Zircon U-Pb geochronology was applied to investigate the provenance, depositional ages, and paleogeography of the southwestern Gondwana in detrital and ash fall sediments from Carboniferous to Jurassic succession of the southern Paraná Basin. Four detrital age populations suggest provenance from local and distal sources located to the south, southeast, and southwest: (i) Archean to Paleoproterozoic zircons from the Rio de La Plata Craton, Nico Peres and Taquarembó terranes; (ii) Grenvillian zircons from the basement of the Gondwanides and Namaqua–Natal belts; (iii) Neoproterozoic grains from the Don Feliciano Belt; and (iv) Phanerozoic populations from Paleozoic orogenic belts and related foreland systems in Argentina, as well as eroded units of the Paraná Basin. The paleogeographic reconstruction indicates an evolution in three distinct stages: (1) a gulf open to the Panthalassa Ocean during the Carboniferous; (2) an epicontinental sea with the rise of the Gondwanides Orogeny during the Permian; and (3) continental deposits controlled by an intra-plate graben system during the Triassic. Permian–Triassic volcanogenic zircons provide constrained maximum depositional ages and attested persistent volcanism, related to the Choiyoi magmatism and effects of the climate change episodes. During the Triassic, the extensional graben system recorded the uplift of the basement through regional northwest and northeast fault systems, and the recycling of Permian zircons, modifying source-to-sink relationships. The Punta del Este Terrane, located in southeastern Brazil and eastern Uruguay, is a tectonostratigraphic terrane recognized in the Dom Feliciano Belt, the southern segment of Mantiqueira Province (Brasiliano Orogen). The northern sector of the terrane, called here by the Jaguarão Domain, is constituted by Arroio Telho, Arroio Grande, Matarazzo metamorphic complexes, and the Arroio Pedrado Gneisses. The first is composed of low to medium-grade metasedimentary rocks. Metasiliciclastic schists and marbles constitute the second, with serpentinites, magnesian schists, amphibolites, and metagabbros. The Matarazzo Complex comprises pure and siliceous dolomitic marble, metadolerite, and metagabbro. Arroio Pedrado unit comprises granodioritic to monzogranitic augen-gneisses. The rocks of the complexes were poly-deformed and intruded by high-K calc-alkaline peraluminous and metaluminous granitoids. The Pedro Osório, Arroio Grande, and Cerro Amaro dextral shear zones delimited the domain to the north. To the south and east, the units of the Jaguarão Domain were covered by coastal plain sediments. In gravimetric maps, the domain shows a high-density relief in contrast with the rocks of the granite belt (Pelotas Batholith). U-Pb zircon data from garnet-muscovite granites present crystallization ages of 587–568 Ma, which point to a widespread Ediacaran magmatism in the northern Punta del Este Terrane. U-Pb zircon provenance data of the metasedimentary sequences indicate main Meso- to Paleoproterozoic contribution, with subordinate Tonian to Cryogenian age populations. The geochronological results of the supracrustal rocks indicate a sedimentary deposition in an extensional setting, in which posterior deformation and metamorphism/magmatism compatible with a syn-orogenic setting in the context of the Dom Feliciano Belt framework. Abstract The origin and significance of the metavolcanic rocks of the Vila Nova Greenstone Belt (VNGB) is an important issue in order to understand the evolution of the Guyana Shield in Paleoproterozoic times. This work presents new LA-MC-ICPMS U-Pb zircon data and geochemical analyses carried out on metavolcanic rocks of the VNGB. This information was supplemented by petrography, stratigraphic and structural data acquired through geologic mapping and boreholes descriptions. In the Vila Nova region, the VNGB units rest on the Archean basement composed of orthogneisses of the Tumucumaque Complex. The lower portion of the VNGB consists of metabasalts and andesitic metabasalts, covered by an upper metasedimentary domain with subordinate metavolcanic and exhalative chemical rocks. The metavolcanic rocks include metabasalts, meta-andesites, amphibolites and amphibole schists, deformed and elongated according to the regional NW-SE structure. U-Pb zircon data yielded an age of 2154 ± 6 Ma for a meta-andesite of the lower portion of VNGB. One orogenic metamorphism followed by three deformational events were recognized. The D 1 and D 2 events formed the schistosity (S 1), preserved as intrafolial folds (F 2) and the crenulation cleavage (S 2) associated with the development of the oblique shear zones. Two distinct assemblages: 1) garnet, hornblende and biotite, and 2) hornblende, plagioclase and diopside define two distinct metamorphic peaks: M 1 and M 2 with temperatures of 450 and 650 °C, and lithostatic pressure between 4 and 6 kbar. The metabasites comprise geochemical compositions of Fe- and Mg-tholeiites with komatiitic affinity. The first group is enriched in LREE and HFSE. The second group shows MORB-like REE patterns in association with negative Nb, Ti and P anomalies. The observed features indicate that the metavolcanic rocks of the VNGB represent the evolution of back-arc basins and island arcs associated with the Trans-Amazonian Orogeny. These rocks characterize the Rhyacian evolution of the Maroni-Itacaiunas Province in the eastern portion of the Guyana Shield. A provenance and stratigraphic study of the Neoproterozoic Pontas do Salso Complex (PSC), western portion of the Dom Feliciano Belt (DFB), was conducted with U–Pb zircon geochronological analysis of the metasediments and the host rocks. The U–Pb isotopic data from detrital zircon of the metasediments indicate the source from the latest Middle Tonian to Late Cryogenian (between 897 and 684 Ma) and maximum depositional age of 685 ± 18 Ma in an arc-related basin setting adjacent in the Sao Gabriel Arc. The metasediments of the PSC form an elongated body in the N35°E direction and occur in the central portion of the São Gabriel Terrane (SGT), which is constituted by ophiolitic complexes and arc-related rocks, generated probably during the final consolidation of Rodinia supercontinent, although this question is still open. Low- to medium-K calc-alkaline, metaluminous affinity, and trace-element geochemistry suggest that the chemical composition of the protoliths was generated from metasomatized mantle sources in subduction zones. The PSC is composed of meta-arkoses, with subordinate metaconglomerates and metapelites. The meta-arkoses are disposed in plane-parallel layers, which also internally feature small-scale cross-bedding structures. The