Multilayer film packaging (MLP) waste was decomposed completely at 500 °C. Catalysts were employed to convert residue polymer to waxes via pyrolysis at 500 °C. The activities achieved from using mordenite (Si/Al = 10), H-ZSM-5 (Si/Al = 25), MCM-41, and Al-MCM-41 (Si/Al ratio of 25, 50, and 75) catalysts were studied. The yield and property of the wax were improved with the use of the catalysis with various acidity and porous structure. The low yield of the waxes, when using mordenite and H-ZSM-5 catalysts, was caused by the microporous structure and strong acidic properties of the catalysts resulting in larger amount of gas production. The MCM-41 catalyst modified with various aluminum content raised the wax yield to 60 %. Al-MCM-41(50) produced the largest amount of wax when compared to Al-MCM-41(25), Al-MCM-41(75), and MCM-41. The mild acidity and mesoporous structure of Al-MCM-41(50) significantly enhanced the paraffins structure of the obtained waxes over other structures, while lower Si/Al ratios favored the conversion of paraffins toward olefin structure. The pyrolysis of MLP with Al-MCM-41(50) produced paraffins and olefins with the middle carbon ranging (C11-20) which were similar quality to pharmaceutical grade of petroleum wax. The spent catalysts of Al-MCM-41 series gradually decreased in wax yield and paraffins composition during the sequential MLP pyrolysis; however, the activity of catalysts was recovered after calcination of the spent catalysts. Background: Budesonide and tixocortol pivalate as markers of contact allergy to corticosteroids have been questioned, as they are not able to detect a significant percentage of allergic patients. Objectives: To investigate the potential role of clobetasol propionate in enhancing corticosteroid sensitisation detection. Methods: Between January 2022 and December 2023, patients who attended centres involved in the Spanish Registry of Research in Contact Dermatitis and Cutaneous Allergy were tested with an extended baseline series that included budesonide, tixocortol pivalate, clobetasol propionate 0.1% in ethanol and 1% in petrolatum. Results: A total of 4338 patients were tested. Twenty‐four patients were allergic to budesonide (0.55%, 95% CI: 0.37–0.82); nine patients were allergic to tixocortol pivalate (0.21%, 95% CI: 0.11–0.39); and 23 patients were allergic to clobetasol (0.53%, 95% CI: 0.35–0.79). Only four of those patients allergic to clobetasol were detected by budesonide and one by tixocortol pivalate. No significant differences in the number of positive tests were found between clobetasol in petrolatum or ethanol. Conclusions: In Spain budesonide remains the main corticosteroid allergy marker whereas the role of tixocortol pivalate is questionable. Objective: Atopic dermatitis (AD) is characterized by compositional and structural changes to the skin at lesional sites. Alteration to the levels and organization of both protein and lipid components are associated with disease status and lead to impaired barrier and hydration. Corneodesmosin (CDSN) and the arrangement and length of the intercellular lipid lamellae (ICLL) are altered in disrupted skin states. The aim of this research was to profile the distribution of CDSN and the ICLL in the stratum corneum (SC) at lesional and non‐lesional sites in AD‐prone skin and to investigate the impact of an eczema calming lotion containing petroleum jelly, fatty acids, and colloidal oatmeal. Methods: An IRB‐approved study was conducted with participants with active AD. From a small subset of participants, tape strips were collected from lesional and non‐lesional sites on the arm, prior to and after twice daily application, over 4 weeks of an eczema calming lotion containing petroleum jelly, fatty acids, and colloidal oatmeal. Fluorescent antibody staining was used to investigate the distribution of CDSN. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) was used to characterize the ICLL. Results: The distribution/coverage of CDSN was similar between lesional and non‐lesional sites at baseline; application of the lotion resulted in a more defined honeycomb/peripheral distribution. Normalized ICLL (nICLL) was lower in baseline samples from lesional sites relative to non‐lesional sites. Application of the lotion increased this parameter by the end of the study at all sites. Conclusion: The eczema calming lotion containing petroleum jelly, fatty acids and colloidal oatmeal provided changes in corneodesmosomal proteins distribution and ICLL, consistent with improvements in corneocyte maturation and improved barrier function in the skin of individuals with atopic dermatitis. Background/objective: Despite the high efficacy of using Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) in reversing upper airway obstruction in obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), the efficiency of this treatment is limited due to the low adherence. Mask pressure is suggested to play a significant role in adherence. In this study, we intend to investigate the effect of Lidocaine-prilocaine cream CPAP mask on pressure sensation. Methods: In this study, 75 patients referred to CPAP titration were divided into three groups. In groups one and two, Lidocaine-prilocaine cream and Petroleum jelly were used