1. COVID-ABS: An Agent-Based Model of COVID-19 Epidemic to Simulate Health and Economic Effects of Social Distancing Interventions

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic due to the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus has directly impacted the public health and economy worldwide. To overcome this problem, countries have adopted different policies and non-pharmaceutical interventions for controlling the spread of the virus. This paper proposes the COVID-ABS, a new SEIR (Susceptible-Exposed-Infected-Recovered) agent-based model that aims to simulate the pandemic dynamics using a society of agents emulating people, business and government. Seven different scenarios of social distancing interventions were analyzed, with varying epidemiological and economic effects: (1) do nothing, (2) lockdown, (3) conditional lockdown, (4) vertical isolation, (5) partial isolation, (6) use of face masks, and (7) use of face masks together with 50% of adhesion to social isolation. In the impossibility of implementing scenarios with lockdown, which present the lowest number of deaths and highest impact on the economy, scenarios combining the use of face masks and partial isolation can be the more realistic for implementation in terms of social cooperation. The COVID-ABS model was implemented in Python programming language, with source code publicly available. The model can be easily extended to other societies by changing the input parameters, as well as allowing the creation of a multitude of other scenarios. 4. Construction and Recognition of Hyperbolic 3-Manifolds with Geodesic Boundary

Abstract

We extend to the context of hyperbolic 3-manifolds with geodesic boundary Thurston's approach to hyperbolization by means of geometric triangulations. In particular, we introduce moduli for (partially) truncated hyperbolic tetrahedra, and we discuss consistency and completeness equations. Moreover, building on previous work of Ushijima, we extend Weeks' tilt formula algorithm, which computes the Epstein-Penner canonical triangulation, to an algorithm that computes the Kojima triangulation. The theory is particularly interesting in the case of complete finite-volume manifolds with geodesic boundary in which the boundary is non-compact. We include this case using a suitable adjustment of the notion of ideal triangulation, and we show that the case naturally arises within the theory of knots and links., Comment: 50 pages, 12 figures

Abstract

In June 2019 from the region of Calabria (Italy) our group launched the Stratospheric Balloon MoCRiS (Measurement of Cosmic Ray in Stratosphere) that reached up to 35111 meters. MoCRiS is a didactical project that uses a Light Balloon with a payload of only 2.1 Kg payload box included. The capsule was Lithium-ion batteries operated and fully instrumented with two Hi-Res Camera, one for picture and one for video, GPS Tracker, two Particle detectors, and sensors for temperature and pressure. Two ArduSiPM [6] scintillation detectors, made by the INFN group in Rome, were used as cosmic ray flux meters. The technology used for these types of devices makes them very economical, light (<150 g), and with low power consumption (<1 Watt). These characteristics are optimal for use with the balloon and in space (e.g. in CubeSat), and very attractive for educational use, even on the ground. During the school year, the students of the scientific high school "Stefano Patrizi" of Cariati (CS) Italy, participated in the definition of the project following theoretical and practical lessons on aerospace techniques and particle physics with regard to cosmic ray showers in the atmosphere. The mission was completely successful by experimentally verifying the pressure-to-height relation, the height of the thermal inversion in the atmosphere, reaching and exceeding the maximum Regener-Pfotzer level of the shower development. The instrumental and didactic platform created is easily replicable even with further upgrades. We are expanding the collaboration with other schools for further launches.

Abstract

OCRA - Outreach Cosmic Ray Activities was born in 2018 as a national outreach project of INFN with the aim of collecting, within a national framework, the numerous public engagement activities in the field of cosmic ray physics already present at a local level in the divisions and laboratories. Since spring 2020 OCRA offers also a series of online laboratories on its website https://web.infn.it/OCRA/, designed not only to be used by students individually but also to be offered in the classroom by teachers. The cosmic ray path, present on the website, will be presented together with the online laboratories on the measurement of muons, from the one related to the dependence on the zenith angle made during the International Cosmic Day up to measurements of the flux dependency on the altitude in the atmosphere and in the water. Also, a laboratory allowing to analyze public data of the Pierre Auger Observatory will be presented. In addition, some teaching methods included in the "Teachers' area" of the OCRA website will be described. The developed cosmic ray path was also used to organize an online course for teachers of Italian high schools with the purpose of accompanying teachers when approaching the subject for the first time. Abstract

The Outreach Cosmic Ray Activities (OCRA) project offers a platform for all outreach activities focusing on cosmic rays within the Italian Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare (INFN). Created in 2018, OCRA now counts 21 of the institute's divisions all over Italy as members. The project's core activity is the participation of all its members in the International Cosmic Day, organized by DESY, and inviting high school students to carry out hands-on measurements of the cosmic ray flux and learn about the related physics background. Two students from each division are then selected to participate in the annual OCRA science camp, a three-day full immersion into the life of a physicist. The national activities are complemented by local initiatives of the OCRA member groups: workshops and tutorship programs, science competitions and the development of new detectors for outreach activities offer a multitude of possibilities for students to engage with our researchers and to explore the world of cosmic rays. Since spring of 2020 OCRA also offers a series of online laboratories on its website https://web.infn.it/OCRA/, designed not only to be used by students individually but also to be used in the classroom by teachers. Here we will give an overview on all activities offered by OCRA with a particular focus on the 2020 online event organized in occasion of the International Cosmic Day, that saw the participation of more than 3000 students.

