One-atmosphere heating experiments were carried out for the 2 cm sized cubic samples of the phenocryst-rich basaltic lava (Suijin lava from Fuji volcano, Japan) to examine how the rheological behavior of the phenocryst-rich lava depends on temperature and time. The fO2 condition was not controlled during the experiments, but oxidation was not significant except for only near the surface of the run sample. At 1150°C, the lava was not deformed by its weight at least within 90 min. At 1155°C, the lava partly deformed at 45 min. At 1160°C, the lava was not deformed at < 20 min, but the deformation onset at 25 ± 5 min and perfectly flowed at > 37 ± 7 min. The onset time of deformation decreased as temperature increased. The rheological behavior of the lava changes drastically from solid to liquid within narrow ranges of temperature and time. Textural analyses of the run samples heated at 1150°C, 1155°C and 1160°C for 45 min suggest that the phenocryst content was almost constant at ~37 vol% regardless of heating temperature. In contrast, crystal content in the groundmass decreases from ~9.5 vol% to ~2.5 vol% as the temperature increases from 1150°C to 1160°C. This behavior can be explained by a crystal content-dependent change of relative viscosity with Φm ~ 0.437‒0.476, where Φm is the critical crystal content at which rheological transition occurs. Present results suggest that in phenocryst-rich lava, a slight increase/decrease in groundmass crystals causes the total crystal content to exceed/fall below the critical crystal content at which the solid-liquid transition occurs. This study presents a comprehensive account of the petrogenetic and geodynamic evolution of the Bellara Trap volcanic rocks from the Ingaldhal Formation, Chitradurga Group, western Dharwar Craton (WDC). Geochemical attributes of these rocks are consistent with two groups with distinct evolutionary trends: one comprising tholeiitic, MORB (mid-ocean ridge basalt) type basalts (BTB) and the other corresponding to calc-alkaline andesites (BTA). Basalts are essentially composed of clinopyroxene and plagioclase whereas the andesites are porphyritic with phenocrysts of plagioclase, clinopyroxene and polycrystalline quartz embedded in a groundmass of K-feldspar, quartz and opaques. Primary igneous mineralogy is overprinted by greenschist facies metamorphism resulting in chlorite-actinolite-plagioclase assemblage. The BTB samples reflect nearly flat REE patterns with weak LREE enrichment in contrast to pronounced LREE enhancement over HREE discernible for BTA. Tectonically, the BTB samples correspond to an active mid-oceanic ridge-rift setting with a MORB composition, whereas a back-arc basin (BAB) regime is corroborated for the BTA samples fractionating from back-arc basin basalts. Geochemical imprints of subduction input are more pronounced in BTA compared to BTB as mirrored by their elevated abundances of incompatible fluid mobile elements like Ba, Th, U and LREE. The BTB is endowed with an N- to E-MORB signature attributable to minor contributions from subduction-related components at the inception of a back-arc basin in the vicinity of an active subduction system. The BTA derived through differentiation of a basaltic magma with BABB (back-arc basin basalt) affinity compositionally akin to a heterogeneous source mantle carrying depleted MORB-type and enriched arc-type components inducted with progressive subduction. The BABB-type andesites and MORB-type basalts from Bellara Traps record a compositional heterogeneity of mantle in an intraoceanic arc-back arc system. Mantle processes invoke a BABB-MORB spectrum with a MORB-like endmember and an arc-like endmember associated with a juvenile back-arc basin. This study infers a Neoarchean analogue of Mariana-type back-arc rift setting proximal to the arc with a gradual transition from anhydrous to hydrous melting processes synchronized with MORB-mantle and arc-mantle interaction during initiation of a nascent back arc adjacent to the arc. The MORB-BABB compositional spectrum for the Bellara Traps conforms to a Neoarchean back-arc basin that evolved under an extensional tectonic regime associated with incipient stages of back-arc rifting and incorporation of subduction-derived components in the mantle output. This study complies with Neoarchean intraoceanic accretionary cycle plate tectonics in WDC.

Mantle degassing transect across different tectonic units within a plate convergent setting has been well documented for oceanic convergent margins by systematic changes in geochemistry (e.g., 3He/4He, δ13C, and CO2/3He) of hydrothermal gases. However, little is known about spatial variations in volatile geochemistry across a continental convergent margin. In this study, we identify a mantle degassing transect in the southeastern Tibetan Plateau using He-CO2 systematics of hydrothermal gases, which extends from India-Asia continental convergent margin to intra-continent extensional region. δ13C-CO2 (−11.8‰ to −3.1‰) and CO2/3He (1.7 × 108 to 7.1 × 1011) values of hydrothermal gases show large variations that are consistent with modification by secondary physico-chemical processes, such as multi-component mixing, hydrothermal degassing, and calcite precipitation. Three levels of He degassing can be recognized based on 3He/4He dataset (0.01–5.87 RA) of the hydrothermal gas samples and their distances to volcanic centers. A magmatic level He degassing (35–74% mantle He) is found near active and/or Quaternary volcanoes fed by mantle-derived magmas. With increasing distance to volcanic centers, the outgassed magmatic volatiles are gradually diluted by crustal components (e.g., radiogenic 4He), defining a transitional level He degassing (13–33% mantle He). The 3He/4He values (8.16–8.48 RA) of olivine phenocrysts indicate a MORB (mid-ocean ridge basalts)-type mantle source for the magmatic and transitional levels of He degassing that are localized in Quaternary volcanic fields. A detailed petrological study is presented to constrain the origin of a suite of alkali olivine basalt and hawaiite (>5 wt% MgO) lavas that were erupted in a rift zone within the western Mexican arc (Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt), adjacent to the Sangangüey andesitic stratovolcano, together with more evolved lavas (mugearites and benmoreites; 9 wt%) SB crystallized at higher temperatures and lower melt-water contents (0–1.3 wt%) compared to high-MgO arc basalts (≤5.7 wt% H2O) erupted in the west-central Mexican arc. The Sangangüey lavas with 5–8 wt% MgO display evidence of mixing between high-MgO alkali olivine basalts and low-MgO mugearites. It is proposed that the unique composition of the mugearites (i.e., low SiO2 contents and elevated FeO and TiO2 contents) is the result of partial melting of mafic lower crust driven by the influx of high-MgO intraplate basalts under relatively hot, dry, and reduced conditions. On the basis of crystal textures and compositional zoning patterns, it is shown that both phenocryst growth and magma mixing occurred rapidly, most likely during ascent along fractures, and not slowly during prolonged storage in a crustal magma chamber.

The Cretaceous Ngaou Boh anorogenic complex (NBAC) located in the far North Adamawa Plateau, the centre domain of the Cameroon Line constitutes a plutonic-volcanic ring association. The whole rock K-Ar datation yields a crystallization age of ca. 74 Ma. Plutonic rocks comprise abundant alkali feldspar granites, scarce clinopyroxene-amphibole gabbros and alkali feldspar syenites. Alkali feldspar granites are leucocratic, coarse to fine-grained; quartz and K-feldspars are the major rock-forming mineral, besides minor oligoclase, biotite and accessory phases as sphene, zircon and opaques. Alkali feldspar syenites are mesocratic coarse-grained, mainly composed of K-feldspars with small amounts of quartz and biotite. Volcanic rocks consist of a basanite-trachyte-rhyolite suite. Basanites contain olivine and diopside phenocrysts and a groundmass essentially composed of plagioclase and titanomagnetite. Biotite-clinopyroxene trachytes and clinopyroxene-amphibole rhyolites have an almost homogeneous modal composition, mainly made up of sanidine and anorthoclase microliths, scarce phenocrysts of quartz, and minor crystals of biotite, clinopyroxene (augite) amphibole (pargasite, sandagaite); Fe-Ti oxides (ilmenite, titanomagnetite) and fibreglass are often isolated in the groundmass. Plutonic rocks are alkaline, weakly metaluminous with some alkali feldspar granites displaying agpaitic or peralkaline feature. Incompatible Trace elements (HFSE and LILE) distribution and chondrite-normalized REE patterns evidence a significant petrogenetic link between clinopyroxene-amphibole gabbros, alkali feldspar syenites and alkali feldspar granites. All the analysed samples are enriched in incompatible elements, indicating melts from spinel and garnet-bearing mantle source close to OIB component. Indeed, the (Tb/Yb)N ratios of both basanites (2.3-2.5) and clinopyroxene-amphibole gabbros (1.4-1.9) suggest different parental magma sources. Alkali feldspar granites appear as residue of magma differentiation led by crystal fractionation of liquid derived from the partial melting of spinel peridotite mantle. Clinopyroxene-amphibole rhyolites and biotite-clinopyroxene trachytes (Mg#=0.0-15.4) derive through fractional crystallization from basanites (Mg#=64.3-60.1), the most primitive mafic parental melt. Both plutonic rocks and lavas trends evidence a bimodality highlighted by a pronounced “Daly gap”.

Structural hydroxyl content of volcanic quartz phenocrysts was investigated with unpolarized Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. The phenocrysts originated from five pyroclastic fallout deposits from the Bükk Foreland Volcanic Area (BFVA), Hungary, and two from the AD 1314 Kaharoa eruption (KH eruption), Okataina Volcanic Complex (Taupo Volcanic Zone), New Zealand. All investigated quartz populations contain structural hydroxyl content in a narrow range with an average of 9.3 (±1.7) wt ppm. The earlier correlated horizons in the BFVA had the same average structural hydroxyl content (within uncertainty). Thus, it can be concluded that the structural hydroxyl content does not depend on the geographical distance of outcrops of the same units or the temperature or type of the covering deposit. The rare outlier values and similar structural hydroxyl contents show that the fallout horizons cooled fast enough to retain their original structural hydroxyl content. The similarity of the structural hydroxyl contents may be the result of similar P, T, and x (most importantly H2O and the availability of other monovalent cations) conditions in the magmatic plumbing system just before eruption. Therefore, we envisage common physical–chemical conditions, which set the structural hydroxyl content in the quartz phenocrysts and, consequently, the water content of the host magma (∼ 5.5 wt %–7 wt % H2O) in a relatively narrow range close to water saturation.

