Abstract

Superconducting qubits can be sensitive to abrupt energy deposits caused by cosmic rays and ambient radioactivity. Previous studies have focused on understanding possible correlated effects over time and distance due to cosmic rays. In this study, for the first time, we directly compare the response of a transmon qubit measured initially at the Fermilab SQMS above-ground facilities and then at the deep underground Gran Sasso Laboratory (INFN-LNGS, Italy). We observe same average qubit lifetime T$_1$ of roughly 80 microseconds at above and underground facilities. We then apply a fast decay detection protocol and investigate the time structure, sensitivity and relative rates of triggered events due to radiation versus intrinsic noise, comparing above and underground performance of several high-coherence qubits. Using gamma sources of variable activity we calibrate the response of the qubit to different levels of radiation in an environment with minimal background radiation. Results indicate that qubits respond to a strong gamma source and it is possible to detect particle impacts. However, when comparing above and underground results, we do not observe a difference in radiation induced-like events for these sapphire and niobium-based transmon qubits. We conclude that the majority of these events are not radiation related and to be attributed to other noise sources which by far dominate single qubit errors in modern transmon qubits., Comment: 9+7 pages, 7+5 figures

Abstract

The MEG experiment took data at the Paul Scherrer Institute in the years 2009--2013 to test the violation of the lepton flavour conservation law, which originates from an accidental symmetry that the Standard Model of elementary particle physics has, and published the most stringent limit on the charged lepton flavour violating decay ${\mu}^+ \rightarrow {\rm e}^+ \gamma$: BR(${\mu}^+ \rightarrow {\rm e}^+ \gamma$) $<4.2 \times 10^{-13}$ at 90% confidence level. The MEG detector has been upgraded in order to reach a sensitivity of $6\times10^{-14}$. The basic principle of MEG II is to achieve the highest possible sensitivity using the full muon beam intensity at the Paul Scherrer Institute ($7\times10^{7}$ muons/s) with an upgraded detector. The main improvements are better rate capability of all sub-detectors and improved resolutions while keeping the same detector concept. Abstract

The next generation of bolometric experiments searching for rave events, in particular for the neutrino-less double beta decay, needs fast, high-sensitivity and easy-to-scale cryogenic light detectors. The CALDER project (2014-2020) developed a new technology for light detection at cryogenic temperature. In this paper we describe the achievements and the final prototype of this project, consisting of a $5\times5$ cm$^2$, 650 $\mu$m thick silicon substrate coupled to a single kinetic inductance detector made of a three-layer aluminum-titanium-aluminum. The baseline energy resolution is 34$\pm$1(stat)$\pm$2(syst) eV RMS and the response time is 120 $\mu$s. Abstract

The Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events (CUORE) is the first bolometric experiment searching for neutrinoless double beta decay that has been able to reach the 1-ton scale. The detector consists of an array of 988 TeO 2 crystals arranged in a cylindrical compact structure of 19 towers, each of them made of 52 crystals. The construction of the experiment was completed in August 2016 and the data taking started in spring 2017 after a period of commissioning and tests. In this work we present the neutrinoless double beta decay results of CUORE from examining a total TeO 2 exposure of 86.3 kg yr, characterized by an effective energy resolution of 7.7 keV FWHM and a background in the region of interest of 0.014 counts/(keV kg yr). In this physics run, CUORE placed a lower limit on the decay half-life of neutrinoless double beta decay of 130 Te ≤ 1.3 · 10 25 yr (90% C.L.). Moreover, an analysis of the background of the experiment is presented as well as the measurement of the 130 Te 2vββ decay with a resulting half-life of T 2v1/2 = [7.9 ± 0.1 (stat.) ± 0.2 (syst.)] x 10 20 yr which is the most precise measurement of the half-life and compatible with previous results.

