1. Robust estimate of dynamo thresholds in the von Kármán sodium experiment using the extreme value theory

Abstract

We apply a new threshold detection method based on the extreme value theory (EVT) to the von Kármán sodium (VKS) experiment data. The VKS experiment is a successful attempt to get a dynamo magnetic field in a laboratory liquid-metal experiment. We first show that the dynamo threshold is associated with a change of the probability density function of the extreme values of the magnetic field. This method does not require the measurement of response functions from applied external perturbations and thus provides a simple threshold estimate. We apply our method to different configurations in the VKS experiment, showing that it yields a robust indication of the dynamo threshold as well as evidence of hysteretic behaviors. Moreover, for the experimental configurations in which a dynamo transition is not observed, the method provides a way to extrapolate an interval of possible threshold values.

Abstract

Recent measurements and modeling indicate that roughly half of the Pacific-origin water exiting the Chukchi Sea shelf through Barrow Canyon forms a westward-flowing current known as the Chukchi Slope Current (CSC), yet the trajectory and fate of this current is presently unknown. In this study, through the combined use of shipboard velocity data and information from five profiling floats deployed as quasi-Lagrangian particles, we delve further into the trajectory and the fate of the CSC. During the period of observation, from early September to early October 2018, the CSC progressed far to the north into the Chukchi Borderland. The northward excursion is believed to result from the current negotiating Hanna Canyon on the Chukchi slope, consistent with potential vorticity dynamics. The volume transport of the CSC, calculated using a set of shipboard transects, decreased from approximately 2 Sv (1 Sv ≡ 106 m3 s−1) to near zero over a period of 4 days. This variation can be explained by a concomitant change in the wind stress curl over the Chukchi shelf from positive to negative. After turning northward, the CSC was disrupted and four of the five floats veered offshore, with one of the floats permanently leaving the current. It is hypothesized that the observed disruption was due to an anticyclonic eddy interacting with the CSC, which has been observed previously. These results demonstrate that, at times, the CSC can get entrained into the Beaufort Gyre.

Abstract

In this paper, we present an experimental study of weakly non-linear interaction of axisymmetric internal gravity waves in a resonant cavity, supported by theoretical considerations. Contrary to plane waves in Cartesian coordinates, for which self-interacting terms are null in a linear stratifiation, the non-linear self-interaction of an internal wave mode in axisymmetric geometry is found to be efficient at producing super-harmonics, i.e. waves whose frequencies are integer multiples of the excitation frequency. Due to the range of frequencies tested in our experiments, the first harmonic frequency is below the cut-off imposed by the stratification so the lowest harmonic created can always propagate. The study shows that the super-harmonic wave field is a sum of standing waves satisfying both the dispersion relation for internal waves and the boundary conditions imposed by the cavity walls, while conserving the axisymmetry.

Abstract

To date, the influence of nonlinear stratifications and two layer stratifications on internal wave propagation has been studied for two-dimensional wave fields in a Cartesian geometry. Here, we use a novel wave generator configuration to investigate transmission in nonlinear stratifications of an axisymmetric internal wave. We demonstrate that, despite the additional geometric complexity, with associated features such as an inhomogeneous spatial distribution of the energy flux, results for plane waves can be generalised to axisymmetric wave fields. Two configurations are studied, both theoretically and experimentally. In the case of a free incident wave, a transmission maximum is found in the vicinity of evanescent frequencies. In the case of a confined incident wave, resonant effects, in the sense of constructive interference, lead to enhanced transmission rates from an upper layer to a layer below. We consider the oceanographic relevance of these results by applying them to an example oceanic stratification, finding that there can be real-world implications., ONR (Grant N000141612450)

Abstract

International audience; We present an experimental study of resonant generation of superharmonic internal waves as a result of interaction between horizontally propagating vertical internal wave modes m and n at frequency ω 0 in a uniformly stratified finite-depth fluid. Thorpe [J. Fluid Mech. 24, 737 (1966)] has shown theoretically that modes m and n at frequency ω 0 and mode p = |m − n| at frequency 2ω 0 are in triadic resonance at specific values of ω 0. We demonstrate the occurrence of this triadic resonance by forcing a primary wave field of modes m and n at various ω 0 using a novel internal wave generator, and observing the spontaneous growth (or lack thereof) of the superharmonic mode p = |m − n| at frequency 2ω 0. A superharmonic wave field with a predominantly mode-p = |m − n| structure is observed over a finite range of frequency (ω 0 0.03N) around the resonant value, where N is the uniform buoyancy frequency. The spatial growth of the superharmonic wave field is then quantitatively measured, to subsequently compare with the predictions from amplitude evolution equations at resonance at various forcing amplitudes, thereby validating this model. It is furthermore shown that a large-scale spatial evolution of the wave field is more suited to describe our experiments than the slow temporal evolution approach. The paper concludes with a brief discussion of viscous effects.

