We present a weak lensing analysis of the galaxy cluster Abell 2390 at z = 0.23 using second moment shape measurements made in 411 short 60s exposures. The exposures are obtained in three broadband photometric filters (g, r, i) using WIYN-ODI. Shape measurement in individual exposures is done using a moment matching algorithm. Forced measurement is used when the moment matching algorithm fails to converge at low signal to noise ratio (SNR). The measurements made in individual images are combined using inverse error weight to obtain accurate shape of sources and hence recover shear. We use PhoSim simulations to validate shear measurements recovered by our pipeline. We find the mass of Abell 2390 is in agreement with previously published results. We also find the E-Mode maps show filamentary structures consistent with baryonic structures and recovers most clusters/groups of galaxies found using Optical and X-Ray data. Thus we demonstrate the feasibility of using Weak Lensing to map large scale structure of the universe. We also find the central portion of the cluster has a bimodal mass distribution and the relative orientation of the peaks are similar to X-Ray. We discuss earlier research on this galaxy cluster and show that a late stage merger accounts for all the observed data., Comment: Accepted in ApJ

We present a self-consistent representation of the atmosphere and implement the interactions of light with the atmosphere using a photon Monte Carlo approach. We compile global climate distributions based on historical data, self-consistent vertical profiles of thermodynamic quantities, spatial models of cloud variation and cover, and global distributions of four kinds of aerosols. We then implement refraction, Rayleigh scattering, molecular interactions, Tyndall-Mie scattering to all photons emitted from astronomical sources and various background components using physics first principles. This results in emergent image properties that include: differential astrometry and elliptical point spread functions predicted completely to the horizon, arcminute-scale spatial-dependent photometry variations at 20 mmag for short exposures, excess background spatial variations at 0.2% due the atmosphere, and a point spread function wing due to water droplets. We reproduce the well-known correlations in image characteristics: correlations in altitude with absolute photometry (overall transmission) and relative photometry (spectrally-dependent transmission), anti-correlations of altitude with differential astrometry (non-ideal astrometric patterns) and background levels, and an anti-correlation in absolute photometry with cloud depth. However, we also find further subtle correlations including an anti-correlation of temperature with background and differential astrometry, a correlation of temperature with absolute and relative photometry, an anti-correlation of absolute photometry with humidity, a correlation of humidity with Lunar background, a significant correlation of PSF wing with cloud depth, an anti-correlation of background with cloud depth, and a correlation of lunar background with cloud depth., Comment: 32 pages, 26 figures, ApJ Accepted

Ongoing progress in laser and accelerator technology opens new possibilities in high-field science, notably to investigate the largely unexplored strong-field quantum electrodynamics (SFQED) regime where electron-positron pairs can be created directly from light-matter or even light-vacuum interactions. Laserless strategies such as beam-beam collisions have also been proposed to access the nonperturbative limit of SFQED. Here we report on a concept to probe SFQED by harnessing the interaction between a high-charge, ultrarelativistic electron beam and a solid conducting target. When impinging onto the target surface, the beam self fields are reflected, partly or fully, depending on the beam shape; in the rest frame of the beam electrons, these fields can exceed the Schwinger field, thus triggering SFQED effects such as quantum nonlinear inverse Compton scattering and nonlinear Breit-Wheeler electron-positron pair creation. Through reduced modeling and kinetic numerical simulations, we show that this single-beam setup can achieve interaction conditions similar to those envisioned in beam-beam collisions, but in a simpler and more controllable way owing to the automatic overlap of the beam and driving fields. This scheme thus eases the way to precision studies of SFQED and is also a promising milestone towards laserless studies of nonperturbative SFQED.

The ESA Euclid mission will provide high-quality imaging for about 1.5 billion galaxies. A software pipeline to automatically process and analyse such a huge amount of data in real time is being developed by the Science Ground Segment of the Euclid Consortium; this pipeline will include a model-fitting algorithm, which will provide photometric and morphological estimates of paramount importance for the core science goals of the mission and for legacy science. The Euclid Morphology Challenge is a comparative investigation of the performance of five model-fitting software packages on simulated Euclid data, aimed at providing the baseline to identify the best suited algorithm to be implemented in the pipeline. In this paper we describe the simulated data set, and we discuss the photometry results. A companion paper (Euclid Collaboration: Bretonni\`ere et al. 2022) is focused on the structural and morphological estimates. We created mock Euclid images simulating five fields of view of 0.48 deg2 each in the $I_E$ band of the VIS instrument, each with three realisations of galaxy profiles (single and double S\'ersic, and 'realistic' profiles obtained with a neural network); for one of the fields in the double S\'ersic realisation, we also simulated images for the three near-infrared $Y_E$, $J_E$ and $H_E$ bands of the NISP-P instrument, and five Rubin/LSST optical complementary bands ($u$, $g$, $r$, $i$, and $z$). To analyse the results we created diagnostic plots and defined ad-hoc metrics. Five model-fitting software packages (DeepLeGATo, Galapagos-2, Morfometryka, ProFit, and SourceXtractor++) were compared, all typically providing good results. (cut), Comment: 29 pages, 33 figures. An electron or electron-positron beam streaming through a plasma is notoriously prone to micro-instabilities. For a dilute ultrarelativistic infinite beam, the dominant instability is a mixed mode between longitudinal two-stream and transverse filamentation modes, with a phase velocity oblique to the beam velocity. A spatiotemporal theory describing the linear growth of this oblique mixed instability is proposed, which predicts that spatiotemporal effects generally prevail for finite-length beams, leading to a significantly slower instability evolution than in the usually assumed purely temporal regime. These results are accurately supported by particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations. Furthermore, we show that the self-focusing dynamics caused by the plasma wakefields driven by finite-width beams can compete with the oblique instability. Analyzed through PIC simulations, the interplay of these two processes in realistic systems bears important implications for upcoming accelerator experiments on ultrarelativistic beam-plasma interactions.

