We present radiative transfer modelling of thermal emission from the nightside of Venus in two ‘spectral window’ regions at 1.51 and 1.55 μm. The first discovery of these windows, reported by Erard et al. [Erard, S., Drossart, P., Piccioni, G., 2009. J. Geophys. Res. Planets 114, doi:10.1029/2008JE003116. E00B27], was achieved using a principal component analysis of data from the VIRTIS instrument on Venus Express. These windows are spectrally narrow, with a full-width at half-maximum of ∼20 nm, and less bright than the well-known 1.7 and 2.3 μm spectral windows by two orders of magnitude. In this note we present the first radiative transfer analysis of these windows. We conclude that the radiation in these windows originates at an altitude of 20–35 km. As is the case for the other infrared window regions, the brightness of the windows is affected primarily by the optical depth of the overlying clouds; in addition, the 1.51 μm radiance shows a very weak sensitivity to water vapour abundance.

We present an analysis of Voyager-1-IRIS and Cassini-CIRS spectra of Jupiter's high latitudes acquired during the spacecrafts' respective flybys in November 1979 and January 2001. We performed a forward-model analysis in order to derive the abundances of ethylene (C2H4), methylacetylene (CH3C2H), diacetylene (C4H2) and benzene (C6H6) in Jupiter's northern and southern auroral regions. We also compared these abundances to: 1) lower-latitude abundances predicted by the Moses et al. (2005) ‘Model A’ photochemical model, henceforth ‘Moses 2005A’, and 2) abundances derived at non-auroral longitudes in the same latitude band. This paper serves as an extension of Sinclair et al. (2017b) , where we retrieved the vertical profiles of temperature, C2H2 and C2H6 from similar datasets. We find that an enrichment of C2H4, CH3C2H and C6H6 with respect to lower-latitude abundances is required to fit the spectra of Jupiter's northern and southern auroral regions. For example, for CIRS 0.5 cm−1 spectra of Jupiter's southern auroral region, scale factor enrichments of 6.40−1.15+1.30 and 9.60−3.67+3.98 are required with respect to the Moses 2005A vertical profiles of C2H4 and C6H6, respectively, in order to fit the spectral emission features of these species at ∼950 and ∼674 cm−1. Similarly, in order to fit the CIRS 2.5 cm−1 spectra of Jupiter's northern auroral region, scale factor enrichments of 1.60−0.21+0.37, 3.40−1.69+1.89 and 15.00−4.02+4.01 with respect to the Moses 2005A vertical profiles of C2H4, CH3C2H and C6H6 were required, respectively. Outside of Jupiter's auroral region in the same latitude bands, only upper-limit abundances of C2H4, CH3C2H and C6H6 could be determined due to the limited sensitivity of the measurements, the weaker emission features combined with cooler stratospheric temperatures (and therefore decreased thermal emission) of these regions. Nevertheless, for a subset of the observations, derived abundances of C2H4 and C6H6 in Jupiter's auroral regions were higher (by 1 σ) with respect to upper-limit abundances derived outside the auroral region in the same latitude band. This is suggestive that the influx of energetic ions and electrons from the Jovian magnetosphere and external solar-wind environment into the neutral atmosphere in Jupiter's auroral regions drives enhanced ion-related chemistry, as has also been inferred from Cassini observations of Saturn's high latitudes ( Fletcher et al., 2018 ; Guerlet et al., 2015 ; Koskinen et al., 2016 ). We were not able to constrain the abundance of C4H2 in either Jupiter's auroral regions or non-auroral regions due to its lower (predicted) abundance and weaker emission feature. Thus, only upper-limit abundances were derived in both locations. From CIRS 2.5 cm−1 spectra, the upper limit abundance of C4H2 corresponds to a scale factor enhancement of 45.6 and 23.8 with respect to the Moses 2005A vertical profile in Jupiter's non-auroral and auroral regions.

Here we search for hydrogen chloride (HCl) in Neptune’s stratosphere using observations of the 1876.22 GHz J=3–2 transition from the Heterodyne Instrument for the Far-Infrared (HIFI) on Herschel. Observations comprise a 7.2 hr disc-averaged integration, originally designed to investigate stratospheric methane. Significant HCl emission was not detected. Instead, we determine upper limits using step-type abundance profiles, defined by zero deep abundance and uniform volume mixing ratio for pressures less than a transition pressure (assumed to be 0.1 or 1 mbar). These profiles are a reasonable first-order approximation for an externally sourced species; at higher pressures HCl is expected to be removed by aerosol scavenging and reactions with ammonia. The 3 σ upper limits are 0.70 parts per billion (ppb) for a 0.1 mbar transition pressure and 0.076 ppb for a 1 mbar transition pressure. These upper limits are the most stringent to date and are consistent with current estimates of interplanetary dust particle flux and the hypothesis that Neptune experienced a large comet impact in the past 1000 years.

Enhanced mid-infrared emission from CH4 and other stratospheric hydrocarbons has been observed coincident with Jupiter’s ultraviolet auroral emission1–3. This suggests that auroral processes and the neutral stratosphere of Jupiter are coupled; however, the exact nature of this coupling is unknown. Here we present a time series of Subaru-COMICS images of Jupiter measured at a wavelength of 7.80 μm on 11–14 January, 4–5 February and 17–20 May 2017. These data show that both the morphology and magnitude of the auroral CH4 emission vary on daily timescales in relation to external solar-wind conditions. The southern auroral CH4 emission increased in brightness temperature by about 3.8 K between 15:50 ut, 11 January and 12:57 ut, 12 January, during a predicted solar-wind compression. During the same compression, the northern auroral emission exhibited a duskside brightening, which mimics the morphology observed in the ultraviolet auroral emission during periods of enhanced solar-wind pressure4,5. These results suggest that changes in external solar-wind conditions perturb the Jovian magnetosphere in such a way that energetic particles are accelerated into the planet’s atmosphere, deposit their energy as deep as the neutral stratosphere, and modify the thermal structure, the abundance of CH4 or the population of energy states of CH4. We also find that the northern and southern auroral CH4 emission evolved independently between the January, February and May images, as has been observed at X-ray wavelengths over shorter timescales6 and at mid-infrared wavelengths over longer timescales7. An intensification of the 7.8-µm methane emission at Jupiter’s poles is observed in coincidence with the arrival of a solar-wind compression in January 2017, highlighting the strong coupling between Jupiter’s magnetosphere and its neutral stratosphere.

Since its first measurement 20 years ago by the Infrared Space Observatory (ISO), the water (H2O) mole fraction in Titan's stratosphere remains uncertain due to large differences between the determinations from available measurements. More particularly, the recent measurements made from the Herschel observatory (PACS and HIFI) estimated the H2O mole fraction to be 0.023 ppb at 12.1 mbar. A mixing ratio of 0.14 ppb at 10.7 mbar was, however, retrieved from nadir spatially-resolved observations of Cassini/CIRS. At the same pressure level (10.7 mbar), this makes a difference of a factor of 5.5 between PACS and CIRS measurements, and this has notably prevented current models from fully constraining the oxygen flux flowing into Titan's atmosphere. In this work, we try to understand the differences between the H2O mole fractions estimated from Herschel/PACS and Cassini/CIRS observations. The strategy for this is to 1) analyse recent disc-averaged observations of CIRS to investigate if the observation geometry could explain the previous observed differences, and 2) (re)analyse the three types of observation with the same retrieval scheme to assess if previous differences in retrieval codes/methodology could be responsible for the previous discrepancies. With this analysis, we show that using the same retrieval method better reconcile the previous measurements of these instruments. However, the addition of the disc-averaged CIRS observations, instead of confirming the consistency between the different datasets, reveals discrepancies between one of the CIRS disc-averaged set of observations and PACS measurements. This raises new questions regarding the possibility of latitudinal variations of H2O, which could be triggered by seasonal changes of the meridional circulation. As it has already been shown for nitriles and hydrocarbons, this circulation could potentially impact the latitudinal distribution of H2O through the subsidence or upwelling of air rich in H2O. The possible influence of spatial/time variations of the OH/H2O input flux in Titan's atmosphere is also discussed. The analysis of more observations will be needed in future work to address the questions arising from this work and to improve the understanding of the sources of H2O in Titan's atmosphere.

The martian atmosphere is host to many trace gases including water (H 2 O) and its isotopologues, methane (CH 4 ) and potentially sulphur dioxide (SO 2 ), nitrous oxide (N 2 O) and further organic compounds, which would serve as indirect tracers of geological, chemical and biological processes on Mars. With exception of the recent detection of CH 4 by Curiosity, previous detections of these species have been unsuccessful or considered tentative due to the low concentrations of these species in the atmosphere (∼10 −9 partial pressures), limited spectral resolving power and/or signal-to-noise and the challenge of discriminating between telluric and martian features when observing from the Earth. In this study, we present radiative transfer simulations of an alternative method for detection of trace gas species – the gas correlation radiometry method. Two potential observing scenarios were explored where a gas correlation filter radiometer (GCFR) instrument: (1) performs nadir and/or limb sounding of the martian atmosphere in the thermal infrared (200–2000 cm −1 from an orbiting spacecraft or (2) performs solar occultation measurements in the near-infrared (2000–5000 cm −1 ) from a lander on the martian surface. In both scenarios, simulations of a narrowband filter radiometer (without gas correlation) were also generated to serve as a comparison. From a spacecraft, we find that a gas correlation filter radiometer, in comparison to a filter radiometer (FR), offers a greater discrimination between temperature and dust, a greater discrimination between H 2 O and HDO, and would allow detection of N 2 O and CH 3 OH at concentrations of ∼10 ppbv and ∼2 ppbv, respectively, which are lower than previously-derived upper limits. However, the lowest retrievable concentration of SO 2 (approximately 2 ppbv) is comparable with previous upper limits and CH 4 is only detectable at concentrations of approximately 10 ppbv, which is an order of magnitude higher than the concentration recently measured by Curiosity. From a lander in low dust conditions, both a filter radiometer and gas correlation filter radiometer would provide measurement of H 2 O and HDO, which allows the D/H ratio in H 2 O to be determined. Detection of N 2 O, CH 4 , SO 2 , C 2 H 2 , C 2 H 6 at concentrations lower than previously-derived upper limits would be possible using a gas correlation filer radiometer in low dust conditions. However, either radiometer would be unable to detect these trace gases in high dust conditions, with the exception of H 2 O.

