A systematically produced overview regarding psychological determinants of hearing protection behaviors (e.g. using earplugs, restricting volume of music players) is paramount for the development of evidence-based interventions to prevent avoidable noise induced hearing loss. At present, no such overview exists. The present study, therefore, aims to offer a systematic review of the current literature concerning psychological determinants of hearing protection behaviors, and identify the determinants that are most strongly associated with hearing protection behaviors.

The aim of this project is to establish a consensus regarding for which populations and behaviors (if any) fear appeals seem a wise choice as behavior change method. It originated with a debate in Health Psychology Review in early 2018.

Determinants of sleeping behaviour: self-efficacy, goal setting and intention

The qualitative study aims to increase the understanding of adolescents' and young adults' behaviours, attitudes and ideas towards exposure to loud sounds and help identify potential (sub)determinants of hearing protective behaviours and hearing risk behaviours in this population. Semi-structured focus groups will be conducted with students from secondary schools and secondary vocational education. The study is part of the EarAct project which aims to contribute to the prevention of hearing damage in young people by extending the existing Earcheck (“Oorcheck”), an online hearing test that detects hearing damage in people of 12-25 years, from screening instrument to behaviour change intervention. Preceding the qualitative study, a pilot study consisting of two focus group sessions is conducted with students from a secondary school to test the different component of the focus group conversations in practice (among others the questions, topic guide, and integration of Mentimeter in the conversation), and to assess whether other aspects emerge during the focus group sessions that need adaptation. After informal evaluation, modifications are possibly made to the set up of the focus group conversations before subsequent focus groups sessions are conducted as part of the EarAct project.

The Number Needed for Change (NNC) is the Number Needed to Treat (NNT) in situations where there is no treatment, for example when applied to behavior change interventions. The NNT/NNC is a useful 'halfway' measure towards cost-effectiveness, but even its raw form has interpretative benefits over standardized effect size estimates. This OSF repo collects a series of resources related to the NNT/NNC.

This registration freezes the protocol and all produced materials for the above project. More information is available in the file attached to this preregistration. Note that this preregistration was frozen upon submission of the request for ethical approval, and as such, we expect the procedures to change slightly and will then take a second snapshot of the project.

The overarching aim of the project that this study is a part of is to develop an intervention promoting COVID-19 vaccination among university students through informed decision making. Moreover, by promoting COVID-19 vaccination and exploring the beliefs of the university students with regard to a vaccination policy that could be enforced in a university setting, we aimed to create a safe environment for students. The development of an intervention aiming at behavior change requires several steps to accomplish. In our study, first, we aimed to select the relevant determinants (and beliefs) of university students’ intention to get the COVID-19 vaccine to specify the change objectives of our intervention. Please note that by COVID19 vaccine, we mean the COVID-19 vaccines approved for use in Europe. This part of the study has been reported separately and is not within the scope of this pre-registration. Due to the broad focus, we decided to parse the studies into two while analyzing the data and communicating the findings. The first paper was limited to the quantitative parts of the survey. This pre-registration and the following paper concern the qualitative parts of the survey, which require thorough coding and analysis. Second, in order to facilitate the informed decision making around the COVID-19 vaccination, we aim to gather information on a) students’ information needs around COVID-19 vaccination, b) the type of communication channels through which they would like to receive the information, and c) what students consider trusted sources of information. This part is aimed at generating knowledge. (Part A) Imposing the COVID-19 vaccines as a prerequisite to enter certain facilities is a debate ongoing worldwide. Our third and final aim is to explore if the COVID-19 vaccine requirement was implemented within a university setting, what would be the reactions of the students to this policy. We asked students if they agree or disagree (on a 7-point Likert scale) with the statement “Only people who are already vaccinated should be allowed to come on-site (UM buildings) in case that current COVID-19 prevention guidelines still apply.” and requested to elaborate their response in writing. This part is aimed at both generating knowledge and developing policy. (Part B) Please note that this pre-registration concerns parts A and B of the study, the qualitative parts.

In this project we aim to learn what the concept of financial literacy, constituent behaviors and financial resilience is, i.e. the way they are defined and measured in the literature. We use a multidisciplinary approach with both studies from Finance and Psychology.

Health Psychologists using questionnaires rely heavily on Cronbach’s alpha as indicator of scale reliability and internal consistency. Cronbach’s alpha is often viewed as some kind of quality label: high values certify scale quality, low values prompt removal of one or several items. Unfortunately, this approach suffers two fundamental problems. First, Cronbach’s alpha is both unrelated to a scale's internal consistency and a fatally flawed estimate of its reliability. Second, the approach itself assumes that scale items are repeated measurements, an assumption that is often violated and rarely desirable. The problems with Cronbach’s alpha are easily solved by computing readily available alternatives, such as the Greatest Lower Bound or Omega. Solving the second problem, however, is less straightforward. This requires forgoing the appealing comfort of a quantitative, seemingly objective indicator of scale quality altogether, instead acknowledging the dynamics of reliability and validity and the distinction between scales and indices. In this contribution, I will explore these issues, and provide recommendations for scale inspection that takes these dynamics and this distinction into account.
