Berezin and Weyl quantizations are renown procedures for mapping classical, commutative Poisson algebras of observables to their non-commutative, quantum counterparts. The latter map is famous for its use on Weyl algebras, while the former is more appropriate for continuous functions decaying at infinity. In this work we define a variant of Berezin quantization map, which operates on classical Weyl algebras $\mathcal{W}(E,0)$ and constitutes a positive \textit{strict deformation quantization}. We use this map to compare classical and quantum thermal equilibrium states for a boson gas and to compute its rigorous classical limit. For this scope, we first define a purely algebraic notion of KMS states for the classical Weyl algebra and verify that in the finite volume setting there is only one possible KMS state, which can be interpreted as the Fourier transform of a Gibbs measure on some Hilbert space. Then, we show how the classical KMS states have thermodynamic limits which can manifest condensation in the zero mode, similarly to what happens in the standard Bose-Einstein condensation. Lastly, we prove that there exist sequences of quantum KMS states for the infinite volume Bose gas, that converge weakly$^*$ to classical KMS states. Moreover, since the different thermal phases are preserved by this limit, it is shown that a quantum condensate is mapped to a classical one., Comment: 46 pages

Two-dimensional crystals stack together through weak van der Waals (vdW) forces, offering unlimited possibilities to play with layer number, order and twist angle in vdW heterostructures (HSs). The realisation of high-performance optoelectronic devices, however, requires the achievement of specific band alignments, $k$-space matching between conduction band minima and valence band maxima, as well as efficient charge transfer between the constituent layers. Fine tuning mechanisms to design ideal HSs are lacking. Here, we show that layer-selective strain engineering can be exploited as an extra degree of freedom in vdW HSs to tailor their band alignment and optical properties. To that end, strain is selectively applied to MS$_2$ (M=Mo,W) monolayers in InSe/MS$_2$ HSs. This triggers a giant PL enhancement of the highly tuneable but weakly emitting InSe by one to three orders of magnitude. Resonant PL excitation measurements, supported by first-principle calculations, provide evidence of a strain-activated direct charge transfer from the MS$_2$ MLs toward InSe. This significant emission enhancement achieved for InSe widens its range of applications for optoelectronics.

We study the classical and quantum KMS conditions within the context of spin lattice systems. Specifically, we define a strict deformation quantization (SDQ) for a $\mathbb{S}^2$-valued spin lattice system over $\mathbb{Z}^d$ generalizing the renown Berezin SDQ for a single sphere. This allows to promote a classical dynamics on the algebra of classical observables to a quantum dynamics on the algebra of quantum observables. We then compare the notion of classical and quantum thermal equilibrium by showing that any weak*-limit point of a sequence of quantum KMS states fulfils the classical KMS condition. In short, this proves that the semiclassical limit of quantum thermal states describes classical thermal equilibrium, strenghtening the physical interpretation of the classical KMS condition. Finally we provide two sufficient conditions ensuring uniqueness of classical and quantum KMS states: The latter are based on an version of the Kirkwood-Salzburg equations adapted to the system of interest. As a consequence we identify a mild condition which ensures uniqueness of classical KMS states and of quantum KMS states for the quantized dynamics for a common sufficiently high temperature., Comment: 45 pages

