The current standard model of cosmology successfully describes a variety of measurements, but the nature of its main ingredients, dark matter and dark energy, remains unknown. Euclid is a medium-class mission in the Cosmic Vision 2015-2025 programme of the European Space Agency (ESA) that will provide high-resolution optical imaging, as well as near-infrared imaging and spectroscopy, over about 14,000 deg^2 of extragalactic sky. In addition to accurate weak lensing and clustering measurements that probe structure formation over half of the age of the Universe, its primary probes for cosmology, these exquisite data will enable a wide range of science. This paper provides a high-level overview of the mission, summarising the survey characteristics, the various data-processing steps, and data products. This paper presents the specification, design, and development of the Visible Camera (VIS) on the ESA Euclid mission. VIS is a large optical-band imager with a field of view of 0.54 deg^2 sampled at 0.1" with an array of 609 Megapixels and spatial resolution of 0.18". It will be used to survey approximately 14,000 deg^2 of extragalactic sky to measure the distortion of galaxies in the redshift range z=0.1-1.5 resulting from weak gravitational lensing, one of the two principal cosmology probes of Euclid. With photometric redshifts, the distribution of dark matter can be mapped in three dimensions, and, from how this has changed with look-back time, the nature of dark energy and theories of gravity can be constrained. The entire VIS focal plane will be transmitted to provide the largest images of the Universe from space to date, reaching m_AB>24.5 with S/N >10 in a single broad I_E~(r+i+z) band over a six year survey. The particularly challenging aspects of the instrument are the control and calibration of observational biases, which lead to stringent performance requirements and calibration regimes. With its combination of spatial resolution, calibration knowledge, depth, and area covering most of the extra-Galactic sky, VIS will also provide a legacy data set for many other fields. This paper discusses the rationale behind the VIS concept and describes the instrument design and development before reporting the pre-launch performance derived from ground calibrations and brief results from the in-orbit commissioning. VIS should reach fainter than m_AB=25 with S/N>10 for galaxies of full-width half-maximum of 0.3" in a 1.3" diameter aperture over the Wide Survey, and m_AB>26.4 for a Deep Survey that will cover more than 50 deg^2. Chronic conditions associated with aging have proven difficult to prevent or treat. Senescence is a cell fate defined by loss of proliferative capacity and the development of a pro-inflammatory senescence-associated secretory phenotype comprised of cytokines/chemokines, proteases, and other factors that promotes age-related diseases. Specifically, an increase in senescent peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs), including T cells, is associated with conditions like frailty, rheumatoid arthritis, and bone loss. However, it is unknown if the percentage of senescent PBMCs associated with age-associated orthopedic decline could be used for potential diagnostic or prognostic use in orthopedics. Here, we report senescent cell detection using the fluorescent compound C12FDG to quantify PBMCs senescence across a large cohort of healthy and osteoarthritic patients. There is an increase in the percent of circulating C12FDG+ PBMCs that is commensurate with increases in age and senescence-related serum biomarkers. Interestingly, C12FDG+ PBMCs and T cells also were found to be elevated in patients with mild to moderate osteoarthritis, a progressive joint disease that is strongly associated with inflammation. The percent of C12FDG+ PBMCs and age-related serum biomarkers were decreased in a small subgroup of study participants taking the senolytic drug fisetin. These results demonstrate quantifiable measurements in a large group of participants that could create a composite score of healthy aging sensitive enough to detect changes following senolytic therapy and may predict age-related orthopedic decline. Detection of peripheral senescence in PBMCs and subsets using C12FDG may be clinically useful for quantifying cellular senescence and determining how and if it plays a pathological role in osteoarthritic progression.

Hypertensive heart disease (HHD) is the most common differential diagnosis that mimics the LVH of HCM. The AGATA tracking detector array represents a significant improvement over previous Compton suppressed arrays. The construction of AGATA led to numerous technological breakthroughs in order to meet the requirements and the challenges of building a mobile detector across Europe. This paper focuses on the design and implementation of the data acquisition system responsible of the readout and control of the germanium detectors of AGATA. Our system is highly versatile, capable of instrumenting AGATA and seamlessly adapting it to various configurations with a wide range of ancillary detectors and/or spectrometers. It consists of three main components: an autonomous and independent infrastructure, a dedicated application core ensuring overall consistency, and a high--performance software package providing a fully integrated data flow management including the setting-up, the supervision and the slow control of the instrument. In this paper, we present a comprehensive analysis of the system's design and performance, particularly under high-counting rate conditions.