matrix has a blastopsammitic, poorly selected, fine to coarse texture, and hexagonal quartz and plagioclase porphyroclasts with superimposed thermal metamorphism. The polymict metaconglomerates are matrix-supported, with 15–55% of clasts of metavolcanic rocks, metasediments, undeformed granites, and quartz veins. The metapelites comprise mainly muscovite phyllites with syn-tectonic garnet and chloritoid porphyroblasts. The basic volcanic rocks in the Palma region, southern portion of the São Gabriel Terrane, have always been interpreted as generated during the active subduction period of the São Gabriel orogeny (Cryogenian). This terrane was built as the result of the Charrua Ocean closure between 900-680 Ma. The basalts show a subhorizontal igneous flow foliation and porphyritic texture, with plagioclase phenocrysts in a thin matrix composed of plagioclase, augite and magnetite, commonly altered to actinolite, chlorite and epidote. They have amygdales and veinlets reflecting a pervasive hydrothermal phase and are affected by thermal metamorphism related to Jaguari granite intrusion. Two samples were dated by the U-Pb zircon geochronology and yielded crystallization ages of 563±2 Ma and 573±6 Ma. The basalts have transitional composition from tholeiitic to calc-alkaline, metaluminous character, trace elements patterns rich in large-ion lithophile element (LILE) with negative anomalies of Nb, P and Ti, slight enrichment in light rare-earth elements (LREE) and horizontal pattern of heavy rare earth elements (HREE). The data allow interpreting the basalts as belonging to the Acampamento Velho Formation of the Camaquã Basin, and related to the basalts of the Ramada and Taquarembó plateaus. The Gondwana continent was the base of great basin inception, sedimentation and magmatism throughout the Cambrian to Middle Jurassic periods. The northwestern Mozambique igneous and metamorphic basement assemblages host the NW-trending Moatize Minjova Basin, which has great economic potential for coal and gas mining. This rift basin was activated by an S-SW stress field during the Early Permian period, as constrained by regional and field scale structural data. Tectonically induced subsidence in the basin, from the reactivation of NW-SE and NNE-SSW regional structures is well recorded by faults, folds and synsedimentary fractures within the Early Late Permian Moatize Formation. NW-SE, N-S and NE-SW field structures consist of post-Karoo reactivation patterns related to a NNE-SSW extension produced by the Pangea breakup and early inception stages of the Great East African Rift System. The Early Late Permian sequences of the Moatize-Minjova Basin are composed of fluvial meandering, coal-bearing beds of the Moatize Formation, which comprises mostly floodplain, crevasse splay and fluvial channel lithofacies associations, deposited in a cyclic pattern. This sequence was overlapped by a multiple-story, braided fluvial plain sequence of the Matinde Formation (Late Permian – Early Triassic). Lithofacies associations in the Matinde Formation and its internal relationships suggest deposition of poorly channelized braided alluvial plain in which downstream and probably lateral accretion macroforms alternate with gravity flow deposits. NW paleoflow measurements suggest that Permian fluvial headwaters were located somewhere southeast of the study area, possibly between the African and Antarctic Precambrian highlands. U Pb LA-ICPMS geochronological analyses were carried out on zircon grains from metavolcanic rocks of the Bossoroca Complex and for one ash tuff of the Acampamento Velho Formation of the Camaquã Basin, in order to understand the evolution of the Neoproterozoic São Gabriel magmatic arc. A total of 42 analyses of igneous zircon grains were performed in three samples. The results yielded U Pb ages of 767.2 ± 2.9 Ma for the metavolcanic agglomerate (BOS-02); 765 ± 10 Ma for the metacrystal tuff (BOS-03) and 565.8 ± 4.8 Ma for the ash tuff (BOS-04). The Orogenic Cycle in Brazil is characterized by a set of orogenic belts consisting of petrotectonic associations juxtaposed by two collisional events that occurred at the end of the Neoproterozoic. In southern Brazil this orogeny formed the Dom Feliciano Belt, a unit composed of associations of rocks developed during two major orogenic events called São Gabriel (900–680 Ma) and Dom Feliciano (650–540 Ma). The main São Gabriel associations are tectonically juxtaposed as elongated strips according to the N20–30°E direction, bounded by ductile shear zones. The Bossoroca Complex comprises predominantly metavolcano-sedimentary rocks, characterized by medium-K calc-alkaline association generated in a cordillera-type magmatic arc. The volcanism occurred in sub-aerial environment, developing deposits generated by flow, resurgence and fall, sporadically interrupted by subaqueous epiclastic deposits, suggesting an arc related basin. The São Gabriel Terrane contains the petrotectonic units that represent the closure of the Charrua Ocean associated to the subduction period of the Brasiliano Orogenic Cycle in the Sul-rio-grandense Shield. The Serra dos Órgãos batholith in the State of Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) is a NE-SW-trending elongated body that occupies ca . 5000 km 2 in plan view. It is a foliated intrusion, especially at its borders and is crosscut by syn-magmatic shear zones, with foliations that are moderately-to steeply-dipping to the northwest and moderately-to shallow-dipping in the center and to the southeast, in a configuration of a large laccolith. It was emplaced between 560 and 570 Ma, during an extensional episode that was part of a series of events that comprise the Brasiliano Orogeny in SE Brazil, and which includes deformation, metamorphism and granite intrusion during the interval between 630 and 480 Ma. The two main rock types in the batholith are biotite-hornblende monzogranite, and biotite leucogranite, with subordinate tonalite, granodiorite, diorite, quartz diorite (enclaves), aplite and pegmatite. Harker-type diagrams help show two rock groups with similar trends of evolution: a dioritic and a granitic. The first one is tholeiitic, whereas the second is calc-alkaline, with medium-to high-K calc-alkaline affinity and metaluminous to slightly peraluminous character. In both groups strong decrease in Al 2 O 3 , MgO, FeOT and CaO relative to silica contents are observed, which is compatible with trends of fractional crystallization involving clinopyroxene and/or hornblende, plagioclase, opaque minerals, apatite, microcline and biotite. The Sr and Nd isotopic data suggest recycling of a Paleoproterozoic crust as an important petrological process