8. Stability, intermittency and universal Thorpe length distribution in a laboratory turbulent stratified shear flow

Abstract

Stratified shear flows occur in many geophysical contexts, from oceanic overflows and river estuaries to wind-driven thermocline layers. We explore a turbulent wall-bounded shear flow of lighter miscible fluid into a quiescent fluid of higher density with a range of Richardson numbers$0.05\lesssim Ri\lesssim 1$. In order to find a stability parameter that allows close comparison with linear theory and with idealized experiments and numerics, we investigate different definitions of$Ri$. We find that a gradient Richardson number defined on fluid interface sections where there is no overturning at or adjacent to the maximum density gradient position provides an excellent stability parameter, which captures the Miles–Howard linear stability criterion. For small$Ri$the flow exhibits robust Kelvin–Helmholtz instability, whereas for larger$Ri$interfacial overturning is more intermittent with less frequent Kelvin–Helmholtz events and emerging Holmboe wave instability consistent with a thicker velocity layer compared with the density layer. We compute the perturbed fraction of interface as a quantitative measure of the flow intermittency, which is approximately 1 for the smallest$Ri$but decreases rapidly as$Ri$increases, consistent with linear theory. For the perturbed regions, we use the Thorpe scale to characterize the overturning properties of these flows. The probability distribution of the non-zero Thorpe length yields a universal exponential form, suggesting that much of the overturning results from increasingly intermittent Kelvin–Helmholtz instability events. The distribution of turbulent kinetic energy, conditioned on the intermittency fraction, has a similar form, suggesting an explanation for the universal scaling collapse of the Thorpe length distribution.

Abstract

To date, axisymmetric internal wave fields, which have relevance to atmospheric internal wave fields generated by storm cells and oceanic near-inertial wave fields generated by surface storms, have been experimentally realized using an oscillating sphere or torus as the source. Here, we use a novel wave generator configuration capable of exciting axisymmetric internal wave fields of arbitrary radial form to generate axisymmetric internal wave modes. After establishing the theoretical background for axisymmetric mode propagation, taking into account lateral and vertical confinement, and also accounting for the effects of weak viscosity, we experimentally generate and study modes of different order. We characterize the efficiency of the wave generator through careful measurement of the wave amplitude based upon group velocity arguments. This established, we investigate the ability of vertical confinement to induce resonance, identifying a series of experimental resonant peaks that agree well with theoretical predictions. In the vicinity of resonance, the wave fields undergo a transition to non-linear behaviour that is initiated on the central axis of the domain and proceeds to erode the wave field throughout the domain., 15 pages, 9 figures

Abstract

International audience; We present a novel characterization of mixing events associated with the propagation and overturning of internal waves studied, thanks to the simultaneous use of particle image velocimetry (PIV) and planar laser-induced fluorescence (PLIF) techniques. This combination of techniques had been developed earlier to provide an access to simultaneous velocity and density fields in two-layer stratified flows with interfacial gravity waves. Here, for the first time, we show how it is possible to implement it quantitatively in the case of a continuously stratified fluid where internal waves propagate in the bulk. We explain in details how the calibration of the PLIF data is performed by an iterative procedure, and we describe the precise spatial and temporal synchronizations of the PIV and PLIF measurements. We then validate the whole procedure by characterizing the triadic resonance instability (TRI) of an internal wave mode. Very interestingly, the combined technique is then applied to a precise measurement of the turbulent diffusivity K t associated with mixing events induced by an internal wave mode. Values up to K t = 15 mm2 s−1 are reached when TRI is present (well above the noise of our measurement, typically 1 mm2 s−1), unambiguously confirming that TRI is a potential pathway to turbulent mixing in stratified flows. This work therefore provides a step on the path to new measurements for internal waves.

Abstract

Internal gravity waves play a primary role in geophysical fluids: They contribute significantly to mixing in the ocean, and they redistribute energy and momentum in the middle atmosphere. Until recently, most studies were focused on plane wave solutions. However, these solutions are not a satisfactory description of most geophysical manifestations of internal gravity waves, and it is now recognized that internal wave beams with a confined profile are ubiquitous in the geophysical context. We discuss the reason for the ubiquity of wave beams in stratified fluids, which is related to the fact that they are solutions of the nonlinear governing equations. We focus more specifically on situations with a constant buoyancy frequency. Moreover, in light of recent experimental and analytical studies of internal gravity beams, it is timely to discuss the two main mechanisms of instability for those beams: (a) the triadic resonant instability generating two secondary wave beams and (b) the streaming instability corresponding to the spontaneous generation of a mean flow.