In this work, we present the design and manufacturing of the two multi-mode antenna arrays of the COSMO experiment and the preliminary beam pattern measurements of their fundamental mode compared with simulations. COSMO is a cryogenic Martin-Puplett Fourier Transform Spectrometer that aims at measuring the isotropic y-type spectral distortion of the Cosmic Microwave Background from Antarctica, by performing differential measurements between the sky and an internal, cryogenic reference blackbody. To reduce the atmospheric contribution, a spinning wedge mirror performs fast sky-dips at varying elevations while fast, low-noise Kinetic Inductance detectors scan the interferogram. Two arrays of antennas couple the radiation to the detectors. Each array consists of nine smooth-walled multi-mode feed-horns, operating in the $120-180$ GHz and $210-300$ GHz range, respectively. The multi-mode propagation helps increase the instrumental sensitivity without employing large focal planes with hundreds of detectors. The two arrays have a step-linear and a linear profile, respectively, and are obtained by superimposing aluminum plates made with CNC milling. The simulated multi-mode beam pattern has a $\sim 20^{\circ} - 26^{\circ}$ FWHM for the low-frequency array and $\sim 16^{\circ}$ FWHM for the high-frequency one. The side lobes are below $-15$ dB. To characterize the antenna response, we measured the beam pattern of the fundamental mode using a Vector Network Analyzer, in far-field conditions inside an anechoic chamber at room temperature. We completed the measurements of the low-frequency array and found a good agreement with the simulations. We also identified a few non-idealities that we attribute to the measuring setup and will further investigate. OLIMPO is a proposed Antarctic balloon-borne Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect (SZE) imager to study gas dynamics associated with structure formation along with the properties of the warm-hot intergalactic medium (WHIM) residing in the connective filaments. During a 25 day flight OLIMPO will image a total of 10 z~0.05 galaxy clusters and 8 bridges at 145, 250, 365, and 460 GHz at an angular resolution of 1.0'-3.3'. The maps will be significantly deeper than those planned from CMB-S4 and CCAT-P, and will have excellent fidelity to the large angular scales of our low-z targets, which are difficult to probe from the ground. In combination with X-ray data from eROSITA and XRISM we will transform our current static view of galaxy clusters into a full dynamic picture by measuring the internal intra-cluster medium (ICM) velocity structure with the kinematic SZE, X-ray spectroscopy, and the power spectrum of ICM fluctuations. Radio observations from ASKAP and MeerKAT will be used to better understand the connection between ICM turbulence and shocks with the relativistic plasma. Beyond the cluster boundary, we will combine thermal SZE maps from OLIMPO with X-ray imaging from eROSITA to measure the thermodynamics of the WHIM residing in filaments, providing a better understanding of its properties and its contribution to the total baryon budget., Comment: From the proceedings of the mm Universe 2023

There have been some interesting recent advances in understanding the notion of mechanical disorder in structural glasses and the statistical mechanics of these systems' low-energy excitations. Here we contribute to these advances by studying a minimal model for structural glasses' elasticity in which the degree of mechanical disorder -- as characterized by recently introduced dimensionless quantifiers -- is readily tunable over a very large range. We comprehensively investigate a number of scaling laws observed for various macro-, meso- and microscopic elastic properties, and rationalize them using scaling arguments. Interestingly, we demonstrate that the model features the universal quartic glassy vibrational density of states as seen in many atomistic and molecular models of structural glasses formed by cooling a melt. The emergence of this universal glassy spectrum highlights the role of self-organization (towards mechanical equilibrium) in its formation, and elucidates why models featuring structural frustration alone do not feature the same universal glassy spectrum. Finally, we discuss relations to existing work in the context of strain-stiffening of elastic networks and of low-energy excitations in structural glasses, in addition to future research directions., Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures

Galaxy clusters and surrounding medium, can be studied using X-ray bremsstrahlung emission and Sunyaev Zel'dovich (SZ) effect. Both astrophysical probes, sample the same environment with different parameters dependance. The SZ effect is relatively more sensitive in low density environments and thus is useful to study the filamentary structures of the cosmic web. In addition, observations of the matter distribution require high angular resolution in order to be able to map the matter distribution within and around galaxy clusters. MISTRAL is a camera working at 90GHz which, once coupled to the Sardinia Radio Telescope, can reach $12''$ angular resolution over $4'$ field of view (f.o.v.). The forecasted sensitivity is $NEFD \simeq 10-15mJy \sqrt{s}$ and the mapping speed is $MS= 380'^{2}/mJy^{2}/h$. Moir\'{e} excitons (MXs) are electron-hole pairs localised by the periodic (moir\'{e}) potential forming in two-dimensional heterostructures (HSs). MXs can be exploited, $e.g.$, for creating nanoscale-ordered quantum emitters and achieving or probing strongly correlated electronic phases at relatively high temperatures. Here, we studied the exciton properties of a WSe$_2$/MoSe$_2$ HS from $T$=6 K to room temperature using time-resolved and continuous-wave micro-photoluminescence, also under magnetic field. The exciton dynamics and emission lineshape evolution with temperature show clear signatures that MXs de-trap from the moir\'{e} potential and turn into free interlayer excitons (IXs) at $T\gtrsim$120 K. The MX-to-IX transition is also apparent from the exciton magnetic moment reversing its sign when the moir\'{e} potential is not capable to localise excitons at elevated temperatures. Concomitantly, the exciton formation and decay times reduce drastically. Thus, our findings establish the conditions for a truly confined nature of the exciton states in a moir\'{e} superlattice with increasing temperature.

