Abstract

The synthesis of yttria‐stabilized zirconia nanoparticles with a fine control on the chemical composition and the distribution of yttrium cations is of major interest to master the mechanical, optical or ionic conduction properties of the final material. However, a fine control of this chemical homogeneity within the particles, especially above 5 mol.% of yttria (Y2O3), is challenging with conventional synthesis routes. In the present study, for the first time the interest of using supercritical sol–gel like synthesis is demonstrated for the continuous production in a single step of high quality zirconia (ZrO2) nanocrystals of 7 nm stabilized with Y2O3 without post‐treatment. Three compositions are investigated, i.e., 1.5, 3, and 8 mol.% of Y2O3 and in‐depth physico‐ chemical characterizations such as X‐ray diffraction, total X‐ray scattering, High‐resolution electron microscopy, Raman and X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy are performed to asses and thus prove the successful synthesis of these different compositions while keeping a good chemical homogeneity. 13. Fluoride-assisted detection of glutathione by surface Ce3+/Ce4+ engineered nanoceria.

Abstract

Nanoceria has evolved as a promising nanomaterial due to its unique enzyme-like properties, including excellent oxidase mimetic activity, which significantly increases in the presence of fluoride ions. However, this significant increase in oxidase activity has never been utilised as a signal enhancer for the detection of biological analytes partly because of the lack of understanding of the mechanism involved in this process. In this study, we show that the surface oxidation state of cerium ions plays a very crucial role in different enzymatic activities, especially the oxidase mimetic activity by engineering nanoceria with three different surface Ce4+/Ce3+ compositions. Using DFT calculations combined with Bader charge analysis, it is demonstrated that stoichiometric ceria registers a higher oxidase mimetic activity than oxygen-deficient ceria with a low Ce4+/Ce3+ ratio due to a higher charge transfer from a substrate, 3,3′,5,5′ tetramethylbenzidine (TMB), to the ceria surface. We also show that the fluoride ions can significantly increase the charge transfer from the TMB surface to ceria irrespective of the surface Ce4+/Ce3+ ratio. Using this knowledge, we first compare the fluoride sensing properties of nanoceria with high Ce4+ and mixed Ce4+/Ce3+ oxidation states and further demonstrate that the linear detection range of fluoride ions can be extended to 1–10 ppm for nanoceria with mixed oxidation states. Then, we also demonstrate an assay for fluoride assisted detection of glutathione, an antioxidant with elevated levels during cancer, using nanoceria with a high surface Ce4+/Ce3+ ratio. The addition of fluoride ions in this assay allows the detection of glutathione in the linear range of 2.5–50 ppm with a limit of detection (LOD) of 3.8 ppm. These studies not only underpin the role of the surface Ce4+/Ce3+ ratio in tuning the fluoride assisted boost in the oxidase mimetic activity of nanoceria but also its strategic application in designing better colourimetric assays. Abstract

International audience; This chapter describes one area of applications where supercritical CO2 (scCO2) is effectively used as a solvent. CO2-based solvents can be used to perform physical or chemical transformations, the two main routes introduced in this chapter to prepare advanced materials. For processes based on physical transformations, CO2 can be used as a solvent, antisolvent or as a solute for the controlled design of organic particles. Switching from physical to chemical transformations gives access to the design of advanced inorganic materials, such as nanopowders or films using supercritical CO2-based solvent systems. The choice of the reactor technology allows working with homogeneous (continuous reactor) or heterogeneous nucleation (cold wall reactor). With a continuous reactor, it is possible to synthesise metal or metal oxide nanoparticles. Changing to a cold wall reactor allows for the deposition of thin films (metals or metal oxides) on different kinds of substrates, i.e. the Supercritical Fluid Chemical Deposition (SFCD) process forming continuous, conformal and dense coatings. The SFCD technology has also been used for the deposition of heterostructures on other supports, such as silica beads, carbon nanotubes, carbon aerogels, etc., in hot-walled batch reactors. A more recent application of CO2-based solvents is in the field of materials recycling. scCO2 is very interesting as it can easily contribute to improving processes, e.g. in terms of metal leaching, by shortening their duration. It can also be included in current recycling processes as a supplementary step, as shown for lithium ion battery electrolyte extraction or printed circuit board delamination.

Abstract

The production of BaTi1-yZryO3 (0 ≤ y ≤ 1, BTZ) nanocrystals is known to be challenging due the low reactivity of zirconium precursors. Here we have successfully studied the impact of zirconium on the BTZ particle formation in sub- and supercritical fluid conditions along the entire solid solution. In situ synchrotron wide angle X-ray scattering (WAXS) analyses were conducted in batch at 150 and 400 °C to follow, in real time, the BTZ crystallite synthesis. This approach revealed the complexity behind the nucleation and growth mechanisms of ABO3 nanocrystals, especially toward high zirconium content (more than 50 atomic %). This type of substitution induces, among other things, microstrain within the structure. Moreover, for the cases of BaTi0.4Zr0.6O3 and BaTi0.2Zr0.8O3, the experiments showed the apparition of two crystallite size populations. In the BaTi0.4Zr0.6O3 case, at 400 °C, these two size populations merged into a single one after at least 8 min; in contrast to what was observed for the case of BaTi0.2Zr0.8O3. This is a manifestation of how with increasing the zirconium content the particles become more refractory and in these cases the temperature is not high enough to enable their ripening. It is important to note that this behavior was not observed for particles produced at 400 °C using a flow synthesis method, with a residence time of only 50 s. There, the particles presented a single size population close to the one obtained after 8 min in batch. This thus suggests that for batch syntheses a longer time is required to achieve a similar product quality to the one obtained with a flow process. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

