We present a study of the [OIII]5007/[OII]3727 (O32) ratios of star-forming galaxies drawn from MUSE data spanning a redshift range 0.284. Here we aim to understand the properties and the occurrences of galaxies with such high line ratios. Combining data from several MUSE GTO programmes, we select a population of star-forming galaxies with bright emission lines, from which we draw 406 galaxies for our analysis based on their position in the z-dependent star formation rate (SFR) - stellar mass (M*) plane. Out of this sample 15 are identified as extreme oxygen emitters based on their O32 ratios (3.7%) and 104 galaxies have O32>1 (26%). Our analysis shows no significant correlation between M*, SFR, and the distance from the SFR-M* relation with O32. We find a decrease in the fraction of galaxies with O32>1 with increasing M*, however, this is most likely a result of the relationship between O32 and metallicity, rather than between O32 and M*. We draw a comparison sample of local analogues with ~0.03 from SDSS, and find similar incidence rates for this sample. In order to investigate the evolution in the fraction of high O32 emitters with redshift, we bin the sample into three redshift subsamples of equal number, but find no evidence for a dependence on redshift. Furthermore, we compare the observed line ratios with those predicted by nebular models with no LyC escape and find that most of the extreme oxygen emitters can be reproduced by low metallicity models. The remaining galaxies are likely LyC emitter candidates. Finally, based on a comparison between electron temperature estimates from the [OIII4363]/[OIII]5007 ratio of the extreme oxygen emitters and nebular models, we argue that the galaxies with the most extreme O32 ratios have young light-weighted ages., Comment: 17 pages, 23 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

Gas accretion and radial flows are key ingredients of the chemical evolution of spiral galaxies. They are also tightly linked to each other (accretion drives radial flows, due to angular momentum conservation) and should therefore be modelled simultaneously. We summarise an algorithm that can be used to consistently compute accretion profiles, radial flows and abundance gradients under quite general conditions and we describe illustrative applications to the Milky Way. We find that gas-phase abundance gradients strongly depend on the angular momentum of the accreting material and, in the outer regions, they are significantly affected by the choice of boundary conditions., 4 pages, 2 figures. Galaxy formation theory and recent observations indicate that spiral galaxies are surrounded by massive and hot coronae, which potentially constitute a huge source of mass and angular momentum for the star forming discs embedded within them. Accretion from these reservoirs is likely a key ingredient for the evolution of spiral galaxies, but our understanding of the involved processes requires more observational and theoretical investigation, both at global and local scales. In this talk, I focus on some theoretical aspects of the angular momentum distribution of hot coronae. I address, in particular, whether these structures can sustain the inside-out growth of spiral galaxies and what are the dynamical consequences of the accretion of hot coronal gas onto the disc. These processes can have a big impact on observable quantities, most notably gas-phase abundance gradients, which can be used to put constraints on theory. I finally mention ongoing work to understand whether a cosmologically motivated angular momentum distribution for the hot gas is compatible with the constraints from galaxy evolution.

A prediction of the classic active galactic nuclei (AGN) unification model is the presence of ionisation cones with different orientations depending on the AGN type. Confirmations of this model exist for present times, but it is less clear in the early Universe. Here, we use the morphology of giant Ly$\alpha$ nebulae around AGNs at redshift z$\sim$3 to probe AGN emission and therefore the validity of the AGN unification model at this redshift. We compare the spatial morphology of 19 nebulae previously found around type I AGNs with a new sample of 4 Ly$\alpha$ nebulae detected around type II AGNs. Using two independent techniques, we find that nebulae around type II AGNs are more asymmetric than around type I, at least at radial distances $r>30$~physical kpc (pkpc) from the ionizing source. We conclude that the type I and type II AGNs in our sample show evidence of different surrounding ionising geometries. This suggests that the classical AGN unification model is also valid for high-redshift sources. Finally, we discuss how the lack of asymmetry in the inner parts (r$\lesssim$30 pkpc) and the associated high values of the HeII to Ly$\alpha$ ratios in these regions could indicate additional sources of (hard) ionizing radiation originating within or in proximity of the AGN host galaxies. This work demonstrates that the morphologies of giant Ly$\alpha$ nebulae can be used to understand and study the geometry of high redshift AGNs on circum-nuclear scales and it lays the foundation for future studies using much larger statistical samples., Comment: 15 pages, 13 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

