Search

Dark matter may self-interact through a continuum of low-mass states. This happens if dark matter couples to a strongly-coupled nearly-conformal hidden sector. This type of theory is holographically described by brane-localized dark matter interacting with bulk fields in a slice of 5D anti-de Sitter space. The long-range potential in this scenario depends on a non-integer power of the spatial separation, in contrast to the Yukawa potential generated by the exchange of a single 4D mediator. The resulting self-interaction cross section scales like a non-integer power of velocity. We identify the Born, classical and resonant regimes and investigate them using state-of-the-art numerical methods. We demonstrate the viability of our continuum-mediated framework to address the astrophysical small-scale structure anomalies. Investigating the continuum-mediated Sommerfeld enhancement, we demonstrate that a pattern of resonances can occur depending on the non-integer power. A dark Z is a massive Abelian gauge boson which is coupled to the Standard Model through both kinetic and mass mixing with the electroweak sector. We study the phenomenology of the dark Z at an energy-frontier electron-positron collider, such as the proposed International Linear Collider (ILC). We show that precision electroweak constraints and the current bounds from the hadron colliders allow a dark Z that is kinematically accessible at the ILC with 250 GeV or 500 GeV center-of-mass energy. Further, the reach of the ILC searches for a dark Z significantly exceeds the expected reach of the high luminosity LHC. If a signal consistent with a dark Z is discovered, it would motivate a dedicated run of the ILC at the center-of-mass energy matching the dark Z mass. We demonstrate that a short one month run at design luminosity could measure the dark Z chiral couplings to fermions with percent precision. Exotic Higgs decays are promising channels to discover new physics in the near future. We present a simple model with a new light scalar that couples to the Standard Model through a charged lepton-flavor violating interaction. This can yield exciting new signatures, such as $h \to e^+ e^+ \mu^-\mu^-$, that currently have no dedicated searches at the Large Hadron Collider. We discuss this model in detail, assess sensitivity from flavor constraints, explore current constraints from existing multi-lepton searches, and construct a new search strategy to optimally target these exotic, lepton-flavor violating Higgs decays., Comment: 27 pages, 6 figures

We consider a scalar field in a slice of Lorentzian five-dimensional AdS at arbitrary energies. We show that the presence of bulk interactions separate the behavior of the theory into two different regimes: Kaluza--Klein and continuum. We determine the transition scale between these regimes and show that UV brane correlation functions are independent of IR brane-localized operators for four-momenta beyond this transition scale. The same bulk interactions that induce the transition also give rise to cascade decays. We study these cascade decays for the case of a cubic self-interaction in the continuum regime. We find that the cascade decay progresses slowly towards the IR region and gives rise to soft spherical final states, in accordance with former results from both gravity and CFT. We identify a recursion relation between integrated squared amplitudes of different leg numbers and thus evaluate the total rate. We find that cascade decays in the continuum regime are exponentially suppressed. This feature completes the picture of the IR brane as an emergent sector as seen from the UV brane. New dynamics from hidden sectors may manifest as long-range forces between visible matter particles. The well-known case of Yukawa-like potentials occurs via the exchange of a single virtual particle. However, more exotic behavior is also possible. We present three classes of exotic potentials that are generated by relativistic theories: (i) quantum forces from the loop-level exchange of two virtual particles, (ii) conformal forces from a conformal sector, and (iii) emergent forces from degrees of freedom that only exist in the infrared regime of the theory. We discuss the complementarity of spin-dependent force searches in an effective field theory framework. Dark matter can capture in neutron stars from scattering off ultra-relativistic electrons. We present a method to calculate the capture rate on degenerate targets with ultra-relativistic momenta in a compact astronomical object. Our treatment accounts for the target momentum and the Fermi degeneracy of the system. We derive scaling relations for scattering with relativistic targets and confirm consistency with the non-relativistic limit and Lorentz invariance. The potential observation of kinetic heating of neutron stars has a larger discovery reach for dark matter-lepton interactions than conventional terrestrial direct detection experiments. We map this reach onto a set of bosonic and fermionic effective contact interactions between dark matter and leptons as well as nucleons. We show the results for the contact operators up to dimension 6 for spin-0 and spin-1/2 dark matter interactions with relativistic as well as non-relativistic Standard Model fermions. Highlights of this program in the case of vector mediated interactions are presented in a companion letter [1]. We present a model of vector dark matter that interacts through a low-mass vector mediator based on the Higgsing of an SU(2) dark sector. The dark matter is charged under a U(1) gauge symmetry. Even though this symmetry is broken, the residual global symmetries of the theory prevent dark matter decay. Dark matter can capture in neutron stars and heat them to observable luminosities. We study relativistic scattering of dark matter on highly degenerate electrons. We develop a Lorentz invariant formalism to calculate the capture probability of dark matter that accounts for the relativistic motion of the target particles and Pauli exclusion principle. We find that the actual capture probability can be five orders of magnitude larger than the one estimated using a nonrelativistic approach. For dark matter masses $10~{\rm eV}\textup{--}10~{\rm PeV}$, neutron star heating complements and can be more sensitive than terrestrial direct detection searches. The projected sensitivity regions exhibit characteristic features that demonstrate a rich interplay between kinematics and Pauli blocking of the DM--electron system. Neutron stars capture dark matter efficiently. The kinetic energy transferred during capture heats old neutron stars in the local galactic halo to temperatures detectable by upcoming infrared telescopes. We derive the sensitivity of this probe in the framework of effective operators. For dark matter heavier than a GeV, we find that neutron star heating can set limits on the effective operator cutoff that are orders of magnitude stronger than possible from terrestrial direct detection experiments in the case of spin-dependent and velocity-suppressed scattering., 6 pages, 3 figures

