Five Australian seaweed species, Phyllosphora comosa, Ecklonia radiata, Durvillaea potatorum, Sargassum fallax, and Cystophora siliquosa, thrive along the country's shorelines. Some of these seaweeds have recognized health benefits but have not been fully investigated in terms of their bioactive components and mechanisms of action. We employed ultrasonication with 70% methanol to extract phenolic compounds from these seaweeds and investigated a range of bioactivities for these extracts, including anti‐inflammatory activity exploring urease inhibition, nitric oxide scavenging activity, protein denaturation inhibition, and protease inhibition. Anti‐diabetic activities were investigated using α‐amylase and α‐glucosidase inhibition assays. Anti‐proliferative and anti‐mitotic activities were evaluated using yeast‐cell and green‐gram models, respectively. Our findings showed that C. siliquosa inhibited nitric oxide, urease, and protease activities, with S. fallax, P. comosa, and E. radiata exhibiting substantial inhibition of protein denaturation. E. radiata displayed inhibitory effects on both α‐amylase and α‐glucosidase, whereas P. comosa targeted only the α‐glucosidase enzyme, indicating different mechanisms of anti‐diabetic activity. In these anti‐mitotic assays, C. siliquosa exhibited low cell viability and a significant anti‐proliferative effect, particularly within 24 h, while E. radiata demonstrated notable inhibition at 48 h. LC‐ESI‐QTOF‐MS/MS investigation identified 48 phenolic compounds, including 19 phenolic acids, 20 flavonoids, and 9 other polyphenols. The presence of these compounds in extracts correlated with observed biological activities. Due to the growing safety and environmental concerns associated with biocides, phenolic-soy branched chain fatty acids (phenolic-soy BCFAs) are synthesized as new bio-based antimicrobial agents. Safety evaluation is essential before the wide adoption of these new antimicrobial products. This study was initiated to evaluate the safety of four phenolic-soy BCFAs (with phenol, thymol, carvacrol, or creosote branches). Methyl-branched iso-oleic acid, phenol, and creosote were included in the study as controls. In silico toxicity simulation tools predicted that the phenolic BCFAs had much higher toxicities to aquatic organisms than free phenolics did, while the opposite was predicted for rats. The developmental toxicity of four phenolic-soy BCFAs was assessed using an in vivo chicken embryonic assay. Results showed that creosote-soy BCFA had much lower mortality rates than creosote at the same dosages. Additionally, creosotesoy BCFA and methyl-branched iso-oleic acid induced minimal estrogenic activity in the concentration range of 10 nM - 1 μM. Carvacrol-soy BCFA treatments significantly increased (p < 0.05) oxidative stress levels with higher thiobarbituric acid reactive substances in the livers of chicken embryos. Altogether, the phenolic-soy BCFAs, especially creosote-soy BCFA, reported in this study are potentially promising and safer bio-based antimicrobial products. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Plants are a rich source of secondary metabolites, among which phenolics are the most abundant. To date, over 8000 various polyphenolic compounds have been identified in plant species, among which phenolic acids, flavonoids, coumarins, stilbenes and lignans are the most important ones. Acne is one of the most commonly treated dermatological diseases, among which acne vulgaris and rosacea are the most frequently diagnosed. In the scientific literature, there is a lack of a detailed scientific presentation and discussion on the importance of plant phenolics in the treatment of the most common specific skin diseases, e.g., acne. Therefore, the aim of this review is to gather, present and discuss the current state of knowledge on the activity of various plant phenolics towards the prevention and treatment of acne, including in vitro, in vivo and human studies. It was revealed that because of their significant antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities, phenolic compounds may be used in the treatment of various types of acne, individually as well as in combination with commonly used drugs like clindamycin and benzoyl peroxide. Among the various phenolics that have been tested, EGCG, quercetin and nobiletin seem to be the most promising ones; however, more studies, especially clinical trials, are needed to fully evaluate their efficacy in treating acne. γ-Aminobutyric acid (GABA), a nonprotein amino acid, can accumulate in plants in response to abiotic stresses. The effects of postharvest treatments on endogenous GABA concentrations and exogenous GABA on whole horticulture product quality has recently received attention. However, knowledge of the effects of mechanical damage events such as peeling and cutting on GABA concentrations of fresh-cut products is limited. In this study, concentrations of GABA and antioxidants including total phenolics and ascorbic acid in fresh-cut cantaloupe, pineapple, and cauliflower during storage at 5 °C for 9 days were investigated. We found that GABA accumulated in fresh-cut pineapple and cauliflower during storage, but that the increase in cantaloupe was not significant. Total phenolics, total ascorbic acid, and dehydroascorbic acid (DHA) remained stable in fresh-cut cantaloupe and cauliflower. In pineapple, however, total phenolics and total ascorbic acid concentrations decreased, whereas the DHA concentration increased. No correlation was found between GABA and antioxidants in fresh-cut cauliflower and cantaloupe; however, GABA was negatively related to antioxidants, including total phenolics and total ascorbic acid, in fresh-cut pineapple. The results show that GABA accumulation may represent a stress response to damage that occurs during the preparation of fresh cut products, but that the degree of response is affected by the specific product. Further research of GABA metabolism in response to minimal processing, including GABA biosynthesis, in a wider range of horticultural products and relationships with antioxidants is warranted. BACKGROUND: Obesity is recognized as a lifestyle‐related disease and the main risk factor for a series of pathological conditions, including cardiovascular diseases, hypertension and type 2 diabetes. Citrus limon is an important medicinal plant, and its fruits are rich in flavonoids investigated for their potential in managing obesity. In the present work, a green extraction applied to lemon squeezing waste (LSW) was optimized to recover pancreatic lipase (PL) inhibitors. RESULTS: The microwave‐assisted procedure yielded an extract with higher lipase inhibitory activity than those obtained by maceration and ultrasound. The main compounds present in the extract were identified by high‐performance liquid chromatographic–mass spectrometric analysis, and hesperidin, eriocitrin and 4′‐methyllucenin II were isolated. The three compounds were evaluated for in vitro PL inhibitory activity, and 4′‐methyllucenin II resulted in the most promising inhibitor (IC50 = 12.1 μmol L−1; Ki = 62.2 μmol L−1). Multispectroscopic approaches suggested the three flavonoids act as competitive inhibitors and the binding studies indicated a greater interaction between PL and 4′‐methyllucenin II. Docking analysis indicated the significant interactions of the three flavonoids with the PL catalytic site. CONCLUSION: The present work highlights flavonoid glycosides as promising PL inhibitors and proposes LSW as a safe ingredient for the preparation of food supplements for managing obesity. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry. Apple (Malus domestica) is a reliable source of nutrients to increase the bioactive compounds intake in the human body. In the market, the development of apple is still growing, not only in the hybridization of new cultivars, but also in the functional food products, based on apple's bioactive compounds. In this paper, we review the recent studies about the chemical composition of apples, including carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, dietary fibers, minerals, vitamins, phenolics, and other compounds, from various cultivars, grown in different countries or regions. Among the bioactive compounds in apple, the phenolic compounds, including hydroxybenzoic acids, hydroxycinnamic acids, flavanols and their oligo- and polymeric structure, flavonols, dihydrochalcones, and anthocyanins, majorly contribute to beneficial biological impacts. Therefore, the extraction process might be the most critical step to recover all the phenolics from apple and could be used in various food product developments. In this paper, the comparison of conventional and developed phenolic extraction methods is also reviewed in various apple products (flesh, peel, pomace, pulp, etc.). The selection of food grade and green solvents in the optimal phenolic extraction methods could reduce the environmental issues, thus supports sustainability and can be safer for consumers. To sum up, this paper may help the readers, both at general household and industrial levels, to understand the nutritional composition of various apple cultivars from different regions and to select the optimum conditions for apple's phenolic extraction, based on recent studies. Two genotypes of pigmented maize (black (BM) and red (RM)) were used as flour ingredients in several formulations of the traditional baked maize dish "proja". This study investigated the stability of phytochemical compounds and antioxidant activity in proja as affected by baking and different acidity degrees of dough formulations. Compared to RM proja, all BM proja formulations were significantly higher in antioxidant compounds and exhibited the highest inhibitory activity (73–85%) against DPPH. There was a strong significant correlation between DPPH inhibition and total phenolics (r2 = 0.95), flavonoids (r2 = 0.96), and anthocyanins (r2 = 0.97) in baked proja. After baking, 67–85% of total phenolics were retained. The fate of flavonoids and anthocyanins after baking was variable: from 70% degradation to liberation. Dough acidity significantly and positively affected the content of phenolics, flavonoids, and anthocyanins in BM proja (r2 = 0.70, 0.82, and 0.47, respectively). Baking increased antioxidant activity against DPPH, •OH, and O2•− radicals in proja, except for ≈10% decline