to generate the batholith rocks. Geothermometry (amphibole composition) and geobarometry (saturation in zircon and apatite) indicate that most of the batholith solidified at mid to lower crustal levels at about 750 °C and between 5 and 5.5 kbar. We consider that Serra dos Órgãos crustal protoliths underwent melting caused by the interaction with hotter mafic magma at the base of the crust. These two magmas, with distinct initial compositions and rheology, probably underwent mixing and mingling. This process continued during the rise of the magma through the crust, which was accompanied by magmatic differentiation. The main feature that characterizes the post-collisional Serra dos Órgãos granite magmatism is the connection with high angle ductile shear zones of continental scale and presence to a greater or lesser extent of mafic magmas. The Várzea do Capivarita Complex is composed of pelitic gneisses with subordinate calc-silicate rock, marble and rare quartzite. It is part of the neoproterozoic Dom Feliciano Belt, in southern Brazil. The gneisses are associated to veins and tabular leucogranite bodies, which are the product of anatexis of the pelitic gneiss. The paragneisses of the Várzea do Capivarita Complex are tectonically juxtaposed to orthogneisses of the Arroio dos Ratos Complex. This complex is exposed as megaxenoliths in granites of the Encruzilhada do Sul Suite and as smaller fragments in the Quitéria and Cordilheira Granites, all part of the Pelotas Batholith. The metamorphic foliation is oriented to N30°W, with dips between 35 and 55° to the SW and mineral lineation is suborizontal with rake ranging from 15° to 30° and down dip to NW and SE, suggesting deformation associated with a transpressive system. Based on the paragenesis garnet–cordierite–sillimanite-biotite, metamorphism occurred at 720–820° C and pressure of 8–9 kbar, characterizing it as of intermediate pressure and high temperature series. Zircon grains of one sample of garnet–cordierite–sillimanite-biotite gneiss and one of peraluminous leucogranite was dated by the U–Pb SHRIMP method. The paragneiss metamorphic zircon yielded an age of 619 ± 4.3 Ma interpreted as an age of the main metamorphic event, whereas igneous zircon grains from the leucogranite indicates that magma crystallization took place at 620 ± 6.3 Ma. The main metamorphic foliation (S2) of the paragneiss and the leucogranite magmatic foliation (S 0 ) are parallel to each other, indicating that they were formed during the same event. This suggests that anatexis of the paragneisses of the Várzea do Capivarite Complex generated the peraluminous leucogranites right after the climax of the collisional metamorphism. This study focuses on the provenance, volcanic record, and tectonic setting of the Paleozoic Ventania System, a geologic province which comprises the Cambro-Devonian Ventania Fold Belt and the adjoining Permo-Carboniferous Claromecó Foreland Basin, located inboard the deformation front. The Ventania Fold Belt is formed of the Curamalal and Ventana groups, which are composed mainly of mature quartzites that were unconformably deposited on igneous and metamorphic basement. The Pillahuincó Group is exposed as part of the Claromecó Basin and it has lithological and structural features totally distinct from the lowermost groups. This group is composed of immature arkoses and subarkoses with intercalated tuff horizons, unconformably overlaying the quartzites and associated with glacial-marine deposits of the lower Late Carboniferous to Early Permian section. The petrography, as well as major and trace elements (including rare earth elements) support that the Ventania quartzites were derived from cratonic sources and deposited in a passive margin environment. For the Pillahuincó Group, we suggest a transition between rocks derived from and deposited in a passive margin environment to those with geochemical and petrographical signatures indicative of an active continental margin provenance. LA-MC-ICP-MS analysis performed on euhedral and prismatic zircon grains of the tuffs revealed an age of 284 ± 15 Ma. The geochemical fingerprints and geochronological data of the tuffs found in the Claromecó Basin support the presence of an active and widespread Lower Permian pyroclastic activity in southwestern Gondwana, which is interpreted as part of the Choiyoi Volcanic Province in Argentina and Chile. Hartmann and Cerva-Alves (2021) describe a field of silicified Cretaceous Paleodunes of the Botucatu Formation present in southernmost Brazil. In this comment, we explore pressing problems of their study and demonstrate that the authors inadequately use their data to support their conclusions. Abstract: The Cordilheira Suite is comprised of peraluminous granites that constitute, together with the Quitéria granite, the beginning of the formation of the Pelotas Batholith in the central portion of the Dom Feliciano Belt. The batholith is composed of seven granitic suites with minor occurrences of gabbro, diorite and subvolcanic rocks. Its evolution between 650 and 550 million years ago is characterised by a ranging from metaluminous to peraluminous rocks and from calc-alkaline to alkaline and peralkaline series. The Cordilheira Suite is composed of the Cordilheira, Arroio Francisquinho, Butiá and Três Figueiras granites, which contain muscovite and/or biotite, with the following accessory minerals: tourmaline, garnet, sillimanite, apatite, zircon, monazite and ilmenite. The granitic bodies are elongate; their ascent and emplacement were controlled by high-angle shear zones oriented at N45-70°E. They have mylonitic structures with magmatic foliation accompanied by a low-angle stretching lineation, indicating that these bodies were emplaced under syn-kinematic conditions during a transcurrent event. The granites have high-K calc-alkaline affinity and are peraluminous. The LILE and REE contents are low. The K2O/Na2O and CaO/Na2O ratios are approximately 1 and less than 0.3, respectively. Pseudosections calculated using the Perple X program suggests that the granites were formed at partial melting temperatures between 740 and 820 °C and pressure between 8.5 and 9 kbar. Petrographic and chemical data suggest that the magmas were generated by the partial melting of the migmatitic pelitic gneisses of the Várzea do Capivarita Complex and, to a lesser degree, orthogneisses of the Arroio dos Ratos Complex, which left a granulitic residue. UHT conditions of granulite facies metamorphism were recorded in the Várzea do Capivarita paragneisses by mineral paragenesis and indicate that temperatures between 900 and 1000 °C and pressures between 4 and 8 kbar were required for the partial melting. It