Magnetic field amplification by relativistic streaming plasma instabilities is central to a wide variety of high-energy astrophysical environments as well as to laboratory scenarios associated with intense lasers and electron beams. We report on a new secondary nonlinear instability which arises for relativistic dilute electron beams after the saturation of the linear Weibel instability. This instability grows due to the transverse magnetic pressure associated with the beam current filaments, which cannot be quickly neutralized due to the inertia of background ions. We show that it can amplify the magnetic field strength and spatial scale by orders of magnitude, leading to large-scale plasma cavities with strong magnetic field and to very efficient conversion of the beam kinetic energy into magnetic energy. The instability growth rate, saturation level, and scale length are derived analytically and shown to be in good agreement with fully-kinetic simulations., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, submitted to Physical Review Letters

We present a detailed method to simulating sensor distortions using a photon and electron Monte Carlo method. We use three dimensional electrostatic simulations to parameterize the perturbed electric field profile for non-ideal sensor details. We follow the conversion of simulated photons, and the subsequent response of the converted electrons to the electric field pattern. These non-ideal sensor details can be implemented efficiently in a Monte Carlo approach. We demonstrate that the non-ideal sensor distortions have a variety of observable consequence including the modification of the astrometric pattern, the distortion of the electron diffusion size and shape, and the distortion of flats. We show analytic validation of the diffusion physics, reproduce two kinds of edge distortion, and show qualitative validation of field-free regions, lithography errors, and fringing. We also demonstrate that there are two related effects of doping variation having different observable consequences. We show that field distortions from accumulated electrons lead to intensity-dependent point-spread-functions and the sub-linear variance in flats. We develop a comprehensive approach to simulate the deformation of mirrors and lenses due to thermal and mechanical stresses that couples efficiently to photon-based optics simulations. This expands upon previous work where we demonstrated a comprehensive ab initio approach to simulate astronomical images using a photon Monte Carlo method. We apply elasticity theory and estimate thermal effects by adapting a three-dimensional numerical method. We also consider the effect of active optics control systems and active cooling systems in further correcting distortions in the optics. We validate the approach by showing convergence to analytic estimates, and then apply the methodology to the WIYN 3.5m telescope primary mirror. We demonstrate that changes in the soak temperature result in second order point spread function (PSF) defocusing, the gravitational sag and positioning errors result in highly structured PSF distortions, and large-scale thermal gradients result in an elliptical PSF distortion patterns. All three aspects of the environment are larger than the intrinsic optical aberrations of the design, and further exploration with a variety of telescopes should lead to detailed PSF size and shape, astrometric distortion, and field variation predictions. We present a comprehensive methodology for the simulation of astronomical images from optical survey telescopes. We use a photon Monte Carlo approach to construct images by sampling photons from models of astronomical source populations, and then simulating those photons through the system as they interact with the atmosphere, telescope, and camera. We demonstrate that all physical effects for optical light that determine the shapes, locations, and brightnesses of individual stars and galaxies can be accurately represented in this formalism. By using large scale grid computing, modern processors, and an efficient implementation that can produce 400,000 photons/second, we demonstrate that even very large optical surveys can be now be simulated. We demonstrate that we are able to: 1) construct kilometer scale phase screens necessary for wide-field telescopes, 2) reproduce atmospheric point-spread-function moments using a fast novel hybrid geometric/Fourier technique for non-diffraction limited telescopes, 3) accurately reproduce the expected spot diagrams for complex aspheric optical designs, and 4) recover system effective area predicted from analytic photometry integrals. This new code, the photon simulator (PhoSim), is publicly available. We have implemented the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST) design, and it can be extended to other telescopes. We expect that because of the comprehensive physics implemented in PhoSim, it will be used by the community to plan future observations, interpret detailed existing observations, and quantify systematics related to various astronomical measurements. Future weak lensing surveys potentially hold the highest statistical power for constraining cosmological parameters compared to other cosmological probes. The statistical power of a weak lensing survey is determined by the sky coverage, the inverse of the noise in shear measurements, and the galaxy number density. The combination of the latter two factors is often expressed in terms of $n_{\rm eff}$ -- the "effective number density of galaxies used for weak lensing measurements". In this work, we estimate $n_{\rm eff}$ for the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST) project, the most powerful ground-based lensing survey planned for the next two decades. We investigate how the following factors affect the resulting $n_{\rm eff}$ of the survey with detailed simulations: (1) survey time, (2) shear measurement algorithm, (3) algorithm for combining multiple exposures, (4) inclusion of data from multiple filter bands, (5) redshift distribution of the galaxies, and (6) masking and blending. For the first time, we quantify in a general weak lensing analysis pipeline the sensitivity of $n_{\rm eff}$ to the above factors. We find that with current weak lensing algorithms, expected distributions of observing parameters, and all lensing data ($r$- and $i$-band, covering 18,000 degree$^{2}$ of sky) for LSST, $n_{\rm eff} \approx37$ arcmin$^{-2}$ before considering blending and masking, $n_{\rm eff} \approx31$ arcmin$^{-2}$ when rejecting seriously blended galaxies and $n_{\rm eff} \approx26$ arcmin$^{-2}$ when considering an additional 15% loss of galaxies due to masking. With future improvements in weak lensing algorithms, these values could be expected to increase by up to 20%. We measure the intracluster medium temperature distributions for 62 galaxy clusters in the HIFLUGCS, an X-ray flux-limited sample, with available X-ray data from XMM-Newton. We search for correlations between the width of the temperature distributions and other cluster properties, including median cluster temperature, luminosity, size, presence of a cool core, AGN activity, and dynamical state. We use a Markov Chain Monte Carlo analysis which models the ICM as a collection of X-ray emitting smoothed particles of plasma. Each smoothed particle is given its own set of parameters, including temperature, spatial position, redshift, size, and emission measure. This allows us to measure the width of the temperature distribution, median temperature, and total emission measure of each cluster. We find that none of the clusters have a temperature width, \sigma_kT, consistent with isothermality. Counterintuitively, we also find that the temperature distribution widths of disturbed, non-cool-core, and AGN-free clusters tend to be wider than in other clusters. A linear fit to \sigma_kT - kT_med finds \sigma_kT ~ 0.20kT_med + 1.08, with an estimated intrinsic scatter of ~ 0.55 keV, demonstrating a large range in ICM thermal histories., Comment: 22 pages, 16 figures, accepted to ApJ