Abstract

Cryogenic single-particle detectors are devices, operated close to absolute zero, widely used in current and future generation detectors for the search for rare particle physics processes, for example neutrino-less double beta decay. Traditionally, these detectors are assembled in copper structures inside dilution refrigerators. The use of copper, however, is expected to become a limiting factor on the path towards the background reduction needed for future generation projects. Its high density and large Z make it an effective target where gamma-rays produced by radioactive contaminants can lose part of their energy undetected, and subsequently be measured as sensitivity-spoiling spurious signals in the region of interest of the energy spectrum. We present here a new method of building assemblies for kg-scale cryogenic single particle detectors based on low Z, low density additive manufacturing-compatible polymers that can in the future be doped with scintillating compounds thus making them an active component of the experimental setup. Additive manufacturing overcomes the limitations, imposed by traditional techniques, in the design of the structures. The assembly geometry can therefore be driven by the combined needs for reduction of mass and optimization of light production and collection. The experimental setup and the performance of the detectors in terms of energy resolution and temperature stability are described.

13. The CMS ECAL Enfourneur: A Gigantic Machine with a Soft Touch

Abstract

The electromagnetic calorimeter (ECAL) of the CMS experiment at the LHC is composed of 75848 scintillating lead tungstate crystals arranged in a barrel section and two endcaps. The barrel part is made of 36 supermodules (SM), 2.7 tons each, and is installed inside the CMS magnet. There are 18 SMs on each side of CMS, with each SM containing 1700 crystals. During Long Shutdown 3, all ECAL SMs must be extracted to refurbish the electronics in preparation for HL-LHC. A dedicated machine called the "Enfourneur" is used to extract and re-insert the SMs inside CMS, with a required accuracy of about 1mm. In order to speed up the extraction and insertion process, two Enfourneurs will be employed, operating in parallel on both sides. In view of the purchase of the second Enfourneur, the design has been improved, starting from the feedback of past operations. The improvements to the new Enfourneur design include increased space for the operators, optimization of the operations and the controls with the use of electric motors, and an updated alignment system. Abstract

The Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events (CUORE) is the first bolometric experiment searching for neutrinoless double beta decay that has been able to reach the 1-ton scale. The detector consists of an array of 988 TeO[subscript 2] crystals arranged in a cylindrical compact structure of 19 towers, each of them made of 52 crystals. The construction of the experiment was completed in August 2016 and the data taking started in spring 2017 after a period of commissioning and tests. In this work we present the neutrinoless double beta decay results of CUORE from examining a total TeO[subscript 2] exposure of 86.3kgyr , characterized by an effective energy resolution of 7.7 keV FWHM and a background in the region of interest of 0.014 counts/(keVkgyr) . In this physics run, CUORE placed a lower limit on the decay half-life of neutrinoless double beta decay of 130Te>1.3⋅1025 yr (90% C.L.). Moreover, an analysis of the background of the experiment is presented as well as the measurement of the 130 Te 2 νββ decay with a resulting half-life of T2ν1/2=[7.9±0.1(stat.)±0.2(syst.)]×1020 yr which is the most precise measurement of the half-life and compatible with previous results. ©2019 Keywords: neutrinoless double beta decay; CUORE; Majorana Neutrino, National Science Foundation (grant nos. Abstract

The National Laboratories of Frascati (LNF) are the first Italian research facility for the study of nuclear and subnuclear physics with accelerators and are the largest laboratories of the Italian National Institute for Nuclear Physics (INFN), the public body whose mission is theoretical, experimental and technological research in subnuclear, nuclear and astroparticle physics. LNF have an extensive experience in designing, installation, testing and operation of particle accelerators and the related technologies. The competences range over almost all the technologies related to particle accelerators, including radio frequency, vacuum, magnets and mechanics. LNF have always had a close relationship with the regional and national industries, stimulating the development and growth of the industrial background by means of close collaboration with partners. The LATINO (a Laboratory in Advanced Technologies for INnOvation) project is an initiative that fits into this path and aims to strengthen this relationship, allowing access to the technologies, instruments and competences not otherwise available to the enterprises. A modern vision of advanced economies recommends the Technology Transfer from the research world to the productive activities through the creation of research infrastructures as the most efficient system for generating innovation and economic development [1-3]. Abstract

