The veracity of stellar evolution models and theoretical internal structure constants may be subjected to stringent tests by using physical parameters obtained from spectroscopic and photometric observations of eclipsing binary systems that exhibit apsidal motion. Two eclipsing binary stars from the southern hemisphere with no prior published spectroscopic analyses were selected for this study: GV Nor and V881 Sco. Spectroscopic observations of these two eccentric binary systems were made at the South African Astronomical Observatory (SAAO) in 2018 and 2019, and their mid-resolution spectra were obtained. The radial velocities were measured using the cross-correlation method as well as by disentangling the spectra. The rotational broadening of the disentangled spectra of the components was also determined. The absolute parameters of these two systems were obtained by analyzing the SAAO-based spectroscopic data in conjunction with photometric data from Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite. Apsidal motion parameters for these two eccentric binary systems were calculated by analysing eclipse timing variations. Granada and Padova evolution models indicated ages of 340 ± 35 Myr for GV Nor and 760 ± 15 Myr for V881 Sco, in agreement with the observational results. The theoretical internal structure constants estimated from the Granada models were compatible with the observational values within the error limits. However, for both systems, it was found that their circularization and synchronization timescales were shorter than their respective evolutionary ages. Therefore, the fact that the components rotate faster than their synchronized values and still have rather large eccentric orbits (e ∼ 0.11) challenges present theories of circularization and spin–orbit synchronization.

The M31 recurrent nova M31N 1926-07c has had five recorded eruptions. Well-sampled light curves of the two most recent outbursts, in January of 2020 (M31N 2020-01b) and September 2022 (M31N 2022-09a), are presented showing that the photometric evolution of the two events were quite similar, with peak magnitudes of $R=17.2\pm0.1$ and $R=17.1\pm0.1$, and $t_2$ times of $9.7\pm0.9$ and $8.1\pm0.5$ days for the 2020 and 2022 eruptions, respectively. After considering the dates of the four most recent eruptions (where the cycle count is believed to be known), a mean recurrence interval of $\langle P_\mathrm{rec}\rangle=2.78\pm0.03$ years is found, establishing that M31N 1926-07c has one of the shortest recurrence times known., Comment: 5 pages; 1 figure; 1 table; Published in Research Notes of the AAS

We present the new results of our long-term observational project to detect the small variations in the orbital periods of low-mass and short-period eclipsing binaries. About 120 new precise mid-eclipse times were obtained for three relatively well-known dwarf eclipsing binaries: SDSS J143547.87+373338.5 (P = 0.126 d), NSVS 07826147 (0.162 d), and NSVS 14256825 (0.110 d). Observed-minus-calculated (O-C) diagrams of these systems were analyzed using all accurate timings, and, where possible, new parameters of the light-time effect were calculated. For the first time, we derive (or improve upon previous findings with regard to) the short orbital periods of 13 and 10 years of possible third bodies for SDSS J143547.87+373338.5 and NSVS 07826147, respectively. In these binaries, our data show that period variations can be modeled simply on the basis of a single circumbinary object. For the first two objects, we calculated the minimum mass of the third components to be 17 MJ, and 1.4 MJ respectively, which corresponds to the mass of a brown dwarf or a giant planet. For NSVS 14256825, the cyclical period changes caused by a single additional body cannot be confirmed by our recent eclipse time measurements. We report the discovery of a compact, coplanar, quadruply-lined, eclipsing quadruple star system from TESS data, TIC 454140642, also known as TYC 0074-01254-1. The target was first detected in Sector 5 with 30-min cadence in Full-Frame Images and then observed in Sector 32 with 2-min cadence. The light curve exhibits two sets of primary and secondary eclipses with periods of PA = 13.624 days (binary A) and PB = 10.393 days (binary B). Analysis of archival and follow-up data shows clear eclipse-timing variations and divergent radial velocities, indicating dynamical interactions between the two binaries and confirming that they form a gravitationally-bound quadruple system with a 2+2 hierarchy. The Aa+Ab binary, Ba+Bb binary, and A-B system are aligned with respect to each other within a fraction of a degree: the respective mutual orbital inclinations are 0.25 degrees (A vs B), 0.37 degrees (A vs A-B), and 0.47 degrees (B vs A-B). We report the discovery of a sextuply eclipsing sextuple star system from TESS data, TIC 168789840, also known as TYC 7037-89-1, the first known sextuple system consisting of three eclipsing binaries. The target was observed in Sectors 4 and 5 during Cycle 1, with lightcurves extracted from TESS Full Frame Image data. It was also previously observed by the WASP survey and ASAS-SN. The system consists of three gravitationally bound eclipsing binaries in a hierarchical structure of an inner quadruple system with an outer binary subsystem. Follow-up observations from several different observatories were conducted as a means of determining additional parameters. The system was resolved by speckle interferometry with a 0.″42 separation between the inner quadruple and outer binary, inferring an estimated outer period of ∼2 kyr. It was determined that the fainter of the two resolved components is an 8.217 day eclipsing binary, which orbits the inner quadruple that contains two eclipsing binaries with periods of 1.570 days and 1.306 days. Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) analysis of the stellar parameters has shown that the three binaries of TIC 168789840 are “triplets,” as each binary is quite similar to the others in terms of mass, radius, and T eff. As a consequence of its rare composition, structure, and orientation, this object can provide important new insight into the formation, dynamics, and evolution of multiple star systems. Future observations could reveal if the intermediate and outer orbital planes are all aligned with the planes of the three inner eclipsing binaries.