Most observations of the solar corona beyond 2 Rs consist of broadband visible light imagery from coronagraphs. The associated diagnostics mainly consist of kinematics and derivations of the electron number density. While the measurement of the properties of emission lines can provide crucial additional diagnostics of the coronal plasma (temperatures, velocities, abundances, etc.), these observations are comparatively rare. In visible wavelengths, observations at these heights are limited to total eclipses. In the VUV range, very few additional observations have been achieved since the pioneering results of UVCS. One of the objectives of the Full Sun Imager (FSI) channel of the EUI telescope on board the Solar Orbiter mission has been to provide very wide field-of-view EUV diagnostics of the morphology and dynamics of the solar atmosphere in temperature regimes that are typical of the lower transition region and of the corona. FSI carries out observations in two narrowbands of the EUV spectrum centered on 17.4 nm and 30.4 nm that are dominated, respectively, by lines of Fe IX/X (formed in the corona around 1 MK) and by the resonance line of He II (formed around 80 kK in the lower transition region). Unlike previous EUV imagers, FSI includes a moveable occulting disk that can be inserted in the optical path to reduce the amount of instrumental stray light to a minimum. FSI detects signals at 17.4 nm up to the edge of its FOV (7~Rs), which is about twice further than was previously possible. Comparisons with observations by the LASCO and Metis coronagraphs confirm the presence of morphological similarities and differences between the broadband visible light and EUV emissions, as documented on the basis of prior eclipse and space-based observations. The very-wide-field observations of FSI are paving the way for future dedicated instruments.

12. Forearc crustal faults as tsunami sources in the upper plate of the Lesser Antilles subduction zone: the case study of the Morne Piton fault system

In this study, alternatively to the megathrust, we identify upper-plate normal faults orthogonal to the trench as a possible tsunami source along the Lesser Antilles subduction zone. The Morne Piton fault system is such a trench-perpendicular upper crustal fault at the latitude of Guadeloupe. By means of seismic reflection, high-resolution bathymetry, remotely operated vehicle (ROV) imaging and dating, we reassess the slip rate of the Morne Piton fault since 7 Ma, i.e., its inception, and quantify an average rate of 0.25 mm yr−1 since ca. 1.2 Ma. This result divides by two previous estimations, increases the earthquake time recurrence and lowers the associated hazard. The ROV dive revealed a metric scarp with striae at the toe of the Morne Piton fault system, suggesting a recent fault rupture. We estimate a fault rupture area of ∼ 450–675 km2 and then a magnitude range for a maximum seismic event around Mw 6.5 ± 0.5, making this fault potentially tsunamigenic as the nearby Les Saintes fault responsible for a tsunami following the 2004 Mw 6.3 earthquake. Consequently, we simulate a multi-segment tsunami model representative of a worst-case scenario if all the identified Morne Piton fault segments ruptured together. Our model provides clues for the potential impact of local tsunamis on the surrounding coastal area as well as for local bathymetric controls on tsunami propagation. We illustrate that (i) shallow-water plateaus act as secondary sources and are responsible for a wrapping of the tsunami waves around the island of Marie-Galante; (ii) canyons indenting the shallow-water plateau slope break focus and enhance the wave height in front of the most touristic and populated town of the island; and (iii) the resonance phenomenon is observed within the Les Saintes archipelago, showing that the waves' frequency content is able to perturb the sea level for many hours after the seismic rupture.

13. Designing simulation-based curriculum content for emergency medicine residents in France: a Delphi method

Abstract Background The value of simulation in emergency medicine is indisputable because it allows training and acquisition of many technical and non-technical skills (TS and NTS). In France, there are no curriculum regarding the use of simulation as a teaching tool during emergency medicine residency. The aim of this study was to design the content of a national simulation-based curriculum for emergency medicine residency programs. Methods The Delphi method was conducted between March and June 2022. The questionnaire was divided into three sections: TS, NTS and clinical situations as starting points (SSPs). A panel of emergency physicians’ experts on simulation education was established. An online survey was conducted in which they were asked to score, on a four-point Likert scale, the suitability of skills and SSPs to be taught through simulation courses during the emergency medicine residency. The questionnaire was revised between each round following comments or suggestions for additional items from the experts. Results Sixty-six experts completed the Delphi process. The initial questionnaire included 64 TS, 37 NTS and 103 SSPs. The experts’ comments led to the addition of 12 TS, 24 NTS and 6 SSPs. Consensus was obtained after three rounds. The experts selected 24 TS and 20 NTS to be taught as a priority through simulation during the emergency medicine residency, and 15 SSPs to be used in priority. Conclusion With a Delphi method, French experts in simulation-based emergency medicine education have selected 24 technical and 20 non-technical skills to be taught as a priority with simulation-based training to emergency medicine residents.

Neural network ensembles have been studied extensively in the context of adversarial robustness and most ensemble-based approaches remain vulnerable to adaptive attacks. In this paper, we investigate the robustness of Error-Correcting Output Codes (ECOC) ensembles through architectural improvements and ensemble diversity promotion. We perform a comprehensive robustness assessment against adaptive attacks and investigate the relationship between ensemble diversity and robustness. Our results demonstrate the benefits of ECOC ensembles for adversarial robustness compared to regular ensembles of convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and show why the robustness of previous implementations is limited. We also propose an adversarial training method specific to ECOC ensembles that allows to further improve robustness to adaptive attacks.

Presently, gamma-ray tracking in germanium segmented detectors is realised by applying two advanced, complex algorithms. While they have already triggered an intensive R&D, they are still subject to further improvements. Making such algorithms effective, online in real time conditions and/or offline for deeper analysis, in data pipelines do require many additional software developments. This review paper gives an overview of the various bricks of software produced so far by the AGATA collaboration. It provides hints of what is foreseen for the next phases of the project up to its full configuration namely with 180 capsules in the array.
