In this paper we study the behavior of the Casimir energy of a "multi-cavity" across the transition from the metallic to the superconducting phase of the constituting plates. Our analysis is carried out in the framework of the ARCHIMEDES experiment, aiming at measuring the interaction of the electromagnetic vacuum energy with a gravitational field. For this purpose it is foreseen to modulate the Casimir energy of a layered structure composing a multi-cavity coupled system by inducing a transition from the metallic to the superconducting phase. This implies a thorough study of the behavior of the cavity, where normal metallic layers are alternated with superconducting layers, across the transition. Our study finds that, because of the coupling between the cavities, mainly mediated by the transverse magnetic modes of the radiation field, the variation of energy across the transition can be very large., Comment: 17 pages, 3 figures. Archimedes is an INFN-funded pathfinder experiment aimed at verifying the feasibility of measuring the interaction of vacuum fluctuations with gravity. The final experiment will measure the force exerted by the gravitational field on a Casimir cavity whose vacuum energy is modulated with a superconductive transition, by using a balance as a small force detector. We present an exploratory numerical study on the lattice of the color structure of the wave functionals of the SU(3) Yang-Mills theory in the presence of a $q\bar q$ static pair. In a spatial box with periodic boundary conditions we discuss the fact that all states contributing to the Feynman propagation kernel are global color singlets. We confirm this numerically by computing the correlations of gauge-fixed Polyakov lines with color-twisted boundary conditions in the time direction. The values of the lowest energies in the color singlet and octet external source sectors agree within statistical errors, confirming that both channels contribute to the lowest (global singlet) state of the Feynman kernel. We then study the case of homogeneous boundary conditions in the time direction for which the gauge-fixing is not needed. In this case the lowest energies extracted in the singlet external source sector agree with those determined with periodic boundary conditions, while in the octet sector the correlator is compatible with being null within our statistical errors. Therefore consistently only the singlet external source contribution has a non-vanishing overlap with the null-field wave functional., Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures

QCD with two colors undergoes a transition to a superfluid phase with diquark condensate when the quark chemical potential equals half the pion mass. We investigate the gluonic aspects of the transition by inspecting the behavior of the glueball correlators evaluated via a multi-step smearing procedure for several values of chemical potential ranging between zero and the saturation threshold. The results are based on an analysis of 0++ glueball correlators, on a sample of 40000 independent configurations on each parameter set. The amplitudes of the correlators peak for \mu = m_\pi/2,indicating that the superfluid phase transition affects the gluonic sector as well. The mass of the fundamental state decreases in the superfluid phase, and the amplitude of the propagators drops, suggesting a reduction of the gluon condensate, in agreement with model calculations. We present the first numerical implementation of a non-perturbative renormalization method for lattice operators, based on the study of correlation functions in coordinate space at short Euclidean distance. The method is applied to compute the renormalization constants of bilinear quark operators for the non-perturbative O(a)-improved Wilson action in the quenched approximation. The matching with perturbative schemes, such as MS-bar, is computed at the next-to-leading order in continuum perturbation theory. We present an exploratory study of a gauge-invariant non-perturbative renormalization technique. The renormalization conditions are imposed on correlation functions of composite operators in coordinate space on the lattice. Numerical results for bilinears obtained with overlap and O(a)-improved Wilson fermions are presented. We present preliminary results from a high statistics study of 2-color QCD at low temperature and non-zero baryon density. The simulations are carried out on a 6^3*12 lattice and use a standard hybrid molecular dynamics algorithm for staggered fermions for two values of quark mass. The gauge dependence of some fermion bilinear RI/MOM renormalization constants is studied by comparing data which have been gauge-fixed in two different realizations of the Landau gauge and in a generic covariant gauge. The very good agreement between the various sets of results and the theory indicates that the numerical uncertainty induced by the lattice gauge-fixing procedure is below the statistical errors of our data sample which is of the order of (1-1.5)%., Comment: 3 pages, 2 figures, Lattice2002(theoretical)