Jupiter's tropospheric composition and cloud structure are studied using Cassini VIMS 4.5-5.1 {\mu}m thermal emission spectra from the 2000-2001 flyby. We make use of both nadir and limb darkening observations on the planet's nightside, and compare these with dayside observations. Although there is significant spatial variability in the 5-{\mu}m brightness temperatures, the shape of the spectra remain very similar across the planet, suggesting the presence of a spectrally-flat, spatially inhomogeneous cloud deck. We find that a simple cloud model consisting of a single, compact cloud is able to reproduce both nightside and dayside spectra, subject to the following constraints: (i) the cloud base is located at pressures of 1.2 bar or lower; (ii) the cloud particles are highly scattering; (iii) the cloud is sufficiently spectrally flat. Using this cloud model, we search for global variability in the cloud opacity and the phosphine deep volume mixing ratio. We find that the vast majority of the 5-{\mu}m inhomogeneity can be accounted for by variations in the thickness of the cloud decks, with huge differences between the cloudy zones and the relatively cloud-free belts. The relatively low spectral resolution of VIMS limits reliable retrievals of gaseous species, but some evidence is found for an enhancement in the abundance of phosphine at high latitudes., Comment: 16 pages, 17 figures, manuscript accepted for publication in Icarus

The results for the design study of the Long Wave Infrared Module (LWIR), a goal spectroscopic channel for the EChO ESA medium class candidate mission, are presented. The requirements for the LWIR module were to provide coverage of the 11–16 μm spectral range at a moderate resolving power of at least R = 30, whilst minimising noise contributions above photon due to the thermal background of the EChO instrument and telescope, and astrophysical sources such as the zodiacal light. The study output module design is a KRS-6 prism spectrograph with aluminium mirror beam expander and coated germanium lenses for the final focusing elements. Thermal background considerations led to enclosing the beam in a baffle cooled to approximately 25–29 K. To minimise diffuse astrophysical background contributions due to the zodiacal light, anamorphic designs were considered in addition to the elliptical input beam provided by the EChO telescope. The Texas Echelon cross Echelle Spectrograph (TEXES), mounted on NASA’s Infrared Telescope Facility (IRTF), was used to map mid-infrared ammonia absorption features on both Jupiter and Saturn in February 2013. Ammonia is the principle reservoir of nitrogen on the giant planets, and the ratio of isotopologues ( 15 N/ 14 N) can reveal insights into the molecular carrier (e.g., as N 2 or NH 3 ) of nitrogen to the forming protoplanets, and hence the source reservoirs from which these worlds accreted. We targeted two spectral intervals (900 and 960 cm −1 ) that were relatively clear of terrestrial atmospheric contamination and contained close features of 14 NH 3 and 15 NH 3 , allowing us to derive the ratio from a single spectrum without ambiguity due to radiometric calibration (the primary source of uncertainty in this study). We present the first ground-based determination of Jupiter’s 15 N/ 14 N ratio (in the range from 1.4 × 10 - 3 to 2.5 × 10 - 3 ), which is consistent with both previous space-based studies and with the primordial value of the protosolar nebula. On Saturn, we present the first upper limit on the 15 N/ 14 N ratio of no larger than 2.0 × 10 - 3 for the 900-cm −1 channel and a less stringent requirement that the ratio be no larger than 2.8 × 10 - 3 for the 960-cm −1 channel ( 1 σ confidence). Specifically, the data rule out strong 15 N-enrichments such as those observed in Titan’s atmosphere and in cometary nitrogen compounds. To the extent possible with ground-based radiometric uncertainties, the saturnian and jovian 15 N/ 14 N ratios appear indistinguishable, implying that 15 N-enriched ammonia ices could not have been a substantial contributor to the bulk nitrogen inventory of either planet. This result favours accretion of primordial N 2 on both planets, either in the gas phase from the solar nebula, or as ices formed at very low temperatures. Finally, spatially-resolved TEXES observations are used to derive zonal contrasts in tropospheric temperatures, phosphine and 14 NH 3 on both planets, allowing us to relate thermal conditions and chemical compositions to phenomena observed at visible wavelengths in 2013 (e.g., Jupiter’s faint equatorial red colouration event and wave activity in the equatorial belts, plus the remnant warm band on Saturn following the 2010–11 springtime storm).

Spatially resolved maps of Jupiter's far-infrared 17-37 $\mu$m hydrogen-helium collision-induced spectrum were acquired by the FORCAST instrument on the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA) in May 2014. Spectral scans in two grisms covered the broad S(0) and S(1) absorption lines, in addition to contextual imaging in eight broad-band filters (5-37 $\mu$m) with spatial resolutions of 2-4". The spectra were inverted to map the zonal-mean temperature and para-H$_2$ distribution ($f_p$, the fraction of the para spin isomer with respect to the ortho spin isomer) in Jupiter's upper troposphere (the 100-700 mbar range). We compared these to a reanalysis of Voyager-1 and -2 IRIS spectra covering the same spectral range. Para-H$_2$ increases from equator to pole, with low-$f_p$ air at the equator representing sub-equilibrium conditions (i.e., less para-H$_2$ than expected from thermal equilibration), and high-$f_p$ air and possible super-equilibrium at higher latitudes. In particular, we confirm the continued presence of a region of high-$f_p$ air at high northern latitudes discovered by Voyager/IRIS, and an asymmetry with generally higher $f_p$ in the north than in the south. We note that existing collision-induced absorption databases lack opacity from (H$_2$)$_2$ dimers, leading to under-prediction of the absorption near the S(0) and S(1) peaks. There appears to be no spatial correlation between para-H$_2$ and tropospheric ammonia, phosphine and cloud opacity derived from Voyager/IRIS at mid-infrared wavelengths (7-15 $\mu$m). We note, however, that para-H$_2$ tracks the similar latitudinal distribution of aerosols within Jupiter's upper tropospheric and stratospheric hazes observed in reflected sunlight, suggesting that catalysis of hydrogen equilibration within the hazes (and not the main clouds) may govern the equator-to-pole gradient. Since the 1970s, it has been predicted that both CO2 and H2O clouds can form in the Martian atmosphere, and many remote-sounding instruments have directly observed layers of extinction asserted to be clouds composed of either CO2 or H2O ice on Mars. The Mars Climate Sounder, onboard the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO/MCS), entered orbit around Mars in 2006, and has been providing near-continuous coverage of the full planet since, at wavelengths from visible through to the mid-infrared, primarily in limb-viewing geometry, making it a suitable candidate to study the parameters of these clouds. In this work, the multiple scattering radiative-transfer tool NemesisMCS has been used to create a large dataset of simulations of CO2 and H2O clouds on Mars as would be measured by MRO/MCS, using a range of atmospheric conditions as well as cloud parameters derived from literature suitable for upper atmospheric clouds, and building specifically on the work of Sefton-Nash et al. (2013). This ensemble of simulations has been used to characterise the spectral signature of plausible CO2 and H2O clouds, as well as to assess the suitability of MRO/MCS to observe, to differentiate between, and to derive properties of such clouds. It has been found, given the noise levels expected for MRO/MCS and the range of atmospheric and cloud parameters sampled in this study, that radiance signals introduced by upper atmospheric clouds having nadir optical depths greater than about 10−5 should be distinguishable, with S/N≥1. This corresponds to specific concentrations greater than about 105 particles/g, particle radii greater than around View the MathML source, and cloud depths greater than about 2 km. MRO/MCS measurements should be able to be used with confidence to differentiate between upper atmospheric cloud and dust in the lower atmosphere, and clear conditions, with high success (≈100%). Lower reliability classification is accomplished for CO2 clouds, with only 60% being correctly identified as CO2, and the remainder classified instead as H2O cloud, in the case of optical depths in the expected range for upper atmospheric cloudswhich are detectable by MRO/MCS, although this result is highly dependent upon the sampled selection of optically thin and thick clouds and the atmospheric model employed. Although almost all the H2O clouds are correctly identified, the fact that such a large proportion of CO2 clouds are misclassified as H2O clouds shows that the spectral information alone from MRO/MCS is insufficient to differentiate between CO2 and H2O clouds when optically thin—but detectable—clouds are included in the analysis. Using a simple look-up table (LUT) scheme and simulated data, retrieval of properties of upper atmospheric clouds of sufficient opacity is possible, with preliminary estimates indicating that H2O cloud and dust parameters can be correctly reproduced between 48% and 100% of the time, and between 18% and 92% of the time for CO2 cloud test cases, although it must be noted that these values must be taken as a qualitative measure which does not capture the full range of atmospheric and cloud conditions on Mars which would be present in real MRO/MCS data. Furthermore, because of the optical properties of H2O and CO2, on a like-with-like selection, the H2O clouds always produce greater perturbations in radiance, thus biasing results to a higher success rate for H2O cloud retrievals. Application of the method to MRO/MCS data with a full-optimal estimation retrieval tool such as NemesisMCS will be the topic of a future study.

International audience; An analysis of near-infrared emissions on the nightside of Venus observed by the Visible and Infrared Thermal Imaging Spectrometer (VIRTIS) instrument on board Venus Express reveals anomalous cloud particles in the polar regions of Venus. These anomalous particles are found within the centers of polar vortices at both poles and are either larger or different in composition from those elsewhere in the planet. We find no persistent latitudinal variation in cloud properties at low to midlatitudes, nor do we find asymmetry between the southern and northern hemispheres. These findings arise from analysis of the relative brightness of 1.74 and 2.30 mum infrared radiation thermally emitted from the deep atmosphere of Venus. Larger cloud particles cause relatively more attenuation at 2.30 mum than at 1.74 mum, so we use a ``size parameter,'' m = (I 1.74mum)/(I 2.30mum)0.53, as a proxy for particle size. This methodology follows that of Carlson et al. (1993), supported by new radiative transfer modeling.

