2. Investigating the Sets of Values That Community Members Hold toward Local Nature Centers

Abstract

While nature center's missions often point to connecting people to nature in various ways, their potential to provide a broader array of services to their communities remains largely unexplored. To better understand the values local community members hold for nature centers, we conducted survey research around 16 centers in the United States. Exploratory factor analysis identified four underlying values: environmental connection, leisure provision, community resilience, and civic engagement. Our limited sample of community respondents felt these values to be important and well-provided by local centers, suggesting centers may play broader roles in communities than inferred from their mission statements. The identification of these distinct value sets provides centers with food for thought regarding not only the services they provide, but also how they might communicate their roles to various constituencies in their communities. The values also provide clear conceptual categories for future research on the values of diverse community institutions.

Abstract

Aims To examine how often general practitioners (GPs) and practice nurses (PNs) working in primary care discuss alcohol with patients, what factors prompt discussions, how they approach patient discussions and whether the Chief Medical Officers' (CMO) revised low-risk drinking guidelines are appropriately advised. Methods Cross-sectional survey with GPs and PNs working in primary care in the UK, conducted January–March 2017 (n  = 2020). A vignette exercise examined what factors would prompt a discussion about alcohol, whether they would discuss before or after a patient reported exceeded the revised CMO guidelines (14 units per week) and whether the CMO drinking guidelines were appropriately advised. For all patients, participants were asked how often they discussed alcohol and how they approached the discussion (e.g. used screening tool). Results The most common prompts to discuss alcohol in the vignette exercise were physical cues (44.7% of participants) or alcohol-related symptoms (23.8%). Most practitioners (70.1%) said they would wait until a patient was exceeding CMO guidelines before instigating discussion. Two-fifths (38.1%) appropriately advised the CMO guidelines in the vignette exercise, with PNs less likely to do so than GPs (odds ratio [OR] = 0.77, P  = 0.03). Less than half (44.7%) reportedly asked about alcohol always/often with all patients, with PNs more likely to ask always/often than GPs (OR = 2.22, P  < 0.001). Almost three-quarters said they would enquire by asking about units (70.3%), compared to using screening tools. Conclusion Further research is required to identify mechanisms to increase the frequency of discussions about alcohol and appropriate recommendation of the CMO drinking guidelines to patients. Abstract

Background Foods high in fat, sugar and salt (HFSS) are known to contribute to overweight and obesity. In addition to overweight and obesity, smoking, alcohol consumption and physical inactivity are known risk factors for non-communicable diseases, including several cancers and cardiovascular disease. Methods Secondary analysis of UK-representative cross-sectional survey data of 3293 adults aged 18+. Regression analyses were undertaken to understand the relationship between consumption of HFSS food and soft drinks, alcohol and tobacco and socio-demographics. Clustering analysis identified groupings of health risk factors. Results Males, those aged 18–24 and those from the more deprived groups consumed ready meals and fast food most frequently. Most of the sample (77.3%) engaged in at least one health risk behaviour. Six clusters were identified in the clustering analysis. Older (65+) female respondents were more likely to be inactive. Smokers exhibiting additional risk behaviours were more likely to be of working age from more deprived groups, and men over 65 were more likely to consume harmful levels of alcohol with additional risk factors. Conclusion Policies and services in the UK tend to focus on changing behaviour to address individual risk factors. This study shows that policies and interventions need to address multiple risk factors.

The purpose of this paper is to show the practical application of computational methods to price options. Emphasis is especially given to the use of the Longstaff-Schwartz method for pricing American and exotic options. An implementation of these pricing methods in a computer program are demonstrated. The advantages of using object-oriented programming design patterns to make pricing programs more flexible and useful is also discussed.

Abstract

Quantifying civil engineering projects in terms of sustainability and meeting carbon dioxide reduction targets is a new challenge for the civil engineering industry. While the development of carbon accounting tools has helped to identify areas of bridge design and construction which have the greatest carbon dioxide emissions, quantifying sustainability overall has been less well studied. The sustainability index for bridges described in this paper is a significant step towards facilitating systematic quantification of the sustainability of schemes through a simple, graphical tool. The output identifies where improvements can be made on a design and allows comparison of alternatives. It can be used throughout the design process to monitor decisions, the success of design changes and to inform decisions on future projects, thereby improving the sustainability of designs. The overall sustainability index rating enables targets to be set for the desired sustainability performance of bridges produced by an organisation. The methodology can be adopted by clients so that, once the key attributes are set and weighted accordingly, designs can be benchmarked across their whole bridge stock. 49. Behaviorally mediated contacts between scent organs: Another prerequisite for pheromone production in Danaus chrysippus males (lepidoptera).

Abstract

Males of Danaus butterflies possess two binate glandular organs: abdominal hairpencils, which release aphrodisiac pheromones during courtship behavior, and pockets on the hindwings. Between these two types of organs contacts are established behaviorally: the hairpencils are dipped into the alar pockets (Fig. 2). GLC analyses of hairpencil and wing pocket extracts from Danaus chrysippus show that this contact behavior is a prerequisite for the synthesis of the ketonic pheromone component (for which the term 'danaidone' is suggested here) in physiologically normal amounts. Danaidone occurs on the hairpencils only i) after the males have ingested pyrrolizidine alkaloids as precursors, and ii) after the hairpencils have been dipped into the wing pockets. The appearance of danaidone in the wing pockets also depends on the ingestion of alkaloidal precursor, but is not affected by the above mentioned contact behavior. Mechanisms by which contact behavior might control pheromone biosynthesis are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