The available minima timings of 14 selected eclipsing binaries (V1297 Cas, HD 24105, KU Aur, GU CMa, GH Mon, AZ Vel, DI Lyn, DK Her, GQ Dra, V624 Her, V1134 Her, KIC 6187893, V1928 Aql, V2486 Cyg) were collected and analyzed. Using the automatic telescopes, surveys, and satellite data, we derived more than 2500 times of eclipses, accompanied with our own ground-based observations. These data were used to detect the period variations in these multiple systems. The eclipse timing variations were described using the third-body hypothesis and the light-time effect. Their respective periods were derived as 2.5, 16.2, 27, 20, 64, 5.6, 22, 115, 27, 42, 6.9, 11.2, 4.1, and 8.4 years for these systems, respectively. The predicted minimal mass of the third body was calculated for each of the systems, and we discuss here their prospective detectability. The light curves of HD 24105, GH Mon, DK Her, V1134 Her, KIC 6187893, V1928 Aql, and V2486 Cyg were analyzed using the PHOEBE program, resulting in physical parameters of the components. Significant fractions of the third light were detected during the light-curve analysis, supporting our hypothesis of the triple-star nature of all these systems. The majority of these systems (nine out of 14) were already known as visual doubles. We present new results of our long-term observational project to analyze the variations of the orbital period for early-type eccentric eclipsing binaries. Altogether 77 new mid-eclipse times were measured or derived for two eclipsing binaries, namely V539 Ara and V335 Ser. Based on current O − C diagrams, we found in both systems that times of minima besides the typical apsidal motion show additional cyclical changes likely caused by the third or fourth bodies orbiting the eclipsing pair. The improved periods of apsidal motion are 155 and 1080 years, respectively. For the first time we propose a third and fourth body orbiting V539 Ara, stellar companions in a hierarchical system with a minimal mass of 0.41 and 1.74 M ⊙ . In V355 Ser we found a possible third body with a mass of 0.18 M ⊙ orbiting this eclipsing pair. The third- and fourth-body orbital periods are relatively short: 29 and 57 yr in case of V539 Ara, and 25 yr for V335 Ser.

We present our results of a long-term monitoring of cataclysmic variable stars (CVs). About 40 new eclipses were measured for the three southern SU UMa-type eclipsing CVs: V2051 Oph, OY Car and Z Cha. Based on the current O − C diagrams we confirmed earlier findings that V2051 Oph and OY Car present cyclic changes of their orbital periods lasting 25 and 29 years, respectively. In case of Z Cha we propose the light-time effect caused probably by a presence of the third component orbiting the eclipsing CV with the period of 43.5 years. The minimal mass of this companion results about 15 MJup.

A growing group of stellar triple systems contains an eclipsing binary for which the depth of eclipses has been proven to change in time, a sign of evolving orbital inclination. The recent analysis of historical observations of HS Hya significantly extended the timespan over which the inclination changes are known for this system. Here we add a few more observations and reanalyze the whole data set with a single methodology. We also improve our own analytical approach to enable describing the secular evolution of the orbital architecture of hierarchical triple systems applicable to the HS Hya case. Analyzing the available photometric and spectroscopic data we obtain two main results. First, the dynamical evolution itself allows to constrain the masses of the stars in the inner binary to 1.31 ± 0.03 M ⊙ and 1.27 ± 0.03 M ⊙, and the mass of the unseen third component to 0.56 − 0.09 + 0.12 M ⊙ (all 95% confidence level results). This makes it an M- or K-type dwarf accompanying the binary. Second, the orbital planes of the inner binary and the third component are significantly noncoplanar, allowing two solutions for their mutual angle J. Either the motion of the third component is prograde, and J is most likely in the 50°–65° range, or the motion is retrograde, and J is most likely in the 120°–150° range. The precession period of both orbital planes about the total angular angular momentum is ∼700 yr (with about two centuries of uncertainty). This implies HS Hya will become eclipsing again around the year 2200.

We report the very first analysis of 27 eclipsing binary systems with high eccentricities that sometimes reach up to 0.8. The orbital periods for these systems range from 1.4 to 37 days, and the median of the sample is 10.3 days. Star CzeV3392 (= UCAC4 623 022784), for example, currently is the eclipsing system with the highest eccentricity (e = 0.22) of stars with a period shorter than 1.5 days. We analysed the light curves of all 27 systems and obtained the physical parameters of both components, such as relative radii, inclinations, or relative luminosities. The most important parameters appear to be the derived periods and eccentricities. They allow constructing the period-eccentricity diagram. This eccentricity distribution is used to study the tidal circularisation theories. The first 100 brightest eclipsing systems from the Small Magellanic Cloud were studied for their period changes. The photometric data from the surveys OGLE-II, OGLE-III, OGLE-IV and MACHO were combined with our new CCD observations obtained using the Danish 1.54-m telescope (La Silla, Chile). Besides the period changes the light curves were also analysed using the program PHOEBE, which provided the physical parameters of both eclipsing components. For 14 of these systems the additional bodies were found, having the orbital periods from 2 to 20 yr and the eccentricities were found to be up to 0.9. Amongst the sample of studied 100 brightest systems, we discussed the number of systems with particular period changes. We present an extensive study of 162 early-type binary systems located in the LMC galaxy that show apsidal motion and have never been studied before. For the ample systems, we performed light curve and apsidal motion modelling for the first time. These systems have a median orbital period of 2.2 days and typical periods of the apsidal motion were derived to be of the order of decades. We identified two record-breaking systems. The first, OGLE LMC-ECL-22613, shows the shortest known apsidal motion period among systems with main sequence components (6.6 years); it contains a third component with an orbital period of 23 years. The second, OGLE LMC-ECL-17226, is an eccentric system with the shortest known orbital period (0.9879 days) and with quite fast apsidal motion period (11 years). Among the studied systems, 36 new triple-star candidates were identified based on the additional period variations. This represents more than 20% of all studied systems, which is in agreement with the statistics of multiples in our Galaxy. However, the fraction should only be considered as a lower limit of these early-type stars in the LMC because of our method of detection, data coverage, and limited precision of individual times of eclipses., Comment: 24 pages, 18 figures, 5 tables, published in 2020A&A...640A..33Z