We implemented radio frequency-assisted electrostatic force microscopy (RF-EFM) to investigate the electric field response of biaxially strained molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) monolayers (MLs) in the form of mesoscopic bubbles, produced via hydrogen (H)-ion irradiation of the bulk crystal. MoS2 ML, a semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenide, has recently attracted significant attention due to its promising optoelectronic properties, further tunable by strain. Here, we take advantage of the RF excitation to distinguish the intrinsic quantum capacitance of the strained ML from that due to atomic scale defects, presumably sulfur vacancies or H-passivated sulfur vacancies. In fact, at frequencies fRF larger than the inverse defect trapping time, the defect contribution to the total capacitance and to transport is negligible. Using RF-EFM at fRF = 300 MHz, we visualize simultaneously the bubble topography and its quantum capacitance. Our finite-frequency capacitance imaging technique is non-invasive and nanoscale, and can contribute to the investigation of time and spatial-dependent phenomena, such as the electron compressibility in quantum materials, which are difficult to measure by other methods.

We report an infrared ellipsometry study of the charge carrier dynamics in polycrystalline Kxp-terphenyl samples with nominal $x=3$, for which signatures of high-temperature superconductivity were previously reported. The infrared spectra are dominated by two Lorentzian bands with maxima around 4 000 cm$^{-1}$ and 12 000 cm$^{-1}$ which, from a comparison with calculations based on a H\"uckel model are assigned to intra-molecular excitations of $\pi$ electrons of the anionic p-terphenyl molecules. The inter-molecular electronic excitations are much weaker and give rise to a Drude peak and a similarly weak Lorentzian band around 220 cm$^{-1}$. A dc resistivity of about 0.3 $\Omega$ cm at 300 K is deduced from the IR data, comparable to values measured by electrical resistivity on a twin sample. The analysis of the temperature dependence of the low-frequency response reveals a gradual decrease of the plasma frequency and the scattering rate of the Drude peak below 300 K that gets anomalously enhanced below 90 K. The corresponding missing spectral weight of the Drude peak appears blue-shifted towards the Lorentz-band at 220 cm$^{-1}$. This characteristic blue-shift signifies an enhanced localization of the charge carriers at low temperatures and contrasts the behavior expected for a bulk superconducting state for which the missing spectral weight would be redshifted to a delta-function at zero frequency that accounts for the loss-free response of the superconducting condensate. Our data might still be compatible with a filamentary superconducting state with a volume fraction well below the percolation limit for which the spatial confinement of the condensate can result in a plasmonic resonance at finite frequency., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures

A quantum-light source that delivers photons with a high brightness and a high degree of entanglement is fundamental for the development of efficient entanglement-based quantum-key distribution systems. Among all possible candidates, epitaxial quantum dots are currently emerging as one of the brightest sources of highly entangled photons. However, the optimization of both brightness and entanglement currently requires different technologies that are difficult to combine in a scalable manner. In this work, we overcome this challenge by developing a novel device consisting of a quantum dot embedded in a circular Bragg resonator, in turn, integrated onto a micromachined piezoelectric actuator. The resonator engineers the light-matter interaction to empower extraction efficiencies up to 0.69(4). Simultaneously, the actuator manipulates strain fields that tune the quantum dot for the generation of entangled photons with corrected fidelities to a maximally entangled state up to 0.96(1). This hybrid technology has the potential to overcome the limitations of the key rates that plague QD-based entangled sources for entanglement-based quantum key distribution and entanglement-based quantum networks.

