The heart's intricate myocardial architecture has been called the Gordian knot of anatomy, an impossible tangle of intricate muscle fibers. This complexity dictates equally complex cardiac motions that are difficult to mimic in physical systems. If these motions could be generated by a robotic system, then cardiac device testing, cardiovascular disease studies, and surgical procedure training could reduce their reliance on animal models, saving time, costs, and lives. This work introduces a bioinspired soft robotic left ventricle simulator capable of reproducing the minutiae of cardiac motion while providing physiological pressures. This device uses thin-filament artificial muscles to mimic the multilayered myocardial architecture. To demonstrate the device's ability to follow the cardiac motions observed in the literature, we used canine myocardial strain data as input signals that were subsequently applied to each artificial myocardial layer. The device's ability to reproduce physiological volume and pressure under healthy and heart failure conditions, as well as effective simulation of a cardiac support device, were experimentally demonstrated in a left-sided mock circulation loop. This work also has the potential to deliver faithful simulated cardiac motion for preclinical device and surgical procedure testing, with the potential to simulate patient-specific myocardial architecture and motion.

Flexible robotic systems (FRSs) and wearable user interfaces (WUIs) have been widely used in medical fields, offering lower infection risk and shorter recovery, and supporting amiable human-machine interactions (HMIs). Recently, soft electric, thermal, magnetic, and fluidic actuators with enhanced safety and compliance have innovatively boosted the use of FRSs and WUIs across many sectors. Among them, soft hydraulic actuators offer great speed, low noise, and high force density. However, they currently require bulky electric motors/pumps, pistons, valves, rigid accessories, and complex controllers, which inherently result in high cost, low adaptation, and complex setups. This paper introduces a novel soft fibrous syringe architecture (SFSA) consisting of two or more hydraulically connected soft artificial muscles that enable electricity-free actuation, motorless control, and built-in sensing ability for use in FRSs and WUIs. Its capabilities are experimentally demonstrated with various robotic applications including teleoperated flexible catheters, cable-driven continuum robotic arms, and WUIs. In addition, its sensing abilities to detect passive and active touch, surface texture, and object stiffness are also proven. In an effort to pursue a green synthesis approach, the biosynthesis of nano-silver (nAg) using plant extracts has garnered significant attention, particularly for its antimicrobial resistance and medical applications, which have been the focus of numerous studies. However, there remains a gap in surface catalytic studies, especially regarding the hydrogenation of 4-nitrophenol. While some studies have addressed catalytic kinetics, thermodynamic aspects have been largely overlooked, leaving the catalytic mechanisms of biosynthesized nAg unclear. In this context, the present work offers a straightforward, eco-friendly, and efficient protocol to obtain nano-silver inspired by Musa paradisiaca L. peel extract. This nAg serves multiple purposes, including antimicrobial resistance and as an eco-catalyst for hydrogenation. Predominantly consisting of zero-valent silver with anisotropic polyhedral shapes, mainly decahedra with an edge length of 50 nm, this nAg demonstrated effective antimicrobial action against both S. aureus and E. coli bacteria. More importantly, both kinetic and thermodynamic studies on the hydrogenation of 4-nitrophenol to 4-aminophenol catalyzed by this bio-inspired nAg revealed that the rate-limiting step is not diffusion-limited. Instead, the adsorbed hydrogen and 4-nitrophenolate react together via electron transfer on the surface of the nAg. Enhancing the operational efficacy of electrical discharge machining (EDM) is crucial for achieving optimal results in various engineering materials. This study introduces an innovative solution-the use of coated electrodes-representing a significant advancement over current limitations. The choice of coating material is critical for micro-EDM performance, necessitating a thorough investigation of its impact. This research explores the application of different coating materials (AlCrN, TiN, and Carbon) on WC electrodes in micro-EDM processes specifically designed for Ti-6Al-4V. A comprehensive assessment was conducted, focusing on key quality indicators such as depth of cut (Z), tool wear rate (TWR), overcut (OVC), and post-machining surface quality. Through rigorous experimental methods, the study demonstrates substantial improvements in these quality parameters with coated electrodes. The results show significant enhancements, including increased Z, reduced TWR and OVC, and improved surface quality. This evidence underscores the effectiveness of coated electrodes in enhancing micro-EDM performance, marking a notable advancement in the precision and quality of Ti-6Al-4V machining processes. Among the evaluated coatings, AlCrN-coated electrodes exhibited the greatest increase in Z, the most significant reduction in TWR, and the best OVC performance compared to other coatings and the uncoated counterpart.

With the development of Computer Vision, we can effectively and accurately identify trees, fruit or object images. But to build a high-performance image dataset for tree identification problems in Agriculture is a challenge. Realizing that Vietnam is a country with strong agriculture with many tropical fruits grown widely such as Dragon fruit, Mangosteen, Mango, Orange, Lychee, Longan … We chose the Dragon Fruit tree for the data set. of my proposed images, all images will be collected using the close-up method, including tasks such as taking photos of Dragon Fruit trees from many angles and in different conditions (weather, temperature, light, …). In this article, we want to improve the data quality of the collected images so we have applied image processing techniques such as noise filtering (using Gaussian filter), image quality enhancement (image rotation), flip the image, zoom out, zoom in, etc.). Minimally invasive procedures assisted by soft robots for surgery, diagnostics, and drug delivery have unprecedented benefits over traditional solutions from both patient and surgeon perspectives. However, the translation of such technology into commercialization remains challenging. The lack of perception abilities is one of the obstructive factors paramount for a safe, accurate and efficient robot-assisted intervention. Integrating different types of miniature sensors onto robotic end-effectors is a promising trend to compensate for the perceptual deficiencies in soft robots. For example, haptic feedback with force sensors helps surgeons to control the interaction force at the tool-tissue interface, impedance sensing of tissue electrical properties can be used for tumor detection. The last decade has witnessed significant progress in the development of multimodal sensors built on the advancement in engineering, material science and scalable micromachining technologies. This review article provides a snapshot on common types of integrated sensors for soft medical robots. Life and death education , as noted from the literatures, has been studied and researched extensively in China, Malaysia, and Taiwan. Our own research undertakings over the past several years, situated in different sociocultural settings have delved into aspects of life and death that could help advance theoretical understanding of the subject matters (e.g., does the meaning of "effective life functioning" connote differing interpretations for different cultural groups?). Situating within the framework of life and death education, we expand the study of trans-humanism by introducing an extended prefix or nomenclature known as "trans-mystical". Specifically, our philosophized concept of trans-mysticism considers a related concept, which we term as a "trans-mystical mindset". A trans-mystical mindset, differing from an ordinary mindset, from our philosophical rationalization, is defined as "a person's higher-order state of consciousness, espousing her perception, judgment, belief, and attempted interpretation of life and death phenomena that are mystifying and fall outside the ordinary boundaries of human psyche." Our focus of inquiry, as reported in the present article, seeks to advance our proposition: that a trans-mystical mindset, unlike an ordinary mindset, may help a person to rationalize, appreciate, and understand metaphysical contexts, mystical experiences, and the like. This focus, interestingly, serves to highlight an important discourse - namely, that there is a dichotomy in theoretical lenses (i.e., objective reality vs. individual subjectivity) that a person may use to rationalize the significance or non-significance of universal contexts, events, phenomena, etc. (e.g., a person's experience of "premonition"). As such, then, there is an important question that we seek to consider: whether philosophization, or the use of philosophical psychology, would yield perceived "scientific evidence" to support or to reject the study of metaphysicism, mysticism, and the like? Point-of-care monitoring of physiological signals such as electrocardiogram, electromyogram, and electroencephalogram is essential for prompt disease diagnosis and quick treatment, which can be realized through advanced skin-worn electronics. However, it is still challenging to design an intimate and nonrestrictive skin-contact device for physiological measurements with high fidelity and artifact tolerance. This research presents a facile method using a "tacky" surface to produce a tight interface between the ACNT skin-like electronic and the skin. The method provides the skin-worn electronic with a stretchability of up to 70% strain, greater than that of most common epidermal electrodes. Low-density ACNT bundles facilitate the infiltration of adhesive and improve the conformal contact between the ACNT sheet and the skin, while dense ACNT bundles lessen this effect. The stretchability and conformal contact allow the ACNT sheet-based electronics to create a tight interface with the skin, which enables the high-fidelity measurement of physiological signals (the Pearson's coefficient of 0.98) and tolerance for motion artifacts. In addition, our method allows the use of degradable substrates to enable reusability and degradability of the electronics based on ACNT sheets, integrating "green" properties into on-skin electronics.