Abstract

The energy pathways from propagating internal waves to the scales of irreversible mixing in the ocean are not fully described. In the ocean interior, the triadic resonant instability is an intrinsic destabilization process that may enhance the energy cascade away from topographies. The present study focuses on the integrated impact of mixing processes induced by a propagative normal mode-1 over long term experiments in an idealised setup. The internal wave dynamics and the evolution of the density profile are followed using the light attenuation technique. Diagnostics of the turbulent diffusivity $K_{T}$ and background potential energy $BPE$ are provided. Mixing effects result in a partially mixed layer colocated with the region of maximum shear induced by the forcing normal mode. The maximum measured turbulent diffusivity is 250 times larger than the molecular value, showing that diapycnal mixing is largely enhanced by small scale turbulent processes. Intermittency and reversible energy transfers are discussed to bridge the gap between the present diagnostic and the larger values measured in Dossmann et al, Experiments in Fluids, 57(8), 132 (2016). The mixing efficiency $\eta$ is assessed by relating the $BPE$ growth to the linearized $KE$ input. One finds a value of $\Gamma=12-19\%$ larger than the mixing efficiency in the case of breaking interfacial wave. After several hours of forcing, the development of staircases in the density profile is observed. This mechanism has been previously observed in experiments with weak homogeneous turbulence and explained by argument. The present experiments suggest that internal wave forcing could also induce the formation of density interfaces in the ocean.

Abstract

There has been a rich interplay between laboratory experimental studies of internal waves and advancing understanding of their role in the ocean and atmosphere. In this study, we present and demonstrate the concept for a new form of laboratory internal wave generator that can excite axisymmetric wave fields of arbitrary radial structure. The construction and operation of the generator are detailed, and its capabilities are demonstrated through a pair of experiments using a Bessel function and a bourrelet (i.e., ring-shaped) configuration. The results of the experiments are compared with the predictions of an accompanying analytical model.

Abstract

Internal waves are believed to be of primary importance as they affect ocean mixing and energy transport. Several processes can lead to the breaking of internal waves and they usually involve nonlinear interactions between waves. In this work, we study experimentally the parametric subharmonic instability (PSI), which provides an efficient mechanism to transfer energy from large to smaller scales. It corresponds to the destabilization of a primary plane wave and the spontaneous emission of two secondary waves, of lower frequencies and different wave vectors. Using a time-frequency analysis, we observe the time evolution of the secondary waves, thus measuring the growth rate of the instability. In addition, a Hilbert transform method allows the measurement of the different wave vectors. We compare these measurements with theoretical predictions, and study the dependence of the instability with primary wave frequency and amplitude, revealing a possible effect of the confinement due to the finite size of the beam, on the selection of the unstable mode.

Abstract

We present the results of a laboratory experimental study of an internal wave field generated by harmonic, spatially periodic boundary forcing from above of a density stratification comprising a strongly stratified, thin upper layer sitting atop a weakly stratified, deep lower layer. In linear regimes, the energy flux associated with relatively high frequency internal waves excited in the upper layer is prevented from entering the lower layer by virtue of evanescent decay of the wave field. In the experiments, however, we find that the development of parametric subharmonic instability in the upper layer transfers energy from the forced primary wave into a pair of subharmonic daughter waves, each capable of penetrating the weakly stratified lower layer. Abstract

The influences of electro-depositing parameters on the formation of cube-textured Ni layer on Cu tape were studied. Results show that the cube texture can be obtained when the cathode potential is low enough and the pH value of electrolyte is in an appropriate range from 3 to 4. The influences of electro-depositing parameters could be explained by the geometrical selection theory. Finally, the thermal stability of texture of Ni layers was also investigated.

Abstract

International audience; La2Zr2O7 (LZO) formation of bulk powders and of films by Chemical Solution Deposition (CSD) process have been studied using propionates. The treatment involved a one step cycle in the reducing forming gas (Ar-5%H2) to be compatible with Ni-5at%W RABITS. Large amount of residual carbon was found in LZO powders formed in these conditions (10 wt %). The volume fraction of the cube texture in LZO films on Ni-5at%w RABITS was found to be a function of the speed of the gas flown above sample. This phenomenon is discussed in considering the C deposited from the carbon-containing gases emitted during the pyrolysis of the precursor. Using proper conditions (950 °C and the speed of gas of 6.8×10-2 m/s), LZO films with good surface crystallinity could be obtained on Ni-5at%W RABITS as demonstrated by X-ray diffraction, electron backscattered diffraction and RHEED. The existence of residual carbon in oxide films is a common question to films deposited by CSD processes under reducing condition.

