1. Resolving ECRH deposition broadening due to edge turbulence in DIII-D by heat deposition measurement

Abstract

Interaction between microwave power, used for local heating and mode control, and density fluctuations can produce a broadening of the injected beam, as confirmed in experiment and simulation. Increased power deposition width could impact suppression of tearing mode structures on ITER. This work discusses the experimental portion of an effort to understand scattering of injected microwaves by turbulence on the DIII-D tokamak. The corresponding theoretical modeling work can be found in M.B. Thomas et. al.: Submitted to Nuclear Fusion (2017)[Author Note - this paper to be published in same journal]. In a set of perturbative heat transport experiments, tokamak edge millimeter-scale fluctuation levels and microwave heat deposition are measured simultaneously. Beam broadening is separated from heat transport through fitting of modulated fluxes. Electron temperature measurements from a 500 kHz, 48-channel ECE radiometer are Fourier analyzed and used to calculate a deposition-dependent flux. Consistency of this flux with a transport model is evaluated. A diffusive and convective transport solution is linearized and compared with energy conservation-derived fluxes. Comparison between these two forms of heat flux is used to evaluate the quality of ECRF deposition profiles, and fitting finds a significant broadening of 1D equilibrium ray tracing calculations from the benchmarked TORAY-GA ray tracing code is needed. The physical basis, cross-validation, and application of the heat flux method is presented. The method is applied to a range of DIII-D discharges and finds a broadening factor of the deposition profile width which scales linearly with edge density fluctuation level. 3. Electron cyclotron heating can drastically alter reversed shear Alfvén eigenmode activity in DIII-D through finite pressure effects

Abstract

A recent DIII-D experiment investigating the impact of electron cyclotron heating (ECH) on neutral beam driven reversed shear Alfvén eigenmode (RSAE) activity is presented. The experiment includes variations of ECH injection location and timing, current ramp rate, beam injection geometry (on/off-axis), and neutral beam power. Essentially all variations carried out in this experiment were observed to change the impact of ECH on AE activity significantly. In some cases, RSAEs were observed to be enhanced with ECH near the off-axis minimum in magnetic safety factor (), in contrast to the original DIII-D experiments where the modes were absent when ECH was deposited near . It is found that during intervals when the geodesic acoustic mode (GAM) frequency at is elevated and the calculated RSAE minimum frequency, including contributions from thermal plasma gradients, is very near or above the nominal TAE frequency (f TAE), RSAE activity is not observed or RSAEs with a much reduced frequency sweep range are found. This condition is primarily brought about by ECH modification of the local electron temperature (T e) which can raise both the local T e at as well as its gradient. A q-evolution model that incorporates this reduction in RSAE frequency sweep range is in agreement with the observed spectra and appears to capture the relative balance of TAE or RSAE-like modes throughout the current ramp phase of over 38 DIII-D discharges. Detailed ideal MHD calculations using the NOVA code show both modification of plasma pressure and pressure gradient at play an important role in modifying the RSAE activity. Analysis of the ECH injection near the case where no frequency sweeping RSAEs are observed shows the typical RSAE is no longer an eigenmode of the system. What remains is an eigenmode with poloidal harmonic content reminiscent of the standard RSAE, but absent of the typical frequency sweeping behavior. The remaining eigenmode is also often strongly coupled to gap TAEs. Analysis with the non-perturbative gyro fluid code TAEFL confirms this change in RSAE activity and also shows a large drop in the resultant mode growth rates.