is likely that these medium-pressure conditions resulted from the thickening of the continental crust when the Rio de La Plata Craton collided with the Kalahari Craton to form southwestern Gondwana at the end of the Neoproterozoic. Abstract: The post-collisional magmatism related to Brasiliano orogeny represented the final stage of the Dom Feliciano Belt in Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina states, southern Brazil, presenting high-K calc-alkaline to shoshonitic and alkaline chemical signatures. Magmatic episodes related to this early period were found in Botuverá region, Santa Catarina state, represented by diabase and lamprophyre (spessartite-type) dikes intrusive in metavolcano–sedimentary rocks of the Brusque Metamorphic Complex (CMB). These dikes have massive structure and igneous textures ranging from very fine equigranular to porphyritic, and the latter is characterized by the presence of phenocrysts of plagioclase and hornblende. The dikes have northeast direction and sharp contacts with the metamorphic rocks, indicating that its position was after the main orogenic regional metamorphism that affected the CMB, interpreted as of collisional nature. The diabase has a basic composition, whereas spessartite lamprophyres are intermediate, with geochemical affinities to the tholeiitic series, with a significant enrichment in light rare-earth elements (LREE) and large ion lithophile elements (LILE) such as Cs, Rb, Ba, K and Sr, and negative anomalies for high-field-strength elements (HFS) such as Nb, Ta, U and T. The concentration of standard trace elements and the Th/Yb and Ta/Yb ratios indicate that these magmas were derived from an enriched mantle source and were strongly contaminated by crust. Except for higher values of K, these features are similar to those found in basaltic volcanic rocks associated with the post-collisional period in south Brazil. The widely dispersed values of ɛND (618), ranging between −13.74 and +5.52, highlights the heterogeneity of the source and reinforces the importance of a crustal component in the generation of these rocks. The extremely low value of εNd (618), of −21.67 obtained for spessartite lamprophyres supports the importance of the involvement of crust in the genesis of this rock. Using the U–Pb and LA–ICP–MS method, a concordant age of 618 ± 8.7 Ma was obtained in zircon crystals of a diabase dike of the region of Barra do Areia, in Botuverá, SC. The existence of inherited zircon grains older than 1800 Ma in this sample supports the involvement of Paleoproterozoic continental crust. The Brusque Metamorphic Complex (BMC) is one of the main units of the Tijucas Terrain within the Dom Feliciano Belt, located in the state of Santa Catarina in southern Brazil. In the Itapema region, the BMC is composed chiefly of metasediments, including subordinate metabasalts, meta-ultramafic rocks, and clinoamphibole schists. The metavolcanic rocks form 4 m-thick lenses interlayered with metapelites and calc-silicate schists. Based on the observed textures and the associated structural, bulk-rock geochemical, and mineral chemical data, these metamafites and ultramafites were ancient lava flows of tholeiitic basalts and ultramafic cumulates. The mineral parageneses of the metabasalts are albite + actinolite + chlorite + epidote + titanite + magnetite and oligoclase + hornblende + epidote + titanite + magnetite, indicating progressive transformations produced under greenschist to amphibolite facies conditions. Volcanogenic metasediments show the same geochemical patterns as the metabasalts, whereas the metamorphosed ultramafic rocks consist of cumulates generated by crystal fractionation and flow segregation. The studied rocks show similar rare-earth element (REE) patterns, characterized by clearly higher normalized contents of light REEs compared with heavy REEs, without Eu anomalies in the metabasalts and positive Eu anomalies in meta-ultramafic rocks and volcanogenic metasediments. In accordance with the trace element contents that indicate a within-plate nature, the corresponding mafic melts apparently formed in the mantle by partial fusion and were subsequently enriched with crustal components during ascent into the sialic crust. The analysed 143Nd/144Nd and 87Sr/86Sr ratios lie between 0.5123 and 0.5126 and 0.7067 and 0.7086, respectively, and are thus typical of tholeiitic basalts of the continental plateau type. Initial ϵNd(936) values and derived model ages (T DM) between 1028 and 1762 million years support a mantle source or sources, with extraction and emplacement in the Neoproterozoic. Field relations and geochemical data (including isotopic data) indicate the generation of the studied mafic and ultramafic rocks in a continental rift. In the regional geologic context, the formation of the BMC volcanic and metasedimentary units marks a period of fragmentation of the Palaeoproterozoic continental crust. Abstract: The Capivarita Anorthosite, formed in an intraplate environment and later metamorphosed under amphibolites facies conditions, is exposed in the Dom Feliciano Belt as part of the Brasiliano magmatic arc and occurs as a roof-pedant in, or is even intruded by, 0.6Ga post-collisional granites. In this work, magmatic and metamorphic minerals were dated using the LA-MC-ICP-MS in situ method. U–Pb magmatic and metamorphic zircon dating yielded an age of 1573±21Ma and of 606±6Ma, respectively, whereas the igneous titanite dating yielded an age of 1530±33Ma and the metamorphic ages were 651±9Ma and 601±5Ma. The Lu–Hf model ages showed two clusters from 1.81 to 2.03Ga (ɛɛHf from +2.21 to +6.42) and 2.55–2.62Ga (ɛɛHf from −4.59 to −5.64). This intraplate magmatism can be connected to a very important episode of continental accretion in an extensional setting from the fragmentation of the supercontinent during the Early Mesoproterozoic. Abstract: Geological mapping, petrography, geochemistry, and isotope studies enable the division of the Pelotas Batholith into six granitic suites: Pinheiro Machado (PMS), Erval (ES), Viamão (VS), Encruzilhada do Sul (ESS), Cordilheira (CS), and Dom Feliciano (DFS). The rocks of the PMS show a large compositional range (granite through granodiorite to tonalite), and the suite is considered pre- to syncollisional. Other suites show restricted compositional variations (granite to granodiorite) and are late to postcollisional. In general, the suites are metaluminous to slightly peraluminous (PMS, ES, and VS) or peraluminous (CS) or have alkaline tendencies (ESS and DFS). The magmatic evolution corresponds to high-K calc-alkaline to alkaline magmatism. The suites are enriched in K, Rb, and REE compared with rocks of