We present H-band (1.65 $\mu$m) and SOFIA HAWC+ 154 $\mu$m polarization observations of the low-mass core L483. Our H-band observations reveal a magnetic field that is overwhelmingly in the E-W direction, which is approximately parallel to the bipolar outflow that is observed in scattered IR light and in single-dish $^{12}$CO observations. From our 154 $\mu$m data, we infer a $\sim$ 45$^{\circ}$ twist in the magnetic field within the inner 5" (1000 au) of L483. We compare these new observations with published single-dish 350 $\mu$m polarimetry and find that the 10,000 au scale H-band data match the smaller scale 350 $\mu$m data, indicating that the collapse of L483 is magnetically regulated on these larger scales. We also present high-resolution 1.3 mm ALMA data of L483 which reveals it is a close binary star with a separation of 34 au. The plane of the binary of L483 is observed to be approximately parallel to the twisted field in the inner 1000 au. Comparing this result to the $\sim$ 1000 au protostellar envelope, we find that the envelope is roughly perpendicular to the 1000 au HAWC+ field. Using the data presented, we speculate that L483 initially formed as a wide binary and the companion star migrated to its current position, causing an extreme shift in angular momentum thereby producing the twisted magnetic field morphology observed. Observations indicate that molecular clouds are strongly magnetized, and that magnetic fields influence the formation of stars. A key observation supporting the conclusion that molecular clouds are significantly magnetized is that the orientation of their internal structure is closely related to that of the magnetic field. At low column densities the structure aligns parallel with the field, whereas at higher column densities, the gas structure is typically oriented perpendicular to magnetic fields, with a transition at visual extinctions $A_V\gtrsim{}3~\rm{}mag$. Here we use far-infrared polarimetric observations from the HAWC+ polarimeter on SOFIA to report the discovery of a further transition in relative orientation, i.e., a return to parallel alignment at $A_V\gtrsim{}21~\rm{}mag$ in parts of the Serpens South cloud. This transition appears to be caused by gas flow and indicates that magnetic supercriticality sets in near $A_V\gtrsim{}21~\rm{}mag$, allowing gravitational collapse and star cluster formation to occur even in the presence of relatively strong magnetic fields., Comment: 16 pages, 4 figures, Published in Nature Astronomy (August 2020). The role played by magnetic field during star formation is an important topic in astrophysics. We investigate the correlation between the orientation of star-forming cores (as defined by the core major axes) and ambient magnetic field directions in 1) a 3D MHD simulation, 2) synthetic observations generated from the simulation at different viewing angles, and 3) observations of nearby molecular clouds. We find that the results on relative alignment between cores and background magnetic field in synthetic observations slightly disagree with those measured in fully 3D simulation data, which is partly because cores identified in projected 2D maps tend to coexist within filamentary structures, while 3D cores are generally more rounded. In addition, we examine the progression of magnetic field from pc- to core-scale in the simulation, which is consistent with the anisotropic core formation model that gas preferably flow along the magnetic field toward dense cores. When comparing the observed cores identified from the GBT Ammonia Survey (GAS) and Planck polarization-inferred magnetic field orientations, we find that the relative core-field alignment has a regional dependence among different clouds. More specifically, we find that dense cores in the Taurus molecular cloud tend to align perpendicular to the background magnetic field, while those in Perseus and Ophiuchus tend to have random (Perseus) or slightly parallel (Ophiuchus) orientations with respect to the field. We present mapping results of two prestellar cores, L1544 and L694-2, embedded in filamentary clouds in C$^{18}$O (3-2), $^{13}$CO (3-2), $^{12}$CO (3-2), HCO$^+$ (4-3), and H$^{13}$CO$^+$ (4-3) with the JCMT telescope to examine the role of the filamentary structures in the formation of dense cores in the clouds, with new distance estimates for L1544 ($175_{-3}^{+4}$ pc) and L694-2 ($203_{-7}^{+6}$ pc). From these observations, we found that the non-thermal velocity dispersion of two prestellar cores and their surrounding clouds are smaller than or comparable to the sound speed. This may indicate that the turbulence has already been dissipated for both filaments and cores during their formation time. We also found a $\lambda/4$ shift between the periodic oscillations in the velocity and the column density distributions implying the possible presence of gravitational core-forming flow motion along the axis of the filament. The mass accretion rates due to these flow motions are estimated to be 2-3 M$_\odot$ Myr$^{-1}$, being comparable to that for Serpens cloud but much smaller than those for the Hub filaments, cluster, or high mass forming filaments by 1 or 2 order of magnitudes. From this study, we suggest that the filaments in our targets might be formed from the shock-compression of colliding clouds, and then the cores are formed by gravitational fragmentation of the filaments to evolve to the prestellar stage. We present the results on the physical properties of filaments and dense cores in IC 5146, as a part of the TRAO FUNS project. We carried out On-The-Fly mapping observations using the Taeduk Radio Astronomy Observatory (TRAO) 14m telescope covering about 1 square degree of the area of IC 5146 using various molecular lines. We identified 14 filaments (24 in total, including sub-filaments) from the C$^{18}$O (1-0) data cube and 22 dense cores from the $\rm N_{2}H^{+}$ (1-0) data. We examined the filaments' gravitational criticality, turbulence properties, accretion rate from filaments to dense cores, and relative evolutionary stages of cores. Most filaments in IC 5146 are gravitationally supercritical within the uncertainty, and most dense cores are formed in them. We found that dense cores in the hubs show a systemic velocity shift of ~0.3 km/s between the $\rm N_{2}H^{+}$ and C$^{18}$O gas. Besides, these cores are subsonic or transonic, while the surrounding filament gas is transonic or supersonic, indicating that the cores in the hubs are likely formed by the turbulence dissipation in the colliding turbulent filaments and the merging is still ongoing. We estimated the mass accretion rate of $15 - 35~M_{\odot}~\rm Myr^{-1}$ from the filaments to the dense cores, and the required time scales to collect the current core mass are consistent with the lifetime of the dense cores. Dynamical studies of dense structures within molecular clouds often conclude that the most massive clumps contain too little kinetic energy for virial equilibrium, unless they are magnetized to an unexpected degree. This raises questions about how such a state might arise, and how it might persist long enough to represent the population of massive clumps. In an effort to re-examine the origins of this conclusion, we use ammonia line data from the Green Bank Ammonia Survey and Planck-calibrated dust emission data from Herschel to estimate the masses and kinetic and gravitational energies for dense clumps in the Gould Belt clouds. We show that several types of systematic error can enhance the appearance of low kinetic-to-gravitational energy ratios: insufficient removal of foreground and background material; ignoring the kinetic energy associated with velocity differences across a resolved cloud; and over-correcting for stratification when evaluating the gravitational energy. Using an analysis designed to avoid these errors, we find that the most massive Gould Belt clumps harbor virial motions, rather than sub-virial ones. One of the most important and well-established empirical results in astronomy is the Kennicutt-Schmidt (KS) relation between the density of interstellar gas and the rate at which that gas forms stars. A tight correlation between these quantities has long been measured at galactic scales. More recently, using surveys of YSOs, a KS relationship has been found within molecular clouds relating the surface density of star formation to the surface density of gas; however, the scaling of these laws varies significantly from cloud to cloud. Magnetic and energetic properties are presented for 17 dense cores within a few hundred pc of the Sun. Their plane-of-sky field strengths are estimated from the dispersion of polarization directions, following Davis, Chandrasekhar and Fermi (DCF). Their ratio of mass to magnetic critical mass is 0.5-3, indicating nearly critical field strengths. The field strength B_pos is correlated with column density N as B_pos~N^p, where p=1.05+-0.08, and with density n as B_pos~n^q, where q=0.66+-0.05. These magnetic properties are consistent with those derived from Zeeman studies (Crutcher et al. 2010), with less scatter. Relations between virial mass M_V, magnetic critical mass M_B, and Alfven amplitude sigma_B/B match the observed range of M/M_B for cores observed to be nearly virial, with M/M_V=0.5-2, with moderate Alfven amplitudes, and with sigma_B/B=0.1-0.4. The B-N and B-n correlations in the DCF and Zeeman samples can be explained when such bound, Alfvenic, and nearly-critical cores have central concentration and spheroidal shape. For these properties, B~N because M/M_B is nearly constant compared to the range of N, and B~n^(2/3) because M^(1/3) is nearly constant compared to the range of n^(2/3). The observed core fields which follow B~n^(2/3) need not be much weaker than gravity, in contrast to core fields which follow B~n^(2/3) due to spherical contraction at constant mass (Mestel 1966). CMZoom survey observations with the Submillimeter Array are analyzed to describe the virial equilibrium (VE) and star-forming potential of 755 clumps in 22 clouds in the Central Molecular Zone (CMZ) of the Milky Way. In each cloud, nearly all clumps follow the column-density-mass trend N~M^s, where s = 0.38 +- 0.03 is near the pressure-bounded limit s=1/3. This trend is expected when gravitationally unbound clumps in VE have similar velocity dispersion and external pressure. Nine of these clouds also harbor one or two distinctly more massive clumps. These properties allow a VE model of bound and unbound clumps in each cloud, where the most massive clump has the VE critical mass. These models indicate that 213 clumps have velocity dispersion 1-2 km s^(-1), mean external pressure 0.5-4 x 10^8 cm^(-3) K, bound clump fraction 0.06, and typical virial parameter alpha=4-15. These mostly unbound clumps may be in VE with their turbulent cloud pressure, possibly driven by inflow from the galactic bar. In contrast, most Sgr B2 clumps are bound according to their associated sources and N-M trends. When the CMZ clumps are combined into mass distributions, their typical power-law slope is analyzed with a stopped accretion model. It also indicates that most clumps are unbound and cannot grow significantly, due to their similar time scales of accretion and dispersal, ~0.2 Myr. The CS molecule is known to be absorbed onto dust in the cold and dense conditions, causing it to get significantly depleted in the central region of cores. This study is aimed to investigate the depletion of the CS molecule using the optically thin C$^{34}$S molecular line observations. We mapped five prestellar cores, L1544, L1552, L1689B, L694-2, and L1197 using two molecular lines, C$^{34}$S $(J=2-1)$ and N$_2$H$^+$ $(J=1-0)$ with the NRO 45-m telescope, doubling the number of cores where the CS depletion was probed using C$^{34}$S. In most of our targets, the distribution of C$^{34}$S emission shows features that suggest that the CS molecule is generally depleted in the center of the prestellar cores. The radial profile of the CS abundance with respect to H$_2$ directly measured from the CS emission and the Herschel dust emission indicates that the CS molecule is depleted by a factor of $\sim$3 toward the central regions of the cores with respect to their outer regions. The degree of the depletion is found to be even more enhanced by an order of magnitude when the contaminating effect introduced by the presence of CS molecules in the surrounding envelope that lie along the line-of-sight is removed. Except for L1197 which is classified as relatively the least evolved core in our targets based on its observed physical parameters, we found that the remaining four prestellar cores are suffering from significant CS depletion at their central region regardless of the relative difference in their evolutionary status., 20 pages, 9 figures, Accepted for publication in ApJ