of DPPH inhibition in BM proja. In RM proja, retention of inhibitory capacity against O2•− was highly correlated to flavonoid retention (r2 = 0.71). Using pigmented maize flour in proja baking resulted in proja with appreciable content of total phenolics, flavonoids, anthocyanins, and high antioxidant activity, confirming the significant improvement of the nutrient profile of this traditional food. Historically, tree sap has been used globally for medicinal purposes, in fermented beverages, and for syrup production. Maple tree sap is notably concentrated into syrup and is valued as a natural sweetener rich in phenolic compounds and minerals compared to refined sugar. Recently, syrups from other trees like black walnut (Juglans nigra) and sycamore (Platanus occidentalis) have gained popularity, yet their properties are not well understood scientifically. To address this gap, we collected sycamore, black walnut, and maple syrup samples and analyzed their physicochemical and functional properties. Our findings showed significant differences among the syrups in pH, browning intensity, and water activity (p < 0.05). Sycamore syrup had the highest total phenolic content, followed by black walnut and maple syrups. Both black walnut and sycamore syrups exhibited similar antioxidant activity, significantly higher than maple syrup (p < 0.05). High-resolution mass spectrometry identified 54 phenolic acids and 22 flavonoids in these syrups, including Acetylsalicylic acid, 3,5-Dihydroxybenzoic acid, and syringic acid, known for their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Additionally, sycamore syrups and most black walnut syrups displayed varying degrees of antimicrobial activity against Gram-positive and/or Gram-negative microorganisms. Along the food production chain of animal, fish, and vegetable products, a huge amount of by-products are generated every year. Major nutritional, financial, and environmental advantages can be achieved by transforming them into functional ingredients for food formulation and fortification. In this review, we investigated various conventional and emerging treatments recently employed to obtain functional ingredients rich in proteins, fibers, and bioactive compounds from vegetables, fish, meat, and dairy by-products. The optimal enrichment level in food as well as the nutritional, techno-functional, and sensory properties of the final food were also discussed. Novel technologies such as ultrasounds, microwaves, and high pressure have been successfully adopted to enhance the extraction of target compounds. The functional ingredients, added both in liquid or powder form, were able to improve the nutritional quality and antioxidant potential of food, although high levels of fortification may cause undesired changes in texture and flavor. Fall armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda), a devastating pest, poses massive threat to maize (Zea mays L.) production worldwide. This study was aimed to evaluate the status of phenolics and defensive enzymes in wild (teosinte), inbred (CML 72, LM 24) and backcross derived maize line, BC (LM 24 × teosinte) exposed to fall armyworm infestation. The activities of polyphenol oxidase (PPO), peroxidase (POD), phenylalanine ammonia lyase (PAL), tyrosine ammonia lyase (TAL), β-1,3 glucanase, chitinase and protease inhibitor were determined. The contents of total phenols, flavonoids, ortho- dihydroxy phenols and lignin were also determined. The high stress tolerance efficiency of teosinte was attributed to the high activities of POD, PAL and TAL in its leaves during infestation that increased the content of total phenols and enhanced lignification. Additionally, it had high β-glucanase activity for the hydrolysis of glucans in the cell wall of pest. BC (LM 24 × teosinte) attained some of the unique features of teosinte as both the genotypes had comparable POD, β-glucanase, chitinase and protease inhibitor activities and equivalent levels of total phenols and lignin in their infested leaves that were relatively higher than those of LM 24. CML 72 differed significantly from LM 24 in its stress tolerance mechanism as it had maximum activities of β-glucanase, chitinase and protease inhibitor in its infested leaves. It may be concluded that teosinte followed by BC (LM 24 × teosinte) showed maximum tolerance to pest infestation. The inbred lines, LM 24 and CML 72 showed moderate tolerance to stress conditions by adopting varied mechanisms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study evaluated and compared the phytochemical and antioxidant properties of the solvent extracts of Azadirachta indica A. Juss and Vernonia amygdalina Del leaves. Methanolic and aqueous extracts showed high (P ≤ 0.05) extract yields (in %), compared to chloroform and ethyl acetate extracts from both V. amygdalina and A. indica leaves. The study exhibited high phytochemical content in methanol and aqueous extracts compared to chloroform and ethyl acetate extracts, confirming the potential for medicinal use. V. amygdalina methanol and aqueous extracts had higher (P ≤ 0.05) total phenolic content (TPC), in mg GAE/gDW, (158.810±0.846 and 217.883±0.265, respectively) than chloroform (37.574±0.118) and ethyl acetate (104.758±0.236) but higher ethyl acetate content in A. indica extracts. Low polar solvents extracted high (P ≤ 0.05) total flavonoids, in mgQE/gDW, (367.051±0.858 and 149.808±0.009) compared to high polar solvents (14.863±0.071 and 54.226±0.014) in V. amygdalina while as in A. indica leaf extracts, low polar solvents showed high TFC (658.469±3.451 and 275.288±10.490) compared to high polar solvents (26.312±0.063 and 48.858±0.063) respectively. In vitro total antioxidant capacity, in mg/g, was higher in polar solvents than in low-polar solvents, ranging from 34.300±1.784 to 121.015±6.839 for A. indica ethyl acetate and methanolic extracts. A strong correlation between TPC and tannic acid content was observed, except in A. indica methanolic extracts of A. indica. Ferric reducing power was high, except for V. amygdalina chloroform and methanol leaf extracts, which were lower (P≤ 0.05) than that of the standard ascorbic acid. The study revealed that high polar solvents, such as methanol and water, are more efficient in the extraction of antioxidants from A. indica but lower in V. amygdalina extracts. Background: Older subjects are at risk of elevated intestinal permeability (IP) which can lead to immune system activation and low-grade systemic inflammation. Dietary changes are a potential strategy to reduce IP. The MaPLE project evaluated the hypothesis that increasing (poly)phenol intake would beneficially impact on several important markers and pathways related to IP. The objective of the present study was to assess the effects of the MaPLE (poly)phenol-rich diet (PR-diet) on additional IP-related biomarkers and any relationships between biomarker responses. Methods: A randomised, controlled, crossover study was performed involving 51 participants (≥ 60 y) with increased IP, as determined by serum zonulin levels. Participants were randomly assigned to one of two intervention groups: a control diet (C-diet) or a PR-diet. Each intervention lasted 8 weeks and was separated by an 8-week washout period. For the present study, serum and faecal samples were used to measure zonula occludens-1 (ZO-1), occludin, adiponectin, calprotectin, faecal calprotectin, soluble cluster of differentiation 14 (sCD14), interleukin-6 receptor (IL-6R), and vascular endothelial-cadherin (VEC) levels using quantitative ELISA assays. Data were analysed using ANOVA, and Spearman and network correlation analysis were performed to identify the relationship among biomarkers at baseline. Results: Among the different markers analysed, a significant reduction was observed for faecal and serum calprotectin (p = 0.0378 and p = 0.0186, respectively) following the PR-diet, while a significant increase in ZO-1 was found (p = 0.001) after both the intervention periods (PR-diet and C-diet). In addition, a time effect was observed for VEC levels showing a reduction (p = 0.038) following the PR-diet. Based on network correlation analysis, two clusters of correlations were identified: one cluster with high levels of serum calprotectin, faecal calprotectin, sCD14, interleukin (IL)-6, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, C-reactive protein (CRP) and bacterial DNAemia (16 S rRNA gene copies), with potential inflammatory-induced intestinal permeability. Differently, the other cluster had high levels of serum occludin, IL-6R, soluble intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (sICAM-1) and VEC, with potential inflammatory-induced endothelial dysfunction. Conclusions: Overall, this study provides further support to the hypothesis that a (poly)phenol-rich diet may help to ameliorate intestinal permeability-associated conditions. In this regard, calprotectin might represent a promising biomarker since it is a protein that typically increases with age and it is considered indicative of intestinal and systemic inflammation. Further research is needed to develop targeted (poly)phenol-rich diets against age-related gut dysfunction and inflammation. Background: The changes in the physical structures of the products are the first things that consumers pay attention to. Therefore, it is essential and significant importance to take measures to improve the storage conditions of products and to minimize quality losses. The main objective of the study was to evaluate the effects of agro-ecological conditions on bioactive compounds and fruit quality of kiwifruit during cold storage. The 'Hayward' kiwifruit cultivar grown in Ordu, Giresun, Samsun, Rize, and Yalova provinces of Türkiye were kept at 0 ± 0.5 °C and relative humidity of 90 ± 5% for 150 d. Results: The kiwifruit obtained from the provinces of Yalova, Ordu, and Giresun experienced the least weight loss during cold storage. Kiwifruit from Samsun and Yalova provinces had the lowest fruit firmness, while those from Giresun had the highest on 150th d. The changes were observed in the skin and flesh colors of the kiwifruit belonging to all cultivation areas. The amount of vitamin C increased throughout the study in all ecological conditions, but the Yalova province's kiwifruit was found to have the highest levels. Additionally, in all ecologies, kiwifruit showed an increase in