The Cenozoic basalts exposed in Bo Phloi Gem Field, Kanchanaburi Province, western Thailand are a host to different gem materials (e.g., sapphire, black spinel, black pyroxene and zircon) as well as other xenocrysts and xenoliths from the deep-seated formations onto the earth surface. However, only felsic xenoliths have never been investigated and reported in detail though they are in fact significant evidence of ancient tectonic processes of this area. In this study, the felsic xenoliths were sampled and classified, on the basis of petrochemistry, into granite, syenogranite, and syenite. However, they contain similar mineral assemblages including essentials of quartz, K-feldspar, and plagioclase with different proportions and accessories of biotite, zircon, and opaque minerals. Moreover, large phenocrysts of K-feldspar and plagioclase commonly present as a primary texture which are frequently corroded and replaced by ‘sieved texture’ with secondary cumulative fringe of tiny feldspar and quartz. These secondary textures clearly indicate quenching after re-heating during transportation by basaltic magma. Geochemical analyses indicate that the alkaline and peraluminous magma show enrichment of Rb and depletion of Ba, Nb, Ta, Ti with steep slope of LREE/HREE enrichment patterns. These evidences suggest low-degree partial melting of crustal materials related to the collisional S-type granite magmatism. In addition, U-Pb dating of zircon from a felsic xenolith yields 211.6±1.3 Ma comparable to the Late Triassic magmatism of the central belt granite in this region which is resulted from the collision between Sibumasu and Indochina terranes.

The Huayra Huasi Volcanic Complex of Miocene age (11.88 ± 0.15 Ma U–Pb zircon) was emplaced in the Northern Puna plateau of Argentina, spatially associated with ignimbrites erupted from Altiplano–Puna Volcanic Complex calderas. The complex comprises biotite-bearing dacites and low-SiO2 rhyolites in the northern area and high-SiO2 rhyolites in the south, all with peraluminous compositions (A/CNK > 1.0–1.22). The units have broadly similar initial Sr and Nd isotopic ratios (87Sr/86Sr ∼ 0.71013–0.71225 and εNd ∼ −5.4 to −7.0) and are composed of plagioclase, quartz, sanidine and biotite as the main phenocryst phases. All units host macroscopic microgranular enclaves and xenoliths of sillimanite–biotite schists, sillimanite- and sillimanite–garnet gneisses, as well as fibrous alumina-rich microxenoliths, the latter being especially abundant in the southern rhyolites. Petrographic, mineral and whole-rock geochemistry, geothermometric and isotopic data indicate that all units of the complex originated by contamination of andesite magmas through assimilation of upper crustal lithologies in early stages of magma evolution. The fibrous alumina-rich microxenoliths are composed almost entirely of refractory minerals (sill + Kfsp ± Pl ± Bt) and interpreted as peritectic or restitic products of partial melting of assimilated metasedimentary rocks similar to the unmodified metamorphic xenoliths in the complex. Geochemical modeling indicates that, after early-stage contamination, each magmatic unit evolved separately. Whereas the northern dacites and low-SiO2 rhyolites underwent assimilation and fractional crystallization throughout their history, the southern rhyolites mainly evolved via fractional crystallization of felsic phases alone. This study shows that the peraluminous nature of felsic magmas do not necessarily originate by partial melting of crustal material but can be acquired by metaluminous magmas during later evolution. The processes shown here of assimilation and fractional crystallization and pure fractional crystallization has relevance for other igneous bodies of similar compositions in the Puna backarc and worldwide.

First data on oxygen isotopic composition in phenocrysts in volcanic rocks from Okhotsk–Chukotka volcanic belt (106–78 Ma, North-Eastern Russia) together with Sr and Nd isotopic data gives additional geochemical evidence on belt segmentation. Calculated δ18Omelt in calc-alkaline magmas of belt vary from normal-δ18O (from +5.2 to +6.9‰) consistent with mantle-like signatures of radiogenic isotopes. Low-δ18O (from +4.7 to +4.8‰) silicic magmas were found in Western–Okhotsk segment of the belt interpreted as assimilation of hydrothermally altered rocks from pre-caldera rifted basement. The highest δ18O values were obtained for Chukotka segment of the belt reaching +10.8‰ and these are correlated with elevated 87Sr/86Sr due to assimilation of relatively mature high-δ18O continental crust. Comparison with Kamchatka volcanic belt is performed.

Inclusions of basaltic melt trapped inside of olivine phenocrysts during igneous crystallization provide a rich, crystal-scale record of magmatic processes ranging from mantle melting to ascent, eruption, and quenching of magma during volcanic eruptions. Melt inclusions are particularly valuable for retaining information on volatiles such as H2O and CO2 that are normally lost by vesiculation and degassing as magma ascends and erupts. However, the record preserved in melt inclusions can be variably obscured by postentrapment processes, and thus melt inclusion research requires careful evaluation of the effects of such processes. Here we review processes by which melt inclusions are trapped and modified after trapping, describe new opportunities for studying the rates of magmatic and volcanic processes over a range of timescales using the kinetics of post-trapping processes, and describe recent developments in the use of volatile contents of melt inclusions to improve our understanding of how volcanoes work. ▪ Inclusions of silicate melt (magma) trapped inside of crystals formed by magma crystallization provide a rich, detailed record of what happens beneath volcanoes. ▪ These inclusions record information ranging from how magma forms deep inside Earth to its final hours as it ascends to the surface and erupts. ▪ The melt inclusion record, however, is complex and hazy because of many processes that modify the inclusions after they become trapped in crystals. ▪ Melt inclusions provide a primary archive of dissolved gases in magma, which are the key ingredients that make volcanoes erupt explosively.

The Demeni-Mocidade domain (DMD) comprises a large area of granitoid rocks, located on the border between the states of Roraima and Amazonas, Brazil, within the inner part of the Ventuari-Tapajos Province of the Amazonian Craton, where large amounts of granitoid rocks, formed between 2.0-1.8 Ga, are predominant. This study examines six granite samples collected from the Mocidade and Demeni mountains, which are related in time to the Uatuma Silicic Large Igneous Province (SLIP), which, in turn, covers several tectonostratigraphic domains whose evolution is associated with an intercontinental setting, allowing a common association with I- and A-type granitoid rocks formed within the same 1.88 to 1.87 Ga time interval. These rocks are monzogranites and correspond petrographically to holocrystalline anisotropic lithotypes with fine to medium grain sizes. Their textural relationships, including some lithotypes containing phenocrysts with oscillatory zoning and resorbed rims, indicatethat crystallization occurred at subvolcanic or hypabyssal depths. Moreover, the association between plutonic and subvolcanic rocks in the same suite shows variations in the crustal development of the magmatic chambers. The granitoids of the DMD share a common geochemical signature with those of the Agua Branca Suite, which occurs within the Uatuma and Trombetas-Erepecuru domains of the Guiana Shield, suggesting that their crystallization occurred in similar magmatic chambers. Six U-Pb zircon ages show that most zircon crystals are concordant and the few ones which are discordant are well aligned along Discordia straight lines descending to zero. The calculated Concordia ages, covering the 1884 to 1877 Ma interval, agree within experimental error, indicating a probably similar crystallizationage. Such apparent age values, close to 1900 Ma for the DMD, made it possible for the domain of the Uatuma SLIP to spread to the West, and the area of the Ventuari-Tapajos Province could extend towards the Amazonas State of Venezuela. Finally, the coexistence between I- and A-type granitoids in the DMD, with ages within the range 1.88-1.87 Ga, stimulates a discussion, and there are three possibilities: (1) The calc-alkaline magmatism can be associated with late (post-collisional) processes related to subduction. (2) The granitoid rocks are formed in an intracontinental setting under more stable (post-orogenic) tectonic conditions. (3) The granitoid rocks are predominantly formed by A-type and alkaline magmatism in intraplate settings.

The Emeishan large igneous province (LIP) consists of Permian flood basalts and coeval intrusive rocks with compositions varying from mafic-ultramafic rocks to syenites and granites. The volatiles in the Emeishan LIP are dominated by H2O with high H-2, indicating that the plume-derived magma was generated under a reduced condition. Picrite has minor contents of H2S without detectable SO2, and the basalt samples show no detectable H2S and SO2, indicating that the basaltic magma may have undergone sulphur-saturation during magma evolution. The delta C-13 values of CO2 and CH4 in picrites and basalts are between the values of mantle and crustal organic carbon. This, together with the distribution patterns among CH4 homologue, indicates contribution of recycled sediments to the Emeishan mantle-derived magma. The He-3/He-4 ratios of volatiles extracted from olivine and pyroxene phenocrysts of picrites vary from 01 to 0.66 Ra, and those from pyroxene separates of olivine websterite samples in the Zhubu intrusion vary from 0.92 to 15 Ra. The low He-3/He-4 ratios of the picrites from Emeishan LIP are lower than those from the Siberian LIP, but within the values of continental crust and oceanic crust. The positive correlation between He-4/(40)Arc and He-4 contents in Emeishan picrite suggests that the isotopic ratios were dramatically affected by crustal contamination rather than degassing. The He and Ar isotopes indicate that Emeishan picrite experienced addition of subducted oceanic crustal materials, and the Zhubu magma was contaminated by continental crustal materials.

Oxygen isotopes are used to examine the well-documented magmatic evolution of alkaline volcanic rocks at The Pleiades in northern Victoria Land (NVL), Antarctica. Oxygen isotopes were measured in olivine, clinopyroxene, and plagioclase phenocrysts to better understand the origin and evolution of the sodic and potassic differentiation lineages. The volcanic rocks at The Pleiades evolved from a parental basanite by fractional crystallization in crustal magma chambers. Olivine which crystallizes first in the mafic magmas provides the initial oxygen isotope composition of the magmatic lineages. The δ18OOL values for the mafic lavas in the sodic lineage are lower than the potassic lineage. The primary melt derived from the metasomatized lithospheric mantle may have consumed a low-δ18O amphibole metasome. Subsequently, the melt would have evolved to the normal-δ18O potassic lineage magma by a large contribution from surrounding peridotite. In contrast, the sodic lineage magma might preserve low-δ18O characteristics because of insufficient reaction with the surrounding mantle peridotite. Intermediate rocks of the potassic lineage exhibit a wide variation in their oxygen isotope compositions and it deviates from the theoretical normal-δ18O trend. Hence, variable δ18OOL values of the intermediate rocks suggest that high-δ18O recorded in olivine could be reconciled with an assimilation of crustal rocks in NVL, and hydrothermally altered material may have contributed to low-δ18O signature of the olivines.

