Search

The field of exoplanetary science is making rapid progress both in statistical studies of exoplanet properties as well as in individual characterization. As space missions provide an emerging picture of formation and evolution of exoplanetary systems, the search for habitable worlds becomes one of the fundamental issues to address. To tackle such a complex challenge, we need to specify the conditions favorable for the origin, development and sustainment of life as we know it. This requires the understanding of global (astrospheric) and local (atmospheric, surface and internal) environments of exoplanets in the framework of the physical processes of the interaction between evolving planet-hosting stars along with exoplanetary evolution over geological timescales, and the resulting impact on climate and habitability of exoplanets. Feedbacks between astrophysical, physico-chemical atmospheric and geological processes can only be understood through interdisciplinary studies with the incorporation of progress in heliophysics, astrophysics, planetary, Earth sciences, astrobiology, and the origin of life communities. The assessment of the impacts of host stars on the climate and habitability of terrestrial (exo)planets and potential exomoons around them may significantly modify the extent and the location of the habitable zone and provide new directions for searching for signatures of life. Thus, characterization of stellar ionizing outputs becomes an important task for further understanding the extent of habitability in the universe. Charge exchange (CX) is an important process in shock physics since it indicates an interaction between downstream ions and ambient neutral hydrogen, suggesting a presence of a collisionless shock. We present a high-resolution spectroscopy of an X-ray bright spot in a nearby supernova remnant (SNR), the Cygnus Loop, with the Reflection Grating Spectrometer (RGS) onboard XMM-Newton. The target is a compact knotty structure called "southwestern knot (SW-K)" located at the outer edge of the shell, where the blast wave is likely interacting with dense surrounding materials. The RGS spectrum of the SW-K shows details of the line features below ~ 1 keV, where we discover a high forbidden-to-resonance line ratio of OVII He$\alpha$. The soft-band (10-35 \AA) spectrum is well explained by a thermal component with a CX X-ray emission obscured by neutral and ionized absorbers. The presence of the CX X-ray emission will provide new insights into the shock physics of SNRs. The high-resolution spectroscopy also reveals that the CNO, Ne and Fe abundances are truly lower than the solar values (0.2-0.4 solar) at the SW-K region . The youngest Galactic supernova remnant (SNR) G1.9+0.3, produced by a (probable) SN Ia that exploded $\sim 1900$ CE, is strongly asymmetric at radio wavelengths, much brighter in the north, but bilaterally symmetric in X-rays. We present the results of X-ray expansion measurements that illuminate the origin of the radio asymmetry. We confirm the mean expansion rate (2011 to 2015) of 0.58% per year, but large spatial variations are present. Using the nonparametric "Demons" method, we measure the velocity field throughout the entire SNR, finding that motions vary by a factor of 5, from 0.09" to 0.44" per year. The slowest shocks are at the outer boundary of the bright northern radio rim, with velocities $v_s$ as low as 3,600 km/s (for an assumed distance of 8.5 kpc), much less than $v_s = 12,000 - 13,000$ km/s along the X-ray-bright major axis. Such strong deceleration of the northern blast wave most likely arises from the collision of SN ejecta with a much denser than average ambient medium there. This asymmetric ambient medium naturally explains the radio asymmetry. In several locations, significant morphological changes and strongly nonradial motions are apparent. The spatially-integrated X-ray flux continues to increase with time. Based on Chandra observations spanning 8.3 years, we measure its increase at 1.3% +/- 0.8% per year. Gamma Cassiopeiae is an enigmatic Be star with unusually strong hard X-ray emission. The Suzaku observatory detected six rapid X-ray spectral hardening events called "softness dips" in a ~100 ksec duration observation in 2011. All the softness dip events show symmetric softness ratio variations, and some of them have flat bottoms apparently due to saturation. The softness dip spectra are best described by either ~40% or ~70% partial covering absorption to kT ~12 keV plasma emission by matter with a neutral hydrogen column density of ~2-8e21 cm-2, while the spectrum outside of these dips is almost free of absorption. This result suggests the presence of two distinct X-ray emitting spots in the gamma Cas system, perhaps on a white dwarf companion with dipole mass accretion. The partial covering absorbers may be blobs in the Be stellar wind, the Be disk, or rotating around the white dwarf companion. Weak correlations of the softness ratios to the hard X-ray flux suggest the presence of stable plasmas at kT ~0.9 and 5 keV, which may originate from the Be or white dwarf winds. We have imaged GM Aur with HST, detected its disk in scattered light at 1400A and 1650A, and compared these with observations at 3300A, 5550A, 1.1 microns, and 1.6 microns. The scattered light increases at shorter wavelengths. The radial surface brightness profile at 3300A shows no evidence of the 24AU radius cavity that has been previously observed in sub-mm observations. Comparison with dust grain opacity models indicates the surface of the entire disk is populated with sub-micron grains. We have compiled an SED from 0.1 microns to 1 mm, and used it to constrain a model of the star+disk system that includes the sub-mm cavity using the Monte Carlo Radiative Transfer code by Barbara Whitney. The best-fit model image indicates that the cavity should be detectable in the F330W bandpass if the cavity has been cleared of both large and small dust grains, but we do not detect it. The lack of an observed cavity can be explained by the presence of sub-microns grains interior to the sub-mm cavity wall. We suggest one explanation for this which could be due to a planet of mass <9 Jupiter masses interior to 24 AU. A unique cylindrical structure is detected in the FUV data from the Advanced Camera for Surveys/Solar Blind Channel. It is aligned along the system semi-minor axis, but does not resemble an accretion-driven jet. The structure is limb-brightened and extends 190 +/- 35 AU above the disk midplane. The inner radius of the limb-brightening is 40 +/- 10 AU, just beyond the sub-millimeter cavity wall., Comment: 40 pages, 11 figures, 4 tables, accepted to ApJ

