The damping ($\Gamma_a$) of the transverse acoustic (TA) phonon in single crystals of the relaxor $KTa_{1-x}Nb_xO_3$ with x=0.15-0.17 was studied by means of high resolution inelastic cold neutron scattering near the (200) B.Z. point where diffuse scattering is absent, although it is present near (110). In a wide range of temperatures centered on the phase transition, T=195K-108K, the TA phonon width (damping) exhibits a step increase around momentum q=0.07, goes through a shallow maximum at q=0.09-0.12 and remains high up to the highest momentum studied of q=0.16. These experimental results are explained in terms of a resonant interaction between the TA phonon and the collective or correlated reorientation through tunneling of the off-center Nb+5 ions. The observed TA damping is successfully reproduced in a simple model that includes an interaction between the TA phonon and a dispersionless localized mode (LM) with frequency $\omega_L$ and damping $\Gamma_L$ ($\Gamma_L < \omega_L$), itself coupled to the transverse optic (TO) mode. Maximum damping of the TA phonon occurs when its frequency $\omega_a \approx{\omega_L}$. $\omega_L$ and $\Gamma_L$ are moderately dependent on temperature but the oscillator strength, $M_2$, of the resonant damping exhibits a strong maximum in the range $T\sim{150 K-120 K}$ in which neutron diffuse scattering near the (110) B.Z. point is also maximum and the dielectric susceptibility exhibits the relaxor behavior. The maximum value of M appears to be due to the increasing number of polar nanodomains. In support of the proposed model, the observed value of $\omega_L$ is found to be similar to the estimate previously obtained by Girshberg and Yacoby. Alternatively, the TA phonon damping can be successfully fitted in the framework of an empirical Havriliak - Negami (HN) relaxation model that includes a strong resonance-like transient contribution.

We present an inelastic neutron scattering study of phonon lineshapes in the vortex state of the type-II superconductor YNi$_2$B$_2$C. In a previous study [Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{101}, 237002 (2008)] it was shown that certain phonons exhibit a clear signature of the superconducting gap $2\Delta$ on entering the superconducting state. Our interest was to find out whether or not the lineshape of such phonons reflects the inhomogeneous nature of the vortex state induced by a magnetic field smaller than the upper critical field $B_{c2}$ .We found that this is indeed the case because the observed phonon lineshapes can be well described by a model considering the phonon as a local probe of the spatial variation of the superconducting gap. We found that even at $B=3\,\rm{T}$, where the inter-vortex distance is less than $300\,$\AA, the phonon lineshape still shows evidence for a variation of the gap.

The complex interaction between transverse acoustic (TA) phonon, transverse optic (TO) phonon and polar nano-domains (PND) in the relaxor ferroelectric KTa1-xNbxO3 (KTN) is studied by means of high resolution diffuse and inelastic neutron scattering. The experimental results and a comparison with lead relaxors, suggest a new scattering mechanism of the TA phonon by localized modes in PNDs. A theoretical model is developed, which accurately predicts the evolution of the TA damping with temperature and wavevector. Such a mechanism suggests the possible use of high frequency acoustic modes for the study of nanocomposite materials., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures

We report measurements of phonon dispersion in CaC$_6$ using inelastic X-ray and neutron scattering. We find good overall agreement, particularly in the 50 meV energy region, between experimental data and first-principles density-functional-theory calculations. However, on the longitudinal dispersion along the $(1 1 1)$ axis of the rhombohedral representation, we find an unexpected anti-crossing with an additional longitudinal mode, at about 11 meV. At a comparable energy, we observe also unexpected intensity on the in-plane direction. These results resolve the previous incorrect assignment of a longitudinal phonon mode to a transverse mode in the same energy range. By calculating the electron susceptibility from first principles we show that this longitudinal excitation is unlikely to be due to a plasmon and consequently can probably be due to defects or vacancies present in the sample., Comment: Accepted for publication in Physical Review B

Inelastic neutron scattering measurements on the archetypical electron-doped material Nd{1.85}Ce{0.15}CuO4 up to high relative magnetic field strength, H/Hc2 ~ 50%, reveal a simple linear magnetic-field effect on the superconducting magnetic gap and the absence of field-induced in-gap states. The extrapolated gap-closing field value is consistent with the upper critical field Hc2, and the high-field response resembles that of the paramagnetic normal state., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures; (v2) added reference; published in Phys. A systematic inelastic neutron scattering study of the superexchange interaction in three different undoped monolayer cuprates (La_2CuO_4, Nd_2CuO_4 and Pr_2CuO_4) has been performed using conventional triple axis technique. We deduce the in-plane antiferromagnetic (AF) superexchange coupling $J$ which actually presents no simple relation versus crystallographic parameters. The absolute spectral weight of the spin susceptibility has been obtained and it is found to be smaller than expected even when quantum corrections of the AF ground state are taken into account., Comment: 13 pages, 1 table, 3 figures