respectively. The third group had no intervention. Results: VAS discomfort immediately (VAS0), after 15 min (VAS15), and the next day (VAS all) in three groups were compared. VAS0, VAS15, and VAS all were not significantly different among the three groups (P > 0.05). Among participants with VAS0 above 5, VAS15 was significantly lower in intervention groups than the control group (P < 0.05). Conclusion: This study shows that both Petroleum jelly and Lidocaine-prilocaine cream can be used for decreasing pressure sensation during CPAP titration among patients who suffer excessive facial discomfort immediately after putting on a CPAP mask. Introduction: Allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) to salicylic acid (SA) is widely unreported. Furthermore, cross‐reactivity between SA and other salicylates has not been reported despite well‐documented in‐group salicylate cross‐reactivity. Objective: To describe our clinic's experience patch testing to SA, highlighting seven cases of relevant reactions and concomitant reactivity with other salicylates. Methods: Results of patch testing to 5% SA in petrolatum between 1 January 2020, and 9 February 2024, are reported. Seven cases of relevant reactions to SA are detailed. Results: A total of 489 patients (27.5%) were tested to SA, 21 of which were positive: 7 doubtful (+/−), 14 weak positive (+), and no strong/extreme positive reactions. Four irritant reactions were documented. Of the 14 weak positive (+) reactions, 7 had definite or probable clinical relevance, 5 of which also reacted to other salicylates. Conclusions: ACD to SA is likely underreported due to a lack of testing. In our experience, testing SA 5% petrolatum is tolerable without significant irritation. Cross‐reactivity between SA and other salicylates is probable. Though SA appears to be the primary sensitizer in some cases, more studies are needed to understand its possible role as a marker for salicylate allergy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

[Display omitted] Recent advances have been made in elastocapillarity; reversible 3D deformations of solid substrates with low elastic moduli from the surface tension of deposited drops. This study explores permanent deformations caused by liquid drops on immiscible yield stress substrates. We hypothesize that the substrate's rheological properties play a major role in determining the shape and stability of the drop-substrate interface, and govern partial or full embedding into the substrate. Substrate yield stress magnitudes are modified through altering the mixture ratios of petroleum jelly to paraffin oil. Water drops are deposited on substrates and deformation profiles of the deformed interface are quantified. Above a critical Bingham-Capillary number, which characterizes the ratio of yield stress magnitude to surface tension, deposited water drops deform the substrate surface permanently, but minimally. Below this value, drops become increasingly embedded as the substrate yield stress magnitude decreases, with larger indentation depths and increased circumferential ridge heights. With sufficiently low yield stress magnitudes, where surface tension forces dominate over yield stress forces, the plastically deformed ridges fully encapsulate the liquid drop surface, resulting in full drop embedding within the substrate. These results advance knowledge of interfacial wetting on soft yield stress substrates and has implications for binary fluids, functional materials, and new drug delivery systems. The process of getting petroleum ceresins by deoiling residual dewaxing raffinates with solvents was investigated. The relationships between the key ceresin quality and deoiling process parameters, such as composition and solvent to feedstock ratio, final cooling and filtration temperatures, and number of deoiling stages were determined. Aim: Incontinence-associated dermatitis is a common health problem among older clinical patients, causing related severe skin damage such as pressure ulcers, secondary infection, and long length of hospital stay. This pilot study aimed to develop and examine the effects of nursing programs in preventing incontinence-associated dermatitis (IAD) among older patients. Ten older patients at high risk of incontinence-associated dermatitis were included in this study: five patients received a nursing program combined with mixed products, and another five received a nursing program combined with separate use of products. The program was evaluated using a perianal assessment tool (PAT-T) for risk assessment, the incontinence-associated dermatitis invention tool (IADIT-T) for severity assessment, the skin surface pH, and skin surface moisture. The results revealed that the nursing program and skin products are usable and acceptable, provide step-by-step details, and are simple and easy to follow. The nursing program combined with using zinc oxide products followed by petroleum jelly can prevent and decrease the severity of incontinence-associated dermatitis in older patients. Moreover, it can also improve the skin surface pH to a mild acidity appropriate for the skin condition and increase the skin's moisture better the nursing program with mixed skin products. This pilot study confirmed that the developed