Melt inclusions were investigated in the minerals of dacite tephra of the largest Holocene eruption (7900 years) of Khangar volcano, Sredinny Range of Kamchatka. Melt compositions correspond to rhyolite (SiO2 = 70–77 wt %, Na2O+K2O = 6–7 wt %) with ~5 wt % H2O. The melts show a minor negative Nb anomaly and lesser HREE depletion (La/Yb is ~7.1) compared to those of Ichinsky Volcano, another active volcano of the Sredinny Range of Kamchatka. It was determined that different phenocryst assemblages were formed within temperature ranges of 750–785 and 830–870°C. Evidence for the assimilation of granite-gneiss basement by magmas of Khangar volcano are discussed.

Evaluation of the petrogenetic history of continental flood basalt using mineral–chemical data has been sparingly used for several flood basalt provinces of the world. For the Deccan flood basalts, such attempts are still rudimentary. The present contribution highlights several facets of petrogenesis of the Eastern Deccan Volcanic Province using details of constituent phases including glass. The present-study area around Khandwa (21°49′N, 76°21′E) indicates the presence of three distinct lava flows, which were identified on the basis of physical volcanological features based on a three-tier classification. Moreover, the occasional presence of chilled dykes and feeder dykes has been documented. The lava succession rests above (apparent) cumulate gabbro basement. The lava flows, in general, are characterized by dominant pyroxene (mostly augite, locally pigeonite) and plagioclase, opaque (magnetite and ilmenite) and glass, whereas olivine is rare. Both of these principal mineral phases (namely, plagioclase and pyroxene) occur both as phenocrysts and groundmass, while opaque phases occur only as groundmass. Pyroxene and plagioclase are generally zoned due to the changing milieu of crystallization conditions. Pyroxene thermometry data show the equilibration temperature range of 1050–1300 °C. Except for two samples of Flow II and one sample of chilled zone, the pyroxene thermometry data are broadly similar to that obtained from magnetite–ilmenite thermometry. As expected, deduced glass thermometric data reveal a relatively higher temperature. Crystallization history of parental magma was quantitatively modeled using Petrolog 3 software. The results indicate that the parental magma underwent both equilibrium and fractional crystallization (for example initially crystallized olivine reacted with ambient liquid to give rise to pyroxene). Phenocrystal and groundmass plagioclase and pyroxene show distinct patterns of compositional zoning corresponding to fluctuating physical parameters within the magma. Some of the glass [especially from the chilled dyke, feeder dyke, and Upper Colonnade Zone (UCZ) of flow II and flow III] represents ‘higher magnitude pressure ambience’ (fossilized glass) which is distinct from ‘surficial glass’ caused by equilibrium quenching. The glass and pyroxene compositions (using tectonic discrimination diagrams) suggest a non-orogenic continental setting of the parent magma. It is concluded that the studied Deccan volcanism shows a complex interplay of repeated pulses of magma ascent, fluctuation of crystallization condition, effervescence, and local magma mixing.

Harvesting quantitative fO2 information from synchrotron μ-XANES measurements of Cr2+/ΣCr in olivine phenocrysts requires robust thermodynamic or empirical models that can accurately predict Cr2+/ΣCr in basaltic liquids as a function of fO2, temperature, and liquid chemistry. We present the results from a combined experimental-XANES study designed to illuminate how evolving liquid chemistry and decreasing temperature influence the equilibrium Cr2+/ΣCr ratios in crystallizing basaltic liquids. The Cr valence dataset produced from these experiments was fit with a symmetric regular solution model; this fitting generated a model equation that predicts the Cr2+/ΣCr in basaltic magmas. Using MELTS in conjunction with the newly calibrated Cr valence model, we calculated the Cr2+/ΣCr of a tholeiitic liquid undergoing isobaric equilibrium crystallization at 2.5 °C intervals. The modeling results indicate that Cr2+/ΣCr evolves dynamically in crystallizing liquids composition and may be partially decoupled from bona fide changes in magmatic fO2. These calculations suggest that the increasing iron content of the residual liquid is the most influential factor influencing the Cr2+/ΣCr of the residual liquid. Olivine normative tholeiitic liquids following a liquid line of descent parallel to an oxygen fugacity buffer curve experience significant decreases in the equilibrium Cr2+/ΣCr of their residual liquids. Our modeling also demonstrates that Cr2+/ΣCr values preserved in early olivine phenocrysts indeed reflect the magmatic fO2 conditions under which they grew; however, the effects of magmatic fO2 are also superimposed on the underlying influences of temperature and melt chemistry.

Aggregates of corundum crystals with skeletal to hopper morphology occur in pyroclastic rocks erupted from Cretaceous basaltic volcanoes on Mt Carmel, N. Israel. The rapid growth of the crystals trapped volumes of the parental Al2O3-supersaturated melt; phenocrysts of tistarite (Ti2O3) in the trapped melts indicate crystallization at oxygen fugacities 6–7 log units below the Iron-Wüstite buffer (fO2 = ΔIW − 6 to − 7), induced by fluxes of mantle-derived CH4-H2 fluids. Cathodoluminescence images reveal growth zoning within the individual crystals of the aggregates, related to the substitution of Ti3+ in the corundum structure. Ti contents are 2 wt%. Numerical modelling indicates that the first skeletal crystals grew in an open system, from a moving magma. The subsequent linear increase in Ti reflects growth in a partially closed system, with decreasing porosity; the exponential increase in Ti close to melt pockets reflects closed-system growth, leading to dramatic increases in incompatible-element concentrations in the residual melts. We suggest that the corundum aggregates grew in melt/fluid conduits; diffusion modelling implies timescales of days to years before crystallization was terminated by explosive eruption. These processes probably operate in explosive volcanic systems in several tectonic settings.

We present a detailed review of the petrological and geochemical aspects of rhyolite and associated silicic volcanic rocks (up to 20 ​vol% of all rocks) reported to date from twelve well known Phanerozoic continental mafic Large Igneous Provinces (LIPs). These typically spread over ≤104 ​km2 (rarely 105 ​km2 for Paraná-Etendeka) area and comprise ≤104 ​km3 of extrusive silicic rocks, erupted either during or after the main basaltic eruption within 900 ​°C. Rhyolites formed by significant crustal contribution are characterized by strong negative Nb-Ta anomalies, absence of clinopyroxene phenocrysts, and are likely to have a magma temperature

Alkaline basalts of Bafang and its environs are consisted of feldspars, olivines, pyroxenes and oxides which appear as phenocrysts, microphenocrysts and microcrysts. Feldspars are plagioclases (An67.97-15.84Ab69.19-30.43Or20.59-1.51) and anorthoclases (Ab68.11-61.20Or33.87-20.91An10.98-4.93). Plagioclases are the most abundant amount these feldspars. Anorthoclases appear only in mugearite (BAF 3 and BAF 37) the most differentiated of the studied alkaline-basalts. In High Magnesian basalt, (HMg-B) plagioclases are labradorites (An67.97-59.30Ab38.74-30.43Or2.75-1.60) and sanidine (An45.44-31.82Ab62.66-51.79Or5.52-2.77), whereas in Low Magnesian basalt (LMg-B) there are labrador (An67.4.75-51.96Ab44.98-33.72Or3.06-1.51), andesine (An45.44-31.82Ab62.66-51.79Or5.52-2.77), oligoclase (An26.65-15.84Ab69.19-63.57Or20.59-8.55) and anarthoclase (Ab68.11-61.20Or33.87-20.91An10.98-4.93). Olivines are magnesian (Fo86.7-50.1) and ferriferous (Fo48.8-37.8). In HMg-B, olivine are only magnesian. These olivines are chrysolites and hyalositerite. In LMg-B, olivines are magnesian and ferriferous with the predominance of ferriferous. They are chrysolites, hyalositerite and hortonolite. Pyroxenes are Ca, Mg and Fe clinopyroxenes. There are diopsides (Wo51.94-45.02En44.41-33.16Fs16.42-10.70) and augites (Wo44.88-43.64En41.03-37.04Fs18.25-14.43). Oxides are magnetites represented by ulvospinel (Usp90-75Sp2-7Mt5-23). Fractionation of ferromagnesian minerals (opaque oxide, olivine and pyroxene) is the main differentiation process. Two stages of fractional crystallization can be distinguished: the first stage comes with basanites and the second with hawaiites to mugearites. Chemical compositions of phenocrystals in studied basaltics lavas record signatures of magma recharge by pulsatory intrusions of new magma into the existing magma reservoir before the eruptions.