Context : Star formation takes place in cold dense cores in molecular clouds. Earlier observations have found that dense cores exhibit subsonic non-thermal velocity dispersions. In contrast, CO observations show that the ambient large-scale cloud is warmer and has supersonic velocity dispersions. Aims : We aim to study the ammonia ($\rm NH_3$) molecular line profiles with exquisite sensitivity towards the coherent cores in L1688 in order to study their kinematical properties in unprecedented detail. Methods : We used $\rm NH_3$ (1,1) and (2,2) data from the first data release (DR1) in the Green Bank Ammonia Survey (GAS). We first smoothed the data to a larger beam of 1' to obtain substantially more extended maps of velocity dispersion and kinetic temperature, compared to the DR1 maps. We then identified the coherent cores in the cloud and analysed the averaged line profiles towards the cores. We present ALMA maps of the starless molecular cloud core Ophiuchus/H-MM1 in the lines of deuterated ammonia (ortho-NH2D), methanol (CH3OH), and sulphur monoxide (SO). The dense core is seen in NH2D emission, whereas the CH3OH and SO distributions form a halo surrounding the core. Because methanol is formed on grain surfaces, its emission highlights regions where desorption from grains is particularly efficient. Methanol and sulphur monoxide are most abundant in a narrow zone that follows the eastern side of the core. This side is sheltered from the stronger external radiation field coming from the west. We show that photodissociation on the illuminated side can give rise to an asymmetric methanol distribution, but that the stark contrast observed in H-MM1 is hard to explain without assuming enhanced desorption on the shaded side. The region of the brightest emission has a wavy structure that rolls up at one end. This is the signature of Kelvin-Helmholtz instability occurring in sheared flows. We suggest that in this zone, methanol and sulphur are released as a result of grain-grain collisions induced by shear vorticity., Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal

Star formation primarily occurs in filaments where magnetic fields are expected to be dynamically important. The largest and densest filaments trace spiral structure within galaxies. Over a dozen of these dense ($\sim$10$^4$\,cm$^{-3}$) and long ($>$10\,pc) filaments have been found within the Milky Way, and they are often referred to as "bones." Until now, none of these bones have had their magnetic field resolved and mapped in their entirety. We introduce the SOFIA legacy project FIELDMAPS which has begun mapping $\sim$10 of these Milky Way bones using the HAWC+ instrument at 214\,$��$m and 18$\farcs$2 resolution. Here we present a first result from this survey on the $\sim$60\,pc long bone G47. Contrary to some studies of dense filaments in the Galactic plane, we find that the magnetic field is often not perpendicular to the spine (i.e., the center-line of the bone). Fields tend to be perpendicular in the densest areas of active star formation and more parallel or random in other areas. The average field is neither parallel or perpendicular to the Galactic plane nor the bone. The magnetic field strengths along the spine typically vary from $\sim$20 to $\sim$100\,$��$G. Magnetic fields tend to be strong enough to suppress collapse along much of the bone, but for areas that are most active in star formation, the fields are notably less able to resist gravitational collapse., Accepted to ApJL; typo in author list metadata corrected

Low-mass stars form from the gravitational collapse of dense molecular cloud cores. While a general consensus picture of this collapse process has emerged, many details on how mass is transferred from cores to stars remain poorly understood. MASSES (Mass Assembly of Stellar Systems and their Evolution with the SMA), an SMA large project, has just finished surveying all 74 Class 0 and Class I protostars in the nearby Perseus molecular cloud to reveal the interplay between fragmentation, angular momentum, and outflows in regulating accretion and setting the final masses of stars. Scientific highlights are presented in this proceedings, covering the topics of episodic accretion, hierarchical thermal Jeans fragmentation, angular momentum transfer, envelope grain sizes, and disk evolution.

The determination of the specific angular momentum radial profile, $j(r)$, in the early stages of star formation is crucial to constrain star and circumstellar disk formation theories. The specific angular momentum is directly related to the largest Keplerian disk possible, and it could constrain the angular momentum removal mechanism. We determine $j(r)$ towards two Class 0 objects and a first hydrostatic core candidate in the Perseus cloud, which is consistent across all three sources and well fit with a single power-law relation between 800 and 10,000\,au: $j_{fit}(r)=10^{-3.60\pm0.15}\left(r/\textrm{1,000au}\right)^{1.80\pm0.04}$ km s$^{-1}$ pc. This power-law relation is in between solid body rotation ($\propto r^2$) and pure turbulence ($\propto r^{1.5}$). This strongly suggests that even at 1,000\,au, the influence of the dense core's initial level of turbulence or the connection between core and the molecular cloud is still present. The specific angular momentum at 10,000\,au is $\approx3\times$ higher than previously estimated, while at 1,000\,au it is lower by $2\times$. We do not find a region of conserved specific angular momentum, although it could still be present at a smaller radius. We estimate an upper limit to the largest Keplerian disk radius of 60\,au, which is small but consistent with published upper limits. Finally, these results suggest that more realistic initial conditions for numerical simulations of disk formation are needed. Some possible solutions include: a) use a larger simulation box to include some level of driven turbulence or connection to the parental cloud, or b) incorporate the observed $j(r)$ to setup the dense core kinematics initial conditions., Accepted to ApJ, 13 pages, 7 figures