program can be applied in practice. Moreover, the program could be used to decrease the incidence of IAD and skin surface pH but increase skin moisture. However, future study with a larger sample size and applying a more substantial research design for more accuracy and generalization is needed. Although laurocapram (Azone) significantly enhances the skin permeation of drugs, its development was hindered by its skin irritation. We then developed an Azone-mimic ionic liquid (IL-Azone), composed of less irritating cationic ε -caprolactam and anionic myristic acid. IL-Azone dissociates to the original cation and anion in the presence of water in the formulation. We tried to select a formulation suitable for IL-Azone in the present study. Each formulation contained 5 % of either Azone or IL-Azone along with the model drug antipyrine, and skin permeation experiments of the drug were conducted. The results revealed that IL-Azone did not enhance skin permeation when combined with most formulations tested. However, a notable and rapid enhancement in skin permeation was observed when combined with white petrolatum. This effect could be attributed to the minimal water content in white petrolatum, which prevented IL-Azone degradation. Furthermore, its permeation-enhancing effects from IL-Azone in white petrolatum were more pronounced and rapid than Azone. The rapid onset observed with IL-Azone can be attributed to its degradation into its original components at the interface between the stratum corneum and the living epidermis, which results in a shorter lag time before achieving a steady-state concentration in the SC compared to Azone. In this study, three different oil (black seed, St. John's Wort, and grape seed oils [GSO]) oleogels, which are especially used in complementary medicine, were produced with natural waxes (sunflower and beeswax [BW]). The physicochemical, textural, thermal, and structural features and volatile composition of the oleogels were determined and compared with commercial petrolatum gels (control sample). The sunflower and BW gels had a higher melting point than the petrolatum gels. Particularly, the firmness values of the fresh sunflower and BW oleogels were close to the petrolatum gels, except for the BW‐based St John's Wort and GSO gels. The firmness and stickiness values of the oleogels and the control samples increased in relation to the storage period. The increase in firmness value was less in the sunflower wax than in the BW and control samples. All sunflower, BW and petrolatum gels exhibited the β′ form. Volatile component data showed that different waxes have different volatile adsorption capacities. As a result, natural wax oleogels produced with various essential oils could be an alternative to similar products used in the cosmetics, pharmacology, and food supplement industries, which are already commercially available. In this way, oleogels are considered an alternative to solid fat such as margarine, butter, and shortening and an oil‐restricting agent against oil leakage in oil‐based foods. Allergen immunotherapy (AIT) is the only disease-modifying treatment for immunoglobulin (Ig) E-mediated allergy. Owing to the high prevalence and early onset of hay fever and pollen-food allergy syndrome (PFAS), a safer and simpler treatment method than conventional AIT is needed. To develop a local nasal immunotherapy using an ointment containing hypoallergenic pollen and assess its efficacy in mice and healthy humans. Hypoallergenicity was achieved by combining pollen and galactomannan through the Maillard reaction to create birch pollen-galactomannan conjugate (BP-GMC). The binding of galactomannan to Bet v 1 was confirmed using electrophoresis and Western blotting (WB). Binding of specific IgE antibodies to BP-GMC was verified using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and basophil activation test (BAT). The localization of BP-GMC absorption was confirmed using a BALB/c mouse model. BP-GMC mixed with white petrolatum was intranasally administered to 10 healthy individuals (active drugs, 8; placebo, 2) for 14 days. In electrophoresis and WB, no 17-kDa band was observed. In ELISA and BAT, BP-GMC did not react to specific IgE but was bound to IgA and IgG. In the mouse model, BP-GMC was detected in nasopharyngeal-associated lymphoid tissues. In the active drug group, the salivary-specific IgA level significantly increased on day 15 (p = 0.0299), while the serum-specific IgG level significantly increased on day 85 (p = 0.0006). The BP-GMC ointment rapidly produced antagonistic antibodies against IgE; it is safe and easy to use and might serve as a therapeutic antigen for hay fever and PFAS. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Petrolatum, also known as petroleum jelly, is a widely used topical agent, with a variety of uses in dermatology. Despite its popularity, many myths surround this ubiquitous dermatologic staple. This review details the history of petrolatum and how it is manufactured as well as how its biologic properties make it a great moisturizer. Additionally, data on its potential for flammability, allergenicity, and comedogenicity are detailed, dispelling misconceptions about petrolatum use around oxygen and as a cause of acne. The uses and benefits of petrolatum in dermatology are wide-ranging—a patch test instrument, a vehicle for medicated ointments, and a wound care essential. Background and Aims: To assess patient comfort, wound healing, and scarring at the 6‐month follow‐up of split‐skin graft donor sites treated with Ba‐Hao burn ointment (BHBO) gauze, a compound preparation of traditional Chinese medicine since 1970s, compared with petrolatum gauze. Methods: Thirty patients admitted to the Department of Burns of the First Affiliated Hospital of Anhui Medical University between September 2021 and September 2022 participated in this randomized, prospective, self‐control clinical study. After harvesting the split skin, donor sites were divided into two parts along the midline. BHBO gauze was applied to half of the donor wounds, and petrolatum gauze was applied to the other half. The wound healing time, pain scores on the postoperative Days 3, 6, and 9, and Vancouver Scar Scale (VSS) score at the 6‐month follow‐up were assessed. Results: The wound healing time was significantly shorter in the BHBO group than in the control group (10.07 ± 1.48 days vs. 11.50 ± 1.74 days, p < 0.001). On postoperative Days 3 and 6, the pain scores quantified by visual analog scores were significantly lower in the BHBO group than in the control group (5.33 ± 1.54 and 4.17 ± 1.51, respectively vs. 7.57 ± 1.41 and 5.20 ± 1.47, respectively). The difference in the visual analog scale score on postoperative Day 9 between the groups was not significant (p > 0.05). Microbiological assessment revealed the absence of bacterial contamination in both groups. At the 6‐month follow up, the VSS score was significantly lower in the BHBO group (6.67 ± 1.92) than in the control group (9.57 ± 1.55). Conclusion: BHBO resulted in faster donor‐site healing, reduced postoperative pain, and improved scar quality at the 6‐month follow‐up than petrolatum gauze alone. Moisturization causes physiological changes that improve the barrier function of human skin and mechanical changes, including skin friction characteristics. This study evaluated petrolatum-or silicone oiltreated human skin to determine the effect of moisturizing on the friction dynamics. The friction force on the human skin was measured using a contact probe with a sinusoidal motion. The contact probe was used to rub the skin of the upper arm of 20 subjects. The water content of the stratum corneum, softness, and barrier function of the skin were measured using a corneometer, cutometer, and tewameter, respectively. Both oils reduce the frictional force on the human skin. Simultaneously, silicone oil also reduced the delay time d, which is the standardized time difference between the frictional force response to contact probe movement. Three typical friction patterns were also discovered, which were significantly changed by the treatment with oil. These changes were attributed to the lubrication effect and elimination of adhesion at the true contact point between the skin and the contact probe. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The combination of hyaluronic acid and iodine (Hyodine) has sparked interest in wound care and could have valuable applications in treating burn injuries. We aimed to provide valuable insight into the potential advantages, limitations, and implications of using Hyodine in burn wound management. We studied 25 male rats to assess the clinical outcomes and wound‐healing effects of Hyodine. Each rat received a deep second‐degree burn wound on their back using metal stamps. Subsequently, the rats were then randomly split into two groups. The first group was treated with a layer of Hyodine gel, while the second group received Vaseline. The burn sites were photographed on days 1, 7, 14, and 21 using a digital camera. After excision of the burn wounds, histopathology slides were stained and evaluated in terms of the degree of epithelialization, angiogenesis, inflammatory cells' infiltration, and collagen amount and arrangement. Despite a non‐significant difference regarding the extent of burn wound area between intervention and control groups in the first day of experiment, the rats that were treated with Vaseline showed a significant decrease compared to those who received Hyodine in the second and third weeks (p = 0.02). On the other hand, epithelialization, pathology score, and collagen synthesis were significantly different between days 7, 14, and 21 of each group. However, collagen arrangement and neovascularization were only significantly different between days 7, 14, and 21 in Hyodine group (p = 0.02 and p = 0.03, respectively). The Hyodine gel may offer beneficial outcomes in patients with a burn wound. Based on our findings, despite a non‐significant difference in the extent of burn wound area, using Hyodine revealed a significant improvement in different histopathological variables including neovascularization, and collagen arrangement. Dendrobium officinale Kinura et Migo (DOKM) has a variety of medicinal applications; however, its ability to promote wound healing has not been previously reported. The purpose of this study is to investigate the proliferative phase of the wound−healing effect of DOKM glycoprotein (DOKMG) in rats and to elucidate its mechanism of action in vitro. In