Abstract

A search for narrow Theta(1540)^+, a candidate for pentaquark baryon with positive strangeness, has been performed in an exclusive proton-induced reaction p+C(N) \to Theta^+ \bar{K}^0 + C(N) on carbon nuclei or quasifree nucleons at E_{beam}=70 GeV (sqrt{s} = 11.5 GeV) studying nK^+, pK_S and pK_L decay channels of Theta(1540)^+ in four different final states of the Theta^+ \bar{K}^0 system. In order to assess the quality of the identification of the final states with neutron or K_L we reconstructed Lambda(1520)\to nK_S and phi\to K_LK_S decays in the calibration reactions p+C(N)\to Lambda(1520)K^+ + C(N) and p+C(N)\to p\phi + C(N). We found no evidence for narrow pentaquark peak in any of the studied final states and decay channels. Assuming that the production characteristics of the Theta^+ \bar{K^0} system are not drastically different from those of the Lambda(1520)K^+ and p\phi systems, we established upper limits on the cross section ratios sigma(Theta^+\bar{K}^0)/sigma(Lambda(1520)K^+) < 0.02 and sigma(Theta^+\bar{K}^0)/sigma(p\phi) < 0.15 at 90% CL and a preliminary upper limit for the forward hemisphere cross section sigma(Theta^+\bar{K}^0) < 30 nb/nucleon., Comment: 14 pages; 16 figures. Abstract

A search for narrow Θ(1540)+, a candidate for pentaquark baryon with positive strangeness, has been performed in an exclusive proton-induced reaction p+C(N) → Θ+ &Kmacr;0+C(N) on carbon nuclei or quasifree nucleons at Ebeam = 70 GeV (√8 = 11.5 GeV) studying nK+, pKS0 and pKL0 decay channels of Θ(1540)+ in four different final states of the Θ+ &Kmacr;0 system. In order to assess the quality of the identification of the final states with neutron or KL0, we reconstructed Λ(1520) → nKS0 and Φ → KL0 KS0 decays in the calibration reactions p+C(N) → Λ(1520)K+ +C(N) and p+C(N) → pΦ+C(N). We found no evidence for narrow pentaquark peak in any of the studied final states and decay channels. Abstract

The multiplicity distributions of charged particles produced from π−,K− and " interactions with the nuclei Li, C, S, Cu, CsI, Pb at 40 GeV/c were studied. It was found that the linear relationD=a〈n〉+b is satisfied for the distributions of different kinds of secondary particles including knocked out protons. Consequently, the use of the scaling variablez′=(an+b)/(a〈n〉+b) ensures the scaling of the distributions with respect to the mass numberA at least up to the second moment.

Abstract

We present results obtained in p-A (A=C, Cu, Pb) — collisions at 38 GeV/c. A single particle trigger selects events with one charged particle in the central region and large transverse momentum. The effect of this trigger on the multiplicities of all charged particles and of protons is shown.

Abstract

The pp0 production in nuclear Coulomb field at threshold has been studied for the first time experimentally. The cross section of the reaction $$\pi ^ - + (A,Z) \to \pi ^ - + \pi ^0 + (A,Z)$$ at 40 GeV on C, Al, Fe nuclei has been determined for small 4-momentum transferst<2·10-3 (GeV/c)2 and invariant mass of p-p0S<10mp2. The obtained result is in agreement with Adler's PCAC anomaly and colourSU(3) theory.

Abstract

Measurements ofKs0, ? and " production in p- nucleus (C, Cu, Pb) interactions are presented. The experiment was carried out with the streamer chamber spectrometer RISK using a p- beam of ~40 GeV/c and a trigger requiring a secondary charged particle with transverse momentum above 1.1 GeV/c. Production cross sections, relative production rates and distributions of Feynmanx and transverse momentum squared as well as correlations between theV0 and the trigger particle are presented. The results are compared and found to be in agreement withKs0, ? and " data from untriggered p-p and p-C interactions, except for the relative production rate of antilambdas which is about to times larger in high-pt collisions. Our results can be well interpreted within the dual topological unitarization model.

Abstract

The π−p interactions with at least one charged secondary produced at polar angle ∼90° in c.m.s. and having the transverse momentum above 1 GeV/c were investigated. The data were obtained using streamer chamber magnetic spectrometer RISK at 38 GeV/c π beam from Serpukhov accelerator. The analyzis of associated production in reconstructed events suggests, that if the transverse momentum of a pair of oppositely charged secondaries compensates the trigger particlep⊥ practically completely, this pair is the product of the ρ0 decay in marked fraction of such events. We observed a large spin-alignment for the ρ0-mesons selected as described above: the probability of zero spin projection onto the normal to the ρ0 production plane is equal to ρ00T=0.86±0.23. The enhancement of the number of events, in which the ρ0 picks up practically full momentum transfer carrying by the exchange, and also the enlarged tensor polarization for the ρ0-mesons in these events could be qualitatively explained as manifestation of direct ρ0-production via the QCD higher twist processes in the highp⊥π−p collisions. At the same time, the observed effects are markedly larger than the values predicted with QCD model in which the higher twist corrections were included.

Abstract

The paper presents the results on differential cross sections for elastic scattering of 7+-, K+-mesons and protons on protons in the 4-momentum transfer squared range 0·08 ?¦t¦? ?1·0 (GeV/c)2 and incident particle momentum of 29 and 43 GeV/c for pions and kaons and 29, 43, 50 and 65 GeV/c for protons. The measurements were taken with the spectrometer Sigma, installed in the positive beam of the IHEP accelerator.

Abstract

Interactions of 40 GeV/c πp-,K− and " on Li, C, S, Cu, CsI and Pb were studied with the RISK-streamer chamber spectrometer. We present multiplicities of negatively charged particles, as well as of protons, and the correlations between them. The normalized mean multiplicity of negative particles,R−, depends on ", the average number of inelastic collisions as ". The dependence of the normalized dispersion of negative particles,D−/−>, on the number of protons favours independent collision models and contradicts the coherent tube picture. The excess of fast positive particles behaves asA0.4 and shows, for the heavier nuclei, a clear correlation with identified protons.

Abstract

The reaction p-A?Ap- ? at 40 GeV/c was studied on “Sigma” spectrometer on six different nuclear targets in the region of four-momentum transfer |t|<0.05 (GeV/c)2. A phenomenon of elastic scattering of pions on the nuclear Coulomb field photons was observed, its total and differential cross sections were measured. The cross section of Compton effect on p--meson was measured.

Abstract

Ionization energy losses of charged particles in a substance are described by the well-known Bethe-Bloch formula. However, the magnitudes of the ionization potentials in region of low proton energies (E 100 MeV) for heavy elements prove to be considerably larger than those at high energies. Thus studies of ionization losses in the region of high energies are the main source of the experimental information necessary for the correction of the Bethe Bloch formula and determination of magnitudes of ionization potentials I. The purpose of this work was to measure the magnitudes of ionization losses dE/ds, paths R and ionization potentials I at a proton energy of E 670 MeV. The measurements were taken by the relative method for different substances of x, and the magnitudes of q sub x=(dE/ds) sub x/(dE/ds) sub Al and px=R sub x/R sub Al were found. Quantities qx and px weakly depend on the energy E where at E=200-600 MeV, a=(2-4).10-2 for different substances. The proton energy was determined with an accuracy of 2 MeV.