The center of the Milky Way is predicted to be the brightest region of $\ensuremath{\gamma}$-rays generated by self-annihilating dark matter particles. Excess emission about the Galactic center above predictions made for standard astrophysical processes has been observed in $\ensuremath{\gamma}$-ray data collected by the Fermi Large Area Telescope. It is well described by the square of a Navarro, Frenk, and White dark matter density distribution. Although other interpretations for the excess are plausible, the possibility that it arises from annihilating dark matter is valid. In this paper, we characterize the excess emission as annihilating dark matter in the framework of an effective field theory. We consider the possibility that the annihilation process is mediated by either pseudoscalar or vector interactions and constrain the coupling strength of these interactions by fitting to the Fermi Large Area Telescope data for energies 1--100 GeV in the $15\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{}\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}15\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{}$ region about the Galactic center using self-consistently derived interstellar emission models and point source lists for the region. The excess persists and its spectral characteristics favor a dark matter particle with a mass in the range approximately from 50 to 190 (10 to 90) GeV and annihilation cross section approximately from $1\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}26}$ to $4\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}25}$ ($6\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}27}$ to $2\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}25}$) ${\mathrm{cm}}^{3}/\mathrm{s}$ for pseudoscalar (vector) interactions. We map these intervals into the corresponding WIMP-neutron scattering cross sections and find that the allowed range lies well below current and projected direct detection constraints for pseudoscalar interactions, but are typically ruled out for vector interactions.

The 6.8$\sigma$ anomaly in excited 8Be nuclear decays via internal pair creation is fit well by a new particle interpretation. In a previous analysis, we showed that a 17 MeV protophobic gauge boson provides a particle physics explanation of the anomaly consistent with all existing constraints. Here we begin with a review of the physics of internal pair creation in 8Be decays and the characteristics of the observed anomaly. To develop its particle interpretation, we provide an effective operator analysis for excited 8Be decays to particles with a variety of spins and parities and show that these considerations exclude simple models with scalar particles. We discuss the required couplings for a gauge boson to give the observed signal, highlighting the significant dependence on the precise mass of the boson and isospin mixing and breaking effects. We present anomaly-free extensions of the Standard Model that contain protophobic gauge bosons with the desired couplings to explain the 8Be anomaly. In the first model, the new force carrier is a U(1)B gauge boson that kinetically mixes with the photon; in the second model, it is a U(1)(B-L) gauge boson with a similar kinetic mixing. In both cases, the models predict relatively large charged lepton couplings ~ 0.001 that can resolve the discrepancy in the muon anomalous magnetic moment and are amenable to many experimental probes. The dark sector may contain a dark photon that kinetically mixes with the Standard Model photon, allowing dark matter to interact weakly with normal matter. In previous work we analyzed the implications of this scenario for dark matter capture by the Sun. Dark matter will gather in the core of the Sun and annihilate to dark photons. These dark photons travel outwards from the center of the Sun and may decay to produce positrons that can be detected by the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS-02) on the ISS. We found that the dark photon parameter space accessible to this analysis is largely constrained by strong limits on the spin-independent WIMP-nucleon cross section from direct detection experiments. In this paper we build upon previous work by considering the case where the dark sector contains two species of Dirac fermion that are nearly degenerate in mass and couple inelastically to the dark photon. We find that for small values of the mass splitting $\Delta \sim 100 ~\text{keV}$, the predicted positron signal at AMS-02 remains largely unchanged from the previously considered elastic case while constraints from direct detection are relaxed, leaving a region of parameter space with dark matter mass $100 ~\text{GeV} \lesssim m_X \lesssim 10 ~\text{TeV}$, dark photon mass $1 ~\text{MeV} \lesssim m_{A'} \lesssim 100 ~\text{MeV}$, and kinetic mixing parameter $10^{-9} \lesssim \varepsilon \lesssim 10^{-8}$ that is untouched by supernova observations and fixed target experiments but where an inelastic dark sector may still be discovered using existing AMS-02 data., Comment: 18 pages, 5 figures; v2: minor revisions to match published version; v3: updated direct detection and CMB constraints and corrected decay length in code, moving the region of experimental sensitivity to values of epsilon that are lower by an order of magnitude