Optical Transition Radiation (OTR) screen represents the most appropriate instrument to measure and verify the characteristics of a beam spot size produced by a particle accelerator. In order to measure such beam properties, OTR screens have to sustain thermal and mechanical stresses due to the energy that several bunches deposit. Owing to these requirements, it is essential to identify the more suitable material to optimize the OTR dimensions and to get reliable measures from the diagnostic system. In this paper, we describe a numerical procedure to choose the most performing material taking into account the physical requirements of a multi-bunch high brightness. The procedure is based on a dedicated ANSYS script able to evaluate the fatigue life time of the material considering a high number of thermal cycles generated by several bunches. The main characteristic of this script is the capability to simulate the real thermal and mechanical effect on the target that the hitting particle beam produces. The numerical procedure has been applied to compare the performance of three relevant materials-Aluminium, Silicon and Graphite simulating a beam hitting with well-known parameters., Proceedings of the 10th Int. 18. LATINO: A Laboratory in Advanced Technologies for Innovation

Abstract

LATINO (a Laboratory in Advanced Technologies for INnOvation) is an open Research Infrastructure that will be hosted at the Frascati National Laboratories (LNF) of the Italian National Institute for Nuclear Physics (INFN). LATINO will allow the scientific community and the SMEs to get access to the technologies and competences developed for particle accelerators. The Infrastructure will be organized in four Laboratories: Radio Frequency, Vacuum and Thermal Treatments, Magnetic Measurements, Mechanical Integration. The list of the available instruments will include, besides others, a high power X-Band station to test cavities up to 50 Hz repetition rate and 200 MW input power, a network analyser to characterize microwave devices up to 100 GHz, a ultra high vacuum oven for thermal treatments and brazing, an outgassing measurement system to characterize vacuum materials, a stretched wire bench and a rotating coil for the magnetic field measurements of multipoles, environment and laser scanners. The regional and national industrial background comprises a remarkable number of highly qualified small and medium enterprises that could take advantage of the technologies offered by LATINO infrastructure to develop novel products within the Key Enabling Technologies and to get the access to new market segments. Abstract

The Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events (CUORE) is the first bolometric experiment searching for neutrinoless double beta decay that has been able to reach the 1-ton scale. The detector consists of an array of 988 TeO2 crystals arranged in a cylindrical compact structure of 19 towers, each of them made of 52 crystals. The construction of the experiment was completed in August 2016 and the data taking started in spring 2017 after a period of commissioning and tests. In this work we present the neutrinoless double beta decay results of CUORE from examining a total TeO2 exposure of 86.3kg yr, characterized by an effective energy resolution of 7.7 keV FWHM and a background in the region of interest of 0.014 counts/ (keV kg yr). In this physics run, CUORE placed a lower limit on the decay half- life of neutrinoless double beta decay of 130Te > 1.3.1025 yr (90% C. L.). Moreover, an analysis of the background of the experiment is presented as well as the measurement of the 130Te 2vo3p decay with a resulting half- life of T2 2. [7.9 :- 0.1 (stat.) :- 0.2 (syst.)] x 10(20) yr which is the most precise measurement of the half- life and compatible with previous results

Abstract

CUPID-0 is the first large array of scintillating Zn82Se cryogenic calorimeters (bolometers) implementing particle identification for the search of the neutrinoless double beta decay (0). The detector consists of 24 enriched Zn82Se bolometers for a total 82Se mass of 5.28 kg and it has been taking data in the underground LNGS (Italy) since March 2017. In this article we show how the dual read-out provides a powerful tool for the particles rejection. The simultaneous use of the heat and light information allows us to reduce the background down to (3.2-1.1+1.3)x10-3counts/(keV kg year), an unprecedented level for cryogenic calorimeters. In a total exposure of 5.46 kg year Zn82Se we set the most stringent limit on the 0 decay 82Se half-life T1/20>4.0x1024 year at 90% C.I

Abstract

CUPID-0 is the first large mass experiment based on cryogenic calorimeters (bolometers) that implements the dual read-out of light and heat for background rejection. The detector, consisting of 24 enriched Zn82Se crystals (5.28 kg of 82Se), is taking data in the underground LNGS (Italy) from March 2017. In this contribution we present the analysis that allowed to set the most stringent limit on the half-life of neutrino-less double beta decay of 82Se. We prove that the particle identification, enabled by the simultaneous read-out of heat and light, provides an unprecedented background level for cryogenic calorimeters of few 103 counts/keV/kg/y. Finally, we discuss the impact of these results on next generation projects.