Aim: This cross-sectional survey aimed to determine the prevalence of Interventional Nephrology (IN) practice amongst nephrologists in the Asia-Pacific Region (APR), specifically related to dialysis access (DA)., Methods: The Association of VA and intervenTionAl Renal physicians (AVATAR) Foundation from India conducted a multinational online survey amongst nephrologists from the Asia-Pacific to determine the practice of IN in the planning, creation, and management of dialysis access. The treatment modalities, manpower and equipment availability, monthly cost of treatment, specifics of dialysis access interventions, and challenges in the training and practice of IN by nephrologists were included in the survey., Results: Twenty-one countries from the APR participated in the survey. Nephrologists from 18 (85.7%) countries reported performing at least one of the basic dialysis access-related IN procedures, primarily the placement of non-tunnelled central catheters (n-TCC; 71.5%). Only 10 countries (47.6%) reported having an average of <4% of nephrologists performing any of the advanced IN access procedures, the most common being the placement of a peritoneal dialysis (PD) catheter (20%). Lack of formal training (57.14%), time (42.8%), incentive (38%), institutional support (38%), medico-legal protection (28.6%), and prohibitive cost (23.8%) were the main challenges to practice IN. Binary metastable semiconductor materials offer exciting possibilities in the field of optoelectronics, such as photovoltaics, tunable photosensors, and detectors. However, understanding their properties and translating them into practical applications can sometimes be challenging, owing to their thermodynamic instability. Herein, we report a temperature-controlled crystallization technique involving electrochemical deposition to produce metastable CuTe 2 thin films that can reliably function under ambient conditions. A series of in situ heating/cooling cycle tests from room temperature to 200 °C followed by spectral, morphological, and compound analyses (such as ultraviolet-visible light spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS)) suggest that the seeding electrodes play a key role in the realization of the metastable phase in CuTe 2 films. In particular, CuTe 2 films deposited on Al electrodes exhibit superior crystallinity and long-term stability compared with those grown on a Au substrate. The XRD data of thermally annealed CuTe 2 thin films deposited on Al show a markedly sharp peak, indicating significantly increased crystal-domain sizes. Our method can be used to achieve the metastable phase of CuTe 2 with a bandgap of 1.67 eV and offers outstanding photoresponsivity under different illumination conditions.

Work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) are often caused by repetitive lifting, making them a significant concern in occupational health. Although wearable assist devices have become the norm for mitigating the risk of back pain, most spinal assist devices still possess a partially rigid structure that impacts the user's comfort and flexibility. This paper addresses this issue by presenting a smart textile-actuated spine assistance robotic exosuit (SARE), which can conform to the back seamlessly without impeding the user's movement and is incredibly lightweight. To detect strain on the spine and to control the smart textile automatically, a soft knitting sensor that utilizes fluid pressure as a sensing element is used. Based on the soft knitting hydraulic sensor, the robotic exosuit can also feature the ability of monitoring and rectifying human posture. The SARE is validated experimentally with human subjects (N = 4). Through wearing the SARE in stoop lifting, the peak electromyography (EMG) signals of the lumbar erector spinae are reduced by 22.8% ± 12 for lifting 5 kg weights and 27.1% ± 14 in empty-handed conditions. Moreover, the integrated EMG decreased by 34.7% ± 11.8 for lifting 5 kg weights and 36% ± 13.3 in empty-handed conditions. In summary, the artificial muscle wearable device represents an anatomical solution to reduce the risk of muscle strain, metabolic energy cost and back pain associated with repetitive lifting tasks.

The development of fifth-generation (5G) communications and the Internet of Things (IoT) has created a need for high-performance sensing networks and sensors. Improving the sensitivity and reducing the energy consumption of these sensors can improve the performance of the sensing network and conserve energy. This paper reports a large enhancement of the photovoltaic effect in a 3C-SiC/Si heterostructure and the tunability of the photovoltage under the impact of a temperature gradient, which has the potential to increase the sensitivity and reduce the energy consumption of microsensors. To start with, cubic silicon carbide (3C-SiC) was grown on a silicon wafer, and a micro-3C-SiC/Si heterostructure device was then fabricated using standard photolithography. The result revealed that the sensor could either capture light energy, transform it into electrical energy for self-power purposes, or detect light with intensities of 1.6 and 4 mW/cm 2 . Under the impact of the temperature gradient induced by conduction heat transfer from a heater, the measured photovoltage was improved. This thermo-phototronic coupling enhanced the photovoltage up to 51% at a temperature gradient of 8.73 K and light intensity of 4 mW/cm 2 . Additionally, the enhancement can be tuned by controlling the direction of the temperature gradient and the temperature difference. These findings indicate the promise of the temperature gradient in SiC/Si heterostructures for developing high-performance temperature sensors and self-powered photodetectors.