We present the results of a broad-band X-ray study of the enigmatic Be star Gamma Cassiopeiae (herein gamma Cas) based on observations made with both the Suzaku and INTEGRAL observatories. gamma Cas has long been recognized as the prototypical example of a small subclass of Be stars with moderately strong X-ray emission dominated by a hot thermal component in the 0.5-12 keV energy range Lx ~ 10^32 - 10^33 erg s^-1. This places them at the high end of the known luminosity distribution for stellar emission, but several orders of magnitude below typical accretion powered Be X-ray binaries. The INTEGRAL observations spanned an 8 year baseline and represent the deepest measurement to date at energies above ~50 keV. We find that the INTEGRAL data are consistent within statistics to a constant intensity source above 20 keV, with emission extending up to ~100 keV and that searches for all of the previously reported periodicities of the system at lower energies led to null results. We further find that our combined Suzaku and INTEGRAL spectrum, which we suggest is the most accurate broad-band X-ray measurement of gamma Cas to date, is fitted extremely well with a thermal plasma emission model with a single absorption component. We found no compelling need for an additional non-thermal high-energy component. We report measurements of X-ray expansion of the youngest Galactic supernova remnant, G1.9+0.3, using Chandra observations in 2007, 2009, and 2011. The measured rates strongly deviate from uniform expansion, decreasing radially by about 60% along the X-ray bright SE-NW axis from 0.84% +/- 0.06% per yr to 0.52% +/- 0.03% per yr. This corresponds to undecelerated ages of 120-190 yr, confirming the young age of G1.9+0.3, and implying a significant deceleration of the blast wave. The synchrotron-dominated X-ray emission brightens at a rate of 1.9% +/- 0.4% per yr. We identify bright outer and inner rims with the blast wave and reverse shock, respectively. Sharp density gradients in either ejecta or ambient medium are required to produce the sudden deceleration of the reverse shock or the blast wave implied by the large spread in expansion ages. The blast wave could have been decelerated recently by an encounter with a modest density discontinuity in the ambient medium, such as found at a wind termination shock, requiring strong mass loss in the progenitor. Alternatively, the reverse shock might have encountered an order-of-magnitude density discontinuity within the ejecta, such as found in pulsating delayed-detonation Type Ia models. We demonstrate that the blast wave is much more decelerated than the reverse shock in these models for remnants at ages similar to G1.9+0.3. Similar effects may also be produced by dense shells possibly associated with high-velocity features in Type Ia spectra. The study of both supernova remnants and the hot and cold phases of the interstellar medium are essential for understanding the final stages of stellar evolution and their feedback on the evolution of galaxies through injection of energy and heavy elements. These studies are also crucial for understanding the physics of supernovae, their cosmological implication, and the origin of galactic cosmic rays. The unique capabilities of Athena+ will allow us to explore a new parameter space. Spatially-resolved high-resolution spectroscopy using Athena+ X-IFU of young remnants will allow to characterize individual parcels of ejected material in the line of sight in terms of kinematics, ionization and composition, providing access to the three dimensional geometry of the explosion. Athena+ will also allow studying shock physics and particle acceleration in supernova remnants, as well as their interaction with their environment. Athena+ X-IFU will also characterize the ionization mechanisms competing in forming the complex structures of the hot interstellar medium, likely to keep the echo of past star formation activity, both in our Galaxy and nearby ones. For the first time the dust and gas of the densest cold medium, like in the Galactic Centre environment, will be studied. Athena+ X-IFU will observe, along with the Mg K and Si K edges, which are the main tracers of the silicates content of the ISM, the Fe K edge with unprecedented sensitivity and energy-resolution. G1.9+0.3 is the youngest known Galactic supernova remnant (SNR), with an estimated supernova (SN) explosion date of about 1900, and most likely located near the Galactic Center. Only the outermost ejecta layers with free-expansion velocities larger than about 18,000 km/s have been shocked so far in this dynamically young, likely Type Ia SNR. A long (980 ks) Chandra observation in 2011 allowed spatially-resolved spectroscopy of heavy-element ejecta. We denoised Chandra data with the spatio-spectral method of Krishnamurthy et al., and used a wavelet-based technique to spatially localize thermal emission produced by intermediate-mass elements (IMEs: Si and S) and iron. The spatial distribution of both IMEs and Fe is extremely asymmetric, with the strongest ejecta emission in the northern rim. Fe Kalpha emission is particularly prominent there, and fits with thermal models indicate strongly oversolar Fe abundances. In a localized, outlying region in the northern rim, IMEs are less abundant than Fe, indicating that undiluted Fe-group elements (including 56Ni) with velocities larger than 18,000 km/s were ejected by this SN. But in the inner west rim, we find Si- and S-rich ejecta without any traces of Fe, so high-velocity products of O-burning were also ejected. G1.9+0.3 appears similar to energetic Type Ia SNe such as SN 2010jn where iron-group elements at such high free-expansion velocities have been recently detected. The pronounced asymmetry in the ejecta distribution and abundance inhomogeneities are best explained by a strongly asymmetric SN explosion, similar to those produced in some recent 3D delayed-detonation Type Ia models., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, submitted to ApJ Letters

PDS 144 is a pair of Herbig Ae stars that are separated by 5.35" on the sky. It has previously been shown to have an A2Ve Herbig Ae star viewed at 83\circ inclination as its northern member and an A5Ve Herbig Ae star as its southern member. Direct imagery revealed a disk occulting PDS 144 N - the first edge-on disk observed around a Herbig Ae star. The lack of an obvious disk in direct imagery suggested PDS 144 S might be viewed face-on or not physically associated with PDS 144 N. Multi-epoch Hubble Space Telescope imagery of PDS 144 with a 5 year baseline demonstrates PDS 144 N & S are comoving and have a common proper motion with TYC 6782-878-1. TYC 6782-878-1 has previously been identified as a member of Upper Sco sub-association A at d = 145 \pm 2 pc with an age of 5-10 Myr. Ground-based imagery reveals jets and a string of Herbig-Haro knots extending 13' (possibly further) which are aligned to within 7\circ \pm 6\circ on the sky. By combining proper motion data and the absence of a dark mid-plane with radial velocity data, we measure the inclination of PDS 144 S to be i = 73\circ \pm 7\circ. The radial velocity of the jets from PDS 144 N & S indicates they, and therefore their disks, are misaligned by 25\circ \pm 9\circ. This degree of misalignment is similar to that seen in T Tauri wide binaries., Comment: 18 pages, 5 figures, 2 tables