Abstract

The phase formation kinetics of YAP (YAlO3) synthesized through the polymeric precursor method was investigated by thermal analysis, X-ray diffraction and FT-IR spectroscopy. We demonstrated that the YAP synthesis is highly dependent on the heat and mass transport during all stages of the synthesis route. In the first stages, during the preparation of amorphous precursor, “hot spots” need to be suppressed to avoid the occurrence of chemical inhomogeneities. Very high heating rates combined with small amorphous particles are advantageous in the last stage during the formation of crystalline phase. We were able to synthesize nanosized particles of YAP single phase at temperatures around 1100 °C for future preparation of phosphors or ceramics for optics.

Abstract

X- and Q-band ESR experiments on ceramics and single crystals of La 2 NiO 4+ δ (0.03 ≤ δ ≤ 0.17) are reported. The observed intrinsic ESR signals were interpreted in terms of ferromagnetic resonance of isolated oxidized nickel species in the lattice. The origin of the ferromagnetic component differs according to the δ value, consistent with the phase diagram and the phenomenon of charge and spin order. The ESR spectra on powders exhibit an anisotropic signal attributed to the presence of a magnetic local field, induced by the external magnetic field applied during the first ESR measurement. For specific value of δ , the ESR spectra show a “multilines signal” from the origin which could be due to the presence of magnetic polarons which are pinned on the surface. An ESR study vs. temperature for a powder sample with δ = 0.16 shows that the linewidth evolution is in relation with the transition from a dynamic stripe to a static stripe state at 160 K. At high temperature ( T > 600 K), a polaronic liquid is observed.

Abstract

A new approach of Cu-Ni substrate is reported, where the cubic textured Cu tape was fabricated by thermal-mechanical process, then a Ni layer was electro-deposited on the cubic textured Cu substrate. This approach is also suitable for fabricating long cubic textured metallic substrate for coated conductors. The formation of substrate texture and its thermal stability were investigated by XRD. After electro-depositing Ni layer, the sample has sharper cubic texture with ω = 5.2o and φ = 7.1o, and samples’ texture becames even better (ω = 5 o and φ = 5.2o) after annealing at 950°C for 30min.

Abstract

This work reports some new studies related to critical aspects in the development of coated conductors (CC). New bi-axially textured tapes based on commercial copper alloys were fabricated and tested as substrates for LZO buffer layer deposited by chemical solution deposition (CSD). Such a layer form cube texture on NiW5 and Cu55Ni45 with an identical or even better texture than that of the substrate. It was shown that a S c(2x2) sub-layer formed at the metallic surface as a positive effect on the nucleation. The crystallisation of LZO on Cu55Ni45 still has to be improved, being inhibited by trapped C in the film. Recent progresses using our continuous MOCVD system are shown. A CC fabricated by an all MOCVD process has been obtained on SS/YSZIBAD substrate with high transport critical current (170 A/cm-width, at 77 K). It is also shown that LZOMOD can efficiently protect Ni5W RABITS from oxidation during deposition of CeO2 layer by MOCVD under 30-40% O2 partial pressure. This opens the possibility to fabricate a CC on RABITS by MOCVD. This shows that a mixed MOD/MOCVD approach could be efficient. Finally a 2m long CC SS/YSZIBAD has been tested for fault current limiter applications. Best limitation was observed at 86 K where an equivalent energy of 340 J has been dissipated in the CC during 12 ms without apparent damage of the CC. In a subsequent operation, the CC was however destroyed. The causes are discussed in the perspective to design better architectures for this application.

Dans une premiere partie, l'article est focalise sur des methodes novatrices, qui consistent a fonctionnaliser un substrat metallique souple par des procedes physiques ou chimiques. Dans une deuxieme partie on met en avant les methodes les plus originales et prometteuses pour deposer l'espece supraconductrice. Les avantages et promesses de ces methodes sont discutes dans une courte conclusion.

This paper proposes to revisit the 2-D Variational Mode Decomposition (2-D-VMD) in order to separate the incident and reflected waves in experimental images of internal waves velocity field. 2-D-VMD aims at splitting an image into a sequence of oscillating components which are centered around specific spatial frequencies. In this work we develop a proximal algorithm with local convergence guarantees, allowing more flexibility in order to deal with modes having different spectral properties and to add some optional constraints modeling prior informations. Our method is compared with the standard 2-D-VMD and with a Hilbert based strategy usually employed for processing internal waves images.