A main science goal for the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST) is to measure the cosmic shear signal from weak lensing to extreme accuracy. One difficulty, however, is that with the short exposure time ($\simeq$15 seconds) proposed, the spatial variation of the Point Spread Function (PSF) shapes may be dominated by the atmosphere, in addition to optics errors. While optics errors mainly cause the PSF to vary on angular scales similar or larger than a single CCD sensor, the atmosphere generates stochastic structures on a wide range of angular scales. It thus becomes a challenge to infer the multi-scale, complex atmospheric PSF patterns by interpolating the sparsely sampled stars in the field. In this paper we present a new method, PSFent, for interpolating the PSF shape parameters, based on reconstructing underlying shape parameter maps with a multi-scale maximum entropy algorithm. We demonstrate, using images from the LSST Photon Simulator, the performance of our approach relative to a 5th-order polynomial fit (representing the current standard) and a simple boxcar smoothing technique. Quantitatively, PSFent predicts more accurate PSF models in all scenarios and the residual PSF errors are spatially less correlated. This improvement in PSF interpolation leads to a factor of 3.5 lower systematic errors in the shear power spectrum on scales smaller than $\sim13'$, compared to polynomial fitting. We estimate that with PSFent and for stellar densities greater than $\simeq1/{\rm arcmin}^{2}$, the spurious shear correlation from PSF interpolation, after combining a complete 10-year dataset from LSST, is lower than the corresponding statistical uncertainties on the cosmic shear power spectrum, even under a conservative scenario., Comment: 18 pages,12 figures, accepted by MNRAS

The complete 10-year survey from the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST) will image $\sim$ 20,000 square degrees of sky in six filter bands every few nights, bringing the final survey depth to $r\sim27.5$, with over 4 billion well measured galaxies. To take full advantage of this unprecedented statistical power, the systematic errors associated with weak lensing measurements need to be controlled to a level similar to the statistical errors. This work is the first attempt to quantitatively estimate the absolute level and statistical properties of the systematic errors on weak lensing shear measurements due to the most important physical effects in the LSST system via high fidelity ray-tracing simulations. We identify and isolate the different sources of algorithm-independent, \textit{additive} systematic errors on shear measurements for LSST and predict their impact on the final cosmic shear measurements using conventional weak lensing analysis techniques. We find that the main source of the errors comes from an inability to adequately characterise the atmospheric point spread function (PSF) due to its high frequency spatial variation on angular scales smaller than $\sim10'$ in the single short exposures, which propagates into a spurious shear correlation function at the $10^{-4}$--$10^{-3}$ level on these scales. With the large multi-epoch dataset that will be acquired by LSST, the stochastic errors average out, bringing the final spurious shear correlation function to a level very close to the statistical errors. We present a large X-ray selected serendipitous cluster survey based on a novel joint analysis of archival Chandra and XMM-Newton data. The survey provides enough depth to reach clusters of flux of $\approx 10^{-14} {ergs} {cm}^{-2} {s}^{-1}$ near $z$ $\approx$ 1 and simultaneously a large enough sample to find evidence for the strong evolution of clusters expected from structure formation theory. We detected a total of 723 clusters of which 462 are newly discovered clusters with greater than 6$\sigma$ significance. In addition, we also detect and measure 261 previously-known clusters and groups that can be used to calibrate the survey. The survey exploits a technique which combines the exquisite Chandra imaging quality with the high throughput of the XMM-Newton telescopes using overlapping survey regions. A large fraction of the contamination from AGN point sources is mitigated by using this technique. This results in a higher sensitivity for finding clusters of galaxies with relatively few photons and a large part of our survey has a flux sensitivity between $10^{-14}$ and $10^{-15} {ergs} {cm}^{-2} {s}^{-1}$. The survey covers 41.2 square degrees of overlapping Chandra and XMM-Newton fields and 122.2 square degrees of non-overlapping Chandra data. We measure the log N-log S distribution and fit it with a redshift-dependent model characterized by a luminosity distribution proportional to $e^{-\frac{z}{z_0}}$. We find that $z_0$ to be in the range 0.7 to 1.3, indicative of rapid cluster evolution, as expected for cosmic structure formation using parameters appropriate to the concordance cosmological model., Comment: 16 pages, 26 figures, Accepted for publication in ApJ