typical calc-alkaline series. Initial 87Sr/86Sr ratios vary from 0.705 to 0.716, except in the CS, where they attain values of 0.732–0.740. Sm–Nd TDM model ages vary between 0.98 and 2.0Ga, with initial εNd values ranging from −0.3 to −10. U–Pb zircon dates of samples from PMS, VS, and ESS suggest an age between 0.63 and 0.59Ga for magmatism. Rb–Sr dates of samples of alkaline granites from DFS present ages between 0.57 and 0.55Ga. Abstract The southern African plate underwent significant stresses since the Permian attributed to orogenesis and to mantle upwelling during Gondwana break-up. Rift basins developed over ancient basement structures during Early Permian and since the Cretaceous along the passive margin. We investigated the exhumation history of Precambrian basement rocks of the Karoo rift flanks of NW Mozambique using apatite fission tracks (AFT). Twenty seven samples were collected from the northern, center and southern areas surrounding the E-W and NW-SE-oriented basins. The AFT ages range between 215 ± 15 and 80 ± 6 Ma and MTLs are of 9.67–13.13 μm in size from NW Mozambique, with standard deviations of 1.20–2.89 μm. Thermal history modelling indicates long-term cooling of most samples from the latest onset of cooling for samples with standard deviations ca. <2 μm, while older and more complex thermal histories are provided by those with higher standard deviations. Three main exhumation phases are recognized at 300–280 Ma, 200–180 Ma and 100 Ma. The interpreted erosion amounts to about 1.5–3.0 km thick overburden and was triggered by magmatic and tectonic events from pre-, syn- and post-Gondwana break-up. The older cooling event (0.37–0.65 °C/Ma) registered in the northern area includes the period of Karoo type rift basin formation. During this phase between 0.5 and 1.5 km of continental crust was eroded from NW Mozambique and deposited in the Karoo basins. Enhanced erosion at this time was related to the end of Carboniferous-Permian glaciation of Gondwana. The second phase of cooling (0.20–0.50 °C/Ma) marks the onset of Gondwana break-up (ca. 180–190 Ma). At this phase of cooling the currently exposed surface of north Mozambique cooled below 110 ± 10 °C. High sedimentation rates are recorded for the early stages of development of offshore Mozambique basin (ca. 150–180 Ma). The Karoo Supergroup sequences were also sources of sedimentation offshore due to uplift of basin basement. The latter exhumation phase was triggered by epeirogenic uplift from tectonic activity, magmatism and kimberlite intrusion (ca.160–100 Ma). • The main populations of detrital zircon range in age from meso - to Paleoproterozoic. • The Jaguarão Domain (eastern Dom Feliciano Belt) is related to an extensional basin. • U-Pb/Lu-Hf zircon data pointed to geological units sources in the Namaqua Belt (Africa). The Neoproterozoic supracrustal units of the Dom Feliciano Belt in southern Brazil and eastern Uruguay provide a record of the tectonic evolution of the Brasiliano/Pan-African cycle in terms of sedimentation, deformation, and metamorphism during the western Gondwana supercontinent assembly. From the northern Punta del Este Terrane (Jaguarão Domain) and neighboring Herval Complex were acquired new LA-ICPMS U-Pb and Lu-Hf zircon data from significant samples of metasedimentary rocks and intrusive granites. The central units of the domain are the Arroio Telho and Arroio Grande metasedimentary complexes, which have detrital zircon data ranging in age from 3.2 to 0.7 Ga, with prominent age peaks at 2.2–1.7 Ga, 1.5–1.0 Ga, and 1.0–0.7 Ga. The Herval Complex samples revealed a similar provenance of detrital zircon ages, with two main intervals of 1.5–1.1 Ga and 1.0–0.7 Ga, and also minor Paleoproterozoic (2.0–1.7 Ga) and Archean (2.8–2.4 Ga) ages. The maximum depositional age of the supracrustal complexes is constrained to age populations between 700 and 650 Ma. The mylonitic intrusive peraluminous granites yielded crystallization ages of ca. ∼570 Ma. The Neoproterozoic metamorphic zircon overgrowths range from 680 to 570 Ma. The Lu-Hf data from the meso - to Paleoproterozoic zircons have εHf(t) values ranging from −10 to +10, with the dominance of slightly positive results, and Hf(t) model ages from Paleoproterozoic to Archean. The εHf(t) values in Neoproterozoic zircons are dominantly negative (−15 to +5) with meso - to Paleoproterozoic Hf(t) model ages. These results demonstrate that sedimentary deposition ceased and underwent metamorphism during the development of the Cryogenian/Ediacaran arc-related magmatism of the Dom Feliciano belt. Given the scarcity of Mesoproterozoic rocks in the Mantiqueira Province and nearby cratonic areas, the obtained data suggest that these detrital populations originated in southwestern African rocks. The Congo/Kalahari cratons (Africa) are the most likely source area for Paleoproterozoic and Archean detrital zircons. The geological context and isotopic results of the investigated supracrustal complexes point to a prior extensional tectonic setting during the Tonian (∼800 Ma), with regional deformation and metamorphism linked with the Dom Feliciano Belt accretionary and collisional stages (660–570 Ma). The Permian-Triassic time interval was a period of high sedimentation rates in the intracontinental Karoo rift basin of northwestern Mozambique, reflecting high exhumation rates in the surrounding high ground Precambrian-Cambrian basement and juxtaposed nappes. U-Pb LA-MC-ICPMS dating and Lu-Hf isotopic analysis of detrital zircons from the Late Permian-Early Triassic Matinde Formation of the Karoo Supergroup is used as a reliable proxy to map denudation patterns of source regions. Data allow discrimination of U-Pb age populations of ca. 1250-900 Ma, a secondary population between ca. 900-700 and a major contribution of ages around ca. 700-490 Ma. Zircon grains of the Mesoproterozoic age population present Mesoproterozoic (1000–1500 Ma) to Paleoproterozoic (1800–2300 Ma) Hf T DM ages, with positive (0 to +11) and negative εHf values (−3 to −15), respectively. The younger U-Pb age population also presents two different groups of zircon grains according to Lu-Hf isotopes. The first group comprise Paleoproterozoic (1800–2300 Ma) ages, with highly negative εHf values, between −10 and −22, and the second group exhibits Mesoproterozoic ages (1200–1500 Ma), with increased juvenile εHf values (ca. 0 to −5). These Hf isotopes reinforce the presence of unexposed ancient crust in this region. The oldest U-Pb age population resembles the late stages of Grenville Orogeny and the Rodinia Supercontinent geotectonic activity mostly represented by magmatic rocks, which are widely present in the basement of