antioxidant activity, total phenolics, and total flavonoids, all known to have beneficial effects on human health. The total antioxidant activity and total phenolics were highest in the kiwifruit of Yalova province, but the total flavonoids were found in the kiwifruit of Rize and Ordu provinces. Conclusion: The study's results revealed that kiwifruit's bioactive compounds and quality parameters may vary depending on the cultivation area. Summary The rat's model evaluated the function of sprouted beans enriched with probiotic Lactiplantibacillus plantarum 299v in alleviating dyslipidaemia, inflammation and disturbed redox homeostasis caused by a high‐lard diet. Sprouted beans improved the total antioxidant capacity of serum and liver, regardless of whether the feeds had a higher content of low‐molecular antioxidants or were additionally enriched with probiotics. The reduction of inflammation (lowered level of C‐reactive protein) and restoration of triglycerides and total cholesterol to the levels recorded in the control group (AIN‐93M) were especially observed in the group supplemented with the control adzuki bean. Introducing sprouted legumes (both the control and probiotic‐rich) improved microbiota activity affected by a high‐lard diet. The highest, desirable reduction of urease (by 80%) and tryptophanase (by 78%) activity was found in the groups fed with probiotic‐rich adzuki and mung bean sprouts respectively. Sprouted beans improve the metabolism of individuals subjected to a diet with an increased fat‐to‐carbohydrate energy ratio, especially concerning oxidative stress injury and microbiota activity. Introduction: In recent years, Norway spruce (Picea abies L.) forests in Central Europe have faced escalating threats from bark beetles, primarily Ips typographus (L.), and other species, such as I. duplicatus (Sahlberg). Outbreaks are partially attributed to weakened tree defense resulting from drought periods induced by climate change. This study examines Norway spruce's physiological and metabolic reactions to acute drought stress during the growing season and evaluates its susceptibility to I. typographus and I. duplicatus. Methodology: In order to induce drought stress, mature Norway spruces had their roots covered with a roof in April 2021, depriving them of water. Control trees were left with free access to natural rainwater. Over 5 months of the growing season, soil water potential, bark temperature, tree trunk circumference, and sap flow were monitored. Roofed trees and controls were sampled in July, August, and September and analyzed for non-structural carbohydrates and the two classes of defensive compounds, phenolics and terpenes. Furthermore, two different bioassays in tubes and boxes were performed using adult I. typographus and I. duplicatus beetles to assess host choice and acceptance. Results: Roofed trees exhibited signs of stress as early as July, resulting in decreased tree trunk and a consequent increase in non-structural carbohydrate content. Defensive metabolites remained largely unaffected except for an increase in diterpenes in September. In bioassays, I. typographus preferred boring into the bark of roofed trees in August in tubes and in September in boxes. This increased tree acceptance correlated with increased levels of soluble carbohydrates in the phloem. I. typographus and I. duplicatus beetles showed higher mobility in boxes in August and September on roofed trees but not in July, even though bark surface temperatures were elevated in roof-covered trees during all three bioassay periods. Conclusion: The study revealed rapid physiological responses of trees to acute drought stress, although not many changes were observed in defense traits. Despite the absence of natural bark beetle attacks, drought trees were more accepted by I. typographus than naturally watered trees. Catalytic co-pyrolysis of two different refinery oily sludge (ROS) samples was conducted to facilitate resource recovery. Non-catalytic pyrolysis in temperatures ranging from 500 to 600°C was performed to determine high oil yields. Higher temperatures enhanced the oil yields up to ~ 24 wt%, while char formation remained unchanged (~ 45%) for S1. Conversely, S2 exhibited a notably lower oil yield (~ 4 wt%) than S1. Pyrolysis oil of S1 consisted of phenolics (~ 50% at 600 °C) whereas hydrocarbons were predominant in S2 oil (~ 80% at 600 °C). Catalytic pyrolysis of S1 did not exhibit a substantial impact on oil yields but the oil composition varied significantly. High hydrocarbons, phenolics, and aromatics were obtained with molecular sieve (MS), metal slag, and ZSM-5, respectively. Catalytic co-pyrolysis of S2 with sawdust (SD) in the presence of MS enhanced the oil yield, and the resulting oil consisted of high hydrocarbons (~ 54%) and aromatics (~ 44%). Plant-derived foods with therapeutic potential have strong connection with both the pharmaceutical and nutraceutical industries. The effectiveness of these therapeutic properties is heavily influenced by the thermal treatment during drying and extraction methods. Traditional convective drying is a very energy incentive and lengthy process. Although some advanced and hybrid drying methods have been developed, these have not been applied in drying of banana inflorescence. In this study, we investigated the effects of freeze-drying (FD) and intermittent microwave convective drying (IMCD), as well as traditional convective oven drying (CD), on the polyphenol profile of banana inflorescence when extracted using the energy-efficient Accelerated Solvent Extraction method (ASE). Our findings revealed that the freeze-dried banana inflorescence powder exhibited the highest extraction of bioactive compounds when using 75% methanol at 100 °C as a solvent. It recovered 2906.3 ± 20.83 mg/100 g of the phenolic compounds and 63.12 ± 0.25% antioxidant activity under the optimal extraction conditions. While IMCD was found to be the second-best drying method in terms of preserving bioactive compounds, its operational time and cost were significantly lower compared to freeze-drying. Furthermore, our study confirmed the presence of medicinal compounds such as gallic acid, protocatechuic acid, caffeic acid, coumaric acid, catechin, ferulic acid, kaempferol, and quercetin in banana inflorescence. The Japanese plum tree (Prunus salicina Lindl.) is mainly cultivated in temperate areas of China and some European countries. Certain amounts of wood (from pruning works) are generated every year from this crop of worldwide commercial significance. The main objective of this work was to value this agricultural woody residue, for which the chemical composition of pruning wood extracts from six Japanese plum cultivars was investigated, and the antiproliferative activity of extracts and pure phenolics present in those extracts was measured. For the chemical characterization, total phenolic content and DPPH radical-scavenging assays and HPLC‒DAD/ESI‒MS analyses were performed, with the procyanidin (−)-ent-epicatechin-(2α→O→7,4α→8)-epicatechin (5) and the propelargonidin (+)-epiafzelechin-(2β→O→7,4β→8)-epicatechin (7) being the major components of the wood extracts. Some quantitative differences were found among plum cultivars, and the content of proanthocyanidins ranged from 1.50 (cv. 'Fortune') to 4.44 (cv. 'Showtime') mg/g of dry wood. Regarding the antitumoral activity, eight wood extracts and four phenolic compounds were evaluated in MCF-7 cells after 48 h of induction, showing the wood extract from cv. Agricultural waste as biomass is a carbon-containing renewable energy source which can be converted into the chemicals and fuels. The identification of chemically valuable compounds in bio-oils obtained from in situ catalytic pyrolysis of sugarcane bagasse is studied. For this purpose, a large-scale auger pyrolysis reactor consisting of a stainless steel cylinder equipped with a screw was used. The favorable biomass feedstock with the vanadium pentoxide (V2O5) nanoparticle catalysts (100:0, 90:10, 80:20, and 70:30) at temperatures of 400, 500, and 600 °C was studied regarding the quality of the chemical composition in obtained bio-oils. Results showed that the catalytic pyrolysis of bagasse in the presence of V2O5 nanoparticles leads to production of the bio-oils rich in compounds, including phenols, acetone, 3,2-butanediol, furan, and D-allose. The yields of phenol, acetone, 3,2-butanediol, and D-allose obtained in bio-oil increased with increase in the pyrolysis temperature in the presence of nanoparticle catalysts and were 20.3, 6.9, 4.3, and 13.2%, respectively. Acids, mainly acetic acid, have the higher fraction in bio-oil. The production of the acetic acid decreased from 47.89 to 43.14% by increasing catalyst ratio (10–30%). Assessing this study indicated that V2O5 could be interesting candidates for incorporation in biomass catalytic pyrolysis which can be used as a useful procedure to convert the agricultural waste into valuable chemicals. In this work, homogenizer-assisted extraction (HAE) and maceration (MAE) were applied on leaves and bark of Ziziphus mauritiana using water and methanol (MeOH) as solvents. HAE and MAE extracts were compared through liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (LC-MS) and evaluating the antioxidant activity, and enzyme inhibition against acetylcholinesterase (AChE), butrylcholinesterase (BChE), tyrosinase, α-amylase, and α-glucosidase. Considering the phytochemical contents and the bioassays results, the HAE extracts resulted favorably with larger content of phenolics and higher antioxidant activity. The MeOH extracts displayed the highest α-amylase inhibitory activity, with HAE MeOH leaf extract leading at 0.78 mmol acarbose equivalent (ACAE)/g. In conclusion, the study highlights that HAE can increase the extraction of phenolic and flavonoid from Z. mauritiana plant materials compared to maceration. Further research could explore the potential therapeutic applications of Z. mauritiana extracts, especially HAE MeOH leaf extracts, for their notable antioxidant and enzyme inhibitory activities, facilitating the way for the development of novel pharmaceutical interventions. Introduction: The industrial processing of corn (Zeamays L.) generates byproducts such as corn silk, straw peels, and straw core, which contribute to adverse environmental impacts. Our study aimed to investigate sustainable