The RI/MOM non-perturbative renormalization scheme is studied on the lattice in SU(3) quenched QCD with Wilson fermions. We draw a possible scenario for the observation of massive long-lived charged particles at the LHC detector ATLAS. The required flexibility of the detector triggers and of the identification and reconstruction systems are discussed. As an example, we focus on the measurement of the mass and lifetime of long-lived charged sleptons predicted in the framework of supersymmetric models with gauge-mediated supersymmetry (SUSY) breaking. In this case, the next-to-lightest SUSY particle can be the light scalar partner of the tau lepton, possibly decaying slowly into a gravitino. A wide region of the SUSY parameters space was explored. We illustrate preliminary results on the gluon propagator computed in generic covariant lattice gauges in the quenched approximation with the Wilson action. We have applied a recently proposed procedure to fix a generic covariant gauge on the lattice. We report a study on the measurement of the SUSY breaking scale sqrt(F) in the framework of gauge-mediated supersymmetry breaking (GMSB) models at the LHC. The work is focused on the GMSB scenario where a stau is the next-to-lightest SUSY particle (NLSP) and decays into a gravitino with lifetime c*tau_NLSP in the range 0.5 m to 1 km. We study the identification of long-lived sleptons using the momentum and time of flight measurements in the muon chambers of the ATLAS experiment. A realistic evaluation of the statistical and systematic uncertainties on the measurement of the slepton mass and lifetime is performed, based on a detailed simulation of the detector response. Accessible range and precision on sqrt(F) achievable with a counting method are assessed. The status of two on-going studies concerning important aspects of the phenomenology of gauge-mediated supersymmetry breaking (GMSB) models at TeV colliders is reported. The first study deals with the characteristics of the light Higgs boson spectrum allowed by the (minimal and non-minimal) GMSB framework. Today's most accurate GMSB model generation and two-loop Feynman-diagrammatic calculation of m_h have been combined. The Higgs masses are shown in dependence of various model parameters at the messenger and electroweak scales. In the minimal model, an upper limit on m_h of about 124 GeV is found for m_t = 175 GeV. The second study is focused on the measurement of the fundamental SUSY breaking scale sqrt(F) at the LHC in the GMSB scenario where a stau is the next-to-lightest SUSY particle (NLSP) and decays into a gravitino with c*tau_NLSP in the range 0.5 m to 1 km. This implies the measurement of mass and lifetime of long lived sleptons. The identification is performed by determining the time of flight in the ATLAS muon chambers. The t->cH decay width has been computed in the standard model with a light Higgs boson. The corresponding branching fraction has been found to be in the range B(t->cH) ~ 10^{-13} - 10^{-14} for M_Z < m_H < 2 M_W. We propose a non-perturbative procedure to fix generic covariant gauges on the lattice. Varying the gauge parameter, this gauge fixing provides a concrete method to check numerically the gauge dependence of correlators measured on the lattice. The new algorithm turns out to converge with a good efficiency. We describe how to overcome some problems that usually prevent from obtaining an efficient algorithm to fix a generic covariant gauge on the lattice. This gauge is the lattice equivalent of the generic gauge usually adopted in perturbative calculations. We address the problem of defining the gluon field on the lattice in terms of the natural link variables. Different regularized definitions are shown, through non perturbative numerical computation, to converge towards the same continuum renormalized limit., Comment: Lattice98(algorithms)

We present a new calculation of the t->cH decay rate in the standard model. We find that the corresponding branching fraction is B(t->cH) \sim 10^{-13} - 10^{-14} for M_Z < m_H < 2 M_W, that is about 6 orders of magnitude less than previously evaluated, and usually quoted in the literature., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures, uses axodraw.sty. We argue that there is strong experimental evidence in the data of b- and c-decays that the pattern of power suppressed corrections predicted by the short distance expansion, the heavy quark effective theory and the assumption of local duality is not correct for the non-leptonic inclusive widths. The data indicate instead the presence of 1/m corrections that should be absent in the above theoretical framework. These corrections can be simply described by replacing the heavy quark mass by the mass of the decaying hadron in the m^5 factor in front of all the non-leptonic widths., Comment: 9 pages, 1 figure; Revised: one reference ([11]) has been changed

Using the recent relatively precise experimental results on the pion structure function, obtained from Drell--Yan processes, we quantitatively test an old model where the structure function of any hadron is determined by that of its constituent quarks. In this model the pion structure function can be predicted from the known nucleon structure function. We study the influence of Gribov copies in the Coulomb gauge on the smeared hadronic correlation functions that are involved in the determination of the B meson decay constant. We find that the residual gauge freedom associated to Gribov copies induces observable noise effects, though at the level of numerical accuracy of our simulation these effects are not relevant to the final determination of f_B.