Life and death education , also known as life education and death education , is an interesting subject that may coincide with the subject of lifespan development. In brief, from our theoretical perspective, which guides our teaching and curriculum development, life education considers personal understanding of life functioning on a daily basis, whereas death education explores matters that are related to death and dying. For example, how can a social worker utilize his life knowledge, or life wisdom, to assist a relative to understand the intricate nature of death? In a similar vein, how can a senior citizen use her personal experience of Buddhist meditation practice to overcome a minor Covid setback? Central to our teaching practice is the premise of 'active transformation' (i.e., transforming life knowledge into positive practice) and the premise of 'theoretical infusion' (e.g., the infusion of a distinctive epistemological belief in the teaching of life) that would, in turn, help to enhance and facilitate deep, meaningful understanding of life and death. The purpose of the present article is for us to discuss a proposition of a theoretical-conceptual model, which depicts the 'unification' or integration of three major viewpoints of life and death: the social viewpoint , the philosophical viewpoint , and the psychological viewpoint . We theorize that unification of the three theoretical viewpoints may help provide grounding for effective teaching and holistic understanding of the subject contents of life and death. Such discourse, importantly, may also assist to advance the scope and complexity of the lifespan development subject. Finally, in addition to our theoretical-conceptual model of life and death, we propose three major research inquiries for development: the meaning of situated mindset , the underlying nature of spiritual transcendence , and proposition of appropriate methodological accounts for usage. The study of optimal best practice, coinciding with a person's 'motivational mindset', is an interesting research inquiry for development. Optimal best practice, in brief, relates to the maximization of a person's state of functioning (e.g., cognitive functioning). Moreover, the nature of optimal best practice is positive and motivational, helping individuals to flourish in different courses of action (e.g., academic performance at school). Several research undertakings, non-experimental in design, have provided clear and consistent evidence to substantiate the existing viewpoints and perspectives of optimal best practice. Our proposed investigation, which involved physical education pre-service teacher students from Spain (N = 681), explored one notable focus of inquiry-namely, the formation of optimal best practice and its predictive and explanatory account on future adaptive outcomes. As such, using Likert-scale measures and path analysis techniques, we were able to identify two associative patterns: achievement of optimal best practice is positively accounted for by academic self-concept, optimism, and current best practice and, in contrast, negatively accounted for by pessimism; and that optimal best practice could act as a determinant of academic engagement for effective learning. Electrohydrodynamic atomization (EHDA) provides unparalleled control over the size and production rate of particles from solution. However, conventional methods produce highly charged particles that are not appropriate for inhalation drug delivery. We present a self-propelled EHDA system to address this challenge, a promising one-step platform for generating and delivering charge-reduced particles. Our approach uses a sharp electrode to produce ion wind, which reduces the cumulative charge in the particles and transports them to a target in front of the nozzle. We effectively controlled the morphologies of polymer products created from poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) at various concentrations. Our technique has also been proven safe for bioapplications, as evidenced by the delivery of PVDF particles onto breast cancer cells. The combination of simultaneous particle production and charge reduction, along with its direct delivery capability, makes the self-propelled EHDA a versatile technique for drug delivery applications.

Palpation is a simple but effective method to distinguish tumors from healthy tissues. The development of miniaturized tactile sensors embedded on endoscopic or robotic devices is key to achieving precise palpation diagnosis and subsequent timely treatment. This paper reports on the fabrication and characterization of a novel tactile sensor with mechanical flexibility and optical transparency that can be easily mounted on soft surgical endoscopes and robotics. By utilizing the pneumatic sensing mechanism, the sensor offers a high sensitivity of 1.25 mbar and negligible hysteresis, enabling the detection of phantom tissues with different stiffnesses ranging from 0 to 2.5 MPa. Our configuration, combining pneumatic sensing and hydraulic actuating, also eliminates electrical wiring from the functional elements located at the robot end-effector, thereby enhancing the system safety. The optical transparency path in the sensors together with its mechanical sensing capability open interesting possibilities in the early detection of solid tumor as well as in the development of all-in-one soft surgical robots that can perform visual/mechanical feedback and optical therapy.

Cellulose, the most abundant natural polymer on earth, has recently gained attention for a large spectrum of applications. At a nanoscale, nanocelluloses (mainly involving cellulose nanocrystals or cellulose nanofibrils) possess many predominant features, such as highly thermal and mechanical stability, renewability, biodegradability and non-toxicity. More importantly, the surface modification of such nanocelluloses can be efficiently obtained based on the native surface hydroxyl groups, acting as metal ions chelators. Taking into account this fact, in the present work, the sequential process involving chemical hydrolysis of cellulose and autocatalytic esterification using thioglycolic acid was performed to obtain thiol-functionalized cellulose nanocrystals. The change in chemical compositions was attributed to thiol-functionalized groups and explored via the degree of substitution using a back titration method, X-ray powder diffraction, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis. Cellulose nanocrystals were spherical in shape and ca. 50 nm in diameter as observed via transmission electron microscopy. The adsorption behavior of such a nanomaterial toward divalent copper ions from an aqueous solution was also assessed via isotherm and kinetic studies, elucidating a chemisorption mechanism (ion exchange, metal chelation and electrostatic force) and processing its operational parameters. In contrast to an inactive configure of unmodified cellulose, the maximum adsorption capacity of thiol-functionalized cellulose nanocrystals toward divalent copper ions from an aqueous solution was 4.244 mg g -1 at a pH of 5 and at room temperature.