Abstract

The path to fusion in the United States requires partnership between public and private sector. While the private sector provides the vigor to take some of the major steps necessary, there is a depth of expertise and capability in the public sector that is vital to resolving feasible approaches. As an open national user facility, DIII-D provides a crucial testbed to develop the required new technologies and approaches in relevant conditions. It has unparalleled potential to meet this challenge, thanks to its extreme flexibility and world leading diagnostics. This provides a basis to rapidly develop solutions that project to future reactors with confidence. The program has thus been redeveloped to enable public and private sector engagement and testing of new concepts. A new technology program has been launched to resolve plasma interacting technologies. With modest heating upgrades, the facility can confront the crucial "Integrated Tokamak Exhaust and Performance" gap, to resolve core, exhaust and technology solutions together. The device is also being redeveloped as a training facility, with dedicated student run time, a mentorship program, and open access to all opportunity roles, part of wider efforts to diversify and open pathways through inclusion, access, and equity. This exciting agenda is enabling scientists and technology researchers to pioneer the solutions needed for a Fusion Pilot Plant (FPP) and ITER this decade. As a national user facility, DIII D has singular potential to provide the tools, teams, and insight necessary, to do its part in moving the United States rapidly toward the commercialization of fusion energy. Abstract

High power helicon waves (whistler or very high harmonic fast lower hybrid waves) at a frequency of 476 MHz are being tested for efficient off-axis current drive on DIII-D with the goal of demonstrating profile control in AT plasmas [1-4]. In agreement with earlier theoretical predictions, strong Parametric Decay Instability (PDI) has been observed at injected RF power levels in the range of 0.05-0.5 MW with corresponding electric fields of 10-30 kV/m [5,6]. The dominant driver of the PDI is the E×B and the polarization drift velocity which can drive ion cyclotron quasi-modes and lower hybrid (or IBW) sideband waves unstable [5,6]. Initial experimental results have been obtained with powers up to 0.3 MW showing evidence of strong PDI measured with high-frequency one-turn magnetic probes located at both the outboard and the inboard wall at frequencies set by the usual selection rules [7,8]. Here we review the appropriate analytic formulation to predict such instabilities and present numerical evaluation of frequencies and growth rates relevant to DIII-D plasma parameters. Abstract

Introduction: Climate factors influence the state of human health and wellbeing. Climate-related threats are particularly being experienced by vulnerable populations in Africa. A Question (Q)-Storming session was convened at an international climate adaptation conference. It promoted dialog among a diverse spectrum of researchers, climate and medical scientists, health professionals, national government officials, civil society, business, and international governing organizations. The session identified approaches for the effective integration of health within African national climate adaptation policies. Materials and methods: Two organizations partnered to convene the session at the Adaptations Futures 2018 Conference in Cape Town. Q-storming (which is an inverse approach to brainstorming) was applied to extract ideas from all participants. Four topics were presented during the session: (i) adaptive capacities related to climate change and infectious diseases; (ii) adaptive capacity of African governments in relation to health and climate change; (iii) making climate science work to protect the health of vulnerable populations; and (iv) making climate-health research usable. Results: Nine cross-cutting adaptation themes were generated (i.e. key definitions, adaptive capacity, health sector priorities, resources, operational capacities and procedures, contextual conditions, information pathways, and information utility). The Q-Storming approach was a valuable tool for improving the understanding of the complexities of climate-health research collaborations, and priority identification for improved adaptation and service delivery. Conclusion: Concerted recognition regarding difficulties in linking climate science and health vulnerability at the interface of practitioners and decision-makers is required, for better integration and use of climate-health research in climate adaptation in Africa. This can be achieved by innovations offered through Q-Storming.

Abstract

Recent results from the DIII-D tokamak have provided significant contributions to the understanding of many of the elements of tokamak physics and the application of this understanding to the design of next generation devices including ITER and CIT. The limitations of magnetohydrodynamic stability on the values of plasma beta (the ratio of kinetic pressure to the containing pressure of the magnetic field) that can be attained has been experimentally demonstrated and found to be described by existing theory. Values of beta (10.7%) well in excess of those required for proposed devices (ITER and CIT) have been demonstrated. Regimes of confinement (H-mode) have been established that scale favorably to proposed next generation devices, and experiments demonstrating the dependence of the energy confinement on plasma size have been completed. Understanding of confinement is rapidly developing especially in the areas of bulk transport and the role of turbulence in the plasma edge. Key experimental results in areas of plasma transport and edge plasma phenomena are in agreement with theories based on short wavelength turbulence. Control of the divertor heat loads and impurity influx has been demonstrated, and new progress has been made in the understanding of plasma edge phenomena. Experiments with ion Bernstein wave heating have not found regimes in which these waves can produce effective central ion heating. Electron cyclotron current drive experiments have demonstrated 70 kA of driven current in 400 kA discharges.