Abstract

We present an experimental study of the mixing processes in a gravity current flowing on an inclined plane. The turbulent transport of momentum and density can be described in a very direct and compact form by a Prandtl mixing length model: the turbulent vertical fluxes of momentum and density are found to scale quadratically with the vertical mean gradients of velocity and density. The scaling coefficient, the square of the mixing length, is approximately constant over the mixing zone of the stratified shear layer. We show how, in different flow configurations, this length can be related to the shear length of the flow ( e / ∂ z u 3 ) 1 / 2 . We also study the fluctuations of the momentum and density turbulent fluxes, showing how they relate to mixing and to the entrainment/detrainment balance. We suggest a quantitative measure of local entrainment and detrainment derived from observed conditional correlations of density flux and density or vertical velocity fluctuations.

Abstract

As the modulus is a quantitative measure of the bulk mechanical properties, it can serve as a sensitive probe for the crack propagation kinetics inside the materials. The YBa 2 Cu 3 O x (YBCO) single domain with a tetragonal phase was pressed under a uniaxial pressure along the c -axis. The pressed sample was oxygenated at 400 °C for various time intervals up to 188 h. For each oxygenation interval, Young’s modulus was measured to study the effects of c -axis pressure on ab -plane crack propagation in single domain YBCO. The measurement was repeated along two directions: ab -plane (S) and c -axis (T), on the same sample annealed in flowing oxygen for various times. The experimental results showed that the modulus values of both directions remained unchanged for the entire oxygenation period, indicating that the ab -plane crack propagation was effectively suppressed. In contrast, it was found that, without the c -axis pressure, the modulus experienced a rapid fall when the sample had undergone a massive tetragonal-to-orthorhombic (T-to-O) transition.

Abstract

The electrical resistivity of a single crystal sample of La2NiO4+δ with δ=0.11 is investigated in relation with the formation and correlation lengths of charge and spin ordered stripes. It appears almost impossible to explain the activated transport properties by conventional semi-conductor models where the holes are homogeneously distributed in the lattice. Present results rather suggest that the magnetic fluctuations play an important role on the charge transport and are strongly dependent upon the oxygen content.

Abstract

The acrylamide sol-gel processes becomes a fast, cheap, reproducible and easy to scale-up chemical way for obtaining nanopowders of BaZrO3, which can be used for crucible sintering or many electronic applications. This synthesis method allows performing 100 g of high purity nanosized particles, in one run, with simple laboratory equipment and using low cost raw materials. Temperature synthesis and atmosphere conditions are studied for obtaining best powders. They are sintered at 1450°C to full density, then at much lower temperature than previously reported, making possible the crucible fabrication of BaZrO3 for many laboratories.

Abstract

International audience; We study the magnetic induction in a confined swirling flow of liquid sodium, at integral magnetic Reynolds numbers up to 50. More precisely, we measure in situ the magnetic field induced by the flow motion in the presence of a weak external field. Because of the very small value of the magnetic Prandtl number of all liquid metals, flows with even modest R-m are strongly turbulent. Large mean induction effects are observed over a fluctuating background. As expected from the von Karman flow geometry, the induction is strongly anisotropic. The main contributions are the generation of an azimuthal induced field when the applied field is in the axial direction (an Omega effect) and the generation of axial induced field when the applied field is the transverse direction (as in a large scale alpha effect). Strong fluctuations of the induced field, due to the flow nonstationarity, occur over time scales slower than the flow forcing frequency. In the spectral domain, they display a f(-1) spectral slope. At smaller scales (and larger frequencies) the turbulent fluctuations are in agreement with a Kolmogorov modeling of passive vector dynamics.

Abstract

The acrylamide gelification process is a fast, inexpensive, reproducible, and easily scaled up chemical method for obtaining nanopowders of BaZrO3 that can be used for sintering crucibles and many electronic applications. This method enables the production of 100 g of high-purity powders in one run, using simple laboratory equipment and low-cost raw materials. The gelification process, synthesis temperature, and gas conditions required for obtaining high-quality powders were the subjects of the present study. Fine powders were sintered to full density at 1450°C, making the fabrication of BaZrO3 crucibles possible for many laboratories.

Abstract

A specific apparatus to acquire conductivity data on glass former systems such as alumino-silicates in both solid and liquid state is reported. To illustrate the abilities of such a device, typical results obtained on a compound belonging to the alumina-silica-lime system are given in the 600-1650 °C range of temperature. The analysis of the conductivity shows the existence of at least two transport mechanism regimes. Below the glass transition, the transport mechanism is a thermally activated process well described by an Arrhenius law. Around the glass transition temperature, a change of behaviour occurs and molten conductivity follows a Vogel - Tammann - Fulcher law.