We present a framework where dark matter interacts with the Standard Model through a light, spin-0 mediator that couples chirally to pairs of different-flavor leptons. This flavor violating final state weakens bounds on new physics coupled to leptons from terrestrial experiments and cosmic-ray measurements. As an example, we apply this framework to construct a model for the Fermi-LAT excess of GeV $\gamma$-rays from the galactic center. We comment on the viability of this portal for self-interacting dark matter explanations of small scale structure anomalies and embeddings in flavor models. Models of this type are shown to be compatible with the muon anomalous magnetic moment anomaly. The data are explained by a 17 MeV vector gauge boson X that is produced in the decay of an excited state to the ground state, ^{8}Be^{*}→^{8}Be X, and then decays through X→e^{+}e^{-}. The X boson mediates a fifth force with a characteristic range of 12 fm and has millicharged couplings to up and down quarks and electrons, and a proton coupling that is suppressed relative to neutrons. The protophobic X boson may also alleviate the current 3.6σ discrepancy between the predicted and measured values of the muon's anomalous magnetic moment.

Dark matter may interact with the Standard Model through the kinetic mixing of dark photons, A′, with Standard Model photons. Such dark matter will accumulate in the Sun and annihilate into dark photons. The dark photons may then leave the Sun and decay into pairs of charged Standard Model particles that can be detected by the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS). The directionality of this “dark sunshine” is distinct from all astrophysical backgrounds, providing an opportunity for unambiguous dark matter discovery by AMS. We perform a complete analysis of this scenario including Sommerfeld enhancements of dark matter annihilation and the effect of the Sun’s magnetic field on the signal, and we define a set of cuts to optimize the signal probability. With the three years of data already collected, AMS may discover dark matter with mass 1 TeV≲mX≲10 TeV, dark photon masses mA′∼O(100) MeV, and kinetic mixing parameters 10-11≲ϵ≲10-8. The proposed search extends beyond existing beam dump and supernova bounds, and it is complementary to direct detection, probing the same region of parameter space.

We explore the reach of a 100 TeV proton collider to discover KK gluons in a warped extra dimension. These particles are templates for color adjoint vectors that couple dominantly to the top quark. We examine their production rate at NLO in the six-flavor m-ACOT scheme for a variety of reference models defining their coupling to quarks, largely inspired by the RS model of a warped extra dimension. In agreement with previous calculations aimed at lower energy machines, we find that the NLO corrections are typically negative, resulting in a $K$-factor of around 0.7 (depending on the model) and with a residual scale dependence on the order of $\pm 20\%$, greater than the variation from the scale exhibited by the na\"{i}ve LO estimate., Comment: 33 pages, 5 figures, 2 tables