Lamprophyre dykes that crosscut different types of ultrahigh pressure (UHP) metamorphic rocks are widely distributed in the Triassic Sulu UHP orogenic belt. Although abundant studies have been performed on these dykes, their origin and petrogenesis remain topics of controversy. This study presents the results of a detailed field-based study of petrology, whole-rock geochemistry and zircon U-Pb and Lu-Hf isotopes on lamprophyre dykes exposed in the central Sulu UHP zone, aiming at shedding lights on their petrogenesis and providing clues on the geological evolution of eastern continental China during the Cretaceous. The lamprophyres are typically porphyritic, with phenocrysts dominantly composed of amphibole and clinopyroxene set in a lamprophyric matrix. The dykes have moderate SiO2 (47.70 wt.%–60.44 wt.%), variably high MgO (2.58 wt.%–8.28 wt.%) and Fe2O3T (4.88 wt.%–9.26 wt.%) contents with high Mg# of 49–66. Geochemically, they have enriched light rare earth element (REE) and flat heavy REE patterns ((La/Gd)N=5.14–10.56; (Dy/Yb)N=1.43–1.54) with negligible Eu anomalies (Eu/Eu*=0.83–1.10), and they show enrichment in large ion lithophile elements (e.g., Ba and K) but depletion in high-field strength elements (e.g., Nb, Ti and P). In-situ zircon U-Pb geochronology reveals that the lamprophyres have concordant ages of 120–115 Ma, demonstrating that the dykes emplaced in the Early Cretaceous. These zircons have eHf(t) values ranging from −26.0 to −11.0. Inherited zircons that occur in the dykes are dated to be Neoproterozoic, in line with the protolith ages of their host (i.e., the UHP rocks). An integration of these data allows us to propose that the lamprophyres were generated during the Cretaceous, by melting of subcontinental lithospheric mantle-derived metasomatite with enriched chemical compositions underneath the North China Craton. The metasomatite was formed mainly by peridotite-fluid/melt reactions, with the fluids/melts mainly liberated from subducted Yangtze continental crust during the Triassic. Regional extension, lithospheric thinning and mantle upwelling caused by rollback of the subducted paleo-Pacific plate is considered to account for the generation of the lamprophyres as well as the extensive arc-like magmatic rocks in eastern continental China during the Early Cretaceous.

Intracrystalline distortions (like undulose extinction, dislocations, and subgrain boundaries) in olivine from naturally-deformed peridotites are generally taken as signs of dislocation creep. However, similar features in olivine phenocrysts that have been found in basaltic magmas are still not well understood. In particular, whether subgrain boundaries in olivine phenocrysts arise from plastic deformation or grain growth is still debated (in the latter case, they are essentially grain boundaries but not subgrain boundaries. Therefore, we used hereinafter subgrain-boundary-like structures instead of subgrain boundaries to name this kind of intracrystalline distortion). Here we carried out a detailed study on dislocations and subgrain-boundary-like (SG-like) structures in olivine phenocrysts from two Hawaiian basaltic lavas by means of petrographic microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Abundant and complex dislocation substructures (free dislocations, dislocation walls, and dislocation tangles) were observed in the decorated olivine grains, similar to those in olivine from peridotite xenoliths entrained by the Hawaiian basalts. The measured average dislocation density is (2.9±1.3)×1011 m−2, and is three to five orders of magnitude higher than that in laboratory-synthesized, undeformed olivine. TEM observations on samples cut across the SG-like structures by FIB (focused ion beam) demonstrated that this kind of structures is made of an array of dislocations. These observations clearly indicate that these structures are real subgrain boundaries rather than grain boundaries. These facts suggest that the observed high dislocation densities and subgrain boundaries cannot result from crystal crystallization/growth, but can be formed by plastic deformation. These deformation features do not prove that the olivine phenocrysts (and implicitly mantle xenoliths) were deformed after their capture by the basaltic magmas, but can be ascribed to a former deformation event in a dunitic cumulate, which was formed by magmatic fractionation, then plastically deformed, and finally disaggregated and captured by the basaltic magma that brought them to the surface.

he paper discusses the physico-chemical formation conditions of minerals-pheno-crysts in basaltic complexes, which host massive sulfde deposits of the Urals and Siberia. It is found as a result of study of melt inclusions that clinopyroxene from basalts of the Valentorka (North Urals) and Kyzyl-Tashtyg (South Siberia) deposits crystallized from melts with similar temperature (1165–1130 and 1210–1085 °С, respectively) and chemical parameters. In both cases, the composi¬tions of basalt-andesite magmas (with features of igneous island arc and back-arc basin systems) evolved with a decrease in FeO, MgO, and CaO contents and increase in K2O and SiO2 contents. Modeling, which is based on the compositions of inclusions and clinopyroxene, showed that miner-als-phenocrysts crystallized from intermediate magma chambers of diferent depth, the parameters of which are consistent with each other and with data on present-day suprasubduction magmatism: Valentorka deposit – 33–27, 23–13, and 10–3 km, 1185–1090 °C; Kyzyl-Tashtyg deposit – 27–20, 15.0–6.7, and 5.0–1.7 km, 1215–1105 °С. Calculations using compositions of melt inclusions show a consistent change of melts from basalts to rhyolites, indicating that the combination of contrasting volcanic complexes of the deposits studied are a result of the evolution of initial basaltic magmas during their uplift to the upper crustal horizons. Our studies of rocks, clinopyroxene and melt inclu¬sions indicate that the basaltic complexes of the Valentorka and Kyzyl-Tashtyg deposits formed in an ancient suprasubduction island arc – back-arc basin system.

Diffusion timescale estimated from a chemical zoning profile in a phenocryst mineral indicates the time between formation of chemical heterogeneity in the crystal and eruption. Therefore, diffusion timescales offer important constraints for understanding pre-eruptive magmatic processes. In the last two decades, many studies have reported data of diffusion timescales estimated for phenocrysts of various mineral species in both pyroclasts and lavas from worldwide. In this study, we compiled published data of diffusion timescales with information of eruption characteristics such as eruption style, eruptive volume, and chemical composition of magma, and examine relationship between diffusion timescales and eruption characteristics. Our results suggest that ⑴ the estimated maximum and minimum diffusion timescales depend on species of mineral and element used for diffusion modeling, ⑵ estimation error of diffusion time is at least larger than ~±0.4 log unit, which should be considered into account when diffusion time is compared with geophysical observations, ⑶ each phenocryst records information about its own growth history, not a history of whole magma chamber, as chemical zoning, ⑷ diffusion timescales estimated for phenocrysts in pyroclasts of caldera-forming eruptions are systematically longer than those of non-caldera-forming eruptions, although number of data is small for non-caldera-forming rhyolitic eruption; this discrepancy may be attributed to differences of magma chamber volumes and/or mechanism of eruption triggering between caldera-forming and non-caldera-forming eruptions. The eastern Junggar Basin, controlled by continental extension (rift), was deposited by lacustrine dominated sediments during middle Permian Lucaogou period. An unusual porphyritic-like texture was observed in Lucaogou/Pingdiquan dark fine-grained organic-rich sediments in two sub-tectonic units in the basin. The “phenocrysts” are composed of two types of mineral assemblages. The first is a coarse euhedral calcite assemblage in the Jimusar Sag, and the second consists of dolomite, analcime, and pyrite in the Shishugou Sag. The lithological and mineralogical features indicate a hydrothermal origin for these phenocryst-like minerals. The chondrite-normalized rare earth element patterns show flat or positive Ce anomalies and negative Eu anomalies, which reflect a suboxic to anoxic, off-axis site from the center of the fault system, where the temperature of the hydrothermal fluid might be less than 250 °C. The high ratios of BaN/LaNat 1.6–65.5, strongly positive Sr anomalies at Sr/Sr* = 5.54–39.9, and relatively low87Sr/86Sr isotopes at 0.705002–0.705776 in the coarse calcite suggest an origin of mixed sources of lake water, underlying biogenetic sediments, and deep magmatic water. However, the low87Sr/86Sr ratios of 0.705321–0.705968 in the dolomite and δ34SV-CDTof 10.8‰–12.3‰ in the pyrite indicate that water–underlying-rock interaction and the abiotic thermochemical sulfate reduction of lake water or organic matter might have participated together resulting in the precipitation of the dolomite–analcime–pyrite assemblages in the Shishugou Sag.

Molecular formulae used to recalculate nepheline analyses generally have different numbers of oxygens (e.g. NaAlSiO4(Ne), KAlSiO4,(Ks), CaAl2Si2O8(An) and SiO2(Q)). A 32 oxygen cell has 16 T cations and 8 cavity sites, but ideal nepheline stoichiometry is not necessarily followed. Ca end-member □CaCaAl2Si2O4(CaNe) and excess silica end-member □SiSi2O4(Q’) calculation requires inclusion of both vacancy species as cavity cation values. Q’ parameter calculations can involve different assumptions and four parameters are described: Qxs; QSi; Q(Si–Al); and Qcavity; these should have closely similar values for high-quality, stoichiometric analyses.Representative published compositions are recalculated to assess whether authors followed ideal nepheline stoichiometry. Phenocrysts from peralkaline rocks and nephelinites typically exhibit Al deficiencies reflected in negative Δ(Al – cavity cation) parameters (ΔAlcc), negative ‘normative’ corundum (Al2O3,Cn), and anomalously low or negative Qxsparameters; for such rock types Q(Si–Al)provides a better estimate of excess silica contents. A ΔT-site (cation charge) parameter (ΔTcharge), is closely coupled to ΔAlccand end-member NaAlSiO4has a ΔAlcc/ΔTchargeratio of 1.4296; the derivation of this value is controlled by strict stuffed-tridymite, unit-cell constraints. Natural nephelines all contain excess silica with a mean ΔAlcc/ΔTchargeof ~1.134 reflecting their Si/Al ratio being > 1.Nepheline analyses with relatively low Al and Si and high Na (also Ca) contents are common; this might reflect the presence of small amounts (up to ~5%) of cancrinite as an alteration phase or perhaps even in solid solution. The compositions of alteration lamellae of Ca-rich cancrinite in altered nepheline phenocrysts in phonolites from the Marangudzi alkaline complex, Zimbabwe, are used to define diagnostic parameters for recognising such non-stoichiometry. These alteration lamellae formed hydrothermally from Ca-rich and K-poor fluids.An EXCEL file is provided to help researchers to standardise calculation of nepheline end-member molecular proportions.

The Emeishan large igneous province (ELIP) in SW China is considered to be a typical mantle-plume-derived LIP. The picrites formed at relatively high temperatures in the ELIP, providing one of the important lines of argument for the role of mantle plume. Here we report trace-element data on olivine phenocrysts in the Dali picrites from the ELIP. The olivines are Ni-rich, and characterized by high (>1.4) 100×Mn/Fe value and low (DNiol/melt) will decrease at high temperatures and pressures, the picrites derived from peridotite melting at high pressure, and that crystallized olivines at lower pressure, can generate high concentrations of Ni in olivine phenocrysts, excluding the necessity of a metasomatic pyroxenite contribution. Based on the Al-in-olivine thermometer, olivine crystallization temperature and mantle potential temperature (TP) were calculated atc. 1491°C andc. 1559°C, respectively. Our results arec. 200°C higher than that of the normal asthenospheric mantle, and are consistent with the role of a mantle thermal plume for the ELIP.

