2. "Getting together to play football" : a participatory action research study with the Positive Mental Attitude Sports Academy

Abstract

People with experience of mental distress have been identified as being less likely to participate in sport, in comparison to people in other groups characterised by an ongoing health or disability issue. Meanwhile, discourses about the positive effects of engaging in sport and physical activity dominate sport and health policy. Furthermore, there have been calls for alternative approaches to conventional mental health treatment, such as sport and physical activity, to be researched. Understanding how such participation might be best organised, to maximise engagement and the associated benefits, is currently poorly understood. This thesis is concerned with a collaborative study with the Positive Mental Attitude (PMA) Sports Academy, a community project that utilised football as a therapeutic tool to enable people with experience of mental distress to participate and achieve positive change. The study addressed the question: What is the nature and value of participation in the PMA Sports Academy from the perspectives of those that take part? A participatory action research methodology was utilised. The methods of data collection were collaborative and culturally in tune with participants' lives and values. Three World Café events involving 23 participants, and walking interviews involving nine participants, took place around the places and spaces associated with taking part in the PMA. Participants contributed to the data analysis. The main findings related to the complex nature and value of participation; the dark-side of participation; the importance of place and space; and the transformational potential of participation. The study extends understanding about how community projects might organise participation in sport for people with experience of mental distress, to maximise the benefits derived. This needs to include an appreciation of the need to manage tensions around inclusion and competition. The thesis also highlights the importance of researching with community projects to explore the experiences of marginalised groups.

3. Methods to advance health equity and social justice in healthcare: Protocol for a scoping review on the utilisation of routinely collected data.

Abstract

Background: Many areas of healthcare are impacted by a paucity of research that is translatable to clinical practice. Research utilising real-world data, such as routinely collected patient data, may be one option to efficiently create evidence to inform practice and service delivery. Such studies are also valuable for exploring (in)equity of services and outcomes, and benefit from using non-selected samples representing the diversity of the populations served in the 'real world'. This scoping review aims to identify and map the published research which utilises routinely collected clinical healthcare data. A secondary aim is to explore the extent to which this literature supports the pursuit of social justice in health, including health inequities and intersectional approaches. Method: This review utilises Arksey and O'Malley's methodological framework for scoping reviews and draws on the recommended enhancements of this framework to promote a team-based and mixed methods approach. This includes searching electronic databases and screening papers based on a pre-specified inclusion and exclusion criteria. Data relevant to the research aims will be extracted from included papers, including the clinical/professional area of the topic, the source of data that was used, and whether it addresses elements of social justice. All screening and reviewing will be collaborative and iterative, drawing on strengths of the research team and responsive changes to challenges will be made. Quantitative data will be analysed descriptively, and conceptual content analysis will be utilised to understand qualitative data. These will be collectively synthesised in alignment to the research aims. Conclusion: Our findings will highlight the extent to which such research is being conducted and published, including gaps and make recommendations for future endeavours for real-world data studies. 6. Doing together: reflections on facilitating the co-production of participatory action research with marginalised populations

Abstract

ABSTRACTRecognising the limited literature detailing the practical application of co-production principles and practices within sport, exercise and health research, critical reflections on co-production principles and practice are shared here, drawing on two participatory action research (PAR) projects in the United Kingdom (UK). Co-production and PAR are distinguished, and their commonalities discussed. Both projects were facilitated by occupational therapists and concerned with health inequities and social justice. The Voices for Inclusive Activity project brought disabled people together online to explore more accessible and inclusive approaches to evaluate disability sport and physical activity. The Positive Mental Attitude project took place with a community-based football league for people with experience of mental distress and explored the nature and value of participation. Both projects involved researching withpeople who are often excluded from research. Addressing power imbalances can function to engage marginalised people in processes of knowledge production and enable social justice. Co-production offers useful principles that are democratic, inclusive, collaborative, and participatory, but the process is not straightforward. The reflections within this paper focus on the challenges and opportunities the first and second authors faced as facilitators of co-produced research. Participant and co-researcher quotes reveal how participatory methods and approaches address gaps in experiential knowledge of exclusion and marginalisation. The potential for co-produced research to influence policy and practice is outlined.

Abstract

It is well documented that research capacity within the therapy professions is underdeveloped and that opportunities to engage in research training must be therefore be created and seized (Department of Health 1994, Ilott and Bury 2002, Healey and Jenkins 2009). Over the last decade the development of bureaucratic research governance procedures has had a negative impact on research education and training; largely due to the difficulties associated with gaining the necessary permissions and approvals to conduct research within tight academic timeframes (Corr et al 2006). Recent research governance developments have aimed to correct this and make the research process more accessible (Pettican and Bostock 2009). These developments are presented and analysed below for their potential to enable pre-registration student research

14. Mental Health Outcomes Compendium.

Abstract

The article offers information on the publication of the Mental Health Outcomes Compendium by the National Institute for Mental Health in England (NIMHE). It mentions that the compendium is designed for clinicians engaged in mental health service delivery and development which makes disappointing that an occupational perspective is lacking. Moreover, it is hoped that the inclusion of the piece of work will enable a more balanced compendium that reflects its original intentions.