"TRAO FUNS" is a project to survey Gould Belt's clouds in molecular lines. This paper presents its first results on the central region of the California molecular cloud, L1478. We performed On-The-Fly mapping observations using the Taedeok Radio Astronomy Observatory (TRAO) 14m single dish telescope equipped with a 16 multi-beam array covering $\sim$1.0 square degree area of this region using C$^{18}$O (1-0) mainly tracing low density cloud and about 460 square arcminute area using N$_{2}$H$^{+}$ (1-0) mainly tracing dense cores. CS (2-1) and SO $(3_{2}-2_{1})$ were also used simultaneously to map $\sim$440 square arcminute area of this region. We identified 10 filaments by applying the dendrogram technique to the C$^{18}$O data-cube and 8 dense N$_{2}$H$^{+}$ cores by using {\sc FellWalker}. Basic physical properties of filaments such as mass, length, width, velocity field, and velocity dispersion are derived. It is found that L1478 consists of several filaments with slightly different velocities. Especially the filaments which are supercritical are found to contain dense cores detected in N$_{2}$H$^{+}$. Comparison of non-thermal velocity dispersions derived from C$^{18}$O and N$_{2}$H$^{+}$ for the filaments and dense cores indicates that some of dense cores share similar kinematics with those of the surrounding filaments while several dense cores have different kinematics with those of their filaments. We present and release the full dataset for the Mass Assembly of Stellar Systems and their Evolution with the SMA (MASSES) survey. This survey used the Submillimeter Array (SMA) to image the 74 known protostars within the Perseus molecular cloud. The SMA was used in two array configurations to capture outflows for scales $>$30$^{\prime\prime}$ ($>$9000 au) and to probe scales down to $\sim$1$^{\prime\prime}$ ($\sim$300 au). The protostars were observed with the 1.3 mm and 850 $��$m receivers simultaneously to detect continuum at both wavelengths and molecular line emission from CO(2-1), $^{13}$CO(2-1), C$^{18}$O(2-1), N$_2$D$^+$(3-2), CO(3-2), HCO$^+$(4-3), and H$^{13}$CO$^+$(4-3). Some of the observations also used the SMA's recently upgraded correlator, SWARM, whose broader bandwidth allowed for several more spectral lines to be observed (e.g., SO, H$_2$CO, DCO$^+$, DCN, CS, CN). Of the main continuum and spectral tracers observed, 84% of the images and cubes had emission detected. The median C$^{18}$O(2-1) linewidth is $\sim$1.0 km s$^{-1}$, which is slightly higher than those measured with single-dish telescopes at scales of 3000-20000 au. Of the 74 targets, six are suggested to be first hydrostatic core candidates, and we suggest that L1451-mm is the best candidate. We question a previous continuum detection toward L1448 IRS2E. In the SVS13 system, SVS13A certainly appears to be the most evolved source, while SVS13C appears to be hotter and more evolved than SVS13B. The MASSES survey is the largest publicly available interferometric continuum and spectral line protostellar survey to date, and is largely unbiased as it only targets protostars in Perseus. We present the observation and analysis of newly discovered coherent structures in the L1688 region of Ophiuchus and the B18 region of Taurus. Using data from the Green Bank Ammonia Survey, we identify regions of high density and near-constant, almost-thermal velocity dispersion. We reveal 18 coherent structures are revealed, 12 in L1688 and 6 in B18, each of which shows a sharp “transition to coherence” in velocity dispersion around its periphery. The identification of these structures provides a chance to statistically study the coherent structures in molecular clouds. The identified coherent structures have a typical radius of 0.04 pc and a typical mass of 0.4 M ☉, generally smaller than previously known coherent cores identified by Goodman et al., Caselli et al., and Pineda et al. We call these structures “droplets.” We find that, unlike previously known coherent cores, these structures are not virially bound by self-gravity and are instead predominantly confined by ambient pressure. The droplets have density profiles shallower than a critical Bonnor–Ebert sphere, and they have a velocity (V LSR) distribution consistent with the dense gas motions traced by NH3 emission. These results point to a potential formation mechanism through pressure compression and turbulent processes in the dense gas. We present a comparison with a magnetohydrodynamic simulation of a star-forming region, and we speculate on the relationship of droplets with larger, gravitationally bound coherent cores, as well as on the role that droplets and other coherent structures play in the star formation process.

We present initial results from the K-band focal plane array Examinations of Young STellar Object Natal Environments (KEYSTONE) survey, a large project on the 100-m Green Bank Telescope mapping ammonia emission across eleven giant molecular clouds at distances of $0.9-3.0$ kpc (Cygnus X North, Cygnus X South, M16, M17, MonR1, MonR2, NGC2264, NGC7538, Rosette, W3, and W48). This data release includes the NH$_3$ (1,1) and (2,2) maps for each cloud, which are modeled to produce maps of kinetic temperature, centroid velocity, velocity dispersion, and ammonia column density. Median cloud kinetic temperatures range from $11.4\pm2.2$ K in the coldest cloud (MonR1) to $23.0\pm6.5$ K in the warmest cloud (M17). Using dendrograms on the NH$_3$ (1,1) integrated intensity maps, we identify 856 dense gas clumps across the eleven clouds. Depending on the cloud observed, $40-100\%$ of the clumps are aligned spatially with filaments identified in H$_2$ column density maps derived from SED-fitting of dust continuum emission. A virial analysis reveals that 523 of the 835 clumps ($\sim63\%$) with mass estimates are bound by gravity alone. We find no significant difference between the virial parameter distributions for clumps aligned with the dust-continuum filaments and those unaligned with filaments. In some clouds, however, hubs or ridges of dense gas with unusually high mass and low virial parameters are located within a single filament or at the intersection of multiple filaments. These hubs and ridges tend to host water maser emission, multiple 70$\mu$m-detected protostars, and have masses and radii above an empirical threshold for forming massive stars., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

We present 0.25 arcsec resolution (35 au) ALMA 1.3 mm dust polarization observations for 37 young stellar objects (YSOs) in the Ophiuchus cloud. These data encompass all the embedded protostars in the cloud and several Flat and Class II objects to produce the largest, homogeneous study of dust polarization on disk scales to date. The goal of this study is to study dust polarization down to disk scales. We find that 14/37 (38%) of the YSOs are detected in polarization. Nine of these sources have uniform polarization angles and four sources have azimuthal polarization. The sources with uniform polarization tend to have steeper inclinations (> 60 degree) than those with azimuthal polarization (< 60 degree). The majority (9/14) of the detected sources have polarization morphologies and disk properties consistent with dust self-scattering in optically thick disks. The remaining sources may be instead tracing magnetic fields. Their inferred field directions from rotating the polarization vectors by 90 degree are mainly poloidal or hourglass shaped. We find no evidence of a strong toroidal field component toward any of our disks. For the 23 YSOs that are undetected in polarization, roughly half of them have 3-sigma upper limits of < 2%. These sources also tend to have inclinations < 60 degree and they are generally compact. Since lower inclination sources tend to have azimuthal polarization, these YSOs may be undetected in polarization due to unresolved polarization structure within our beam. We propose that disks with inclinations > 60 degree are the best candidates for future polarization studies of dust self-scattering as these systems will generally show uniform polarization vectors that do not require very high resolution to resolve. We develop a new ''core field structure'' (CFS) model to predict the magnetic field strength and magnetic field fluctuation profile of dense cores using gas kinematics. We use spatially resolved observations of the nonthermal velocity dispersion from the Green Bank Ammonia survey along with column density maps from SCUBA-2 to estimate the magnetic field strength across seven dense cores located in the L1688 region of Ophiuchus. The CFS model predicts the profile of the relative field fluctuation, which is related to the observable dispersion in direction of the polarization vectors. Within the context of our model we find that all the cores have a transcritical mass-to-flux ratio., Comment: 18 pages, 13 figures, to appear in ApJ