We examine deep XMM-Newton Reflection Grating Spectrometer (RGS) observations of the X-ray luminous galaxy cluster A1835. For the first time in a galaxy cluster we place direct limits on turbulent broadening of the emission lines. This is possible because the coolest X-ray emitting gas in the cluster, which is responsible for the lines, occupies a small region within the core. The most conservative determination of the 90 per cent upper limit on line-of-sight, non-thermal, velocity broadening is 274 km/s, measured from the emission lines originating within 30 kpc radius. The ratio of turbulent to thermal energy density in the core is therefore less than 13 per cent. There are no emission lines in the spectrum showing evidence for gas below ~3.5 keV. We examine the quantity of gas as a function of temperature and place a limit of 140 Msun/yr (90 per cent) for gas cooling radiatively below 3.85 keV., Comment: 5 pages, accepted by MNRAS, includes minor change suggested by referee

We examine deep XMM-Newton Reflection Grating Spectrometer (RGS) spectra from the cores of three X-ray bright cool core galaxy clusters, Abell 262, Abell 3581 and HCG 62. Each of the RGS spectra show Fe XVII emission lines indicating the presence of gas around 0.5 keV. There is no evidence for O VII emission which would imply gas at still cooler temperatures. The range in detected gas temperature in these objects is a factor of 3.7, 5.6 and 2 for Abell 262, Abell 3581 and HCG 62, respectively. The coolest detected gas only has a volume filling fraction of 6 and 3 per cent for Abell 262 and Abell 3581, but is likely to be volume filling in HCG 62. Chandra spatially resolved spectroscopy confirms the low volume filling fractions of the cool gas in Abell 262 and Abell 3581, indicating this cool gas exists as cold blobs. Any volume heating mechanism aiming to prevent cooling would overheat the surroundings of the cool gas by a factor of 4. If the gas is radiatively cooling below 0.5 keV, it is cooling at a rate at least an order of magnitude below that at higher temperatures in Abell 262 and Abell 3581 and two-orders of magnitude lower in HCG 62. The gas may be cooling non-radiatively through mixing in these cool blobs, where the energy released by cooling is emitted in the infrared. We find very good agreement between smooth particle inference modelling of the cluster and conventional spectral fitting. Comparing the temperature distribution from this analysis with that expected in a cooling flow, there appears to be a even larger break below 0.5 keV as compared with previous empirical descriptions of the deviations of cooling flow models., Comment: 19 pages, 22 figures, accepted by MNRAS

We report the application of a new Monte Carlo method, Smoothed Particle Inference (SPI, described in a pair of companion papers), towards analysis and interpretation of X-ray observations of clusters of galaxies with the XMM-Newton satellite. Our sample consists of publicly available, well-exposed observations of clusters at redshifts z > 0.069, totaling 101 objects. We determine the luminosity and temperature structure of the X-ray emitting gas, with the goal to quantify the scatter and the evolution of the L_X - T relation, as well as to investigate the dependence on cluster substructure with redshift. We confirm that L_X \propto T^3 and we find a weak redshift dependence (\propto (1+z)^(\beta_LT), \beta_LT=0.50 +- 0.34), in contrast to some Chandra results. The level of dynamical activity is established using the "power ratios" method, and we find signs of evolution in the P_3/P_0 power ratio. A new method, the "temperature two-point correlation function," is proposed. This method is used to determine the "power spectrum" of temperature fluctuations in the X-ray emitting gas as a function of spatial scale. We show how this method can be fruitfully used to identify cooling core clusters as well as those with disturbed structures, presumably due to on-going or recent merger activity., Comment: 30 pages, 32 figures. We propose a new Monte Carlo method to study extended X-ray sources with the European Photon Imaging Camera (EPIC) aboard {\sl XMM-Newton}. The smoothed particle inference (SPI) technique, described in a companion paper, is applied here to the EPIC data for the clusters of galaxies Abell 1689, Centaurus, and RX J0658-55 (the ``bullet cluster''). We aim to show the advantages of this method of simultaneous spectral and spatial modeling over traditional X-ray spectral analysis. In Abell 1689 we confirm our earlier findings about structure in the temperature distribution and produce a high-resolution temperature map. We also find a hint of velocity structure within the gas, consistent with previous findings. In the bullet cluster, RX J0658-55, we produce the highest resolution temperature map ever to be published of this cluster, allowing us to trace what looks like the trail of the motion of the bullet in the cluster. We even detect a south-to-north temperature gradient within the bullet itself. In the Centaurus cluster we detect, by dividing up the luminosity of the cluster in bands of gas temperatures, a striking feature to the north-east of the cluster core. We hypothesize that this feature is caused by a subcluster left over from a substantial merger that slightly displaced the core. We conclude that our method is very powerful in determining the spatial distributions of plasma temperatures and very useful for systematic studies in cluster structure., Comment: 18 pages, 17 figures