Abstract

The outreach program “A scuola di Astroparticelle” was proposed in 2016 by the National Institute for Nuclear Physics (INFN - Napoli Division) in collaboration with the Physics Department “Ettore Pancini” of the Federico II University in Napoli, CNR-SPIN and CNR-ISASI Institutes. Its main goal is to engage teachers and students of High Schools in astroparticle physics projects. For the third edition (2018/19), the activities, which are also part of the Italian Educational Program PCTO - “Percorsi per le Competenze Trasversali e per l'Orientamento”, involved 18 schools for a total of 21 projects on several topics. Some projects were strictly related to astroparticles as cosmic rays, while others were more technical, as the development of particle detectors, or cross-disciplinary projects. Students worked for the entire school year and prepared materials for the final event. More than 600 students attended the event and presented their work to a jury with a poster and an oral presentation in plenary sessions. Since 2018, the program is part of OCRA - Outreach Cosmic Ray Activities - a national outreach project of INFN with the aim of collecting, within a common framework, the numerous outreach activities in cosmic-ray field carried out at the local level. The fourth edition (2019-20), in spite of the difficult situation due to the COVID-19 pandemic, has also seen the participation of 22 schools that carried out part of the activities in an online format. The project realized using the open data of the Pierre Auger Observatory will be presented in detail.

10. A Fuzzy-Probabilistic Representation Learning Method for Time Series Classification

Abstract

Time series classification (TSC) is a supervised task in which time series data are associated with predefined classes. Time ordering and correlations of the samples should be considered and observations can have different lengths. Therefore, learning compact and useful representations is an important approach for TSC. Fuzzy time series (FTS) methods have the ability to find temporal patterns and transition rules. Probabilistic weighted FTS (PWFTS) uses the empirical probabilities to find the model of a TS. Despite its good performance, this method has been used exclusively for forecasting problems. Therefore, in this study we propose a novel TSC method using the PWFTS representation learning weights as features in conjunction to a classifier algorithm. We show that PWFTS method is able to learn useful representations for time series in low computational time. Our algorithm was tested in 24 datasets available in the UCR TSC archive and compared with state-of-the-art methods: fuzzy cognitive maps, Rocket, and TS2Vec in combination to the classifiers random forest and support vector machine. The classification accuracy and execution time required to find the features were evaluated. The results show that our fuzzy-probabilistic representation learning method is similar in accuracy to the other methods, and the time consumption for PWFTS computation was two to five orders of magnitude faster than the other methods. The results suggest that our approach can be used in time sensitive applications and in systems with hardware limitations.

Abstract

Fuzzy cognitive maps (FCMs) have demonstrated considerable success in time series forecasting and are adept at handling uncertainties and capturing the dynamics of complex systems. Nevertheless, challenges still remain in the handling of multivariate high-dimensional time series using a time-effective learning algorithm. This article introduces multiple-input multiple-output randomized high-order FCM (MRHFCM), a new methodology for predicting high-dimensional time series in multiple-input–multiple-output systems. MRHFCM represents a hybrid method that combines data embedding transformation, randomized high-order FCM (R-HFCM), and an echo state network. The core of MRHFCM involves a cascade of R-HFCMs termed the CR-HFCM model. Each CR-HFCM comprises three layers: 1) the input layer, 2) reservoir (internal layer), and 3) output layer. Notably, only the output layer is trainable, employing the least squares minimization algorithm. The weights within each subreservoir are randomly chosen and remain unchanged throughout the training procedure. Three real-world high-dimensional datasets are utilized to assess the performance of the proposed MRHFCM method. The results obtained reveal that our approach outperforms some existing baseline and state-of-the-art machine learning and deep learning forecasting techniques in terms of both accuracy and parsimony.

Abstract

Air pollution is a worldwide problem faced by most countries across the world. Prediction of air pollution is crucial in air quality research since it is related to public health effects. The symmetry concept of fuzzy data transformation from a single point (crisp) to a fuzzy number is essential for the forecasting model. Fuzzy time series (FTS) is applied for predicting air pollution; however, it has a limitation caused by utilizing an arbitrary number of intervals. This study involves predicting the daily air pollution index using the FTS Markov chain (FTSMC) model based on a grid method with an optimal number of partitions, which can greatly develop the model accuracy for air pollution. The air pollution index (API) data, which was collected from Klang, Malaysia, is considered in the analysis. The model has been validated using three statistical criteria, which are the root mean (RMSE), the mean absolute percentage error (MAPE), and the Thiels’ U statistic. Also, the model’s validation has been investigated by comparison with some of the famous statistical models. The results of the proposed model demonstrated outperformed the other models. Thus, the proposed model could be a better option in air pollution forecasting that can be useful for managing air quality.