We analyze high-quality stellar catalogs for 24 young and nearby (within 1 kpc) embedded clusters and present a catalogue of 32 groups which have a high concentration of protostars. The median effective radius of these groups is 0.17 pc. The median protostellar and pre-main sequence star surface densities are 46 M_{\odot} pc^{-2} and 11 M_{\odot} pc^{-2}, respectively. We estimate the age of these groups using a model of constant birthrate and random accretion stopping and find a median value of 0.25 Myr. Some groups in Aquila and Serpens, Corona Australia and Ophichus L1688 show high protostellar surface density and high molecular gas surface density, which seem to be undergoing vigorous star formation. These groups provide an excellent opportunity to study initial conditions of clustered star formation. Comparison of protostellar and pre-main-sequence stellar surface densities reveal continuous low-mass star formation of these groups over several Myr in some clouds. For groups with typical protostellar separations of less than 0.4 pc, we find that these separations agree well with the thermal Jeans fragmentation scale. On the other hand, for groups with typical protostellar separations larger than 0.4 pc, these separations are always larger than the associated Jeans length., 29 pages, 24 figures, to be published in ApJ

We present high-resolution (~ 35 au) ALMA Band 6 1.3 mm dust polarization observations of IRAS 16293. These observations spatially resolve the dust polarization across the two protostellar sources and toward the filamentary structures between them. The dust polarization and inferred magnetic field have complicated structures throughout the region. In particular, we find that the magnetic field is aligned parallel to three filamentary structures. We characterize the physical properties of the filamentary structure that bridges IRAS 16293A and IRAS 16293B and estimate a magnetic field strength of 23-78 mG using the Davis-Chandrasekhar-Fermi method. We construct a toy model for the bridge material assuming that the young stars dominate the mass and gravitational potential of the system. We find that the expected gas flow to each star is of comparable order to the Alfven speed, which suggests that the field may be regulating the gas flow. We also find that the bridging material should be depleted in ~ 1000 yr. If the bridge is part of the natal filament that formed the stars, then it must have accreted new material. Alternatively, the bridge could be a transient structure. Finally, we show that the 1.3 mm polarization morphology of the optically thick IRAS 16293B system is qualitatively similar to dust self-scattering. Based on similar polarization measurements at 6.9 mm, we propose that IRAS 16293B has produced a substantial population of large dust grains with sizes between 200 and 2000 um., Accepted to ApJ, 15 pages, 9 figures; minor corrections for typos

This paper presents our observational attempts to precisely measure the central mass of a proto-brown dwarf candidate, L328-IRS, in order to investigate whether L328-IRS is in the substellar mass regime. Observations were made for the central region of L328-IRS with the dust continuum and CO isotopologue line emission at ALMA band 6, discovering the detailed outflow activities and a deconvolved disk structure of a size of $\sim$87 AU $\times$ 37 AU. We investigated the rotational velocities as a function of the disk radius, finding that its motions between 130 AU and 60 AU are partially fitted with a Keplerian orbit by a stellar object of $\sim0.30 ~\rm\,M_\odot$, while the motions within 60 AU do not follow any Keplerian orbit at all. This makes it difficult to lead a reliable estimation of the mass of L328-IRS. Nonetheless, our ALMA observations were useful enough to well constrain the inclination angle of the outflow cavity of L328-IRS as $\sim 66^{\circ}$, enabling us to better determine the mass accretion rate of $\sim 8.9\times 10^{-7} \rm\,M_\odot~yr^{-1}$. From assumptions that the internal luminosity of L328-IRS is mostly due to this mass accretion process in the disk, or that L328-IRS has mostly accumulated the mass through this constant accretion rate during its outflow activity, its mass was estimated to be $\sim 0.012 - 0.023\rm\,M_\odot$, suggesting L328-IRS to be a substellar object. However, we leave our identification of L328-IRS as a proto-brown dwarf to be tentative because of various uncertainties especially regarding the mass accretion rate., Accepted in ApJ, 24 pages, 12 figures

We present a study of hierarchical structure in the Perseus molecular cloud, from the scale of the entire cloud ($\gtrsim$10 pc) to smaller clumps ($\sim$1 pc), cores ($\sim$0.05-0.1 pc), envelopes ($\sim$300-3000 AU) and protostellar objects ($\sim$15 AU). We use new observations from the Submillimeter Array (SMA) large project "Mass Assembly of Stellar Systems and their Evolution with the SMA (MASSES)" to probe the envelopes, and recent single-dish and interferometric observations from the literature for the remaining scales. This is the first study to analyze hierarchical structure over five scales in the same cloud complex. We compare the number of fragments with the number of Jeans masses in each scale to calculate the Jeans efficiency, or the ratio of observed to expected number of fragments. The velocity dispersion is assumed to arise either from purely thermal motions, or from combined thermal and non-thermal motions inferred from observed spectral line widths. For each scale, thermal Jeans fragmentation predicts more fragments than observed, corresponding to inefficient thermal Jeans fragmentation. For the smallest scale, thermal plus non-thermal Jeans fragmentation also predicts too many protostellar objects. However at each of the larger scales thermal plus non-thermal Jeans fragmentation predicts fewer than one fragment, corresponding to no fragmentation into envelopes, cores, and clumps. Over all scales, the results are inconsistent with complete Jeans fragmentation based on either thermal or thermal plus non-thermal motions. They are more nearly consistent with inefficient thermal Jeans fragmentation, where the thermal Jeans efficiency increases from the largest to the smallest scale., Accepted in ApJ. 21 pages, 15 figures, 4 tables