the present study, the ointment mixture containing DOKMG was applied to the dorsal skin wounds of the full‐thickness skin excision rat model, and the results showed that the wound healing speed was faster in the proliferative phase than vaseline. Histological analysis demonstrates that DOKMG promoted the re‐epithelialization of wound skin. Immunofluorescence staining and quantitative polymerase chain reaction assays revealed that DOKMG promotes the secretion of Fibronectin and inhibits the secretion of Collagen IV during the granulation tissue formation period, indicating that DOKMG could accelerate the formation of granulation tissue by precisely regulating extracellular matrix (ECM) secretion. In addition, we demonstrated that DOKMG enhanced the migration and proliferation of fibroblast (3T6 cell) in two‐dimensional trauma by regulating the secretion of ECM, via a mechanism that may implicate the AKT and JAK/STAT pathways under the control of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) signalling. In summary, we have demonstrated that DOKMG promotes wound healing during the proliferative phase. Background: The effectiveness of moisturizers in preventing infant atopic dermatitis (AD) remains unclear. We previously showed that using 2e moisturizer of commercial moisturizer (Shiseido Japan Co., Ltd.) at least once a day significantly prevented AD in infants as compared with as‐needed petroleum jelly. This trial aimed to determine the effectiveness of twice‐ or once‐daily application of Fam's Baby moisturizer (Fam's Inc.) in preventing AD compared with once‐daily 2e moisturizer. Methods: This trial was a single‐centre, three‐parallel‐group, assessor‐blinded, superiority, individually randomized, controlled, phase II trial that was conducted from 25 August 2020 to 28 September 2021. We randomly assigned 60 newborns with at least one parent or sibling who has AD to receive Fam's Baby moisturizer twice daily (Group A) or once daily (Group B), or 2e once daily (Group C) in a 1:1:1 ratio until they were 32 weeks old. The primary outcome was the time of AD onset. Results: Atopic dermatitis was observed in 11/20 (55%), 5/20 (25%) and 10/20 (50%), infants in Groups A, B and C, respectively. Cumulative incidence values for AD according to the Kaplan–Meier method showed that infants in Group B tended to maintain an intact skin for a longer period than those in Group C (median time, not reached [NR] vs. 212 days, log‐rank test, p = 0.064). Cox regression analysis showed that the risk of AD tended to be lower in Group B (hazard ratio with group C as control, 0.36; 95% confidential intervals: 0.12–1.06). No serious adverse events occurred in any of the enrolled infants. Conclusion: Fam's Baby moisturizer may better prevent AD than 2e. Further large‐scale trials should be performed to confirm the efficacy of Fam's Baby moisturizer in preventing AD in infants. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, a planar microstrip patch antenna operating in FCC MBAN for tumor detection is presented. The proposed antenna is constructed using a triangle-shaped patch with inset feeding. It is fabricated on an Arlon AD1000 substrate. Some of the parameters are assumed, and optimization is carried out to achieve greater performance. This prototype is placed on a human tissue mimicking model and simulated considering the cases of body model with tumor and without tumor. The designed antenna resonates at 2.37 GHz with 10 dB bandwidth of 3MHz meeting the requirements specified by the FCC. Further, the introduction of a slot in the ground plane gives a half power beamwidth of 20.6 with directivity of 8 dB. This narrow beam is suitable for scanning application in microwave imaging. The fabrication of the antenna is carried out, and measurements are done to assess the performance of the antenna. Body phantom is created using petroleum jelly and mixture of wheat flour and water. Retinoids are used topically as well as orally, and the most commonly used oral retinoids are isotretinoin and acitretin. Mucocutaneous adverse effects are frequently seen with the use of systemic retinoids, the most common being cheilitis, which is dose-dependent and seen in almost all patients using it. To study the comparative effect of topical tacrolimus 0.1% ointment versus topical white soft petrolatum jelly in the treatment of cheilitis due to retinoids. A total of 26 patients with cheilitis post-treatment with isotretinoin were enrolled in this cross-sectional study conducted over a period of 6 months. They were randomized into two groups of 13 patients each to receive topical tacrolimus 0.1% ointment and soft petrolatum jelly twice daily, respectively. Patients were followed up weekly with clinical photographs. Resolution of cheilitis was assessed on the basis of photograph and ICGS score. About 84.6% of patients of group A and 53.8% of patients of group B showed resolution of symptoms within 1 week of treatment. A significant difference was seen in duration for complete cheilitis resolution and relapse rate in the two groups. Our study concludes that oral retinoid-induced cheilitis shows faster and more significant resolution with twice-daily topical tacrolimus 0.1% ointment application compared to twice-daily topical petrolatum jelly.
