteristics, clinical uses, and limitations of the material and documents representative examples up to 6 years after placement in the mouth. The article presents a study on the effects of bonding agents on the bond strength between glass ionomer cement and composite resin. Cylinders of pairs of the materials were subjected to a tensile-type stress for determining the bond strength. The glass ionomer cements that were used in the study include, GC Lining Cement and Fuji lonomer II from GC International Corp. It was found that the lowest viscosity bonding agent gave the best bond strength. It was also found that a thick film was formed by the high viscosity bonding agent. It is stated that it was not possible to precisely determine the effect of the chemical formulations of the bonding agents due to the design of the experiment.

The article discusses dental restoration of a carious primary maxillary second molar with glass ionomer-silver cermet cement as a long-term restorative material. It also describes some other uses of the material in primary and young permanent teeth. The glass ionomer-silver cermet cement has been used in situations including for restoration of lingual surfaces, for cementing stainless steel crown restorations, in repairs of stainless steel crown occlusal surface, and to replace silver amalgam restorations in primary teeth that are fractured or require replacement. Results showed that the overall experience with this cement in young patients were favorable. However, the longevity of glass ionomer-silver cerment cement restorations in the mouth is stated to be still uncertain.

The article focuses on the possible presence of hazards in the materials used in the field of dentistry. Accordingly, barium sulfate, zinc oxide and fluoride salts are just among those several common constituents of the alginate impression material and are considered moderately toxic or worse. It is noted that the formation of dust in those materials in the field was made through manually shaking the glass container followed by positioning it the soonest possible in the beam of light. The author stresses that the production of dust has been influenced by common factors such as the shaking mode and energy.

This study compared castability values in the Whitlock test with those obtained from a new castability monitor based on a dental restoration. Five metal ceramic casting alloys were induction cast with both a carbon-containing and a noncarbon phosphate-bonded casting investment to assess the reliability of the Whitlock mesh test in predicting alloy castability. Alloy performance in the Whitlock test did not parallel that of the replica coping test for all alloy-investment pairs, as would be anticipated for a reliable monitor of castability. In addition, the variability of the Whitlock castability values for some alloys was sufficient to question the test's usefulness in refining the casting process with a specific alloy. The effects of trituration time on the creep of eight commercial dental amalgams was determined. The data show that trituration time does influence the creep of amalgam, but its magnitude varies from one alloy to another. The condensing procedure also influences creep. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A two-body, wear-testing method was developed and the test results were used for comparing and ranking the rate of wear for an amalgam, an experimental composite resin, and a commercial composite resin. The ranking of wear found by this method was the same as that shown by clinical research for the rate of wear of amalgam and commercial composite resin. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Analysis of certain components of plaque grown at margins of restorations shows variation in composition with time. Stability occurs within one year in vivo. Comparable plaque grows on all materials tested with the exception of silicates. Fluorides within silicates apparently cause the difference in this plaque composition. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A model was constructed to simulate a one surface cavity preparation. Dentin disks of varying thickness served as the pulpal floor of the model. The deflection of the cavity floor was monitored when forces of the type used in condensing amalgam and gold foil restorations were applied. Deflection of the dentin occurred under this type of loading. The amount depended on the magnitude of the load and thickness of the dentin. A cement base reduced the deflection of the cavity floor. The article presents a speech by Ralph W. Phillips, of the Indiana University School of Dentistry (IADR), presented at a general session of the International Association for Dental Research, March 16, 1967, in which he discusses problems facing dental research, the age distribution of dental researchers, and of the need for IADR to actively recruit and place dental researchers.

The article focuses on research into dental adhesive restorative materials. It comments on the Bio-Materials Advisory Committee and its research into dental adhesives that would prevent microleakage of dental repairs. It talks about research into the behavior of molecules on tooth surface structures and the need for large specimens of pure collagen or hydroxyapatite. It mentions research into resins and epoxies and their applicability into dental work.

The article looks at the effects of residual monomer within restorative dental resins. The mechanical properties of dental resins are discussed, including elasticity, hardness, and yield strength. Attempts to decrease the residual monomer have resulted in an improvement of the properties of resins and less irritation of the pulp and soft tissue.

The article looks at a study which examined the electrical resistance of teeth with dental amalgams produced with silver-tin alloys. The approximated resistivity of several alloys made with different percentages of silver and tin are compared. The author also discusses the effects of mercury content on teeth.

This article discusses the role of powder particle size and the powder-liquid ratio in zinc oxide-eugenol cements. The authors found that zinc oxide powder particle sizes played a significant role in determining how quickly these cements set. The role of additives included in the testing of these resins to ensure effective setting times is also emphasized.
