The density of states (DOS) is fundamentally important for understanding physical processes in organic disordered semiconductors, yet hard to determine experimentally. We evaluated the DOS by considering recombination via tail states and using the temperature and open-circuit voltage ($V_\mathrm{oc}$) dependence of the ideality factor in organic solar cells. By performing Suns-$V_\mathrm{oc}$ measurements, we find that gaussian and exponential distributions describe the DOS only at a given quasi-Fermi level splitting. Dissipative Kerr solitons in optical microresonators provide a unifying framework for nonlinear optical physics with photonic-integrated technologies and have recently been employed in a wide range of applications from coherent communications to astrophysical spectrometer calibration. Dissipative Kerr solitons can form a rich variety of stable states, ranging from breathers to multiple-soliton formations, among which, the recently discovered soliton crystals stand out. They represent temporally-ordered ensembles of soliton pulses, which can be regularly arranged by a modulation of the continuous-wave intracavity driving field. To date, however, the dynamics of soliton crystals remains mainly unexplored. Moreover, the vast majority of the reported crystals contained defects - missing or shifted pulses, breaking the symmetry of these states, and no procedure to avoid such defects was suggested. Here we explore the dynamical properties of soliton crystals and discover that often-neglected chaotic operating regimes of the driven optical microresonator are the key to their understanding. In contrast to prior work, we prove the viability of deterministic generation of $\mathrm{perfect}$ soliton crystal states, which correspond to a stable, defect-free lattice of optical pulses inside the cavity. We discover the existence of critical pump power, below which the stochastic process of soliton excitation suddenly becomes deterministic enabling faultless, device-independent access to perfect soliton crystals. Furthermore, we demonstrate the switching of soliton crystal states and prove that it is also tightly linked to the pump power and is only possible in the regime of transient chaos. Finally, we report a number of other dynamical phenomena experimentally observed in soliton crystals including the formation of breathers, transitions between soliton crystals, their melting, and recrystallization.

Spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) is a widely used and minimally invaive technique for bio-medical imaging [1]. SD-OCT typically relies on the use of superluminescent diodes (SLD), which provide a low-noise and broadband optical spectrum. Recent advances in photonic chipscale frequency combs [2, 3] based on soliton formation in photonic integrated microresonators provide an chipscale alternative illumination scheme for SD-OCT. Yet to date, the use of such soliton microcombs in OCT has not yet been analyzed. Here we explore the use of soliton microcombs in spectral domain OCT and show that, by using photonic chipscale Si3N4 resonators in conjunction with 1300 nm pump lasers, spectral bandwidths exceeding those of commercial SLDs are possible. We demonstrate that the soliton states in microresonators exhibit a noise floor that is ca. 3 dB lower than for the SLD at identical power, but can exhibit significantly lower noise performance for powers at the milliWatt level. We perform SD-OCT imaging on an ex vivo fixed mouse brain tissue using the soliton microcomb, alongside an SLD for comparison, and demonstrate the principle viability of soliton based SD-OCT. Importantly, we demonstrate that classical amplitude noise of all soliton comb teeth are correlated, i.e. common mode, in contrast to SLD or incoherent microcomb states [4], which should, in theory, improve the image quality. Moreover, we demonstrate the potential for circular ranging, i.e. optical sub-sampling [5, 6], due to the high coherence and temporal periodicity of the soliton state. Taken together, our work indicates the promising properties of soliton microcombs for SD-OCT.