Three-dimensional (3D) bioprinting technology offers great potential in the treatment of tissue and organ damage. Conventional approaches generally rely on a large form factor desktop bioprinter to create in vitro 3D living constructs before introducing them into the patient's body, which poses several drawbacks such as surface mismatches, structure damage, and high contamination along with tissue injury due to transport and large open-field surgery. In situ bioprinting inside a living body is a potentially transformational solution as the body serves as an excellent bioreactor. This work introduces a multifunctional and flexible in situ 3D bioprinter (F3DB), which features a high degree of freedom soft printing head integrated into a flexible robotic arm to deliver multilayered biomaterials to internal organs/tissues. The device has a master-slave architecture and is operated by a kinematic inversion model and learning-based controllers. The 3D printing capabilities with different patterns, surfaces, and on a colon phantom are also tested with different composite hydrogels and biomaterials. The F3DB capability to perform endoscopic surgery is further demonstrated with fresh porcine tissue. Flexible and implantable electronics hold tremendous promises for advanced healthcare applications, especially for physiological neural recording and modulations. Key requirements in neural interfaces include miniature dimensions for spatial physiological mapping and low impedance for recognizing small biopotential signals. Herein, a bottom-up mesoporous formation technique and a top-down microlithography process are integrated to create flexible and low-impedance mesoporous gold (Au) electrodes for biosensing and bioimplant applications. The mesoporous architectures developed on a thin and soft polymeric substrate provide excellent mechanical flexibility and stable electrical characteristics capable of sustaining multiple bending cycles. The large surface areas formed within the mesoporous network allow for high current density transfer in standard electrolytes, highly suitable for biological sensing applications as demonstrated in glucose sensors with an excellent detection limit of 1.95 µm and high sensitivity of 6.1 mA cm -2  µM -1 , which is approximately six times higher than that of benchmarking flat/non-porous films. The low impedance of less than 1 kΩ at 1 kHz in the as-synthesized mesoporous electrodes, along with their mechanical flexibility and durability, offer peripheral nerve recording functionalities that are successfully demonstrated in vivo. As the most abundant natural biopolymer on earth, celluloses have long-term emerged as a capable platform for diverse purposes. In the context of metal nanoparticles applied to catalysis, the alternatives to traditional catalyst supports by using biomass-derived renewable materials, likely nanocelluloses, have been paid a great effort, in spite of being less exploited. In this study, cellulose nanocrystals were isolated from corn leaf via chemical treatment involving alkalizing, bleaching and acid hydrolysis. The crystallinity of obtained cellulose was evaluated in each step, focusing on the effects of reactant concentration and reaction time. Cellulose nanocrystals were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), evidencing the presence of cellulose nanospheres (crystallinity index of 67.3% in comparison with 38.4% from untreated raw material) in the size range of 50 nm. Without using any additional surfactants or stabilizers, silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) well-dispersed on the surface of cellulose nanocrystals (silver content of 5.1 wt%) could be obtained by a simple chemical reduction using NaBH 4 at room temperature. The catalytic activity was evaluated in the selective reductions of 4-nitrophenol towards 4-aminophenol and methyl orange towards aromatic amine derivatives in water at room temperature. The effects of catalyst amount and reaction time were also studied in both reduction processes, showing near-quantitative conversions within 5 minutes and obeying the pseudo-first-order kinetics, with the apparent kinetic rate constants of 8.9 × 10 -3 s -1 (4-nitrophenol) and 13.6 × 10 -3 s -1 (methyl orange). Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has caused a global pandemic with over 5 million fatalities. Vaccines against this virus have been globally administered; however, SARS-CoV-2 variants with spike protein mutations are continuously identified with strong capability to escape vaccine-elicited protection. Due to the high mutation rate and transmission ability, the development of a broad-spectrum SARS-CoV-2 inhibitor is highly in demand. In this study, the effect of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) against SARS-CoV-2 was investigated. The treatment of pseudoviruses carrying the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein with PEDOT:PSS strongly blocked SARS-CoV-2 pseudovirus infection in human ACE2-expressing cells without causing cytotoxicity. Specifically, PEDOT:PSS showed great potential in both inactivating viruses and rendering antiviral activity to the treated cells. The effects of other PEDOT:PSS solutions with different chemical ratios and properties were also validated to find the high inhibition capacity against SARS-CoV-2 pseudovirus infection. The transcriptomic data reveal that PEDOT:PSS-treated cells were endowed with transcriptional alteration, and it could be reverted after the removal of PEDOT:PSS from the culture medium. Importantly, PEDOT:PSS also exhibited broad-spectrum inhibition effects on the pseudovirus carrying the spike protein isolated from different variants. In combination with the advantage of high biocompatibility, PEDOT:PSS could thus be considered a potential therapeutic and prophylactic material against SARS-CoV-2.

A green synthesis using extract from Citrus maxima peel was developed to fabricate Au-Ce catalysts for the reduction of p -nitrophenol (PNP). Au nanoparticles with a diameter of 6.6 ± 2.5 nm were deposited onto the surface of CeO 2 nanorods with a length of 33.1 ± 15.0 nm and a diameter of 7.1 ± 2.1 nm. The mesoporous and non-porous capillary structures of these materials were observed. The interaction between Au and CeO 2 increased the specific surface area, pore diameter, and pore volume compared with pure CeO 2 (90 m 2 g -1 , 23.8 Å, and 0.110 cm 3 g -1 versus 72 m 2 g -1 , 23.0 Å, and 0.089 cm 3 g -1 ). The splitting peaks of the surface oxygen and their shifting at lower temperatures compared with CeO 2 nanorods were found thanks to the Au-CeO 2 interaction, suggesting that their reduction occurred more easily. The synthesized Au-Ce catalysts exhibited excellent activity in the reduction of PNP to p -aminophenol. The 0.2Au-Ce catalyst was the most efficient one for PNP reduction, enabling the conversion of PNP in 30 minutes with a catalyst concentration of 20 mg L -1 and a PNP/NaBH 4 molar ratio of 1/200. Electrical neuron stimulation holds promise for treating chronic neurological disorders, including spinal cord injury, epilepsy, and Parkinson's disease. The implementation of ultrathin, flexible electrodes that can offer noninvasive attachment to soft neural tissues is a breakthrough for timely, continuous, programable, and spatial stimulations. With strict flexibility requirements in neural implanted stimulations, the use of conventional thick and bulky packages is no longer applicable, posing major technical issues such as short device lifetime and long-term stability. We introduce herein a concept of long-lived flexible neural electrodes using silicon carbide (SiC) nanomembranes as a faradic interface and thermal oxide thin films as an electrical barrier layer. The SiC nanomembranes were developed using a chemical vapor deposition (CVD) process at the wafer level, and thermal oxide was grown using a high-quality wet oxidation technique. The proposed material developments are highly scalable and compatible with MEMS technologies, facilitating the mass production of long-lived implanted bioelectrodes. Our experimental results showed excellent stability of the SiC/silicon dioxide (SiO 2 ) bioelectronic system that can potentially last for several decades with well-maintained electronic properties in biofluid environments. We demonstrated the capability of the proposed material system for peripheral nerve stimulation in an animal model, showing muscle contraction responses comparable to those of a standard non-implanted nerve stimulation device. The design concept, scalable fabrication approach, and multimodal functionalities of SiC/SiO 2 flexible electronics offer an exciting possibility for fundamental neuroscience studies, as well as for neural stimulation-based therapies.

The integration of micro- and nanoelectronics into or onto biomedical devices can facilitate advanced diagnostics and treatments of digestive disorders, cardiovascular diseases, and cancers. Recent developments in gastrointestinal endoscopy and balloon catheter technologies introduce promising paths for minimally invasive surgeries to treat these diseases. However, current therapeutic endoscopy systems fail to meet requirements in multifunctionality, biocompatibility, and safety, particularly when integrated with bioelectronic devices. Here, we report materials, device designs, and assembly schemes for transparent and stable cubic silicon carbide (3C-SiC)-based bioelectronic systems that facilitate tissue ablation, with the capability for integration onto the tips of endoscopes. The excellent optical transparency of SiC-on-glass (SoG) allows for direct observation of areas of interest, with superior electronic functionalities that enable multiple biological sensing and stimulation capabilities to assist in electrical-based ablation procedures. Experimental studies on phantom, vegetable, and animal tissues demonstrated relatively short treatment times and low electric field required for effective lesion removal using our SoG bioelectronic system. In vivo experiments on an animal model were conducted to explore the versatility of SoG electrodes for peripheral nerve stimulation, showing an exciting possibility for the therapy of neural disorders through electrical excitation. The multifunctional features of SoG integrated devices indicate their high potential for minimally invasive, cost-effective, and outcome-enhanced surgical tools, across a wide range of biomedical applications.