Dark matter may be charged under dark electromagnetism with a dark photon that kinetically mixes with the Standard Model photon. In this framework, dark matter will collect at the center of the Earth and annihilate into dark photons, which may reach the surface of the Earth and decay into observable particles. We determine the resulting signal rates, including Sommerfeld enhancements, which play an important role in bringing the Earth's dark matter population to their maximal, equilibrium value. For dark matter masses $m_X \sim$ 100 GeV - 10 TeV, dark photon masses $m_{A'} \sim$ MeV - GeV, and kinetic mixing parameters $\varepsilon \sim 10^{-10} - 10^{-8}$, the resulting electrons, muons, photons, and hadrons that point back to the center of the Earth are a smoking-gun signal of dark matter that may be detected by a variety of experiments, including neutrino telescopes, such as IceCube, and space-based cosmic ray detectors, such as Fermi-LAT and AMS. We present SUSY_FLAVOR -- a Fortran 77 program that calculates important leptonic and semi-leptonic low-energy observables in the general R-parity conserving MSSM. For a set of input MSSM parameters, the code gives predictions for the K0-bar K0, D-bar D, B_d-bar B_d and B_s-bar B_s mixing parameters; B to X_s gamma, B_{s,d} to l+ l-, K0_L to pi nu-bar nu and K+ to pi+ nu-bar nu decay branching ratios; and the electric dipole moments of the leptons and the neutron. All these quantities are calculated at one-loop level (with some higher-order QCD corrections included) in the exact sfermion mass eigenbasis, without resorting to mass insertion approximations., Comment: 47 pages. Typical searches for supersymmetry cannot test models in which the two lightest particles have a small ("compressed") mass splitting, due to the small momentum of the particles produced in the decay of the second-to-lightest particle. However, datasets with large missing transverse momentum ($E_{\rm T}^{\rm miss}$) can generically search for invisible particle production and therefore provide constraints on such models. We apply data from the ATLAS mono-jet (jet+$E_{\rm T}^{\rm miss}$) and vector-boson-fusion (forward jets and $E_{\rm T}^{\rm miss}$) searches to such models. The two datasets have complementary sensitivity, but in all cases experimental limits are at least five times weaker than theoretical predictions.

We investigate the IR dynamics of N=2 SUSY gauge theories in 3D with antisymmetric matter. The presence of the antisymmetric fields leads to further splitting of the Coulomb branch. Counting zero modes in the instanton background suggests that more than a single direction along the Coulomb branch may remain unlifted. We examine the case of SU(4) with one or two antisymmetric fields and various flavors in detail. Using the results for the corresponding 4D theories, we find the IR dynamics of the 3D cases via compactification and a real mass deformation. We find that for the s-confining case with two antisymmetric fields, a second unlifted Coulomb branch direction indeed appears in the low-energy dynamics. We present several non-trivial consistency checks to establish the validity of these results. We present simplified models for the galactic center gamma-ray excess where Dirac dark matter annihilates into pairs or triplets of on-shell bosonic mediators to the Standard Model. These annihilation modes allow the dark matter mass to be heavier than those of conventional effective theories for the gamma-ray excess. Because the annihilation rate is set by the dark matter--mediator coupling, the Standard Model coupling can be made parametrically small to `hide' the dark sector by suppressing direct detection and collider signals. We explore the viability of these models as a thermal relic and on the role of the mediators for controlling the gamma-ray spectral shape. We present an effective non-relativistic theory of self-interacting dark matter. We classify the long range interactions and discuss how they can be generated from quantum field theories. Generic dark sectors can generate singular potentials. We show how to consistently renormalize such potentials and apply this to the calculation of the Sommerfeld enhancement of dark matter interactions. We explore further applications of this enhancement to astrophysical probes of dark matter including the core vs. cusp problem., 25 pages, 6 figures

The lack of observation of superpartners at the Large Hadron Collider so far has led to a renewed interest in supersymmetric models with R-parity violation (RPV). In particular, imposing the Minimal Flavor Violation (MFV) hypothesis on a general RPV model leads to a realistic and predictive framework. Naturalness suggests that stops and gluinos should appear at or below the TeV mass scale. We consider a simplified model with these two particles and MFV couplings. The model predicts a significant rate of events with same-sign dileptons and b-jets. We re-analyze a recent CMS search in this channel and show that the current lower bound on the gluino mass is about 800 GeV at 95% confidence level, with only a weak dependence on the stop mass as long as the gluino can decay to an on-shell top-stop pair. We also discuss how this search can be further optimized for the RPV/MFV scenario, using the fact that MFV stop decays often result in jets with large invariant mass. With the proposed improvements, we estimate that gluino masses of up to about 1.4 TeV can be probed at the 14 TeV LHC with a 100 fb^-1 data set., 18 pages, 6 figures; v2: References added

