We decompose the satisfaction gap between East and West Germany into objective circumstances and subjective mentality, the latter capturing the way circumstances are being evaluated. Using the methodology proposed by Senik (2014) we find circumstances and mentality to contribute in the proportion 55: 45%. The mentality-related gap is driven by birth cohorts socialized under different political regimes – communist and liberal-capitalist – and disappears for the youngest cohort group. Results point towards churchliness and satisfaction with democracy being important explanations of the mentality gap. Within-person changes of the mentality gap occurred as aspirations or worries concerning politico-economic shocks were adjusted.

The influences of energy transitions on social inequity are multidimensional in their attributes and connections. For adequate accountability of their social correlates, policies aiming to implement a transition towards sustainable energy supply and demand have also to be evaluated regarding their influences on social inequalities, namely in terms of energy access and consumption. A capability-based and relational approach is used to monitor the social correlates of the governance of energy transitions. This accountability model is applied to three different European countries: Austria, Belgium, and Bulgaria. They have different characteristics in terms of levels and inequalities regarding material deprivation and energy access as well as patterns of energy transitions. The proposition here is that the capability approach could be usefully adopted to evaluate future implementation of energy transitions and to assess how they could influence inequalities in various aspects of citizen’s daily life. In such a framework, the focus is on potential links between energy transitions and energy inequalities that can be channelled by their respective relations to the capabilities. Data used to quantify the inequalities regarding various capabilities are from the Generations and Gender Programme (GGP). Previous research has found that subjective well-being (SWB) is lower for individuals classified as being in poverty. Using panel data for 39,239 individuals living in Germany from 2005-2013, we show that people’s SWB is negatively correlated with the state-level poverty ratio while controlling for individual poverty status and poverty intensity. The negative relationship between aggregate poverty and SWB is more salient in the upper segments of the income distribution and is robust to controlling for the rate of unemployment and per capita GDP. The character of poverty as a public bad suggests that poverty alleviation is a matter not only of equity, but of efficiency.

Conceptualizing externalities from perceived nuclear risk as being related to distance from nuclear facilities, we estimate the relationship between Swiss citizens’ life satisfaction (understood as a proxy of utility) and the distance of their place of residence from the nearest nuclear power plant. Controlling for a rich set of life satisfaction factors, we find a statistically and economically significant satisfaction-distance gradient, whose monetary value amounts to CHF 291 per kilometer of distance, on average. The gradient is smaller for those who may feel protected by wind direction and topographical conditions, and it differs by age, sex, and the level of education. The satisfaction-distance gradient has changed significantly after the nuclear disaster at Fukushima, Japan, indicating a reassessment of distance-dependent nuclear risk. We find no evidence of hedonic locational equilibrium with respect to nuclear risk.

This paper uses data on the life satisfaction of more than 100,000 individuals in 21 European countries from 2002 to 2011, to study the relationship between subjective well-being and the affordability for households of electricity, heating oil and natural gas. We find that energy prices have statistically and economically significant effects on subjective well-being. The effect sizes are smaller than but comparable to the effects of important personal factors of well-being. Effects above average are found in individuals from the lowest income quartile. In addition, effects are strongest at times when required energy expenditures can be expected to be high. The empirical results are consistent with the prediction that greater fuel poverty implies a greater effect of energy prices on well-being.

One of the pertinent issues, the future role of nuclear power, has gained increasing attention after the nuclear disaster at Fukushima, Japan. As a contribution to preference elicitation, we test whether the relationship between subjective well-being (SWB) of European citizens and the supply of nuclear power has changed after the Fukushima nuclear accident of March 11, 2011. Survey data for about 124,000 individuals in 23 European countries reveal that while European citizens' SWB was statistically unrelated to the share of nuclear power before the Fukushima disaster, it was negatively related to the nuclear share after the disaster. Taking the relationship between SWB and the nuclear share as an indicator of preference, this suggests the existence of an induced preference change.

Cerebral revascularization procedures are a treatment option in moyamoya disease patients, but recent studies failed to show an immediate benefit in cerebrovascular atherosclerotic disease. To facilitate optimal efficacy of the procedure, a detailed characterization of a representative perioperative complication rate and the role of potential risk factors such as underlying pathology, antiplatelet therapy, and the type of surgery performed is warranted and the purpose of this study.We included 158 consecutive patients with moyamoya disease or cerebrovascular atherosclerotic disease undergoing 168 direct revascularization procedures. Type of disease, antiplatelet therapy, coagulation disorders, surgical technique, intraoperative complications, postoperative imaging, the need for revision, and outcome at time of discharge were analyzed.Complication rate was low, with a high patency rate of 97%. Six hemispheres (3.6%) needed to undergo surgical revision; early morbidity was 10.7% with no mortality, with evidence of ischemia in 6.9% of patients. Type of pathology treated and surgical technique did not influence outcome. Antiplatelet treatment was not associated with an increased risk for hemorrhage or revision, but improved outcome (P0.05). Ischemia, hemorrhage, and the need for revision aggravated outcome at time of discharge.Extra-/intracranial bypass surgery remains a treatment option in patients with moyamoya disease, although its use in the context of atherosclerotic disease was recently put into question. Regardless, a detailed characterization of perioperative risk factors is needed to optimize a potential long-term benefit of surgery. At a high-volume center, the complication rate is low independent from the underlying pathology with a high patency rate. Antiplatelet treatment does not increase the risk of hemorrhagic complications, but may improve outcome. Longer follow-up is required to adequately assess the true efficacy of revascularization on stroke prevention.

We use survey data for 139,517 individuals in 26 European Countries, 2002-2011, to estimate the relationship between subjective well-being (SWB) and production shares of various types of electricity generation. The estimated relationships are taken to represent preference relationships over attributes of electricity supply systems (costs, safety, environmental friendliness etc.). Controlling for a variety of individual and macro-level factors, we find that individuals’ SWB varies systematically and significantly with differences in the electricity mix across countries and across time. Among other results, we find that a greater share of solar and wind power relative to nuclear power is associated with greater SWB and that the implied preference for solar and wind power over nuclear power has risen drastically after the Fukushima nuclear accident. In general, our results suggest that environmental and safety concerns are of major importance in European citizens’ preference function over electricity supply structures.