Aims: Our goal was to increase number of known doubly eclipsing systems such that the resulting dataset would allow to study them via statistical means, as well as prove that they constitute gravitationally bound 2+2 quadruple system. Methods: We analysed photometric data for eclipsing binaries provided by the OGLE survey in the LMC fields. We found a large number of new doubly eclipsing systems (our discoveries are 3x more numerous than previous studies). With a typical orbital period of days for the binaries, we sought eclipse time variations (ETVs) on the timescale of years. In the cases where we were able to detect the ETV period, the difference between the inner and outer periods in the quadruple system is large enough. This allows us to interpret ETVs primarily as the light-time effect, thus providing an interesting constraint on masses of the binaries. Results: In addition to significantly enlarging the database of known doubly eclipsing systems, we performed a thorough analysis of 72 cases. ETVs for 28 of them (39% of the studied cases) showed evidence of relative motion. We note OGLE BLG-ECL-145467 as the most interesting case; it is bright (I=12.6 mag), consists of two detached binaries with periods of about 3.3 d and 4.9 d (making it a candidate for a 3:2 resonant system), mutual period about 1538 d. Distribution of the orbital period ratio P_A/P_B of binaries in 2+2 quadruples shows statistically significant excess at 1 and 1.5. The former is likely a natural statistical preference in weakly interacting systems with periods within the same range. The latter is thought to be evidence of a capture in the 3:2 mean motion resonance of the two binaries. This sets important constraints on evolutionary channels in these systems. V642 Vir is a polar spotted, well-detached, UV Leo-type, low-mass, pre-WUMa (T1 ∼ 4250K, ∼K6V) eclipsing binary. It was observed in 2020 April, May, and June at the Dark Sky Observatory in North Carolina, USA with the 0.81 m reflector of Appalachian State University. A total of 88 timings were used in our 22-year period study which included 12 Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) timings. The O − C plots show a low-amplitude oscillation of residuals that points to the existence of an orbiting third body, a dwarf of minimum mass, 0.15 M ⊙ in an eccentric orbit (e = 0.41), with an orbital period of 20.07 yr. The odd light curves of V642 Virginis indicate that it has polar spots similar to UV Leo and the recently published V1023 Per. Its present large polar spot region indicates that it must have a strong magnetic field and that it is synchronously rotating. The BVRcIc simultaneous Wilson–Devinney Program solution gives a detached binary (primary and secondary components are underfilling their respective Roche Lobes, with 76% and 78% fill outs respectively). The cool spot region models near the pole of the primary component (centered at 10° colatitude) and is angled toward the secondary component. Its large radius (68°) and T-fact (Tspot/Tsurface = 0.69) also attest to the conclusion of the strength of the magnetic field. The small ΔT in the components (∼318 K) and mass ratio near unity (0.9542 ± 0.0005) show that the stars are similar in spectral type (secondary ∼K9V). The inclination is high, ∼86.87 ± 0.04°, yet there is no time of constant light due to the two stars’ essentially equal radii.

We report the discovery of the relatively bright (V = 10.5 mag), doubly eclipsing 2+2 quadruple system CzeV1731. This is the third known system of its kind, in which the masses are determined for all four stars and both the inner and outer orbits are characterized. The inner eclipsing binaries are well-detached systems moving on circular orbits: pair A with period PA = 4.10843 d and pair B with PB = 4.67552 d. The inner binaries contain very similar components (q = 1.0), making the whole system a so-called double twin. The stars in pair B have slightly larger luminosities and masses and pair A shows deeper eclipses. All four components are main-sequence stars of F/G spectral type. The mutual orbit of the two pairs around the system barycenter has a period of about 34 yr and an eccentricity of about 0.38. However, further observations are needed to reveal the overall architecture of the whole system, including the mutual inclinations of all orbits. This is a promising target for interferometry to detect the double at about 59 mas and dMbol < 1 mag. A dozen of new precise times of eclipses were measured for the eclipsing binary DX Cygni as a part of our long-term observational project for studying neglected eclipsing binaries with a short orbital period. Based on a current O − C diagram, we found for the first time that its period is increasing ( d P / P = 1.68 × 10 − 7 day/years) and that times of minima show also significant cyclical changes with a period of about 16 years, caused very probably by a third body orbiting the eclipsing pair. The minimal mass of this companion is 0.49 M⊙. The light curve solution in Phoebe results to the typical Algol-type semidetached configuration where the secondary fills its Roche lobe. The temperature of primary component was fixed to T 1 = 5300 K according to its spectral type, which gives us T 2 = 3330 ± 20 K for the secondary. The photometric mass ratio was estimated q = 0.504 ± 0.012 . We also compare orbital parameters of selected known Algol-type eclipsing binaries with proven mass transfer and a third body.

