We present a scalable method for the control of ion crystals in a grid-based surface electrode Paul trap and characterize it in the context of transport operations that sort and reorder multispecies crystals. By combining co-wiring of control electrodes at translationally symmetric locations in each grid site with the site-wise ability to exchange the voltages applied to two special electrodes gated by a binary input, site-dependent operations are achieved using only a fixed number of analog voltage signals and a single digital input per site. In two separate experimental systems containing nominally identical grid traps, one using $^{171}\mathrm{Yb}^{+}$-$^{138}\mathrm{Ba}^{+}$ crystals and the other $^{137}\mathrm{Ba}^{+}$-$^{88}\mathrm{Sr}^{+}$, we demonstrate this method by characterizing the conditional intra-site crystal reorder and the conditional exchange of ions between adjacent sites on the grid. Averaged across a multi-site region of interest, we measure sub-quanta motional excitation in the axial in-phase and out-of-phase modes of the crystals following these operations at exchange rates of 2.5 kHz. To evaluate models as hypotheses, we developed the method of Flux Mapping to construct a hypothesis space based on dominant runoff generating mechanisms. Acceptable model runs, defined as total simulated flow with similar (and minimal) model error, are mapped to the hypothesis space given their simulated runoff components. In each modeling case, the hypothesis space is the result of an interplay of factors: model structure and parameterization, chosen error metric, and data information content. The aim of this study is to disentangle the role of each factor in model evaluation. We used two model structures (SACRAMENTO and SIMHYD), two parameter sampling approaches (Latin Hypercube Sampling of the parameter space and guided-search of the solution space), three widely used error metrics (Nash-Sutcliffe Efficiency - NSE, Kling-Gupta Efficiency skill score - KGEss, and Willmott refined Index of Agreement - WIA), and hydrological data from a large sample of Australian catchments. First, we characterized how the three error metrics behave under different error types and magnitudes independent of any modeling. We then conducted a series of controlled experiments to unpack the role of each factor in runoff generation hypotheses. We show that KGEss is a more reliable metric compared to NSE and WIA for model evaluation. We further demonstrate that only changing the error metric -- while other factors remain constant -- can change the model solution space and hence vary model performance, parameter sampling sufficiency, and or the flux map. We show how unreliable error metrics and insufficient parameter sampling impair model-based inferences, particularly runoff generation hypotheses.

We report on broadband ferromagnetic resonance linewidth measurements performed on epitaxial Heusler thin films. A large and anisotropic two-magnon scattering linewidth broadening is observed for measurements with the magnetization lying in the film plane, while linewidth measurements with the magnetization saturated perpendicular to the sample plane reveal low Gilbert damping constants of $(1.5\pm0.1)\times 10^{-3}$, $(1.8\pm0.2)\times 10^{-3}$, and $<8\times 10^{-4}$ for Co$_2$MnSi/MgO, Co$_2$MnAl/MgO, and Co$_2$FeAl/MgO, respectively. The in-plane measurements are fit to a model combining Gilbert and two-magnon scattering contributions to the linewidth, revealing a characteristic disorder lengthscale of 10-100 nm., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures

As the global population ages, there is increased interest in living longer and improving one's quality of life in later years. However, studying aging - the decline in body function - is expensive and time-consuming. And despite research success to make model organisms live longer, there still aren't really any feasible solutions for delaying aging in humans. With space travel, scientists couldn't know what it would take to get to the moon. They had to extrapolate from theory and shorter-range tests. Perhaps with aging, we need a similar moonshot philosophy. And though "shot" might imply medicine, perhaps we need to think beyond biological interventions. Like the moon, we seem a long way away from provable therapies to increase human healthspan (the healthy period of one's life) or lifespan (how long one lives). This review therefore focuses on radical proposals. We hope it might stimulate discussion on what we might consider doing significantly differently than ongoing aging research.

A distinguishing feature of spin accumulation in ferromagnet-semiconductor devices is precession of the non-equilibrium spin population of the semiconductor in a magnetic field. This is the basis for detection techniques such as the Hanle effect, but these approaches become less effective as the spin lifetime in the semiconductor decreases. For this reason, no electrical Hanle measurement has been demonstrated in GaAs at room temperature. We show here that by forcing the magnetization in the ferromagnet (the spin injector and detector) to precess at the ferromagnetic resonance frequency, an electrically generated spin accumulation can be detected from 30 to 300 K. At low temperatures, the distinct Larmor precession of the spin accumulation in the semiconductor can be detected by ferromagnetic resonance in an oblique field. We verify the effectiveness of this new spin detection technique by comparing the injection bias and temperature dependence of the measured spin signal to the results obtained using traditional methods. We further show that this new approach enables a measurement of short spin lifetimes (< 100 psec), a regime that is not accessible in semiconductors using traditional Hanle techniques., Comment: 4 figures

Understanding the mechanisms by which cells coordinate their size with their ability to divide has long attracted the interest of biologists. The Target of Rapamycin (TOR) pathway is becoming increasingly recognized as a master regulator of cell size, however less is known how TOR activity might be coupled with the cell cycle. Here, we establish that mTOR complex 1 (mTORC1) promotes cytokinesis through activation of a Rho GTPase-Rho Kinase (ROCK) signaling cascade. Hyperactivation of mTORC1 signaling by depletion of any of its negative regulators: TSC1, TSC2, PTEN, or DEPTOR, induces polyploidy in a rapamycin-sensitive manner. mTORC1 hyperactivation-mediated polyploidization occurs by a prolonged, but ultimately failed attempt at abcission followed by re-fusion. Similar to the effects of ROCK2 overexpression, these mTORC1-driven aberrant cytokinesis events are accompanied by increased Rho-GTP loading, extensive plasma membrane blebbing, and increased actin-myosin contractility, all of which can be rescued by either mTORC1 or ROCK inhibition.