We present a combined analysis of the X-ray emission of the Capella corona obtained with \textit{XMM-Newton} RGS, \textit{Chandra} HETGS, and LETGS. An improved atomic line database and a new differential emission measure (DEM) deconvolution method are developed for this purpose. Our new atomic database is based on the Astrophysical Plasma Emission Database and incorporates improved calculations of ionization equilibrium and line emissivities for L-shell ions of abundant elements using the Flexible Atomic Code. The new DEM deconvolution method uses a Markov Chain Monte-Carlo (MCMC) technique which differs from existing MCMC or $\chi^2$-fitting based methods. We analyze the advantages and disadvantages of each individual instrument in determining the DEM and elemental abundances. We conclude that results from either RGS or HETGS data alone are not robust enough due to their failure to constrain DEM in some temperature region or the lack of significant continuum emission in the wavelength band of the spectrometers, and that the combination of HETGS and RGS gives more stringent constraints on the DEM and abundance determinations. Using the LETGS data, we show that the recently discovered inconsistencies between the EUV and X-ray lines of Fe XVIII and XIX also exist in more highly charged iron ions, up to Fe XXIII, and that enhanced interstellar absorption due to partially ionized plasma along the Capella line of sight may explain some, but not all, of these discrepancies., Comment: Accepted in ApJ

Using a new long X-ray observation of the cluster of galaxies Sersic 159-03 with XMM-Newton, we derive radial temperature and abundance profiles using single- and multi-temperature models. The fits to the EPIC and RGS spectra prefer multi-temperature models especially in the core. The radial profiles of oxygen and iron measured with EPIC/RGS and the line profiles in RGS suggest that there is a dip in the O/Fe ratio in the centre of the cluster compared to its immediate surroundings. A possible explanation for the large scale metallicity distribution is that SNIa and SNII products are released in the ICM through ram-pressure stripping of in-falling galaxies. This causes a peaked metallicity distribution. In addition, SNIa in the central cD galaxy enrich mainly the centre of the cluster with iron. This excess of SNIa products is consistent with the low O/Fe ratio we detect in the centre of the cluster. We fit the abundances we obtain with yields from SNIa, SNII and Population-III stars to derive the clusters chemical evolution. We find that the measured abundance pattern does not require a Population-III star contribution. The relative contribution of the number of SNIa with respect to the total number of SNe which enrich the ICM is about 25-50%. Furthermore, we discuss the possible presence of a non-thermal component in the EPIC spectra. We review the X-ray spectra of the cores of clusters of galaxies. Recent high resolution X-ray spectroscopic observations have demonstrated a severe deficit of emission at the lowest X-ray temperatures as compared to that expected from simple radiative cooling models. The same observations have provided compelling evidence that the gas in the cores is cooling below half the maximum temperature. We review these results, discuss physical models of cooling clusters, and describe the X-ray instrumentation and analysis techniques used to make these observations. We present here the results of a deep (130 ks) XMM-Newton observation of the cluster of galaxies 2A 0335+096. The deep exposure allows us to study in detail its temperature structure and its elemental abundances. We fit three different thermal models and find that the multi-temperature wdem model fits our data best. We find that the abundance structure of the cluster is consistent with a scenario where the relative number of Type Ia supernovae contributing to the enrichment of the intra-cluster medium is ~25%, while the relative number of core collapse supernovae is ~75%. Comparison of the observed abundances to the supernova yields does not allow us to put any constrains on the contribution of Pop III stars to the enrichment of the ICM. Radial abundance profiles show a strong central peak of both Type Ia and core collapse supernova products. Both the temperature and iron abundance maps show an asymmetry in the direction of the elongated morphology of the surface brightness. In particular the temperature map shows a sharp change over a brightness edge on the southern side of the core, which was identified as a cold front in the Chandra data. This suggests that the cluster is in the process of a merger with a subcluster. Moreover, we find that the blobs or filaments discovered in the core of the cluster by Chandra are, contrary to the previous results, colder than the ambient gas and they appear to be in pressure equilibrium with their environment., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A, 19 pages