The integration of nanoarchitectonics and hydrogel into conventional biosensing platforms offers the opportunities to design physically and chemically controlled and optimized soft structures with superior biocompatibility, better immobilization of biomolecules, and specific and sensitive biosensor design. The physical and chemical properties of 3D hydrogel structures can be modified by integrating with nanostructures. Such modifications can enhance their responsiveness to mechanical, optical, thermal, magnetic, and electric stimuli, which in turn can enhance the practicality of biosensors in clinical settings. This review describes the synthesis and kinetics of gel networks and exploitation of nanostructure-integrated hydrogels in biosensing. With an emphasis on different integration strategies of hydrogel with nanostructures, this review highlights the importance of hydrogel nanostructures as one of the most favorable candidates for developing ultrasensitive biosensors. Atherothrombosis, an atherosclerotic plaque disruption condition with superimposed thrombosis, is the underlying cause of cardiovascular episodes. Herein, a unique design is presented to develop a microfluidic site-specific atherothrombosis-on-chip model, providing a universal platform for studying the crosstalk between blood cells and plaque components. The device consists of two interconnected microchannels, namely main and supporting channels: the former mimics the vessel geometry with different stenosis, and the latter introduces plaque components to the circulation simultaneously. The unique design allows the site-specific introduction of plaque components in stenosed channels ranging from 0% to above 50%, resulting in thrombosis, which has not been achieved previously. The device successfully explains the correlation between vessel geometry and thrombus formation phenomenon as well as the influence of shear rate on platelet aggregation, confirming the reliability and the effectiveness of the design. The device exhibits significant sensitivity to aspirin. In therapeutic doses (50 × 10 -6 and 100 × 10 -6 m), aspirin delays and prevents platelet adhesion, thereby reducing the thrombus area in a dose-dependent manner. The marriage of textiles with artificial muscles to create smart textiles is attracting great attention from the scientific community and industry. Smart textiles offer many benefits including adaptive comfort and high conformity to objects while providing active actuation for desired motion and force. This paper introduces a new class of programmable smart textiles created from different methods of knitting, weaving, and sticking fluid-driven artificial muscle fibers. Mathematical models are developed to describe the elongation-force relationship of the knitting and weaving textile sheets, followed by experiments to validate the model effectiveness. The new smart textiles are highly flexible, conformable, and mechanically programmable, enabling multimodal motions and shape-shifting abilities for use in broader applications. Different prototypes of the smart textiles are created with experimental validations including various shape-changing instances such as elongation (up to 65%), area expansion (108%), radial expansion (25%), and bending motion. The concept of reconfiguring passive conventional fabrics into active structures for bio-inspired shape-morphing structures is also explored. In educational settings, the notion of 'achieving optimal best' in a subject matter (e.g., an elementary school student's achievement in her Year 6 Science project) is relevant for educators to consider. Optimal best, or optimal functioning, reflects the proactivity, positivity, and motivation of a person. How does a student achieve optimal best in Calculus? Our extensive research of optimal best has recognized the potency of the process of human optimization , which may operate to explain a person's successful experience and achievement of optimal best. Recently, researchers have considered another theoretical concept, which is termed as 'goals of best practice' (i.e., abbreviated as 'GsBP'). Goals of best practice, in brief, are personal goals that a person may construct and set for a particular context. Specifically, however, a 'personal goal' may indicate and espouse a person's plan of intent to either remain on course without any desire or aspiration (i.e., 'goal of actual best', denoted as 'GAB') or, alternatively, to strive for maximization (i.e., 'goal of optimal best', denoted as 'GOB'). This article is theoretical and conceptual, reflecting the use of the paradigm of philosophical psychology to advance the study of the concept of GsBP. Recent advances in micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS) has allowed unprecedent perspectives for label-free detection (LFD) of biological and chemical analytes. Additionally, these LFD technologies offer the potential to design high resolution and high throughput sensing platforms, with the promise of further miniaturization. However, the immobilization of biomolecules onto inorganic surfaces without impacting their sensing abilities is crucial for designing these LFD technologies. Currently, covalent functionalization of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) present promising pathways for improving assay sensitivity, reproducibility, surface stability and proximity of binding sites to the sensor surface. Herein, we investigate the use of chemical vapor deposition of 3-(glycidyloxypropyl)-trimethoxysilane (GOPTS) as a versatile SAM for the covalent functionalization of a SiO 2 microcantilever array (MCA) for carbohydrate-lectin interactions with picogram sensitivity. Additionally, we demonstrate glycan immobilization to MCA is feasible using traditional piezoelectric microarray printer technology. Given the complexity of the glycome, the ability to spot samples in a high-throughput manner establishes our MCA as robust, label-free, and scalable means to analyze carbohydrate-protein interactions These findings demonstrate that GOPTS SAMs provide a suitable biofunctionalization route for MEMS and provides the proof of principle that can be extended to various LFD technologies toward a truly high-throughput and high-resolution platform., (Copyright © 2022 Elsevier B.V. Studying worked examples impose relatively low cognitive load because learners' attention is directed to learn the schema, which is embedded in the worked examples. That schema encompasses both conceptual knowledge and procedural knowledge. It is well-documented that worked examples are effective in facilitating the acquisition of problem-solving skills. However, the use of worked examples to develop problem-solving expertise is less known. Typically, experts demonstrate an efficient way to solve problems that is quicker, faster, and having fewer solution steps. We reviewed five studies to validate the benefit of worked examples to develop problem-solving expertise for word problems. Overall, a diagram portrays the problem structure, coupled with either study worked examples or complete multiple example-problem pairs, facilitates the formation of an equation to solve words problems efficiently. (1) Herpes simplex virus (HSV) reactivation in critically ill patients can cause infection in the lower respiratory tract, prolonging mechanical ventilation. However, the association of HSV reactivation with cardiogenic shock (CS) is unclear. As CS is often accompanied by pulmonary congestion and reduced immune system activity, the aim of our study was to determine the incidence and outcome of HSV reactivation in these patients. (2) In this retrospective, single-center study, bronchial lavage (BL) was performed on 181 out of 837 CS patients with mechanical ventilation. (3) In 44 of those patients, HSV was detected with a median time interval of 11 days since intubation. The occurrence of HSV was associated with an increase in C-reactive protein and the fraction of inspired oxygen at the time of HSV detection. Arterial hypertension, bilirubin on ICU admission, the duration of mechanical ventilation and out-of-hospital cardiac arrest were associated with HSV reactivation. (4) HSV reactivation could be detected in 24.3% of patients with CS on whom BL was performed, and its occurrence should be considered in patients with prolonged mechanical ventilation. Due to the limited current evidence, the initiation of treatment for these patients remains an individual choice. Dedicated randomized studies are necessary to investigate the efficacy of antiviral therapy.

A liquid marble is a liquid droplet coated with a shell of microparticles. Liquid marbles have served as a unique microreactor for chemical reactions and cell culture. Mixing is an essential task for liquid marbles as a microreactor. However, the potential of liquid marble-based microreactors is significantly limited due to the lack of effective mixing strategies. Most mixing strategies used manual and contact-based actuation schemes. This paper reports the development of a manipulation scheme that induces fluid motion into a liquid marble, leading to enhanced mixing. By inducing rotation on a horizontal axis, we significantly increased the mixing rate by 27.6 times compared to a non-actuated liquid marble and reduced the reaction time by more than 10 times. The proposed method provides a simple, continuous, precise, and controllable high-performance mixing strategy on a liquid marble platform.