The upper jovian atmosphere is particularly transparent at wavelengths near 5 μ m . Levels well below the cloud layers, which are situated between 0.5 and 2 bar, can be sounded. Large spatial variations of the brightness are observed, which are directly related to the opacity of the overlying cloud layer. Yet, the nature of the 5- μ m absorber in the jovian atmosphere has been subject of much debate. The cloud layer has been modelled many times as a thin, non-scattering layer, the opacity adjusted to fit the overall radiance level. This has proven to work well for individual spectra. Data from the Galileo near infrared mapping spectrometer (NIMS), covering the 0.7– 5.2 μ m range, include a number of observations of the same areas, separated by several hours, at different emission angles. Should the 5 μ m absorber be a thin absorbing layer then, apart from a change in radiance level, the overall shape of the 5- μ m spectrum is also expected to change significantly with emission angle. However, comparison of the 5- μ m spectra measured by NIMS of the same location but at different viewing angles reveals that while the overall radiance level decreases with increasing emission angle, the shape of the spectra remain unchanged. In this paper we present atmospheric models that include scattering to explain this effect. We show that the 5- μ m absorbing cloud particles must be significantly scattering ( ω = 0.9 ± 0.05 ) in order to explain these observations, and find that the base of the cloud layer must reside at pressures less than 2 bar. Furthermore, we show that the scattering within this cloud has important consequences on the retrieval of gas abundances from spectra in the 5- μ m region.

The Composite InfraRed Spectrometer (CIRS) on-board the Cassini spacecraft has currently returned around three years worth of data from Saturn's largest moon Titan. One of the unique aspects of CIRS is to take high spatial resolution spectra of the limb of Titan, with sub-scale height (20-40 km) resolutions. This is made possible by the small field-of-view (FOV) of the mid-IR detectors. However, many limb spectra have moderate to large sized FOVs, which introduces bias into retrieved profiles of temperature and abundance unless the finite FOV size is taken into account. The bias can be reduced by calculating a FOV-averaged spectrum comprising a weighted sum of a small number of spectra with infinitesimal FOVs across the FOV. Here we introduce a scheme for incorporating FOV averaging into radiative transfer calculations of CIRS spectra and quantify the errors as a function of number of FOV averaging points, FOV size, tangent altitude, and wavenumber. The optimum number of FOV averaging points for a given observation can then be found by matching the calculated FOV averaging error with the measurement error. This allows for accurate analysis of a vast amount of Cassini-CIRS data. © 2007 Springer Science+Business Media B.V.

We use a six-year data set (2004-2010) of mid-infrared spectra measured by Cassini's Composite InfraRed Spectrometer to search for seasonal variations in Titan's atmospheric temperature and composition. During most of Cassini's mission Titan's northern hemisphere has been in winter, with an intense stratospheric polar vortex highly enriched in trace gases, and a single south-to-north circulation cell. Following northern spring equinox in mid-2009, dramatic changes in atmospheric temperature and composition were expected, but until now the temporal coverage of polar latitudes has been too sparse to discern trends. Here, we show that during equinox and post-equinox periods, abundances of trace gases at both poles have begun to increase.We propose that increases in north polar trace gases are due to a seasonal reduction in gas depletion by horizontal mixing across the vortex boundary. A simultaneous south polar abundance increase suggests that Titan is now entering, or is about to enter, a transitional circulation regime with two branches, rather than the single branch circulation pattern previously observed. © 2010. International audience; Mid- and far-infrared spectra from the Composite InfraRed Spectrometer (CIRS) have been used to determine volume mixing ratios of nitriles in Titan's atmosphere. HCN, HC 3N, C 2H 2, and temperature were derived from 2.5 cm -1 spectral resolution mid-IR mapping sequences taken during three flybys, which provide almost complete global coverage of Titan for latitudes south of 60° N. Three 0.5 cm -1 spectral resolution far-IR observations were used to retrieve C 2N 2 and act as a check on the mid-IR results for HCN. Contribution functions peak at around 0.5-5 mbar for temperature and 0.1-10 mbar for the chemical species, well into the stratosphere. The retrieved mixing ratios of HCN, HC 3N, and C 2N 2 show a marked increase in abundance towards the north, whereas C 2H 2 remains relatively constant. Variations with longitude were much smaller and are consistent with high zonal wind speeds. For 90°-20° S the retrieved HCN abundance is fairly constant with a volume mixing ratio of around 1 × 10 -7 at 3 mbar. More northerly latitudes indicate a steady increase, reaching around 4 × 10 -7 at 60° N, where the data coverage stops. This variation is consistent with previous measurements and suggests subsidence over the northern (winter) pole at approximately 2 × 10 -4 m s -1. HC 3N displays a very sharp increase towards the north pole, where it has a mixing ratio of around 4 × 10 -8 at 60° N at the 0.1-mbar level. The difference in gradient for the HCN and HC 3N latitude variations can be explained by HC 3N's much shorter photochemical lifetime, which prevents it from mixing with air at lower latitude. It is also consistent with a polar vortex which inhibits mixing of volatile rich air inside the vortex with that at lower latitudes. Only one observation was far enough north to detect significant amounts of C 2N 2, giving a value of around 9 × 10 -10 at 50° N at the 3-mbar level.

We present a correlated- k -based model for generating synthetic spectra in the near-infrared window regions, from 1.0 to 2.5 μm, emitted from the deep atmosphere of Venus on the nightside. This approach is applicable for use with any near-infrared instrument, ground-based and space-borne, for analysis of the thermal emissions in this spectral range. We also approach this work with the view of using the model, in conjunction with a retrieval algorithm, to retrieve minor species from the Venus Express/VIRTIS instrument. An existing radiative-transfer model was adapted for Venusian conditions to deal with the prevailing high pressures and temperatures and other conditions. A comprehensive four-modal cloud structure model based on Pollack et al. [Near-infrared light from venus’ nightside: a spectroscopic analysis. Icarus 1993;103:1–42], using refractive indices for a 75% H 2 SO 4 25% H 2 O mixture from Palmer and Williams [Optical constants of sulfuric acid; application to the clouds of Venus? Appl Opt 1975;14(1):208–19], was also implemented. We then utilized a Mie scattering algorithm to account for the multiple scattering effect between cloud and haze layers that occur in the Venusian atmosphere. The correlated- k model is shown to produce good agreement with ground-based spectra of Venus in the near infrared, and to match the output from a line-by-line radiative-transfer model to better than 10%.

We developed a line-by-line heating and cooling rate model for the stratosphere of Jupiter, based on two complete sets of global maps of temperature, C_(2)H_2 and C_(2)H_6, retrieved from the Cassini and Voyager observations in the latitude and vertical plane, with a careful error analysis. The non-LTE effect is found unimportant on the thermal cooling rate below the 0.01 mbar pressure level. The most important coolants are molecular hydrogen between 10 and 100 mbar, and hydrocarbons, including ethane (C_(2)H_6), acetylene (C_(2)H_2) and methane (CH_4), in the region above. The two-dimensional cooling rate maps are influenced primarily by the temperature structure, and also by the meridional distributions of C_(2)H_2 and C_(2)H_6. The temperature anomalies at the 1 mbar pressure level in the Cassini data and the strong C_(2)H_6 latitudinal contrast in the Voyager epoch are the two most prominent features influencing the cooling rate patterns, with the effect from the ‘quasi-quadrennial oscillation (QQO)’ thermal structures at ~20 mbar. The globally averaged CH4 heating and cooling rates are not balanced, clearly in the lower stratosphere under 10 mbar, and possibly in the upper stratosphere above the 1 mbar pressure level. Possible heating sources from the gravity wave breaking and aerosols are discussed. The radiative relaxation timescale in the lower stratosphere implies that the temperature profile might not be purely radiatively controlled.

Remote sensing observations meet some limitations when used to study the bulk atmospheric composition of the giant planets of our solar system. A remarkable example of the superiority of in situ probe measurements is illustrated by the exploration of Jupiter, where key measurements such as the determination of the noble gases abundances and the precise measurement of the helium mixing ratio have only been made available through in situ measurements by the Galileo probe. This paper describes the main scientific goals to be addressed by the future in situ exploration of Saturn placing the Galileo probe exploration of Jupiter in a broader context and before the future probe exploration of the more remote ice giants. In situ exploration of Saturn's atmosphere addresses two broad themes that are discussed throughout this paper: first, the formation history of our solar system and second, the processes at play in planetary atmospheres. In this context, we detail the reasons why measurements of Saturn's bulk elemental and isotopic composition would place important constraints on the volatile reservoirs in the protosolar nebula. We also show that the in situ measurement of CO (or any other disequilibrium species that is depleted by reaction with water) in Saturn's upper troposphere would constrain its bulk O/H ratio. We highlight the key measurements required to distinguish competing theories to shed light on giant planet formation as a common process in planetary systems with potential applications to most extrasolar systems. In situ measurements of Saturn's stratospheric and tropospheric dynamics, chemistry and cloud-forming processes will provide access to phenomena unreachable to remote sensing studies. International audience; We present here methods developed for the retrieval of air temperature profiles in the Venusian mesosphere from the absolute radiances measured by the Visual and Infrared Thermal Imaging Spectrometer (VIRTIS) on board the Venus Express satellite. The infrared M channel of the instrument acquires multispectral images between 1000 and 5000 nm. In nighttime measurements, radiance in the range 3800-5000 nm is dominated by the thermal emission and absorption by the clouds and carbon dioxide. Since the latter is the main atmospheric component, it is possible to exploit the strong variability of its opacity in this spectral range, as resolved by the instrument, to reconstruct the vertical air temperature profile as a function of pressure. In this context we decided to adopt the Twomey et al. (1977) relaxation scheme. The resulting code was extensively tested on a set of simulated VIRTIS-M data. Comparison of the known input conditions with the results of analysis code allowed us to evaluate the systematic and random errors affecting the retrievals procedures on a statistical basis. The code returns the vertical air temperature profile with an uncertainty of less than 1 K in the region between 70 and 7 mbar (66 and 77 km above the reference surface) and less than 4 K throughout the entire range 100-0.1 mbar (64-95 km). Finally, we present the first examples of the code applied to actual measured Venusian data, demonstrating its capability to achieve a satisfactory modeling of the observations and provide physically reasonable results.