The generation of dissipative Kerr solitons in optical microresonators has provided a route to compact frequency combs of high repetition rate, which have already been employed for optical frequency synthesizers, ultrafast ranging, coherent telecommunication and dual-comb spectroscopy. Silicon nitride (Si$_3$N$_4$) microresonators are promising for photonic integrated soliton microcombs. Yet to date, soliton formation in Si$_3$N$_4$ microresonators at electronically detectable repetition rates, typically less than 100 GHz, is hindered by the requirement of external power amplifiers, due to the low quality ($Q$) factors, as well as by thermal effects which necessitate the use of frequency agile lasers to access the soliton state. These requirements complicate future photonic integration, heterogeneous or hybrid, of soliton microcomb devices based on Si$_3$N$_4$ microresonators with other active or passive components. Here, using the photonic Damascene reflow process, we demonstrate ultralow-power single soliton formation in high-Q ($Q_0>15\times10^6$) Si$_3$N$_4$ microresonators with 9.8 mW input power (6.2 mW in the waveguide) for devices of electronically detectable, 99 GHz repetition rate. We show that solitons can be accessed via simple, slow laser piezo tuning, in many resonances in the same sample. These power levels are compatible with current silicon-photonics-based lasers for full photonic integration of soliton microcombs, at repetition rates suitable for applications such as ultrafast ranging and coherent communication. Efficient light coupling into integrated photonic devices is of key importance to a wide variety of applications. "Inverse nanotapers" are widely used, in which the waveguide width is reduced to match an incident mode. Here, we demonstrate novel, "double inverse" tapers, in which we taper both the waveguide height, as well as the width. We demonstrate that in comparison to regular inverse tapers, the double inverse tapers have excellent polarization-independent coupling. In addition, the optimum coupling is achieved with much larger taper dimension, enabling the use of photolithography instead of electron beam lithography, relevant for applications at near-IR and visible wavelengths. The low coupling loss makes them particularly suitable for nonlinear photonics, e.g. supercontinuum and soliton micro-comb generation., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures

On-chip optical waveguides with low propagation losses and precisely engineered group velocity dispersion (GVD) are important to nonlinear photonic devices such as soliton microcombs. Yet, despite intensive research efforts, nonlinear integrated photonic platforms still feature propagation losses orders of magnitude higher than in standard optical fiber. The tight confinement and high index contrast of integrated waveguides make them highly susceptible to fabrication induced surface roughness. Therefore, microresonators with ultra-high Q factors are, to date, only attainable in polished bulk crystalline, or chemically etched silica based devices, that pose however challenges for full photonic integration. Here, we demonstrate the fabrication of silicon nitride ($\mathrm{Si_3N_4}$) waveguides with unprecedentedly smooth sidewalls and tight confinement with record low propagation losses. This is achieved by combining the photonic Damascene process with a novel reflow process, which reduces etching roughness, while sufficiently preserving dimensional accuracy. This leads to previously unattainable \emph{mean} microresonator Q factors larger than $5\times10^6$ for tightly confining waveguides with anomalous dispersion. Via systematic process step variation and two independent characterization techniques we differentiate the scattering and absorption loss contributions, and reveal metal impurity related absorption to be an important loss origin. Although such impurities are known to limit optical fibers, this is the first time they are identified, and play a tangible role, in absorption of integrated microresonators. Taken together, our work provides new insights in the origins of propagation losses in $\mathrm{Si_3N_4}$ waveguides and provides the technological basis for integrated nonlinear photonics in the ultra-high Q regime.

Integrated-photonics microchips now enable a range of advanced functionalities for high-coherence applications such as data transmission, highly optimized physical sensors, and harnessing quantum states, but with cost, efficiency, and portability much beyond tabletop experiments. Through high-volume semiconductor processing built around advanced materials there exists an opportunity for integrated devices to impact applications cutting across disciplines of basic science and technology. Here we show how to synthesize the absolute frequency of a lightwave signal, using integrated photonics to implement lasers, system interconnects, and nonlinear frequency comb generation. The laser frequency output of our synthesizer is programmed by a microwave clock across 4 THz near 1550 nm with 1 Hz resolution and traceability to the SI second. This is accomplished with a heterogeneously integrated III/V-Si tunable laser, which is guided by dual dissipative-Kerr-soliton frequency combs fabricated on silicon chips. Through out-of-loop measurements of the phase-coherent, microwave-to-optical link, we verify that the fractional-frequency instability of the integrated photonics synthesizer matches the $7.0*10^{-13}$ reference-clock instability for a 1 second acquisition, and constrain any synthesis error to $7.7*10^{-15}$ while stepping the synthesizer across the telecommunication C band. Any application of an optical frequency source would be enabled by the precision optical synthesis presented here. Building on the ubiquitous capability in the microwave domain, our results demonstrate a first path to synthesis with integrated photonics, leveraging low-cost, low-power, and compact features that will be critical for its widespread use., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures

Light detection and ranging (LIDAR) is critical to many fields in science and industry. Over the last decade, optical frequency combs were shown to offer unique advantages in optical ranging, in particular when it comes to fast distance acquisition with high accuracy. However, current comb-based concepts are not suited for emerging high-volume applications such as drone navigation or autonomous driving. These applications critically rely on LIDAR systems that are not only accurate and fast, but also compact, robust, and amenable to cost-efficient mass-production. Here we show that integrated dissipative Kerr-soliton (DKS) comb sources provide a route to chip-scale LIDAR systems that combine sub-wavelength accuracy and unprecedented acquisition speed with the opportunity to exploit advanced photonic integration concepts for wafer-scale mass production. In our experiments, we use a pair of free-running DKS combs, each providing more than 100 carriers for massively parallel synthetic-wavelength interferometry. We demonstrate dual-comb distance measurements with record-low Allan deviations down to 12 nm at averaging times of 14 $\mu$s as well as ultrafast ranging at unprecedented measurement rates of up to 100 MHz. We prove the viability of our technique by sampling the naturally scattering surface of air-gun projectiles flying at 150 m/s (Mach 0.47). Dissipative Kerr solitons (DKS) in optical microresonators provide a highly miniaturized, chip-scale frequency comb source with unprecedentedly high repetition rates and spectral bandwidth. To date, such soliton frequency comb sources have been successfully applied in the optical telecommunication band for dual comb spectroscopy, coherent telecommunications, counting of optical frequencies and distance measurements. Yet the range of applications could be significantly extended by operating in the near-infrared spectral domain, a prerequisite for biomedical and Raman imaging applications, and a part of the spectrum which hosts commonly used optical atomic transitions. Here we demonstrate the operation of photonic chip-based soliton Kerr combs pumped with 1 micron laser light. By engineering the dispersion properties of a $\rm Si_3N_4$ microring resonator, octave-spanning soliton Kerr combs extending to 776 nm are attained, thereby covering the optical biological imaging window. Moreover, we demonstrate that soliton states can be generated in normal group velocity dispersion regions, when exploiting mode hybridization with other mode families. The reported near-infrared soliton Kerr combs are suitable for a range of studies, including frequency-comb-based optical coherence tomography, coherent anti-Stokes Raman spectro-imaging, and they spectrally overlap with optical atomic transitions in Alkali vapors., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures

Kerr optical frequency combs with multi-gigahertz spacing have previously been demonstrated in chip-scale microresonators, with potential applications in coherent communication, spectroscopy, arbitrary waveform generation, and radio frequency photonic oscillators. In general, the harmonics of a frequency comb are identically polarized in a single microresonator. In this work, we report that one comb in one polarization is generated by an orthogonally polarized soliton comb and two low-noise, orthogonally polarized combs interact with each other and exist simultaneously in a single microresonator. The second comb generation is attributed to the strong cross-phase modulation with the orthogonally polarized soliton comb and the high peak power of the intracavity soliton pulse. Experimental results show that a second frequency comb is excited even when a continuous wave light as a "seed"-with power as low as 0.1 mW-is input, while its own power level is below the threshold of comb generation. Moreover, the second comb has a concave envelope, which is different from the sech2 envelope of the soliton comb. This is due to the frequency mismatch between the harmonics and the resonant frequency. We also find that the repetition rates of these two combs coincide, although two orthogonal resonant modes are characterized by different free spectral ranges.

The observation of temporal dissipative Kerr solitons in optical microresonators provides, on the applied side, compact sources of coherent optical frequency combs that have already been applied in coherent communications, dual comb spectroscopy and metrology. On a fundamental level, it enables the study of soliton physics in driven nonlinear cavities. Microresonators are commonly multimode and, as a result, inter-mode interactions inherently occur among mode families - a condition referred to as "avoided mode crossings". Avoided mode crossings can cause soliton decay, but can also modify the soliton spectrum, leading to e.g. the formation of dispersive wave and inducing a spectral recoil. Yet, to date, the entailing temporal soliton dynamics from inter-mode interactions has rarely been studied, but is critical to understand regimes of soliton-stability. Here we report the discovery of an inter-mode breather soliton. Such breathing dynamics occurs within a laser detuning range where conventionally stationary dissipative solitons are expected. We demonstrate experimentally the phenomenon in two microresonator platforms (crystalline magnesium fluoride and photonic chip-based silicon nitride microresonators), and theoretically describe the dynamics based on a pair of coupled Lugiato-Lefever equations. We demonstrate experimentally that the breathing is associated with a periodic energy exchange between the soliton and another optical mode family. We further show that inter-mode interactions can be modeled by a response function acting on dissipative solitons. The observation of breathing dynamics in the conventionally stable soliton regime is critical to applications, ranging from low-noise microwave generation, frequency synthesis to spectroscopy. On a fundamental level, our results provide new understandings of the rich dissipative soliton dynamics in multimode nonlinear cavities.

