A wide range of numerical wind flow models are available to simulate atmospheric flows. For wind resource mapping, the traditional approach has been to rely on linear Jackson–Hunt type wind flow models. Mesoscale numerical weather prediction (NWP) models coupled to linear wind flow models have been in use since the end of the 1990s. In the last few years, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) methods, in particular Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) models, have entered the mainstream, whereas more advanced CFD models such as large-eddy simulations (LES) have been explored in research but remain computationally intensive. The present study aims to evaluate the ability of four numerical models to predict the variation in mean wind speed across sites with a wide range of terrain complexities, surface characteristics and wind climates. The four are (1) Jackson–Hunt type model, (2) CFD/RANS model, (3) coupled NWP and mass-consistent model and (4) coupled NWP and LES model. The wind flow model predictions are compared against high-quality observations from a total of 26 meteorological masts in four project areas. The coupled NWP model and NWP-LES model produced the lowest root mean square error (RMSE) as measured between the predicted and observed mean wind speeds. The RMSE for the linear Jackson-Hunt type model was 29% greater than the coupled NWP models and for the RANS model 58% greater than the coupled NWP models. The key advantage of the coupled NWP models appears to be their ability to simulate the unsteadiness of the flow as well as phenomena due to atmospheric stability and other thermal effects. This paper describes the synthesis of solar photovoltaic output time series for grid integration studies and storage evaluation in locations where direct observations of irradiance are not available. An approach combining the flexibility of a numerical weather prediction model, satellite data, and the accuracy of on-site measurements is used. The method has recently been used to generate data for studies in Hawaii. Modeled data compared well to surface measurements of irradiance and power, however a negative bias in irradiance and positive bias in power was found. Variability at the aggregate of all locations sampled was found to be consistent with measured values. A stochastic-kinematic cloud model was used to simulate cloud movement and create two years of two-second irradiance and power production data in Hawaii. The results suggest the coupled model is able to simulate the behavior of the solar resource as well as its high-frequency fluctuations, or ramps, with acceptable accuracy. The modeled ramp distributions agreed well with the observed distributions for both individual sites and site aggregates at various time intervals. Overall, the modeled data were found to match the statistical characteristics of observed data with acceptable accuracy, and were deemed suitable for use in grid integration studies.

We study the homogeneous nucleation process in Stillinger-Weber silicon in the NVT ensemble. A clear first-order transition from the liquid to crystal phase is observed thermodynamically with kinetic and structural evidence of the transformation. At 0.75 T_m, the critical cluster size is about 175 atoms. The lifetime distribution of clusters as a function of the maximum size their reach follows an inverse gaussian distribution as was predicted recently from the classical theory of nucleation (CNT). However, while there is a qualitative agreement with the CNT, the free energy curve obtained from the simulations differs significantly from the theoretical predictions, suggesting that the low-density liquid phase found recently could play a role in the nucleation process., 21 pages

It was recently demonstrated that the Stillinger-Weber silicon undergoes a liquid-liquid first-order phase transition deep into the supercooled region (Sastry and Angell, Nature Materials 2, 739 (2003)). Here we study the effects of perturbations on this phase transition. We show that the order of the liquid-liquid transition changes with negative pressure. We also find that the liquid-liquid transition disappears when the three-body term of the potential is strengthened by as little as 5 %. This implies that the details of the potential could affect strongly the nature and even the existence of the liquid-liquid phase., Comment: 13 pages

Using various simulation techniques, such as molecular dynamics and the activation-relaxation technique, we are slowly developing a consistent picture of the dynamical properties of amorphous silicon. For example, results of an extensive search for the activated events surrounding a single minimum, in a well-relaxed model represented by a modified Stillinger-Weber potential, confirm that barrier height at the transition point, for activated mechanisms, is determined essentially by the binding energy of a single bond and not the details of the mechanism. We will discuss these results in some detail as well as recent simulations of nucleation in liquid and amorphous silicon.