The first four complete spectra recorded by the near infrared mapping spectrometer (NIMS) instrument on the Galileo spacecraft in 1996 have been analyzed. These spectra remain the only ones which have been obtained at maximum resolution over the entire NIMS wavelength range of 0.7 - 5.2 μm. The spectra cover the edge of a "warm" spot at location 5°N, 85°W. We have analyzed the spectra first with reflecting layer models and then with full multiple scattering models using the method of correlated-k. We find that there is strong evidence for three different cloud layers composed of a haze consistent with 0.5-μm radius tholins at 0.2 bar, a cloud of 0.75-lim NH3 particles at about 0.7 bar, and a two-component NH4SH cloud at about 1.4 bars with both 50.0- and 0.45-μm particles, the former being responsible for the main 5-μm cloud opacity. The NH3 relative humidity above the cloud tops is found to decrease slightly as the 5-μm brightness increases, with a mean value of approximately 14%. We also find that the mean volume mixing ratio of ammonia above the middle (NtL4SH) cloud deck is (1.7± 0.1) × 10-4 and shows a similar, though less discernible decrease with increasing 5-μm brightness. The deep volume mixing ratios of deuterated methane and phosphine are found to be constant and we estimate their mean values to be (4.9± 0.2) × 10-7 and (7.7 ± 0.2) × 10-7, respectively. The fractional scale height of phosphine above the 1 bar level is found to be 27.1± 1.4% and shows a slight decrease with increasing 5-μm brightness. The relative humidity of water vapor is found to be approximately 7%, but while this and all the previous observations are consistent with the assumption that "hot spots" are regions of downwelling, desiccated air, we find that the water vapor relative humidity increases as the 5-μm brightness increases. International audience; This Letter reports the first detection of the three 13C isotopologues of HC3N on Titan, from Cassini Composite Infrared Spectrometer (CIRS) infrared spectra. The data are limb spectra taken at latitudes N54°-N69° in 2006 and 2007 when HC3N was enhanced in the north. Using a new line list for the nu5 bands of all isotopologues, we have modeled the isolated emission of H13CCCN at 658.7 cm-1 and both HC13CCN and HCC13CN at 663.0 cm-1, which are blended with the Q-branch of HC3N at 663.3 cm-1 at the resolution of CIRS (0.5 cm-1) and detectable as an increase in the intensity of the low-frequency wing. Using the resolved pair H13CCCN /HC3N we find 12C/13C=79+/-17, in line with other measurements on Titan from Cassini and Huygens.

The Cassini Composite Infrared Spectrometer (CIRS) has been used to derive the vertical and meridional variation of temperature and phosphine (PH3) abundance in Saturn's upper troposphere. PH3 has a significant effect on the measured radiances in the thermal infrared and between May 2004 and September 2005 CIRS recorded thousands of spectra in both the far (10-600 cm-1) and mid (600-1400 cm-1) infrared, at a variety of latitudes covering the southern hemisphere. Low spectral resolution (15 cm-1) data has been used to constrain the temperature structure of the troposphere between 100 and 500 mbar. The vertical distributions of phosphine and ammonia were retrieved from far-infrared spectra at the highest spectral resolution (0.5 cm-1), and lower resolution (2.5 cm-1) mid-infrared data were used to map the meridional variation in the abundance of phosphine in the 250-500 mbar range. Temperature variations at the 250 mbar level are shown to occur on the same scale as the prograde and retrograde jets in Saturn's atmosphere [Porco, C.C., and 34 colleagues, 2005. Science 307, 1243-1247]. The PH3 abundance at 250 mbar is found to be enhanced at the equator when compared with mid-latitudes. At mid latitudes we see anti-correlation between temperature and PH3 abundance at 250 mbar, phosphine being enhanced at 45° S and depleted at 25 and 55° S. The vertical distribution is markedly different polewards of 60-65° S, with depleted PH3 at 500 mbar but a slower decline in abundance with altitude when compared with the mid-latitudes. This variation is similar to the variations of cloud and aerosol parameters observed in the visible and near infrared, and may indicate the subsidence of tropospheric air at polar latitudes, coupled with a diminished sunlight penetration depth reducing the rate of PH3 photolysis in the polar region. © 2006 Elsevier Inc. The planet-encircling springtime storm in Saturn's troposphere (December 2010-July 2011, Fletcher, L.N. et al. [2011]. Science 332, 1413-1414; Sánchez-Lavega, A. et al. [2011]. Nature 475, 71-74; Fischer, G. et al. [2011]. Nature 475, 75-77) produced dramatic perturbations to stratospheric temperatures, winds and composition at mbar pressures that persisted long after the tropospheric disturbance had abated. Thermal infrared (IR) spectroscopy from the Cassini Composite Infrared Spectrometer (CIRS), supported by ground-based IR imaging from the VISIR instrument on the Very Large Telescope and the MIRSI instrument on NASA's IRTF, is used to track the evolution of a large, hot stratospheric anticyclone between January 2011 and March 2012. The evolutionary sequence can be divided into three phases: (I) the formation and intensification of two distinct warm airmasses near 0.5. mbar between 25 and 35°N (B1 and B2) between January-April 2011, moving westward with different zonal velocities, B1 residing directly above the convective tropospheric storm head; (II) the merging of the warm airmasses to form the large single 'stratospheric beacon' near 40°N (B0) between April and June 2011, disassociated from the storm head and at a higher pressure (2 mbar) than the original beacons, a downward shift of 1.4 scale heights (approximately 85. km) post-merger; and (III) the mature phase characterised by slow cooling (0.11. ±. 0.01. K/day) and longitudinal shrinkage of the anticyclone since July 2011. Peak temperatures of 221.6. ±. 1.4. K at 2. mbar were measured on May 5th 2011 immediately after the merger, some 80. K warmer than the quiescent surroundings. From July 2011 to the time of writing, B0 remained as a long-lived stable stratospheric phenomenon at 2. mbar, moving west with a near-constant velocity of 2.70. ±. 0.04. deg/day (-24.5. ±. 0.4. m/s at 40°N relative to System III longitudes). No perturbations to visible clouds and hazes were detected during this period.With no direct tracers of motion in the stratosphere, we use thermal windshear calculations to estimate clockwise peripheral velocities of 200-400m/s at 2mbar around B0. The peripheral velocities of the two original airmasses were smaller (70-140m/s). In August 2011, the size of the vortex as defined by the peripheral collar was 65° longitude (50,000km in diameter) and 25° latitude. Stratospheric acetylene (C 2H 2) was uniformly enhanced by a factor of three within the vortex, whereas ethane (C 2H 6) remained unaffected. The passage of B0 generated a new band of warm stratospheric emission at 0.5mbar at its northern edge, and there are hints of warm stratospheric structures associated with the beacons at higher altitudes (p

Observations of Neptune were made in September 2009 with the Gemini-North Telescope in Hawaii, using the NIFS instrument in the H-band covering the wavelength range 1.477-1.803 μm. Observations were acquired in adaptive optics mode and have a spatial resolution of approximately 0.15-0.25″. The observations were analysed with a multiple-scattering retrieval algorithm to determine the opacity of clouds at different levels in Neptune's atmosphere. We find that the observed spectra at all locations are very well fit with a model that has two thin cloud layers, one at a pressure level of ∼2. bar all over the planet and an upper cloud whose pressure level varies from 0.02 to 0.08. bar in the bright mid-latitude region at 20-40°S to as deep as 0.2. bar near the equator. The opacity of the upper cloud is found to vary greatly with position, but the opacity of the lower cloud deck appears remarkably uniform, except for localised bright spots near 60°S and a possible slight clearing near the equator. A limb-darkening analysis of the observations suggests that the single-scattering albedo of the upper cloud particles varies from ∼0.4 in regions of low overall albedo to close to 1.0 in bright regions, while the lower cloud is consistent with particles that have a single-scattering albedo of ∼0.75 at this wavelength, similar to the value determined for the main cloud deck in Uranus' atmosphere. The Henyey-Greenstein scattering particle asymmetry of particles in the upper cloud deck are found to be in the range g∼ 0.6-0.7 (i.e. reasonably strongly forward scattering).Numerous bright clouds are seen near Neptune's south pole at a range of pressure levels and at latitudes between 60 and 70°S. Discrete clouds were seen at the pressure level of the main cloud deck (∼2. bar) at 60°S on three of the six nights observed. Assuming they are the same feature we estimate the rotation rate at this latitude and pressure to be 13.2 ± 0.1. h. However, the observations are not entirely consistent with a single non-evolving cloud feature, which suggests that the cloud opacity or albedo may vary very rapidly at this level at a rate not seen in any other giant-planet atmosphere. © 2011 Elsevier Inc.

