Abstract

Results solving the long standing puzzle regarding the phase diagram and the pressure evolution of the melting temperature Tm(P) of gallium nitride (GaN), the most promising semiconducting material for innovative modern electronic applications, are presented. The analysis is based on (i) studies of the decomposition curve in P-T plane up to challenging P equal 9 GPa, (ii) novel method enabling Tm(P) determination despite the earlier decomposition, and (iii) the pressure invariant parameterization of Tm(P) curve, showing the reversal melting for P greater-than 22 GPa. This is linked to a possible fluid-fluid crossover under extreme pressures and temperatures. The importance of results for the development of GaN based technologies is indicated.

Abstract

The aluminum oxide-coating on cemented carbide tools used for metal cutting have been regarded as inert during cutting of steels. Because diffusional dissolution is not possible. Chemical degradation of aluminum oxide coatings is often overlooked, especially in the presence of ambient oxygen and non-metallic inclusions. High-pressure diffusion couples, advanced microscopy, and thermodynamics are used to investigate and predict the chemical degradation of aluminum oxide-coated tools. During interactions with steel and different combinations of inclusions with and without ambient oxygen. The results show that alumina is resistant to chemical degra-dation by steel in the absence of oxygen. However, this is not the case when oxygen and non-metallic inclusions are present. These experiments and microscopy together with the thermodynamic calculations allow for the creation of a method and guidelines for chemical wear modeling and steel inclusion engineering when machining with aluminum oxide-coated tools., QC 20221205

Abstract

In current paper, we report on mechanical properties and wear resistance of high pressure high temperature (HPHT) sintered cutting tool materials based on cBN with carbides of transition metals Ti, Cr, V used as binders. Itial mixtures of compositions were chosen with 60 vol.% of cBN, 35 vol.% of binder phase and 5 vol.% of Al. Aluminum was introduced into the starting mixture as an oxygen getter. Sintering were conducted in HPHT toroid type apparatus under pressure of approx. 7,7 GPa and in the temperature range of 1600-2450°С. Elastic properties were measured using the ultrasonic pulse- echo technique. The highest tool wear resistance is demonstrated by the tools sintered at 2000-2150°С during machining of AISI 316L. It was found that samples sintered in the temperature range of 2000-2150 ° C demonstrate the highest wear resistance while machining of stainless steel AISI 316L., Исследовано механические свойства и эксплуатационные характеристики режущего материала на основе кубического нитрида бора со связками в виде карбидов переходных металлов (Ti, Cr, V), алюминий был введен в шихту качестве гетера. Композиты получено путем термобарического спекания в аппарате высокого давления типа тороид. Обнаружено, что образцы полученные в температурном интерв але 2000-2150 °С демонстрируют самую высокую износостойкость в условиях высокоскоростного точения нержавеющей стали AISI 316L., Досліджено механічні властивості та експлуатаційні характеристики різального матеріалу на основі кубічного нітриду бору зі зв ’язками у виді карбідів перехідних металів (Ti, Cr, V), алюміній був введений в шихту якості гетеру. Композити одержано шляхом термобаричного спікання в апараті високого тиску типу тороїд. Виявлено, що зразки спечені в температурному інтервалі 2000 -2150°С демонструють найвищу зносостійкість в умовах високошвидкісного точіння нержавіючої сталі AISI 316L.

16. Investigation of the mechanical properties and cutting performance of cBN-based cutting tools with Cr3C2binder phase.

Abstract

In order to investigate new materials for metal cutting applications, cubic boron nitride, cutting tools with different amounts of binder phase were sintered in HPHT toroid type apparatus under 7.7 GPa and in temperature range of 1450-2450°С. Initial mixtures of three composition were chosen with 50, 60, 65 vol. % of cBN, 5 vol. % of Al was added to mixture to prevent oxidation. Phase composition, microstructure, elastic properties, hardness, fracture toughness and cutting performance were investigated. The highest value of the mechanical properties and tool life demonstrated samples sintered in temperature range 1850-2150 °C.
