Extensive sheep grazing in the West Carpathians is a very important management tool for the protection of the traditional landscape character of the Central European countryside, as well as providing biologically valuable habitats of pastures and meadows. In this paper we describe the main characteristics of sheep farming in the Beskydy region and test the hypothesis that large carnivores are a limiting factor for sheep grazing management of landscapes in this region, the only area of the Czech Republic where all three species of large European carnivores – the Eurasian lynx (Lynx lynx), grey wolf (Canis lupus) and brown bear (Ursus arctos) – occur. Data obtained from the monitoring of large carnivores and a questionnaire-based survey of the perspective of sheep farmers in the Beskydy region were analysed. Although the lynx is the most abundant large predator within the study area, the highest number of attacks on sheep was attributed to wolves. However, the annual frequency of attacks was very low and, moreover, an important number of the attacks could have been committed by dogs rather than wolves. From the perspective of sheep breeders, the major economic factor is a low consumer demand for sheep products, and not the presence of large carnivores. However farmers expressed a view that some level of safeguarding was needed and this should come in the form of financial compensation for damage resulting from attacks on sheep by large predators and a modification of the current system of agricultural subsidies. Subsidies for sheep breeders should respect the regional specifics including the risk arising from the presence of large carnivores and provide support for active measures to protect the livestock against them. Regarding the protection of populations of large carnivores in the Beskydy Mountains, it will be necessary to continue to monitor their presence.

Nest predation is a crucial factor influencing breeding success in birds. One possible way to protect nests is to modify parental activity in the vicinity of the nest. Here, we provide experimental evidence for an adjustment of incubation pattern during periods when there is an increased risk of nest predation in a small passerine. We compared the behaviour of incubating meadow pipit (Anthus pratensis) females during presentations of stuffed dummies of a nest predator (the magpie Pica pica) and a harmless intruder (the crossbill Loxia curvirostra) and during an undisturbed control incubation period. Females significantly decreased their activity in the presence of the nest predator. Specifically, after being flushed out, they returned to the nest later and moved to and from the nest less than when the harmless intruder was present. These results document the ability of birds to assess the nest predation risk and adjust their appropriate incubation strategy.

Incubation behaviour of the Meadow Pipit (Anthus pratensis) was investigated in mountainous conditions in Central Europe (the Krkonose Mountains of the Czech Republic), in relation to the time of day and weather. Twenty-four-hour recordings of incubation behaviour were made with a time-lapse video recorder and mini-camera. The influences of year, nest, time of day, temperature, precipitation and previous bouts on session and recess duration were then analysed. The incubation behaviour of Meadow Pipits in general did not differ from the behaviour of other small female-only incubating passerines. Despite relatively cold climatic conditions in the study area, the mean length of sessions and recesses (19.69 and 5.53 min), as well as nest-attentiveness (77.19%), agreed with values which are most often found in other species. However, the Meadow Pipit incubation in the study area was, in terms of nest-attentiveness, more intensive than in other surveyed populations of this species. Incubation behaviour was strongly influenced by the time of day—incubating females increased nest-attentiveness during the morning and evening hours. After the time of day was filtered out, the influence of temperature was found only on sessions (not recesses). Sessions were the longest when the air temperature was approximately 12–16°C and shortened when the temperature was lower or higher. Precipitation forced female Meadow Pipits to take longer sessions and shorter recesses, which corresponds to their general tendency to give priority to the needs of the clutch ahead of their own temporary feeding needs.

Hosts of brood parasites may vary geographically in their ability to resist parasitism. In contrast, geographic variation in defenses, such as egg rejection, is not expected to be present or vary geographically in unsuitable hosts. We examined spatial patterns of resistance in the great tit Parus major, a passerine that is a textbook example of an unsuitable host for brood parasites because of its hole-nesting habits. We experimentally tested for spatial variation in foreign egg rejection in 395 nests across latitudinal gradients in China (5 populations) and Europe (7 populations). In China, egg rejection rates were very high but showed a latitudinal gradient from 100% in the south to 52% in the north. In Europe, rejection rates were very low (on average only 4%) and did not vary latitudinally. The egg ejection rate patterns matched geographic patterns of parasitism risk with rejection probabilities decreasing with latitude (a surrogate measure of the diversity of brood parasites). The present study for the first time challenges the idea that hole-nesting birds did not evolve resistance mechanisms against brood parasites and highlights the importance of large-scale geographic comparisons in ecological research. © The Author 2016; all rights reserved. Literature review was performed for the molten salt oxidation technology in order to collect all available scientific and engineering information for further use of this technology in nuclear applications. This report provides a summary of a review of scientific and engineering literature on MSO treatment of a wide variety of radioactive wastes, organic compound gasification, and related studies such as radioactive spent salt processing that was found important for further development of the MSO technology in the nuclear field for radioactive waste treatment. Miscellaneous nonnuclear uses of molten salts, such as converting carbon monoxide to carbon dioxide, are not discussed.

Distraction displays to a human were studied in the Meadow Pipit (Anthus pratensis) females in Central (Jeseniky Mountains-Czech Republic; 50 N1 7E) and Northern European mountains (Tydal area-Central Norway; 63 N1 2E) between 1995 and 1998. Three risk-dependent variables were scored and we found that flushing and settling distances of pipit females decreased with increasing intensity of display both in the Central and the Northern Europe locations. Paren- tal risk taking did not markedly diAer between studied populations, although, in particular, larger brood size and reduced opportunity to re-nest should contribute to a higher intensity of nest defence in the Northern than in the Central European mountains. Moreover, the level of risk taken was not significantly dependent on the air temperature, age of brood and brood size in both study areas, when com- pared separately. These results do not support the findings of most previous stu- dies on nest defence in birds. Possible causes of our contradictory results are discussed with respect to the reproductive value and the feedback hypotheses.

For the purpose of accumulation of particulate matter from Diesel engine exhaust gas, particle filters are used (referred to as DPF or FAP filters in the automotive industry). However, the cost of these filters is quite high. As the emission limits become stricter, the requirements for PM collection are rising accordingly. Particulate matters are very dangerous for human health and these are not invisible for human eye. They can often cause various diseases of the respiratory tract, even what can cause lung cancer. Performed numerical simulations were used to analyze particle filter behavior under various operating modes. The simulations were especially focused on selected critical states of particle filter, when engine is switched to emergency regime. The aim was to prevent and avoid critical situations due the filter behavior understanding. The numerical simulations were based on experimental analysis of used diesel particle filters.

Fabric filters are used in the wide range of industrial technologies for cleaning of incoming or exhaust gases. To achieve maximal efficiency of the discrete phase separation and long lifetime of the filter hoses, it is necessary to ensure uniform load on filter surface and to avoid impacts of heavy particles with high velocities to the filter hoses. The paper deals with numerical simulation of two phase flow field in a large fabric filter. The filter is composed of six chambers with approx. 1600 filter hoses in total. The model was simplified to one half of the filter, the filter hoses walls were substituted by porous zones. The model settings were based on experimental data, especially on the filter pressure drop. Unsteady simulations with different turbulence models were done. Flow field together with particles trajectories were analyzed. The results were compared with experimental observations.