Abstract

High gradient RF photoguns have been a key development to enable several applications of high quality electron beams. They allow the generation of beams with very high peak current and low transverse emittance, satisfying the tight demands for free-electron lasers, energy recovery Linacs, Compton/Thomson Sources and high-energy linear colliders. A new fabrication technique for this type of structures has been recently developed and implemented at the Laboratories of the National Institute of Nuclear physics in Frascati (LNF-INFN, Italy). It is based on the use of special RF-vacuum gaskets that allow avoiding brazing in the realization process. The S-band gun of the Compton-based ELI-NP gamma beam system (GBS) has been fabricated with this new technique. It operates at 100 Hz with 120 MV/m cathode peak field and long RF pulses to allow the 32 bunch generation foreseen for the GBS. High gradient tests have been performed at full power full repetition rate and have shown the extremely good performances of the structure in term of breakdown rates. Abstract

A high brightness electron Linac is being built in the Compton Gamma Source at the ELI Nuclear Physics facility in Romania. To achieve the design luminosity, a train of 32 bunches, 16 ns spaced, with a nominal charge of 250 pC will collide with the laser beam in two interaction points. Electron beam spot size is measured with optical transition radiation (OTR) profile monitors. In order to measure the beam properties, the OTR screens must sustain the thermal and mechanical stress due to the energy deposited by the bunches. This paper is an ANSYS study of the issues due to the high energy transferred to the OTR screens. Thermal multicycle analysis will be shown; each analysis will be followed by a structural analysis in order to investigate the performance of the material. The multiphysics analysis will be extended to the mechanical contact areas with the target frame in order to evaluate the order of magnitude of the phenomena in those regions., Proceedings of the 8th Int. Abstract

Recently, a new technique for the realization of high gradient accelerating structures based on the use of gaskets without brazing processes, has been successfully tested at high power on a 1.6 cells RF gun (D. Alesini, et al, PRST 18, 02001, 2015). The new technique developed at the Laboratories of Frascati of the INFN (Italy) in the framework of the SPARC_LAB project has been also adopted for the ELI-NP RF gun. The use of the special gaskets that simultaneously guarantee the vacuum seal and a perfect RF contact allow to avoid the brazing process, strongly reducing the cost, the realization time and the risk of failure. Moreover, without copper annealing due to the brazing process, it is possible, in principle, to decrease the breakdown rate increasing, at the same time, the maximum achievable gradient. The extension of this new fabrication process to complex LINAC structures is the next step on the application of this new technique on particle accelerator. Abstract

CUORE-0 is a cryogenic detector that uses an array of tellurium dioxide bolometers to search for neutrinoless double-beta decay of ^{130}Te. We present the first data analysis with 7.1 kg y of total TeO_2 exposure focusing on background measurements and energy resolution. The background rates in the neutrinoless double-beta decay region of interest (2.47 to 2.57 MeV) and in the {\alpha} background-dominated region (2.70 to 3.90 MeV) have been measured to be 0.071 \pm 0.011 and 0.019 \pm 0.002 counts/keV/kg/y, respectively. The latter result represents a factor of 6 improvement from a predecessor experiment, Cuoricino. The results verify our understanding of the background sources in CUORE-0, which is the basis of extrapolations to the full CUORE detector. The obtained energy resolution (full width at half maximum) in the region of interest is 5.7 keV. Based on the measured background rate and energy resolution in the region of interest, CUORE-0 half-life sensitivity is expected to surpass the observed lower bound of Cuoricino with one year of live time., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, version 2 as published in Eur. Abstract