Abstract

The Outreach Cosmic Ray Activities (OCRA) project offers a platform for all outreach activities focusing on cosmic rays within the Italian Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare (INFN). Created in 2018, OCRA now counts 21 of the institute's divisions all over Italy as members. The project's core activity is the participation of all its members in the International Cosmic Day, organized by DESY, and inviting high school students to carry out hands-on measurements of the cosmic ray flux and learn about the related physics background. Two students from each division are then selected to participate in the annual OCRA science camp, a three-day full immersion into the life of a physicist. The national activities are complemented by local initiatives of the OCRA member groups: workshops and tutorship programs, science competitions and the development of new detectors for outreach activities offer a multitude of possibilities for students to engage with our researchers and to explore the world of cosmic rays. Since spring of 2020 OCRA also offers a series of online laboratories on its website https://web.infn.it/OCRA/, designed not only to be used by students individually but also to be used in the classroom by teachers. Here we will give an overview on all activities offered by OCRA with a particular focus on the 2020 online event organized in occasion of the International Cosmic Day, that saw the participation of more than 3000 students.

Abstract

The Aurelian Mammal Age for peninsular Italy was introduced on the basis of faunal assemblages mainly recovered at sites along the Via Aurelia west of Rome. These sites exposed a set of sedimentary deposits currently attributed to the Aurelia and to the Vitinia Formations correlated with MIS 9 and MIS 7, respectively. In the present paper we reconstruct the geologic-stratigraphic setting in the western sector of Rome within the wider context of glacio-eustatically controlled, geochronologically constrained aggradational successions defined for this region. We present a chronostratigraphic study based on dedicated field surveys, that, combined with five new 40Ar/39Ar ages and eighteen trace-element and EMP glass analyses of volcanic products, allow us to revise age and correlation with the Marine Isotopic Stages for 10 sites out of 12 previously attributed to the Aurelia Formation and the Torre in Pietra Faunal Unit. In particular, we demonstrate a MIS 13/MIS 11 age for several sections along the Via Aurelia between Malagrotta and Castel di Guido. Based on this new geochronological framework, the first occurrences of Canis lupus and Vulpes vulpes in Italy are antedated to MIS 11, within the Fontana Ranuccio Faunal Unit of the Galerian Mammal Age, consistent with the wider European context. This contribution is intended as the groundwork for a revision of the Middle Pleistocene Mammal Ages of the Italian peninsula, according to the improved chronostratigraphy of the geologic sections hosting the faunal assemblages.

Abstract

In the present study we provide a paleontological and chronostratigraphic review of the Villafranchian fossiliferous sites of Latium, revising the biochronologic attribution based on their framing within the geodynamic and paleogeographic evolutionary picture for this region. Aimed at this scope, we reconstruct the sedimentary and structural history of the Early Pleistocene marine basins through the review and the regional correlation of published stratigraphic sections and borehole data. Moreover, we combine the chronostratigraphic constraints provided in this study to the near-coast deposits of Gelasian-Santernian age (2.58–1.5 Ma) with the results of a recent geomorphologic study of this area, allowing us to reconstruct a suite of terraced paleo-surfaces correlated with marine isotopic stages 21 through 5. By doing so, we provide further age constraints to the sedimentary and tectonic processes acting on the Tyrrhenian Sea margin in Quaternary times, highlighting a possible different paleogeographic evolution of the southern coastal area where the Middle-Villafranchian type-section of Coste San Giacomo site is located, with respect to the northern sector.

Abstract

A short account of the palaeontological campaigns organized and led by Alberto Malatesta in the Mediterranean islands, in search of Quaternary endemic vertebrates, is presented in this paper. The activity of Malatesta in such a field can be grouped in four periods. The first period (1964-1970) deals with his researches in Sardinia (Dragonara Cave, Nettuno Cave, Capo Figari); the second one (1970- 1972) includes the field campaigns in Crete (Simonelli cave and Katharo plateau); the third period (1972-1978) regards the researches in Sicily (Capo Tindari Cave); during the last period (1979-1984) the scientific interests of Malatesta returned back to Sardinia (Is Oreris quarry, Alghero neighbours). For each locality, a brief exposition of the principal results is presented together with a summary of the research and revision papers that Malatesta and his co-workers wrote on the material collected during the field seasons.