Abstract

We present experimental measurements of a wall-bounded gravity current, motivated by characterizing natural gravity currents such as oceanic overflows. We use particle image velocimetry and planar laser-induced fluorescence to simultaneously measure the velocity and density fields as they evolve downstream of the initial injection from a turbulent channel flow onto a plane inclined at$10^\circ $with respect to horizontal. The turbulence level of the input flow is controlled by injecting velocity fluctuations upstream of the output nozzle. The initial Reynolds number based on the Taylor microscale of the flow,$R_{\lambda }$, is varied between 40 and 120, and the effects of the initial turbulence level are assessed. The bulk Richardson number$\mathit{Ri}$for the flow is${\sim }$0.3 whereas the gradient Richardson number$\mathit{Ri}_g$varies between 0.04 and 0.25, indicating that shear dominates the stabilizing effect of stratification. Kelvin–Helmholtz instability results in vigorous vertical transport of mass and momentum. We present baseline characterization of standard turbulence quantities and calculate, in several different ways, the fluid entrainment coefficient$E$, a quantity of considerable interest in mixing parameterization for ocean circulation models. We also determine the properties of mixing as represented by the flux Richardson number$\mathit{Ri}_f$as a function of$\mathit{Ri}_g$and diapycnal mixing parameter$K_{\rho }$versus the buoyancy Reynolds number$\mathit{Re}_b$. We find reasonable agreement with results from natural flows.

Abstract

We apply a new threshold detection method based on the extreme value theory to the von K\'arm\'an sodium (VKS) experiment data. The VKS experiment is a successful attempt to get a dynamo magnetic field in a laboratory liquid-metal experiment. We first show that the dynamo threshold is associated to a change of the probability density function of the extreme values of the magnetic field. This method does not require the measurement of response functions from applied external perturbations, and thus provides a simple threshold estimate. We apply our method to different configurations in the VKS experiment showing that it yields a robust indication of the dynamo threshold as well as evidence of hysteretic behaviors. Moreover, for the experimental configurations in which a dynamo transition is not observed, the method provides a way to extrapolate an interval of possible threshold values., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures

Abstract

We analyze time series stemming from experiments and direct numerical simulations of hydrodynamic and magnetohydrodynamic turbulence. Simulations are done in periodic boxes, but with a volumetric forcing chosen to mimic the geometry of the flow in the experiments, the von K\'arm\'an swirling flow between two counter-rotating impellers. Parameters in the simulations are chosen to (within computational limitations) allow comparisons between the experiments and the numerical results. Conducting fluids are considered in all cases. Two different configurations are considered: a case with a weak externally imposed magnetic field, and a case with self-sustained magnetic fields. Evidence of long-term memory and $1/f$ noise is observed in experiments and simulations, in the case with weak magnetic field associated with the hydrodynamic behavior of the shear layer in the von K\'arm\'an flow, and in the dynamo case associated with slow magnetohydrodynamic behavior of the large scale magnetic field., Comment: 10 pages, 9 figures

Abstract

Hydrodynamic and magnetic behaviors in a modified experimental setup of the von Kármán sodium flow-where one disk has been replaced by a propeller-are investigated. When the rotation frequencies of the disk and the propeller are different, we show that the fully turbulent hydrodynamic flow undergoes a global bifurcation between two configurations. The bistability of these flow configurations is associated with the dynamics of the central shear layer. The bistable flows are shown to have different dynamo efficiencies; thus for a given rotation rate of the soft-iron disk, two distinct magnetic behaviors are observed depending on the flow configuration. The hydrodynamic transition controls the magnetic field behavior, and bifurcations between high and low magnetic field branches are investigated.

Abstract

We present the preparation, structural and electrical properties of Hg-based superconducting thin films prepared by two step process from different precursor films. Ba-Ca-Cu-(O,F) precursor films were prepared by sequential evaporation method and Re-Ba-Ca-Cu-O precursor films by high-pressure sputtering on CeO 2 buffered R-plane sapphire substrates. Then, Hg-Re-Ba-Ca-Cu-O pellets as a source of Hg-vapour were applied in heat-treatment. The Hg cuprate thin films with maximum zero resistance critical temperature Too ( 119.8 K were continuous with a sufficient adhesion for patterning. In the case of the films prepared by Re-doped precursor film we observed uniform surface morphology and superconducting properties.