We present a measurement of the expansion and brightening of G1.9+0.3, the youngest Galactic supernova remnant, comparing Chandra X-ray images obtained in 2007 and 2009. A simple uniform expansion model describes the data well, giving an expansion rate of 0.642 +/- 0.049 % yr^-1, and a flux increase of 1.7 +/- 1.0 % yr^-1. Without deceleration, the remnant age would then be 156 +/- 11 yr, consistent with earlier results. Since deceleration must have occurred, this age is an upper limit; we estimate an age of about 110 yr, or an explosion date of about 1900. The flux increase is comparable to reported increases at radio wavelengths. G1.9+0.3 is the only Galactic supernova remnant increasing in flux, with implications for the physics of electron acceleration in shock waves, Comment: 14 pages, 3 figures. Accepted by ApJ (Letters)

Tracing the formation and evolution of all supermassive black holes, including the obscured ones, understanding how black holes influence their surroundings and how matter behaves under extreme conditions, are recognized as key science objectives to be addressed by the next generation of instruments. These are the main goals of the COSPIX proposal, made to ESA in December 2010 in the context of its call for selection of the M3 mission. In addition, COSPIX, will also provide key measurements on the non thermal Universe, particularly in relation to the question of the acceleration of particles, as well as on many other fundamental questions as for example the energetic particle content of clusters of galaxies. COSPIX is proposed as an observatory operating from 0.3 to more than 100 keV. The payload features a single long focal length focusing telescope offering an effective area close to ten times larger than any scheduled focusing mission at 30 keV, an angular resolution better than 20 arcseconds in hard X-rays, and polarimetric capabilities within the same focal plane instrumentation. High-energy astrophysics is a relatively young scientific field, made possible by space-borne telescopes. During the half-century history of x-ray astronomy, the sensitivity of focusing x-ray telescopes-through finer angular resolution and increased effective area-has improved by a factor of a 100 million. This technological advance has enabled numerous exciting discoveries and increasingly detailed study of the high-energy universe-including accreting (stellar-mass and super-massive) black holes, accreting and isolated neutron stars, pulsar-wind nebulae, shocked plasma in supernova remnants, and hot thermal plasma in clusters of galaxies. As the largest structures in the universe, galaxy clusters constitute a unique laboratory for measuring the gravitational effects of dark matter and of dark energy. Here, we review the history of high-resolution x-ray telescopes and highlight some of the scientific results enabled by these telescopes. Next, we describe the planned next-generation x-ray-astronomy facility-the International X-ray Observatory (IXO). We conclude with an overview of a concept for the next next-generation facility-Generation X. The scientific objectives of such a mission will require very large areas (about 10000 m2) of highly-nested lightweight grazing-incidence mirrors with exceptional (about 0.1-arcsecond) angular resolution. Suzaku X-ray observations of a young supernova remnant, Cassiopeia A, were carried out. K-shell transition lines from highly ionized ions of various elements were detected, including Chromium (Cr-Kalpha at 5.61 keV). The X-ray continuum spectra were modeled in the 3.4--40 keV band, summed over the entire remnant, and were fitted with a simplest combination of the thermal bremsstrahlung and the non-thermal cut-off power-law models. The spectral fits with this assumption indicate that the continuum emission is likely to be dominated by the non-thermal emission with a cut-off energy at > 1 keV. The thermal-to-nonthermal fraction of the continuum flux in the 4-10 keV band is best estimated as ~0.1. Non-thermal-dominated continuum images in the 4--14 keV band were made. The peak of the non-thermal X-rays appears at the western part. The peak position of the TeV gamma-rays measured with HEGRA and MAGIC is also shifted at the western part with the 1-sigma confidence. Since the location of the X-ray continuum emission was known to be presumably identified with the reverse shock region, the possible keV-TeV correlations give a hint that the accelerated multi-TeV hadrons in Cassiopeia A are dominated by heavy elements in the reverse shock region., Comment: Publ. We searched for evidence of line emission around 4keV from the northwestern rim of the supernova remnant RX J0852.0-4622 using Suzaku XIS data. Several papers have reported the detection of an emission line around 4.1keV from this region of the sky. This line would arise from K-band fluorescence by Sc, the immediate decay product of 44Ti. We performed spectral analysis for the entire portion of the NW rim of the remnant within the XIS field of view, as well as various regions corresponding to regions of published claims of line emission. We found no line emission around 4.1keV anywhere, and are able to set a restrictive upper limit to the X-ray flux: 1.1x10^-6 s^-1 cm^-2 for the entire field. For every region, our flux upper limit falls below that of the previously claimed detection. Therefore, we conclude that, to date, no definite X-ray line feature from Sc-K emission has been detected in the NW rim of RX J0852.0-4622. Our negative-detection supports the recent claim that RX J0852-4622 is neither young (1700--4000 yr) nor nearby(~750 pc)., Comment: Published in PASJ

The discovery of the youngest Galactic supernova remnant (SNR) G1.9+0.3 has allowed a look at a stage of SNR evolution never before observed. We analyze the 50 ks Chandra observation with particular regard to spectral variations. The very high column density ($N_H \sim 6 \times 10^{22}$ cm$^{-2}$) implies that dust scattering is important, and we use a simple scattering model in our spectral analysis. The integrated X-ray spectrum of G1.9+0.3 is well described by synchrotron emission from a power-law electron distribution with an exponential cutoff. Using our measured radio flux and including scattering effects, we find a rolloff frequency of $5.4 (3.0, 10.2) \times 10^{17}$ Hz ($h \nu_{\rm roll} = 2.2$ keV). Including scattering in a two-region model gives lower values of \nu_roll by over a factor of 2. Dividing G1.9+0.3 into six regions, we find a systematic pattern in which spectra are hardest (highest \nu_roll) in the bright SE and NW limbs of the shell. They steepen as one moves around the shell or into the interior. The extensions beyond the bright parts of the shell have the hardest spectra of all. We interpret the results in terms of dependence of shock acceleration properties on the obliquity angle $\theta_{\rm Bn}$ between the shock velocity and a fairly uniform upstream magnetic field. This interpretation probably requires a Type Ia event. If electron acceleration is limited by synchrotron losses, the spectral variations require obliquity-dependence of the acceleration rate independent of the magnetic-field strength., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures; accepted for ApJ Letters