A Serra da Capoeira Grande e o Morro do Silvério, em Pedra de Guaratiba, constituem o prolongamento sudoeste do Maciço da Pedra Branca. A rocha dominante na região é um granito rosa com cristais de microclina tabular orientados na direção NE-SW. Variações faciológicas resultantes da irregularidade no tamanho de grãos, da razão fenocristais/matriz e da intensidade da lineação ocorrem em escala métrica a centimétrica e com contatos transicionais entre si. Enclaves de metassedimentos e de rochas ortoderivadas, com diferentes graus de assimilação, ocorrem ao longo de uma faixa linear NE-SW. Esses apresentam contornos lenticulares e orientação preferencial concordante com a direção dos megacristais de microclina e do bandamento ígneo. Dados de campo apontam para processos de segregação mecânica na formação dos subtipos, com granito equigranular, de granulação fina, como produto de segregação entre fenocristais e material intersticial. O arranjo espacial entre enclaves, granito equigranular e aglomerados de feldspato indicam terem os enclaves atuado como filtros retentores de fenocristais durante fluxo magmático. Concentrados de allanita ocorrem ao longo da zona enriquecida em enclaves, sugerindo a formação desse mineral por fluidos tardios, com mobilização de elementos terras favorecida pela maior permeabilidade da faixa.

Publisher's version (útgefin grein), Oldoinyo Lengai, located in the Gregory Rift in Tanzania, is a world-famous volcano owing to its uniqueness in producing natrocarbonatite melts and because of its extremely high CO2 flux. The volcano is constructed of highly peralkaline [PI = molar (Na2O + K2O)/Al2O3 > 2–3] nephelinite and phonolites, both of which likely coexisted with carbonate melt and a CO2-rich fluid before eruption. Results of a detailed melt inclusion study of the Oldoinyo Lengai nephelinite provide insights into the important role of degassing of CO2-rich vapor in the formation of natrocarbonatite and highly peralkaline nephelinites. Nepheline phenocrysts trapped primary melt inclusions at 750–800 °C, representing an evolved state of the magmas beneath Oldoinyo Lengai. Raman spectroscopy, heating-quenching experiments, low current EDS and EPMA analyses of quenched melt inclusions suggest that at this temperature, a dominantly natritess-normative, F-rich (7–14 wt%) carbonate melt and an extremely peralkaline (PI = 3.2–7.9), iron-rich nephelinite melt coexisted following degassing of a CO2 + H2O-vapor. We furthermore hypothesize that the degassing led to re-equilibration between the melt and liquid phases that remained and involved 1/ mixing between the residual (after degassing) alkali carbonate liquid and an F-rich carbonate melt and 2/ enrichment of the coexisting nephelinite melt in alkalis. The world-class San Rafael tin (-copper) deposit (central Andean tin belt, southeast Peru) is an exceptionally large and rich (>1 million metric tons Sn; grades typically >2% Sn) cassiterite-bearing hydrothermal vein system hosted by a late Oligocene (ca. 24 Ma) peraluminous K-feldspar-megacrystic granitic complex and surrounding Ordovician shales affected by deformation and low-grade metamorphism. The mineralization consists of NW-trending, quartz-cassiterite-sulfide veins and fault-controlled breccia bodies (>1.4 km in vertical and horizontal extension). They show volumetrically important tourmaline alteration that principally formed prior to the main ore stage, similar to other granite-related Sn deposits worldwide. We present here a detailed textural and geochemical study of tourmaline, aiming to trace fluid evolution of the San Rafael magmatic-hydrothermal system that led to the deposition of tin mineralization. Based on previous works and new petrographic observations, three main generations of tourmaline of both magmatic and hydrothermal origin were distinguished and were analyzed in situ for their major, minor, and trace element composition by electron microprobe analyzer and laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry, as well as for their bulk Sr, Nd, and Pb isotope compositions by multicollector-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry. A first late-magmatic tourmaline generation (Tur 1) occurs in peraluminous granitic rocks as nodules and disseminations, which do not show evidence of alteration. This early Tur 1 is texturally and compositionally homogeneous; it has a dravitic composition, with Fe/(Fe + Mg) = 0.36 to 0.52, close to the schorl-dravite limit, and relatively high contents (10s to 100s ppm) of Li, K, Mn, light rare earth elements, and Zn. The second generation (Tur 2)—the most important volumetrically—is pre-ore, high-temperature (>500°C), hydrothermal tourmaline occurring as phenocryst replacement (Tur 2a) and open-space fillings in veins and breccias (Tur 2b) and microbreccias (Tur 2c) emplaced in the host granites and shales. Pre-ore Tur 2 typically shows oscillatory zoning, possibly reflecting rapid changes in the hydrothermal system, and has a large compositional range that spans the schorl to dravite fields, with Fe/(Fe + Mg) = 0.02 to 0.83. Trace element contents of Tur 2 are similar to those of Tur 1. Compositional variations within Tur 2 may be explained by the different degree of interaction of the magmatic-hydrothermal fluid with the host rocks (granites and shales), in part because of the effect of replacement versus open-space filling. The third generation is syn-ore hydrothermal tourmaline (Tur 3). It forms microscopic veinlets and overgrowths, partly cutting previous tourmaline generations, and is locally intergrown with cassiterite, chlorite, quartz, and minor pyrrhotite and arsenopyrite from the main ore assemblage. Syn-ore Tur 3 has schorl-foititic compositions, with Fe/(Fe + Mg) = 0.48 to 0.94, that partly differ from those of late-magmatic Tur 1 and pre-ore hydrothermal Tur 2. Relative to Tur 1 and Tur 2, syn-ore Tur 3 has higher contents of Sr and heavy rare earth elements (10s to 100s ppm) and unusually high contents of Sn (up to >1,000 ppm). Existence of these three main tourmaline generations, each having specific textural and compositional characteristics, reflects a boron-rich protracted magmatic-hydrothermal system with repeated episodes of hydrofracturing and fluid-assisted reopening, generating veins and breccias. Most trace elements in the San Rafael tourmaline do not correlate with Fe/(Fe + Mg) ratios, suggesting that their incorporation was likely controlled by the melt/fluid composition and local fluid-rock interactions. The initial radiogenic Sr and Nd isotope compositions of the three aforementioned tourmaline generations (0.7160–0.7276 for 87Sr/86Sr(i) and 0.5119–0.5124 for 143Nd/144Nd(i)) mostly overlap those of the San Rafael granites (87Sr/86Sr(i) = 0.7131–0.7202 and 143Nd/144Nd(i) = 0.5121–0.5122) and support a dominantly magmatic origin of the hydrothermal fluids. These compositions also overlap the initial Nd isotope values of Bolivian tin porphyries. The initial Pb isotope compositions of tourmaline show larger variations, with 206Pb/204Pb(i), 207Pb/204Pb(i), and 208Pb/204Pb(i) ratios mostly falling in the range of 18.6 to 19.3, 15.6 to 16.0, and 38.6 to 39.7, respectively. These compositions partly overlap the initial Pb isotope values of the San Rafael granites (206Pb/204Pb(i) = 18.6–18.8, 207Pb/204Pb(i) = 15.6–15.7, and 208Pb/204Pb(i) = 38.9–39.0) and are also similar to those of other Oligocene to Miocene Sn-W ± Cu-Zn-Pb-Ag deposits in southeast Peru. Rare earth element patterns of tourmaline are characterized, from Tur 1 to Tur 3, by decreasing (Eu/Eu*)N ratios (from 20 to 2) that correlate with increasing Sn contents (from 10s to >1,000 ppm). These variations are interpreted to reflect evolution of the hydrothermal system from reducing toward relatively more oxidizing conditions, still in a low-sulfidation environment, as indicated by the pyrrhotite-arsenopyrite assemblage. The changing textural and compositional features of Tur 1 to Tur 3 reflect the evolution of the San Rafael magmatic-hydrothermal system and support the model of fluid mixing between reduced, Sn-rich magmatic fluids and cooler, oxidizing meteoric waters as the main process that caused cassiterite precipitation.

Saindak is one of the typical porphyry Cu deposits (PCDs) in the Chagai magmatic arc in Pakistan. Ore-forming porphyries at Saindak PCD are mainly composed of tonalite. Here, we use geochemistry of apatite enclosed in plagioclase phenocrysts from the ore-forming tonalite to constrain the releasing and recharging processes of S and Cl in the underlying parental magma chamber during PCD mineralization. Although apatite inclusions have homogeneous intra-grain S and Cl compositions, there is significant inter-grain S and Cl variations in apatite inclusions located from core to rim in the hosting plagioclase. Such inter-grain S and Cl variation in apatites are coupled with the core-to-rim trends of An, FeO and Mg contents of the hosting plagioclase phenocryst. It indicates that the Saindak PCD likely formed by episodic injection of primitive magmas during the growth of an underlying magma chamber, rather than by one major injection or by addition of mafic melt derived from different source region. Each primitive melt injection introduced essential ore-forming materials such as S and Cl, which were rapidly and effectively released to the coexisting fluids, causing mineralization. Once primitive melt injection stops, signaling the end of growth of underlying magma chamber, mineralization will cease quickly although the hydrothermal system can still survive for a long time. However, the later released fluids are relatively depleted in ore-forming materials, and thus have lower capability to generate mineralization. Accordingly, predominant porphyry-type mineralizations occurred during the growth rather than waning stage of a magmatic system.

