Methods: We retrieved data from the national database on SARS-CoV-2 infections. We studied in-family transmission. The level of viral load was categorized as high, moderate, or low based on the cycle threshold values. Results: We studied 203 SARS-CoV-2-infected children (median age: 11 years; range: 6 days to 18.4 years); 111 (54.7%) had an asymptomatic infection. Background: Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disease, mostly presenting with characteristic motor symptoms. Organochlorines (OC) are a class of widely-used pesticides that have been included among the list of environmental factors incriminated in PD pathogenesis. However, most studies reporting this association are based on questionnaires, and few have reported exposure data. Aim: To examine the relationship between OC blood concentrations and PD risk. Methods: In the present study, we studied the concentrations of 8 OC compounds (hexachlorobenzene, heptachlor, hepachlor epoxide, c-chlordane, a-chlordane, p,p’-DDE, DDD, DDT) in 104 Greek PD patients and 110 healthy controls. Results: All substances studied were present in at least one sample. The most frequently detected (above the level of quantification) pesticides were p,p’-DDE (n = 214, 100 % of both groups) and hexachlorobenzene, HCB (n = 189, cases 46.5 %, controls 53.5 %). Higher levels of DDE were detected among PD patients in comparison to controls by using logistic regression analysis to control for confounders [Odds Ratio, OR (95 % confidence interval, C.I.)]: 2.592,(1.29–5.21)], whilst lower levels of HCB were detect among PD patients [OR,95 %CI:0.176(0.09−0.35)]. Conclusions: Our data suggest that exposure to specific OCs is related to the risk of PD. Further studies, using real exposure data, are needed in order to confirm and extend these findings. © 2020

OBJECTIVES: We evaluated the in vitro activity of ceftolozane/tazobactam and comparator agents against MDR non-MBL Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolates collected from nine Greek hospitals and we assessed the potential synergistic interaction between ceftolozane/tazobactam and amikacin. METHODS: A total of 160 non-MBL P. aeruginosa isolates collected in 2016 were tested for susceptibility to ceftolozane/tazobactam and seven comparator agents including ceftazidime/avibactam. Time-kill assays were performed for synergy testing using ceftolozane/tazobactam 60 or 7.5 mg/L, corresponding to the peak and trough concentrations of a 1.5 g q8h dose, respectively, in combination with 69 mg/L amikacin, corresponding to the free peak plasma concentration. Synergy was defined as a ≥2 log10 cfu/mL reduction compared with the most active agent. RESULTS: Overall, ceftolozane/tazobactam inhibited 64.4% of the P. aeruginosa strains at ≤4 mg/L. Colistin was the most active agent (MIC50/90, 0.5/2 mg/L; 96.3% susceptible) followed by ceftazidime/avibactam (MIC50/90, 4/16 mg/L; 80.6% susceptible). GES-type enzymes were predominantly responsible for ceftolozane/tazobactam resistance; 81.6% of the non-producers were susceptible. MICs for the P. aeruginosa isolates selected for synergy testing were 2-32 mg/L ceftolozane/tazobactam and 2-128 mg/L amikacin. The combination of ceftolozane/tazobactam with amikacin was synergistic against 85.0% of all the isolates tested and against 75.0% of the GES producers. No antagonistic interactions were observed. CONCLUSIONS: Ceftolozane/tazobactam demonstrated good in vitro activity against MDR/XDR P. aeruginosa clinical isolates, including strains with co-resistance to other antipseudomonal drugs. In combination with amikacin, a synergistic interaction at 24 h was observed against 85.0% of P. aeruginosa strains tested, including isolates with ceftolozane/tazobactam MICs of 32 mg/L or GES producers. © The Author(s) 2020. Ioannis Kardamatis was born in Athens in 1859. He studied medicine at the National University of Athens (in 1932, it was renamed to National and Kapodistrian University of Athens) and specialized in internal medicine and pediatrics in Paris and Brussels. He pioneered the anti-malaria battle in Greece in 1905. In 1909, he was elected lecturer at the Chair of Tropical Diseases and Parasitology at the Medical School of Athens. Moreover, he debated on the erroneous theory of Sir Ronald Ross (1857-1932) and William Henry Samuel Jones (1876-1963) proving that malaria did not provoke the fall of ancient Greece. His original work on malaria comprised more than 150 scientific papers, including monographs. The French Government and Paris Medical Academy awarded his work and research on malaria. In 1915, the Medical School of Athens abolished the chair of Tropical Diseases and Parasitology but Kardamatis continued to contribute to the field of the disease. Sepsis related to Candida famata (C. famata) fungemia is extremely rare in immunocompetent patients. Moreover, septic shock has not been reported due to this yeast. A previously healthy young multi-trauma male, presented septic shock from C. famata, after he had been admitted in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) due to haemorrhagic shock. Risk factors for candidemia in ICU patients are the presence of a central venous catheter (CVC), Total Parenteral Nutrition (TPN), use of broad-spectrum antimicrobials, immunosuppression and the length of ICU stay. The presence of CVCs, prior use of antibiotics, prolonged hospitalization, disruption of skin flora and immunocompromised states have been identified as predisposing risk factors for C. famata fungemia. It is worth noting that the present case concerns a non-immunocompromised patient, but long ICU stay and brain injury may indicate a state of immunoparalysis. Identification of the yeast was performed by partial amplification and sequencing of the 26S ribosomal DNA gene [hypervariable region D1/D2; partial sequencing of the act1 gene confirmed the identity of the strain as Debaryomyces hansenii (GenBank submission ID: 1688297)] The patient quickly recovered from sepsis after initiation of amphotericin B and was discharged on the 60th day. © 2019 The Authors
