Abstract

Cationic‐shell core‐crosslinked micelles (CCM−C) with rhodium nanoparticles (RhNPs) anchored to core‐linked triphenylphosphine oxide (TPPO) ligands were synthesized by a facile one‐pot approach by the reduction of [Rh(COD)(μ‐Cl)]2/toluene in the presence of an aqueous TPPO@CCM−C latex. The resulting RhNP‐TPPO@CCM−C latex showed to be performant for the aqueous biphasic hydrogenation of styrene with an average corrected turnover frequency (cTOF) up to 23600 h−1 based on the RhNP surface atoms. The catalyst system also proved reusable in multiple catalytic runs without any visible RhNP loss during the recycling process as well as applicable to the hydrogenation of other selected alkenes, alkynes and carbonyl substrates (average cTOF of 1000–3200 h−1), thus demonstrating a high versatility. 14. Ruthenium Nanoparticles Stabilized with Methoxy-Functionalized Ionic Liquids:Synthesis and Structure–Performance Relations in Styrene Hydrogenation

Abstract

A series of ruthenium nanoparticles (RuNPs) were synthesized by the organometallic approach in different functionalized imidazolium ionic liquids (FILs). Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) showed well-dispersed and narrow-sized RuNPs ranging from 1.3 to 2.2 nm, depending on the IL functionalization. Thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) allowed the interaction between the RuNPs and the ILs to be studied. The RuNPs stabilized by methoxy-based FILs (MEM and MME) displayed a good balance between catalytic activity and stability when evaluated in the hydrogenation of styrene (S) under mild reaction conditions. Moreover, the catalysts showed total selectivity towards ethylbenzene (EB) under milder reaction conditions (5 bar, 30 °C) than reported in the literature for other RuNP catalysts.

Abstract

International audience; The introduction of iron in bimetallic Ni-Fe nanoparticles allows an efficient modulation of the hydrogenating properties of nickel. Catalysts based on Ni-Fe nanoparticles thus perform the selective hydrogenation of oxygenor nitrogen-containing functions of organic molecules containing unsaturated carbon-carbon bonds or aromatic cycles. But rationalizing their catalytic properties requires a deep knowledge in the localization of the two metals within the nanoparticles, and the identification of synthesis routes leading to Ni-Fe particles of controlled size and composition.

Abstract

International audience; RuNi nanoparticles (NP) were prepared by decomposition of [Ru(η4-C8H12)(η6-C8H10)] and [Ni(η4-C8H12)2] by H2 in the presence of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) at 85 °C using several Ru/Ni ratios. The nanoparticles display a segregated structure in which Ni is on the surface, as ascertained by wide angle X-ray scattering (WAXS). The catalytic activity in the selective hydrogenation of furfural of these RuNi NP was correlated with the Ru content. High selectivity towards the partially hydrogenated product 2-(hydroxymethyl)furan (HF) was found when carrying out the reaction in tetrahydrofuran (THF). A different scenario was found when using a protic polar solvent, 1-propanol. Catalysts displaying Ru on the surface were able to hydrogenate the heteroaromatic ring, while those with Ni on the surface were highly selective towards the partially hydrogenated product. In addition, Ru surfaces were prone to catalyse the acetalization reaction in the presence of the alcoholic solvent, while the addition of Ni supressed this reactivity. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations performed on hydrogenated Ru nanoparticles (Ru55H70) show differences in the adsorption energies of several reagents, products, reaction intermediates, and solvents onto the Ru NP surface, which are in line with the experimental catalytic results.

Abstract

International audience; At the LCC-Toulouse-France, the Engineering of Metal Nanoparticles team develops efficient tools for the synthesis of finely controlled metal nanostructures in solution by applying a molecular chemistry approach based on the decomposition of organometallic complexes in the presence of a stabilizer (polymer, ligand, ionic liquid). This approach enables to prepare ultra-small monometallic or bimetallic (alloy, core-shell or surface-decorated) nanoparticles as well as supported nanoparticles (i.e. on silica or carbon supports). As described herein we are also developing hybrid nanomaterials consisted in the association of metal transition complexes to metal nanoparticles in order to explore their physicochemical properties.