We propose an ambitious new method that models the intracluster medium in clusters of galaxies as a set of X-ray emitting smoothed particles of plasma. Each smoothed particle is described by a handful of parameters including temperature, location, size, and elemental abundances. Hundreds to thousands of these particles are used to construct a model cluster of galaxies, with the appropriate complexity estimated from the data quality. This model is then compared iteratively with X-ray data in the form of adaptively binned photon lists via a two-sample likelihood statistic and iterated via Markov Chain Monte Carlo. The complex cluster model is propagated through the X-ray instrument response using direct sampling Monte Carlo methods. Using this approach the method can reproduce many of the features observed in the X-ray emission in a less assumption-dependent way that traditional analyses, and it allows for a more detailed characterization of the density, temperature, and metal abundance structure of clusters. Multi-instrument X-ray analyses and simultaneous X-ray, Sunyaev-Zeldovich (SZ), and lensing analyses are a straight-forward extension of this methodology. We present results from a new 120 ks XMM-Newton observation of the cluster of galaxies Sersic 159-03. In this paper we focus on the high-resolution X-ray spectra obtained with the Reflection Grating Spectrometer (RGS). The spectra allow us to constrain the temperature structure in the core of the cluster and determine the emission measure distribution as a function of temperature. We propose a novel multivariate Monte Carlo method as an efficient and flexible approach to analyzing extended X-ray sources with the Reflection Grating Spectrometer (RGS) on XMM Newton. A multi-dimensional interpolation method is used to efficiently calculate the response function for the RGS in conjunction with an arbitrary spatially-varying spectral model. Several methods of event comparison that effectively compare the multivariate RGS data are discussed. The use of a multi-dimensional instrument Monte Carlo also creates many opportunities for the use of complex astrophysical Monte Carlo calculations in diffuse X-ray spectroscopy. We report the results from a spatially resolved spectroscopy study with XMM-Newton on the relaxed cluster of galaxies Abell 478. From the EPIC data we extract a temperature profile and radial abundance profiles for Ne, Mg, Si, S, Ca, Fe and Ni. The abundance profiles follow the same trends as observed in other clusters. The spectra of the core of the cluster can be best fitted with a multi-temperature model. We argue that this multi-temperature behavior is mostly due to projection effects, because of the strong temperature gradient in the core. Contributions from other effects, for example, intrinsic temperature stratification cannot be fully excluded. For the first time we measure an underabundance of oxygen in the Galactic absorption component toward a cluster. The measured oxygen abundance in this absorber is about 0.5 times the solar oxygen abundance as determined by Anders & Grevesse (1989)., Comment: 9 pages. XMM-Newton observations of 19 galaxy clusters are used to measure the elemental abundances and their spatial distributions in the intracluster medium. The sample mainly consists of X-ray bright and relaxed clusters with a cD galaxy. Along with detailed Si, S and Fe radial abundance distributions within 300-700 kpc in radius, the O abundances are accurately derived in the central region of the clusters. The Fe abundance maxima towards the cluster center, possibly due to the metals from the cD galaxy,are spatially resolved. The Si and S abundances also exhibit central increases in general, resulting in uniform Fe-Si-S ratios within the cluster. In contrast, the O abundances are in general uniform over the cluster. The mean O to Fe ratio within the cluster core is sub-solar, while that of the cluster scale is larger than the solar ratio. These measurements indicate that most of the Fe-Si-S and O in the intracluster medium have different origins, presumably in supernovae Ia and II, respectively. We present spatially resolved X-ray spectra taken with the EPIC cameras of XMM-Newton of a sample of 17 cooling clusters and three non-cooling clusters for comparison. The deprojected spectra are analyzed with a multi-temperature model, independent of any a priori assumptions about the physics behind the cooling and heating mechanisms. All cooling clusters show a central decrement of the average temperature, most of them of a factor of ~2. At each radius within the cooling region the gas is non-isothermal. The differential emission measure distribution peaks near the maximum (ambient) temperature, and steeply declines towards lower temperatures, proportional to T^3, or alternatively a cut-off at about a quarter to half of the maximum temperature. In general, we find a poor correlation between radio flux of the central galaxy and the temperature decrement of the cooling flow. This is interpreted as evidence that except for a few cases heating by a central AGN is not the most common cause of weak cooling flows. We investigate the role of heat conduction by electrons and find that the theoretically predicted conductivity rates are not high enough to balance radiation losses. The differential emission measure distribution has remarkable similarities with the predictions from coronal magnetic loop models. Also the physical processes involved (radiative cooling, thermal conduction along the loops, gravity) are similar for clusters loops and coronal loops. If coronal loop models apply to clusters, we find that a few hundred loops per scale height should be present. We present Chandra HETG spectra of seven cataclysmic variables. We find that they divide unambiguously into two distinct types. Spectra of the first type are remarkably well fit by a simple cooling flow model, which assumes only steady-state isobaric radiative cooling. The maximum temperature and the normalization, which provides a highly precise measurement of the accretion rate, are the only free parameters of this model. Spectra of the second type are grossly inconsistent with a cooling flow model. They instead exhibit a hard continuum, and show strong H-like and He-like ion emission but little Fe L-shell emission, which is consistent with expectations for line emission from a photoionized plasma. Using a simple photoionization model, we argue that the observed line emission for these sources can be driven entirely by the hard continuum. In many clusters of galaxies, the cooling time at the core of the intracluster medium is much less than the age of the system, suggesting that the the gas should continually lose energy by radiation. Simple thermodynamic arguments then require that the expected "cooling flow" should exhibit a specific spectroscopic signature, characterized by a differential emission measure distribution that is inversely proportional to the cooling function of the plasma. That prediction can be quantitatively tested for the first time by the Reflection Grating Spectrometer (RGS) experiment on XMM-Newton, which provides high resolution X-ray spectra, even for moderately extended sources like clusters. We present RGS data on 14 separate cooling flow clusters, sampling a very wide range in mass deposition rate. Surprisingly, in all cases we find a systematic deficit of low temperature emission relative to the predictions of the cooling flow models. However, we do see evidence for cooling flow gas at temperatures just below the cluster background temperature, $T_0$, roughly down to $T_0/2$. These results are difficult to reconcile with most of the possible explanations for the cooling flow problem that have been proposed to date. We also present RGS data on the massive elliptical galaxy NGC 4636. In this case, we detect evidence for resonance emission line scattering of high oscillator strength Fe L-shell emission lines within the gaseous halo of the galaxy. The detection of that effect leads to very tight constraints on physical conditions within the halo. We discuss multivariate Monte Carlo methods appropriate for X-ray dispersive spectrometers. Dispersive spectrometers have many advantages for high resolution spectroscopy in the X-ray band. Analysis of data from these instruments is complicated by the fact that the instrument response functions are multi-dimensional and relatively few X-ray photons are detected from astrophysical sources. Monte Carlo methods are the natural solution to these challenges, but techniques for their use are not well developed. We describe a number of methods to produce a highly efficient and flexible multivariate Monte Carlo. These techniques include multi-dimensional response interpolation and multi-dimensional event comparison. We discuss how these methods have been extensively used in the XMM-Newton Reflection Grating Spectrometer in-flight calibration program. We present high resolution X-ray spectra of 14 putative cooling-flow clusters of galaxies obtained with the Reflection Grating Spectrometer on XMM-Newton. The clusters in the sample span a large range of temperatures and mass deposition rates. Various of these spectra exhibit line emission from O VIII, Ne X, Mg XII & XI, Al XIII & XII, Si XIV & XIII, N VII, and C VI as well as all Fe L ions. The spectra exhibit strong emission from cool plasma at just below the ambient temperature, $T_0$, down to $T_0/2$, but also exhibit a severe deficit of emission, relative to the predictions of the isobaric cooling-flow model at lower temperatures ($<$ $T_0/3$). In addition, the best-resolved spectra show emission throughout the entire X-ray temperature range, but increasingly less emission at lower temperatures than the cooling-flow model would predict. These results are difficult to reconcile with simple prescriptions for distorting the emission measure distribution, e.g. by including additional heating or rapid cooling terms. We enumerate some theoretical difficulties in understanding the soft X-ray spectra of cooling-flows independent of the classic problem of the failure to detect the cooling-flow sink. Empirically, the differential luminosity distribution is consistent with being proportional to the temperature to the power of $\approx$ 1 to 2, instead of being independent of the temperature, as expected in the standard multi-phase model. Based on XMM-Newton observations of a sample of galaxy clusters, we have measured the elemental abundances (mainly O, Si, S, and Fe) and their spatial distributions in the intracluster medium (ICM). In the outer region of the ICM, observations of the O:Si:S:Fe ratio are consistent with the solar value, suggesting that the metals in the ICM were produced by a mix of supernovae (SNe) Ia and II. On the other hand, around the cD galaxy, the O/Fe ratios are about half of the solar value because of a central excess of the Fe abundance. We present high-resolution X-ray spectroscopic observations of M87 with the Reflection Grating Spectrometers on XMM-Newton. We detect strong K-shell line emission from N, O, Ne, Mg, some emission from He-like Si, a fully resolved set of Fe L-shell emission spectra, and some emission from C. The angular intensity distributions of the strong emission lines are detectably resolved on scales (15-160) arcsec. The gas in the inner arcmin of M87 has a multi-phase structure, as indicated by the similarity of the emission line profiles of Fe L shell ions with widely separated ionization potentials. The global Fe L spectrum is approximately consistent with an isothermal plasma at kT_e ~ 1.8 keV, in addition to a component with a temperature distribution appropriate to an isobaric cooling flow, but with a minimum temperature cutoff of kT_min ~ 600 eV. The behaviour of this cooling-flow component is qualitatively similar to what is seen in other cooling flow clusters. Finally, we do not find any strong evidence for a spatial variation in abundances due to resonance scattering redistribution in the inner arcminute of the core., Comment: accepted by Astronomy and Astrophysics, 8 pages, 4 figures

