Recent advancements have exploited diffusion models for the synthesis of either LiDAR point clouds or camera image data in driving scenarios. Despite their success in modeling single-modality data marginal distribution, there is an under-exploration in the mutual reliance between different modalities to describe complex driving scenes. To fill in this gap, we propose a novel framework, X-DRIVE, to model the joint distribution of point clouds and multi-view images via a dual-branch latent diffusion model architecture. Considering the distinct geometrical spaces of the two modalities, X-DRIVE conditions the synthesis of each modality on the corresponding local regions from the other modality, ensuring better alignment and realism. To further handle the spatial ambiguity during denoising, we design the cross-modality condition module based on epipolar lines to adaptively learn the cross-modality local correspondence. Besides, X-DRIVE allows for controllable generation through multi-level input conditions, including text, bounding box, image, and point clouds. Extensive results demonstrate the high-fidelity synthetic results of X-DRIVE for both point clouds and multi-view images, adhering to input conditions while ensuring reliable cross-modality consistency. The Lagrangian formalism has attracted the attention of mathematicians and physicists for more than 250 years and has played significant roles in establishing modern theoretical physics. The history of the Lagrangian formalism in biology is much shorter, spanning only the last 50 years. In this paper, a broad review of the Lagrangian formalism in biology is presented in the context of both its historical and modern developments. Detailed descriptions of different methods to derive Lagrangians for five selected population dynamics models are given and the resulting Lagrangians are presented and discussed. The procedure to use the obtained Lagrangians to gain new biological insights into the evolution of the populations without solving the equations of motion is described and applied to the models. We present TALE, a novel training-free framework harnessing the generative capabilities of text-to-image diffusion models to address the cross-domain image composition task that focuses on flawlessly incorporating user-specified objects into a designated visual contexts regardless of domain disparity. Previous methods often involve either training auxiliary networks or finetuning diffusion models on customized datasets, which are expensive and may undermine the robust textual and visual priors of pre-trained diffusion models. Some recent works attempt to break the barrier by proposing training-free workarounds that rely on manipulating attention maps to tame the denoising process implicitly. However, composing via attention maps does not necessarily yield desired compositional outcomes. These approaches could only retain some semantic information and usually fall short in preserving identity characteristics of input objects or exhibit limited background-object style adaptation in generated images. In contrast, TALE is a novel method that operates directly on latent space to provide explicit and effective guidance for the composition process to resolve these problems. Specifically, we equip TALE with two mechanisms dubbed Adaptive Latent Manipulation and Energy-guided Latent Optimization. The former formulates noisy latents conducive to initiating and steering the composition process by directly leveraging background and foreground latents at corresponding timesteps, and the latter exploits designated energy functions to further optimize intermediate latents conforming to specific conditions that complement the former to generate desired final results. This paper proposes a joint design of probabilistic constellation shaping (PCS) and precoding to enhance the sum-rate performance of multi-user visible light communications (VLC) broadcast channels subject to signal amplitude constraint. In the proposed design, the transmission probabilities of bipolar $M$-pulse amplitude modulation ($M$-PAM) symbols for each user and the transmit precoding matrix are jointly optimized to improve the sum-rate performance. The joint design problem is shown to be a complex non-convex problem due to the non-convexity of the objective function. To tackle the problem, the firefly algorithm (FA), a nature-inspired heuristic optimization approach, is employed to solve a local optima to the original non-convex optimization problem. The FA-based approach, however, suffers from high computational complexity. Therefore, we propose a low-complexity design based on zero-forcing (ZF) precoding, which is solved using an alternating optimization (AO) approach. Simulation results reveal that the proposed joint design with PCS significantly improves the sum-rate performance compared to the conventional design with uniform signaling. Some insights into the optimal symbol distributions of the two joint design approaches are also provided.

Widespread air source heat pump (ASHP) adoption faces several challenges that on-site thermal energy storage (TES), particularly thermochemical salt hydrate TES, can mitigate. No techno-economic analyses for salt-hydrate-based TES in residential applications exist. We quantify the residential space heating value of four salt hydrate TES materials - MgSO4, MgCl2, K2CO3, and SrBr2 - coupled with ASHPs across 4,800 representative households in 12 U.S. cities by embedding salt-hydrate-specific Ragone plots into a techno-economic model of coupled ASHP-TES operations. In Detroit, salt hydrate TES is projected to reduce household annual electricity costs by up to $\$$241 (8$\%$). Cost savings from TES can differ by over an order of magnitude between households and salt hydrates. We identify the most promising salt in this study, SrBr2, due to its high energy density and low humidification parasitic load. Break-even capital costs of SrBr2-based TES range from $\$$13/kWh to $\$$17/kWh, making it the only salt hydrate studied to reach and exceed the U.S. Department of Energy's $\$$15/kWh TES cost target. Sensitivities highlight the importance of variable TES sizing and efficiency losses in the value of TES.