New CCD observations of V389 Cas were carried out in the observatories in the Czech Republic from 2010 to 2014. These new data were analysed using the program PHOEBE. V389 Cas was found to be a detached eclipsing binary system with two rather different components moving on a circular orbit. Moreover, there was discovered also a δ -Scuti-type behaviour of the secondary component. These pulsations have the period of about 0.037 day. This result is being compared with the previous findings on similar eclipsing-pulsation systems published by Zhang et al. (2013).

This is the first analysis of such a large sample of eccentric eclipsing binaries in our Galaxy, and has enabled us to identify several systems that are worthy of further study. Bringing together data from various databases and surveys, supplemented with new observations, we have been able to trace the long-term evolution of the eccentric orbit over durations extending back up to several decades. Our present study explores a rather different sample of stars to those presented in the previously published catalogue of eccentric eclipsing binaries, sampling to fainter magnitudes, covering later spectral types, sensitive to different orbital periods with more than 50% of our systems having periods longer than six days. The typical apsidal motion in the sample is rather slow (mostly of order of centuries long), although in some cases this is less than 50 yr. All of the systems, except one, have eccentricities less than 0.5, with an average value of 0.23. Several of the stars also show evidence for additional period variability. In particular we can identify three systems in the sample, HD 44093, V611 Pup, and HD 313631, which likely represent relativistic apsidal rotators., GJW gratefully thanks the Leverhulme Trust for financial support through a Fellowship. The eclipsing binaries are still important objects for our understanding of the universe. Especially these ones located within the more complex multiple systems can help us solving the problem of their origin and subsequent evolution of these higher order multiples. Photometry and spectroscopy spanning over more than 25 yr were used for the first complete analysis of the two bright triple systems, namely V348 And and V572 Per. The light curves in photometric filters were combined together with the radial velocities and analyzed simultaneously, yielding the precise physical parameters of the eclipsing components of these multiple systems. The system V348 And consists of two eclipsing components with its orbital period of about 27.7 days. The system is a very detached one, and both eclipses are rather narrow, lasting only about 0.016 of its period. The visual orbit of the wide pair has the period of about 87 yr. All three components of the system are probably of B8-9 spectral type, and the parallax of the system was slightly shifted to the value of 2.92 mas. On the other hand, the system V572 Per shows apsidal motion of its inner orbit, the orbital period being of about 1.2 days, while the apsidal motion of about 48 yr. The components are of A and F spectral types, while the motion with the third component around a common barycenter is only negligible. Eclipsing binaries remain crucial objects for our understanding of the universe. In particular, those that are components of multiple systems can help us solve the problem of the formation of these systems. Analysis of the radial velocities together with the light curve produced for the first time precise physical parameters of the components of the multiple systems V773 Cas, QS Aql, and BR Ind. Their visual orbits were also analyzed, which resulted in slightly improved orbital elements. What is typical for all these systems is that their most dominant source is the third distant component. The system V773 Cas consists of two similar G1-2V stars revolving in a circular orbit and a more distant component of the A3V type. Additionally, the improved value of parallax was calculated to be 17.6 mas. Analysis of QS Aql resulted in the following: the inner eclipsing pair is composed of B6V and F1V stars, and the third component is of about the B6 spectral type. The outer orbit has high eccentricity of about 0.95, and observations near its upcoming periastron passage between the years 2038 and 2040 are of high importance. Also, the parallax of the system was derived to be about 2.89 mas, moving the star much closer to the Sun than originally assumed. The system BR Ind was found to be a quadruple star consisting of two eclipsing K dwarfs orbiting each other with a period of 1.786 days; the distant component is a single-lined spectroscopic binary with an orbital period of about 6 days. New CCD photometric observations of fourteen short-period low-mass eclipsing binaries (LMB) in the photometric filters I, R and V were used for the light curve analysis. There still exists a discrepancy between radii as observed and those derived from the theoretical modelling for LMB in general. Mass calibration of all observed LMB was done using only the photometric indices. The light curve modelling of these selected systems were performed, yielding the new derived masses and radii for both components. We compared these systems with the compilation of other known double-lined LMB systems with uncertainties of masses and radii less then 5 \%, which includes 66 components of binaries where both spectroscopy and photometry were combined together. All of our systems are circular short-period binaries, and for some of them the photospheric spots were also used. A purely photometric study of the light curves without spectroscopy seems unable to achieve high enough precision and accuracy in the masses and radii to provide for a meaningful test of the M-R relation for low-mass stars., Comment: 13 pages, 3 figures