This paper addresses for the first time two of the main challenges in the field of electroceramics. The first one is the development of a continuous, fast and reliable synthesis method for producing sub-20 nm barium titanate zirconate (BaTi1-yZryO3 with 0 ≤ y ≤ 1-BTZ) nanocrystals over the whole solid solution, while keeping a narrow size distribution. The second one concerns the processing of dense and nanostructured lead free electroceramics highlighting the size effect on the crossover from ferroelectric to relaxor, in the case of grains smaller than 100 nm. This was achieved combining the supercritical fluid technology to produce in continuous and at moderate temperature (400 °C) BTZ nanocrystals, with Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS) to prevent grain growth during the sintering. Abstract

Abstract: High quality barium strontium titanate (Ba x Sr1− x TiO3 with 0≤ x ≤1–BST) nanoparticles can be synthesized using supercritical fluids technology. Well crystallized particles of 20nm with a narrow size distribution were produced in a single step. The reaction is achieved at relatively low temperature (T <400°C) and in tens of seconds. The combination of in situ synchrotron wide angle X-ray scattering (WAXS) and ex situ analyses in the form of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM) leads to an understanding of the influence of the substitution of barium cations with strontium ones on the BST nanoparticle growth. A correlation between particle size, density of –OH groups at the surface of the particles and BST composition is exhibited; the higher the –OH density and the lower the strontium concentration, the larger the particles. This confirms that the formation of BST nanoparticles in supercritical fluids is governed by a sol–gel mechanism. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Metal‐insulator‐metal (MIM) capacitors with Ba0.6Sr0.4TiO3 (BST) thin films as insulating layers are fabricated using a novel, fast, and low‐cost method. On one hand, the process lies in the swift, continuous, and scalable synthesis of BST nanoparticles using the supercritical fluid technology and, on the other hand, the nonpyrolytic spray coating of thin films using colloidal nanocrystals as ink. The authors focus on the deposition process of thin and uniform layer. A dispersed colloidal suspension based on BST nanoparticles is deposited on a hot copper substrate. A 200 nm thick dielectric film is successfully obtained. Electrical characterizations of Cu/BST/Al MIM structure demonstrate a state‐of‐the‐art capacitance density almost reaching 1 µF cm−2 within an operating voltage range of ±1 V. Moreover, an annealing process of the dielectric layer and the final MIM capacitor at 90 °C during 15 h brings a significant decrease of the leakage current by three decades from mA cm−2 to µA cm−2. Spray coating of colloidal suspensions based on Ba0.6Sr0.4TiO3(BST) nanoparticles enables the deposition of uniform thin films (200 ± 50 nm). Electrical characterizations of these films demonstrate state‐of‐the‐art capacitance density (0.9 µF cm−2). Abstract

In a context where the electronic is at the center of our society, theproduction of more compact and multifunctional devices focuses the research efforts.To answer to the expectations, one option is to improve the volume efficiency ofpassive components such as capacitors using dielectric nanoparticles such asBaTiO3. First, the objective is to optimize the synthesis of BaTiO3 nanoparticles andunderstand their formation in supercritical fluids. To do this, we combinedconventional ex situ analyses such as X-ray diffraction, electronic microscopy,infrared and Raman spectroscopies with in situ synchrotron wide angle X-rayscattering analyses. This was then transferred to the development of Ba1-xSrxTiO3 (0≤ x ≤ 1) and BaTi1-yZryO3 (0 ≤ y ≤ 1) solid solutions. Once the syntheses wereoptimized, using spark plasma sintering (SPS), we processed the powders intodense and nanostructured ceramics keeping the starting particles size (20 nm), tostudy the materials intrinsic properties at the nanoscale. Finally, knowing thenanoparticles properties, we could start to develop hybrid dielectric materials forflexible electronics., Dans un contexte où l’électronique est au centre de notre société, la productiond’appareils de plus en plus compacts et multifonctionnels concentre les efforts en rechercheet développement. Pour répondre à cette attente, une des options est d’augmenter lerendement volumique des composants passifs tels que les condensateurs, en se basant surl’utilisation de nanoparticules diélectriques du type BaTiO3. Dans un premier temps,l’objectif est d’optimiser la synthèse des nanoparticules de BaTiO3 et de comprendre leursmécanismes de formation en milieux fluides supercritiques. Pour ce faire nous avonscombiné des méthodes d’analyses ex situ telles que la microscopie électronique, ladiffraction des rayons X, et les spectroscopies Raman ou infra rouge à des mesures in situsynchrotron de diffraction des rayons X aux grands angles. L’étude a par la suite ététransposé à l’élaboration de la totalité des solutions solidesBa1-xSrxTiO3 (0 ≤ x ≤ 1) et BaTi1-yZryO3 (0 ≤ y ≤ 1). Une fois les synthèses optimisées, l’utilisation du spark plasma sintering(SPS) nous a permis de mettre en oeuvre des céramiques denses et nanostructurées,préservant la taille initiale des particules (20 nm), ceci afin d’étudier les propriétésintrinsèques des matériaux à l’échelle nanoscopique. Enfin, connaissant les propriétés debase de ces nanomatériaux, nous avons pu commencer à développer des matériauxhybrides diélectriques pour l’électronique flexible.