We calculate contributions to the photon and gluon magnetic dipole operators that mediate b -> s gamma and b -> d gamma transitions in the Randall-Sundrum model of a warped extra dimension with anarchic bulk fermions and a brane localized Higgs. Unlike the Standard Model, there are large contributions to the left-handed b quark decays, parameterized by the Wilson coefficient C'_7, due to the pattern of bulk fermion localization, and sizable contributions from the gluonic penguins, C(')_8, through renormalization group mixing. Further, unlike the Randall-Sundrum result for mu -> e gamma, the unprimed Wilson coefficients receive non-negligible contributions from the misalignment of the bulk fermion spectrum with the Standard Model flavor sector. We compare the size of effects and the constraints imposed by the branching ratios Br(B -> X_s gamma) and X_d gamma)> within the minimal and the custodial model. Within the custodial framework, we study the effect on a number of benchmark observables and find that Br(B -> X_s mu^+ mu^-) and the forward-backward asymmetry in B -> K^* mu^+ mu^- remain close to their Standard Model predictions. On the other hand, there can be large enhancements of the time-dependent CP asymmetry in B -> K^* gamma and the transverse asymmetry A_T^(2).

Particle physics aims to understand the universe around us. The Standard Model of particle physics describes the basic structure of matter and forces, to the extent we have been able to probe thus far. However, it leaves some big questions unanswered. Some are within the Standard Model itself, such as why there are so many fundamental particles and why they have different masses. In other cases, the Standard Model simply fails to explain some phenomena, such as the observed matter-antimatter asymmetry in the universe, the existence of dark matter and dark energy, and the mechanism that reconciles gravity with quantum mechanics. These gaps lead us to conclude that the universe must contain new and unexplored elements of Nature. Most of particle and nuclear physics is directed towards discovering and understanding these new laws of physics. These questions are best pursued with a variety of approaches, rather than with a single experiment or technique. Particle physics uses three basic approaches, often characterized as exploration along the cosmic, energy, and intensity frontiers. Each employs different tools and techniques, but they ultimately address the same fundamental questions. This allows a multi-pronged approach where attacking basic questions from different angles furthers knowledge and providesmore » deeper answers, so that the whole is more than a sum of the parts. A coherent picture or underlying theoretical model can more easily emerge, to be proven correct or not. The intensity frontier explores fundamental physics with intense sources and ultra-sensitive, sometimes massive detectors. It encompasses searches for extremely rare processes and for tiny deviations from Standard Model expectations. Intensity frontier experiments use precision measurements to probe quantum effects. They typically investigate very large energy scales, even higher than the kinematic reach of high energy particle accelerators. The science addresses basic questions, such as: Are there new sources of CP violation? Is there CP violation in the leptonic sector? Are neutrinos their own antiparticles? Do the forces unify? Is there a weakly coupled hidden sector that is related to dark matter? Do new symmetries exist at very high energy scales? To identify the most compelling science opportunities in this area, the workshop Fundamental Physics at the Intensity Frontier was held in December 2011, sponsored by the Office of High Energy Physics in the US Department of Energy Office of Science. Participants investigated the most promising experiments to exploit these opportunities and described the knowledge that can be gained from such a program. The workshop generated much interest in the community, as witnessed by the large and energetic participation by a broad spectrum of scientists. This document chronicles the activities of the workshop, with contributions by more than 450 authors. The workshop organized the intensity frontier science program along six topics that formed the basis for working groups: experiments that probe (i) heavy quarks, (ii) charged leptons, (iii) neutrinos, (iv) proton decay, (v) light, weakly interacting particles, and (vi) nucleons, nuclei, and atoms. The conveners for each working group included an experimenter and a theorist working in the field and an observer from the community at large. The working groups began their efforts well in advance of the workshop, holding regular meetings and soliciting written contributions. Specific avenues of exploration were identified by each working group. Experiments that study rare strange, charm, and bottom meson decays provide a broad program of measurements that are sensitive to new interactions. Charged leptons, particularly muons and taus, provide a precise probe for new physics because the Standard Model predictions for their properties are very accurate. Research at the intensity frontier can reveal CP violation in the lepton sector, and elucidate whether neutrinos are their own antiparticles. A very weakly coupled hidden-sector that may comprise the dark matter in the universe could be discovered. The search for proton decay can probe the unification of the forces with unprecedented reach and test sacrosanct symmetries to very high scales. Detecting an electric dipole moment for the neutron, or neutral atoms, could establish a clear signal for new physics, while limits on such a measurement would place severe constraints on many new theories. This workshop marked the first instance where discussion of these diverse programs was held under one roof. As a result, it was realized that this broad effort has many connections; a large degree of synergy exists between the different areas and they address similar questions. Results from one area were found to be pertinent to experiments in another domain.« less