approaches for mitigating these effects by evaluating the hypoglycemic potential and mechanisms of ethyl acetate fractions derived from these corn derivatives. Methods: We employed glucose consumption assays, high glucose stress tests, UPLC-QE-Orbitrap-MS analysis, molecular docking, and simulations to assess their components and efficacy. Antioxidant capacities were evaluated using DPPH, FRAP, ABTS, and •OH scavenging assays. Results: Notably, the ethyl acetate fraction extracted from straw peels (SPE) exhibited a high concentration of flavonoids and phenolic compounds along with pronounced hypoglycemic activity and antioxidant capacity. SPE significantly enhanced glucose consumption in insulin-resistant HepG2 cells while protecting HUVECs against damage caused by high glucose levels. Molecular docking analyses confirmed the interaction between active compounds and α-glucosidase as well as α-amylase, while molecular dynamic simulations indicated stability at their binding sites. Discussion: In conclusion, the hypoglycemic and antioxidative properties observed in corn by-products such as straw peels, corn silk, and straw core can be attributed to the inhibition of α-glucosidase and α-amylase activities, coupled with their rich phenolic and flavonoid content. These findings highlight the potential of these by-products for applications in healthcare management and their sustainable utilization, demonstrating significant value in the use of agricultural residues. Introduction: Plants respond to water stress with a variety of physiological and biochemical changes, but their response varies among species, varieties and cultivars. Waterlogging in tomato reduces plant growth, degrade chlorophyll and increase concentration of oxidative parameters. Priming can alleviate stress in plants caused by waterlogging enabling plants to be more tolerant to an additional stress in the current or even subsequent generation. The aim of this study was to evaluate tomato genotypes for their sensitivity to waterlogging stress applied during early vegetative growth and at full flowering stage. Materials and methods: The study included two local genotypes, Trebinjski sitni (GB1126) and Žuti (GB1129), and the reference variety Novosadski jabučar (NJ), which is the variety most commonly used in Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. The activity of class III peroxidase (POX), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) content and malondialdehyde (MDA) content were measured spectrophotometrically, and for quantification of individual phenolic compounds, targeted approach was adopted, using UHPLC/DAD/(-)HESI-MS² instrument (Dionex UltiMate 3000 UHPLC system with a DAD detector, configured with a triple quadrupole mass spectrometer TSQ Quantum Access Max (Thermo Fisher Scientific, Germany)). Results and discussion: Oxidative parameters (H2O2 and MDA) exhibited an increase in content in leaves of tomato plants that underwent waterlogging stress compared to control plants. Moreover, oxidative parameters showed positive correlation with proteins and phenolics content. The obtained correlations can indicate that one of the response strategies of tomato plants to waterlogging is the increased synthesis of proteins and phenolic compounds. The POX activity was not correlated with other parameters except with the polyphenols. A positive correlation was shown between POX activity and the content of phenolic compounds, indicating their independent roles in the removal of ROS. Changes in the phenolic profiles after the exposure of plants to waterlogging stress are recorded, and these changes were more severe in leaves and fruits of GB1129 and NJ genotypes than in GB1126. Thus, genotype GB1126 is the most efficient in maintaining the phenolic profiles of leaves and fruits, and therefore of the nutritive and organoleptic qualities of fruits following the exposure to waterlogging. Also, genotype GB1126 exhibited the ability to maintain the content of oxidative parameters during waterlogging at certain growth stages, implying certain waterlogging tolerance. Conclusion: Waterlogging triggered stress memory but not at all growth stages. The most pronounced stress memory was obtained in fruit samples in the phase of full fruit maturity on the 1st truss. This study shed light on the defense mechanisms of tomato plants to repeated waterlogging stress from the perspectives of the changes in the composition of major phenolics, and pointed to the 5-O-caffeoylquinic acid and rutin as the chemical markers of the waterlogging stress tolerance in tomato. However, it remains to be determined whether this modulation has a positive or negative effect on the overall plant metabolism. Background and Aims: Traditional indigenous system of medicine employed many Chenopodium species to treat a wide range of ailments. Therefore, the current study aims to evaluate the phenolic content, flavonoid content, and antioxidant capacity of the species Chenopodium album and Chenopodium pumilio. Methods: Phenolics and flavonoid content were quantified using spectrophotometric techniques. The antioxidant activity of Chenopodium extracts was evaluated by assaying ferric reducing antioxidant power, 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical scavenging activity, phosphomolybdenum reducing power, ferrous ion chelating activity, hydrogen peroxide radical scavenging activity, hydroxyl radical scavenging activity, deoxyribose degradation activity, and β-carotene bleaching activity. Results: In C. album and C. pumilio, total phenolic concentration was 17.5–23.8 and 13.3–25.3 mg tannic acid equivalent/g, respectively, and flavonoid content was 0.21–0.85 mg and 0.10–0.89 mg quercetin equivalent/g, respectively. Thus, C. pumilio had a higher content of phenolics and flavonoids than C. album. However, comparison of extracts in different solvents showed that ethanolic and aqueous extracts exhibited higher phenolics and flavonoid content than other solvent systems. The antioxidant capability of the species, determined by antioxidant assays, varied with the species evaluated and the solvents used for extraction. Remarkably, the correlation coefficient of different antioxidant assays with the phenolics and flavonoid content in both species showed discrepancy. Conclusion: Ethanolic and aqueous extracts of the Chenopodium species studied had higher phenolics, flavonoids, and free radical scavenging activity than methanolic and acetonic extracts. The species of the brown macroalgal genus Sargassum are distributed globally and contain many bioactive compounds. In this study, ultrasound‐assisted extraction (UAE) was applied to obtain phenolic compounds with strong antioxidant activity from Sargassum carpophyllum collected along the coastline of Weizhou Island in the South China Sea. The influence of different variables such as the solid–liquid ratio (1:5–1:30 g · mL−1), ultrasonic power (160–280 W), duty circle ratio (DCR, 1/3–1/1), and ethanol concentration (30% to ~90%) were studied using a single factor design. The extraction kinetics were investigated using the Peleg model and second‐order kinetics model, and the second‐order model described the extraction procedure better than the Peleg model. Total phenol content (TPC) values of 3.316, 2.964, 2.741, and 3.665 mg phloroglucinol (PHG) · g−1 algae were achieved at a higher solid–liquid ratio (1:30 g · mL−1), higher ultrasonic power (280 W), a higher DCR (1/1), and a moderate ethanol concentration (50%), respectively. However, a slightly different result was observed in the extract obtained, with total phenol contents (TPCextract) of 52.99, 65.00, 46.22, and 55.10 mg PHG · g−1 extract and DPPH radical scavenging activity (IC50) of 0.096, 0.066, 0.131, and 0.136 mg extract · mL−1 observed at 50% ethanol, 1:5 g m· mL−1, 2/3 DCR, and 200 W respectively. All variables studied influenced the extraction kinetics by altering the extraction rate and the TPC at equilibrium. As for the bioactivities in the extract, a larger solid–liquid ratio and greater ultrasonic power may not contribute because of their ability to extract non‐phenolic components simultaneously, leading to reduced overall bioactivities. The results of the present study provide essential information for future UAE process design and optimization for extracting phenolics from S. carpophyllum through mathematical modeling and could be regarded as important reference for obtaining value‐added products from other macroalgae species. Invasive species have historically disrupted environments by outcompeting, displacing, and extirpating native species, resulting in significant environmental and economic damage. Developing approaches to detect the presence of invasive species, favorable habitats for their establishment, and predicting their potential spread are underutilized management strategies to effectively protect the environment and the economy. Spotted lanternfly (SLF, Lycorma delicatula) is a phloem-feeding planthopper native to China that poses a severe threat to horticultural and forest products in the United States. Tools are being developed to contain the spread and damage caused by SLF; however, methods to rapidly detect novel infestations or low-density populations are lacking. Vegetation spectroscopy is an approach that can represent vegetation health through changes in the reflectance and absorption of radiation based on plant physiochemical status. Here, we hypothesize that SLF infestations change the spectral and chemical characteristics of tree canopies. To test this hypothesis, we used a full range spectroradiometer to sample canopy foliage of silver maple (Acer saccharinum) and red maple (Acer rubrum) trees in a common garden in Berks County, Pennsylvania that were exposed to varying levels of SLF infestation. Foliar spectral profiles separated between SLF infestation levels, and the magnitude of separation was greater for the zero-SLF control compared with higher infestation levels. We found the red-edge and portions of the NIR and SWIR regions were most strongly related to SLF infestation densities and that corresponding changes in vegetation indexes related to levels of chlorophyll were influenced by SLF infestations, although we found no change in foliar levels of chlorophyll. We found no influence of SLF densities on levels of primary metabolites (i.e., pigments, nonstructural carbohydrates, carbon, and