Late Triassic granitoids containing abundant mafic microgranular enclaves (MMEs) occur widely in the Eastern Kunlun Orogenic Belt (EKOB). In this work, we present mineral chemistry, zircon U-Pb ages and L-Hf isotopes, whole-rock chemistry and S-Nd isotope compositions of the MMEs and host granodiorite from the Huda pluton in the Elashan area within the easternmost domain of the EKOB. These rocks contain inherited (Meso- to Neoproterozoic) and xenocrystic (ca. 240 Ma) zircon grains that yield apparent older ages, whereas the magmatic zircons from MMEs and granodiorite yield similar weighted mean ages around 224 Ma, which are interpreted as their crystallization ages. The MMEs have low SiO2 but high TiO2, TFe2O3, CaO, MgO and MnO concentrations with relatively high Mg# values (48–54) and 100MnO/(MnO + MgO + TFe2O3) ratios (1.2–1.6). They display identical Sr-Nd-Hf isotope compositions to the host granite. Combined with petrological evidence, we suggest that the MMEs are cognate cumulates that formed by pressure quenching during the late stage of magma evolution from the same parental magma of the host granodiorite, rather than a magma mixing origin. The granodiorite is calc-alkaline to high-K calc-alkaline, metaluminous I-type granite. They show relatively low SiO2 and MnO, but high MgO, Al2O3, CaO and TFe2O3 contents with Mg# values of 45–50. They are enriched in light rare earth elements (LREEs) and large ion lithophile elements (LILEs), such as Rb, Th, K and Pb, and are depleted in P and high field strength elements (HFSE) including Nb, Ta and Ti. These rocks display slightly negative Eu anomalies and low Sr/Y and La/Yb ratios. Together with the rim-ward chemically evolved nature of some phenocrysts, the comparatively high initial Sr isotope (0.70888–0.70912), low whole-rock eNd(t) (−5.6 to −6.0) and zircon eHf(t) (−3.3 to −0.1) values, and low Nb/Th (0.11–0.26) and Ta/U (0.53–0.68) ratios, we suggest that the granodiorite magma was sourced from the lower crust. Considering their comparatively young two-stage Nd and Hf model ages (1.42–1.49 Ga and 1.13–1.42 Ga, respectively) and same trace element character with the juvenile crust beneath the EKOB, we interpret the juvenile lower crust as the dominant source rocks for the granodiorite. Based on our data and regional geological evidence, we suggest that the partial melting of juvenile crust resulted from delamination-related asthenosphere mantle upwelling. The latter process resulted in extensive melting of the lower crust, producing a major Late Triassic magmatic flare-up event in the EKOB.

To provide new insights into the origin and evolution of kimberlitic magmas with different diamond concentrations from the Arkhangelsk diamond province in north-western Russia, we examined the major- and trace-element compositions of ilmenite from diamondiferous kimberlite of the Grib pipe and diamond-barren kimberlites from the Kepino cluster (Stepnaya and TsNIGRI–Arkhangelskaya pipes). Ilmenite from diamond-barren kimberlites shows lower Mg, Ti, Cr, Ni and Cu concentrations with increase in both Fe3+ and Fe2+ and Nb, Ta, Zr, Hf, Zn and V concentrations. The main differences between kimberlites with different diamond contents are the Nb and Zr concentrations and their correlation patterns with Mg and Cr concentrations. Ilmenite from the Grib kimberlite has Zr concentrations 300 ppm. Ilmenite crystallisation within the Grib kimberlite occurred under increasing oxygen fugacity (fO2), which may reflect assimilation of mantle peridotite by the kimberlitic magmas. Ilmenite from the Kepino kimberlites suggests its crystallisation under constant fO2, with the ilmenite composition being controlled by processes of fractional crystallisation of megacrystic minerals. These assumptions were confirmed with assimilation–fractional crystallisation calculations. On the basis of obtained data, we developed a model for the evolution of the kimberlitic magmas for both diamondiferous and barren kimberlites. The diamond-bearing kimberlitic magmas were generated under intense interaction of kimberlitic magmas with the surrounding lithospheric mantle. It may be that during early modification of the lithospheric mantle by kimberlitic magmas as well as with kimberlitic magmas’ local stretching and swift ascent, the capture of the mantle xenoliths was favoured over the crystallisation of phenocrysts. The formation of barren kimberlitic magmas may have occurred when the lithospheric mantle in the vicinity of ascending magmas was already geochemically equilibrated with them. It also is possible that the magma’s ascent slowed under conditions of dominantly compressive stresses with crystallisation of olivine and other megacrystic phases.

Electron microprobe analysis was conducted on plagioclase from the plagioclase ultraphyric basalts (PUBs) erupted on the Southwest Indian Ridge (SWIR) (51°E) to investigate the geochemical changes in order to better understand the magmatic processes occurring under ultraslow spreading ridges and to provide insights into the thermal and dynamic regimes of the magmatic reservoirs and conduit systems. The phenocryst cores are generally calcic (An74–82) and are depleted in FeO and MgO. Whereas the phenocryst rims (An67–71) and the plagioclase in the groundmass (An58–63) are more sodic and have higher FeO and MgO contents than the phenocryst cores. The crystallization temperatures of the phenocryst cores and the calculation of the equilibrium between the phenocrysts and the matrix suggest that the plagioclase cores are unlikely to have crystallized from the host basaltic melt, but are likely to have crystallized from a more calcic melt. The enrichment in incompatible elements (FeO and MgO), as well as the higher FeO/MgO ratios of the outermost phenocryst rims and the groundmass, are the result of plagioclase-melt disequilibrium diffusion during the short residence time in which the plagioclase crystallized. Our results indicate that an evolved melt replenishing under the SWIR (51°E) drives the eruption over a short period of time.

Introduction: The Tashly-Tau massif is a small olivine-hornblende gabbro stock that represents the earliest manifestations of the products of differentiated magmatism in the Khudolaz complex. The complex has a complicated geological structure. Therefore, the detailed petrological and geochemical studies of individual massifs using numerical simulation of crystallisation parameters make it possible to determine the formation features of the Khudolaz complex as a whole. The aim of the study is to reconstruct the paleogenesis of the gabbroids of the Tashly-Tau massif, which is also important because of the massif’s sulphide Cu-Ni mineralisation. Methodology: Rock forming minerals of the gabbroids were studied using an optical microscope Axioskop 40 and a scanning electron microscope Tescan Mira 3. The chemical composition of the rocks was determined using the X-ray fluorescence analysis and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. The isotopic composition of Sr and Nd was studied using thermal ionisation spectrometry. To model the petrogenesis, numerical COMAGMAT modelling and the method of geochemical thermometry were used. Results and discussion: The petrological and geochemical study of the rocks in the Tashly-Tau massif was carried out. It showed an extensive presence of the hornblende, titanous magnesiohastingsite (~50 wt. %). The gabbroids are characterised by their relative enrichment in large-ion elements (Cs, Rb, Sr, Ba) and depletion in high field strength elements (Nb, Ta, Zr, Hf, REE). Based on the geochemical data, it was concluded that the magmatic melt was poorly differentiated. The numerical simulation showed that the rocks were formed from magma, consisting of ~20 wt. % olivine phenocrysts (Fo 76) and water-saturated basalt melt (~1.7 wt. % H2O). The melt is characterised by high alumina and iron content and moderate magnesium content. The Sr-Nd isotopic composition of the rocks refers to little crustal contamination of the primitive melt. They are characterised by high positive values of eNd(Т) (+5.2...+10.3) and a low content of radiogenic strontium. A mantle reservoir of the PREMA type could be a source of the parent melt. Conclusions: The obtained results are important for understanding the formation nature of the complicatedly differentiated Khudolaz complex, specialised in sulphide mineralisation. This complex is unique to the Urals. It was shown that the use of numerical simulation of water-saturated basalt systems can be quite effective until the crystallisation of hydroxyl-containing rock forming minerals (the hornblende).

