Abstract

Companies today are racing to leverage the latest digital technologies, such as artificial intelligence, blockchain, and cloud computing. However, many companies report that their strategies did not achieve the anticipated business results. This study is the first to apply state of the art NLP models on unstructured data to understand the different clusters of digital strategy patterns that companies are Adopting. We achieve this by analyzing earnings calls from Fortune Global 500 companies between 2015 and 2019. We use Transformer based architecture for text classification which show a better understanding of the conversation context. We then investigate digital strategy patterns by applying clustering analysis. Our findings suggest that Fortune 500 companies use four distinct strategies which are product led, customer experience led, service led, and efficiency led. 11. Roadmapping and Digital Tools: A Systematic Literature Review

Abstract

Roadmapping emerged in technology-based businesses to foster the alignment between strategic objectives and new products and technologies. Along with roadmapping, ICT tools, software, and data processing techniques have been used to make it more effective and efficient. Despite the advance of digital technologies, there needs to be more clarity regarding their usage and impacts on roadmapping implementation. Thus, this article aims to perform a systematic literature review focusing on these digital tools supporting the roadmapping process. It combines bibliometric and content analysis to address a sample of 61 articles. The results indicate that text mining has been widely explored in the roadmapping preparation stage, while digital tools focused on collaborative roadmapping activities have gained less prominence. This work's main contributions are mapping the roadmapping digital tools and their interaction with each activity in the process. Besides, some research topics are highlighted as a future agenda for roadmapping assisted by digital tools.

Abstract

Roadmapping as a method for integrated strategic planning of products, technologies, processes, services, or business models is in the focus of the Roadmapping Field Study. Since the contents and areas of application of roadmaps vary greatly in practice, we set ourselves the goal for the Roadmapping Field Study of finding out how roadmapping is applied in the real world. The study was first conducted in 2015. The current study is an online survey with 190 participants. We asked for the organizational areas of application and the content, the organizational integration, the use of information sources, methods, and tools as well as for the challenges and best practices. In addition to the results of the survey, differences to the 2015 study as well as correlations are discussed. The results include, for example, that roadmaps are predominantly used for products in strategic planning and rather rarely for production planning.

Abstract

Roadmapping practice and research have evolved together over the past three decades, in response to the changing application context, such as the emergence of cutting-edge technologies and rapid social changes. The widespread adoption and adaptation of (technology) roadmapping has been enabled by its simplicity, flexibility and usefulness, reflected in a surge in the volume of literature on roadmapping. A limited number of literature reviews have been conducted, mostly using qualitative and micro-oriented approaches. This paper, however, deploys a quantitative and macro-oriented approach to provide an objective and comprehensive view of the literature by following DNCT procedures, consisting of citation network and text mining analysis. This paper identifies contributing authors, journals and countries, sets out key research themes, and highlights significant developments in roadmapping practice and theory, with reference to previous studies. Results have proven that roadmapping has become an established research topic. 10 clusters of research streams are detected: General Concept & Scenario; Technology Management Tool; Implementation in National and Industrial Levels; Fundamental Research; Implementation in Organisational Level; Innovation Planning; Strategic Planning Synchronisation; Strategic Foresight; Industrial Emergence; and Design & Visualisation. Roadmapping is an established visual mapping method used widely in a variety of organizations. It navigates technology and strategic planning in a structured manner for improved strategy development and decision-making. However, roadmapping implementation can be challenging particularly when initiating in corporate organizations due to the broad range of stakeholder involvement. This paper examines the background history and lessons learned from IHI Corporation, a leading Japanese heavy industry manufacturer, to provide insights regarding how roadmapping implementation can be initiated effectively in corporate settings. Using the roadmapping maturity model for analysis and discussion, this paper contributes to both industrial practice and academic understanding of roadmapping implementation maturity. Overview: This paper explores industrial cases of remote digital workshop-based roadmapping and presents lessons learned and insights that may be beneficial to organizations interested in digital roadmapping. We created a framework comprising three core elements—digitalization context, digital approach, and performance—to collect data and analyze seven industrial cases. The study revealed changes needed to ensure effective remote digital roadmapping—changes related to process and workshop design, facilitators' effort and skill, participants' accessibility, roadmapping agility, and roadmap quality.