HD 100453 has an IR spectral energy distribution (SED) which can be fit with a power-law plus a blackbody. Previous analysis of the SED suggests that the system is a young Herbig Ae star with a gas-rich, flared disk. We reexamine the evolutionary state of the HD 100453 system by refining its age (based on a candidate low-mass companion) and by examining limits on the disk extent, mass accretion rate, and gas content of the disk environment. We confirm that HD 100453B is a common proper motion companion to HD 100453A, with a spectral type of M4.0V - M4.5V, and derive an age of 10 +/- 2 Myr. We find no evidence of mass accretion onto the star. Chandra ACIS-S imagery shows that the Herbig Ae star has L_X/L_Bol and an X-ray spectrum similar to non-accreting Beta Pic Moving Group early F stars. Moreover, the disk lacks the conspicuous Fe II emission and excess FUV continuum seen in spectra of actively accreting Herbig Ae stars, and from the FUV continuum, we find the accretion rate is < 1.4x10^-9 M_Sun yr^-1. A sensitive upper limit to the CO J = 3-2 intensity indicates that the gas in the outer disk is likely optically thin. Assuming a [CO]/[H2] abundance of 1x10^-4 and a depletion factor of 10^3, we find that the mass of cold molecular gas is less than ~0.33 M_J and that the gas-to-dust ratio is no more than ~4:1 in the outer disk. The combination of a high fractional IR excess luminosity, a relatively old age, an absence of accretion signatures, and an absence of detectable circumstellar molecular gas suggests that the HD 100453 system is in an unusual state of evolution between a gas-rich protoplanetary disk and a gas-poor debris disk., Comment: 24 pages, 10 figures, Accepted in ApJ 2/27/09

We use \suzaku observations to measure the spatial variation of the Fe K$\alpha$ line with radius in the \tycho supernova remnant. The Fe line widths show a significant decrease from a FWHM value of 210 eV at the center to 130 eV at the rim. Over the same radial range the line center energy remains nearly constant. These observations are consistent with a scenario in which the shell of Fe-emitting ejecta in \tycho is expanding at speeds of 2800--3350 km s$^{-1}$. The minimum line width we measure is still a factor of two larger than expected from a single component plasma emission model. If thermal Doppler broadening is the dominant additional source of broadening, we infer an ion temperature of $(1--3) \times 10^{10}$ K., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures, To appear in ApJ Letters

The NeXT (New exploration X-ray Telescope), the new Japanese X-ray Astronomy Satellite following Suzaku, is an international X-ray mission which is currently planed for launch in 2013. NeXT is a combination of wide band X-ray spectroscopy (3 - 80 keV) provided by multi-layer coating, focusing hard X-ray mirrors and hard X-ray imaging detectors, and high energy-resolution soft X-ray spectroscopy (0.3 - 10 keV) provided by thin-foil X-ray optics and a micro-calorimeter array. The mission will also carry an X-ray CCD camera as a focal plane detector for a soft X-ray telescope and a non-focusing soft gamma-ray detector. With these instruments, NeXT covers very wide energy range from 0.3 keV to 600 keV. The micro-calorimeter system will be developed by international collaboration lead by ISAS/JAXA and NASA. Recent radio observations of the small Galactic supernova remnant G1.9+0.3 made at 4.86 GHz with the VLA are presented, and compared with earlier observations at 1.49 GHz which have a comparable resolution (10 x 4 arcsec^2). These show that the radio emission from this remnant has expanded significantly, by about 15 per cent over 23 years, with a current outer diameter of approximately 92 arcsec. This expansion confirms that G1.9+0.3 is the youngest Galactic remnant yet identified, only about 150 years old at most. Recent, lower resolution, 1.43-GHz observations are also discussed, and the integrated flux densities from these and the 4.86-GHz observations are compared with earlier results. Our 50 ks Chandra observation of the small radio supernova remnant (SNR) G1.9+0.3 shows a complete shell structure with strong bilateral symmetry, about $100''$ in diameter. The radio morphology is also shell-like, but only about $84''$ in diameter, based on observations made in 1985. We attribute the size difference to expansion between 1985 and our Chandra observations of 2007. Expansion is confirmed in comparing radio images from 1985 and 2008. We deduce that G1.9+0.3 is of order 100 years old -- the youngest supernova remnant in the Galaxy. Based on a very high absorbing column density of $5.5 \times 10^{22}$ cm$^{-2}$, we place G1.9+0.3 near the Galactic Center, at a distance of about 8.5 kpc, where the mean remnant radius would be about 2 pc, and the required expansion speed about $14,000$ km s$^{-1}$. The X-ray spectrum is featureless and well-described by the exponentially cut off synchrotron model {\tt srcut}. With the radio flux at 1 GHz fixed at 0.9 Jy, we find a spectral index of 0.65 and a rolloff frequency of $1.4 \times 10^{18}$ Hz. The implied characteristic rolloff electron energy of about $94 (B/10 \mu{\rm G})^{-1/2}$ TeV is the highest ever reported for a shell supernova remnant. It can easily be reached by standard diffusive shock acceleration, given the very high shock velocities; it can be well described by either age-limited or synchrotron-loss-limited acceleration. The peculiar Type Ib supernova (SN) 2006jc has been observed with the UV/Optical Telescope (UVOT) and X-Ray Telescope (XRT) on board the Swift observatory over a period of 19 to 183 days after the explosion. Signatures of interaction of the outgoing SN shock with dense circumstellar material (CSM) are detected, such as strong X-ray emission (L_{0.2-10} > E39 erg/s) and the presence of MgII 2800A line emission visible in the UV spectra. In combination with a Chandra observation obtained on day 40 after the explosion, the X-ray light curve is constructed, which shows a unique rise of the X-ray emission by a factor of ~5 over a period of ~4 months, followed by a rapid decline. We interpret the unique X-ray and UV properties as a result of the SN shock interacting with a shell of material that was deposited by an outburst of the SN progenitor two years prior to the explosion. Our results are consistent with the explosion of a Wolf-Rayet star that underwent an episodic mass ejection qualitatively similar to those of luminous blue variable stars prior to its explosion. This led to the formation of a dense (>E7 cm**-3) shell at a distance of ~E16 cm from the site of the explosion, which expands with the WR wind at a velocity of (1300+/-300) km/s., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, submitted to ApJL (v2)

