The 2016 MW 7.8 Kaikōura Earthquake nucleated on The Humps fault, which ruptured across the Emu Plain in North Canterbury. The paleoearthquake history of the fault was poorly constrained prior to the 2016 earthquake. To determine the timing and single-event displacements (SED) of earthquakes on the fault we use Optically Stimulated Luminescence (OSL) and radiocarbon dates of faulted stratigraphy and analysis of faulting (i.e. geometry and slip) at the McLean-1 trench site. At the trench the fault trace trends east–west and primarily accommodated right-lateral strike-slip in 2016 (2 ± 0.2 m strike slip and 0.35 ± 0.05 m vertical slip northside downthrow). The Humps fault is more seismically active than previously thought and accrued slip during at least six surface rupturing paleoearthquakes. The timing of these earthquakes was: 9.8–15.3 ka BP (Event 1), 8.6–11.5 ka BP (Event 2), 8.1–10.9 ka BP (Event 3), 6.0–8.6 ka BP (Event 4), 1840 AD to 4.5 ka (Event 5), and 2016 AD (Event 6). These earthquakes have a mean recurrence interval of 1.8–3.4 kyr and could have recurrence intervals up to ~9 kyr. The Fiji archipelago lies along a complex active section of the Pacific and Australian plate boundary zone in the SW Pacific. The availability of a range of remotely sensed imagery and recent field studies have permitted the exploration of the link between lineaments as seen on such imagery and tectonic fractures observed on the ground in SE Viti Levu, the main island of Fiji. Comparisons of statistical orientation peaks as well as the spatial extent of lineaments with field-mapped fractures indicate that the lineaments are largely a reflection of tectonic fractures in the bedrock emphasized on the surface by topography, drainage, and vegetation. Surface lineaments correspond to broad zones of intense fracturing and strongly influence the landform features of the area. It appears that surface fracture sets are open-upward splay zones that merge downward into single planar discontinuities, represented by sparse uninterrupted magnetic lineaments at depth. Fault-correlated lineament sets extend over greater geographical distances than the equivalent mapped fault zones, and these lineament sets represent more complex regional structural patterns than previously known. This study provides an approach to mapping fracture patterns where outcrop is limited and where conventional field-mapping techniques of structural geology are impractical. It highlights the benefits of mapping lineaments from multiple sets of remote-sensing imagery of the surface and bedrock, mapping them at regional and larger scales, as well as linking lineaments to detailed field-mapped structures. Lineament data derived using such an approach can be used effectively to characterize regional structural patterns, which in turn may provide better understanding of the structural and tectonic evolution and seismic hazards of the region. Hanmer basin (10 X 20 km), located in northern South Island, New Zealand, is evolving where two major segments of the dextral strike-slip Hope fault are projected to converge across a 6- to 7-km-wide releasing step-over. The structural geometry and development of Hanmer basin does not conform to traditional pull-apart basin models. The respective fault segments do not overlap but are indirectly linked along the southwest margin of the basin by an oblique normal fault. The Hope River segment terminates in an array of oblique normal faults along the northwestern basin range front, and east-west-striking normal faults on the west Hanmer Plain. Faulted Holocene alluvial-fan surfaces indicate west Hanmer basin is actively subsiding and evolving under north-south extension. The Conway segment along the southeastern margin of the basin terminates in a complex series of active fault traces, small pop-up ridges, and graben depressions. Early basin-fill sediments of Pleistocene age are being folded, elevated, and dissected as the eastern part of Hanmer basin is progressively inverted and destroyed by north-south contraction. The north margin of the basin is defined by a series of topographic steps caused by normal faulting outside of the area of the releasing step-over. These normal faults we interpret to reflect large-scale upper crustal collapse of the hanging-wall side of the Hope fault. New seismic reflection data and geologic mapping reveal a persistent longitudinal and lateral asymmetry to basin development. Four seismic stratigraphic sequences identified in the eastern sector of the basin thicken and are tilted southward, with in-sequence lateral onlaps occurring to the north and east, and also onto basement near the fault-controlled basin margins. Quantifying how hillslopes respond to river incision and climate change is fundamental to understanding the evolution of uplifting landscapes during glacial-interglacial cycles. We investigated the interplay among uplift, river incision, and hillslope response in the nonglacial Waipaoa River catchment located in the exhumed inner forearc of an active subduction margin on the East Coast of the North Island of New Zealand. New high-resolution topographic data sets (light detection and ranging [lidar] and photo-grammetry) combined with field mapping and tephrochronology indicate that hillslopes adjusted to rapid latest Pleistocene and Holocene river incision through the initiation and reactivation of deep-seated landslides. In the erodible marine sedimentary rocks of the Waipaoa sedimentary system, postincision deep-seated landslides can occupy over 30% of the surface area. The ages of tephra cover beds identified by electron microprobe analysis on 80 tephra samples from 173 soil test pits and 64 soil auger sites show that 4000-5000 yr after the initiation of river incision, widespread hillslope adjustment started between the deposition of the ca. 14,000 cal. yr B.P. Waiohau Tephra and the ca. 9420 cal. yr B.P. Rotoma Tephra. Tephrochronology and geomorphic mapping analysis indicate that river incision and deep-seated landslide slope adjustment were synchronous between main-stem rivers and headwater tributaries. Hillslope response in the catchment can include the entire slope, measured from river to ridgeline, and, in some cases, the interfluves between incising subcatchments have been dramatically modified through ridgeline retreat and/or lowering. Using the results of our landform tephrochronology and geomorphic mapping, we derive a conceptual time series of hillslope response to uplift and climate change-induced river incision over the last glacial-interglacial cycle. A team of earthquake geologists, seismologists, and engineering seismologists has collectively produced an update of the national probabilistic seismic hazard (PSH) model for New Zealand (National Seismic Hazard Model, or NSHM). The new NSHM supersedes the earlier NSHM published in 2002 and used as the hazard basis for the New Zealand Loadings Standard and numerous other end-user applications. The new NSHM incorporates a fault source model that has been updated with over 200 new onshore and offshore fault sources and utilizes new New Zealand-based and international scaling relationships for the parameterization of the faults. The distributed seismicity model has also been updated to include post-1997 seismicity data, a new seismicity regionalization, and improved methodology for calculation of the seismicity parameters. Probabilistic seismic hazard maps produced from the new NSHM show a similar pattern of hazard to the earlier model at the national scale, but there are some significant reductions and increases in hazard at the regional scale. The national-scale differences between the new and earlier NSHM appear less than those seen between much earlier national models, indicating that some degree of consistency has been achieved in the national-scale pattern of hazard estimates, at least for return periods of 475 years and greater.