nitrogen), but did find an increase in the phenolic compound ferulic acid in response to increasing SLF infestations; this response was only in red maple, suggesting a possible species-specific response related to SLF feeding. By identifying changes in spectral and chemical properties of canopy leaves in response to SLF infestation, we can link them together to potentially better understand how trees respond to SLF feeding pressure and more rapidly identify SLF infestations. • Drought stress is a major ecological constraint that resulted in the restricted growth of plants. • Ascorbic acid has an antioxidant property and acts as an important cofactor in plant hormones biosynthesis, including ethylene (ET), salicylic acid (SA), abscisic acid (ABA), and gibberellic acid (GA 3). • Ascorbic acid as foliar spray supported the barley plant growth under drought stress to ameliorate the adverse effects of stress by maintaining growth, relative water contents, and osmotic adjustment through proline, phenolics accumulation and antioxidant enzyme activities. Drought is one of the most devastating environmental stress which affects the plant growth and yield in several ways. Grain crops including barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) are badly affected due to shortage of water all over the world. Ascorbic acid acts as an important cofactor in plant hormones biosynthesis and its exogenous application has been shown to confer tolerance against biotic and abiotic stresses. In the present research, the ability of ascorbic acid to increase drought stress tolerance was investigated in three barley genotypes, a drought-resistant (V3 = Jau-Haider 93) and two drought-sensitive (V1 = 92,044 and V2 = 92,112) grown in pots under field conditions. Two levels of water, control i.e., with adequate irrigation and drought stress with 60 % of field capacity were applied. Ascorbic acid was applied as a foliar spray (1 mM) after every 7 days interval at 3rd leaf stage. In the present study, imposition of drought stress significantly reduced the growth, physiological and biochemical parameters in all genotypes of barley. Among all the varieties, V3 showed the highest increase (18.2 µmolm−2s−1) in net photosynthetic rate when treated with ascorbic acid. Similarly, ascorbic acid increased transpiration rate in V3 with a value of 1.42, 1.45, 1.18, and 1.28 µmolm−2s−1 in control, control with ascorbic acid, drought stress, and drought stress with ascorbic acid, respectively. During the present investigation polyamines i.e., putrescene, spermidine and spermine was highest (117.22, 99.12 and 107.02 nmol·g−1 FW, respectively) in V1 plants treated with ascorbic acid without drought stress. Proline, protein and carbohydrate contents was also increased significantly in barley by ascorbic acid application as compared to control plants. V1 showed the highest peroxidase, catalase and superoxide dismutase (17.23, 39.12, 17.22 Umg−1 of proteins, respectively) in plants treated with ascorbic acid as compared to control without ascorbic acid treatment. Ascorbic acid as foliar spray supported the plant growth under drought stress to ameliorate the adverse effects of stress by maintaining the relative water contents and osmotic adjustment by enhancing antioxidant enzymes, polyamines, proline and phenolics contents. Dragon fruits have abundant nutritional and antioxidant properties. High temperatures limit the growth and production of dragon fruits. Hemin can effectively alleviate abiotic stress in plants. However, the regulatory effect of Hemin on dragon fruit under heat stress remains unclear. In this study, we explored the impacts of foliar application of Hemin on dragon fruit size, yield and quality during the high temperatures of the summer season. In this experiment, dragon fruit variety 'Jindu No. 1' was used as material and treated with three Hemin concentrations, i.e., H1: 1 μmol.L−1, H2: 10 μmol.L−1, H3: 100 μmol.L−1, compared with CK: control. The results show that exogenous Hemin increased the single fruit weight, yield, fruit shape index and edible rate. It also improved pericarp L* value, a* value, C* and decreased ho, improving the peel colour; exogenous Hemin enhanced soluble solids content and phenolic compounds content and antioxidant enzyme activities in the pulp of dragon fruit. In addition, exogenous Hemin increased the content of chlorophyll content in dragon fruit stems. Differential metabolites determined by metabolomic assay also indicated that Hemin significantly increased the content of active substances such as selagin. Additionally, the Hemin treatment H2 also activated the activity of antioxidant enzymes such as superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD), catalase (CAT), and ascorbate peroxidase (APX), which helps to mitigate the effects of high temperatures on dragon fruit. The current findings strongly advocate that H2 treatment may effectively counteract the adverse effects of heat stress by regulating the morph-physiological and antioxidant traits. Improving the productivity of medicinal and aromatic species via eco-friendly approaches is imperative worldwide because of their therapeutic impacts. Biostimulants have been recognized among the best cultural practices in the last few decades. Among them, bee honey (BH) and ginger extract (GE) are new sources of multifunctional biostimulants that positively influence plant growth and development. However, there are currently no detailed reports on the impacts of BH or GE as promising growth and yield enhancers for medicinal and aromatic species. Also, the mechanism involved in stimulating growth and essential oil content with BH or GE is still unidentified. This work was, therefore, undertaken to analyze the impact of BH and GE on the growth, productivity, and essential oil content of sage plants (Salvia officinalis L.). Sage plants were sprayed monthly for three months with the same volume of BH (0, 5, 10, and 15 g L−1), GE (0, 5, 10, and 15 mg L−1), or tap water, which was used as a control. BH or GE application improved the plant height, branch number, herb yield, total chlorophyll content, total phenolics, and antioxidant capacity relative to the controls, more so with GE. Intriguingly, the essential oil percentage, oil yield, and oil constituents were enhanced by BH and GE. In this respect, the highest levels of biostimulants, particularly GE, were more effective. On a percentage basis, the essential oil yield per hectare was largely increased by 127.91 and 138.89% with GE (10 g L−1) in both seasons relative to the controls. The contents of IAA, GA3, and CK in THE sage leaves were substantially increased by BH and GE, and higher levels of both biostimulants and GE were more effective. The nutrient levels of N, P, K, Fe, Zn, and Mg were also elevated by BH and GE compared with the untreated plants. These results suggest that BH or GE application could be a promising biostimulant for improving the productivity of sage and provide a new understanding of their mechanisms in this aspect. Pseudotrimezia juncifolia (Klatt) Lovo & A. Gil (Iridaceae) is a popularly known species with primarily ornamental economic interest. It has traditional uses as purgative, in conditions related to the menstrual cycle, for blood purification, as wound healing, and as anti-inflammatory. The anti-inflammatory and antinociceptive activities of the decoction from its aerial stems, corms, and stamens are described here with dereplication studies on LC-MS/MS supported by the GNPS platform, where phenolic compounds were annotated and correlated with its biological activity. The decoction was evaluated in chemical (formalin and capsaicin) and thermal (hot plate) induced nociception or carrageenan-induced inflammation in mice. Decoction (at 10, 30, or 100 mg/kg doses) significantly reduced formalin- or capsaicin-induced nociception. All doses also demonstrated an antinociceptive effect in the hot plate model increasing the time the animal spent in responding to thermal signal. Naloxone partially reversed the antinociceptive effect. An anti-inflammatory effect was observed since a reduction in cell migration, protein extravasation interleukin-1, and tumor necrosis factor production induced by carrageenan in the subcutaneous air pouch was quantified. Metabolomic analyses showed a predominance of phenolic substances, mainly flavonoids and chlorogenic acids. The brown midrib bmr6 and bmr12 mutants of sorghum (Sorghum bicolor) have alterations to the phenylpropanoid pathway impairing the activity of cinnamyl alcohol dehydrogenase (CAD) and/or caffeate5/hydroxyferulate O‐methyl transferase (COMT) enzymes, which inhibit lignin synthesis. Interestingly, these phenylpropanoids can also act as sunscreen compounds in plants and potentially attenuate ultraviolet radiation. We examined the effects of ultraviolet‐B (UV‐B; 280–320 nm) exclusion on growth, cell‐wall constituents and UV‐screening abilities of bmr6, bmr12, a double mutant (bmr6 bmr12; dm) and wild‐type (WT) genotypes of S. bicolor. Plants were grown in a UV‐transparent greenhouse under filters that either transmitted 2.8% (Mylar) or 90% (Aclar) of UV‐B. The greenhouse experiment was a 2 × 4 (UV treatment × genotype) complete factorial design. Sorghum grown under reduced UV were 23% taller and had 22% fewer leaves. Among genotypes, the WT plants were 5%–12% taller than the bmr6, bmr12 and dm mutants. The near‐ambient UV‐B treatment group was more effective at UV screening and had a 16% higher UV‐screening effectiveness than those under reduced UV‐B. Sorghum plants with the bmr6 and dm genotypes had 8%–19% higher UV‐shield than the bmr12 and WT. Plants grown under the reduced UV‐B treatment had 5% less hemicellulose and 6% more cellulose in their cell walls. There were no overall treatment effects on bulk soluble phenolics, chlorophyll fluorescence (Fv/Fm) or lignin concentrations. These results are a possible indication that the bmr mutants of S. bicolor have a varied response to UV‐B exclusion due to alterations in the phenylpropanoid pathway leading to redistribution of metabolites. Garlic is a vegetable with numerous pro-health properties, showing high antioxidant capacity, and cytotoxicity for various malignant cells. The inhibition of cell proliferation by garlic is mainly attributed to the organosulfur compounds (OSCs), but it is far from obvious which