Abstract

Thin films (∼350 nm) of Hg 0.75 Re 0.25 Ba 2 Ca 2 Cu 3 O 8+δ superconductor phase have been formed on MgO single crystals by aerosol deposition at high temperatures from an aqueous nitrate solution followed by a mercuration process at low pressure ( c -axis orientation (Δω=0.7°) and an in-plane texture as shown by X-ray pole figures. The intragrain critical current density determined from d.c. magnetisation reaches 1.4 10 7 A cm −2 at 4.2 K and 1.6 10 6 A cm −2 at 77 K in self-field. This material is then very promising for electronic applications. The process that we develop is fast, cheap and very attractive for scaling up in the point of view of coated conductors.

Abstract

Magnetohydrodynamics studies in laboratory experiments have long been restricted to low magnetic Reynolds number flows, mainly as a result of the very high magnetic diffusivity λ = 1/μσ of common conducting fluids (μ is the fluid's magnetic permeability and σ its electrical conductivity). The best conductivities are found in liquid metals which have a unit magnetic permeability, relative to vacuum. We show experimentally that a suspension of solid particles with a high magnetic permeability in a liquid metal yields an effective medium that has a high electrical conductivity and an enhanced magnetic permeability. The dispersion of the beads results from the turbulent fluid motion. The range of accessible magnetic Reynolds number can be increased by a factor of as much as 4 in our experimental setup.

Abstract

A thick film (~1 µm) of (Hg, Re)-1223 precursor has been deposited on a substrate at high temperature (800 °C) from an aerosol. The mercuration is then performed ex situ in a sealed quartz ampoule. This forms a (Hg, Re)-1223 superconducting film of optimum Tc (133 K) without post-annealing oxygen processes. The film is c-axis textured. The total process is fast and low cost and could be easily scaled up.

Abstract

In this work we discuss one of the principal parameters to control for producing pieces of (Hg,Re)-1223 for device applications. The first prerequisite is the mixing of the cations which should be as good as possible and the degree of oxygen in the phase. The influence of the precursor oxygenation is discussed. It is shown that overdoped samples of (Hg,Re)-1223 have an increased irreversibility line. Finally the possibility of reprocessing sintered superconducting samples is shown, a very important aspect for the preparation of several ceramic electronic pieces.

Abstract

Copper deficiency is studied in YBa 2 Cu 3 O 7− x phase. We compare polycrystals formed by sintering with textured and single crystals. The experimental method uses electron probe micro-analysis and X-ray structural determinations on single crystals. We show that YBa 2 Cu 3 O 7− x phase accommodates Cu deficiency up to several percent. Copper vacancies are located at the Cu(1) site (in the chains). Copper deficiency is evidenced when a liquid phase is involved in the chemical process. The implications of copper vacancies on the physical properties has probably to be reconsidered in future.

Abstract

Using data obtained with the ALEPH detector at the Z resonance, a measure based on transverse momentum is shown to exhibit a correlation between the two halves of a hadronic event which cannot be explained by energy-momentum conservation, flavour conservation, the imposition of an event axis or imperfect event reconstruction. Two possible interpretations based on existing Monte Carlo models are examined: a) ARIADNE, with the correlation forming early in the parton shower and with the transition from partons to hadrons playing only a minor part; b) JETSET, with the correlation forming at the fragmentation stage. A correlation technique based on a jet cluster analysis is used to make a comparison of the models with the data. It is concluded that both non-perturbative and perturbative effects make important contributions to the observed correlation. Abstract

Studies of QCD in $\mbox{e}^+\mbox{e}^- \rightarrow$ Hadrons at $E_{cm} = $} 130 and 136 GeV The ALEPH Collaboration An analysis of the properties of hadronic final states produced in electron-positron annihilation at centre-of-mass energies of 130 and 136 GeV is presented. The measurements are based on a data sample of 5.7 $\mbox{pb}^{-1}$ collected in November 1995 with the \Aleph detector at LEP. Inclusive charged particle distributions, jet rates and event-shape distributions are measured and the results are compared with the predictions of QCD-based models. From the measured distributions quantities are determined for which the dependence on the centre-of-mass energy can be predicted by QCD, including the mean multiplicity of charged particles, the peak position of the inclusive distribution of $\xi = -\ln x_p$ ($x_p = p / p_{beam}$), and the strong coupling constant $\alpha_s$. The QCD predictions are tested by comparing with corresponding measurements at $E_{cm} = 91.2$ GeV and at lower energies.

Abstract

International audience; Predicting dynamo self-generation in liquidmetal experiments has been an ongoing question for many years. In contrast to simple dynamical systems for which reliable techniques have been developed, the ability to predict the dynamo capacity of a flow and the estimate of the corresponding critical value of the magnetic Reynolds number (the control parameter of the instability) has been elusive, partly due to the high level of turbulent fluctuations of flows in such experiments (with kinetic Reynolds numbers in excess of 10^6).We address these issues here, using the von Karman sodium experiment and studying its response to an externally applied magnetic field. We first show that a dynamo threshold can be estimated from analysis related to critical slowing down and susceptibility divergence, in configurations for which dynamo action is indeed observed. These approaches are then applied to flow configurations that have failed to self-generate magnetic fields within operational limits, and we quantify the dynamo capacity of these configurations.