We present high resolution (~ 30 au) ALMA Band 6 dust polarization observations of VLA 1623. The VLA 1623 data resolve compact ~ 40 au inner disks around the two protobinary sources, VLA 1623-A and VLA 1623-B, and also an extended ~ 180 au ring of dust around VLA 1623-A. This dust ring was previously identified as a large disk in lower-resolution observations. We detect highly structured dust polarization toward the inner disks and the extended ring with typical polarization fractions ~ 1.7% and ~ 2.4%, respectively. The two components also show distinct polarization morphologies. The inner disks have uniform polarization angles aligned with their minor axes. This morphology is consistent with expectations from dust scattering. By contrast, the extended dust ring has an azimuthal polarization morphology not previously seen in lower-resolution observations. We find that our observations are well fit by a static, oblate spheroid model with a flux-frozen, poloidal magnetic field. We propose that the polarization traces magnetic grain alignment likely from flux freezing on large scales and magnetic diffusion on small scales. Alternatively, the azimuthal polarization may be attributed to grain alignment by the anisotropic radiation field. If the grains are radiatively aligned, then our observations indicate that large (~ 100 um) dust grains grow quickly at large angular extents. Finally, we identify significant proper motion of VLA 1623 using our observations and those in the literature. We present intensity-corrected Herschel maps at 100 um, 160 um, 250 um, 350 um, and 500 um for 56 isolated low-mass clouds. We determine the zero-point corrections for Herschel PACS and SPIRE maps from the Herschel Science Archive (HSA) using Planck data. Since these HSA maps are small, we cannot correct them using typical methods. Here, we introduce a technique to measure the zero-point corrections for small Herschel maps. We use radial profiles to identify offsets between the observed HSA intensities and the expected intensities from Planck. Most clouds have reliable offset measurements with this technique. In addition, we find that roughly half of the clouds have underestimated HSA-SPIRE intensities in their outer envelopes relative to Planck, even though the HSA-SPIRE maps were previously zero-point corrected. Using our technique, we produce corrected Herschel intensity maps for all 56 clouds and determine their line-of-sight average dust temperatures and optical depths from modified black body fits. The clouds have typical temperatures of ~ 14-20 K and optical depths of ~ 1e-5 - 1e-3. Across the whole sample, we find an anti-correlation between temperature and optical depth. We also find lower temperatures than what was measured in previous Herschel studies, which subtracted out a background level from their intensity maps to circumvent the zero-point correction. Accurate Herschel observations of clouds are key to obtain accurate density and temperature profiles. We present the Mass Assembly of Stellar Systems and their Evolution with the SMA (MASSES) survey, which uses the Submillimeter Array (SMA) interferometer to map the continuum and molecular lines for all 74 known Class 0/I protostellar systems in the Perseus molecular cloud. The primary goal of the survey is to observe an unbiased sample of young protostars in a single molecular cloud so that we can characterize the evolution of protostars. This paper releases the MASSES 1.3 mm data from the subcompact configuration ($\sim$4$^{\prime\prime}$ or $\sim$1000 au resolution), which is the SMA's most compact array configuration. We release both $uv$ visibility data and imaged data for the spectral lines CO(2-1),$^{13}$CO(2-1), C$^{18}$O(2-1), and N$_2$D$^+$(3-2), as well as for the 1.3 mm continuum. We identify the tracers that are detected toward each source. We also show example images of continuum and CO(2-1) outflows, analyze C$^{18}$O(2-1) spectra, and present data from the SVS 13 star-forming region. The calculated envelope masses from the continuum show a decreasing trend with bolometric temperature (a proxy for age). Typical C$^{18}$O(2-1) linewidths are 1.45 km s$^{-1}$, which is higher than the C$^{18}$O linewidths detected toward Perseus filaments and cores. We find that N$_2$D$^+$(3-2) is significantly more likely to be detected toward younger protostars. We show that the protostars in SVS 13 are contained within filamentary structures as traced by C$^{18}$O(2-1) and N$_2$D$^+$(3-2). We also present the locations of SVS 13A's high velocity (absolute line-of-sight velocities $>$150 km s$^{-1}$) red and blue outflow components. Recent progress is reviewed in describing the physical processes of star cluster formation, from the viewpoint of theoretical models and numerical simulations. In many studies, supersonic turbulent flows structure the gas into a network of clumps, filaments, and cores. Self-gravity drives star formation, moderated by turbulence, magnetic fields, and stellar feedback. Recent models and simulations describe the core mass function, the protostar mass function, and the star-formation rate. Several simulations indicate similar protostar birthrates, a mass advantage for firstborn protostars, and accretion rates that are superthermal and nearly constant. Recently observed core-filament systems with sonic line widths and parsec lengths present challenges for turbulent models.

We use Green Bank Ammonia Survey observations of NH$_3$ (1,1) and (2,2) emission with 32'' FWHM resolution from a ~ 10 pc$^{2}$ portion of the Cepheus-L1251 molecular cloud to identify hierarchical dense gas structures. Our dendrogram analysis of the NH$_3$ data results in 22 top-level structures, which reside within 13 lower-level, parent structures. The structures are compact (0.01 pc $\lesssim R_{eff} \lesssim$ 0.1 pc) and are spatially correlated with the highest H$_2$ column density portions of the cloud. We also compare the ammonia data to a catalog of dense cores identified by higher-resolution (18.2'' FWHM) Herschel Space Observatory observations of dust continuum emission from Cepheus-L1251. Maps of kinetic gas temperature, velocity dispersion, and NH$_3$ column density, derived from detailed modeling of the NH$_3$ data, are used to investigate the stability and chemistry of the ammonia-identified and Herschel-identified structures. We show that the dust and dense gas in the structures have similar temperatures, with median $T_{dust}$ and $T_K$ measurements of 11.7 $\pm$ 1.1 K and 10.3 $\pm$ 2.0 K, respectively. Based on a virial analysis, we find that the ammonia-identified structures are gravitationally dominated, yet may be in or near a state of virial equilibrium. Meanwhile, the majority of the Herschel-identified dense cores appear to be not bound by their own gravity and instead confined by external pressure. CCS $(2_0-1_0)$ and HC$_5$N $(9-8)$ emission from the region reveal broader line widths and centroid velocity offsets when compared to the NH$_3$ (1,1) emission in some cases, likely due to these carbon-based molecules tracing the turbulent outer layers of the dense cores., Accepted for publication in ApJ