We present high resolution X-ray spectra of 14 cooling-flow X-ray clusters and groups obtained with the Reflection Grating Spectrometers (RGS) on XMM-Newton. The spectra exhibit line emission from a number of Fe L charge states as well as O VIII, Mg XII, Ne X, Si XIV & XIII, N VII, and C VI. All spectra show a deficit of soft X-ray lines predicted from the isobaric multi-phase spectral model as compared with morphological mass deposition rates from spatially-resolved spectroscopy with the European Photon Imaging Cameras (EPIC). We present some weak detections of plasma several times cooler than the ambient cluster temperatures. The results further suggest that either morphological mass deposition rates systematically overestimate the actual cooling rate or the emission measure of cooling-flows has a much steeper distribution than that predicted by a simple isobaric multi-phase model. We present the first high spectral resolution X-ray observation of the giant elliptical galaxy NGC 4636, obtained with the Reflection Grating Spectrometer on-board the XMM-Newton Observatory. The resulting spectrum contains a wealth of emission lines from various charge states of oxygen, neon, magnesium, and iron. Examination of the cross-dispersion profiles of several of these lines provides clear, unambiguous evidence of resonance scattering by the highest oscillator strength lines, as well as a weak temperature gradient in the inner regions of the interstellar medium. We invoke a sophisticated new Monte Carlo technique which allows us to properly account for these effects in performing quantitative fits to the spectrum. Our spectral fits are not subject to many of the systematics that have plagued earlier investigations. The derived metal abundances are higher than have been inferred from prior, lower spectral resolution observations of this source (Awaki et al. 1994), but are still incompatible with conventional chemical enrichment models of elliptical galaxies. In addition, our data are incompatible with standard cooling flow models for this system - our derived upper limit to the mass deposition rate is below the predicted value by a factor of 3--5., Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures; submitted to ApJ