The main aim of this study was to examine the predictive utility of DESR in moderating the course of ADHD children into adolescence.Methods: Subjects comprised 177 children with and 204 children without ADHD followed for an average of 4 years (aged 6–18 years at baseline, 54% male). Subjects were assessed with structured diagnostic interviews and measures of psychosocial functioning. DESR was defined by the presence (n = 79) or absence (n = 98) of Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL)-DESR profile (score ≥ 180 < 210 total of Attention, Aggression, and Anxious/Depressed subscales) at the baseline assessment.Results: Of subjects with DESR at baseline, 57% had DESR at follow-up. Persistent ADHD was significantly associated with DESR at follow-up (χ2(1) = 15.37, P < 0.001). At follow-up, ADHD + DESR subjects had significantly more comorbidities (z = 2.55, P = 0.01), a higher prevalence of oppositional defiant disorder (z = 3.01, P = 0.003), and more impaired CBCL social problems t-score (t(227) = 2.41, P = 0.02) versus ADHD subjects.Conclusion: This work suggests that a positive CBCL-DESR profile predicts subsequent psychopathology and functional impairments in children with ADHD suggesting that it has the potential to help identify children with ADHD at high risk for compromised outcomes.Keywords: attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, emotion, regulation, longitudinal, youth

Abstract

This work provides a first experimental measurement of broadened ECH deposition on the DIIID tokamak. As seen in theory[1] and simulation[2], refraction by edge density fluctuations shifts the path of RF waves, altering ECH and ECCD deposition. This paper reports on an initial experimental confirmation of broadened ECH deposition on DIII-D tokamak. Te measurements from a 48 channel 2nd Harmonic ECE Radiometer digitized at 500 kHz are used with a set of broadened trial ECH deposition functions to calculate time-dependent, modulation-induced heat fluxes. The fitting of convective and diffusive transport to these fluxes allows different ECH deposition profiles to be compared. The best-fit ECH deposition produces reasonable transport coefficients which compare favorably with simulation. This method is applied to a set of L- and H- mode DIII-D discharges. Accounting for diffusive, convective, and coupled transport, the ECH deposition profile is found to be 2 to 3 times wider than predicted by TORAY-GA ray tracing.

Abstract

The design, manufacture and concepts behind a modular diode-pump source for lasers based on microchannel cooling technology are presented. The proposed pump packages were developed for direct high power pumping of slab lasers. They were tested for performance and efficiency on a neodymium-doped ytrrium aluminum garnet slab laser using a 20% subset of the 80 pump diode packages. It yielded 70 W of average power at 100 microsecond pulsewidths.

Abstract

We discuss three methods for avoiding or minimizing sawteeth (ST) in DIII-D. Two methods rely on relatively benign internal 3D perturbations to redistribute poloidal flux, causing the minimum safety factor (qmin) to stay above unity and thus avoiding sawteeth. The hybrid scenario on DIII-D requires the presence of an internal tearing mode (usually 3/2) for the "flux pumping", i.e. anomalous broadening of the current profile. During stationary intervals in hybrid discharges, the rate of poloidal magnetic energy consumption is more than the rate of energy flow from the poloidal field coils. DIII-D discharges with a helical core induced by imposed rotating n=1 3D fields have a similar anomalous consumption of poloidal flux. A possible origin of the behavior in the hybrid scenario is that the 3/2 tearing mode and its 2/2 side band produce helical perturbations in the core velocity similar to that from the imposed n=1 magnetic field. These perturbations in each case produce a dynamo EMF that drives the current redistribution. The third approach is to apply electron cyclotron current drive just inside q=1 to reduce ST amplitude and increase ST frequency, keeping q on axis closer to one and thereby providing smaller seeds for NTMs.