The observed properties of the Lyman-$\alpha$ (Ly$\alpha$) emission line are a powerful probe of neutral gas in and around galaxies. We present spatially resolved Ly$\alpha$ spectroscopy with VLT/MUSE targeting VR7, a UV-luminous galaxy at $z=6.532$ with moderate Ly$\alpha$ equivalent width (EW$_0\approx38$ {\AA}). These data are combined with deep resolved [CII]$_{\rm 158 \mu m}$ spectroscopy obtained with ALMA and UV imaging from {\it HST} and we also detect UV continuum with MUSE. Ly$\alpha$ emission is clearly detected with S/N $\approx40$ and FWHM of 374 km s$^{-1}$. Ly$\alpha$ and [CII] are similarly extended beyond the UV, with effective radius r$_{\rm eff} = 2.1\pm0.2$ kpc for a single exponential model or r$_{\rm eff, Ly\alpha, halo} = 3.45^{+1.08}_{-0.87}$ kpc when measured jointly with the UV continuum. The Ly$\alpha$ profile is broader and redshifted with respect to the [CII] line (by 213 km s$^{-1}$), but there are spatial variations that are qualitatively similar in both lines and coincide with resolved UV components. This suggests that the emission originates from two components with plausibly different HI column densities. We place VR7 in the context of other galaxies at similar and lower redshift. The Ly$\alpha$ halo scale length is similar at different redshifts and velocity shifts with respect to the systemic are typically smaller. Overall, we find little indications of a more neutral vicinity at higher redshift. This means that the local ($\sim 10$ kpc) neutral gas conditions that determine the observed Ly$\alpha$ properties in VR7 resemble the conditions in post-re-ionisation galaxies., Comment: 13 pages, 10 figures. Several open questions on galaxy formation and evolution have their roots in the lack of a universal star formation law, that could univocally link the gas properties, e.g. its density, to the star formation rate (SFR) density. In a recent paper, we used a sample of nearby disc galaxies to infer the volumetric star formation (VSF) law, a tight correlation between the gas and the SFR volume densities derived under the assumption of hydrostatic equilibrium for the gas disc. However, due to the dearth of information about the vertical distribution of the SFR in these galaxies, we could not find a unique slope for the VSF law, but two alternative values. In this paper, we use the scale height of the SFR density distribution in our Galaxy adopting classical Cepheids (age$\lesssim 200$ Myr) as tracers of star formation. We show that this latter is fully compatible with the flaring scale height expected from gas in hydrostatic equilibrium. These scale heights allowed us to convert the observed surface densities of gas and SFR into the corresponding volume densities. Our results indicate that the VSF law $\rho_\mathrm{SFR} \propto \rho_\mathrm{gas}^\alpha$ with $\alpha \approx 2$ is valid in the Milky Way as well as in nearby disc galaxies., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures, + 4 pages of Appendix, accepted by A&A

Star formation (SF) laws are fundamental relations between the gas content of a galaxy and its star formation rate (SFR) and play key roles in galaxy evolution models. In this paper, we present new empirical SF laws of disc galaxies based on volume densities. Following the assumption of hydrostatic equilibrium, we calculated the radial growth of the thickness of the gaseous discs in the combined gravitational potential of dark matter, stars, and gas for 12 nearby star-forming galaxies. This allowed us to convert the observed surface densities of gas and SFR into the deprojected volume densities. We found a tight correlation with slope in the range 1.3-1.9 between the volume densities of gas (HI+H$_2$) and the SFR with a significantly smaller scatter than the surface-based (Kennicutt) law and no change in the slope over five orders of magnitude. This indicates that taking into account the radial increase of the thickness of galaxy discs is crucial to reconstruct their three-dimensional density profiles, in particular in their outskirts. Moreover, our result suggests that the break in the slope seen in the Kennicutt law is due to disc flaring rather than to a drop of the SF efficiency at low surface densities. Surprisingly, we discovered an unexpected correlation between the volume densities of HI and SFR, indicating that the atomic gas is a good tracer of the cold star-forming gas, especially in low density HI-dominated environments., 24 pages, 12 figures, accepted by A&A

The well-known quasar SDSS J095253.83+011421.9 (J0952+0114) at z=3.02 has one of the most peculiar spectra discovered so far, showing the presence of narrow Ly$\alpha$ and broad metal emission lines. Although recent studies have suggested that a Proximate Damped Ly$\alpha$ system (PDLA) causes this peculiar spectrum, the origin of the gas associated with the PDLA is unknown. Here we report the results of MUSE observations that reveal a new giant ($\approx$ 100 physical kpc) Lyman $\alpha$ nebula. The detailed analysis of the Ly$\alpha$ velocity, velocity dispersion, and surface brightness profiles suggests that the J0952+0114 Ly$\alpha$ nebula shares similar properties of other QSO nebulae previously detected with MUSE, implying that the PDLA in J0952+0144 is covering only a small fraction of the QSO emission solid angle. We also detected bright and spectrally narrow CIV$\lambda$1550 and HeII$\lambda$1640 extended emission around J0952+0114 with velocity centroids similar to the peak of the extended and central narrow Ly$\alpha$ emission. The presence of a peculiarly bright, unresolved, and relatively broad HeII$\lambda$1640 emission in the central region at exactly the same PDLA redshift hints at the possibility that the PDLA originates in a clumpy outflow with a bulk velocity of about 500 km/s. The smaller velocity dispersion of the large scale Ly$\alpha$ emission suggests that the high-speed outflow is confined to the central region. Lastly, the derived spatially resolved HeII/Ly$\alpha$ and CIV/Ly$\alpha$ maps show a positive gradient with the distance to the QSO hinting at a non-homogeneous ionization parameter distribution., Comment: 17 pages, 13 figures and 2 tables; Accepted for publication in ApJ