We present new Submillimeter Array (SMA) observations of CO(2-1) outflows toward young, embedded protostars in the Perseus molecular cloud as part of the Mass Assembly of Stellar Systems and their Evolution with the SMA (MASSES) survey. For 57 Perseus protostars, we characterize the orientation of the outflow angles and compare them with the orientation of the local filaments as derived from $Herschel$ observations. We find that the relative angles between outflows and filaments are inconsistent with purely parallel or purely perpendicular distributions. Instead, the observed distribution of outflow-filament angles are more consistent with either randomly aligned angles or a mix of projected parallel and perpendicular angles. A mix of parallel and perpendicular angles requires perpendicular alignment to be more common by a factor of $\sim$3. Our results show that the observed distributions probably hold regardless of the protostar's multiplicity, age, or the host core's opacity. These observations indicate that the angular momentum axis of a protostar may be independent of the large-scale structure. In the standard picture for low-mass star formation, a dense molecular cloud undergoes gravitational collapse to form a protostellar system consisting of a new central star, a circumstellar disk, and a surrounding envelope of remaining material. The mass distribution of the system evolves as matter accretes from the large-scale envelope through the disk and onto the protostar. While this general picture is supported by simulations and indirect observational measurements, the specific timescales related to disk growth and envelope dissipation remain poorly constrained. In this paper we conduct a rigorous test of a method introduced by J{\o}rgensen et al. (2009) to obtain mass measurements of disks and envelopes around embedded protostars with observations that do not resolve the disk (resolution of $\sim$1000\,AU). Using unresolved data from the recent Mass Assembly of Stellar Systems and their Evolution with the SMA (MASSES) survey, we derive disk and envelope mass estimates for $59$ protostellar systems in the Perseus molecular cloud. We compare our results to independent disk mass measurements from the VLA Nascent Disk and Multiplicity (VANDAM) survey and find a strong linear correlation, suggesting that accurate disk masses can be measured from unresolved observations. Then, leveraging the size of the MASSES sample, we find no significant trend in protostellar mass distribution as a function of age, as approximated from bolometric temperatures. These results may indicate that the disk mass of a protostar is set near the onset of the Class 0 protostellar stage and remains roughly constant throughout the Class I protostellar stage., Comment: Accepted to ApJ

The newly discovered Massive Molecular Filament (MMF) G32.02+0.05 (~ 70 pc long, 105 M⊙) has been shaped and compressed by older generations of massive stars. The similarity of this filament in physical structure (density profile, temperature) to much smaller star-forming filaments, suggests that the mechanism to form such filaments may be a universal process. The densest portion of the filament, apparent as an Infrared Dark Cloud (IRDC) shows a range of massive star formation signatures throughout. We investigate the kinematics in this filament and find widespread inverse P cygni asymmetric line profiles. These line asymmetries are interpreted as a signature of large-scale radial collapse. Using line asymmetries observed with optically thick HCO+ (1-0) and optically thin H13CO+ (1-0) across a range of massive star forming regions in the filament, we estimate the global radial infall rate of the filament to range from a few 100 to a few 1000 M⊙ Myr−1 pc−1. At its current infall rate the densest portions of the cloud will more than double their current mass within a Myr.

Although surveys of infall motions in dense cores have been carried out for years, few surveys have focused on mapping infall across cores using multiple spectral line observations. To fill this gap, we present IRAM 30-m Telescope maps of N2H+(1-0), DCO+(2-1), DCO+(3-2), and HCO+(3-2) emission towards two prestellar cores (L492 and L694-2) and one protostellar core (L1521F). We find that the measured infall velocity varies with position across each core and choice of molecular line, likely as a result of radial variations in core chemistry and dynamics. Line-of-sight infall speeds estimated from DCO+(2-1) line profiles can decrease by 40-50 m/s when observing at a radial offset >= 0.04 pc from the core's dust continuum emission peak. Median infall speeds calculated from all observed positions across a core can also vary by as much as 65 m/s depending on the transition. These results show that while single-pointing, single-transition surveys of core infall velocities may be good indicators of whether a core is either contracting or expanding, the magnitude of the velocities they measure are significantly impacted by the choice of molecular line, proximity to the core center, and core evolutionary state., Accepted for publication in ApJ

We investigate the alignment between outflow axes in nine of the youngest binary/multiple systems in the Perseus Molecular Cloud. These systems have typical member spacing larger than 1000 AU. For outflow identification, we use 12CO(2-1) and 12CO(3-2) data from a large survey with the Sub- millimeter Array: Mass Assembly of Stellar Systems and their Evolution with the SMA (MASSES). The distribution of outflow orientations in the binary pairs is consistent with random or preferentially anti-aligned distributions, demonstrating that these outflows are misaligned. This result suggests that these systems are possibly formed in environments where the distribution of angular momentum is complex and disordered, and these systems do not come from the same co-rotating structures or from an initial cloud with aligned vectors of angular momentum., Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures, 3 tables. We present an Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) 106 GHz (Band 3) continuum survey of the complete population of dense cores in the Chamaeleon I molecular cloud. We detect a total of 24 continuum sources in 19 different target fields. All previously known Class 0 and Class I protostars in Chamaeleon I are detected, whereas all of the 56 starless cores in our sample are undetected. We show that the Spitzer+Herschel census of protostars in Chamaeleon I is complete, with the rate at which protostellar cores have been misclassified as starless cores calculated as, Accepted by ApJ

Filamentary structures are ubiquitous in molecular clouds, and have been recently argued to play an important role in regulating the size and mass of embedded clumps through fragmentation and mass accretion. Here, we reveal the dynamical state and fragmentation of filamentary molecular gas associated with the Serpens South protocluster through analysis of wide (~4 x 4 pc) observations of NH3 (1,1) and (2,2) inversion transitions with the Green Bank Telescope. Detailed modeling of the NH3 lines reveals that the kinematics of the cluster and surrounding filaments are complex. We identify hierarchical structure using a dendrogram analysis of the NH3 emission. The distance between neighbour structures that are embedded within the same parent structure is generally greater than expected from a spherical Jeans analysis, and is in better agreement with cylindrical fragmentation models. The NH3 line width-size relation is flat, and average gas motions are sub- or trans-sonic over all physical scales observed. Subsonic regions extend far beyond the typical 0.1 pc scale previously identified in star-forming cores. As a result, we find a strong trend of decreasing virial parameter with increasing structure mass in Serpens South. Extremely low virial parameters on the largest scales probed by our data suggest that the previously observed, ordered magnetic field is insufficient to support the region against collapse, in agreement with large radial infall motions previously measured toward some of the filaments. A more complex magnetic field configuration in the dense gas, however, may be able to support the filaments., Comment: 20 pages, 12 figures. Accepted to ApJ