The available photometry mainly from the WASP database was used for the first light curve analysis of eight eclipsing binary systems located in the Lyncis constellation: RV Lyn, AA Lyn, AH Lyn, CD Lyn, CF Lyn, DR Lyn, EK Lyn, and FS Lyn. Most of these eclipsing stars are detached ones, having the orbital periods from 0.54 to 2.3 days. For the systems AA Lyn and CF Lyn a non-negligible third light was detected during the light curve solution. Moreover, 284 new times of minima for these binaries were derived, trying to identify the period variations. More than three hundred years ago, Ole Romer measured the speed of light only by observing the periodic shifting of the observed eclipse arrival times of Jupiter's moons arising from the varying Earth-Jupiter distance. The same method of measuring the periodic modulation of delays is still used in astrophysics. The ideal laboratories for this effect are eclipsing binaries. The unique system V994 Her consists of two eclipsing binaries orbiting each other. However, until now it was not certain whether these are gravitationally bound and what their orbital period is. We show that the system is in fact quintuple and the two eclipsing binaries are orbiting each other with period about 6.3 years. This analysis was made only from studying the periodic modulation of the two periods, when during the periastron passage one binary has an apparently shorter period, while the other one longer, exactly as required by a theory. Context. Compact hierarchical systems are important because the effects caused by the dynamical interaction among its members occur ona human timescale. These interactions play a role in the formation of close binaries through Kozai cycles with tides. One such system is ξ Tauri: it has three hierarchical orbits: 7.14 d (eclipsing components Aa, Ab), 145 d (components Aa+Ab, B), and 51 yr (components Aa+Ab+B, C).Aims. We aim to obtain physical properties of the system and to study the dynamical interaction between its components.Methods. Our analysis is based on a large series of spectroscopic photometric (including space-borne) observations and long-baseline optical and infrared spectro-interferometric observations. We used two approaches to infer the system properties: a set of observation-specific models, where all components have elliptical trajectories, and an N -body model, which computes the trajectory of each component by integrating Newton’s equations of motion.Results. The triple subsystem exhibits clear signs of dynamical interaction. The most pronounced are the advance of the apsidal line and eclipse-timing variations. We determined the geometry of all three orbits using both observation-specific and N -body models. The latter correctly accounted for observed effects of the dynamical interaction, predicted cyclic variations of orbital inclinations, and determined the sense of motion of all orbits. Using perturbation theory, we demonstrate that prominent secular and periodic dynamical effects are explainable with a quadrupole interaction. We constrained the basic properties of all components, especially of members of the inner triple subsystem and detected rapid low-amplitude light variations that we attribute to co-rotating surface structures of component B. We also estimated the radius of component B. Properties of component C remain uncertain because of its low relative luminosity. We provide an independent estimate of the distance to the system.Conclusions. The accuracy and consistency of our results make ξ Tau an excellent test bed for models of formation and evolution of hierarchical systems.

CCD observations of 68 eclipsing binary systems, candidates for containing {\delta} Scuti components, were obtained. Their light curves are analysed using the PERIOD04 software for possible pulsational behaviour. For the systems QY Aql, CZ Aqr, TY Cap, WY Cet, UW Cyg, HL Dra, HZ Dra, AU Lac, CL Lyn and IO UMa, complete light curves were observed due to the detection of a pulsating component. All of them, except QY Aql and IO UMa, are analysed with modern astronomical softwares in order to determine their geometrical and pulsational characteristics. Spectroscopic observations of WY Cet and UW Cyg were used to estimate the spectral class of their primary components, while for HZ Dra radial velocities of its primary were measured. O - C diagram analysis was performed for the cases showing peculiar orbital period variations, namely CZ Aqr, TY Cap, WY Cet and UW Cyg, with the aim of obtaining a comprehensive picture of these systems. An updated catalogue of 74 close binaries including a {\delta} Scuti companion is presented. Moreover, a connection between orbital and pulsation periods, as well as a correlation between evolutionary status and dominant pulsation frequency for these systems, is discussed.

Main aim of this paper is the first detailed analysis of multiple system V2083 Cyg and to reveal its basic physical properties. The system was studied by method of the light and radial velocity curves analysis, together with the interferometric data of the visual pair obtained during a last century. There was found that the close subsystem contains two very similar stars of spectral type A7-8. Moreover, the third body is orbiting around this pair with period of about 177 years. Due to the discrepancy of total mass as derived from two methods, there arises that the third body is maybe also a binary, or some object with lower luminosity but higher mass than normal main-sequence star. Another explanation is that the Hipparcos value of parallax is incorrect and the system is much closer to the Sun.

We present the next results of our long-term observational project to analyze the variations in the orbital periods of low-mass eclipsing binaries. About 70 new precise mid-eclipse times recorded with a CCD were obtained for two eclipsing binaries with short orbital periods: GU Boo (P = 0.​d49) and YY Gem (0.​d81). Observed-minus-calculated diagrams of the stars were analyzed using all reliable timings, and new parameters of the light-time effect were obtained. We derived for the first time or improved the short orbital periods of possible third bodies of 11 and 54 years for these low-mass binaries, respectively. We calculated that the minimum masses of the third components are close to 50 MJup, which corresponds to the mass of brown dwarfs. The multiplicity of these systems also plays an important role in the precise determination of their physical parameters.

