Abstract

Due to the exponential growth of the state space of coupled quantum systems it is not possible, in general, to numerically store the state of a very large number of quantum systems within a classical computer. We demonstrate a method for modelling the dynamical behaviour of measurable quantities for very large numbers of interacting quantum systems. Our approach makes use of a symbolic non-commutative algebra engine that we have recently developed in conjunction with the well-known Ehrenfest theorem. Here we show the possibility of determining the dynamics of experimentally observable quantities, without approximation, for very large numbers of interacting harmonic oscillators. Our analysis removes a large number of significant constraints present in previous analysis of this example system (such as having no entanglement in the initial state). This method will be of value in simulating the operation of large quantum machines, emergent behaviour in quantum systems, open quantum systems and quantum chemistry to name but a few., Comment: Draft, comments welcome. 4 pages, 2 figures

Abstract

Significant variation exists in the outcomes used in cancer cachexia trials, including measures of body composition, which are often selected as primary or secondary endpoints. To date, there has been no review of the most commonly selected measures or their potential sensitivity to detect changes resulting from the interventions being examined. The aim of this systematic review is to assess the frequency and diversity of body composition measures that have been used in cancer cachexia trials. MEDLINE, Embase and Cochrane Library databases were systematically searched between January 1990 and June 2021. Eligible trials examined adults (≥18 years) who had received an intervention aiming to treat or attenuate the effects of cancer cachexia for >14 days. Trials were also of a prospective controlled design and included body weight or at least one anthropometric, bioelectrical or radiological endpoint pertaining to body composition, irrespective of the modality of intervention (e.g., pharmacological, nutritional, physical exercise and behavioural) or comparator. Trials with a sample size of <40 patients were excluded. Data extraction used Covidence software, and reporting followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidance. This review was prospectively registered (PROSPERO: CRD42022276710). A total of 84 clinical trials, comprising 13 016 patients, were eligible for inclusion. Non-small-cell lung cancer and pancreatic cancer were studied most frequently. The majority of trial interventions were pharmacological (52%) or nutritional (34%) in nature. The most frequently reported endpoints were assessments of body weight (68 trials, n = 11 561) followed by bioimpedance analysis (BIA)-based estimates (23 trials, n = 3140). Sixteen trials (n = 3052) included dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA)-based endpoints, and computed tomography (CT) body composition was included in eight trials (n = 841). Abstract

The production of a large-scale monitoring system for a high-speed network leads to a number of challenges. These challenges are not purely techinical but also socio-political and legal. The number of stakeholders in a such a monitoring activity is large including the network operators, the users, the equipment manufacturers and of course the monitoring researchers. The MASTS project (Measurement at All Scales in Time and Space) was created to instrument the high-speed JANET Lightpath network, and has been extended to incorporate other paths supported by JANET(UK). Challenges the project has faced have included: simple access to the network; legal issues involved in the storage and dissemination of the captured information, which may be personal; the volume of data captured and the rate at which this data appears at store. To this end the MASTS system will have established four monitoring points each capturing packets on a high speed link. Traffic header data will be continuously collected, anonymised, indexed, stored and made available to the research community. A legal framework for the capture and storage of network measurement data has been developed which allows the anonymised IP traces to be used for research pur poses., Comment: 21 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

We are no less directly acquainted with the temporal structure of the world than with its spatial structure. We hear one word succeeding another; feel two taps as simultaneous; or see the glow of a firework persisting, before it finally fizzles and fades. However, time is special, for we not only experience temporal properties; experience itself is structured in time. Part One articulates a natural framework for thinking about experience in time. I claim (i) that experience in its experiential aspect has a realistically conceived temporal structure; (ii) that our judgements about that structure always go via judgements about the temporal structure of the apparent objects of perception; and (iii) that a subject undergoing perceptual experience of a given experiential kind is always in a position to know that they are undergoing experience of that kind simply in virtue of so undergoing. On this basis, I argue that the temporal structure of experience cannot systematically come apart from the temporal structure of its objects. Part Two treats four puzzles relating to our experience of time. The first is Dennett’s notorious discussion of masking and apparent motion phenomena. The second is the traditional debate regarding the very possibility of perceiving temporal properties. The third is Fara’s recent contention that standard explanations of our experience of slow changes preclude us from perceiving constant motion. A common reaction to these three puzzles is to reject some element of the naïve picture of temporal experience developed in Part One. I resolve them instead by showing how each arises from mistakenly thinking that experience is homoeomerous down to very short durations or instants. That is, thinking that we can analyse experience into a series of independent short slices, and explain the nature of the stream of consciousness in terms of those slices. The final chapter discusses a fourth puzzle about visual motion perception which I diagnose as driven by a rather different, but equally misguided way of thinking about vision.