Актуальность изучения современного вулканизма заключается в понимании сложных процессов дифференциации, ассимиляции и смешения магм, зафиксированных в минералого-петрогеохимических и текстурно-структурных особенностях строения современных вулканитов. С другой стороны, с базитовым вулканизмом повышенной щелочности современных островодужных систем зачастую связано экономически значимое оруденение цветных и благородных металлов. Целью настоящей работы является изучение и интерпретация минералогических и петрохимических особенностей лав действующего вулкана Батур (о. Бали, Индонезия). Объектами исследования являются вулканиты, отобранные из лавовых потоков 1964 г. извержения действующего вулкана Батур. Породы современного островодужного магматизма и встречающиеся в них минералы изучены методами оптической и электронной микроскопии с применение энергодисперсионной спектроскопии. Химический состав основных петрогенных компонентов получен с помощью силикатного анализа, микроэлементный состав - с помощью масс-спектрометрии с индуктивно-связанной плазмой. В результате проведенных исследований было установлено, что все образцы изученных вулканитов имеют порфировую структуру и содержат вкрапленники плагиоклаза (17…23 об. %), оливина (3 об. %) и пироксена (2 об. %), расположенных в мелкозернистой массе мезостазиса, содержащего плагиоклазы, титаномагнетит, пироксен и вулканическое стекло. Для порфировых вкрапленников плагиоклаза характерна «ячеистая» структура, которая проявлена в виде ориентированных расплавных включений (~0,05 мм), содержащих первичный силикатный и сульфидный расплавы. По петрохимическим показателям породы относятся к высокоглиноземистым базальтам (Al2O3≥18,0). Сложный характер зональности порфировых вкрапленников плагиоклазов согласуется с быстрым охлаждением исходных расплавов, когда выделяющийся плагиоклаз не может прийти в равновесие с оставшейся еще жидкой магмой, по средневзвешенному составу он относится к лабрадор-битовниту. Оливин сочетает несколько вариантов перераспределения железа в своем составе. Отмечается прямая зональность с накоплением железа в краевых частях зерен, специфичные «структуры распада» с фазой «окси-оливина» и однородные кристаллы оливина с магнезиальностью Mg#(Fo) [=Mg/(Fe2++Mg)*100 %] ~ 66. Повышенная железистость оливина и примесь в нем MnO служат свидетельством того, что изучаемые породы являются производными базальтовых растворов с щелочным уклоном. По представлению авторов механизм формирования изучаемой серии андезибазальтов имеет следующий сценарий формирования. В период интенсивного вулканизма 1964 г. извержения вулкана Батур магматическая камера периодически обогащалась высокомагнезиальным (оливиновым) базальтом через определенные промежутки времени. Далее этот расплав поднимался в верхнюю часть камеры с последующим фракционированием оливина и клинопироксена при кристаллизации плагиоклаза и накоплением его в верхней части магматической камеры. В период поступления новой порции родоначального расплава существующая смесь не успевала прийти в равновесие с поступившей порцией расплава, изливаясь на поверхность и формируя лавы высокоглиноземистого базальта. Включения глобулей ковеллина и халькопирита в расплавных включениях порфировых вкрапленников плагиоклаза свидетельствуют о существовании высокофракционированного сульфидного расплава на более глубинном уровне. The relevance of the modern volcanism study is to understand the complex processes of the magma differentiation, assimilation and mixing that recorded in the mineralogical, structural and petrochemical features of volcanic rock units. On the other hand, economically significant deposit of non-ferrous and noble metals is often associated with basic volcanism of increased alkalinity in modern island-arc systems. The main aim of this work is to study and interpret the mineralogical and petrochemical features of the lavas from the active Batur volcano (Bali Island, Indonesia). Objects: samples of lava from the 1964 Batur eruption. Methods. The rock units of modern island arc lavas and the minerals found in them have been studied by optical and electron microscopy using energy dispersive spectroscopy analysis. The major elements of the rock units were obtained using silicate analysis, while trace element composition - using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry analysis. As a result of the conducted studies it was found that all samples of the lavas from Batur volcano have porphyry structure and contain phenocrysts of plagioclase (17...23 vol. %), olivine (3 vol. %) and pyroxene (2 vol. %) located in the fine-grained ground mass containing plagioclase, titanomagnetite, pyroxene and volcanic glass. The phenocrysts of plagioclase are characterized by a «sieve-textured domains» structure, with oriented melt inclusions (~0,05 mm) containing primary silicate and sulfide melts. The petrochemical parameters of the Batur lavas suggest that they correspond to highalumina basalts (Al2O3≥18,0). The complex structure of zonal plagioclase phenocrysts is consistent with the rapid cooling of the initial melts, when the released plagioclase cannot come into equilibrium with the remaining liquid magma. Its bulk chemical composition corresponds to labrador-bytownite. Olivine reveals several variants for iron redistribution in its composition including zonal crystals with iron accumulation in the marginal parts of grains, specific «excolutions structures» and homogeneous olivine crystals with Mg#(Fo) [=Mg/(Fe2++Mg)*100 % atomic ratio] component ~66,0. The increased iron content and manganese oxide alloy (Mn2+) in olivine may indicate that the Batur lavas are derivatives from the olivine basalt with an alkaline bias. Presumably, during the period of intense volcanism Batur volcano eruption in 1964, the magma chamber was periodically enriched with olivine basalt at some regularity. Further, this melt rose to the upper part of the chamber, followed by fractionation of olivine and clinopyroxene during crystallization of plagioclase and their accumulation in the upper part of the magma chamber. During the period of the input of a new portion of the initial melt, the existing mixture had not come into equilibrium with the incoming portion of the melt, has erupted to the surface and formed the lavas of high-alumina basalt. The presence of covellite and chalcopyrite globules in melt inclusions in the phenocrysts of plagioclase may be the evidence of the existence of a highly fractionated sulfide melt at a deeper level.

At the Black Mountain porphyry Cu-Au deposit in the Baguio district, Northern Luzon (Philippines), pre- and synmineralized rocks preserve magmatic and hydrothermal minerals (e.g., plagioclase, amphibole, titanite, and epidote) spanning the complete paragenesis of the deposit. Strontium isotope values in early crystallized plagioclase phenocrysts from all felsic porphyries can be divided into two types. The type-I plagioclase crystals show relatively homogeneous Sr isotope values (0.7035–0.7038, 1σ

Postorogenic volcanic rocks of different Tertiary ages are very common in the Sava-Vardar Zone of the Dinarides and in the southeastern part of adjoing Pannonian Basin. South of the Sava-Vardar Zone, in central Bosnia, Tertiary volcanic rocks occur within ophiolite sequences and genetically related sedimentary formations of the Dinaride Ophiolite Zone. Central Bosnia volcanic rocks are mostly dacites, and highly subordinately andesites as the members of the high-K calc-alkaline series.It appears from the mineralogical and petrographic characteristics obtained some insight into the processes that occurred during the genesis of the rocks. The presence of primary igneous minerals: clinopyroxene, orthopyroxene, hornblende and biotite from ferromagnesian minerals, and plagioclase, sanidine and quartz, indicates that the fractional crystallization played a significant role in the genesis of the rocks. Reaction edge on many rounded quartz phenocrysts indicates the possibility of magma mixing with the formation of Tertiary volcanic rocks of the central Bosnia. On magma mixing different temperature and chemical composition also indicates the existence of zoned plagioclase and amphibole phenocrysts.Complex compositional and zoning patterns of biotite and plagioclase phenocrysts and disequilibrium microstructures of plagioclase and quartz phenocrysts suggest interaction of fractionating, mantle derived melts with continental crust during a shalow level pre-eruptive stage and mixing with small amount of devolatilized phlogopite-phyric mafic magma before eruption.

The Třebic Pluton (TP) comprises plutonic rocks of the ‘durbachite series’, i.e., ultrapotassic biotite–amphibole quartz melasyenites–melagranites with conspicuous K-feldspar phenocrysts and abundant mafic enclaves. The TP with its satellite bodies intruded the eastern Moldanubian Zone (orogenic root of the Variscan Bohemian Massif) at c. 338 Ma. Overall, the entire TP durbachite series (SiO2 = 52–67 wt%) remains highly magnesian, reduced, and (except when strongly contaminated) metaluminous. The durbachitic rocks are markedly enriched in lithophile elements (esp. Cs, Rb, Th, U, K and Pb) and LREE; in contrast, the contents of high-field strength elements (Nb, Ta, and Ti) and Sr are much lower, resulting in conspicuous negative anomalies in Primitive mantle-normalized multielement plots. The proposed petrogenetic model requires re-enrichment of the depleted, harzburgitic lithospheric mantle by deeply subducted crustal material of the Saxothuringian lower plate, directly and/or via (U)HP melt/fluid. This process produced phlogopite-rich metasomes (phlogopite harzburgites and/or glimmerites). The metasomes re-melted soon thereafter by a short thermal pulse caused by slab break-off or decompression melting of rising diapirs of the relatively light metasomatized mantle, yielding primary ultrapotassic melts (87Sr/86Sr337 > 0.712 and $$\varepsilon_{{{\text{Nd}}}}^{337}$$ ≤ 7.6). Upon their passage through the Moldanubian upper plate, ultrapotassic primary magmas mixed with felsic anatectic melts (87Sr/86Sr337 – 6.5). K-feldspar-driven fractional crystallization ± accumulation represented only a late modifying influence. The occurrence of such ultrapotassic enriched/crustally contaminated mantle-derived magmatism complicates any conventional mass-balance assessments of relative roles of crustal recycling vs. growth in hot collisional orogens, e.g., Variscides or Himalayas.

The mechanisms of the occurrence of nonequilibrium oxygen isotope fractionation between olivine and plagioclase phenocrysts and the groundmass of rocks (from alkaline basalts to alkaline rhyolites) of Changbaishan volcano are considered. The basaltic trachyandesite–trachyte–comendite–pantellerite rock series shows a systematic increase of the δ18O values of feldspar (from 5.4 to 7.8‰) and the rock groundmass (from 5.6 to 7.1‰). In contrast, the δ18О values of olivine decrease from 5.35‰ typical of mantle peridotites to significantly lower values (3.88–4.14‰). This is accompanied by changes in olivine composition from the Mg-rich (Fo = 74–79) to almost pure fayalite (Fo = 1), thus indicating a positive correlation between the Mg–number and δ18О of olivine. It is shown that feldspar and the rock groundmass are close to the oxygen isotopic equilibrium, whereas olivine–rock groundmass and olivine–feldspar pairs did not approach the oxygen isotopic equilibrium. The main mechanisms leading to the oxygen isotopic disequilibrium in the mineral–melt system are considered. An approach to the estimation of oxygen isotope equilibrium between the phenocrysts and melts is proposed. It takes into account the degree of melt polymerization (NBO/T ratio). This approach makes it possible to explain the positive correlation between δ18О values and olivine Mg-numbers in the Changbaishan lavas, as well as the occurrence of low δ18O values (down to +3‰) in ferrous olivine from alkaline–salic rocks. The δ18О values observed in the olivine and the rock groundmass reflect changes in the degree of melt polymerization during crystal fractionation. The proposed model does not require an additional geological process, in particular, the contribution of a low–δ18О material in the formation of the Changbaishan differentiated rock series.

To understand the petrogenesis and magma evolution history in the Eastern Manus Basin (EMB), geochemistry of pyroxene and plagioclase mineral phenocrysts in basaltic andesites and dacites were reported. The plagioclase-melt thermometry showed that, plagioclase in dacites crystalized in 1 027.2–1 028.5°C under 3.37–5.08 kbar, whereas in basaltic andesite was 1 181.5–1 187.0°C under 1.79–4.46 kbar. Pyroxene compositions and invariable La/Sm vs La values of whole rock powders indicate that lavas were erupted in rapid cooling rate and mainly controlled by fractional crystallization (FC). In addition, oscillatory zonings in plagioclase and pyroxene phenocrysts indicated small local perturbations and degassing episodes in the magma chamber. Some high Mg# clinopyroxene antecrysts were found in EMB lavas. The highest Mg# of parental EMB melts is 69, which falls into the range of initial partial melts from upper mantle peridotite source (68–75). In terms of isotopic compositions, the EMB lavas most likely originated from Indian-type MORB mantle which was influenced by subduction components. In details, the subduction components are mainly derived from the dehydration of a subducted altered oceanic crust, and the contribution of sediment influence is minor. The Pb isotopic compositions and end member modeling further suggest that the source of subduction components is more likely from the Pacific Plate instead of the Solomon Plate.