northern Mozambique. The juvenile Hf-isotope signature with an older age component is associated to rocks generated from subduction processes with crust assimilation by continental arcs, which we correlate to rocks of the Nampula Complex, south and east of the Moatize-Minjova Basin. The U-Pb ages between 900 and 700 Ma were correlated to the calc-alkaline magmatism registered in the Guro Suite, related to the breakup phase of Rodinia, and mark the western limit of the Moatize-Minjova rift basin together with the Mungari Nappe and Chacocoma Granite, also probable sources. The εHf-isotopic signature (ca. −23 to 0) with Meso- and Paleoproterozoic Hf model ages of these zircons suggest assimilation of older crust by the Guro Suite continental arc. The Late Neoproterozoic - Cambrian U-Pb ages (ca. 700-490 Ma) comprise the wide interval of high-grade metamorphism, klippen and plutonism related to the Pan-African Orogeny. Hf-isotope pattern indicate high remelting of the older Mesoproterozoic and Paleoproterozoic crust. These ages correspond to magmatic and granulite metamorphic ages of the Monapo and Mugeba klippen, Nampula Complex and Guro Suite/Mungari Nappe/Chacocoma Granite rocks. The data suggests that these units were main source areas for the sediments of the Matinde Formation. The main Cambrian ages are related to the late stages of Pan-African Orogeny, marked by crustal delamination in NE Mozambique that was responsible for an extensive crustal partial melting associated to high-grade granulitic metamorphism and generation of large granitic plutons. The Nampula Complex was probably a large geotectonic entity in the Late Mesoproterozoic and reworked during the Pan-African Orogeny. This evidence, added to the N-NW paleoflow of the Proto-Zambezi river and provenance data, suggests that the Nampula Complex, Guro Suite and its juxtaposed nappes formed a high ground source area for fluvial sediments that fills the Moatize-Minjova Basin. Permian-Triassic rifting in northern Mozambique was induced by far-field stresses transferred from Gondwana margins. This stress disrupted the Nampula Complex reactivating Precambrian structures and fabrics, while the Jurassic-Cretaceous breakup of Gondwana and latter landscape evolution led to its actual morphology and configuration. The Serra das Araras Batholith (SAB), located at the southwest portion of the Paraíba do Sul Domain, Central Ribeira Belt, is composed of orthogneisses with peraluminous character. Combined LA-ICP-MS U-Pb and Lu-Hf isotopic analyses have been performed in zircon grains for a representative sample (SA-3H) of SAB. Data point to Rhyacian to Orosirian ( ca . 2.1–1.8 Ga) inherited zircon cores with positive ɛHf (t) values and Ediacaran U-Pb crystallization age (595 ± 8 Ma). A leucogranite dyke (SA-3D), 15–25 cm thick, which crosscuts SAB and a biotite-hornblende quartz diorite enclave (SA-06) have been analyzed. Crystallization ages for the three samples ( ca . 600-590 Ma) and ɛHf (t) values, ranging from −5.6 to −29.4 for Neoproterozoic zircon grains, indicate an Ediacaran crustal magmatism involving mid to lower crust anatexis and the reworking of Paleoproterozoic juvenile and crustal rocks. The genesis of Precambrian granitic batholiths related to supercontinent assembly is controversial, especially regarding their generating processes and tectonic settings. The present study focused on the Pelotas Batholith (Magmatic-arc domain) of the Dom Feliciano Belt, which comprises the southern segment of the Mantiqueira Province in southeastern South America. New U–Pb and Lu–Hf zircon data from plutonic rocks with evidence of magma mixing and mingling, as well as assimilation of wall rocks, suggest multi-stage magmatism related to flare-up episodes of intense magmatism, potentially triggered by changes in the tectonic setting. U–Pb zircon analyses yielded crystallization ages of granodioritic gneiss xenolith at 691.5 ± 7 Ma, microgranodiorite xenolith at 645.9 ± 3.7 Ma, host monzogranite at 634.4 ± 4.4 Ma, and intrusive syenogranite at 620.1 ± 4.7 Ma, all intruded by syenogranitic pegmatite at 606.9 ± 1.7 Ma. Other analyses were performed on calc-alkaline granite (633 ± 4 Ma) and peraluminous granite (609.6 ± 2.2 Ma). The Lu–Hf data highlights a model age interval ranging from 1.7 to 1.3 Ga with εNd values between −4 and 1, except for the pegmatite sample which also includes Paleoproterozoic and Archean model ages (3.3-1.6 Ga) and εNd values between −33 and −1. Furthermore, the acquired data, together with the gathered dataset Dom Feliciano Belt granites, emphasizes a contribution from slightly juvenile to crustal sources, with model ages ranging primarily from Statherian-Orosirian to Mesoproterozoic. The Porongos Group is the major component of a fold and thrust belt located in the central portion of the Dom Feliciano Belt in the Sul-Riograndense Shield, Brazil. In this paper, the variations in composition of sediments and the depositional time are presented. Major and trace elements indicate that Porongos Group is composed mostly of immature sediments derived from intermediate felsic sources with minor contribution from mature recycled sources. U–Pb SHRIMP ages for a chlorite schist (sample 300) exhibit a proeminent population of 570–800 Ma, subordinate population of 1800–2250 Ma and minor population of 1200 Ma, whereas for a schist (sample 198) the main population is 1050–1500 and minor populations are 2040–2300 and 580–800 Ma. The εHf values of Neoproterozoic grains indicate variable degrees of crustal reworking (εHf = −18 to −4) with three main T DM model ages (2.2, 1.8, 1.5 Ga). The Paleoproterozoic grains include a few Archean (3.2–2.5 Ga) T DM ages. The trace elements of all analyzed detrital zircon grains reflect continental crust origin. According to the data set, the sediments of the Porongos Group were derived from locally eroded granitic rocks of the Dom Feliciano Belt and from the uplifted Paleoproterozoic basement (La Plata Craton). Further analytical signal and total magnetic field maps delimit regionally the shape and extension of the Porongos fold and thrust belt and includes the Capané region. Thick quartzites record significant information on cratonic environments during long geological periods. The capacity to resist weathering and deformation turn the quartzite covers especially useful in the provenance studies of Precambrian basins. Provenance of 194 detrital zircon grains from two samples of thick quartzite cover on the Paleoproterozoic Encantadas Complex displays mostly Paleoproterozoic (95%) and minor Archean (5%) sources. The results indicate that sediments were derived from the La Plata Craton with the maximum depositional age at 