constituents of garlic indeed participate in the antioxidant and cytotoxic action of garlic extracts. This study aimed to obtain insight into this question by examining the antioxidant activity and cytotoxicity of six OSCs and five phenolics present in garlic. Three common assays of antioxidant activity were employed (ABTS● decolorization, DPPH● decolorization, and FRAP). Cytotoxicity of both classes of compounds to PEO1 and SKOV-3 ovarian cancer cells, and MRC-5 fibroblasts was compared. Negligible antioxidant activities of the studied OSCs (alliin, allicin, S-allyl-D-cysteine, allyl sulfide, diallyl disulfide, and diallyl trisulfide) were observed, excluding the possibility of any significant contribution of these compounds to the total antioxidant capacity (TAC) of garlic extracts estimated by the commonly used reductive assays. Comparable cytotoxic activities of OSCs and phenolics (caffeic, p-coumaric, ferulic, gallic acids, and quercetin) indicate that both classes of compounds may contribute to the cytotoxic action of garlic. Early‐stage responses of Brassica juncea, B. napus and B. oleracea during black spot disease and the development of Alternaria brassicicola were evaluated. Infection of plant cells by the fungus occurred mainly through direct penetration or by appressoria and, rarely, stomata in B. juncea and B. oleracea; in B. napus, penetration was mostly direct. The process of conidial germination, germ tubes and appressoria formation on a leaf surface was correlated with the post‐inoculation time and host species (p < 0.05). Changes in the leaf surface were observed at successful infection sites as bright, wax‐deprived areas. Significant differences in progression of infection between Brassica species were observed, with B. oleracea being the most susceptible and B. napus the least. Accumulation of superoxide anion radicals and hydrogen peroxide was not only observed in plant cells, but also in A. brassicicola germ tubes and appressoria at 8 and 12 h post‐inoculation (hpi). Enhanced production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and lipid peroxidation during infection triggered diverse patterns of enzymatic and non‐enzymatic antioxidant activities and phenolic compound contents in response to A. brassicicola. In each Brassica species, a different antioxidant was the most active. With their antioxidant properties, phenolic compounds also played an essential role in these interactions. This phenomenon could be related to the disparate levels of susceptibility of the Brassica species to A. brassicicola; for example, the most susceptible, B. oleracea, showed high ROS accumulation with decreasing tendency during disease progression, unchanged phenolics content, and the highest catalase activity, differentiating it from B. juncea and B. napus. Prinsepia utilis Royle, native to the Himalayas, is esteemed in Chinese and Indian folk medicine for its diverse medicinal benefits, targeting arthritis, pain relief, bone disorders, and joint discomfort. This study examined the 25% aqueous methanol extract of P. utilis leaves using UPLC‐Q‐TOF‐MS/MS, identifying 78 metabolites, 76 of which were reported for the first time in P. utilis. These included 64 phenolics represented by 56 flavonoids, 5 phenolic acids, 3 phenolic glycosides, 4 terpenoids, 2 lignan glycosides, and 8 other compounds, expanding the knowledge of its chemical composition. These findings lay a foundation for further research, providing insights into potential bioactive compounds and opening avenues for applications in natural product drug discovery, traditional medicine, and nutraceutical development, leveraging the plant's established traditional uses. Objective: In our study, we researched the chemical composition of Linaria corifolia Desf. We also tested in vitro antioxidant, and anticholinesterase activities of different extracts, and compounds from L. corifolia. Methods: We isolated from ethyl acetate and n-butanol extracts of L. corifolia aerial parts. We used various spectroscopic methods. We also compared the results with data in the literature. This allowed us to determine the structure of the compounds. We used different spectroscopic methods and comparisons with literature data to determine the structure of the compounds. We evaluated the antioxidant activities of 20% aqueous methanol, ethyl acetate, and n-butanol extracts using DPPH, ABTS Radical Scavenging Effect, and CUPRAC Assay, and also examined total phenol and flavonoid contents. We used Ellman's method to find the cholinesterase inhibitor activities of the extracts, and isolated compounds. Results: We isolated 6 compounds in ethyl acetate and n-butanol extracts. These compounds have terpenoid (iridoid glycosides), and phenolics (flavonoid, and phenylpropanoid structures). We isolated linariin and acteoside (verbascoside) from ethyl acetate. We isolated antirrhinoside, 6-ß-Hydroxyantirrhide, catalpol, and aucubin from n-butanol extract. The ethyl acetate extract was most active in all antioxidant methods due to its high phenolic content. In contrast to phenolic content, n-butanol extract had more flavonoids. The ethyl acetate extract had higher acetylcholinesterase inhibitory activity at 200 and 400 μg/ml. Linariin had the highest acetylcholinesterase inhibitory effect among the pure compounds. The extracts and pure compounds inhibited butyrylcholinesterase less than acetylcholinesterase. Conclusion: The isolated compounds are new compounds for the L. corifolia plant. The plant's cholinesterase inhibitor activity was investigated for the first time. Natural products include inorganic as well as organic compounds. Living organisms face constant challenges in acquiring essential metal ions and getting rid of non-essential ones with toxic actions. They employ an extracellular biochemistry in these tasks and use it to engage in a chemical warfare against invaders and competitors by either increasing or decreasing the availability of metal ions for maintaining their welfare in aquatic or terrestrial ecological niches. To control mutualistic, cambialistic or parasitic symbiosis with other organisms they use a remarkably rich suite of secreted bioactive molecules with ligand donor atoms for metal binding. This overview discusses the interactions of these extracellular natural products with a multitude of metal ions in the periodic system of the elements. It focuses mainly on metallophores and metal ionophores secreted from bacteria, fungi, and plants, but metal-carrying cofactors and other chelating agents will also be mentioned in the context of related functions and with an intent to categorize. The intracellular fate of the metal ions and the controlled pathways for the biosynthesis, secretion, uptake, biodegradation or recycling of the secreted natural products that interact with metal ions will not be covered. Metallophores make extracellular metal ions available via delivery to specific transporters and unavailable to competing organisms, especially pathogens, though some invaders have developed ways to compete efficiently for metal ions. The classic concept of siderophores, carriers of iron(III) ions, is extended here to specific and broad-band metallophores for metal ions such as copper (chalkophores), zinc (zincophores), and yet others. Metal ionophores, in contrast, transport metal ions through biological membranes. There is a wide variety of chemical structures for either metallophores or metal ionophores. Together with physicochemical investigations of metal complexation und conditions mimicking the natural environment, “omics” mining and mapping the diversity of chemotypes is an on-going effort with analytic, genetic, and bioinformatic tools and comes together in defining the metallometabolome, which combines the metabolome and the metallome. Investigations are highly multidisciplinary, include an important, but academically infrequently crossed bridge between the biosciences (biochemistry) and the earth sciences (geochemistry), define significant applications in the pharmaceutical/medical sciences regarding immune modulation and the control of virulence at the host-pathogen interface, and have implications for the nutritional/toxicological and environmental/ecological sciences. Halophytic plants possess a huge range of active constituents and medicinal benefits. In this study, extracts (water, ethanol, ethyl acetate, dichloromethane, and n-hexane) of two halophytes of the genus Petrosimonia (P. brachiata and P. nigdeensis) were investigated for their phytochemical profiles and pharmacological properties. The phytochemical profiles of both species were investigated using an untargeted metabolomics approach based on high-resolution mass spectrometry. The two species show different polyphenolic profiles and these are influenced by the different extraction solvents used. The same extracts were used for different bioactivity assays. The results show that all extracts yielded total flavonoid and phenolic contents of 11.14–24.22 mg GAE/g and 3.15–22.03 mg RE/g, respectively. While extracts of both species demonstrated a radical scavenging ability in the ABTS assay (16.12–98.02 mg TE/g), only the polar and moderately polar extracts (water, ethanol, and ethyl acetate) showed scavenging potential in the DPPH assay (4.74–16.55 mg TE/g). A reducing potential was also displayed by all extracts in the CUPRAC and FRAP assays (26.02–80.35 mg TE/g and 31.70–67.69 mg TE/g, respectively). The total antioxidant capacity of the extracts ranged from 0.24 to 2.17 mmol TE/g, and the metal chelating activity ranged from 14.74 to 33.80 mg EDTAE/g. The water extracts possessed a higher metal chelating power than the other extracts. All extracts acted as inhibitors of acetylcholinesterase (0.16–3.85 mg GALAE/g) and amylase (0.11–1.28 mmol ACAE/g). Moreover, apart from the water extracts, the other extracts also showed anti-butyrylcholinesterase activity (0.73–2.86 mg GALAE/g), as well as anti-tyrosinase (36.74–61.40 mg KAE/g) and anti-glucosidase (2.37–2.73 mmol ACAE/g) potential. In general, the water extracts were found to be weak inhibitors of the tested enzymes, while the ethanol extracts mostly showed an inhibitory effect. The obtained findings revealed the antioxidant and enzyme inhibitory properties of these two species and demonstrated that the solvent type used affected the pharmacological properties of the extracts and hence, can