Observations of Uranus were made in September 2009 with the Gemini-North telescope in Hawaii, using both the NIFS and NIRI instruments. Observations were acquired in Adaptive Optics mode and have a spatial resolution of approximately 0.1″. NIRI images were recorded with three spectral filters to constrain the overall appearance of the planet: J, H-continuum and CH 4 (long), and long slit spectroscopy measurements were also made (1.49–1.79 μm) with the entrance slit aligned on Uranus’ central meridian. To acquire spectra from other points on the planet, the NIFS instrument was used and its 3″ × 3″ field of view stepped across Uranus’ disc. These observations were combined to yield complete images of Uranus at 2040 wavelengths between 1.476 and 1.803 μm. The observed spectra along Uranus central meridian were analysed with the NEMESIS retrieval tool and used to infer the vertical/latitudinal variation in cloud optical depth. We find that the 2009 Gemini data perfectly complement our observations/conclusions from UKIRT/UIST observations made in 2006–2008 and show that the north polar zone at 45°N has continued to steadily brighten while that at 45°S has continued to fade. The improved spatial resolution of the Gemini observations compared with the non-AO UKIRT/UIST data removes some of the earlier ambiguities with our previous analyses and shows that the opacity of clouds deeper than the 2-bar level does indeed diminish towards the poles and also reveals a darkening of the deeper cloud deck near the equator, perhaps coinciding with a region of subduction. We find that the clouds at 45°N,S lie at slightly lower pressures than the clouds at more equatorial latitudes, which suggests that they might possibly be composed of a different condensate, presumably CH 4 ice, rather than H 2 S or NH 3 ice, which is assumed for the deeper cloud. In addition, analysis of the centre-to-limb curves of both the Gemini/NIFS and earlier UKIRT/UIST IFU observations shows that the main cloud deck has a well-defined top, and also allows us to better constrain the particle scattering properties. Overall, Uranus appeared to be less convectively active in 2009 than in the previous 3 years, which suggests that now the northern spring equinox (which occurred in 2007) is passed the atmosphere is settling back into the quiescent state seen by Voyager 2 in 1986. However, a number of discrete clouds were still observed, with one at 15°N found to lie near the 500 mb level, while another at 30°N, was seen to be much higher at near the 200 mb level. Such high clouds are assumed to be composed of CH 4 ice.

Five years of Cassini CIRS infrared spectra have been used to determine the tilt of Titan's stratospheric symmetry axis with respect to the solid body rotation axis. Measurements of HCN abundance centred around 5 mbar (125 km altitude) at equatorial latitudes show the symmetry axis is tilted by 4.0 ± 1 . 5{ring operator} in a direction 70 ± 40{ring operator} W of the sub-solar point. This value is consistent with tilts determined from temperature and haze measurements by Achterberg et al. (2008a) and Roman et al. (2009). The consistency of results from three independent methods suggests that Titan's entire stratosphere is tilted and provides a powerful constraint on the underlying atmospheric dynamics. © 2010 Elsevier Ltd. The sub-millimetre/microwave range of the spectrum has been exploited in the field of Earth observation by many instruments over the years and has provided a plethora of information on atmospheric chemistry and dynamicshowever, this spectral range has not been fully explored in planetary science, having been exclusively employed to carry out ground-based measurements. To this end, a sub-millimetre instrument, the Orbiter Terahertz Infrared Spectrometer (ORTIS), is studied by the University of Oxford and the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, to meet the requirements of the European Space Agency's Cosmic Visions 2015-2025 programme-in particular, the Europa Jupiter System Mission (EJSM), which has the European Space Agency and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration as partners. ORTIS is designed to measure atmospheric temperature, the abundance of stratospheric water vapour and other jovian gases, and is intended to be capable of retrieving vertical profiles of horizontal windspeed in the stratosphere for the first time, from Doppler-shifted emission lines measured at high spectral resolution. In this work, a preliminary study and implementation of the estimation of windspeed profiles on simulated spectra representative of Jupiter is presented, detailing the development of the retrieval algorithm, showing that a sub-millimetre instrument such as ORTIS should be able to retrieve windspeed profiles to an accuracy of about 15 m/s between 70 and 200 km/0.1-10 mb using a single near-limb measurement, for expected noise amplitudes. © 2010 Elsevier B.V.. Fine scale layering of haze and composition in Titan's stratosphere and mesosphere was investigated using visible/UV images from Cassini's Imaging Science Sub-system (ISS) and IR spectra from Cassini's Composite Infra-Red Spectrometer (CIRS). Both ISS and CIRS independently show fine layered structures in haze and composition, respectively, in the 150-450 km altitude range with a preferred vertical wavelength of around 50 km. Layers are most pronounced around the north polar winter vortex, although some weaker layers do exist at more southerly latitudes. The amplitude of composition layers in each trace gas profile is proportional to the relative enrichment of that species in the winter polar vortex compared to equatorial latitudes. As enrichment is caused by polar subsidence, this suggests a dynamical origin. We propose that the polar layers are caused by cross-latitude advection across the vortex boundary. Long-slit spectroscopy observations of Uranus by the United Kingdom Infrared Telescope UIST instrument in 2006, 2007 and 2008 have been used to monitor the change in Uranus' vertical and latitudinal cloud structure through the planet's northern spring equinox in December 2007. The observed reflectance spectra in the Long J (1.17-1.31 μm) and H (1.45-1.65 μm) bands, obtained with the slit aligned along Uranus' central meridian, have been fitted with an optimal estimation retrieval model to determine the vertical cloud profile from 0.1 to 6-8 bar over a wide range of latitudes. Context images in a number of spectral bands were used to discriminate general zonal cloud structural changes from passing discrete clouds. From 2006 to 2007 reflection from deep clouds at pressures between 2 and 6-8 bar increased at all latitudes, although there is some systematic uncertainty in the absolute pressure levels resulting from extrapolating the methane coefficients of Irwin et al. (Irwin, P.G.J., Sromovsky, L.A., Strong, E.K., Sihra, K., Teanby, N.A., Bowles, N., Calcutt, S.B., Remedios, J.J. [2006] Icarus, 181, 309-319) at pressures greater than 1 bar, as noted by Tomasko et al. and Karkoschka and Tomasko (Tomasko, M.G., Bezard, B., Doose, L., Engel, S., Karkoschka, E. [2008] Planet. Space Sci., 56, 624-647; Karkoschka, E., Tomasko, M. [2009] Icarus). However, from 2007 to 2008 reflection from these clouds throughout the southern hemisphere and from both northern and southern mid-latitudes (30° N,S) diminished. As a result, the southern polar collar at 45°S has diminished in brightness relative to mid-latitudes, a similar collar at 45°N has become more prominent (e.g. Rages, K.A., Hammel, H.B., Sromovsky, L. [2007] Bull. Am. Astron. Soc., 39, 425; Sromovsky, L.A., Fry, P.M., Ahue, W.M., Hammel, H.B., de Pater, I., Rages, K.A., Showalter, M.R., van Dam, M.A. [2008] vol. 40 of AAS/Division for Planetary Sciences Meeting Abstracts, pp. 488-489; Sromovsky, L.A., Ahue, W.K.M., Fry, P.M., Hammel, H.B., de Pater, I., Rages, K.A., Showalter, M.R. [2009] Icarus), and the lowering reflectivity from mid-latitudes has left a noticeable brighter cloud zone at the equator (e.g. Sromovsky, L.A., Fry, P.M. [2007] Icarus, 192, 527-557;Karkoschka, E., Tomasko, M. [2009] Icarus). For such substantial cloud changes to have occurred in just two years suggests that the circulation of Uranus' atmosphere is much more vigorous and/or efficient than is commonly thought. The composition of the main observed cloud decks between 2 and 6-8 bar is unclear, but the absence of the expected methane cloud at 1.2-1.3 bar (Lindal, G.F., Lyons, J.R., Sweetnam, D.N., Eshleman, V.R., Hinson, D.P. [1987] J. Geophys. Res., 92, 14987-15001) is striking (as previously noted by, among others, Sromovsky, L.A., Irwin, P.G.J., Fry, P.M. [2006] Icarus, 182, 577-593; Sromovsky, L.A., Fry, P.M. [2007] Icarus, 192, 527-557; Sromovsky, L.A., Fry, P.M. [2008] Icarus, 193, 252-266; Karkoschka, E., Tomasko, M. [2009] Icarus) and suggests that cloud particles may be considerably different from pure condensates and may be linked with stratospheric haze particles drizzling down from above, or that tropospheric hazes are generated near the methane condensation level and then drizzle down to deep pressures as suggested by Karkoschka and Tomasko (Karkoschka, E., Tomasko, M. [2009] Icarus). The retrieved cloud structures were also tested for different assumptions of the deep methane mole fraction, which Karkoschka and Tomasko (Karkoschka, E., Tomasko, M. [2009] Icarus) find may vary from ∼1-2% in polar regions to perhaps as much as 4% equatorwards of 45°N,S. High spectral resolution observations from the Cassini Composite Infrared Spectrometer [Flasar, F.M., and 44 colleagues, 2004. Space Sci. Rev. 115, 169–297] are analysed to derive new estimates for the mole fractions of CH4, CH3D and 13CH4 of ( 4.7 ± 0.2 ) × 10 −3 , ( 3.0 ± 0.2 ) × 10 −7 and ( 5.1 ± 0.2 ) × 10 −5 respectively. The mole fractions show no hemispherical asymmetries or latitudinal variability. The analysis combines data from the far-IR methane rotational lines and the mid-IR features of methane and its isotopologues, using both the correlated-k retrieval algorithm of Irwin et al. [Irwin, P., and 9 colleagues, 2008. J. Quant. Spectrosc. Radiat. Trans. 109, 1136–1150] and a line-by-line approach to evaluate the reliability of the retrieved quantities. C/H was found to be enhanced by 10.9 ± 0.5 times the solar composition of Grevesse et al. [Grevesse, N., Asplund, M., Sauval, A., 2007. Space Sci. Rev. 130 (1), 105–114], 2.25 ± 0.55 times larger than the enrichment on Jupiter, and supporting the increasing fractional core mass with distance from the Sun predicted by the core accretion model of planetary formation. A comparison of the jovian and saturnian C/N, C/S and C/P ratios suggests different reservoirs of the trapped volatiles in a primordial solar nebula whose composition varies with distance from the Sun. This is supported by our derived D/H ratio in methane of ( 1.6 ± 0.2 ) × 10 −5 , which appears to be smaller than the jovian value of Lellouch et al. [Lellouch, E., Bezard, B., Fouchet, T., Feuchtgruber, H., Encrenaz, T., de Graauw, T., 2001. Astron. Astrophys. 370, 610–622]. Mid-IR emission features provided an estimate of C 12 / C 13 = 91.8 −7.8 +8.4 , which is consistent with both the terrestrial ratio and jovian ratio, suggesting that carbon was accreted from a shared reservoir for all of the planets.