Mid-infrared optical frequency combs are of significant interest for molecular spectroscopy due to the large absorption of molecular vibrational modes on one hand, and the ability to implement superior comb-based spectroscopic modalities with increased speed, sensitivity and precision on the other hand. Substantial advances in mid-infrared frequency comb generation have been made in recent years based on nonlinear frequency conversion, microresonator Kerr frequency combs, quantum cascade lasers and mode locking regimes. Here we demonstrate a simple, yet effective method for the direct generation of mid-infrared optical frequency combs in the region from ${2.5-4~\mu{\rm m}}$, i.e. ${2500-4000~{\rm cm}^{-1}}$ covering a large fraction of the functional group region, directly from a conventional and compact erbium-fiber-based femtosecond laser in the telecommunication band (i.e. ${1.55~\mu{\rm m}}$). The wavelength conversion is based on dispersive wave generation within the supercontinuum process in large-cross-section and dispersion-engineered silicon nitride (${\rm Si_3N_4}$) waveguides. The long-wavelength dispersive wave, with its position lithographically determined, performs as a mid-infrared frequency comb, whose coherence is demonstrated via optical heterodyne measurements. Such a simple and versatile approach to mid-infrared frequency comb generation is suitable for spectroscopic applications in the first mid-infrared atmospheric window. Moreover, the compactness and simplicity of the approach have the potential to realize compact dual-comb spectrometers. The generated combs have a fine teeth-spacing, making them also suitable for gas phase analysis.

Octave-spanning, self-referenced frequency combs are applied in diverse fields ranging from precision metrology to astrophysical spectrometer calibration. In the past decade, Kerr frequency comb generators have emerged as alternative scheme offering chip-scale integration, high repetition rate and bandwidths that are only limited by group velocity dispersion. The recent observation of Kerr frequency combs operating in the dissipative Kerr soliton (DKS) regime, along with dispersive wave formation, has provided the means for fully coherent, broadband Kerr frequency comb generation with engineered spectral envelope. Here, by carefully optimizing the photonic Damascene fabrication process, and dispersion engineering of $\mathrm{Si_{3}N_{4}}$ microresonators with $1\,\mathrm{THz}$ free spectral range, we achieve bandwidths exceeding one octave at low powers ($\mathcal{O}(100\,\mathrm{mW})$) for pump lasers residing in the telecom C-band ($1.55\,\mathrm{\mu m}$), as well as for the first time in the O-band ($1.3\,\mathrm{\mu m}$). Equally important, we find that for THz repetition rate comb states, conventional criteria applied to identify DKS comb states fail. Investigating the coherence of generated, octave-spanning Kerr comb states we unambiguously identify DKS states using a response measurement. This allows to demonstrate octave-spanning DKS comb states at both pump laser wavelengths of $1.3\mathrm{\,\mu m}$ and $1.55\,\mathrm{\mu m}$ including the broadest DKS state generated to date, spanning more than $200\,\mathrm{THz}$ of optical bandwidth. Octave spanning DKS frequency combs can form essential building blocks for metrology or spectroscopy, and their operation at $1.3\mathrm{\,\mu m}$ enables applications in life sciences such as Kerr comb based optical coherence tomography or dual comb coherent antistokes Raman scattering.

Integrated waveguides exhibiting efficient second-order nonlinearities are crucial to obtain compact and low power optical signal processing devices. Silicon nitride (SiN) has shown second harmonic generation (SHG) capabilities in resonant structures and single-pass devices leveraging intermodal phase matching, which is defined by waveguide design. Lithium niobate allows compensating for the phase mismatch using periodically poled waveguides, however the latter are not reconfigurable and remain difficult to integrate with SiN or silicon (Si) circuits. Here we show the all-optical enhancement of SHG in SiN waveguides by more than 30 dB. We demonstrate that a Watt-level laser causes a periodic modification of the waveguide second-order susceptibility. The resulting second order nonlinear grating has a periodicity allowing for quasi phase matching (QPM) between the pump and SH mode. Moreover, changing the pump wavelength or polarization updates the period, relaxing phase matching constraints imposed by the waveguide geometry. We show that the grating is long term inscribed in the waveguides, and we estimate a second order nonlinearity of the order of 0.3 pm/V, while a maximum conversion efficiency (CE) of 1.8x10-6 W-1 cm-2 is reached.