We present results on the X-ray and optical/UV emission from the type IIP SN 2006bp and the interaction of the SN shock with its environment, obtained with the X-Ray Telescope (XRT) and UV/Optical Telescope (UVOT) on-board the Swift observatory. SN 2006bp is detected in X-rays at a 4.5 sigma level of significance in the merged XRT data from days 1 to 12 after the explosion. If the X-ray luminosity of (1.8+/-0.4)E39 ergs/s is caused by interaction of the SN shock with circumstellar material (CSM), deposited by a stellar wind from the progenitor's companion star, a mass-loss rate of ~E-05 M_sun/yr is inferred. The mass-loss rate is consistent with the non-detection in the radio with the VLA on days 2, 9, and 11 after the explosion and characteristic of a red supergiant progenitor with a mass around 12-15 M_sun prior to the explosion. In combination with a follow-up XMM-Newton observation obtained on day 21 after the explosion, an X-ray rate of decline with index 1.2+/-0.6 is inferred. Since no other SN has been detected in X-rays prior to the optical peak and since type IIP SNe have an extended 'plateau' phase in the optical, we discuss the scenario that the X-rays might be due to inverse Compton scattering of photospheric optical photons off relativistic electrons produced in circumstellar shocks. However, due to the high required value of the Lorentz factor (~10-100) we conclude that Inverse Compton scattering is an unlikely explanation for the observed X-ray emission. The fast evolution of the optical/ultraviolet spectral energy distribution and the spectral changes observed with Swift reveal the onset of metal line-blanketing and cooling of the expanding photosphere during the first few weeks after the outburst., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

In the framework of the study of supernova remnants and their complex interaction with the interstellar medium and the circumstellar material, we focus on the galactic supernova remnant W49B. Its morphology exhibits an X-ray bright elongated nebula, terminated on its eastern end by a sharp perpendicular structure aligned with the radio shell. The X-ray spectrum of W49B is characterized by strong K emission lines from Si, S, Ar, Ca, and Fe. There is a variation of the temperature in the remnant with the highest temperature found in the eastern side and the lowest one in the western side. The analysis of the recent observations of W49B indicates that the remnant may be the result of an asymmetric bipolar explosion where the ejecta are collimated along a jet-like structure and the eastern jet is hotter and more Fe-rich than the western one. Another possible scenario associates the X-ray emission with a spherical explosion where parts of the ejecta are interacting with a dense belt of ambient material. To overcome this ambiguity we present new results of the analysis of an XMM-Newton observation and we perform estimates of the mass and energy of the remnant. We conclude that the scenario of an anisotropic jet-like explosion explains quite naturally our observation results, but the association of W49B with a hypernova and a gamma-ray burst, although still possible, is not directly supported by any evidence., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in Advances in Space Research

We identify the radio-emitting shell-type supernova remnant G15.9+0.2 as a relatively young remnant containing an X-ray point source that may be its associated neutron star. The integrated spectrum of the remnant shell obtained from our 30 ks exploratory Chandra observation shows very strong lines that require elevated element abundances from ejecta, in particular of sulfur. A plane-shock model fit gives a temperature $kT = 0.9 (0.8, 1.0)$ keV, an ionization timescale $n_et = 6 (4, 9) \times 10^{10}$ cm$^{-3}$ s, and a sulfur abundance of 2.1 (1.7, 2.7) times solar (90% confidence limits). Two-component models with one solar and one enriched component are also plausible, but are not well constrained by the data. Various estimates give a remnant age of order $10^3$ yr, which would make G15.9+0.2 among the dozen or so youngest remnants in the Galaxy. The sparse point source spectrum is consistent with either a steep $\Gamma \sim$ 4 power law or a $kT \sim$ 0.4 keV blackbody. The spectrum is absorbed by a H column density $N_H \sim 4 \times 10^{22}$ cm$^{-2}$ similar to that required for the remnant shell. The implied 2--9.5 keV source luminosity is about $10^{33}$ ergs s$^{-1}$ for an assumed distance of 8.5 kpc consistent with the high absorption column. Two ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) in the nearby Sb galaxy NGC 1313, named X-1 and X-2, were observed with Suzaku on 2005 September 15. During the observation for a net exposure of 28~ks (but over a gross time span of 90~ks), both objects varied in intensity by about 50~%. The 0.4--10 keV X-ray luminosity of X-1 and X-2 was measured as $2.5 \times 10^{40}~{\rm erg~s^{-1}}$ and $5.8 \times 10^{39}~{\rm erg~s^{-1}}$, respectively, with the former the highest ever reported for this ULX. The spectrum of X-1 can be explained by a sum of a strong and variable power-law component with a high energy cutoff, and a stable multicolor blackbody with an innermost disk temperature of $\sim 0.2$ keV. These results suggest that X-1 was in a ``very high'' state, where the disk emission is strongly Comptonized. The absorber within NGC 1313 toward X-1 is suggested to have a subsolar oxygen abundance. The spectrum of X-2 is best represented, in its fainter phase, by a multicolor blackbody model with the innermost disk temperature of 1.2--1.3 keV, and becomes flatter as the source becomes brighter. Hence X-2 is interpreted to be in a slim-disk state. These results suggest that the two ULXs have black hole masses of a few tens to a few hundreds solar masses., Comment: accepted for publication in PASJ

We present a study of the early (days to weeks) X-ray and UV properties of eight Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) which have been extensively observed with the X-Ray Telescope (XRT) and UV/Optical Telescope (UVOT) onboard Swift, ranging from 5-132 days after the outburst. SN 2005ke is tentatively detected (at a 3-3.6 sigma level of significance) in X-rays based on deep monitoring with the XRT ranging from 8 to 120 days after the outburst. The inferred X-ray luminosity [(2+/-1) x 10^{38} ergs/s; 0.3-2 keV band] is likely caused by interaction of the SN shock with circumstellar material (CSM), deposited by a stellar wind from the progenitor's companion star with a mass-loss rate of ~ 3 x 10^{-6} M_sun/yr (v_w/10 km/s). Evidence of CSM interaction in X-rays is independently confirmed by an excess of UV emission as observed with the UVOT onboard Swift, starting around 35 days after the explosion. The non-detection of SN 2005ke with Chandra 105 days after the outburst implies a rate of decline steeper than L_x \propto t^{-0.75}, consistent with the decline expected from the interaction of the SN shock with a spherically symmetric CSM (t^{-1}). None of the other seven SNe Ia is detected in X-rays or shows a UV excess, which allows us to put tight constraints on the mass-loss rates of the progenitor systems., Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures, accpeted for publication in ApJL