Mass exchange and mass loss in close binaries can significantly affect their evolution, but a complete self-consistent theory of these processes is still to be developed. Processes such as radiative shielding due to a hot-spot region, or a hydrodynamical interaction of different parts of the gas stream have been studied previously. In order to test the respective predictions, it is necessary to carry out detailed observations of binaries undergoing the largescale mass exchange, especially for those that are in the rapid transfer phase.βLyr A is an archetype of such a system, having a long and rich observational history. Our goal for this first study is to quantitatively estimate the geometry and physical properties of the optically thick components, namely the Roche-lobe filling mass-losing star, and the accretion disk surrounding the mass-gaining star ofβLyr A. A series of continuum visible and NIR spectro-interferometric observations by the NPOI, CHARA/MIRC and VEGA instruments covering the whole orbit ofβLyr A acquired during a two-week campaign in 2013 were complemented withUBVRphotometric observations acquired during a three-year monitoring of the system. We included NUV and FUV observations from OAO A-2, IUE, and Voyager satellites. All these observations were compared to a complex model of the system. It is based on the simple LTE radiative transfer codeSHELLSPEC, which was substantially extended to compute all interferometric observables and to perform both global and local optimization of system parameters. Several shapes of the accretion disk were successfully tested – slab, wedge, and a disk with an exponential vertical profile – and the following properties were consistently found: the radius of the outer rim is 30.0±1.0R⊙, the semithickness of the disk 6.5±1.0R⊙, and the binary orbital inclinationi=93.5±1.0deg. The temperature profile is a power-law or a steady-disk in case of the wedge geometry. The properties of the accretion disk indicate that it cannot be in a vertical hydrostatic equilibrium, which is in accord with the ongoing mass transfer. The hot spot was also detected in the continuum but is interpreted as a hotter part of the accretion disk illuminated by the donor. As a by-product, accurate kinematic and radiative properties ofβLyr B were determined.

The multiple system V505 Sagittarii is composed of at least three stars: a compact eclipsing pair and a distant component, whose orbit is measured directly using speckle interferometry. In order to explain the observed orbit of the third body in V505 Sagittarii and also other observable quantities, namely the minima timings of the eclipsing binary and three different radial velocities (RVs) detected in the spectrum, we thoroughly test a fourth-body hypothesis—a perturbation by a dim, yet-unobserved object. We use an N-body numerical integrator to simulate future and past orbital evolution of three or four components in this system. We construct a suitable χ 2 metric from all available speckle-interferometry, minima-timings, and RV data and we scan a part of a parameter space to get at least some of the possible solutions. In principle, we are able to explain all observable quantities by the presence of a fourth body, but the resulting likelihood of this hypothesis is very low. We also discuss other theoretical explanations of the minima-timing variations. Further observations of the minima timings during the next decade or high-resolution spectroscopic data can significantly constrain the model.

A new catalog of visual double systems containing eclipsing binaries as one component is presented. The main purpose of this catalog is to compile a complete list of all known multiples of this variety, both for current analysis and to highlight those in need of additional observations. All available photometric and astrometric data were analyzed, resulting in new orbits for eight systems and new times of minimum light for a number of the eclipsing binaries. Some of the systems in the catalog have acceptable solutions for their visual orbits, although in most cases their orbital periods are too long for simultaneous analysis. Aims: New CCD observations for semidetached and detached eclipsing binaries from the Large Magellanic Cloud were carried out using the Danish 1.54-m telescope located at the La Silla Observatory in Chile. The selected systems were monitored for their times of minima, which were required to be able to study the period changes taking place in them. In addition, many new times of minima were derived from the photometric surveys OGLE-II, OGLE-III, and MACHO. Methods: The O-C diagrams of minima timings were analysed using the hypothesis of the light-travel time effect, i.e. assuming the orbital motion around a common barycenter with the distant component. Moreover, the light curves of these systems were also analysed using the program PHOEBE, which provided the physical parameters of the stars. Results: For the first time, in this study we derived the relatively short periods of modulation in these systems, which relates to third bodies. The orbital periods resulted from 3.6 to 11.3 yr and the eccentricities were found to be up to 0.64. This is the first time that this kind of analysis for the set of extragalactic sources has been performed. The Wolf-Rayet system OGLE-LMC-ECL-08823 is the most mysterious one, owing to the resultant high mass function. Another system, OGLE-LMC-ECL-19996, was found to contain a third body with a very high mass (M3,min = 26M0). One system (OGLE-LMC-ECL-09971) is suspicious because of its eccentricity, and another one (OGLE-LMC-ECL-20162) shows some light curve variability, with a possible flare-like or microlensing-like event. The available photometry from the online databases were used for the first light curve analysis of eight eclipsing binary systems EI Aur, XY Dra, BP Dra, DD Her, VX Lac, WX Lib, RZ Lyn, and TY Tri. All these stars are of Algol-type, having the detached components and the orbital periods from 0.92 to 6.8 days. For the systems EI Aur and BP Dra the large amount of the third light was detected during the light curve solution. Moreover, 468 new times of minima for these binaries were derived, trying to identify the period variations. For the systems XY Dra and VX Lac the third bodies were detected with the periods 17.7, and 49.3 years, respectively., 17 pages, 16 figures, published in: 2016NewA...42....1Z

The contact eclipsing binary system XX Leonis (p = 0.97 days, Sp A9) has been analysed using the PHOEBE programme, based on the Wilson–Devinney code. The BVRI light curves were obtained during spring 2006 using the 20-cm telescope and ST-7 CCD detector. The effective temperature of the primary component determined from the photometric analysis is T = (7342 ± 14) K, the inclination of the orbit is i = (84.83 ± 0.29)° and the photometric mass ratio q = (0.40 ± 0.01). The third-body hypothesis was also suggested; based on a period analysis using 57 minimum times this gave a period for the third body of p3 = (59.66 ± 0.05) yr, an amplitude of A = (0.036 ± 0.028) day and zero eccentricity, which yields as a minimum mass M3,min = (0.91 ± 0.01) M⊙.