The paradigm of positive psychology is significant in introducing positive psychological concepts such as "flourishing," "optimal best," and "a state of flow." In terms of research development of positive psychology, the researchers of this article have made extensive theoretical, empirical, and methodological contributions by advancing the study of optimal best. One aspect of this research, notably, consists of advancement of the psychological process of optimization . Optimization, in brief, provides a theoretical account into the "optimization" of a person's state of functioning. Non-academically, a Buddhist nun's seeking to successfully achieve an optimal state of enlightenment or, academically, a first-year student's seeking to achieve an A grade in Psych 101 would require some form of optimization. Recent research development has, interestingly, considered a related concept known as "goals of best practice" (GsBP), which may co-exist with the process of optimization and/or assist to account for the optimization of learning experiences. This conceptual analysis article, by utilizing the paradigm of philosophical psychology , advances the study of optimal best practice by focusing on three major aspects: (i) to consider conceptually and philosophically how and/or the extent to which GsBP could, in fact, relate to the nature of flow, flourishing, and optimal best; (ii) to consider a methodological account, which could help to measure and assess the concept GsBP; and (iii) to consider the potential practicality of GsBP in educational contexts, which may assist to facilitate and motivate the achievement of optimal best. Background: Breast cancer (BC) is the most common cancer for women all over the world. Great interests have been paid to discover accurate and noninvasive methods for breast cancer diagnosis and prognosis. Although the diagnostic and prognostic value of microRNA-200 (miRNA- 200, miR-200) family has been revealed in many studies, the results were inconsistent. Thus, this meta-analysis aims to assess the overall value of miRNA-200 family in breast cancer diagnosis and prognosis., Method: Relevant studies were searched from the following databases: PubMed, PMC, EMBASE, and ScienceDirect using key words: ("miRNA-200 family" or "miR-141" or "miR-200a" or "miR-200b" or "miR-200c" or "miR-429") and ("HER2" or "Luminal A" or "Luminal B" or "TNBC") and ("breast cancers" or "breast carcinoma" or "breast malignancy" or "breast tumor"). The sensitivity, specificity, AUC were then calculated to estimate the diagnostic accuracy of the miR-200 family. As for the prognostic value of the miR-200 family, the pooled hazard ratio (HR) was assessed. Heterogeneity among individual studies was also examined by subgroup analyses., Result: A total of 24 articles were included in the meta-analysis. The diagnostic value of miR-200s in BC was presented by the pooled sensitivity was 0.86 (95% CI: 0.83-0.88); the pooled specificity was 0.82 (95% CI: 0.72-0.89); the pooled AUC was 0.931 (95% CI: 0.919-0.942). Besides, expression of miR-200s in metastatic breast cancer has sensitivity, specificity and AUC of 0.70 (95%CI: 0.56-0.81), 0.72 (95%CI: 0.61-0.81), and 0.814 (95%CI: 0.741-0.903), respectively. The meta-analysis then revealed that high expression of miR-200 family corresponded to poor OS (HR: 1.63, 95% CI: 1.03-2.52), poor DFS (HR: 1.55, 95% CI: 0.95-2.56) in BC patients while downregulation of miRNA-200s corresponded to poor OS (HR= 0.84, 95%CI: 0.46-1.63) in TNBC patients and poor OS (HR=0.49; 95%CI: 0.27-0.88) in luminal BC patient., Conclusion: The MiR-200 family has high diagnostic accuracy and can be used as an important biomarker to prognosticate breast cancer., (Copyright © 2022 Elsevier Ltd. The synthesis of highly crystalline mesoporous materials is key to realizing high-performance chemical and biological sensors and optoelectronics. However, minimizing surface oxidation and enhancing the domain size without affecting the porous nanoarchitecture are daunting challenges. Herein, we report a hybrid technique that combines bottom-up electrochemical growth with top-down plasma treatment to produce mesoporous semiconductors with large crystalline domain sizes and excellent surface passivation. By passivating unsaturated bonds without incorporating any chemical or physical layers, these films show better stability and enhancement in the optoelectronic properties of mesoporous copper telluride (CuTe) with different pore diameters. Central to cognitive load theory is the concept of element interactivity, which reflects the complexity of material. The complexity of linear equations depends on the number of operational and relational lines and the nature of the operation (balance versus inverse) in the solution procedure. A relational line refers to the quantitative relation whereby the right-hand side of the equation equals to its left-hand side. An operational line refers to the application of an operation and such a procedural step preserves the equality of the linear equation. The balance method and inverse method differ in the operational line (e.g., + 3 on both sides vs.- 3 becomes + 3) where the inverse operation imposes half the level of element interactivity as the balance method. Seventy-five students randomly assigned to either the balance group or inverse group to complete (i) one-step equations (Experiment 1), (ii) two-step equations (Experiment 2), and (iii) one-step and two-step equations with a focus on equations with negative pronumerals (Experiment 3). Performance favoured the inverse group when the gap between the low and high element interactivity equations was substantial enough. Transformation of conventional 2D platforms into unusual 3D configurations provides exciting opportunities for sensors, electronics, optical devices, and biological systems. Engineering material properties or controlling and modulating stresses in thin films to pop-up 3D structures out of standard planar surfaces has been a highly active research topic over the last decade. Implementation of 3D micro and nanoarchitectures enables unprecedented functionalities including multiplexed, monolithic mechanical sensors, vertical integration of electronics components, and recording of neuron activities in 3D organoids. This paper provides an overview on stress engineering approaches to developing 3D functional microsystems. The paper systematically presents the origin of stresses generated in thin films and methods to transform a 2D design into an out-of-plane configuration. Different types of 3D micro and nanostructures, along with their applications in several areas are discussed. The paradigm of positive psychology, significant in nature, helps to explain the proactivity and motivation of human agency, such as a secondary school student's state of autonomy, confidence, and personal resolve to strive for optimal learning and/or non-learning experiences. Our recent research development, in tandem with other scholars' inquiries, has focused on one aspect of positive psychology-namely, a person's achievement of 'optimal best', which reflects the maximization of his/her state of functioning (e.g., cognitive functioning). Capitalizing on our previous research, we develop a psychological concept that we term as a 'perceived feeling of energy'. A perceived feeling of energy (e.g., a perceived feeling of liveliness) is proposed to act as a 'motivational engine', or as a central driver, which then could predict and enhance a person's achievement of optimal best. Six hundred and twenty-seven university students (N = 438 women, 189 men) responded to a suite of self-report questionnaires. Structural equation modelling (SEM) techniques were used to test a conceptual model, where we focused on the antecedent (i.e., the direct impact of self-efficacy on a perceived feeling of energy) and consequence of a perceived feeling energy (i.e., the impact of a perceived feeling of energy on personal resolve, and the sustaining of optimal best). Analysis of results showed support for our original hypothesized model-for example: self-efficacy as an antecedent of energy and the central role of the energy as a predictor and potential mediator of future outcomes., Competing Interests: The authors have declared that no competing interests exist.