In Titan's north polar region stratospheric clouds are expected to form due to a combination of low temperatures and downward motion of volatile-enriched air. Here we investigate possible sources of stratospheric clouds at Titan's pole using data from the Cassini Composite Infrared Spectrometer and a simple condensation model. An upper limit for C 4 N 2 gas was determined to be 9 × 10 −9 , which is less than required to make the C 4 N 2 cloud at the Voyager epoch. Hence, the presence of this cloud after equinox remains a mystery. The largest cloud seen in far-infrared spectra has a feature around 220 cm −1 and is located around an altitude of 140 km. The upper limit for propionitrile (C 2 H 5 CN) gas shows that the feature around 220 cm −1 is probably not due to pure propionitrile ice. Instead, our model calculations show that HCN should cause by far the largest cloud around 140 km. We therefore propose that HCN ice plays an important role in the formation of the massive polar cloud, because of the unavailability of sufficient condensable gas other than HCN to produce a strong enough condensate feature. However, the signature at 220 cm −1 is not consistent with that of pure HCN ice at 172 cm −1 and mixing of HCN ice with other ices, or chemical alteration of HCN ice might mask the HCN ice signature.

International audience; Mid-infrared spectra measured by Cassini's Composite InfraRed Spectrometer (CIRS) between July 2004 and January 2007 ( L=293°-328°) have been used to determine stratospheric temperature and abundances of C 2H 2, C 3H 4, C 4H 2, HCN, and HC 3N. Over 65,000 nadir spectra with spectral resolutions of 0.5 and 2.5 cm -1 were used to probe spatial and temporal composition variations in Titan's stratosphere. Cassini's 180° orbital transfer in mid-2006 allowed low emission angle observations of the north polar region for the first time in the mission and allowed us to probe the full latitude range. We present the first measurements of composition variations within the polar vortex, which display increasing abundances right up to 90° N. The lack of a homogeneous abundance-latitude variation within the vortex indicates limited horizontal mixing and suggests that subsidence is greatest at the vortex core. Contrary to numerical model predictions and tropospheric cloud observations, we do not see any evidence for a secondary circulation cell near the south pole, which suggests a single Hadley-type circulation in the stratosphere at this epoch. This difference can be reconciled if the secondary cell is restricted to altitudes below 100 km, where there is no sensitivity in our data. Temporal variations in composition were observed in the south, with volatile species becoming less abundant as the season progressed. The observed variations are compared to numerical model predictions and observations from Voyager.

These are the first results from nadir studies of meridional variations in the abundance of stratospheric acetylene and ethane from Cassini/CIRS data in the southern hemisphere of Saturn. High resolution, 0.5 cm −1 , CIRS data was used from three data sets taken in June–November 2004 and binned into 2° wide latitudinal strips to increase the signal-to-noise ratio. Tropospheric and stratospheric temperatures were initially retrieved to determine the temperature profile for each latitude bin. The stratospheric temperature at 2 mbar increased by 14 K from 9° to 68° S, including a steep 4 K rise between 60° and 68° S. The tropospheric temperatures showed significantly more meridional variation than the stratospheric ones, the locations of which are strongly correlated to that of the zonal jets. Stratospheric acetylene abundance decreases steadily from 30 to 68° S, by a factor of 1.8 at 2.0 mbar. Between 18° and 30° S the acetylene abundance increases at 2.0 mbar. Global values for acetylene have been calculated as ( 1.9 ± 0.19 ) × 10 −7 at 2.0 mbar, ( 2.6 ± 0.27 ) × 10 −7 at 1.6 mbar and ( 3.1 ± 0.32 ) × 10 −7 at 1.4 mbar. Global values for ethane are also determined and found to be ( 1.6 ± 0.25 ) × 10 −5 at 0.5 mbar and ( 1.4 ± 0.19 ) × 10 −5 at 1.0 mbar. Ethane abundance in the stratosphere increases towards the south pole by a factor of 2.5 at 2.0 mbar. The increase in stratospheric ethane is especially pronounced polewards of 60° S at 2.0 mbar. The increase of stratospheric ethane towards the south pole supports the presence of a meridional wind system in the stratosphere of Saturn.

International audience; Mid-infrared limb spectra in the range 600-1400 cm -1 taken with the Composite InfraRed Spectrometer (CIRS) on-board the Cassini spacecraft were used to determine vertical profiles of HCN, HC 3N, C 2H 2, and temperature in Titan's atmosphere. Both high (0.5 cm -1) and low (13.5 cm -1) spectral resolution data were used. The 0.5 cm -1 data gave profiles at four latitudes and the 13.5 cm -1 data gave almost complete latitudinal coverage of the atmosphere. Both datasets were found to be consistent with each other. High temperatures in the upper stratosphere and mesosphere were observed at Titan's northern winter pole and were attributed to adiabatic heating in the subsiding branch of a meridional circulation cell. On the other hand, the lower stratosphere was much colder in the north than at the equator, which can be explained by the lack of solar radiation and increased IR emission from volatile enriched air. HC 3N had a vertical profile consistent with previous ground based observations at southern and equatorial latitudes, but was massively enriched near the north pole. This can also be explained in terms of subsidence at the winter pole. A boundary observed at 60° N between enriched and un-enriched air is consistent with a confining polar vortex at 60° N and HC 3N's short lifetime. In the far north, layers were observed in the HC 3N profile that were reminiscent of haze layers observed by Cassini's imaging cameras. HCN was also enriched over the north pole, which gives further evidence for subsidence. However, the atmospheric cross section obtained from 13.5 cm -1 data indicated a HCN enriched layer at 200-250 km, extending into the southern hemisphere. This could be interpreted as advection of polar enriched air towards the south by a meridional circulation cell. This is observed for HCN but not for HC 3N due to HCN's longer photochemical lifetime. C 2H 2 appears to have a uniform abundance with altitude and is not significantly enriched in the north. This is consistent with observations from previous CIRS analysis that show increased abundances of nitriles and hydrocarbons but not C 2H 2 towards the north pole.

Far-IR 16-1000 $\mu$m spectra of Saturn's hydrogen-helium continuum measured by Cassini's Composite Infrared Spectrometer (CIRS) are inverted to construct a near-continuous record of upper tropospheric (70-700 mbar) temperatures and para-H$_2$ fraction as a function of latitude, pressure and time for a third of a Saturnian year (2004-2014, from northern winter to northern spring). The thermal field reveals evidence of reversing summertime asymmetries superimposed onto the belt/zone structure. The temperature structure that is almost symmetric about the equator by 2014, with seasonal lag times that increase with depth and are qualitatively consistent with radiative climate models. Localised heating of the tropospheric hazes (100-250 mbar) create a distinct perturbation to the temperature profile that shifts in magnitude and location, declining in the autumn hemisphere and growing in the spring. Changes in the para-H$_2$ ($f_p$) distribution are subtle, with a 0.02-0.03 rise over the spring hemisphere (200-500 mbar) perturbed by (i) low-$f_p$ air advected by both the springtime storm of 2010 and equatorial upwelling; and (ii) subsidence of high-$f_p$ air at northern high latitudes, responsible for a developing north-south asymmetry in $f_p$. Conversely, the shifting asymmetry in the para-H$_2$ disequilibrium primarily reflects the changing temperature structure (and the equilibrium distribution of $f_p$), rather than actual changes in $f_p$ induced by chemical conversion or transport. CIRS results interpolated to the same point in the seasonal cycle as re-analysed Voyager-1 observations show qualitative consistency, with the exception of the tropical tropopause near the equatorial zones and belts, where downward propagation of a cool temperature anomaly associated with Saturn's stratospheric oscillation could potentially perturb tropopause temperatures, para-H$_2$ and winds. New measurements of the low-temperature near-infrared absorption of methane (Sihra, 1998, Laboratory measurements of near-infrared methane bands for remote sensing of the jovian atmosphere, Ph.D. thesis, University of Oxford) have been combined with existing, longer path-length, higher-temperature data of Strong et al. (1993, Spectral parameters of self- and hydrogen-broadened methane from 2000 to 9500 cm−1 for remote sounding of the atmosphere of Jupiter, J. Quant. Spectrosc. Radiat. Trans. 50, 309–325) and fitted with band models. The combined data set is found to be more consistent with previous low-temperature methane absorption measurements than that of Strong et al. (1993, J. Quant. Spectrosc. Radiat. Trans. 50, 309–325) but covers the same wider wavelength range and accounts for both self- and hydrogen-broadening conditions. These data have been fitted with k-coefficients in the manner described by Irwin et al. (1996, Calculated k-distribution coefficients for hydrogen- and self-broadened methane in the range 2000–9500 cm−1 from exponential sum fitting to band modelled spectra, J. Geophys. Res. 101, 26,137–26,154) and have been used in multiple-scattering radiative transfer models to assess their impact on our previous estimates of the jovian cloud structure obtained from Galileo Near-Infrared Mapping Spectrometer (NIMS) observations (Irwin et al., 1998, Cloud structure and atmospheric composition of Jupiter retrieved from Galileo NIMS real-time spectra, J. Geophys. Res. 103, 23,001–23,021; Irwin et al., 2001, The origin of belt/zone contrasts in the atmosphere of Jupiter and their correlation with 5-μm opacity, Icarus 149, 397–415; Irwin and Dyudina, 2002, The retrieval of cloud structure maps in the equatorial region of Jupiter using a principal component analysis of Galileo/NIMS data, Icarus 156, 52–63). Although significant differences in methane opacity are found at cooler temperatures, the difference in the optical depth of the atmosphere due to methane is found to diminish rapidly with increasing pressure and temperature and thus has negligible effect on the cloud structure inferred at deeper levels. Hence the main cloud opacity variation is still found to peak at around 1–2 bar using our previous analytical approach, and is thus still in disagreement with Galileo Solid State Imager (SSI) determinations (Banfield et al., 1998, Jupiter's cloud structure from Galileo imaging data, Icarus 135, 230–250; Simon-Miller et al., 2001, Color and the vertical structure in Jupiter's belts, zones and weather systems, Icarus 154, 459–474) which place the main cloud deck near 0.9 bar. Further analysis of our retrievals reveals that this discrepancy is probably due to the different assumptions of the two analyses. Our retrievals use a smooth vertically extended cloud profile while the SSI determinations assume a thin NH3 cloud below an extended haze. When the main opacity in our model is similarly assumed to be due to a thin cloud below an extended haze, we find the main level of cloud opacity variation to be near the 1 bar level—close to that determined by SSI and moderately close to the expected condensation level of ammonia ice of 0.85 bar, assuming that the abundance of ammonia on Jupiter is ( 7 ± 1 ) × 10 −4 (Folkner et al., 1998, Ammonia abundance in Jupiter's atmosphere derived from the attenuation of the Galileo probe's radio signal, J. Geophys. Res. 103, 22,847–22,855; Atreya et al., 1999, A comparison of the atmospheres of Jupiter and Saturn: deep atmospheric composition, cloud structure, vertical mixing, and origin, Planet. Space Sci. 47, 1243–1262). However our data in the 1–2.5 μm range have good height discrimination and our lowest estimate of the cloud base pressure of 1 bar is still too great to be consistent with the most recent estimates of the ammonia abundance of 3.5 × solar. Furthermore the observed limited spatial distribution of ammonia ice absorption features on Jupiter suggests that pure ammonia ice is only present in regions of localised vigorous uplift (Baines et al., 2002, Fresh ammonia ice clouds in Jupiter: spectroscopic identification, spatial distribution, and dynamical implications, Icarus 159, 74–94) and is subsequently rapidly modified in some way which masks its pure absorption features. Hence we conclude that the main cloud deck on Jupiter is unlikely to be composed of pure ammonia ice and instead find that it must be composed of either NH4SH or some other unknown combination of ammonia, water, and hydrogen sulphide and exists at pressures of between 1 and 2 bar.