We introduce BULLKID, an innovative phonon detector consisting of an array of dices acting as particle absorbers sensed by multiplexed Kinetic Inductance Detectors (KIDs). The dices are carved in a thick crystalline wafer and form a monolithic structure. The carvings leave a thin common disk intact in the wafer, acting both as holder for the dices and as substrate for the KID lithography. The prototype presented consists of an array of 64 dices of 5.4x5.4x5 mm$^3$ carved in a 3" diameter, 5 mm thick silicon wafer, with a common disk 0.5 mm thick hosting a 60 nm patterned aluminum layer. The resulting array is highly segmented but avoids the use of dedicated holding structures for each unit. Despite the fact that the uniformity of the KID electrical response across the array needs optimization, the operation of 8 units with similar features shows, on average, a baseline energy resolution of $26\pm7$ eV. This makes it a suitable detector for low-energy processes such as direct interactions of dark matter and coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering.

The possibility of almost linear tuning of the band gap and of the electrical and optical properties in monolayers (MLs) of semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenide (S-TMD) alloys opens up the way to fabricate materials with on-demand characteristics. By making use of photoluminescence spectroscopy, we investigate optical properties of WSSe MLs with a S/Se ratio of 57/43 deposited on SiO$_2$/Si substrate and encapsulated in hexagonal BN flakes. Similarly to the $"parent"$ WS$_2$ and WSe$_2$ MLs, we assign the WSSe MLs to the ML family with the dark ground exciton state. We find that, in addition to the neutral bright A exciton line, three observed emission lines are associated with negatively charged excitons. The application of in-plane and out-of-plane magnetic fields allows us to assign undeniably the bright and dark (spin- and momentum-forbidden) negative trions as well as the phonon replica of the dark spin-forbidden complex. Furthermore, the existence of the single photon emitters in the WSSe ML is also demonstrated, thus prompting the opportunity to enlarge the wavelength range for potential future quantum applications of S-TMDs., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures, +ESI

The MIllimeter Sardinia radio Telescope Receiver based on Array of Lumped elements kids, MISTRAL, is a millimetric ($\simeq 90GHz$) multipixel camera being built for the Sardinia Radio Telescope. It is going to be a facility instrument and will sample the sky with 12 arcsec angular resolution, 4 arcmin field of view, through 408 Kinetic Inductance Detectors (KIDs). The construction and the beginning of commissioning is planned to be in 2022. MISTRAL will allow the scientific community to propose a wide variety of scientific cases including protoplanetary discs study, star forming regions, galaxies radial profiles, and high angular resolution measurements of the Sunyaev Zel'dovich (SZ) effect with the investigation of the morphology of galaxy cluster and the search for the Cosmic Web., Comment: 18 pages, 6 figure, accepted for pubblication in the International Journal of Modern Physics D

We have developed two arrays of lumped element kinetic inductance detectors working in the D-band, and optimised for the low radiative background conditions of a satellite mission aiming at precision measurements of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB). The first detector array is sensitive to the total power of the incoming radiation to which is coupled via single-mode waveguides and corrugated feed-horns, while the second is sensitive to the polarisation of the radiation thanks to orthomode transducers. Here, we focus on the total power detector array, which is suitable, for instance, for precision measurements of unpolarised spectral distortions of the CMB, where detecting both polarisations provides a sensitivity advantage. We describe the optimisation of the array design, fabrication and packaging, the dark and optical characterisation, and the performance of the black-body calibrator used for the optical tests. We show that almost all the detectors of the array are photon-noise limited under the radiative background of a 3.6 K black-body. This result, combined with the weak sensitivity to cosmic rays hits demonstrated with the OLIMPO flight, validates the idea of using lumped elements kinetic inductance detectors for precision, space-based CMB missions., Comment: To be submitted to JCAP

