Achieving the long-term stability of perovskite solar cells is arguably the most important challenge required to enable widespread commercialization. Understanding the perovskite crystallization process and its direct impact on device stability is critical to achieving this goal. The commonly employed dimethyl-formamide/dimethyl-sulfoxide solvent preparation method results in a poor crystal quality and microstructure of the polycrystalline perovskite films. In this work, we introduce a high-temperature dimethyl-sulfoxide-free processing method that utilizes dimethylammonium chloride as an additive to control the perovskite intermediate precursor phases. By controlling the crystallization sequence, we tune the grain size, texturing, orientation (corner-up versus face-up) and crystallinity of the formamidinium (FA)/caesium (FA)yCs1–yPb(IxBr1–x)3 perovskite system. A population of encapsulated devices showed improved operational stability, with a median T80 lifetime (the time over which the device power conversion efficiency decreases to 80% of its initial value) for the steady-state power conversion efficiency of 1,190 hours, and a champion device showed a T80 of 1,410 hours, under simulated sunlight at 65 °C in air, under open-circuit conditions. This work highlights the importance of material quality in achieving the long-term operational stability of perovskite optoelectronic devices.

The use of layered, 2D perovskites can improve the stability of metal halide perovskite thin films and devices. However, the charge carrier transport properties in layered perovskites are still not fully understood. Here, the sum of the electron and hole mobilities (Σμ) in thin films of the 2D perovskite PEA2PbI4, through transient electronically contacted nanosecond-to-millisecond photoconductivity measurements, which are sensitive to long-time, long-range (micrometer length scale) transport processes is investigated. After careful analysis, accounting for both early-time recombination and the evolution of the exciton-to-free-carrier population, a long-range mobility of 8.0 +/− 0.6 cm2 (V s)–1, which is ten times greater than the long-range mobility of a comparable 3D material FA0.9Cs0.1PbI3 is determined. These values are compared to ultra-fast transient time-resolved THz photoconductivity measurements, which are sensitive to early-time, shorter-range (tens of nm length scale) mobilities. Mobilities of 8 and 45 cm2 (V s)–1 in the case of the PEA2PbI4 and FA0.9Cs0.1PbI3, respectively, are obtained. This previously unreported concurrence between the long-range and short-range mobility in a 2D material indicates that the polycrystalline thin films already have single-crystal-like qualities. Hence, their fundamental charge carrier transport properties should aid device performance.

The stability of perovskite solar cells is a key issue for industrial development. One reason for this is the volatile organic methylammonium (MA) cation, which is prone to degas under elevated temperatures from the perovskite. At the same time, small amounts of MA are used for practically all highest performing solar cells. These compositions have also shown relatively promising stabilities. This raises the question of MA stability with respect to different, application-dependent stability requirements. Interestingly, MA stability was mainly studied on thin films that differ from full devices or with architectures which are also prone to degrade. Therefore, the degradation behavior on complete MA containing devices with a relatively stable architecture is required to quantify the long-term stability of MA. This enables to determine at which timescales MA is unstable and which role it can play in future compositions. If MA is indeed unstable at much longer timescales than previously recorded, it also indicates that more severe degradation pathways are currently underappreciated. Here, “weakest link” MAPbI3 solar cells show stability where devices retained 100% of their initial efficiency over 1000 h of aging under constant illumination and maximum power point tracking at 20 °C. At elevated temperatures of 50 and 65 °C, the devices retained 100% and 90% of their initial efficiency after 500 h of illumination, respectively. Impressively, at 95 °C the MAPbI3 device retained 85% of its initial efficiency after 500 h under constant illumination, which is some of the best stability data reported to date for MA. Thus, MA-containing devices require further studying. Nevertheless to achieve the necessary industrial lifetimes of more than 25 years, the complete removal of MA is a sensible precaution to systematically avoid any long-term risk factors.

Perovskite solar cells deliver high efficiencies, but are often made from high-cost bespoke chemicals, such as the archetypical hole-conductor, 2,2′,7,7′-tetrakis(N,N-di-p-methoxy-phenylamine)-9-9′-spirobifluorene (spiro-OMeTAD). Herein, new charge-transporting carbazole-based enamine molecules are reported. The new hole conductors do not require chemical oxidation to reach high power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) when employed in n-type-intrinsic-p-type perovskite solar cells; thus, reducing the risk of moisture degrading the perovskite layer through the hydrophilicity of oxidizing additives that are typically used with conventional hole conductors. Devices made with these new undoped carbazole-based enamines achieve comparable PCEs to those employing doped spiro-OMeTAD, and greatly enhanced stability under 85 °C thermal aging; maintaining 83% of their peak efficiency after 1000 h, compared with spiro-OMeTAD-based devices that degrade to 26% of the peak PCE within 24 h. Furthermore, the carbazole-based enamines can be synthesized without the use of organometallic catalysts and complicated purification techniques, lowering the material cost by one order of magnitude compared with spiro-OMeTAD. As a result, we calculate that the overall manufacturing costs of future photovoltaic (PV) modules are reduced, making the levelized cost of electricity competitive with silicon PV modules.