It is common to suggest the uncertainties in the atomic data for explaining difficulties that arise in interpreting astrophysical x-ray spectra. The atomic data for the Fe L-shell ions have, over the years, been considered particularly suspect. In this paper, we confront Fe-L spectra calculated using the HULLAC atomic code assuming coronal conditions with recent observations of the stellar coronae of Capella and HR 1099, obtained with the high-resolution grating spectrometers on board Chandra and XMM-Newton. We present the results of an analysis of broad band UV observations of the central regions of Abell 1795 observed with the optical monitor on XMM-Newton. As have been found with other UV observations of the central regions of clusters of galaxies, we find evidence for star formation. However, we also find evidence for absorption in the cD galaxy on a more extended scale than has been seen with optical imaging. We also report the first UV observation of part of the filamentary structure seen in H$\alpha$, X-rays and very deep U band imaging. The part of the filament we see is very blue with UV colours consistent with a very early (O/B) stellar population. This is the first direct evidence of a dominant population of early type stars at the centre of Abell 1795 and implies very recent star formation at the centre of this cluster, Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures accepted by A&A Letters

The RS CVn binary system HR 1099 was extensively observed by the XMM-Newton observatory in February 2000 as its first-light target. A total of 570 ks of exposure time was accumulated with the Reflection Grating Spectrometers (RGS). The integrated X-ray spectrum between 5-35 Angstrom is of unprecedented quality and shows numerous features attributed to transitions of the elements C, N, O, Ne, Mg, Si, S, Fe, and Ni. We perform an in-depth study of the elemental composition of the average corona of this system, and find that the elemental abundances strongly depend on the first ionisation potential (FIP) of the elements. But different from the solar coronal case, we find an inverse FIP effect, i.e., the abundances (relative to oxygen) increase with increasing FIP. We present detailed spatially-resolved spectroscopy results of the observation of Abell 1835 using the European Photon Imaging Cameras (EPIC) and the Reflection Grating Spectrometers (RGS) on the XMM-Newton observatory. Abell 1835 is a luminous ($10^{46}$ ergs ${s}^{-1}$), medium redshift ($z=0.2523$), X-ray emitting cluster of galaxies. The observations support the interpretation that large amounts of cool gas are present in a multi-phase medium surrounded by a hot ($kT_{e}$=8.2 keV) outer envelope. We detect O VIII Ly$\alpha$ and two Fe XXIV complexes in the RGS spectrum. The emission measure of the cool gas below $kT_{e}$=2.7 keV is much lower than expected from standard cooling-flow models, suggesting either a more complicated cooling process than simple isobaric radiative cooling or differential cold absorption of the cooler gas., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, Accepted by A&A letters, XMM issue

Strong evidence for cooling flows has been found in low resolution X-ray imaging and spectra of many clusters of galaxies. However high resolution X-ray spectra of several clusters from the Reflection Grating Spectrometer (RGS) on XMM-Newton now show a soft X-ray spectrum inconsistent with a simple cooling flow. The main problem is a lack of the emission lines expected from gas cooling below 1--2 keV. Lines from gas at about 2--3 keV are observed, even in a high temperature cluster such as A 1835, indicating that gas is cooling down to about 2--3 keV, but is not found at lower temperatures. Here we discuss several solutions to the problem; heating, mixing, differential absorption and inhomogeneous metallicity. Continuous or sporadic heating creates further problems, including the targetting of the heat at the cooler gas and also the high total energy required. So far there is no clear observational evidence for widespread heating, or shocks, in cluster cores, except in radio lobes which occupy only part of the volume. The implied ages of cooling flows are short, at about 1 Gyr. Mixing. or absorption, of the cooling gas are other possibilities. Alternatively, if the metals in the intracluster medium are not uniformly spread but are clumped, then little line emission is expected from the gas cooling below 1 keV. The low metallicity part cools without line emission whereas the strengths of the soft X-ray lines from the metal-rich gas depend on the mass fraction of that gas and not on the abundance, since soft X-ray line emission dominates the cooling function below 2 keV., Comment: 5 pages, with 2 figures, submitted to MNRAS

The cluster of galaxies Sersic 159-03 was observed with the XMM-Newton X-ray observatory as part of the Guaranteed Time program. X-ray spectra taken with the EPIC and RGS instruments show no evidence for the strong cooling flow derived from previous X-ray observations. There is a significant lack of cool gas below 1.5 keV as compared to standard isobaric cooling flow models. While the oxygen is distributed more or less uniformly over the cluster, iron shows a strong concentration in the center of the cluster, slightly offset from the brightness center but within the central cD galaxy. This points to enhanced type Ia supernova activity in the center of the cluster. There is also an elongated iron-rich structure extending to the east of the cluster, showing the inhomogeneity of the iron distribution. Finally, the temperature drops rapidly beyond 4 arcmin from the cluster center., Comment: 5 pages, 6 figures. The initial results from XMM-Newton observations of the rich cluster of galaxies Abell 1795 are presented. The spatially-resolved X-ray spectra taken by the European Photon Imaging Cameras (EPIC) show a temperature drop at a radius of $\sim 200$ kpc from the cluster center, indicating that the ICM is cooling. Both the EPIC and the Reflection Grating Spectrometers (RGS) spectra extracted from the cluster center can be described by an isothermal model with a temperature of $\sim 4$ keV. The volume emission measure of any cool component ($<1$ keV) is less than a few % of the hot component at the cluster center. A strong OVIII Lyman-alpha line was detected with the RGS from the cluster core. The O abundance and its ratio to Fe at the cluster center is 0.2--0.5 and 0.5--1.5 times the solar value, respectively., Comment: Accepted: A&A Letters, 2001, 6 pages