SN1988Z is the most luminous X-ray-emitting supernova, initially detected in 1995 using the ROSAT HRI with a luminosity of ~8x10^40 erg s^-1 (Fabian & Terlevich 1996). Its high luminosity was ascribed to expansion of the blast wave into an especially dense circumstellar medium. In this paper, we describe a recent observation of SN1988Z using the ACIS detector on Chandra. We readily detect SN1988Z, obtaining ~30 net counts which corresponds to a 0.2-2 keV luminosity of ~3.2x10^39 erg s^-1. The calculated quantiles for the extracted counts allow a broad range of temperatures, but require a temperature hotter than 5 keV if there is no intrinsic absorption. The long term light curve (1995-2005) declines as t^-2.6+/-0.6. This is one of the steepest X-ray light curves. The X-ray luminosity indicates that the emitting region has a high density (>10^5 cm^-3) and that the density profile is not consistent with a constant mass loss stellar wind during the ~5000 years before the explosion. If the circumstellar medium is due to progenitor mass loss, then the mass loss rate is extremely high (~10^-3 M_sol yr^-1(v_w / 10 km s^-1)). In the framework of the study of supernova remnants and their complex interaction with the interstellar medium, we report on an XMM-Newton EPIC observation of the Galactic supernova remnant W49B. We investigate the spatial distribution of the chemical and physical properties of the plasma, so as to get important constraints on the physical scenario, on the dynamics of the supernova explosion, and on the interaction of the supernova remnant with the ambient interstellar clouds. We present line images, equivalent width maps, and a spatially resolved spectral analysis of a set of homogeneous regions. The X-ray spectrum of W49B is characterized by strong K emission lines from Si, S, Ar, Ca and Fe. In all the regions studied, the X-ray spectrum is dominated by the emission from the ejecta and there is no indication of radial stratification of the elements. A high overabundance of Ni (Ni/Ni_sun=10^{+2}_{-1}) is required in the bright central region and the previous detection of Cr and Mn line emission is confirmed. Spectra are well described by two thermal components in collisional ionization equilibrium. We observe spatial variations in the temperature, with the highest temperature found in the east and the lowest in the west. Our results support a scenario in which the X-ray emission comes from ejecta interacting with a dense belt of ambient material, but another possibility is that the remnant is the result of an asymmetric bipolar explosion with the eastern jet being hotter and more Fe-rich than the western jet. The eastern jet is confined by interaction with ambient molecular clouds. Comparison of the observed abundances with yields for hypernova and supernova nucleosynthesis does not directly support the association of W49B with a gamma-ray burst, although it remains possible., Comment: To be published in A&A. The amount and nature of dark energy (DE) can be tightly constrained by measuring the spatial correlation features and evolution of a sample of ~ 100,000 galaxy clusters over the redshift range 0

This paper presents archival ROSAT PSPC observations of the G65.2+5.7 supernova remnant (also known as G65.3+5.7). Little material obscures this remnant and so it was well observed, even at the softest end of ROSAT's bandpass (~0.11 to 0.28 keV). These soft X-ray images reveal the remnant's centrally-filled morphology which, in combination with existing radio frequency observations, places G65.2+5.7 in the thermal composite (mixed morphology) class of supernova remnants. Not only might G65.2+5.7 be the oldest known thermal composite supernova remnant, but owing to its optically revealed cool, dense shell, this remnant supports the proposal that thermal composite supernova remnants lack X-ray bright shells because they have evolved beyond the adiabatic phase. These observations also reveal a slightly extended point source centered on RA = 19h 36m 46s, dec = 30deg 40' 07'' and extending 6.5 arcmin in radius in the band 67 map. (Abridged) We present a Chandra observation of the supernova remnant (SNR) 3C 397 (G41.1-0.3) obtained with ACIS-S. Previous studies of this SNR have shown that it harbors a central X-ray `hot spot' suggestive of a compact object associated with 3C 397. With the Chandra data, we can rule out the nature of the hot spot as a pulsar or a pulsar wind nebula, and put an upper limit on the flux of a hidden compact object of F (0.5--10 keV)~6E-13 erg/cm2/s. We found two point sources in the Chandra field. We argue that none of them is associated with 3C 397; and that the hard source, CXO J190741.2+070650, is a newly discovered AGN. The Chandra image reveals arcseconds-scale clumps and knots which are strongly correlated with the radio VLA image, except for the X-ray hot spot. Our Chandra spatially resolved spectroscopic study shows that one-component models are inadequate, and that at least two non-equilibrium ionization thermal components are needed to fit the spectra of each selected region. The derived average spectral parameters are consistent with the previous global ASCA fits performed by Safi-Harb et al. (2000). However, the hard component requires a high abundance of Fe indicating the presence of hot Fe ejecta. When comparing the eastern with the western lobe, we find that the column density, the brightness, and the ionization timescales are generally higher for the western side. This result, combined with our study of the 3C397 environs at millimeter wavelengths, indicate a denser medium to the west of the SNR. Our multi-wavelength imaging and spectral study favors the scenario where 3C 397 is a ~5,300-year old SNR expanding in a medium with a marked density gradient, and which is likely to be encountering a molecular cloud on the western side. As with other mixed morphology remnants, W44's projected center is bright in thermal X-rays. It has an obvious radio shell, but no discernable X-ray shell. X-ray bright knots dot W44's image. The Chandra data show that the remnant's hot, bright projected center is metal-rich and that the bright knots are regions of comparatively elevated elemental abundances. The neon abundance is elevated, suggesting that the center is rich in ejecta. Furthermore, some of the emitting iron atoms appear to be underionized with respect to the other ions, providing the first X-ray evidence for dust destruction in a supernova remnant. We use the Chandra data to test the following explanations for W44's X-ray bright center: 1.) entropy mixing from thermal conduction or bulk mixing, 2.) cloud evaporation, and 3.) a metallicity gradient, possibly due to dust destruction and ejecta enrichment. In these tests, we assume that the remnant has evolved beyond the adiabatic evolutionary stage, which explains the X-ray dimness of the shell. The entropy mixed model spectrum was found to be a good match to the Chandra spectrum. The bright knots have similar levels of ionization as the surrounding regions, challenging the evaporating clouds model. While both of these models are known to predict centrally bright X-ray morphologies, their predictions fall short of the observed brightness gradient. The resulting brightness gap can be largely filled in by emission from the extra metals in and near the remnant's projected center. We report the first detection of X-ray emission associated with the Homunculus Nebula which surrounds the supermassive star Eta Carinae. The emission is characterized by a temperature in excess of 100 MK, and is consistent with scattering of the time-delayed X-ray flux associated with the star. The nebular emission is bright in the northwestern lobe and near the central regions of the Homunculus, and fainter in the southeastern lobe. We also report the detection of an unusually broad Fe K fluorescent line, which may indicate fluorescent scattering off the wind of a companion star or some other high velocity outflow. The X-ray Homunculus is the nearest member of the small class of Galactic X-ray reflection nebulae, and the only one in which both the emitting and reflecting sources are distinguishable., Comment: 17 pages, 5 figures, accepted by ApJ