2.03 Ga possibly up to 1.7 Ga. In comparison, the adjacent Porongos Group has provenance data of 61 detrital zircon grains indicating mostly Mesoproterozoic (69%), subordinately Paleoproterozoic (26%) and minor Archean ages (5%). Considering previous published data, the Porongos Group is Ediacaran in age and probably chronocorrelated with sedimentary basins from the Tandilia Belt (Argentina). Neoproterozoic volcanic and subvolcanic rhyolitic systems in southernmost Brazil are correlated with acid magmatism linked to different petrotectonic associations of the Sul-Rio-Grandense Shield. A portion of this volcanism in the Dom Feliciano Belt is associated with the Pelotas Batholith, which resulted from magmatic episodes associated with the Ediacaran post-collisional evolution of southern Brazil. Ana Dias Rhyolite is the main subvolcanic occurrence of this volcanism that took place in the Quitéria region, in the central part of Rio Grande do Sul State. The acid magmatism has been commonly associated with the most differentiated granite suite phases during the final stages of emplacement of the Pelotas Batholith. The Ana Dias Rhyolite is characterized as an intrusive body with rocks that present a porphyritic to seriated texture and a gradational variation to fine-grained equigranular rocks. New zircon U–Pb dating indicates crystallization age of 581.9 ± 1.9 Ma for the Ana Dias Rhyolite. Geochemistry data characterize the rhyolites as belonging to the alkaline series; they present a metaluminous to peraluminous character; elevated SiO 2 and alkali concentrations, high FeOt/FeOt + MgO ratios and agpaitic index; and low Al 2 O 3 , CaO, and MgO contents. The Zr, Rb, Y, Nb, and Ga concentrations are moderate when compared with the relatively low Ba and Sr contents. These geochemistry characteristics are common in acid magmas with alkaline affinity. The behavior of certain trace elements and REE demonstrate enrichment in more incompatible elements, in addition to the negative anomaly of Ba, the slight enrichment in Ce relative to adjacent elements, as well as the enrichment in K 2 O and Rb relative to Nb, suggesting magmas derived from mantle sources enriched in incompatible elements with some crustal contamination. The Passo Feio complex (PFC) is a sequence of metapelite, amphibolite, metavolcanic/metavolcanoclastic rocks, marble, calc-silicate rocks, quartzite and magnesium schist. It is part of the São Gabriel Terrane, a Neoproterozoic juvenile arc formed during the early stages of evolution of the Neoproterozoic Dom Feliciano Belt (DFB), in southern Brazil. This belt corresponds to the southernmost portion of the Mantiqueira Province, an important Neoproterozoic orogenic system exposed in the NNE direction along the southeastern coast of Brazil. The geotectonic significance of the original Passo Feio basin in the tectonic evolution of São Gabriel Terrene is not well understood. It has been considered as part of a passive margin sequence or as a back-arc sequence. Geochronological and isotopic data are very scarse for the Passo Feio rocks and this has hampered the better understanding of its significance in the Neoproterozoic tectonic evolution of southern Brazil. In the present study the age and significance of metasedimentary rocks of the PFC were investigated. The provenance study was carried out in four metapelite samples from the southern and northern Passo Feio complex, using U-Pb dating of detrital zircon. The results showed varied provenance patterns and zircon ages range from 3637 to 803 Ma. Paleo- and Mesoproterozoic detrital zircon grains are present in all samples, but an important Neoproterozoic population has been identified in one of them. 3.5 Ga old zircon grains form the oldest population of detrital zircon ever reported in southern Brazil. Paleoproterozoic/Archean terranes within the Rio de la Plata Craton may represent the main source of detrital sediments and this suggests that part of the Passo Feio complex might have been a passive margin sequence, developed along the northeastern margin of that paleocontinent. However, the presence of a Neoproterozoic zircon population is not consistent with derivation solely from the craton and indicates contribution from younger sources, such as the Neoproterozoic São Gabriel Arc itself. This Neoproterozoic zircon population with ages ranging from 948 to 803 Ma, suggests that the onset of the magmatic/tectonic evolution of the São Gabriel Arc might have started as early ca. 0.95 Ma. Two ash fall beds (tonstein) sampled from the post-glacial Permian deposits of the Paraná Basin have provided new U–Pb radiometric age constraints for this stratigraphic interval. The zircon grains were recovered from tonstein layers interbedded with fine-grained and carbonaceous lithologies in the middle portion of the Rio Bonito Formation. In both samples, the dominant population is interpreted as generated by explosive volcanism, as having formed immediately before the eruption. Based on 238 U/ 206 Pb, the selected zircon grains from the dominant population have weighted mean ages of 290.6 ± 2.8 Ma and 281.7 ± 3.2 Ma, corresponding to the Sakmarian and Kungurian ages in the Cisuralian epoch, respectively. These ages constrain the time of the deposition of the tonstein horizons and have important stratigraphic implications for the Late Paleozoic evolution of both the Paraná Basin and the southwestern region of Gondwana. The results presented here and the radiometric data already published suggest that deposition of the post-glacial coal-bearing deposits of the Rio Bonito Formation was probably initiated before the Early Permian. Abstract: The Lower Permian sedimentary succession of the Paraná Basin in southernmost Brazil has an overall transgressive sedimentation regime, recorded by a clear retrogradation of the facies belt. However, important depositional strike-orientated variations and regional inversions occur in the sedimentation regime along the paleo-shoreline (i.e., along-strike) of the basin. At the regional scale, a huge source area was uplifted by the end of the Artinskian in the north and caused regression; the southern part of the study area increasingly was transgressed by the epicontinental sea (= regional inversion). This important tectonic overprint on the stratigraphic signature of the basin’s infill has a tectonic origin. The variable sedimentation regime along the paleo-shoreline is controlled by the structural framework of the basement, which is formed by several crustal blocks with different responses to tectonic strain induced by terrain accretion on the occidental margin of Gondwana during the Permian. Stratigraphic data indicate that during the