We present spectrally and spatially-resolved maps of HNC and HC$_3$N emission from Titan's atmosphere, obtained using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) on 2013 November 17. These maps show anisotropic spatial distributions for both molecules, with resolved emission peaks in Titan's northern and southern hemispheres. The HC$_3$N maps indicate enhanced concentrations of this molecule over the poles, consistent with previous studies of Titan's photochemistry and atmospheric circulation. Differences between the spectrally-integrated flux distributions of HNC and HC$_3$N show that these species are not co-spatial. The observed spectral line shapes are consistent with HNC being concentrated predominantly in the mesosphere and above (at altitudes $z\gtrsim 400$ km), whereas HC$_3$N is abundant at a broader range of altitudes ($z\approx70$-600 km). From spatial variations in the HC$_3$N line profile, the locations of the HC$_3$N emission peaks are shown to be variable as a function of altitude. The peaks in the integrated emission from HNC and the line core (upper-atmosphere) component of HC$_3$N (at $z\gtrsim300$ km) are found to be asymmetric with respect to Titan's polar axis, indicating that the mesosphere may be more longitudinally-variable than previously thought. The spatially-integrated HNC and HC$_3$N spectra are modeled using the NEMESIS planetary atmosphere code and the resulting best-fitting disk-averaged vertical mixing ratio (VMR) profiles are found to be in reasonable agreement with previous measurements for these species. Vertical column densities of the best-fitting gradient models for HNC and HC$_3$N are $1.9\times10^{13}$ cm$^{-2}$ and $2.3\times10^{14}$ cm$^{-2}$, respectively., Accepted for publication in ApJ Letters

NIMS is the Near-Infrared Mapping Spectrometer on board the Galileo spacecraft in jovian orbit. We have selected four maps of warm-to-hot regions of the North Equatorial Belt (NEB) for study, analyzing the spectra emerging in the low-opacity 5-μm window. Two methods for calculating the spectrum have been used. The first is a full-scattering radiative transfer forward model that is slow but accurate. The second method calculates spectra by interpolating on a grid of spectra precalculated using the first method for a range of model atmospheres. This method of forward calculation is more suited to analysis of large data sets where application of the full radiative transfer in every instance would be computationally prohibitive. The faster method is verified against the first before being used alone. A retrieval (inversion) algorithm is then used to match model spectra to data and obtain values for cloud opacities and gas mixing ratios. We first sum spectra with similar peak radiances to produce mean spectra representative of brighter and darker (at 5 μm) regions of the maps. These coadded spectra are then analyzed with the fast retrieval code to obtain the average variations in atmospheric parameters from the center to the edges of the hotspots. These analyses confirm that 5-μm hotspots are relatively cloud free, and that a medium level (1.5-bar) cloud layer of large NH4SH particles is the main absorber at these wavelengths. Variations in water vapor relative humidity and high (0.5-bar) ammonia cloud opacity are also derived. We then analyze single spectra over wide areas to produce spatial maps of parameter variations. We find that models that do not include a deep water cloud (~4 bar) do not match all the spectra to within the noise level. A deep water cloud therefore seems to be present in localized areas, toward the edges of the hotspot regions. We examine these findings in the light of results from other Galileo instruments, concluding that the deep cloud observed by the SSI instrument at several locations is likely to be the deep water cloud required by the NIMS data. © 2001 Academic Press.

This paper considers the rationale for the exploration of Saturn's atmosphere by the Cassini mission, taking account of the key scientific questions posed by the earlier investigation by Voyager, and the capabilities of the instrumentation making up the Cassini payload. While by no means all objectives can be addressed by this particular configuration, in particular without a Saturn entry probe, if everything goes according to plan important progress should be possible on a number of key objectives. The Galileo Near Infrared Mapping Spectrometer (NIMS) obtains spectral images in the wavelength range 0.7 to 5.2 μm with a spectral resolving power of approximately 200. This spectral range allows NIMS to sense cloud-reflected solar radiation, thermal emission produced in the deep atmosphere, and auroral emission from the thermosphere of Jupiter. Using 5 μm thermal emission spectroscopy, the amount of water vapor in the deep atmosphere, at approximately the (i to 8 bar level, is found to vary by a factor > 100. Deep atmosphere ammonia was also found to vary, with a spatial behavior different from that of water vapor. No evidence is found for a massive water cloud. Using reflected solar radiation in conjunction with thermal emission, two cloud layers are found, the upper at 0.5 bars and a lower one at 1-1.3 bars. The inferred absorption properties of these clouds are consistent with ammonia crystals (the upper cloud) and ammonium hydrosulfide particles (the lower cloud).

New line data describing the absorption of CH4 and CH3D from 1.26 to 1.71 μm (WKMC-80K, Campargue, A., Wang, L., Mondelain, D., Kassi, S., Bezard, B., Lellouch, E., Coustenis, A., de Bergh, C., Hirtzig, M., Drossart, P. [2012]. Icarus 219, 110–128) have been applied to the analysis of Gemini-N/NIFS observations of Neptune made in 2009 and VLT/CRIRES observations made in 2010. The new line data are found to greatly improve the fit to the observed spectra and present a considerable advance over previous methane datasets. The improved fits lead to an empirically derived wavelength-dependent correction to the scattering properties of the main observable cloud deck at 2–3 bars that is very similar to the correction determined for Uranus’ lower cloud using the same line dataset by Irwin et al. (Irwin, P.G.J., de Bergh, C., Courtin, R., Bezard, B., Teanby, N.A., Davis, G.R., Fletcher, L.N., Orton, G.S., Calcutt, S.B., Tice, D., Hurley, J. [2012]. Icarus 220, 369–382). By varying the abundance of CH3D in our simulations, analysis of the Gemini/NIFS observations leads to a new determination of the CH3D/CH4 ratio for Neptune of 3.0 - 0.9 + 1.0 × 10 - 4 , which is smaller than previous determinations, but is identical (to within error) with the CH3D/CH4 ratio of 2.9 - 0.5 + 0.9 × 10 - 4 derived by a similar analysis of Gemini/NIFS observations of Uranus made in the same year. Thus it appears that the atmospheres of Uranus and Neptune have an almost identical D/H ratio, which suggests that the icy planetisimals forming these planets came from the same source reservoir, or a reservoir that was well-mixed at the locations of ice giant formation, assuming complete mixing between the atmosphere and interior of both these planets. VLT/CRIRES observations of Neptune have also been analysed with the WKMC-80K methane line database, yielding very good fits, with little evidence for missing absorption features. The CRIRES spectra indicate that the mole fraction of CO at the 2–3 bar level must be substantially less than its estimated stratospheric value of 1 × 10−6, which suggests that the predominant source of CO in Neptune’s atmosphere is external, through the influx of micrometeorites and comets, although these data cannot rule out an additional internal source.