The COSmic Monopole Observer (COSMO) is an experiment to measure low-level spectral distortions in the isotropic component of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB). Deviations from a pure blackbody spectrum are expected at low level ($<$ 1 ppm) due to several astrophysical and cosmological phenomena, and promise to provide important independent information on the early and late phases of the universe. They have not been detected yet, due to the extreme accuracy required, the best upper limits being still those from the COBE-FIRAS mission. COSMO is based on a cryogenic differential Fourier Transform Spectrometer, measuring the spectral brightness difference between the sky and an accurate cryogenic blackbody. The first implementation of COSMO, funded by the Italian PRIN and PNRA programs, will operate from the Concordia station at Dome-C, in Antarctica, and will take advantage of a fast sky-dip technique to get rid of atmospheric emission and its fluctuations, separating them from the monopole component of the sky brightness. Here we describe the instrument design, its capabilities, the current status. Road roughness is a very important road condition for the infrastructure, as the roughness affects both the safety and ride comfort of passengers. The roads deteriorate over time which means the road roughness must be continuously monitored in order to have an accurate understand of the condition of the road infrastructure. In this paper, we propose a machine learning pipeline for road roughness prediction using the vertical acceleration of the car and the car speed. We compared well-known supervised machine learning models such as linear regression, naive Bayes, k-nearest neighbor, random forest, support vector machine, and the multi-layer perceptron neural network. The models are trained on an optimally selected set of features computed in the temporal and statistical domain. The results demonstrate that machine learning methods can accurately predict road roughness, using the recordings of the cost approachable in-vehicle sensors installed in conventional passenger cars. Our findings demonstrate that the technology is well suited to meet future pavement condition monitoring, by enabling continuous monitoring of a wide road network.

The next generation of bolometric experiments searching for rave events, in particular for the neutrino-less double beta decay, needs fast, high-sensitivity and easy-to-scale cryogenic light detectors. The CALDER project (2014-2020) developed a new technology for light detection at cryogenic temperature. In this paper we describe the achievements and the final prototype of this project, consisting of a $5\times5$ cm$^2$, 650 $\mu$m thick silicon substrate coupled to a single kinetic inductance detector made of a three-layer aluminum-titanium-aluminum. The baseline energy resolution is 34$\pm$1(stat)$\pm$2(syst) eV RMS and the response time is 120 $\mu$s. These features, along with the natural multiplexing capability of kinetic inductance detectors, meet the requirements of future large-scale experiments., Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures

Preliminary evidence for the occurrence of high-Tc superconductivity in alkali-doped organic materials, such as potassium-doped p-terphenyl (KPT), were recently obtained by magnetic susceptibility measurements and by the opening of a large superconducting gap as measured by ARPES and STM techniques. In this work, KPT samples have been synthesized by a chemical method and characterized by low-temperature Raman scattering and resistivity measurements. Here, we report the occurrence of a resistivity drop of more than 4 orders of magnitude at low temperatures in KPT samples in the form of compressed powder. This fact was interpreted as a possible sign of a broad superconducting transition taking place below 90 K in granular KPT. The granular nature of the KPT system appears to be also related to the 20 K broadening of the resistivity drop around the critical temperature., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures

Hydrogenation of nitrogen (N) doped GaAs allows for reversible tuning of the bandgap and the creation of site controlled quantum dots through the manipulation of N-nH complexes, N-nH complexes, wherein a nitrogen atom is surrounded by n hydrogen (H) atoms. Here we employ cross-sectional scanning tunneling microscopy (X-STM) to study these complexes in the GaAs (110) surface at the atomic scale. In addition to that we performed density functional theory (DFT) calculations to determine the atomic properties of the N-nH complexes. We argue that at or near the (110) GaAs surface two H atoms from N-nH complexes dissociate as an H$_2$ molecule. We observe multiple features related to the hydrogenation process, of which a subset is classified as N-1H complexes. These N-1H related features show an apparent reduction of the local density of states (LDOS), characteristic to N atoms in the GaAs (110) surface with an additional apparent localized enhancement of the LDOS located in one of three crystal directions. N-nH features can be manipulated with the STM tip. Showing in one case a switching behavior between two mirror-symmetric states and in another case a removal of the localized enhancement of the LDOS. The disappearance of the bright contrast is most likely a signature of the removal of an H atom from the N-nH complex., Comment: 11 pages, 12 figures

