White oils are one of the purest petroleum products and are probably the second most common ingredient used in the production of cosmetics. White oils, which are tasteless, colorless and odorless, are highly refined saturated aliphatic and alicyclic non-polar hydrocarbons. White oil was initially imported to the US beginning in 1905 but is now produced domestically using catalytic high pressure and high temperature hydrogenation. The three quality grades are medicinal, food and technical.

The Clean Air Act and state regulations impose air quality standards that limit volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions. Producers are increasingly replacing VOC-containing solvents with petroleum distillates, aliphatic solvents that are carefully topped and blended to meet environmental requirements. Industries using aliphatic solvents include agriculture, textiles, cosmetics and water treatment.

Gippsland and Skua crude oil from offshore Australia have been assayed. Both are light, sweet crudes. Gippsland is found off the coast of Victoria, southeastern Australia and Skua is produced in the Timor Sea, off the coast of Western Australia.
