This paper is a corpus-based study focusing on implicit evaluation expressed in newspaper discourse, namely, the semantic mapping of emotion and opinion. The corpus, compiled of online “front page” newspaper articles from both selected tabloids (The Sun, The Express, The Mirror) and broadsheets (The Telegraph, The Guardian, The Independent) was used to answer three research questions: 1) Is evaluation markedly expressed in newspaper discourse? 2) What linguistic means are typical for construing evaluation in newspaper discourse? 3) Is there a difference between the tabloids and the broadsheets regarding the way in which/how evaluation is conveyed/employed? To answer these questions, a pilot keyword study on only six articles was carried out (one article from each of the aforementioned newspapers). The findings confirmed the importance of adjectives in expressing evaluation. Following this, a large study was conducted to detect local grammar adjectival lexicogrammatical patterns, introduced by Hunston (2000) and further amended by Bednarek (2007, 2009). These patterns, which are known for carrying the evaluative load, were analyzed in terms of frequency and function. It was observed that there is a difference in expressing evaluation between the tabloids and the broadsheets. However, more significant differences were found between the broadsheet newspapers themselves.

Novinový diskurz byl již mnohokrát analyzován. Ať už se jednalo o přístup kritický, stylistický, kognitivní, diachronický, sociolingvistický či přístup korpusní lingvistiky, tyto přístupy se nezaměřovaly na analýzu evaluace v textu. Proto se tento článek pokusí popsat a porovnat dva lexikogramatické vzorce, které byly poprvé identifikovány a popsány Hunstonovou a Sinclairem a upravený Bednarkovou. Na korpusu britských online bulvárních a seriózních novinových článků se ukázalo, že lexikogramatické vzorce ‘it v-link ADJ finite/non-finite clause’ a ‘v-link ADJ prep’ jsou nejčastěji používány k vyjádření evaluace. Tento článek porovnává nejen četnost výskytu těchto vzorců v daném korpusu, ale zaměřuje se také na rozdíly užití, které tyto vzorce vykazují v jednotlivých pod korpusech.

Salt-losing tubulopathies are well-recognised diseases predisposing to metabolic disturbances in affected patients. One of the most severe complications can be life-threatening arrhythmias causing sudden cardiac arrest. We present here the first case of a pediatric patient with Gitelman syndrome associated sudden cardiac arrest without precipitating event. A 10-year-old boy collapsed due to ventricular fibrillation in the Prague tram. Lay cardiopulmonary resuscitation was initiated and external defibrillation restored sinus rhythm within minutes. Initial laboratory examination revealed severe hypokalemia requiring large amounts of electrolyte supplementation. Genetic testing focused to tubulopathies was performed and the diagnosis of Gitelman syndrome was made following the identification of two pathogenic variants in SLC12A3 gene (c.2633 + 1G>A and c.2221G>A). Implantable cardioverter-defibrillator was implanted to prevent sudden cardiac death. The patient was in a good clinical condition with satisfactory electrolyte serum levels at the last follow-up. Causes of electrolyte abnormalities in children should be identified early to prevent the development of rare but potentially fatal complications.