The existence of methane in Titan's atmosphere (∼6% level at the surface) presents a unique enigma, as photochemical models predict that the current inventory will be entirely depleted by photochemistry in a timescale of ∼20Myr. In this paper, we examine the clues available from isotopic ratios (12C/13C and D/H) in Titan's methane as to the past atmosphere history of this species. We first analyze recent infrared spectra of CH4 collected by the Cassini Composite Infrared Spectrometer, measuring simultaneously for the first time the abundances of all three detected minor isotopologues: 13CH4, 12CH3D, and 13CH3D. From these we compute estimates of 12C/13C= 86.5 ± 8.2 and D/H= (1.59 ± 0.33) × 10-4, in agreement with recent results from the Huygens GCMS and Cassini INMS instruments. We also use the transition state theory to estimate the fractionation that occurs in carbon and hydrogen during a critical reaction that plays a key role in the chemical depletion of Titan's methane: CH4+ C2H→ CH3+ C2H2. Using these new measurements and predictions we proceed to model the time evolution of 12C/13C and D/H in Titan's methane under several prototypical replenishment scenarios. In our Model1 (no resupply of CH4), we find that the present-day 12C/13C implies that the CH4 entered the atmosphere 60-1600Myr ago if methane is depleted by chemistry and photolysis alone, but much more recently - most likely less than 10Myr ago - if hydrodynamic escape is also occurring. On the other hand, if methane has been continuously supplied at the replenishment rate then the isotopic ratios provide no constraints, and likewise for the case where atmospheric methane is increasing. We conclude by discussing how these findings may be combined with other evidence to constrain the overall history of the atmospheric methane. © 2012 The American Astronomical Society. The first Martian year and a half of observations by the Mars Climate Sounder aboard the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter has revealed new details of the thermal structure and distributions of dust and water ice in the atmosphere. The Martian atmosphere is shown in the observations by the Mars Climate Sounder to vary seasonally between two modes: a symmetrical equinoctial structure with middle atmosphere polar warming and a solstitial structure with an intense middle atmosphere polar warming overlying a deep winter polar vortex. The dust distribution, in particular, is more complex than appreciated before the advent of these high (∼5 km) vertical resolution observations, which extend from near the surface to above 80 km and yield 13 dayside and 13 nightside pole-to-pole cross sections each day. Among the new features noted is a persistent maximum in dust mass mixing ratio at 15-25 km above the surface (at least on the nightside) during northern spring and summer. The water ice distribution is very sensitive to the diurnal and seasonal variation of temperature and is a good tracer of the vertically propagating tide. International audience; The Rosetta spacecraft accomplished a flyby of Mars on its way to 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko on 25 February 2007. In this paper we describe the measurements obtained by the M channel of the Visual and Infrared Thermal Imaging Spectrometer (VIRTIS-M) and the first scientific results derived from their analysis. The broad spectral coverage of the VIRTIS-M in the IR permitted the study of various phenomena occurring in the Martian atmosphere; observations were further exploited to achieve accurate absolute radiometric calibration. Nighttime data from the VIRTIS-M constrain the air temperature profile in the lower atmosphere (5-30 km), using variations in CO2 opacity at 4.3 mum. A comparison of this data with the global circulation model (GCM) by Forget et al. (1999) shows a trend of slightly higher air temperature in the VIRTIS-M retrievals; this is accompanied by the presence of moderate decreases (˜5 K) in large sections of the equatorial region. This is potentially related to the occurrence of water ice clouds. Daytime data from the VIRTIS-M reveal CO2 non-local thermodynamic equilibrium emission in the high atmosphere. A mapping of emission intensity confirms its strict dependence on solar zenith angle. Additionally, devoted limb observations allowed the retrieval of vertical emission intensity profiles, indicating a peak around 105 km in southern tropical regions. Ozone content can be effectively monitored by the emission of O2 (a1Deltag) at 1.27 mum. Retrieved emission intensity shows that polar regions are particularly rich in ozone. Aerosol scattering was observed in the 1-2.5 mum region above the night region above the night disk, suggesting the occurrence of very high noctilucent clouds.

Long-slit spectroscopy observations of Uranus by the United Kingdom InfraRed Telescope UIST instrument in 2006, 2007 and 2008 have been used to monitor the change in Uranus’ vertical and latitudinal cloud structure through the planet’s Northern Spring Equinox in December 2007. These spectra were analysed and presented by Irwin et al. (Irwin, P.G.J., Teanby, N.A., Davis, G.R. [2009]. Icarus 203, 287–302), but since publication, a new set of methane absorption data has become available (Karkoschka, E., Tomasko, M. [2010]. Methane absorption coefficients for the jovian planets from laboratory, Huygens, and HST data. Icarus 205, 674–694.), which appears to be more reliable at the cold temperatures and high pressures of Uranus’ deep atmosphere. We have fitted k -coefficients to these new methane absorption data and we find that although the latitudinal variation and inter-annual changes reported by Irwin et al. (2009) stand, the new k -data place the main cloud deck at lower pressures (2–3 bars) than derived previously in the H-band of ∼3–4 bars and ∼3 bars compared with ∼6 bars in the J-band. Indeed, we find that using the new k -data it is possible to reproduce satisfactorily the entire observed centre-of-disc Uranus spectrum from 1 to 1.75 μm with a single cloud at 2–3 bars provided that we make the particles more back-scattering at wavelengths less than 1.2 μm by, for example, increasing the assumed single-scattering albedo from 0.75 (assumed in the J and H-bands) to near 1.0. In addition, we find that using a deep methane mole fraction of 4% in combination with the associated warm ‘F’ temperature profile of Lindal et al. (Lindal, G.F., Lyons, J.R., Sweetnam, D.N., Eshleman, V.R., Hinson, D.P. [1987]. J. Geophys. Res. 92, 14987–15001), the retrieved cloud deck using the new (Karkoschka and Tomasko, 2010) methane absorption data moves to between 1 and 2 bars. The same methane absorption data and retrieval algorithm were applied to observations of Neptune made during the same programme and we find that we can again fit the entire 1–1.75 μm centre-of-disc spectrum with a single cloud model, providing that we make the stratospheric haze particles (of much greater opacity than for Uranus) conservatively scattering (i.e. ω = 1) and we also make the deeper cloud particles, again at around the 2 bar level more reflective for wavelengths less than 1.2 μm. Hence, apart from the increased opacity of stratospheric hazes in Neptune’s atmosphere, the deeper cloud structure and cloud composition of Uranus and Neptune would appear to be very similar.

Thermal-IR imaging from space-borne and ground-based observatories was used to investigate the temperature, composition and aerosol structure of Jupiter's Great Red Spot (GRS) and its temporal variability between 1995 and 2008. An elliptical warm core, extending over 8° of longitude and 3° of latitude, was observed within the cold anticyclonic vortex at 21°S. The warm airmass is co-located with the deepest red coloration of the GRS interior. The maximum contrast between the core and the coldest regions of the GRS was 3.0-3.5. K in the north-south direction at 400. mbar atmospheric pressure, although the warmer temperatures are present throughout the 150-500. mbar range. The resulting thermal gradients cause counter-rotating flow in the GRS center to decay with altitude into the lower stratosphere. The elliptical warm airmass was too small to be observed in IRTF imaging prior to 2006, but was present throughout the 2006-2008 period in VLT, Subaru and Gemini imaging.Spatially-resolved maps of mid-IR tropospheric aerosol opacity revealed a well-defined lane of depleted aerosols around the GRS periphery, and a correlation with visibly-dark jovian clouds and bright 4.8-μm emission. Ammonia showed a similar but broader ring of depletion encircling the GRS. This narrow lane of subsidence keeps red aerosols physically separate from white aerosols external to the GRS. The visibility of the 4.8-μm bright periphery varies with the mid-IR aerosol opacity of the upper troposphere. Compositional maps of ammonia, phosphine and para-H2 within the GRS interior all exhibit north-south asymmetries, with evidence for higher concentrations north of the warm central core and the strongest depletions in a symmetric arc near the southern periphery. Small-scale enhancements in temperature, NH3 and aerosol opacity associated with localized convection are observed within the generally-warm and aerosol-free South Equatorial Belt (SEB) northwest of the GRS. The extent of 4.8-μm emission from the SEB varied as a part of the 2007 'global upheaval,' though changes during this period were restricted to pressures greater than 500mbar. Finally, a region of enhanced temperatures extended southwest of the GRS during the survey, restricted to the 100-400mbar range and with no counterpart in visible imaging or compositional mapping. The warm airmass was perturbed by frequent encounters with the cold airmass of Oval BA, but no internal thermal or compositional effects were noted in either vortex during the close encounters. © 2010 Elsevier Inc.

Observations of Titan's far infra-red spectra by the Cassini orbiter's Composite InfraRed Spectrometer have been used to determine the latitude distribution of HCN at 1 mbar by fitting the HCN and CO rotational lines in the 18-60 cm(-1) (160-550 microm) spectral range. Results confirm the north polar HCN enrichment previously observed using mid-IR data and support the conclusion that Titan's nitrile species are significantly more enriched than hydrocarbons species with similar predicted photochemical lifetimes. This suggests Titan's photochemical cycle includes an additional sink for nitrogen bearing species. The abundance of CO was also determined, and had a mean value of 55 +/- 6 ppm at 20 mbar. However, it was not possible to reliably determine the CO latitude variation due to unconstrained temperatures in the north polar lower stratosphere.

Inspection of near-infrared images from Cassini's Imaging Science Subsystem and Visual and Infrared Mapping Spectrometer have revealed a new feature in Titan's haze structure: a narrow band of increased scattering by haze south of the equator. The band seems to indicate a region of very limited mixing in the lower stratosphere, which causes haze particles to be trapped there. This could explain the sharp separation between the two hemispheres, known as the north-south asymmetry, seen in images. The separation of the two hemispheres can also be seen in the stratosphere above 150 km using infrared spectra measured by Cassini's Composite Infrared Spectrometer. Titan's behaviour in the lower tropical stratosphere is remarkably similar to that of the Earth's tropical stratosphere, which hints at possible common dynamical processes. © 2009 Elsevier Inc. International audience; We use Cassini far-infrared limb and nadir spectra, together with recent Huygens results, to shed new light on the controversial far-infrared opacity sources in Titan's troposphere. Although a global cloud of large CH ice particles around an altitude of 30 km, together with an increase in tropospheric haze opacity with respect to the stratosphere, can fit nadir and limb spectra well, this cloud does not seem consistent with shortwave measurements of Titan. Instead, the N-CH collision-induced absorption coefficients are probably underestimated by at least 50% for low temperatures.