be useful to further investigate the active constituents yielded in the extracts and understand the mechanisms involved. In this study, Chinese cabbage (Brassica rapa L. ssp. pekinensis) roots were solvent fractioned, and their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects were investigated. The antioxidant capacity (DPPH and ABTS radicals, oxygen radical absorbance capacity, and cupric reducing antioxidant capacity) was the highest in the ethyl acetate fraction (CREE) at 26.74, 69.81, 253.23, and 54.77 mg TEAC/g, respectively. The inflammatory responses were evaluated in RAW 264.7 cells stimulated with lipopolysaccharide (1 µg/mL). CREE decreased nitric oxide and prostaglandin E2 by 53.37% and 16.30%, respectively. Pro-inflammatory cytokines such as tumor necrosis factor-α, interleukin-1β, and interleukin-6 were inhibited by 36.85%, 62.99%, and 54.78%, respectively. Furthermore, inducible nitric oxide synthase, cyclooxygenase-2, and interleukin-6 genes were inhibited by 43.38%, 24.23%, and 80.85%, respectively. Plants produce secondary chemicals that may vary along with latitude due to changing abiotic and biotic stress gradients and local environmental conditions. Teasing apart the individual and combined effects of these different abiotic, such as soil nutrients, and biotic factors, such as soil biota and herbivores, on secondary chemicals is critical for understanding plant responses to changing environments. We conducted an experiment at different latitudes in China, using tallow tree (Triadica sebifera) seedlings sourced from a population at 31° N. These seedlings were cultivated in gardens located at low, middle and high latitudes, with either local soil or soil from the original seed collection site (origin soil). The seedlings were exposed to natural levels of aboveground herbivores or had them excluded. Plant secondary chemicals (both foliar and root), aboveground herbivores and soil characteristics were measured. Results showed that most leaf and root secondary metabolites depended on the interaction of the experimental site and soil type. Leaf and root phenolic and tannin concentrations were higher at the middle latitude site, especially in the origin soil. Root and foliar flavonoid concentrations increased when aboveground herbivores were excluded. Microbial communities depended strongly on soil treatment. The different responses of tannins versus flavonoids suggest that these two chemical classes differ in their responses to the varying abiotic and biotic factors in these sites along latitudes. Taken together, our results emphasize the importance of considering the interactive effects of local environmental conditions, soil properties and herbivory in regulating plant chemical defenses. Natural functional and bioactive compounds extracted from agricultural wastes using green techniques have attracted great attention due to their health benefits, numerous potential applications and less environmental impacts. Therefore, this study aimed to co-optimize the processes of ultrasound-microwave assisted extraction (UMAE) and enzyme-ultrasound assisted extraction (EUAE) to simultaneously maximize the yields of polysaccharides (PSY) and phenolics (TPC) from mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana L.) peels with the aid of Box-Behnken design. The chemical structure of the polysaccharides and the bioactive activities of the phenolics extracted by two methods were also determined and compared. At the optimal conditions, the results revealed that UMAE produced a less amount of polysaccharides (18.4%) but required a shorter total treatment time (66 min) than EUAE. In contrast, EUAE generated much higher PSY (32.86%) and had an additional advantage of using the medium with less acidity (pH 4.7 as compared with pH 2). Both approaches resulted to a quite equivalent amount of phenolics (104–111 mg gallic acid equivalent per g dry weight). The FTIR spectra explored that the UMAE polysaccharides had a similar chemical structure with commercial pectin while the EUAE ones had distinguished peaks, appropriately related to the complex network structure of rhamnogalacturonan, homogalacturonan and polygalacturonic acid. On the other hand, both UMAE and EMAE phenolic extracts had similarly high inhibitory effect against α-glucosidase with their IC50 of 1.16–1.18 mg/mL. However, the EMAE phenolic extract had nearly doubled 2, 2-diphenyl-1-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) scavenging activity (4080 μg TE/mL extract) as compared to the UMAE one. These findings conclude that polysaccharides and polyphenols from both extraction methods could be used as ingredients for nutraceutical products and food processing with desirable characteristics. In this study, the effects of microwave (540, 720 and 900 W) and oven (120, 150 and 230°C) roasting techniques on the total phenolics, flavonoids, antioxidant capacity, polyphenolic and fatty acid results of sunflower seed and oils were investigated. Total phenol (except oven 150°C), flavonoid (except oven 120°C) contents and antioxidant activity values of sunflower seeds and oils subjected to oven and microwave heat treatment decreased compared to the control. Total phenolic, total flavonoids and antioxidant activities were higher in MRS oil than ORS oil. Individual phenolic constituent in both seed and oil samples from ORS and MRS showed significant (p < 0.05) changes to the control (non‐roasted seed and its oil). A general increase in the phenolic components of seeds and oils was observed with oven and microwave roasting compared to the control. Oleic acid values (%) of the oil extracted from seeds roasted in oven and microwave systems were recorded to be between 23.76 (120°C) and 29.41% (150°C) to 24.32 (540 W) and 26.10% (720 W), respectively. Linoleic acid values of the oils obtained from seeds roasted in oven and microwave systems varied to be between 57.01 (150°C) and 65.89% (120°C) to 60.70 (720 W) and 65.26% (540 W), respectively. As a result of the applied heat treatment, while the linoleic acid values of the oil samples decreased, an increase was observed in the palmitic, stearic and oleic acid values of the oil. Heterotis rountidifolia (Sm.) Jacq. Fel, is employed in Nigeria traditional medicine for the treatment of various diseases. The study investigated the antioxidant, mineral composition and antimicrobial activities of aerial part of Heterotis rotundifolia using standard procedures. The proximate composition on dry matter basis showed high carbohydrate (48.41%) and low lipid (0.77%) contents while mineral content revealed that sodium (5.68 mg/100 g) and zinc (4.64 mg/100 g) were the highest. The total caloric value per 100 g was 260.93 kcal. Methanol (ME) fraction exhibited the highest radical scavenging (EC50 = 59.36 µg/mL) and reducing (EC50 = 76.54 µg/mL) activity. Contents of total flavonoids and phenolics were highest in ME and ethyl acetate (EAE) fractions (39.2 mg GAE/g and 183.5 mg RE/g, respectively), while hexane (HE) fraction showed the lowest radical scavenging, ferric reducing and nitric oxide assay (EC50 = 268.56, 87.86, and 98.30 µg/mL, respectively). The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal/fungicidal concentration (MBC/MFC) against various bacterial and fungal strains using tube dilution method showed strong activity at MIC of 50 mg/mL depicted by n-HE fraction, though lower MBC of 37.5 mg/mL by ME fraction made the ME fraction of better potentials. Gas chromatography-mass spectrum (GC-MS) analysis of the ME fraction revealed 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural (16.87%), Methyl 6-O-[1-methylpropyl]-β-D-galactopyranoside (16.07%), 4H-Pyran-4-one,2,3-dihydro-3,5-dihydroxy- (8.28%), 6-methyl-β-D-glucopyranose, 1,6-anhydro- (6.56%), 2-heptanol (6.82%), stigmastan-3,5-diene (4.32%) amongst others. This research demonstrates that extract and fractions from aerial part of H. rotundifolia possesses antioxidant, antimicrobial and nutritive potentials, albeit with generally weak antifungal activity and, may be attributed to the presence of its phytochemical constituents. Olive oil extraction by two-phase systems generates a by-product called "alperujo" which presents several difficulties for its valorization. The present work evaluated an industrial approach, based on the application of thermal treatments to alperujo followed by solid/liquid separation using standard two-phase olive oil mill equipment. Treatments consisted of the thermo-malaxation of alperujo at 70 °C for 45 or 90 min, with or without acid addition, followed by solid/liquid separation in an industrial decanter. The solid was characterized concerning subsequent use for composting, while total and hydrophilic phenolics were analyzed in liquid for their recovery. Additionally, a laboratory-scale trial to compare phenolic purification by ethylic acetate extraction with chromatographic procedures was also included. The static respiration index showed that solid fractions presented higher susceptibility to biodegradation processes than raw alperujo. The phenolic content of treated liquid fractions was higher than in raw alperujo. Total phenolics were maximum at the longest exposure time without acid addition, while hydrophilic phenolics were highest at the shortest exposure time in acidified samples. The use of non-ionic resins seemed attractive for obtaining highly concentrated phenolic fractions. Abscisic acid (ABA) is a well-known phytohormone that initiates seed dormancy. This is the first study elucidating the variability and relationship in the accumulation of phenolics, melatonin, and momilactones A (MA) and B (MB) during a rice (Oryza sativa L. var. Koshihikari, Akisakari, and Akiroman) seed dormancy process treated by ABA with concentrations of 0 (control), 10, 50, and 100 µM over 8 days. Accordingly, increased concentrations of ABA resulted in an extended dormancy period of rice seeds, along with reducing fresh weight while maintaining stable dry weight in all varieties. ABA treatment elevated total phenolic (TPC) and flavonoid (TFC) contents. Particularly, quantities of ferulic and cinnamic acids were enhanced, in line with the promoted antioxidant capacities of ABA-treated rice seeds. Momilactone contents were increased (3.8% to 32.6% for MA and 16.3% to 31.3% for MB) during the extension of rice seed dormancy regulated by ABA. Notably, the accumulation