We investigate the baryon content of the circumgalactic medium (CGM) within the virial radius of $M_h \sim 10^{12} \; M_\odot$ haloes at z ~ 3, by modelling the surface brightness profile of the giant Ly$\alpha$ nebulae recently discovered by MUSE around bright QSOs at this redshift. We initially assume fluorescent emission from cold photo-ionized gas confined by the pressure of a hot halo. Acceptable CGM baryon fractions (equal or smaller than the cosmological value) require that the cold gas occupies $\lesssim$ 1% of the volume, but is about as massive as the hot gas. CGM baryon fractions as low as 30% of the cosmic value, as predicted by some strongly ejective feedback models at this redshift, are not easy to reconcile with observations, under our assumptions, unless both the QSO-hosting haloes at $z\sim3$ are more massive than recent BOSS estimates based on clustering and the photo-ionized gas is colder than expected in a standard QSO ionizing radiation field. We also consider the option that the emission is dominated by photons scattered from the QSO broad line region. In this scenario, a very stringent lower limit to the baryon fraction can be obtained under the extreme assumption of optically thin scattering. We infer in this case a baryon fraction of at least 70% of the cosmic value, for fiducial parameters. Lower values require halo masses or gas temperatures different than expected, or that some mechanism keeps the cold gas systematically over-pressured with respect to the ambient medium., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. 22 pages, 10 Figures

Cosmic filaments play a crucial role in galaxy evolution transporting gas from the intergalactic medium into galaxies. However, little is known about the efficiency of this process and whether the gas is accreted in a homogenous or clumpy way. Recent observations suggest the presence of broad gas density distributions in the circumgalactic medium which could be related to the accretion of filaments. By means of high-resolution hydrodynamical simulations, we explore here the evolution of cold accreting filaments flowing through the hot circumgalactic medium (CGM) of high-z galaxies. In particular, we examine the nonlinear effects of Kelvin-Helmholtz instability (KHI) on the development of broad gas density distributions and on the formation of cold, dense clumps. We explore a large parameter space in filament and perturbation properties, such as, filament Mach number, initial perturbation wavelength, and thickness of the interface between the filament and the halo. We find that the time averaged density distribution of the cold gas is qualitatively consistent with a skewed log-normal probability distribution function (PDF) plus an additional component in form of a high density tail for high Mach-numbers. Our results suggest a tight correlation between the accreting velocity and the maximum densities developing in the filament which is consistent with the variance-Mach number relation for turbulence. Recent theoretical models suggest that the early phase of galaxy formation could involve an epoch when galaxies are gas-rich but inefficient at forming stars: a "dark galaxy" phase. Here, we report the results of our MUSE (Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer) survey for dark galaxies fluorescently illuminated by quasars at $z>3$. Compared to previous studies which are based on deep narrow-band (NB) imaging, our integral field survey provides a nearly uniform sensitivity coverage over a large volume in redshift space around the quasars as well as full spectral information at each location. Thanks to these unique features, we are able to build control samples at large redshift distances from the quasars using the same data taken under the same conditions. By comparing the rest-frame equivalent width (EW$_{0}$) distributions of the Ly$\alpha$ sources detected in proximity to the quasars and in control samples, we detect a clear correlation between the locations of high EW$_{0}$ objects and the quasars. This correlation is not seen in other properties such as Ly$\alpha$ luminosities or volume overdensities, suggesting the possible fluorescent nature of at least some of these objects. Among these, we find 6 sources without continuum counterparts and EW$_{0}$ limits larger than $240\,\mathrm{\AA}$ that are the best candidates for dark galaxies in our survey at $z>3.5$. The volume densities and properties, including inferred gas masses and star formation efficiencies, of these dark galaxy candidates are similar to previously detected candidates at $z\approx2.4$ in NB surveys. Moreover, if the most distant of these are fluorescently illuminated by the quasar, our results also provide a lower limit of $t=60$ Myr on the quasar lifetime., Comment: 28 pages, 13 figures, 5 tables, submitted to ApJ

The intensity of the Cosmic UV background (UVB), coming from all sources of ionising photons such as star-forming galaxies and quasars, determines the thermal evolution and ionization state of the intergalactic medium (IGM) and is, therefore, a critical ingredient for models of cosmic structure formation. Most of the previous estimates are based on the comparison between observed and simulated Lyman-$\alpha$ forest. We present the results of an independent method to constrain the product of the UVB photoionisation rate and the covering fraction of Lyman limit systems (LLSs) by searching for the fluorescent Lyman-$\alpha$ emission produced by self-shielded clouds. Because the expected surface brightness is well below current sensitivity limits for direct imaging, we developed a new method based on three-dimensional stacking of the IGM around Lyman-$\alpha$ emitting galaxies (LAEs) between 2.93 that are consistent with previous measurements, with a preference for relatively low UVB intensities at z=3, and which suggest a non-monotonic decrease of $\Gamma$HI with increasing redshift between 3, Comment: 19 pages, 17 figures, accepted on MNRAS
