Psychosocial risks constitute one of the major contemporary challenges for occupational health and safety. As early identification is the first step towards psychosocial risk management, the psychometric tool presented in the paper has been constructed in order to measure psychosocial risks as well as their impacts. The Psychosocial Risks and Impacts in the Workplace Assessment Tool (PRIWA) has been developed in Greek during the early years of the economic crisis. The paper presents the tool and the studies that were conducted to evaluate its psychometric characteristics. Six large samples of employees from many different Greek companies were administered the PRIWA and other tools. The results of the exploratory factor analysis demonstrated a seven-factor structure of the PRIWA, which was later confirmed by confirmatory factor analysis. Analyses were also performed to test internal consistency, item-to-scale homogeneity, and concurrent validity of the PRIWA. The results indicated that PRIWA is a reliable and valid psychometric tool, which gives its users the opportunity to conduct research, develop prevention plans, and/or design customized interventions.

Strawberry, the most significant berry crop, is characterized as a salt-sensitive plant. The present study aimed to examine ways to alleviate salinity symptoms (34 mM of NaCl in irrigation water) in strawberry plants. For this purpose, the osmolyte glycine betaine was foliarly applied, a mixture of bentonite–zeolite was added to the substrate, and a microbial product based on Bacillys amyloliquefaciens as a soil drench were tested in terms of plant growth and nutrient status, yield, fruit physiological and organoleptic characteristics, as well as phytochemical properties (phenolic compounds, carbohydrates, organic acids, anthocyanins, and antioxidant capacity), and soil physicochemical properties. Salinity severely reduced plant growth and yield, while the effects on fruit quality were also distinct. Treatments alleviated to some extent these negative effects. Plant nutrient content was not severely affected by product application, and neither were most of the soil physicochemical properties. Among the products applied, the mixture of bentonite plus zeolite and glycine betaine proved to be more efficient in ameliorating toxicity symptoms, as both treatments preserved plant hydric status and plant growth, while glycine betaine resulted in an almost 30% higher yield than the treatment with saline water.

Polyamines are actively involved in diverse processes, including fruit ripening and stress responses. The aim of this study was to investigate the role of storage temperature on polyamine metabolism of tomato fruit, which were either harvested at the turning stage or left to mature on-plant. The applied temperatures (5, 10 and 25 °C) and storage duration (7 d) are regularly employed in real-world scenarios. The metabolic profile of polyamines (putrescine, spermidine and spermine), gene transcription of the enzymes mediating polyamine biosynthesis and catabolism, protein accumulation of the putrescine synthesis enzyme and the putrescine-produced H2O2 were evaluated. Putrescine was the major polyamine in all cases, and its content generally increased during ripening, as well as in chilled fruit (stored at 5 °C). Increases in arginine decarboxylase protein content and in arginine decarboxylase transcription of both attached fruit and detached ones stored at either 10 or 25 °C showed that putrescine accumulation was mainly driven via the arginine decarboxylase biosynthetic pathway. Interestingly, putrescine catabolism by copper-containing amine oxidase was favored in parallel with increases in arginine decarboxylase and ornithine decarboxylase transcripts in fruit stored at 5 °C. However, the arginine decarboxylase protein accumulation suggests that ornithine decarboxylase is mainly responsible for putrescine accumulation at 5 °C. This study indicates that storage temperature modifies the homeostasis of polyamines in tomato fruit, which in turn orchestrates ripening-associated physiological processes.

Adverse conditions and biotic strain can lead to significant losses and impose limitations on plant yield. Polyamines (PAs) serve as regulatory molecules for both abiotic/biotic stress responses and cell protection in unfavourable environments. In this work, the transcription pattern of 24 genes orchestrating PA metabolism was investigated in Cucumber Mosaic Virus or Potato Virus Y infected and cold stressed tomato plants. Expression analysis revealed a differential/pleiotropic pattern of gene regulation in PA homeostasis upon biotic, abiotic or combined stress stimuli, thus revealing a discrete response specific to diverse stimuli: (i) biotic stress-influenced genes, (ii) abiotic stress-influenced genes, and (iii) concurrent biotic/abiotic stress-regulated genes. The results support different roles for PAs against abiotic and biotic stress. The expression of several genes, significantly induced under cold stress conditions, is mitigated by a previous viral infection, indicating a possible priming-like mechanism in tomato plants pointing to crosstalk among stress signalling. Several genes and resulting enzymes of PA catabolism were stimulated upon viral infection. Hence, we suggest that PA catabolism resulting in elevated H2O2 levels could mediate defence against viral infection. However, after chilling, the activities of enzymes implicated in PA catabolism remained relatively stable or slightly reduced. This correlates to an increase in free PA content, designating a per se protective role of these compounds against abiotic stress.

The aim of this work was to investigate the effects of ReTain (4.15%, w/w, amino ethoxyvinyl glycine, AVG), an ethylene synthesis inhibitor, sprayed at concentrations up to 250 mg L −1 before the green maturation of ‘Konservolia’ olives ( Olea europea L.) on colouring in fruit harvested up to 20 d later and on ripening variables in fruit selected green at harvest and exposed at 20 °C for up to 7 d. Earlier applications and higher ReTain concentrations were more effective in preventing colouring at harvest, and softening and green losses at 20 °C. Ethylene production was non-measurable or very low. Increased respiration was observed only in early treated fruit with ReTain on day 1 at 20 °C, but respiration reduced in all fruit during exposure time. Oleuropein (OE), the major phenolic, hydroxytyrosol, tyrosol, luteolin 7- O -glucoside, luteolin 4- O -glucoside, rutin, and ferulic and p-coumaric acids were measured in all samples. OE, confirmed by HPLC–ESI-MS, and total antioxidant activity were lower in ReTain treated fruit than in controls and remained so after the increases at 20 °C in all fruit. Conclusively, ReTain could be used to extend the harvest period and/or improve the quality of fresh green olives for table use, and particularly those destined for Spanish-style processing.