Homophily and social influence are two key concepts of social network analysis. Distinguishing between these phenomena is difficult, and approaches to disambiguate the two have been primarily limited to longitudinal data analyses. In this study, we provide sufficient conditions for valid estimation of social influence through cross-sectional data, leading to a novel homophily-adjusted social influence model which addresses the backdoor pathway of latent homophilic features. The oft-used network autocorrelation model (NAM) is the special case of our proposed model with no latent homophily, suggesting that the NAM is only valid when all homophilic attributes are observed. We conducted an extensive simulation study to evaluate the performance of our proposed homophily-adjusted model, comparing its results with those from the conventional NAM. Our findings shed light on the nuanced dynamics of social networks, presenting a valuable tool for researchers seeking to estimate the effects of social influence while accounting for homophily. Silicone is frequently used as a model system to investigate and tune wetting on soft materials. Silicone is biocompatible and shows excellent thermal, chemical, and UV stability. Moreover, the mechanical properties of the surface can be easily varied by several orders of magnitude in a controlled manner. Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) is a popular choice for coating applications such as lubrication, self-cleaning, and drag reduction, facilitated by low surface energy. Aiming to understand the underlying interactions and forces, motivated numerous and detailed investigations of the static and dynamic wetting behavior of drops on PDMS-based surfaces. Here, we recognize the three most prevalent PDMS surface variants, namely liquid-infused (SLIPS/LIS), elastomeric, and liquid-like (SOCAL) surfaces. To understand, optimize, and tune the wetting properties of these PDMS surfaces, we review and compare their similarities and differences by discussing (i) the chemical and molecular structure, and (ii) the static and dynamic wetting behavior. We also provide (iii) an overview of methods and techniques to characterize PDMS-based surfaces and their wetting behavior. The static and dynamic wetting ridge is given particular attention, as it dominates energy dissipation, adhesion, and friction of sliding drops and influences the durability of the surfaces. We also discuss special features such as cloaking and wetting-induced phase separation. Key challenges and opportunities of these three surface variants are outlined.

We present a new 3D point-based detector model, named Shift-SSD, for precise 3D object detection in autonomous driving. Traditional point-based 3D object detectors often employ architectures that rely on a progressive downsampling of points. While this method effectively reduces computational demands and increases receptive fields, it will compromise the preservation of crucial non-local information for accurate 3D object detection, especially in the complex driving scenarios. To address this, we introduce an intriguing Cross-Cluster Shifting operation to unleash the representation capacity of the point-based detector by efficiently modeling longer-range inter-dependency while including only a negligible overhead. Concretely, the Cross-Cluster Shifting operation enhances the conventional design by shifting partial channels from neighboring clusters, which enables richer interaction with non-local regions and thus enlarges the receptive field of clusters. We conduct extensive experiments on the KITTI, Waymo, and nuScenes datasets, and the results demonstrate the state-of-the-art performance of Shift-SSD in both detection accuracy and runtime efficiency., Comment: ICRA2024

Free-space optics (FSO)-based satellite communication systems have recently received considerable attention due to their enhanced capacity compared to their radio frequency (RF) counterparts. This paper analyzes the performance of physical layer security of space-to-ground intensity modulation/direct detection FSO satellite links under the effect of atmospheric loss, misalignment, cloud attenuation, and atmospheric turbulence-induced fading. Specifically, a wiretap channel consisting of a legitimate transmitter Alice (i.e., the satellite), a legitimate user Bob, and an eavesdropper Eve over turbulence channels modeled by the Fisher-Snedecor $\mathcal{F}$ distribution is considered. The secrecy performance in terms of the average secrecy capacity, secrecy outage probability, and strictly positive secrecy capacity are derived in closed-form. Simulation results reveal significant impacts of satellite altitude, zenith angle, and turbulence strength on the secrecy performance.

There has been an increasing interest in physical layer security (PLS), which, compared with conventional cryptography, offers a unique approach to guaranteeing information confidentiality against eavesdroppers. In this paper, we study a joint design of adaptive $M$-ary pulse amplitude modulation (PAM) and precoding, which aims to optimize wiretap visible-light channels' secrecy capacity and bit error rate (BER) performances. The proposed design is motivated by higher-order modulation, which results in better secrecy capacity at the expense of a higher BER. On the other hand, a proper precoding design, which can manipulate the received signal quality at the legitimate user and the eavesdropper, can also enhance secrecy performance and influence the BER. A reward function that considers the secrecy capacity and the BERs of the legitimate user's (Bob) and the eavesdropper's (Eve) channels is introduced and maximized. Due to the non-linearity and complexity of the reward function, it is challenging to solve the optical design using classical optimization techniques. Therefore, reinforcement learning-based designs using Q-learning and Deep Q-learning are proposed to maximize the reward function. Simulation results verify that compared with the baseline designs, the proposed joint designs achieve better reward values while maintaining the BER of Bob's channel (Eve's channel) well below (above) the pre-FEC (forward error correction) BER threshold.