We present the design, manufacturing, and testing of a 37-element array of corrugated feedhorns for Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) measurements between $140$ and $170$ GHz. The array was designed to be coupled to Kinetic Inductance Detector arrays, either directly (for total power measurements) or through an orthomode transducer (for polarization measurements). We manufactured the array in platelets by chemically etching aluminum plates of $0.3$ mm and $0.4$ mm thickness. The process is fast, low-cost, scalable, and yields high-performance antennas compared to other techniques in the same frequency range. Room temperature electromagnetic measurements show excellent repeatability with an average cross polarization level about $-20$ dB, return loss about $-25$ dB, first sidelobes below $-25$ dB and far sidelobes below $-35$ dB. Our results qualify this process as a valid candidate for state-of-the-art CMB experiments, where large detector arrays with high sensitivity and polarization purity are of paramount importance in the quest for the discovery of CMB polarization $B$-modes.

As quantum coherence times of superconducting circuits have increased from nanoseconds to hundreds of microseconds, they are currently one of the leading platforms for quantum information processing. However, coherence needs to further improve by orders of magnitude to reduce the prohibitive hardware overhead of current error correction schemes. Reaching this goal hinges on reducing the density of broken Cooper pairs, so-called quasiparticles. Here, we show that environmental radioactivity is a significant source of nonequilibrium quasiparticles. Moreover, ionizing radiation introduces time-correlated quasiparticle bursts in resonators on the same chip, further complicating quantum error correction. Operating in a deep-underground lead-shielded cryostat decreases the quasiparticle burst rate by a factor fifty and reduces dissipation up to a factor four, showcasing the importance of radiation abatement in future solid-state quantum hardware.

The realization of ordered strain fields in two-dimensional crystals is an intriguing perspective in many respects, including the instauration of novel transport regimes and the achievement of enhanced device performances. In this work, we demonstrate the possibility to subject micrometric regions of atomically-thin molybdenum disulphide (MoS2) to giant strains with the desired ordering. Mechanically-deformed MoS2 membranes can be obtained by proton-irradiation of bulk flakes, leading to the formation of monolayer domes containing pressurized hydrogen. By pre-patterning the flakes via deposition of polymeric masks and electron beam lithography, we show that it is possible not only to control the size and position of the domes, but also to create a mechanical constraint. Atomic force microscopy measurements reveal that this constraint alters remarkably the morphology of the domes, otherwise subject to universal scaling laws. Upon the optimization of the irradiation and patterning processes, unprecedented periodic configurations of large strain gradients -- estimated by numerical simulations -- are created, with the highest strains being close to the rupture critical values (> 10 %). The creation of such high strains is confirmed by Raman experiments. The method proposed here represents an important step towards the strain engineering of two-dimensional crystals.

We describe the in-flight performance of the horn-coupled Lumped Element Kinetic Inductance Detector arrays of the balloon-borne OLIMPO experiment. These arrays have been designed to match the spectral bands of OLIMPO: 150, 250, 350, and 460 GHz, and they have been operated at 0.3 K and at an altitude of 37.8 km during the stratospheric flight of the OLIMPO payload, in Summer 2018. During the first hours of flight, we tuned the detectors and verified their large dynamics under the radiative background variations due to elevation increase of the telescope and to the insertion of the plug-in room-temperature differential Fourier transform spectrometer into the optical chain. We have found that the detector noise equivalent powers are close to be photon-noise limited and lower than those measured on the ground. Moreover, the data contamination due to primary cosmic rays hitting the arrays is less than 3% for all the pixels of all the arrays, and less than 1% for most of the pixels. These results can be considered the first step of KID technology validation in a representative space environment.

We report a strain-induced direct-to-indirect band gap transition in mechanically deformed WS2 monolayers (MLs). The necessary amount of strain is attained by proton irradiation of bulk WS2 and the ensuing formation of one-ML-thick, H2-filled domes. The electronic properties of the curved MLs are mapped by spatially- and time-resolved micro-photoluminescence revealing the mechanical stress conditions that trigger the variation of the band gap character. This general phenomenon, also observed in MoS2 and WSe2, further increases our understanding of the electronic structure of transition metal dichalcogenide MLs and holds a great relevance for their optoelectronic applications.
