Abstract

We present updated results from the NOvA experiment for $\nu_\mu\rightarrow\nu_\mu$ and $\nu_\mu\rightarrow\nu_e$ oscillations from an exposure of $8.85\times10^{20}$ protons on target, which represents an increase of 46% compared to our previous publication. The results utilize significant improvements in both the simulations and analysis of the data. A joint fit to the data for $\nu_\mu$ disappearance and $\nu_e$ appearance gives the best fit point as normal mass hierarchy, $\Delta m^2_{32} = 2.44\times 10^{-3}{{\rm eV}^2}/c^4$, $\sin^2\theta_{23} = 0.56$, and $\delta_{CP} = 1.21\pi$. The 68.3% confidence intervals in the normal mass hierarchy are $\Delta m^2_{32} \in [2.37,2.52]\times 10^{-3}{{\rm eV}^2}/c^4$, $\sin^2\theta_{23} \in [0.43,0.51] \cup [0.52,0.60]$, and $\delta_{CP} \in [0,0.12\pi] \cup [0.91\pi,2\pi]$. The inverted mass hierarchy is disfavored at the 95% confidence level for all choices of the other oscillation parameters.

Abstract

The tetralogy of Fallot is the most common form of cyanotic congenital heart malformations. However, its association with Down syndrome is uncommon. We present two patients with uncorrected during childhood tetralogy of Fallot. One of them had also Down syndrome. We performed a complete surgical correction: closure of the inter-ventricular defect, right ventricular outflow tract reconstruction, pulmonary valve prosthesis and pulmonary artery patch repair (in one of the cases). The postoperative period was uncomplicated, patients were discharged on days 12 and 10, and the follow-up showed a significant functional class improvement.

We present a case of a biatrial thrombus penetrating through the PFO against the background of massive bilateral pulmonary thromboembolism in a 75-year-old patient. Because of the rare condition, there are no literature data on consensus treatment. Due to the patient’s clinical status and the results of the diagnostic tests, for the specific clinical case was made a decision for emergency surgical thrombectomy with PFO closure.

Abstract

Silicon nitride membranes were experimentally obtained as substrates for biological samples, which are examined using a microscope with an operating wavelength of 13.8 nm. The free-hanging films obtained have a size of up to 1.5 × 1.5 mm2, which makes it possible to select an area of interest for investigation on the sample on the order of tens to hundreds of microns. The mechanical strength of the membranes satisfies that the samples do not tear the membranes and withstand transportation. The results obtained are an import-substituting technology for the manufacture of Si3N4 membranes. The resulting membranes have a transparency of more than 40% in the range of the "water transparency window" (2.3–4.4 nm) and EUV (13–15 nm). The developed technology will become the basis for creating cuvettes for living biological samples for soft X-ray microscopy studies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

20. Non-invasive dissection of the human visual system

Abstract

A flickering stimulus can appear brighter or of different colour than a steady stimulus of the same spectral composition and equal time-averaged intensity. The change in appearance is consistent with the distortion product of a nonlinearity in the human visual system. This nonlinearity is used for non-invasive dissection of the human visual system into prenonlinearity and post-nonlinearity linear stages, which affect the amplitude of the sinusoidal signals that they process. A five-channel Maxwellian system was used to generate cosine-windowed, amplitude-modulated, sinusoidally-flickering stimuli. The subjects adjusted the maximum modulation of the signal in order to set the threshold for the perception of flicker and colour or brightness change. The pre-nonlinearity filter was tested by varying the carrier frequency between 5 Hz and 60 Hz and the post-nonlinearity filter was measured by varying the amplitude-modulation frequency between 0.25 Hz and 5 Hz. The L- and M-cone pathways are separately measured by using a new combination of the silent-cone-substitution technique and the sandwich model. The distortion product at the output of the nonlinearity is measured by using a new matching method for measuring the colour and brightness changes. The results suggest that the pre-nonlinearity filter is band-pass and shows substantial adaptation with light intensity that can explain most of the adaptation in the visual pathways. The post-nonlinearity filter is low-pass and shows little or no adaptation with light intensity. The input-output function of the nonlinearity can be described as an expansive, quadratic function that rapidly saturates at high input levels.

Abstract

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Inflammatory bowel disease colitis-associated dysplasia is managed with either enhanced surveillance and endoscopic resection or prophylactic surgery. The rate of progression to cancer after a dysplasia diagnosis remains uncertain in many cases and patients have high thresholds for accepting proctocolectomy. Individualised discussion of management options is encouraged to take place between patients and their multidisciplinary teams for best outcomes. We aimed to develop a toolkit to support a structured, multidisciplinary and shared decision-making approach to discussions about dysplasia management options between clinicians and their patients. METHODS: Evidence from systematic literature reviews, mixed-methods studies conducted with key stakeholders, and decision-making expert recommendations were consolidated to draft consensus statements by the DECIDE steering group. These were then subjected to an international, multidisciplinary modified electronic Delphi process until an a priori threshold of 80% agreement was achieved to establish consensus for each statement. RESULTS: In all, 31 members [15 gastroenterologists, 14 colorectal surgeons and two nurse specialists] from nine countries formed the Delphi panel. We present the 18 consensus statements generated after two iterative rounds of anonymous voting. CONCLUSIONS: By consolidating evidence for best practice using literature review and key stakeholder and decision-making expert consultation, we have developed international consensus recommendations to support health care professionals counselling patients on the management of high cancer risk colitis-associated dysplasia. The final toolkit includes clinician and patient decision aids to facilitate shared decision-making.

Item does not contain fulltext, INTRODUCTION: Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) is the outer membrane component of Gram-negative bacteria. LPS-binding protein (LBP) is an acute-phase reactant that mediates immune responses triggered by LPS and has been used as a blood marker for LPS. LBP has recently been indicated to be associated with Parkinson's disease (PD) in small-scale retrospective case-control studies. We aimed to investigate the association between LBP blood levels with PD risk in a nested case-control study within a large European prospective cohort. METHODS: A total of 352 incident PD cases (55% males) were identified and one control per case was selected, matched by age at recruitment, sex and study center. LBP levels in plasma collected at recruitment, which was on average 7.8 years before diagnosis of the cases, were analyzed by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay. Odds ratios (ORs) were estimated for one unit increase of the natural log of LBP levels and PD incidence by conditional logistic regression. RESULTS: Plasma LBP levels were higher in prospective PD cases compared to controls (median (interquartile range) 26.9 (18.1-41.0) vs. 24.7 (16.6-38.4) µg/ml). The OR for PD incidence per one unit increase of log LBP was elevated (1.46, 95% CI 0.98-2.19). This association was more pronounced among women (OR 2.68, 95% CI 1.40-5.13) and overweight/obese subjects (OR 1.54, 95% CI 1.09-2.18). CONCLUSION: The findings suggest that higher plasma LBP levels may be associated with an increased risk of PD and may thus pinpoint to a potential role of endotoxemia in the pathogenesis of PD, particularly in women and overweight/obese individuals.