We propose that the fermionic superpartner of a weak-scale Goldstone boson can be a natural WIMP candidate. The p-wave annihilation of this `Goldstone fermion' into pairs of Goldstone bosons automatically generates the correct relic abundance, whereas the XENON100 direct detection bounds are evaded due to suppressed couplings to the Standard Model. Further, it is able to avoid indirect detection constraints because the relevant s-wave annihilations are small. The interactions of the Goldstone supermultiplet can induce non-standard Higgs decays and novel collider phenomenology., 25 pages, 6 figures. References added, minor typos corrected. We present an analysis of the loop-induced magnetic dipole operator in the Randall-Sundrum model of a warped extra dimension with anarchic bulk fermions and an IR brane-localized Higgs. These operators are finite at one-loop order and we explicitly calculate the branching ratio for {mu}{yields}e{gamma} using the mixed position/momentum space formalism. The particular bound on the anarchic Yukawa and Kaluza-Klein (KK) scales can depend on the flavor structure of the anarchic matrices. It is possible for a generic model to either be ruled out or unaffected by these bounds without any fine-tuning. We quantify how these models realize this surprising behavior. We also review tree-level lepton flavor bounds in these models and show that these are on the verge of tension with the {mu}{yields}e{gamma} bounds from typical models with a 3 TeV Kaluza-Klein scale. Further, we illuminate the nature of the one-loop finiteness of these diagrams and show how to accurately determine the degree of divergence of a five-dimensional loop diagram using both the five-dimensional and KK formalism. This power counting can be obfuscated in the four-dimensional Kaluza-Klein formalism and we explicitly point out subtleties that ensure that the two formalisms agree. During the last few years the Tevatron has dramatically improved the bounds on rare $B$-meson decays into two leptons. In the case of ${B}_{s}^{0}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\ensuremath{\mu}}^{+}{\ensuremath{\mu}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$, the current bound is only 10 times greater than the standard model expectation. Sensitivity to this decay is one of the benchmark goals for LHCb performance and physics. The Higgs penguin dominates this rate in the region of large $\mathrm{tan} \ensuremath{\beta}$ of the minimal supersymmetric standard model. This is not necessarily the case in the region of low $\mathrm{tan} \ensuremath{\beta}$, since box and $Z$-penguin diagrams may contribute at a comparable rate. In this article, we compute the complete one-loop minimal supersymmetric standard model contribution to ${B}_{s,d}^{0}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\ensuremath{\ell}}^{+}{\ensuremath{\ell}}^{\ensuremath{'}\ensuremath{-}}$ for $\ensuremath{\ell}$, ${\ensuremath{\ell}}^{\ensuremath{'}}=e$, $\ensuremath{\mu}$. We study the predictions for general values of $\mathrm{tan} \ensuremath{\beta}$ with arbitrary flavor mixing parameters. We discuss the possibility of both enhancing and suppressing the branching ratios relative to their standard model expectations. In particular, we find that there are ``cancellation regions'' in parameter space where the branching ratio is suppressed well below the standard model expectation, making it effectively invisible to the LHC.

Charged particle storage rings play a key role in the frontiers of high-energy physics. For the most part, however, particle physics is largely unaccessible to undergraduate-level students, discouraging such students from taking an early interest in it. It is our premise, however, that the fundamental physics of storage rings can, in fact, be taught at this stage, fostering interest in accelerator physics. In this paper we present an introduction to the transverse linear optics of a charged particle storage ring suitable for second-year undergraduates. We begin by introducing transverse motion in the one-dimensional case to establish a familiarity with linear lattices. We then move on to our primary goal which is to analytically decompose a coupled two-dimensional system with a minimal amount of axiomatic treatment (the derivation of the decoupling matrix, for example). While this is by no means a comprehensive exposition on beam dynamics, it serves to provide meaningful insight into the fundamental physics involved in these machines for introductory students. It is our hope that this approach can be extended to other aspects of high-energy physics so that undergraduates may have a better glimpse at the frontiers of their field.

We study quantum corrections to an extra dimensional Yukawa theory where a single flat extra spatial dimension is compactified on an interval. At a UV scale this theory can be made equivalent to a 5D theory with a bulk four-fermion operator by choosing appropriate boundary conditions for the running of the low-energy theory. Using the fermion bubble approximation we find vacuum solutions which break the chiral symmetries that arise from compactification. Of particular interest are the form of brane localized terms which arise from fermion loops. For example, quadratically divergent contributions to the scalar mass are absent at one loop due to a remnant of 5D Lorentz invariance that is only lost after introducing fermion bulk masses.