The linac energy booster of the European ELI-NP proposal foresees the use of 12 traveling wave C-Band structures, 1.8 m long with a field phase advance per cell of 2pi/3 and a repetition rate of 100 Hz. Because of the multi-bunch operation, the structures have been designed with a damping of the HOM dipoles modes in order to avoid beam break-up (BBU). They are quasi-constant gradient structures with symmetric inputs couplers and a strong damping of the HOM in each cell. An optimization of the electromagnetic and mechanical design has been done to simplify the fabrication and to reduce their cost. In the paper we shortly review the whole design criteria and we illustrate the low and high power RF test results on prototypes that shown the feasibility of the structure realization and the effectiveness of the HOM damping., Proceedings of the 5th Int. Abstract

The room temperature RF structures in the ELI-NP Linac will operate in multi-bunch with high repetition rate (100 Hz). For these reasons they are subject to some kW of power dissipated on the internal cavities surfaces. The resulting thermal deformation of the cavities shapes could imply variations in their electromagnetic fields. To limit these effects and optimize the cooling design, a fully coupled ElectroMagnetic- Thermal-Mechanical analysis has been performed on the S-Band Radiofrequency Gun and on the C-Band multi-cell structures. 36. Cuore Experiment: Towers' 'Construction System

Abstract

CUORE experiment, predicted to be installed at "Gran Sasso" National Lab, consists in a detector placed inside a large cryostat. This detector is composed by 1000 very pure crystals, organized in a 20 copper towers system. The main problem of this assembly, is to integrate these towers, keeping a radioactively pure environment around crystals and copper frames, in order to don't compromise the detector functionality. This job describes how has been decided to proceed, in the LNGS clean room, for the tower's assembly.

Abstract

The Side Coupled Drift Tube Linac (SCDTL) is a 3 GHz accelerating structure for proton therapy linac designed for TOP-IMPLART, an Intensity Modulated Proton Linear Accelerator for Radio-Therapy. The structure is made up of short DTL accelerating tanks for low current proton beams, coupled by side coupling cavities. The purpose of this paper is to report on the analysis of electromagnetic and the thermo-mechanical behavior for the SCDTL structure. The 3D electromagnetic analysis is used to derive the power dissipation on the structure; then one can infer the temperature distribution and deformation field in order to eventually evaluate their feedback on the electromagnetic properties of the structure as, for instance, the cavity resonant frequency shift. Such a "multi-physics'' analysis has been performed for different supporting stem geometries in order to optimize the shunt impedance and the R/Q for SCDTL cavities., Proceedings of the 5th Int. The ELI-NP GBS is a high intensity and monochromatic gamma source under construction in Magurele (Romania). Abstract

The ELI-NP C-Band structures are 1.8 m long travelling wave accelerating structures, quasi-constant gradient, with a field phase advance per cell of 2pi/3. They operate at a repetition rate of 100 Hz and, because of the multi-bunch operation, they have been designed with a dipole HOM damping system to avoid beam break-up (BBU). The structures have symmetric input and output couplers and integrate, in each cell, a waveguide HOM damping systems with silicon carbide RF absorbers. An optimization of the electromagnetic and mechanical design has been done to simplify the fabrication and to reduce their cost. After the first full scale prototype successfully tested at the nominal gradient of 33 MV/m, the production of the twelve structures started. The ELI-GBS aims to produce high quality gamma beam through Compton Backscattering. A train of 32 bunches at 100Hz with a nominal charge of 250pC is accelerated up to 740 MeV. Two interaction points with an IR Laser beam produces the gamma beam at two different energies. In order to measure the electron beam spot size and the beam properties, the LINAC is equipped with several optical transition radiation (OTR) profile monitors. Those OTR screens must sustain the thermal and mechanical stress due to the energy deposited by the bunches. We present a numerical (ANSYS) study of the thermo-mechanical issues due to beam energy deposition in the screens; our analysis will cover both the steady state and transient regime., Proceedings of the 5th Int.