This paper studies energy-efficient precoding designs for multi-user visible light communication (VLC) systems from the perspective of physical layer security where users' messages must be kept mutually confidential. For such systems, we first derive a lower bound on the achievable secrecy rate of each user. Next, the total power consumption for illumination and data transmission is thoroughly analyzed. We then tackle the problem of maximizing energy efficiency, given that each user's secrecy rate satisfies a certain threshold. The design problem is shown to be non-convex fractional programming, which renders finding the optimal solution computationally prohibitive. Our aim in this paper is, therefore, to find sub-optimal yet low complexity solutions. For this purpose, the traditional Dinkelbach algorithm is first employed to reformulate the original problem to a non-fractional parameterized one. Two different approaches based on the convex-concave procedure (CCCP) and Semidefinite Relaxation (SDR) are utilized to solve the non-convex parameterized problem. In addition, to further reduce the complexity, we investigate a design using the zero-forcing (ZF) technique. Numerical results are conducted to show the feasibility, convergence, and performance of the proposed algorithms depending on different parameters of the system.

This paper studies the design of energy-efficient artificial noise (AN) schemes in the context of physical layer security in visible light communications (VLC). Two different transmission schemes termed $\textit{selective AN-aided single-input single-output (SISO)}$ and $\textit{AN-aided multiple-input single-output (MISO)}$ are examined and compared in terms of secrecy energy efficiency (SEE). In the former, the closest LED luminaire to the legitimate user (Bob) is the information-bearing signal's transmitter. At the same time, the rest of the luminaries act as jammers transmitting AN to degrade the channels of eavesdroppers (Eves). In the latter, the information-bearing signal and AN are combined and transmitted by all luminaries. When Eves' CSI is unknown, an indirect design to improve the SEE is formulated by maximizing Bob's channel's energy efficiency. A low-complexity design based on the zero-forcing criterion is also proposed. In the case of known Eves' CSI, we study the design that maximizes the minimum SEE among those corresponding to all eavesdroppers. At their respective optimal SEEs, simulation results reveal that when Eves' CSI is unknown, the selective AN-aided SISO transmission can archive twice better SEE as the AN-aided MISO does. In contrast, when Eves' CSI is known, the AN-aided MISO outperforms by 30%.

Organic molecular crystals encompass a vast range of materials from pharmaceuticals to organic optoelectronics and proteins to waxes in biological and industrial settings. Crystal defects from grain boundaries to dislocations are known to play key roles in mechanisms of growth and also in the functional properties of molecular crystals. In contrast to the precise analysis of individual defects in metals, ceramics, and inorganic semiconductors enabled by electron microscopy, significantly greater ambiguity remains in the experimental determination of individual dislocation character and slip systems in molecular materials. In large part, nanoscale dislocation analysis in molecular crystals has been hindered by the severely constrained electron exposures required to avoid irreversibly degrading these crystals. Here, we present a low-dose, single-exposure approach enabling nanometre-resolved analysis of individual extended dislocations in molecular crystals. We establish an analogy between the Fokker-Planck equation describing evolutionary landscape dynamics and the Schr\"{o}dinger equation which characterizes quantum mechanical particles, showing how a population with multiple genetic traits evolves analogously to a wavefunction under a multi-dimensional energy potential in imaginary time. Furthermore, we discover within this analogy that the stationary population distribution on the landscape corresponds exactly to the ground-state wavefunction. This mathematical equivalence grants entry to a wide range of analytical tools developed by the quantum mechanics community, such as the Rayleigh-Ritz variational method and the Rayleigh-Schr\"{o}dinger perturbation theory, allowing us to not only make reasonable quantitative assessments but also explore fundamental biological inquiries. We demonstrate the effectiveness of these tools by estimating the population success on landscapes where precise answers are elusive, and unveiling the ecological consequences of stress-induced mutagenesis -- a prevalent evolutionary mechanism in pathogenic and neoplastic systems. We show that, even in a unchanging environment, a sharp mutational burst resulting from stress can always be advantageous, while a gradual increase only enhances population size when the number of relevant evolving traits is limited. Our interdisciplinary approach offers novel insights, opening up new avenues for deeper understanding and predictive capability regarding the complex dynamics of evolving populations.