We tested a theoretical-conceptual model that introduced our recently developed psychological concept, termed as psychological processes , which is defined as "a person's continuing frame of mind to focus on disposition toward strong resolute, structured thoughts and organization, and aspiration to strive for educational success." This proposition is innovative as it considers the notion that a person's mindset is malleable and, importantly, subjects to social experiences derived from a situated social context. Moreover, from our definition, we contend that psychological processes, as a distinct construct, is "latent," or underlying, with three comparable psychological attributes: personal resolve, effective functioning, and personal striving. Our conceptualization, acknowledging the importance of social contexts and individualized experience and personal belief, proposed that perceived social experiences (i.e., positive versus negative), as a source of information, would shape a student's psychological processes, his/her state of motivation, and engagement in different types of adaptive outcomes. Moreover, from our point of view, psychological processes would act as a predictor as well as a potential mediator of motivation and engagement in different types of adaptive outcomes. In a similar vein, from the positive effect of psychological processes, motivation could act as a predictor as well as a mediator of adaptive outcomes. Structural equation modeling, from Taiwanese university students' ( N = 739) responses to various Likert-scale measures, showed support for our original a priori model - for example, the positive effects of perceived social experiences on psychological processes (β = 0.81, p < 0.001) motivation (β = 0.61, p < 0.001), and adaptive outcomes (β = 0.36, p < 0.01), and the positive effect of psychological processes on motivation (β = 0.31, p < 0.01). Interestingly, we also found some interesting findings with regard to the effects of measured indicators - for example, the positive effect of personal resolve, as a measured indicator, on adaptive outcomes (β = 0.28, p < 0.001), and the effect of self-efficacy, as a measured indicator, on academic liking experience, also a measured indicator (β = 0.12, p < 0.01). Possessing expert schemas is a positive feat that may yield different types of adaptive outcomes (e.g., informing procedural understanding that may result in a student skipping a few of the solution steps involved). Limited schemas, in contrast, may deter progress of a novice learner, limiting his/her capability to flourish. Taken as a whole, it may be concluded that expert schemas are more advantageous than novice schemas, differentiating learners in terms of expert and novice. Having said this, however, more recently, researchers have argued that possessing expert schemas could serve as deterrence. Recently, researchers have acknowledged a theoretical concept known as cognitive entrenchment , which is defined as a high level of stability in domain schemas. This description interestingly suggests that "entrenchment" or "situated fixation" of a course of action (e.g., a subject matter) could hinder the progress and learning experience of a person, namely-his/her inability and/or unwillingness to adapt to a new context, and/or his/her inflexibility and insistence to stay on course without any intent to change. One example of cognitive entrenchment is observed in professional football, wherein it has been argued that some football coaches are cognitively entrenched within their expert schemas, resulting in their demised game plans and strategic acumen. We advance the study of cognitive entrenchment by proposing an alternative viewpoint, which we term as the "perceived zone of certainty and uncertainty." This proposition counters the perspective of cognitive entrenchment by arguing that it is cognitive appraisal, judgment, mental resolute, and determination of a person in cognitive certainty of his/her success or failure, or the cognitive uncertainty of success or failure, that would explain the notion of inflexibility and/or unwillingness to adapt, and/or insistence to stay on course without any attempt to deviate. Moreover, we rationalize that certainty of success or failure would closely associate with a feeling of comfort, whereas uncertainty would associate with his/her feeling discomfort. In this analysis, we strongly believe that willingness to change and adapt, reluctance and insistence to remain on course, and/or inclination to embrace flexibility may not necessarily relate to the concept of cognitive entrenchment; rather, inflexibility and/or reluctance to change for the purpose of adaptation has more to do with the desire of a person to seek a state of comfort. Finally, our conceptual analysis of cognitive entrenchment also considers an interesting theoretical concept, which we termed as "perceived optimal efficiency." Perceived optimal efficiency, similar to cognitive relevance theory , is concerned with the relationship between minimum investment of time, effort, cognitive resources, etc., and an optimal best outcome. The piezoresistive effect has been a dominant mechanical sensing principle that has been widely employed in a range of sensing applications. This transducing concept still receives great attention because of the huge demand for developing small, low-cost, and high-performance sensing devices. Many researchers have extensively explored new methods to enhance the piezoresistive effect and to make sensors more and more sensitive. Many interesting phenomena and mechanisms to enhance the sensitivity have been discovered. Numerous review papers on the piezoresistive effect have been published; however, there is no comprehensive review article that thoroughly analyses methods and approaches to enhance the piezoresistive effect. This paper comprehensively reviews and presents all the advanced enhancement methods ranging from the quantum physical effect and new materials to nanoscopic and macroscopic structures, and from conventional rigid to flexible, stretchable and wearable applications. In addition, the paper summarises results recently achieved on applying the above-mentioned innovative sensing enhancement techniques in making extremely sensitive piezoresistive transducers.

Giant piezoresistive effect enables the development of ultrasensitive sensing devices to address the increasing demands from hi-tech applications such as space exploration and self-driving cars. The discovery of the giant piezoresistive effect by optoelectronic coupling leads to a new strategy for enhancing the sensitivity of mechanical sensors, particularly with light from light-emitting diodes (LEDs). This paper reports on the piezoresistive effect in a 3C-SiC/Si heterostructure with a bonded LED that can reach a gauge factor (GF) as high as 18 000. This value represents an approximately 1000 times improvement compared to the configuration without a bonded LED. This GF is one of the highest GFs reported to date for the piezoresistive effect in semiconductors. The generation of carrier concentration gradient in the top thin 3C-SiC film under illumination from the LED coupling with the tuning current contributes to the modulation of the piezoresistive effect in a 3C-SiC/Si heterojunction. In addition, the feasibility of using different types of LEDs as the tools for modulating the piezoresistive effect is investigated by evaluating lateral photovoltage and photocurrent under LED's illumination. The generated lateral photovoltage and photocurrent are as high as 14 mV and 47.2 μA, respectively. Recent technologies for direct bonding of micro-LEDs on a Si-based device and the discovery reported here may have a significant impact on mechanical sensors.