We present high-resolution X-ray proper motion measurements of Cassiopeia A using Chandra observations from 2000 and 2002. We separate the emission into four spectrally distinct classes: Si-dominated, Fe-dominated, low-energy-enhanced, and continuum-dominated. These classes also represent distinct spatial and kinematic components. The Si- and Fe-dominated classes are ejecta and have a mean expansion rate of 0.2%/yr. This is the same as for the forward shock filaments but less than the 0.3%/yr characteristic of optical ejecta. The low-energy-enhanced spectral class possibly illuminates a clumpy circumstellar component and has a mean expansion rate of 0.05%/yr. The continuum-dominated emission likely represents the forward shock and consists of diffuse circumstellar material which is seen as a circular ring around the periphery of the remnant as well as projected across the center., Comment: 15 pages, 3 figures, accepted to ApJ

We present the first results coming from the observation of Kepler's supernova remnant obtained with the EPIC instruments on board the XMM-Newton satellite. We focus on the images and radial profiles of the emission lines (Si K, Fe L, Fe K) and of the high energy continuum. Chiefly, the Fe L and Si K emission-line images are generally consistent with each other and the radial profiles show that the Si K emission extends to a larger radius than the Fe L emission (distinctly in the southern part of the remnant). Therefore, in contrast to Cas A, no inversion of the Si- and Fe-rich ejecta layers is observed in Kepler. Moreover, the Fe K emission peaks at a smaller radius than the Fe L emission, which implies that the temperature increases inwards in the ejecta. The 4-6 keV high energy continuum map shows the same distribution as the asymmetric emission-line images except in the southeast where there is a strong additional emission. A two color image of the 4-6 keV and 8-10 keV high energy continuum illustrates that the hardness variations of the continuum are weak all along the remnant except in a few knots. The asymmetry in the Fe K emission-line is not associated with any asymmetry in the Fe K equivalent width map. The Si K maps lead to the same conclusions. Hence, abundance variations do not cause the north-south brightness asymmetry. The strong emission in the north may be due to overdensities in the circumstellar medium. In the southeastern region of the remnant, the lines have a very low equivalent width and the X-ray emission is largely nonthermal., Comment: 15 pages, 15 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

This paper describes the {\it Chandra} observation of the diffuse emission in the face-on spiral NGC 6946. Overlaid on optical and H${\alpha}$ images, the diffuse emission follows the spiral structure of the galaxy. An overlay on a 6 cm polarized radio intensity map confirms the phase offset of the polarized emission. We then extract and fit the spectrum of the unresolved emission with several spectral models. All model fits show a consistent continuum thermal temperature with a mean value of 0.25$\pm$0.03 keV. Additional degrees of freedom are required to obtain a good fit and any of several models satisfy that need; one model uses a second continuum component with a temperature of 0.70$\pm$0.10 keV. An abundance measure of 3$^{+1.95}_{-1.90}$ for Si differs from the solar value at the 90% confidence level; the net diffuse spectrum shows the line lies above the instrumental Si feature. For Fe, the abundance measure of 0.67$\pm$0.13 is significant at 99%. Multiple gaussians also provide a good fit. Two of the fitted gaussians capture the O VII and O VIII emission; the fitted emission is consistent with an {\it XMM-Newton} RGS spectrum of diffuse gas in M81. The ratio of the two lines is $<$0.6-0.7 and suggests the possibility of non-equilibrium ionization conditions exist in the ISM of NGC 6946. We present the results of a study of discrete X-ray sources in NGC 6946 using a deep Chandra ACIS observation. Based on the slope of the log N-log S distribution and the general correlation of sources with the spiral arms, we infer that the overall discrete source sample in NGC 6946 is dominated by high mass X-ray binaries, in contrast to the source distributions in M31 and the Milky Way. This is consistent with the higher star formation rate in NGC 6946 than in those galaxies. We find that the strong X-ray sources in the region of the galactic center do not correlate in detail with images of the region in the near-IR, although one of them may be coincident with the galactic center. The non-central ultra-luminous X-ray source in NGC 6946, previously identified with a supernova remnant, has an X-ray spectrum and luminosity that is inconsistent with either a traditional pulsar wind nebula or a blast wave remnant., Comment: accepted ApJ

We present the result of a Chandra ACIS observation of the pulsar PSR B1853+01 and its associated pulsar wind nebula (PWN), embedded within the supernova remnant W44. A hard band ACIS map cleanly distinguishes the PWN from the thermal emission of W44. The nebula is extended in the north-south direction, with an extent about half that of the radio emission. Morphological differences between the X-ray and radio images are apparent. Spectral fitting reveals a clear difference in spectral index between the hard emission from PSR B1853+01 (Gamma ~ 1.4) and the extended nebula (Gamma ~ 2.2). The more accurate values for the X-ray flux and spectral index are used refine estimates for PWN parameters, including magnetic field strength, the average Lorentz factor, gamma, of the particles in the wind, the magnetization parameter, sigma, and the ratio k of electrons to other particles., Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures, accepted by ApJ