The lithic industry, composed by three cores and some flakes, has been found to be associated to an Early Pleistocene vertebrate fossil assemblage. The fossil association contains a wide range of micromammals, including Allophaiomys ruffoi and Episoriculus gibberodon and large mammals including Bison degiulii and Equus altidens together with African elements as the gelada baboon Theropithecus and the saber-toothed cat Megantereon whitei. It defines the latest Villafranchian chronological unit (Pirro Nord Faunal Unit) in the Western European mammal biochronology. The lithic industry of Pirro Nord represents the oldest occurrence of the genus Homo in Europe as it is attributable to a chronological interval between 1.3 and 1.7 Ma. This supports the hypothesis that the genus Homo, with Oldowaian technology, extended its range in Europe, probably from western Asia, during the first half of the Early Pleistocene. The new discovery from Pirro Nord changes the chronology of the first arrival of hominids in Europe and offers new perspectives in the debate about the human dispersal in the Early Pleistocene.

Abstract

We consider homotopy classes of non-singular vector fields on three-manifolds with boundary and we define for these classes torsion invariants of Reidemeister type. We show that torsion is well-defined and equivariant under the action of the appropriate homology group using an elementary and self-contained technique. Namely, we use the theory of branched standard spines to express the difference between two homotopy classes as a combination of well-understood elementary catastrophes. As a special case we are able to reproduce Turaev's theory of Reidemeister torsion for Euler structures in the special case of closed manifolds of dimension three

Abstract

Fluvial deposits of the Santa Maria di Ciciliano Formation crop out near Montecastrilli (Terni), in the southwestern branch of the Tiberino Basin. Many specimens of plants ("mummified" woods, fruits, and seeds), freshwater molluscs, ostracods, vertebrate bones and coprolites were collected at Torre Picchio. The small outcrop contains a fairly rich record of fruits and seeds, among which about 50 species were identified; the most frequent invariably belong to submerged, floating and emergent aquatic herbs, possibly because these were buried not far from their place of growth, thus representing the ancient local vegetation. The fruits and seeds of woody plants, including several exotic elements, were transported from neighboring areas and indicate a paleoclimate similar to the present day, though slightly wetter. Among molluscs, three distinct assemblages were found, indicating fluvial, swampy and lacustrine environment, respectively. They contain taxa of biochronological interest, most of them typical of Early Pleistocene deposits (Late Villafranchian), but making their first appearance in the Late Pliocene (Middle Villafranchian). One species Margaritifera (Pseudunio) auricularia, represents the oldest record everywhere, since it was known, so far, only from the Middle Pleistocene upwards. As palaeoenvironmental indicators, the ostracods complete the information given by molluscs. Vertebrates are represented by large and small mammals, rare birds, reptiles, amphibians, and some fishes. A great number of coprolites was collected as well. The mammal assemblage shows affinities with the Costa S. Giacomo and Olivola F.U. (Middle and Late Villafranchian, Late Pliocene). Mimomys medasensis, an Iberoccitane element, is signaled for the first time in Italy. From the geological point of view, the S. Maria di Ciciliano Fm. is interfingering with the marine Chiani - Tervere Fm., which is mostly Santernian in age and lies unconformably on the Middle Pliocene cycle. Only in some areas representing a structural low, the continuous transition between the lower portion of this unit and Late Pliocene deposits may be observed before the heteropic episodes. This fact suggests some inconsistencies between chronostratigraphy and biochronology in the examined area because some taxa indicate a latest Pliocene age. A heterochrony in the extinction of some species of plants and animals is suggested as a possible solution of the problem.

48. CATASTROPHIC DEATH ASSEMBLAGES FROM THE LATE PLEISTOCENE OF ITALY: THE CASE OF AVETRANA KARST FILLING (TARANTO, SOUTHERN ITALY)

Abstract

New and detailed taphonomic and stratigraphical analyses have been carried out at the early Late Pleistocene site of “La Grave”, nearby Avetrana (Taranto, Southern Italy). These, together with population analyses of the principal species represented (Bos primigenius, Dama dama, Cervus elaphus, Sus scrofa and Stephanorhinus hemitoechus), suggest that the fossiliferous deposits were probably accumulated rapidly, over a short time span, by exceptional events of heavy rainfall with overbank flooding. These results are supported particularly by comparison of the mammalian death assemblages from Avetrana with data from recent and Pleistocene catastrophic death assemblages documented in the literature. Furthermore, population analysis of species pinpoints the time of death between late autumn and winter. Periods with abundant and heavy rainfall are recorded in Late Pleistocene Mediterranean marine cores by the presence of sapropel levels, and in continental pollen diagrams covering the same time. Finally, observations on the morphometric variations in the bones of Bos primigenius reveal an increase in size of the species during the early Late Pleistocene and a decrease in size during the late Late Pleistocene and the Holocene.