Early Permian, there were at least two differential subsidence and uplift events, one by the end of the Sakmarian–Artinskian and another during the Late Artinskian–Kungurian. We present new U-Pb zircon ages and Sm-Nd-Pb isotopic data for volcanic and hypabyssal acid rocks from the northernmost exposure of the Acampamento Velho Formation in the NW portion of the Sul-Rio-Grandense Shield, Brazil. The first volcanic episode, grouped in the high-Ti rhyolites from the Tupanci hill, shows age of 579 ± 5.6 Ma, which is in agreement with the post-collisional Acampamento Velho Formation volcanism in the Bom Jardim Group of the Camaquã Basin. A poorly constrained age of 558 +/- 39 Ma was obtained for rhyolites from the low-Ti group at the Picados Hill, which may indicate a younger acid volcanism, or a greater time span for the volcanism of the Acampamento Velho Formation in southernmost Brazil. Regarding magmatic sources, Sm/Nd isotopic data coupled to Pb isotopes and a review of trace element geochemistry indicate different amounts of Paleoproterozoic (Dom Feliciano, Pinheiro Machado Suite) to Neoproterozoic (Rio Vacacaí terrane) lower crust melting. Our data, coupled with literature data, contribute to a better understanding of the stratigraphic evolution for the Neoproterozoic post-collisional volcanic successions of the Camaquã Basin in the Sul-Rio-Grandense Shield. Ediacaran volcanic sequences in southernmost Brazil are related to intense post-collisional magmatism of the Brasiliano Orogeny. A portion of this volcanism occurs in the oriental Ramada Plateau located in the center part of the Rio Grande Sul State and is correlated with Hilário and Acampamento Velho formations. The first one is represented dominantly by lava flows and dikes of shoshonitic andesitic composition, besides of volcanogenic sedimentary deposits. The acid rocks of the Acampamento Velho Formation are expressive in the area, comprising high-silica ignimbrites, usually densely welded. Dikes and domes are common too and rhyolitic lava flows occur at the top and intercalated to ignimbrites in the middle of the sequence. The acid rock association has a sodic alkaline affinity. In this unit we mapped a subvolcanic sill of trachyte showing evidence for magma mixing with the rhyolitic magma. It has sodic alkaline affinity, and FeOt/FeO + MgO ratios and agpaitic index lower than those recorded in the rhyolites/ignimbrites. The Acampamento Velho Formation includes in this area, subordinately, basalts as àà flows and dikes intercalated with acid rocks. They have sodic alkaline nature and characteristics of intraplate basic rocks. New zircon U-Pb dating indicates crystallization age of 560 ± 2 Ma in a densely welded ignimbrite, 560 ± 14 Ma for a mafic trachyte and 562 ± 2 Ma for a subvolcanic rhyolite. The sodic alkaline rocks in this region evolved by fractional crystallization processes and magma mixing with major crustal contribution at approximately 560 Ma. The presence of sand injections has been shown to enhance the likelihood of hydrocarbon traps within siliciclastic successions. Through the development of large interconnected networks of sills and dykes, sand injection complexes provide a volume of porous and permeable rocks within the low permeability host units. Overall, the formation of sand injection complexes requires extensive fracturing and hydrofracturing, which can be particularly pronounced when sand injections are coupled with brittle tectonic deformation. In some circumstances, this process may threaten the integrity of the reservoir top seal thereby preventing further hydrocarbon accumulation. Studying exceptional exposures along the coastal area of Santa Cruz in California, we report evidence for top seal failure associated with injection episodes. Two distinct sand injection episodes are proposed. The first event, datable to the Late Miocene, resulted in large volumes of sand being emplaced within the top-seal units, and was followed by accumulation of hydrocarbons within the newly injected sandstones. Later, a series of brittle tectonic events, associated with the San Andreas/San Gregorio Fault System, caused remobilization and accumulation of sand along newly formed fault planes. Our case study documents this combination of pervasive brittle deformation and sandstone injection along fault structures, which can ultimately disrupt the integrity of a host unit leading top seal failure and leakage of hydrocarbons. • Evolution of the Santa Cruz petroleum system was accompanied by sandstone intrusion. • Sandstone-filled faults are consistent with tectonics of the San Andreas Fault. • Hydrocarbon leakage occurred through fractures and sandstone-filled faults. During the Late Palaeozoic, the Gondwana supercontinent formed an extensive Southern Hemisphere landmass that was affected by multiple glacial episodes, known collectively as the Late Palaeozoic Ice Age (LPIA). This resulted in the deposition of glacial, periglacial and deglacial sediments over much of the supercontinent. The Mississippian to early Pennsylvanian phase of glaciation is widely represented along the western margin of Gondwana. This constitutes one of the largest glaciations of the Phanerozoic in terms of its recorded extent and the widespread erosional hiatus it produced in the stratigraphic record. It was this mid Carboniferous glaciation, recorded in the Paganzo Basin of NW Argentina, that carved most of the paleovalleys and paleofjords present there. We report new U-Pb zircon ages from a single glacial succession (Guandacol Formation) of 326 ± 3 Ma and 320 ± 5 Ma, that in comparison with neighbouring dated sequences allow for the first time a reliable estimate of the timing and duration of glacial cycles. Palynological studies of these glacial-deglacial events yielded palynoassemblages of the MQ (Late Visean) and DMa (Sepukhovian-Bashkirian) Palynozones. The Carboniferous glacially-related strata and glacial cycles of the Paganzo Basin are compared here with equivalent units of the Paraná Basin of SE Brazil, suggesting a similar climate record for most of western Gondwana. We propose a new correlation between these two basins. The new U-Pb zircon ages reported here indicate that a regional glacial peak occurred almost coincident with the Mississippian-Pennsylvanian boundary, suggesting that the ensuing postglacial transgression is the best regional marker to differentiate the Mississippian and Pennsylvanian as it forms an identifiable interbasinal horizon. The biostratigraphic and chronostratigraphic comparison with other LPIA successions from South America reinforces that the First Appearance Datum of monosaccate pollen grains occurs in the late Serpukhovian.