State-of-the-art argon $KLL$ Auger spectra measured using photon energies of $h\ensuremath{\nu}=3216$ and 3400 eV are presented along with an Ar $[1s]$ photoelectron spectrum (square brackets indicate holes in the respective orbital). The two different photon energies used for measuring the Auger spectra allow distinguishing between the shake transitions during the Auger decay and the Auger transitions of the photoelectron satellites. A complete assignment of satellite transitions is provided, partially based on configuration-interaction calculations. In addition, Ar $[1s3(s,p)]{n}^{\ensuremath{'}}{l}^{\ensuremath{'}}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}[2{p}^{2}{(}^{1}{D}_{2})]$ transitions are observed, which can be explained by knock-down transitions leading to a direct exchange of angular momentum between the excited electron and the Auger electron. The lifetime broadenings of the Ar $[2s]$ single-core-hole state and the $[2{s}^{2}]$ and $[2s2p]$ double-core-hole states are also determined, confirming previously observed trends for double-core-hole states.

Recently organic–inorganic perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have emerged as promising candidates for photovoltaics because of their relatively high efficiency and low processing costs. However, for possible commercialisation, long-term stability remains a key obstacle, especially when compared to silicon or GaAs. Thus, future research will significantly focus on stability. The most relevant industry standards for the stability of solar cells are issued by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), summarized in the so-called IEC 61215 norm. The IEC 61215 is a series of very detailed, time-consuming and interconnected stress tests that provide accelerated aging conditions to extrapolate the potential long-term lifetime of a solar module. Established silicon, for example, passes the full IEC 61215. To gain the confidence of investors and customers, passing the full IEC 61215 is a necessary minimum requirement for the commercialization of perovskites. Interestingly, the IEC 61215 is not openly accessible which may be one reason why there are often references to outdated versions. To remedy this situation, we introduce and analyse the most current IEC 61215 stability standards for solar cells and to which degree perovskites have passed them. We then elaborate on the most pertinent challenges for the long-term stability of PSCs in the coming years. This includes less explored stability tests such as potential-induced degradation (IEC TS 62804-1) and ammonia corrosion (IEC 62716). From this, it is evident that currently underappreciated degradation modes such as mechanical stability, high applied voltages and reverse bias, where especially hot spots could become problematic, must be considered in the coming years when evaluating the long-term stability of PSCs.

A series of [60]fullerenes covalently functionalized with the polymer poly(ethylene glycol) is presented. These new [60]fullerene-based materials have been incorporated as additives in CH3 NH3 PbI3 (MAPbI3 ), the most common organic-inorganic perovskite used in perovskite solar cells. The extensive photovoltaic study performed by using these materials shows several beneficial effects on the performance of these cells, including a reduction in hysteresis and an increased stability against moisture, whereby the solar cells retain up to 97 % of their initial power conversion efficiency in an ambient atmosphere.

The presence of bulk and surface defects in perovskite light harvesting materials limits the overall efficiency of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). The formation of such defects is suppressed by adding methylammonium chloride (MACl) as a crystallization aid to the precursor solution to realize high-quality, large-grain triple A-cation perovskite films and that are combined with judicious engineering of the perovskite interface with the electron and hole selective contact materials. A planar SnO2/TiO2 double layer oxide is introduced to ascertain fast electron extraction and the surface of the perovskite facing the hole conductor is treated with iodine dissolved in isopropanol to passivate surface trap states resulting in a retardation of radiationless carrier recombination. A maximum solar to electric power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 21.65% and open circuit photovoltage (V-oc) of approximate to 1.24 V with only approximate to 370 mV loss in potential with respect to the band gap are achieved, by applying these modifications. Additionally, the defect healing enhances the operational stability of the devices that retain 96%, 90%, and 85% of their initial PCE values after 500 h under continuously light illumination at 20, 50, and 65 degrees C, respectively, demonstrating one of the most stable planar PSCs reported so far.