Four eclipsing binaries, which show apparent changes of period, have been studied with respect to a possible presence of the light time effect. With a least squares method we calculated new light elements of these systems, the mass function of the predicted third body, and its minimum mass. Context: Multiple stellar systems are unique laboratories for astrophysics. Analysis of their orbital dynamics may reveal invaluable information about the physical properties of the participating stars. Unfortunately, there are only a few known and well described multiple systems, this is even more so for systems located outside the Milky Way galaxy. A particularly interesting situation occurs when the inner binary in a compact triple system is eclipsing. This is because the stellar interaction, typically resulting in precession of orbital planes, may be observable as a variation of depth of the eclipses on a long timescale. Aims: We aim to present a novel method to determine compact triples using publicly available photometric data from large surveys. Here we apply it to eclipsing binaries (EBs) in Magellanic Clouds from OGLE III database. Methods: We analyzed light curves (LCs) of 26121 LMC and 6138 SMC EBs with the goal to identify those for which the orbital inclination varies in time. Archival LCs of the selected systems, when complemented by our own observations with Danish 1.54m telescope, were thoroughly analyzed using the PHOEBE program. Time dependence of the EB's inclination was described using the theory of orbital-plane precession. By observing the parameter-dependence of the precession rate, we were able to constrain the third companion mass and its orbital period around EB. Results: We identified 58 candidates of new compact triples in Magellanic Clouds. This is the largest published sample of such systems so far. Eight of them were analyzed thoroughly and physical parameters of inner binary were determined together with an estimation of basic characteristics of the third star. Analyzing the available photometry from the Kepler satellite and other databases, we performed detailed light curve modeling of 10 eclipsing binary systems that were found to exhibit a periodic modulation of their orbital periods. All of the selected systems are detached Algol type, with orbital periods from 0.9 to 2.9 days. In total, 9448 times of minimum for these binaries were analyzed in an attempt to identify the period variations caused by the third bodies in these systems. The well-known method of the light-travel time effect was used for the analysis. The orbital periods of the outer bodies were found to be between 1 and 14 years. This hypothesis makes such systems interesting for future prospective detections of these components, despite their low predicted masses. Considering the dynamical interaction between the orbits, the system KIC 3440230 seems to be the most interesting, in which one would expect the detection of some effects (i.e., changing the inclination) even after a few years or decades of observations., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures, 4 tables, published in: 2015AJ....149..197Z

We analyse spectroscopic observations of the B[e] star HD 50138 (MWC 158, V743 Mon, or IRAS 06491-0654), a member of the FS CMa group, obtained over the last twenty years. Four different epochs are identified in the observational data, where the variability of the spectral features is substantially different. Additionally, two long periods of (3 000 +/- 500) and (5 000 +/- 1000) days are found in the variations of the equivalent widths of the H alpha and [OI] 6300 A lines and radial velocities of the H alpha line violet peak. Modest signatures of a regular period of ~34 days in the radial velocities of the H alpha red peak and H beta central depression are found in the season 2013/2014. The H alpha V/R changes indicate a periodicity of ~50 days. The correlations between individual spectral features significantly restricts the model of the object and suggest that it is most likely a binary system with a highly distorted disc with spiral arms around the primary component. At the same time, no obvious signs of the secondary component has been found in the object's spectrum.