Column density (N) PDFs serve as a powerful tool to characterize the physical processes that influence the structure of molecular clouds. Star-forming clouds can best be characterized by lognormal PDFs for the lower N range and a power-law tail for higher N, commonly attributed to turbulence and self-gravity and/or pressure, respectively. We report here on PDFs obtained from observations of 12CO, 13CO, C18O, CS, and N2H+ in the Cygnus X North region and compare to a PDF derived from dust observations with the Herschel satellite. The PDF of 12CO is lognormal for Av~1-30, but is cut for higher Av due to optical depth effects. The PDFs of C18O and 13CO are mostly lognormal up for Av~1-15, followed by excess up to Av~40. Above that value, all CO PDFs drop, most likely due to depletion. The high density tracers CS and N2H+ exhibit only a power law distribution between Av~15 and 400, respectively. The PDF from dust is lognormal for Av~3-15 and has a power-law tail up to Av~500. Absolute values for the molecular line column densities are, however, rather uncertain due to abundance and excitation temperature variations. Taken the dust PDF face value, we 'calibrate' the molecular line PDF of CS to the one of the dust and determined an abundance [CS]/[H2] of 10^-9. The slopes of the power-law tails of the CS, N2H+, and dust PDFs are consistent with free-fall collapse of filaments and clumps. A quasi static configuration of filaments and clumps can possibly also account for the observed N-PDFs, as long as they have a sufficiently condensed density structure and external ram pressure by gas accretion is provided. The somehow flatter slopes of N2H+ and CS can reflect an abundance change and/or subthermal excitation at low column densities., Astronomy & Astrophysics in press

Ammonia and its deuterated isotopologues probe physical conditions in dense molecular cloud cores. With the aim of testing the current understanding of the spin-state chemistry of these molecules, we observed spectral lines of NH3, NH2D, NHD2, ND3, and N2D+ towards a dense, starless core in Ophiuchus with the APEX, GBT, and IRAM 30-m telescopes. The observations were interpreted using a gas-grain chemistry model combined with radiative transfer calculations. The chemistry model distinguishes between the different nuclear spin states of light hydrogen molecules, ammonia, and their deuterated forms. High deuterium fractionation ratios with NH2D/NH3=0.4, NHD2/NH2D=0.2, and ND3/NHD2=0.06 were found in the core. The observed ortho/para ratios of NH2D and NHD2 are close to the corresponding nuclear spin statistical weights. The chemistry model can approximately reproduce the observed abundances, but predicts uniformly too low ortho/para-NH2D, and too large ortho/para-NHD2 ratios. The longevity of N2H+ and NH3 in dense gas, which is prerequisite to their strong deuteration, can be attributed to the chemical inertia of N2 on grain surfaces. The discrepancies between the chemistry model and the observations are likely to be caused by the fact that the model assumes complete scrambling in principal gas-phase deuteration reactions of ammonia, which means that all the nuclei are mixed in reactive collisions. If, instead, these reactions occur through proton hop/hydrogen abstraction processes, statistical spin ratios are to be expected. The present results suggest that while the deuteration of ammonia changes with physical conditions and time, the nuclear spin ratios of ammonia isotopologues do not probe the evolutionary stage of a cloud., Comment: to appear in Astronomy & Astrophysics

We report the detection of a compact (∼5 arcsec; about 1800 au projected size) CO outflow from L1148−IRS. This confirms that this Spitzer source is physically associated with the nearby (≈325 pc) L1148 dense core. Radiative transfer modelling suggests an internal luminosity of 0.08 to 0.13 L⊙. This validates L1148−IRS as a Very Low Luminosity Object (VeLLO; L≤ 0.1 L⊙). The L1148 dense core has unusually low densities and column densities for a star-forming core. It is difficult to understand how L1148−IRS might have formed under these conditions. Independent of the exact final mass of this VeLLO (which is likely

A model of magnetic field structure is presented to help test the prevalence of flux freezing in star-forming clouds of various shapes, orientations, and degrees of central concentration, and to estimate their magnetic field strength. The model is based on weak-field flux freezing in centrally condensed Plummer spheres and spheroids of oblate and prolate shape. For a spheroid of given density contrast, aspect ratio, and inclination, the model estimates the local field strength and direction, and the global field pattern of hourglass shape. Comparisons with a polarization simulation indicate typical angle agreement within 1 - 10 degrees. Scalable analytic expressions are given to match observed polarization patterns, and to provide inputs to radiative transfer codes for more accurate predictions. We measure the mass and size of cloud fragments in several molecular clouds continuously over a wide range of spatial scales (0.05 < r / pc < 3). Based on the recently developed "dendrogram-technique", this characterizes dense cores as well as the enveloping clouds. "Larson's 3rd Law" of constant column density, m(r) = C*r^2, is not well suited to describe the derived mass-size data. Solar neighborhood clouds not forming massive stars (< 10 M_sun; Pipe Nebula, Taurus, Perseus, and Ophiuchus) obey m(r) < 870 M_sun (r / pc)^1.33 . In contrast to this, clouds forming massive stars (Orion A, G10.15$-$0.34, G11.11$-$0.12) do exceed the aforementioned relation. Thus, this limiting mass-size relation may approximate a threshold for the formation of massive stars. Across all clouds, cluster-forming cloud fragments are found to be---at given radius---more massive than fragments devoid of clusters. The cluster-bearing fragments are found to roughly obey a mass-size law m = C*r^1.27 (where the exponent is highly uncertain in any given cloud, but is certainly smaller than 1.5)., accepted to the Astrophysical Journal