tendency of MA and MB under ABA effects was consistent with that of melatonin, a phytohormone associated with seed dormancy prolongation. The finding implies that MA and MB may play a role alongside melatonin in signaling the extended dormancy of rice seeds through the ABA pathway. Research into non-thermal wine processing technologies is constantly evolving due to the increasing trend towards high-quality, minimally processed, and preservative-free wines. Technologies such as high-power ultrasound, high hydrostatic pressure, pulsed electric field, ultra-high pressure homogenization, and, more recently, cold plasma are some of the best examples currently being explored. This article provides an overview of the latest scientific research into these five non-thermal technologies and their current status in relation to winemaking. By exploring the potential applications of these technologies, it becomes possible to enhance extraction, shorten maceration time, inactivate microorganisms and oxidative enzymes, reduce the addition of chemical additives, accelerate aging, improve wine quality, and much more. However, further experiments are necessary to better comprehend the short- and long-term impacts on the overall quality of the wines produced, especially in terms of sensory characteristics and consumer acceptance. Optimizing processing conditions and scaling up are also of paramount importance to ensure better performance of these technologies at the various stages of winemaking. AbstractThe genus Artemisia belongs to the Asteraceae family, known for its many pharmacological properties. This study focuses on the chemical characterization of two Algerian species: Artemisia absinthium (AA) and Artemisia herba-alba (AHA). Samples from eight different stations were subjected to four extraction procedures using hexane as solvent: maceration, reflux, Soxhlet, and ultrasound. After determining the yield, total phenolics were quantified in the 32 samples. In addition, the antioxidant activity of the extracts was evaluated by three tests (i.e. TAC, DPPH, and β-Carotene assays). The results showed that the reflux method was able to isolate low levels of phenols but presented a better antioxidant activity, compared to the other extraction protocols. Regarding the two plant species, A. absinthium revealed a higher antioxidant power. GC–MS analysis led us to identify a total of 68 chemical constituents from all hexane samples of the two species. Extracts were mainly dominated by fatty acids (FAs), monoterpenoids and sesquiterpenoids, without any significant variability based on the applied method. HPLC-DAD analysis proved that the highest content in artemisinin was present in A. absinthium extracts obtained by Soxhlet, with an amount estimated at 15.09 ± 0.62 µg per mg of plant material, followed by ultrasound extraction. The anaerobic digestion of aqueous condensate from fast pyrolysis is a promising technology for enhancing carbon and energy recovery from waste. Syngas, another pyrolysis product, could be integrated as a co-substrate to improve process efficiency. However, limited knowledge exists on the co-fermentation of pyrolysis syngas and aqueous condensate by anaerobic cultures and the effects of substrate toxicity. This work investigates the ability of mesophilic and thermophilic anaerobic mixed cultures to co-ferment syngas and the aqueous condensate from either sewage sludge or polyethylene plastics pyrolysis in semi-batch bottle fermentations. It identifies inhibitory concentrations for carboxydotrophic and methanogenic reactions, examines specific component removal and assesses energy recovery potential. The results show successful co-fermentation of syngas and aqueous condensate components like phenols and N-heterocycles. However, the characteristics and load of the aqueous condensates affected process performance and product formation. The toxicity, likely resulting from the synergistic effect of multiple toxicants, depended on the PACs' composition. At 37 °C, concentrations of 15.6 gCOD/gVSS and 7.8 gCOD/gVSS of sewage sludge-derived aqueous condensate inhibited by 50% carboxydotrophic and methanogenic activity, respectively. At 55 °C, loads between 3.9 and 6.8 gCOD/gVSS inhibited by 50% both reactions. Polyethylene plastics condensate showed higher toxicity, with 2.8 gCOD/gVSS and 0.3 gCOD/gVSS at 37 °C decreasing carboxydotrophic and methanogenic rates by 50%. At 55 °C, 0.3 gCOD/gVSS inhibited by 50% CO uptake rates and methanogenesis. Increasing PAC loads reduced methane production and promoted short-chain carboxylates formation. The recalcitrant components in sewage sludge condensate hindered e-mol recovery, while plastics condensate showed high e-mol recoveries despite the stronger toxicity. Even with challenges posed by substrate toxicity and composition variations, the successful conversion of syngas and aqueous condensates highlights the potential of this technology in advancing carbon and energy recovery from anthropogenic waste streams. Exploring host plant resistance and elevating plant defense mechanisms through the application of exogenous elicitors stands as a promising strategy for integrated pest management. The fall armyworm, a pernicious menace to grain crops in tropical and subtropical regions, stands as a formidable threat due to its capacity for devastation and a wide-ranging spectrum of host plants. There is no literature regarding artificially induced resistance in maize against fall armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda) by exogenous application of phytohormones. The present investigation was performed to evaluate the role of jasmonic acid (JA) and salicylic acid (SA) on two maize hybrids namely FH-1046 and YH-1898 against fall armyworm. Results showed that plant height, biomass and lengths, fresh and dry weight of root shoot which decreased with armyworm infestation improved with phytohormonal application. JA treatment resulted in a higher increase in all attributes as compared to SA treatment. Improvement in relative water contents, photosynthetic pigments and pronounced levels of phenol and proline accumulation were observed in infested plants after JA treatment. Infested plants recovered from oxidative stress as JA application activated and increased the antioxidant enzyme activity of superoxide dismutase, peroxidase and polyphenol oxidase activity in both FH-1046 and YH-1898. The oxidative stress reduction in infested plants after JA treatment was also evident from a fair decrease in MDA and H2O2 in both varieties. The SA and JA mediated genes expression was studied and it was found that in FH1046 maize cultivar, JA dependent genes, particularly marker genes PR1 and Lox5 were highly expressed along with TPS10 and BBT12. Whereas SPI, WRKY28, ICS and PAL were shown to be activated upon SA application. Evidently, both JA and SA elicited a robust defensive response within the maize plants against the voracious S. frugiperda, which in consequence exerted a discernible influence over the pest's developmental trajectory and physiological dynamics. A decrease in detoxification enzyme activity of the insects was observed after feeding on treated plants. Moreover, it was recorded that the survival and weight gain of FAW feeding on phytohormone treated maize plants also decelerated. In conclusion, FH-1046 was found to be more tolerant than YH-1898 against fall armyworm infestation and 1 mM JA was more effective than 1 mM SA for alleviation of fall armyworm stress. Therefore, it was inferred that phytohormones regulated redox homeostasis to circumvent oxidative damage and mediate essential metabolic events in maize under stress. The purpose of this study was to identify the saponin and phenolic components in root extracts of Saponaria officinalis, a widespread species, found in Cyprus. A total of six major saponins, including gypsogenin and gypsogenic acid derivatives, as well as saponariosides C, D, and E, were identified using UHPLC/Q-TOF-MS analysis, with gypsogenin derivatives being the most common saponins detected through quantitative analysis. A total of six phenolic compounds were also identified, including rutin, quercetin galactoside, syringic acid, apigenin, protocatechuic, and vanillic acid. In addition to their saponin and phenolic contents, the root extracts were prepared through different extraction methods, and their biological activity was assessed. All samples demonstrated antioxidant capacity, as well as antibacterial activity, against four bacterial strains (Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus faecalis, and Salmonella enteritidis), with the acetone extract presenting higher susceptibility. The evaluation of anticancer activity in A375 (human malignant melanoma), HeLa (human cervical epithelioid carcinoma), and HaCaT (healthy human keratinocytes) cell lines revealed that the acetone extract of S. officinalis extract demonstrated a significant inhibitory effect on the proliferation of A375 cells in a concentration-dependent manner. None of the extracts demonstrated anti-neurotoxic potential against Aβ25–35 cytotoxic peptides. The results of this study support previous findings that reveal that the Saponaria species are an excellent natural source of biologically active compounds with antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anticancer properties. This study presents the phytochemical composition, antioxidant (hydrogen atom and single-atom transfer mechanisms), and digestive enzyme inhibitory (alpha-amylase, alpha-glucosidase, and pancreatic lipase) activities of ethanol-based extractions and traditional preparations (infusion) of the leaves of wild-edible Allium species (A. kharputense, A. affine, A. shirnakiense, and A. akaka) from the highlands of Eastern Anatolia. Among the eight extracts analyzed, ethanol extractions of the A. kharputense and A. akaka leaves exhibited better biotherapeutic activities and had the highest bioactive content. The dominant bioactive profile was composed of mainly allicin and phenolic compounds (chlorogenic acid, hesperidin, rutin, isoquercitrin, and quercetin) with small amounts of fatty acids. These data were similar to the biological activities and chemical composition of common Allium species and suggest the utilization of the extracts of wild-edible Allium species in the development of Allium-based biotherapeutics or nutraceuticals.