V746 Cas is known to be a triple system composed of a close binary with an alternatively reported period of either 25d:4 or 27d:8 and a distant third component in a 170 yr (62 000 d) orbit. The object was also reported to exhibit multiperiodic light variations with periods from 0d: 83 to 2d: 50, on the basis of which it was classified as a slowly pulsating B star. Interest in further investigation of this system was raised by the recent detection of a variable magnetic field. Analysing spectra from four instruments, earlier published radial velocities, and several sets of photometric observations, we arrived at the following conclusions: (1) The optical spectrum is dominated by the lines of the B-type primary (Teff 1 16 500(100)K), contributing 70% of the light in the optical region, and a slightly cooler B tertiary (Teff 3 13 620(150)K). The lines of the low-mass secondary are below our detection threshold; we estimate that it could be a normal A or F star. (2) We resolved the ambiguity in the value of the inner binary period and arrived at a linear ephemeris of Tsuper: conj: = HJD 2 443 838:78(81) + 25d:41569(42) × E. (3) The intensity of the magnetic field undergoes a sinusoidal variation in phase with one of the known photometric periods, namely 2d:503867(19), which we identify with the rotational period of the tertiary. (4) The second dominant photometric 1d: 0649524(40) period is tentatively identified with the rotational period of the broad-lined B-type primary, but this interpretation is much less certain and needs further verification. (5) If our interpretation of photometric periods is confirmed, the classification of the object as a slowly pulsating B star should be revised. The minimum timings of eclipsing binaries V418 Aql, SU Boo, RV CVn, CR Cas, GV Cyg, V432 Per, and BD+42 2782 were collected and analyzed. Their long-term behavior was studied via period analysis, revealing a periodic term in eclipse times. We derived 576 new times of minimum. Hence, to describe the periodic variation, a thirdbody hypothesis was proposed and the resulting orbital periods are as follows: 70, 7.4, 53, 37, 27, 53, and 18 yr, respectively. For the system V432 Per an additional 9.5 yr variation was also found. The predicted minimum masses of these distant bodies were calculated and their detectability discussed. The light curves of SU Boo and RV CVn were analyzed using the PHOEBE program, resulting in physical parameters of the components. Reliable determination of the basic physical properties of hot emission-line binaries with Roche-lobe filling secondaries is important for developing the theory of mass exchange in binaries. It is a very hard task, however, which is complicated by the presence of circumstellar matter in these systems. So far, only a small number of systems with accurate values of component masses, radii, and other properties are known. Here, we report the first detailed study of a new representative of this class of binaries, BR CMi, based on the analysis of radial velocities and multichannel photometry from several observatories, and compare its physical properties with those for other well-studied systems. BR CMi is an ellipsoidal variable seen under an intermediate orbital inclination of ~51 degrees, and it has an orbital period of 12.919059(15) d and a circular orbit. We used the disentangled component spectra to estimate the effective temperatures 9500(200) K and 4655(50) K by comparing them with model spectra. They correspond to spectral types B9.5e and G8III. We also used the disentangled spectra of both binary components as templates for the 2-D cross-correlation to obtain accurate RVs and a reliable orbital solution. Some evidence of a secular period increase at a rate of 1.1+/-0.5 s per year was found. This, together with a very low mass ratio of 0.06 and a normal mass and radius of the mass gaining component, indicates that BR CMi is in a slow phase of the mass exchange after the mass-ratio reversal. Aims: The Danish 1.54-meter telescope at the La Silla observatory was used for photometric monitoring of selected eccentric eclipsing binaries located in the Small Magellanic Cloud. The new times of minima were derived for these systems, which are needed for accurate determination of the apsidal motion. Moreover, many new times of minima were derived from the photometric databases OGLE and MACHO. Eighteen early-type eccentric-orbit eclipsing binaries were studied. Methods: Their (O-C) diagrams of minima timings were analysed and the parameters of the apsidal motion were obtained. The light curves of these eighteen binaries were analysed using the program PHOEBE, giving the light curve parameters. For several systems the additional third light also was detected. Results: We derived for the first time and significantly improved the relatively short periods of apsidal motion from 19 to 142 years for these systems. The relativistic effects are weak, up to 10% of the total apsidal motion rate. For one system (OGLE-SMC-ECL-0888), the third-body hypothesis was also presented, which agrees with high value of the third light for this system detected during the light curve solution., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, 4 tables, plus the appendix data tables with times of minima. The main aim of the present paper is the very first analysis of the binary-orbit precession out of our Galaxy. The light curves of an eclipsing binary MACHO 82.8043.171 in the Large Magellanic cloud (LMC) were studied in order to analyse the long-term evolution of its orbit. It is a detached system that is undergoing rapid orbit precession. The inclination of the orbit towards the observer has been changing, which has caused the eclipse depth to become lower over the past decade, and this is ongoing. The period of this effect was derived as only about 77 years, so it is the second fastest nodal motion known amongst such systems nowadays. This is the first analysis of an extragalactic binary with nodal precession. This effect is probably caused by a distant third body orbiting the pair, which could potentially be detected via spectroscopy. Some preliminary estimates of this body are presented. Aims. As part of the long-term Ondrejov and Ostrava observational projects, we aim to measure the precise times of minimum light for eccentric eclipsing binaries, needed for accurate determination of apsidal motion. Over fifty new times of minimum light recorded with CCD photometers were obtained for five early-type and eccentric-orbit eclipsing binaries: V785 Cas (P = 2.(d)70, e = 0.09), V821 Cas (1.(d)77, 0.14), V796 Cyg (1.(d)48, 0.07), V398 Lac (5.(d)41, 0.23), and V871 Per (3.(d)02, 0.24). Methods. O-C diagrams of binaries were analysed using all reliable timings found in the literature, and new elements of apsidal motion were obtained. Results. We derived for the first time or improved the relatively short periods of apsidal motion of about 83, 140, 33, 440, and 70 years for V785 Cas, V821 Cas, V796 Cyg, V398 Lac, and V871 Per, respectively. The internal structure constants, log k(2), for V821 Cas and V398 Lac are then found to be -2.70 and -2.35, under the assumption that the component stars rotate pseudosynchronously. Aims: We present a new updated study of the unique quintuple system of two eclipsing binaries, V994 Her. Methods: Based on new obtained photometric observations, we analysed the period variations of the two eclipsing pairs of V994 Her. Results: We found that the orbital period of the two eclipsing binaries around a common barycenter is about 2.9 yrs instead of the original period, which was reported as 6.3 yrs. Moreover, the system now seems to be close to coplanar (i ~ 84deg), and we also revised the individual masses of all four eclipsing components. The two eclipsing pairs show slow apsidal motion with periods of about 116 and 111 yrs, respectively. Pairs A and B are distant by about 17 mas on the sky, which is encouraging for observers because an interferometric detection may be possible in the next years. Conclusions: All of these results are based on the photometric observations of V994 Her and its detailed analysis of the period changes of the two eclipsing binaries., 4 pages, 4 figures, 3 tables.