Abstract

The infrared reflection spectra of a YBa{sub 2}Cu{sub 3}O{sub 7{minus}{delta}} single-crystal 5{times}7-mm{sup 2} surface containing the {ital c} axis have been recorded from 4 K to room temperature. The spectra obtained for different values of {delta} with the same sample show unambiguously that an extra band, coupled with phonons, appears at low frequencies in the superconducting phase. By decoupling this excitation from the other contributions to the dielectric function, we show that the thermal evolution of the extra band follows the expected behavior for the superconducting order parameter. The excitation energy is characteristic of Cooper pairs formation. The residual low-frequency optical conductivity in the superconducting state is discussed. {copyright} {ital 1996 The American Physical Society.}

Abstract

D + mesons produced inZ 0→bb events were separated from theZ 0→cc component using a lifetime tag. Using a sample of 1.5 million hadronicZ decays collected with theAleph detector theB 0 andD s + yields have been measured: $$\begin{gathered} \hfill B(b \to \bar B_s^0 )B(\bar B_s^0 \to D_s^ + ) = 0.088 \pm 0.020(stat.) \\ \hfill \pm 0.020(stat.) \\ \hfill B(c \to D_s^ + ) = 0.088 \pm 0.020(stat.)_{ - 0.016}^{ + 0.019} (syst.) \\ \end{gathered} $$ TheB 0 lifetime was measured in aB 0 enriched sample reconstructing the decay length from the vertex of theD + with a hadron from theB 0 decay. The result obtained is: $$\tau _{B_s } = 1.61_{ - 0.29}^{ + 0.30} (stat.)_{ - 0.016}^{ + 0.018} (syst.)$$ ps.

Abstract

Superconducting properties of YBa2Cu3O7–r ceramics have been investigated with the aim of avoiding the weak links that are the principal reasons for low critical current densities in this compound. An efficient grain growth process should be useful in this respect. Superconducting ceramics were prepared from a commercial precursor powder (Hoechst) with or without addition of Y2BaCuO5 and from a gel precursor powder. Grain growth kinetics and densification are first derived under such conditions that control the liquid-phase contribution. Grain growth in the solid-state regime is anisotropic, possibly due to anisotropic grain boundary energies. Grains in the fine powder (gel precursor) grow 10 times faster than in the commercial reference but grain size saturates because of steric hindrance. Addition of Y2BaCuO5 particles inhibits grain growth in the solid-state regime. 211 particles are incorporated into grains when a transient liquid phase is present. Superconducting properties were characterized by 50-Hz magnetization hysteresis cycles at 77 K under H= 0.2 to 12 mT to probe weak-link behavior. Additional studies were performed at 5 K using higher fields. Weak-link contribution is decreased when samples from the gel route are processed in the solid-state regime (below the peritectic temperature). This may be attributed to the propensity of gel powder to develop, naturally, preferential grain boundaries due to its intrinsic structural anisotropy.

Abstract

Efforts to fabricate superconducting wires made of YBa2Cu3O7 (YBCO) on La2Zr2O7 (LZO) buffered and biaxially textured Ni-5 at.%W (NiW) are described. Wires were manually shaped from LZO buffered NiW tapes. Different diameters were produced: 1.5, 2 and 3 mm. The wires were further covered with YBCO grown by metal organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD). We developed an original device in which the round substrate undergoes an alternated rotation of 180° around its axis in addition to a reel-to-reel translation. This new approach allows covering the whole circumference of the wire with a YBCO layer. This was confirmed by energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDX) analysis coupled to a scanning electron microscope (SEM). For all wire diameters, the YBCO layer thickness varied from 300 to 450 nm, and the cationic composition was respected. Electron backscattering diffraction (EBSD) measurements were performed directly on an as-deposited wire without surface preparation allowing the investigation of the crystalline quality of the film surface. Combining EBSD with XRD results we show that YBCO grows epitaxially on the LZO buffered NiW wires. For the first time, superconductive behaviors have been detected on round substrates in both the rolling and circular direction. Jc reached 0.3 MA cm−2 as measured at 77 K by transport and third-harmonic detection. Those preliminary results confirm the effectiveness of the MOCVD for complex geometries, especially for YBCO deposition on small diameter wires. This approach opens huge perspectives for the elaboration of a new generation of YBCO-based round conductors.