One interesting observation that we may all concur with is that many experts, or those who are extremely knowledgeable and well-versed in their respective domains of functioning, become "mediocre" and lose their "touch of invincibility" over time. For example, in the world of professional football, it has been argued that an elite football coach would lose his/her air of invincibility and demise after 10-15 years at the top. Why is this the case? There are different reasons and contrasting viewpoints that have been offered to account for this observed demise. One notable concept, recently introduced to explain this decline, is known as cognitive entrenchment , which is concerned with a high level of stability in one's domain schemas (Dane, 2010). This entrenchment or "situated fixation," from our proposition, may act to deter the flexibility and/or willingness of a person to adapt to a new context or situation. Some writers, on this basis, have argued that cognitive entrenchment would help explain the demise of some experts and/or why some students have difficulties adapting to new situations. An initial inspection would seem to indicate that cognitive entrenchment is detrimental, potentially imparting evidence of inflexibility, difficulty, and/or the unwillingness of a person to adapt to new contexts (Dane, 2010). This premise importantly connotes that expertise may constrain a person from being flexible, innovative, and/or creative to ongoing changes. In this analysis, an expert may experience a cognitive state of entrenchment, facilitated in this case by his/her own experience, knowledge, and/or theoretical understanding of a subject matter. Having said this, however, it is also a plausibility that cognitive entrenchment in itself espouses some form of positivity, giving rise to improvement and/or achievement of different types of adaptive outcomes. Drawing from our existing research development, we propose in this conceptual analysis article that personal "entrenchment" to a particular context (e.g., the situated fixation of a football coach to a particular training methodology) may closely relate to three major elements: self-cognizance of cognitive load imposition , a need for efficiency , and the quest for stability and comfort . As we explore later, there is credence to accept the "positivity" of cognitive entrenchment-that by nature, for example, a person would purposively choose the status quo in order to minimize cognitive load imposition, optimize efficiency, and/or to achieve minimum disruption and a high level of comfort, which could then "optimize" his/her learning experiences. Inertial microfluidics is a simple, low cost, efficient size-based separation technique which is being widely investigated for rare-cell isolation and detection. Due to the fixed geometrical dimensions of the current rigid inertial microfluidic systems, most of them are only capable of isolating and separating cells with certain types and sizes. Herein, we report the design, fabrication, and validation of a stretchable inertial microfluidic device with a tuneable separation threshold that can be used for heterogenous mixtures of particles and cells. Stretchability allows for the fine-tuning of the critical sorting size, resulting in a high separation resolution that makes the separation of cells with small size differences possible. We validated the tunability of the separation threshold by stretching the length of a microchannel to separate the particle sizes of interest. We also evaluated the focusing efficiency, flow behaviour, and the positions of cancer cells and white blood cells (WBCs) in an elongated channel, separately. In addition, the performance of the device was verified by isolating cancer cells from WBCs which revealed a high recovery rate and purity. The stretchable chip showed promising results in the separation of cells with comparable sizes. Further validation of the chip using whole blood spiked with cancer cells delivered a 98.6% recovery rate with 90% purity. Elongating a stretchable microfluidic chip enables onsite modification of the dimensions of a microchannel leading to a precise tunability of the separation threshold as well as a high separation resolution.

Recently, adsorption techniques have emerged as practical and effective methods for removing organic dyes, dramatically extending practical capabilities for treating deleterious pollutants in wastewater. However, an urgent issue restricting the performance of these techniques is that no available absorbents that can be used to treat both cationic and anionic organic dyes have been made with simple and reliable methods until now. Herein, we report a green synthetic strategy for the preparation of SnFe 2 O 4 /ZnO nanoparticles decorated on reduced graphene oxide (rGO), exhibiting a remarkably large surface area (120.33 m 2 g -1 ). Substantial adsorption efficiency for removing MB dye was achieved, with 91.3% removal within 20 min at room temperature, and efficiencies of 79.6 to 92.8% are maintained as the pH conditions are varied from 3 to 11. Moreover, under mixed-dye conditions, involving MB, RhB, MO, RB5, and R6G organic materials, with dye concentrations ranging from 0.005 mM to 0.09 mM, an adsorption efficiency of above 50% can be reliably reached within 20 min. Such striking features can be interpreted as arising from a synergistic effect involving the hybrid composite based on a rGO matrix with negative charge and the dispersed SnFe 2 O 4 /ZnO nanoparticles with positive charge, additionally offering abundant adsorptive sites to allow reliable dye-adsorption kinetics., Competing Interests: There are no conflicts of interest to declare., (This journal is © The Royal Society of Chemistry.)

Life education , also known as life and death education , is an important subject in Taiwan. Life education is more than just the study of a person's development throughout the lifespan (e.g., cognitive development). Within the learning and sociocultural contexts of Taiwan, interestingly, the study of life and death education is concerned with the premise of the promotion and fulfillment of life qualities (e.g., a person's state of contentment), and the meaningful understanding of the nature of death. To facilitate appreciation and deep, meaningful understanding of the subject, and to emphasize its uniqueness, educators have included in their teaching the importance of Eastern-derived philosophical beliefs and religious faiths (e.g., Buddhism). For example, relatively significant in its emphasis, the teaching of this subject involves detailed examination of theoretical accounts of spiritual cultivation and its positive effect on a person's interpretation and enlightenment of life wisdom. The study of life education, or life and death education, we contend, is of significance as it provides life-related insights and theoretical understanding into the intricate nature of life and death. One notable aspect of the subject entails a person's acquired life wisdom, which in turn may shape his/her life practice on a daily basis (e.g., the proactive engagement in Buddhist meditation). Importantly, the study of life education may assist individuals with their coping of grief, and to approach death with a sense of peace, calmness, and dignity. In this analysis, coupled with Buddhist faith (or any other religious faith for that matter) and facilitated by spiritual cultivation (e.g., the belief in the notion of transcendence experience ), a person may overcome grief by believing in the possibility that there is some form of post-death experience and the presence of a loved one's spiritual being. Given this emphasis, we consider an important focus for discussion in this article: to explore the significance of life and death education and to determine how its 'positive nature' could potentially yield two comparable implications for development: (i) to engage in appropriate pedagogical practices that would encourage and promote the study of life and death education, and (ii) to advance innovative research inquiries, theoretical, methodological, and/or empirical, which could highlight the significance of life education for life purposes (e.g., the significance of Chinese ideograms, such as )., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflict of interest., (© 2021 The Author(s).)

Electrohydrodynamic atomization has been emerging as a powerful approach for respiratory treatment, including the generation and delivery of micro/nanoparticles as carriers for drugs and antigens. In this work, we present a new conceptual design in which two nozzles facilitate dual electrospray coexisting with ionic wind at chamfered tips by a direct current power source. Experimental results by a prototype have demonstrated the capability of simultaneously generating-and-delivering a stream of charged reduced particles. The concept can be beneficial to pulmonary nano-medicine delivery since the mist of nanoparticles is migrated without any restriction of either the collector or the assistance of external flow, but is pretty simple in designing and manufacturing devices.

The present study, using a non-experimental approach, investigated a theoretical concept of best practice, which we recently introduced - namely: a 'state of consonance' and a 'state of disconsonance' of best practice. Consonance of best practice posits that different levels of best practice (e.g., low level of best practice versus optimal level of best practice), as well as other comparable psychological constructs (e.g., motivation towards learning) would cluster or 'group' together. Disconsonance of best practice , in contrast, would indicate non-overlapping of contrasting levels of best practice (i.e., low level of best practice versus optimal level of best practice). Taiwanese undergraduates ( N = 831) from five private universities in Taipei City and New Taipei City, Taiwan took part in the study by responding to a suite of Likert-scale questionnaires (e.g., Best Practice Questionnaires, Motivation towards Learning Questionnaire), which took approximately 30-35 min to complete. Cluster analysis, commonly known as ClA , was used to analyze the data and seek theoretical understanding into the nature of the consonance of best practice. Results, overall, showed support for our proposition, resulting in four distinct profiles: 'a Balanced Profile,' 'an Intrinsic Motivation Profile,' 'a Current Best Practice + Interest Profile,' and 'a Current Best Practice + Motivation Profile.' This evidence, helping to advance further research development, has a number of practical implications for consideration.