20. A bit of a buzz : a study of the poetry of Paul Muldoon

Abstract

After a cautionary introduction in which I acknowledge Muldoon's uneasy relationship with the critical establishment, I begin the study proper by discussing his fascination with language, reading him against the example of Joyce and exploring matters of representation. I suggest the visceral, neo-Gothic and carnivalesque extremes of his work, his complication of realist models of poetry and his aspiration towards a secular epiphany. The second chapter confronts various readings of Muldoon's sexual poetic, arguing against the interpretation of him as a misogynist by highlighting the stresses his style places upon traditional patterns of gender identity and behaviour. I claim that Muldoon over-strains inherited images of masculinity, dismantles the mechanisms of male lyricism, elides gender différance and ultimately 'domesticates' his own itinerant style. My third chapter explores Muldoon's affinity for Byron, indicating several points of congruence: their informal formality, their flexible approach to rhyme and narrative, their "amiable cynicism", their instinctive defiance of artistic or ideological 'clubs'. I consider Byron's antagonistic relationship with the Lakers as a correlative for Muldoon's 'revival' of Pantisocracy, brining Heaney and Field Day into the equation and arguing for the restless, delinquent, anti-conservatism of the Byronic-Muldoonian manner. The second half of my study is concerned with the popular notion of Muldoon as a postmodern poet. I sketch the ambiguities of postmodernism and go on to read Muldoon's Shining Brow as a test-case in the supposed evolution of Modern into postmodern. I consider the range of technological reference in Muldoon's writing in relation to both a general culture of 'hyperreality' and a specific (Northern Irish) culture of surveillance. I analyse Muldoon's uneasy relationship with tradition, his parodic, anti-pastoral mode, his (incomplete) urge towards artistic rootlessness and contrast his poetic with that of an acknowledged postmodern, John Ashbery. Finally, I indicate the referential scope and energy of Muldoon's work, his ongoing desire to produce poetry "with a bit of a buzz to it".

21. Towards a taxonomy for reversible computation approaches

Abstract

Reversible computation is a paradigm allowing computation to proceed not only in the usual, forward direction, but also backwards. Reversible computation has been studied in a variety of models, including sequential and concurrent programming languages, automata, process calculi, Turing machines, circuits, Petri nets, event structures, term rewriting, quantum computing, and others. Also, it has found applications in areas as different as low-power computing, debugging, simulation, robotics, database design, and biochemical modeling. Thus, while the broad idea of reversible computation is the same in all the areas, it has been interpreted and adapted to fit the various settings. The existing notions of reversible computation however have never been compared and categorized in detail. This work aims at being a first stepping stone towards a taxonomy of the approaches that co-exist under the term re- versible computation. We hope that such a work will shed light on the relation among the various approaches.

Abstract

A means of unifying some semiclassical models of computational chemistry is presented; these include quantized Hamiltonian dynamics, quantal cumulant dynamics, and semiclassical Moyal dynamics (SMD). A general method for creating the infinite hierarchy of operator dynamics in the Heisenberg picture is derived together with a general method for truncation (or closure) of that series, and in addition, we provide a simple link to the phase space methods of SMD. Operator equations of arbitrary order may be created readily, avoiding the tedious algebra identified previously. Truncation is based on a simple recurrence formula which is related to, but avoids the more complex contractions of, Wick's theorem. This generalized method is validated against a number of trial problems considered using the previous methods. We also touch on some of the limitations involved using such methods, noting, in particular, that any truncation will lead to a state which is in some sense unphysical. Finally, we briefly introduce our quantum algebra package QuantAL which provides an automated method for the generation of the required equation set, the initial conditions for all variables from any start, and all the higher order approximations necessary for truncation of the series, at essentially arbitrary order.