G21.5-0.9 is a plerionic supernova remnant (SNR) whose properties hint at the presence of a pulsar -- yet no pulsations have been found at any wavelength. Early observations with Chandra led to the discovery of an extended component, making the SNR at least twice as big as originally thought. Our analysis indicates that this low-surface brightness extended component is non-thermal. We perform a spatially resolved spectroscopy using a 72 ksec exposure with ACIS-S, and find no evidence of line emission. The 5-arcminute diameter remnant is well fitted with a power law with a photon index steepening from 1.5 (central core) to 2.7 (extended component) and a column density N_H=2.2 10^22 cm^-2. Using a 76 ksec exposure with the HRC, we derive an upper limit of 16% on the pulsed fraction from a putative pulsar. We also infer the parameters of the `hidden pulsar' in G21.5-0.9 in comparison with the Crab and 3C 58 pulsars. This remnant remains unique and intriguing since it is, to date, the only candidate whose size is bigger in X-rays than in the radio., Comment: 4 pages including 2 color figures and a table, newpasp.sty. We present the results of a joint spectral analysis of RXTE PCA, ASCA SIS, and ROSAT PSPC data of the supernova remnant SN 1006. This work represents the first attempt to model both the thermal and nonthermal X-ray emission over the entire X-ray energy band from 0.12 to 17 keV. The thermal flux is described by a nonequilibrium ionization model with an electron temperature kT = 0.6 keV, an ionization timescale n0t = 9 x 10^9 s / cm^3, and a relative elemental abundance of silicon that is 10-18 times larger than the solar abundance. The nonthermal X-ray spectrum is described by a broken power law model with low- and high-energy photon indices Gamma_1 = 2.1 and Gamma_2 = 3.0, respectively. Since the nonthermal X-ray spectrum steepens with increasing energy, the results of the present analysis corroborate previous claims that the nonthermal X-ray emission is produced by synchrotron radiation. We argue that the magnetic field strength is significantly larger than previous estimates of about 1 x 10^-5 G and arbitrarily use a value of 4 x 10^-5 G to estimate the parameters of the cosmic-ray electron, proton, and helium spectra of the remnant. The results for the ratio of the number densities of protons and electrons (R = 160 at 1 GeV), the total energy in cosmic rays (E_cr = 1 x 10^50 ergs), and the spectral index of the electrons at 1 GeV (Gamma_e = 2.14 +/- 0.12) are consistent with the hypothesis that Galactic cosmic rays are accelerated predominantly in the shocks of supernova remnants. Yet, the remnant may or may not accelerate nuclei to energies as high as the energy of the "knee," depending on the reason why the maximum energy of the electrons is only 10 TeV., Comment: 41 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ in September

We present the analysis of archival X-ray observations of the supernova remnant (SNR) G21.5-0.9. Based on its morphology and spectral properties, G21.5-0.9 has been classified as a Crab-like SNR. In their early analysis of the CHANDRA calibration data, Slane et al. (2000) discovered a low-surface-brightness, extended emission. They interpreted this component as the blast wave formed in the supernova (SN) explosion. In this paper, we present the CHANDRA analysis using a total exposure of ~150 ksec. We also include ROSAT and ASCA observations. Our analysis indicates that the extended emission is non-thermal -- a result in agreement with XMM observations. The entire remnant of radius ~ 2'.5 is best fitted with a power law model with a photon index steepening away from the center. The total unabsorbed flux in the 0.5-10 keV is 1.1E-10 erg/cm2/s with an 85% contribution from the 40" radius inner core. Timing analysis of the High-Resolution Camera (HRC) data failed to detect any pulsations. We put a 16% upper limit on the pulsed fraction. We derive the physical parameters of the putative pulsar and compare them with those of other plerions (such as the Crab and 3C 58). G21.5-0.9 remains the only plerion whose size in X-rays is bigger than in the radio. Eta Car may be the most massive and luminous star in the Galaxy and is suspected to be a massive, colliding wind binary system. The CHANDRA X-ray observatory has obtained a calibrated, high-resolution X-ray spectrum of the star uncontaminated by the nearby extended soft X-ray emisssion. Our 89 ksec CHANDRA observation with the High Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer (HETGS) shows that the hot gas near the star is non-isothermal. The temperature distribution may represent the emission on either side of the colliding wind bow shock, effectively ``resolving'' the shock. If so, the pre-shock wind velocities are ~ 700 and ~ 1800 km/s in our analysis, and these velocities may be interpreted as the terminal velocities of the winds from Eta Car and from the hidden companion star. The forbidden-to-intercombination (f/i) line ratios for the He-like ions of S, Si and Fe are large, indicating that the line forming region lies far from the stellar photosphere. The iron fluorescent line at 1.93 Angstrom, first detected by ASCA, is clearly resolved from the thermal iron line in the CHANDRA grating spectrum. The Fe fluorescent line is weaker in our CHANDRA observation than in any of the ASCA spectra. The CHANDRA observation also provides an uninterrupted high-time resolution lightcurve of the stellar X-ray emission from Eta Car and suggests that there was no significant, coherent variability during the CHANDRA observation. The Eta Car CHANDRA grating spectrum is unlike recently published X-ray grating spectra of single massive stars in significant ways and is generally consistent with colliding wind emission in a massive binary., Comment: revised after comments from referee and includes a new variability analysis, taking into account the effects of CCD pileup

We report on the X-ray observation of the radio selected supernova SN1979C carried out with ASCA in 1997 December and serendipitously available from a Chandra Guaranteed Time Observation in 1999 November. The supernova, of type SN II-Linear (SN IIL), was first observed in the optical and occurred in the weakly barred, almost face on spiral galaxy NGC 4321 (M100). The galaxy, a member of the Virgo S cluster, is at a distance of 17.1 Mpc, and contains at least three other supernovae discovered in this century. The useful exposure time was ~25 ks for the Solid-State Imaging Spectrometer (SIS), ~28 ks for the Gas Scintillation Imaging Spectrometer (GIS), and ~2.5 ks for Chandra's Advanced CCD Imaging Spectrometer (ACIS). No point source was detected at the radio position of SN1979C in a 3' diameter half power response circle in the ASCA data. The background and galaxy subtracted SN signal had a 3sigma upper limit to the flux of 6.3x10^-14 ergs/s/cm^-2 in the full ASCA SIS band (0.4-10.0 keV) and a 3sigma upper limit of <3-4x10^-14 erg/s/cm^2 in the 2-10 keV band. In the Chandra data, a source at the position of SN1979C is marginally detected at energies below 2 keV at a flux consistent with the ROSAT HRI detection in 1995. At energies above 2 keV, no source is detected with an upper limit of ~3x10^-14 erg/s/cm^-2. These measurements give the first ever x-ray flux limit of a Type IIL SN above 2 keV which is an important diagnostic of the outgoing shock wave ploughing through the circumstellar medium., Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures, accepted AJ