Minerals that contain platinum-group elements (PGEs) and occur in some magmatic Cu-Ni sulfide deposits have been ascribed to crystallization from an originally PGE-rich sulfide liquid. The occurrence of PGE-bearing minerals (PGMs) in some sulfide-undersaturated primitive melts has been envisaged and recently reported, whereas direct crystallization of PGMs in sulfide-saturated silicate magmas is seemingly hindered by strong partitioning of PGE into immiscible sulfide melts. In this study, we discovered abundant nanoparticles containing noble metals in association with sulfide melt inclusions entrapped inside primitive olivine phenocrysts (Fo85–92) from the recent basaltic magma of the Tolbachik volcano (Kamchatka arc, Russia). These nuggets occur in swarms on the surface of the sulfide globules and are represented by native metals, sulfides, and alloys of Pd, Pt, Au, Pb, and Bi. The nuggets on different globules can be either Pd- or Pt-rich nuggets, and the compositions are highly variable, even among adjacent nuggets. We argue that the diffusive supply of Pd from the external nuggets can be responsible for significant uptake of Pd (up to 2 wt%) in the sulfide melt. We consider direct crystallization of PGMs in a primitive basaltic melt undergoing sulfide unmixing, and possibly sulfide breakdown due to oxidation, as another mechanism additional to their “classic” origin from the PGE-rich sulfide melt in response to solidification.

Thin fallout tuffs are common in the terrestrial deposits of the Eocene Duchesne River Formation on the flanks of the Uinta Mountains of eastern Utah. Their ages and compositions provide new insight into the tectonic events and magmatic history of the western Cordillera and provide important constraints on the Cenozoic land mammal chronology. Whole-rock compositions of the volcanic ash show that they underwent post-emplacement argillic alteration, typical of a wetland/floodplain depositional setting. However, immobile element ratios and abundances, such as Zr/Ti, La/Nb, and Y are typical of rhyolites formed in a subduction-related setting. Glass shards preserved in one sample all had SiO2 values >75%, typical of high-silica rhyolite. Preserved phenocrysts in the ash beds include quartz, sanidine, plagioclase, and biotite with variable amounts of accessory zircon, apatite, titanite, and allanite. Biotite compositions have Fe/(Fe+Mg) ratios typical of calc-alkaline igneous rocks and clusters of chemical compositions suggest a genetic relationship to three or four separate eruptions. Sanidine compositions from five samples range from Or73 and Or79. Only one sample had preserved plagioclase with compositions ranging between An22 – An49. Allanite from the ash beds has lower total rare earth elements (REE) concentrations than allanite from other well-studied rhyolites. Titanite in one sample has lower concentrations of REE, Fe, and Al than expected of rhyolites and is probably detrital.Plagioclase and sanidine from two different tuff beds near the middle of the Duchesne River Formation yielded analytically indistinguishable 40Ar/39Ar ages of 39.47 ± 0.16 Ma and 39.36 ± 0.15 Ma, respectively. These dates, along with the compositional data seem to limit the eruptive source for these fallout tuffs to the northeast Nevada volcanic field, one of the few volcanically active regions of western North America at the time. These new radiometric ages, along with stratigraphic relations and previously published ages for tuffs in the Bishop Conglomerate (which unconformably overlies the Duchesne River Formation), constrain the timing of late Laramide uplift in the region from 39 to about 37 Ma and post-Laramide epeirogenic uplift from 34 Ma to 30 Ma. Finally, the ages also provide additional evidence that the Duchesnean North American Land Mammal Age ended in the Eocene, which was originally named and defined from the Duchesne River Formation.

Understanding the relationship between mineral occurrences and host granitic rocks can be controversial. The Zaozigou Au-Sb deposit (118 t Au, 0.12 Mt Sb), hosted in metasedimentary rocks and dacitic to granodioritic sills and dikes, is one such example of a large gold deposit argued to have formed from either magmatic or metamorphic hydrothermal processes. Two populations of monazite are identified within a mineralized dacite located along a major shear zone. Magmatic monazite commonly occurs within magmatic biotite and quartz phenocrysts and is characterized by uniform and high Th concentrations. It has a crystallization age of 238.3 ± 2.6 Ma, consistent with the zircon U-Pb age of 238.0 ± 1.8 Ma from the same dacite. Hydrothermal monazite is associated with sulfides and sericite, and has a 207Pb-corrected 206Pb/238U age of 211.1 ± 3.0 Ma. The amount of Th in hydrothermal monazite is widely variable. The low Th content of some monazite grains reflects direct precipitation from a metamorphic hydrothermal fluid. Furthermore, the elevated Th content in other hydrothermal monazite grains is likely due to the release of Th (and U) into hydrothermal fluids by dissolution of pre-existing Th-rich minerals in the country rock during ore-related alteration events. The magmatism, which overlaps Middle-Late Triassic terrane subduction-accretion in the West Qinling orogen, thus pre-dates the ore-forming event by about 30 m.y. The δ34S values of pyrite, arsenopyrite, stibnite, marcasite, and chalcopyrite from disseminated- and vein-type ores range from − 12.0 to − 5.5‰. Such negative values are distinct from those measured for other deposits in the northwestern part of the orogen that are genetically related to Triassic magmatism, including the Xiekeng-Jiangligou-Shuangpengxi Cu-Au-Fe-Mo skarn, Laodou reduced intrusion-related Au, and Gangcha epithermal Au ores. The Zaozigou deposit is best classified as an epizonal orogenic Au-Sb deposit. Our results demonstrate the usefulness of high-precision in situ geochronology on monazite for deciphering age relationships in ore deposits that have spatial associations with granitic rocks, thus aiding in the testing of the veracity of ore formation models.

Understanding the mechanisms responsible for the interplay between mafic and felsic magmas is the key to retrieving information on their sources, and characterizing the exchange of mass between them. In order to characterize compositional and mineralogical changes in the mafic end-member during mafic-felsic magma interaction and to better understand the nature of early Paleozoic intracontinental magmatism in the South China Block (SCB), a detailed study was conducted on an early Paleozoic hornblendite-quartz monzonite suite in the SCB. The amphibole phenocrysts in the hornblendite are zoned with respect to major and trace elements. From the brown core to the light-green rim, these amphibole phenocrysts display significant increases in Si, Mg, and Mn, coupled with abrupt decreases in Al, Ti, Na, K, and most of the trace elements, but only minor variations in Ca, Fe, Co, and Ni. The light-green matrix amphiboles in the hornblendite have similar compositions to the outer rim of amphibole phenocrysts (except Na). It is important to note that the amphibole grains in the quartz monzonite have significantly higher rare-earth element (REE) contents than the amphibole grains in the hornblendite. There is convincing evidence to support a significant transfer of incompatible elements (e.g., K, Na, LILE, LREE, U, and Th) from the felsic magma to the mafic magma, such as (1) the absence of high-Ca plagioclase in hornblendite, with the majority of feldspar grains being albite (Ab96–97) and orthoclase (Or94–96), and (2) uniform Sr-Nd-Hf isotope compositions (initial 87Sr/86Sr = 0.7081–0.7098; eNd(t) = −6.8 to −6.3; weighted mean zircon eHf(t) = −8.0 to −7.4) for the hornblendite and quartz monzonite samples. It is, therefore, suggested that during mafic-felsic magma interaction, water was transferred from the quartz monzonite magma to the coeval hornblendite magma and promoted the formation of the amphibole crystals in the latter. The incompatible elements transferred from the quartz monzonite magma to the hornblendite magma were mainly incorporated into the late-crystallized anhedral phases in the hornblendite (e.g., orthoclase, sodic plagioclase, quartz, zircon, and apatite). This study suggests that water, which behaves as a supercritical fluid in most mafic-felsic magmas, may play a key role in the exchange of mass between mafic and felsic magmas, and this may be extended to the petrogenesis of biotite-amphibole aggregations in intermediate-felsic magmas.

The ‘Lower Kaimur Porcellanite’ from the Proterozoic Vindhyan Supergroup (∼1700–900? Ma) is not only a chronostratigraphic marker but also an indicator of the tectonic setting of the basin. A few other silicified shaly units (porcellanites) from the upper strata have been thought to be tuff. New petrographic (optical microscopic; SEM-BSE), chemical, and U-Pb zircon geochronological studies of the lowermost of these suspected tuff units, however, do not support an igneous origin for these beds. The rocks do not contain phenocrysts or glass shards, but contain remains of mineralized microbial spheres, mudclasts, and other detrital grains that include one datable zircon grain (∼1715 Ma). Their chemical compositions are not diagnostic of tuff. Despite this result, investigations of other porcellanites from Upper Vindhyan strata is recommended, because they have the potential of identifying crucially important tuff beds.

Late Pleistocene tephras derived by large explosive volcanic eruptions are widespread in the Mediterranean and surrounding areas. They are important isochronous markers in stratigraphic sections and therefore it is important to constrain their sources. We report here tephrochronology results using multiple criteria to characterize the volcanic products of the Late Pleistocene Ciomadul volcano in eastern-central Europe. This dacitic volcano had an explosive eruption stage between 57 and 30 ka. The specific petrological character (ash texture, occurrence of plagioclase and amphibole phenocrysts and their composition), the high-K calc-alkaline major element composition and particularly the distinct trace element characteristics provide a strong fingerprinting of the Ciomadul volcano. This can be used for correlating tephra and cryptotephra occurrences within this timeframe. Remarkably, during this time there were several volcanic eruptions produced tephras with similar glass major element composition. However, these tephras differ from Ciomadul ones by glass trace element abundances, ratios of strongly incompatible trace elements and distinctive mineral cargo that serve as discrimination tools. We used (U-Th)/He zircon dates combined with U-Th in-situ rim dates along with luminescence and radiocarbon dating to constrain the age of the explosive eruptions of Ciomadul that yielded distal tephra layers, but lack of identified proximal deposits.
